Does anyone know a good way to quit smoking? -

Stopping smoking requires effort, determination, and commitment, but the more you learn about your options and prepare for quitting, the easier the process will be. While there is no one best way to quit smoking, you will be most successful if you are aware of the challenges ahead and make a plan to keep yourself on track.

Making a Stop-Smoking Plan
While some smokers successfully quit by going cold turkey, most people need a more elaborate treatment plan.
A smoking cessation program is a plan of action that weans you off smoking both physically and psychologically. Having a solid plan in place can greatly increase your chances for success. A good program addresses both the short-term challenge of quitting smoking and the long-term challenge of preventing relapse.

SmokeFree.gov outlines five basic steps that will help you get ready to quit:
S = Set a quit date.
T = Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you plan to quit.
A = Anticipate and plan for the challenges you-ll face while quitting.
R = Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work.
T = Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit.

Other important aspects of a stop-smoking plan include:

Identifying your smoking triggers – Print out this craving journal and keep a log of where you are when you smoke and who you’re with. Identify situations or emotions that trigger your cravings for a cigarette.
Preparing for cravings – Once you’ve identified your triggers, you can make a plan for avoiding them. You can also draw up a list of coping techniques to use when you’re tempted to smoke. For some helpful strategies, see Quitting Smoking – Help for Cravings and Tough Situations.
Getting your loved ones involved. Quitting is tough, and having the right people around you can make all the difference. Let your friends and family members know that you are planning to quit smoking and would appreciate their support and encouragement.

lock yourself in the basement or closet or something for about 4 days!!!
I used the patches by Nicorette. I was ready to quit though because I decided that it was better to be able to breathe without using oxygen and not being afraid to lay down flat in bed and worry about not breathing. You just have to be ready to quit on your own though, and you can-t have anyone pressure you into it. Like I said, the Nicorette patches worked for me because they give you the taste of nicotine and that helps a lot. Just follow their plan.
Cold turkey and plenty of sunflower seeds.
First go through all the pro/con demons in your head and decide if you really do want to quit. Its your decision, no one elses. If you decide to quit there-s help our here. I had to go to many groups to read all info, my choice you may not need it, and know they were there before I quit. I used something my sister recommended -Smoke Away- available in many stores - e-bay. Between the time I ordered it and got it I read all the group sites to build up my determination. I found some of the program didn-t work for me but the first weeks herbal pills did help very much. I smoked for 42 years, never made it past a full day of quitting until now. I-m currently at 1 month, 1 week, and 4 days quit. Good luck and remember if you don-t have support at home on this to reach out to all the groups - everyone who-s had to go through it understands. God Bless - good luck!
I heard of a product called New root. I Don-t smoke so i don-t know, but its capsule form. You take it and in a couple days or weeks. You have a choice either keep taking it or the the cigarette taste REAL HORRIBLE. I found it in a health food store. It does have a web sight somewhere. Good luck on quiting, By the way this is suppose to help clear the lungs faster, and helps stop those food cravings.
Pure will power. that is the best and only way
there is no easy way or a best way. you just have to want it and be willing to change up everything neccessary to aid you. I used the patches for a minute but ended up doing it on my own. I just avoided the situations that made me crave cigarettes, such as night clubs. Then I changed up certain habits that were triggers for me. Like doing something after meals instead of smoking. Its only hard for the first week or so. Thhen it starts getting a lot easier.
go cold turkey....
Take a small empty squeeze bottle like an eye drop bottle and fill it with Vicks Formula 44 D and keep it in your shirt pocket or where you kept your cigarettes....When you have a craving for a cigarette, put a drop on your tongue, It has a very strong and long lasting taste and will take your mind off the cigarettes. Try it, it works. Might take a few weeks.........Nuf Said
Wear a rubberband around your wrist when you feel urges, slap it on your wrist so it hurts... sounds like your a mouse in a lab test, but it works!
drink milk everyday ,

doctor says that , once u drink milk ,then u dont like taste of cigarettes

then u quit smoking
Well, you COULD wait till you are lying in a hospital bed with OXYGEN TUBES running into your nose and IV bags dangling on either side of you and a Cardiologist comes in and says------you have maybe 2 months at LEAST and 5 years at BEST-...... sure did make ME quit the smokes....that was 6 MONTHS ago and I-m still here but I KNOW I am not going to be much longer... If you are young, QUIT NOW... go to the market and buy yourself a TON of those beautiful NAVAL ORANGES.... whenever you want a smoke, peel an orange---PEEL not cut---pull the pieces apart and eat each piece SEPARATELY.... this gives your hands and mouth something to do for about as long as it would take you to smoke a cigarette.... do this EVERY time you get a craving---oranges are good for you and NON fattening and as long as your hands and mouth are -kept busy- by the orange, you won-t miss OR crave a cigarette as much... eventually (within about 5 DAYS) you stop the cravings all together and can cut down on your ORANGE CONSUMPTION.... I was eating 8 oranges a DAY when I first quit.... now I eat 8 in a WEEK...(sometimes less)....

Okay again i quit smoking, now i am coughing, have a stuffy nose, and can not sleep, is this normal? -

Please let me know if all this is normal when you quit smoking?
Insomnia and cough are normal when you have quit. It doesn-t last forever... it will pass and is better than smoking again.

Go for a good walk with someone before you go to bed, the fresh air and exercise will help.

The cough is your body trying to rid of the toxins in your lungs... all the gunk that is stuck to them from smoking.

I-m going to pass along a site I used when I quit and it was a huge help (its free by the way):

Take the time to check it out... I think it will help you.

Does anyone have a testimony on either of these products?
I don-t trust any quit smoking method that deals only with physical nicotine addiction. Drugs especially because they are potentially dangerous also. I personally wouldn-t go near the stuff, especially when there are so many other ways of quitting.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

Quitting smoking does not require any patches, gums, herbs or drugs. These methods are expensive, time consuming, potentially harmful and simply do not work. All that is required is a bit of motivation, self belief and determination.

How did you quit smoking? -

I used Chantix and it worked and that is what I give the props to.

Go Chantix
Eventually, smoking became more boring than not smoking. I just stopped and told myself that if I were ever really stressed and had tried everything else to calm down, that I could smoke with my own permission. I had some rough times and smoked (just one night at a time) over a period of a year. The occasions became less frequent. Then I discovered that if I smoked because of stress, I felt less stressed out but horribly sick because of the smoking. Lol.
Coming up to three years since I made the decision.
They were going to amputate my foot....the doctor said that smoking would reduce my chance of healing and he figured it was easier to cut it off if I kept smoking.

DUHHHHHHH I quit, I have my foot, more money, don-t stink, never out of cigs and frantically smoking butts in the ashtray, less chance of -leathery skin-, don-t have to go out in the cold to smoke
I did it cold turkey, but I was never a heavy smoker to begin with. I only smoked socially. My husband on the other hand was a heavy smoker, and he used Chantix to quit. You need a prescription, and it can be expensive, but it-s definitely worth it. He-s been smoke free for almost 2 years now.
I quit smoking several years ago. Before I used to smoke for several yers, 1/2 - 1 pack a day! I just stopped smoking. I started to catch flues quite often with long-lasting caugh, I could have caugh for 3 weeks or more after the flu. Then I decided it-s enough smoking for me and just quit.
One day I just said -Enough!- I didn-t tell anyone because I didn-t want to have people asking about it constantly. Two weeks later someone asked if I had stopped. By then I had some new habits. It-s been MANY years since I stopped. I still, every now and then, think about cigarettes. I know I can-t pick up that first one. And I don-t.
keep thinking of how nasty it makes your clothes and breath smell, how yellow it will make your teeth, and how much your family will be affected and miss you when you start reaping the health issues cigarettes cause. then buy the patch and stick with it! good lcuk!
I found out I was pregnant! I quit cold turkey.....it was the best decission I could have made.
My mother just put them down and never picked them up again. She also had to avoid the situations that caused her to smoke (ie, friends/bars/etc).

It-s a tough path, but it-s worth it financially and health-wise.
Chewing gum and eating mints was what helped me. Everytime I wanted a cigarette I would just chew a piece of gum and it helped but I still craved it. You just have to have the willpower to stop and not just go have one more.
I stoppped smoking ciggerates . thats how . lol I never smoked
the longest ive quit for was a week. its f-ing rough man. chest started caving in. stuffs meaner to quit than heroin the doc says.
One of my friends got so drunk then SO hungover she felt sick smoking and she just never smoked again. Try that. Or when you-re ill just try to stop then because it will be easier.
Good question as I am wondering the same thing. I will be looking at this question to see the responses you get. Best Wishes.
cold turkey
Chantix...
Cold Turkey.....and alot of Juicy Fruit gum
never starting to smoke!! Best way ever.
Chantix and pure will!
One reason: I dont smoke

How long after you quit smoking do you fully recover? -

i have been smoking for 4 years now and i have decided to quit. will my body return to a normal healthy body as if i never smoked at all?
The body is constantly cleaning itself out. Fortunately you weren-t one of those people who smoked for 10, 20, 30 years. I guess it depends on how much you smoked per day. Were you a chain smoker during those years? Did you only smoke 2-3 cigs per day? Regardless though, damage has already occurred but probably not as severely as it could have if you would have continued to smoke. So, congrats on quitting. =) Even though tar build up in the lungs may be very difficult for your body to remove, I do personally believe it can happen especially if you exercise and make your body work out well. The increased circulation will assist the body in eliminating waste. Will your lungs ever return back to as if though you never smoked at all? Probably not but you probably didn-t do that much damage to begin with.
Here are just a few facts:

After 8 hours without a cig .....
Carbon monoxide in your body drops and oxygen levels in your blood increases to normal.

After 2 days.....
Your sense of smell and taste will improve. You will enjoy your food more.

After 2 weeks....
Nicotine has passed from your body.

Within 3 months....
Lung function increases up to 30%.

Within 6 to 9 months:
You-ll experience less coughing, sinus congestion, tiredness and shortness of breath.

After 1 year:
Your risk of heart disease will be about half of what it would have been if you continued to smoke.

After 5 years:
Your risk of stroke will be substantially reduced; within 5 to 15 years after quitting, it becomes about the same as a non-smokers.

After 10 years:
Your risk of dying from lung cancer will be about half of what it would have been if you had continued to smoke.
Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas will also decrease.

Within 15 years:
Your risk of dying from a heart attack is equal to a person who never smoked.

So no matter what your age is...you can benefit from quitting.

I am 22 years old, I have been smoking since I was 12. I smoke around 1 1/2 packs per day. I will be leaving for college in 4 months, the college is 100% smoke free on the entire campus, I will have to walk off campus in order to smoke. Tell me what you think. Also, any ideas on what helps you quit would be great! Thanks!
Being a first time father, activities that I had not partaken in were starting to be brought to my attention. Not in a good 7 years had I ever engaged in any type of playing, besides light football or softball throwing.

It became very apparent as my son grew to have over 20 pounds that it was not that hard to keep him in a backpack to carry him around. The pains that would occur when I attempted to pick him up and toss him around, much to his excitement, signaled that a change was needed, very soon.

Being a young man, I earned my first monies by mowing grass, up to 6 yards a week, which was always preceded and followed by my 100 house paper route. Through so many years, it was easy to do, stamina was built up, so there was no major exertion going on.

Now here I was, 26, but losing my breath just simply trying to play with my son. I would be sore, but never really seeming to have any real gains from this type of activity. I recalled the previous year, for the first time in many years, I had a lawn to mow. Sickness to my stomach, profuse sweating, gasping for air, I had to do small patches at a time.

Even with all the exertion and the over-exertion at that, I would promptly enjoy a smoke. I had attempted many years before to work out at a gym. Things went very bad, as I was very sick, headaches, throwing up. Once again, when I was able to breathe, I enjoyed a smoke.

I wanted to stop, but only once did I quit for about a month, only to start again during a period of stress. No gum, patch or spray was used, just cold turkey.

Finally, I had enough. Seeing a friend who has a father who practices ear, nose and throat medicine, I got the normal lecture that had failed before. Then my friend who is now a cariologist made this statement:

-It-s not fair to say that everyone who smokes gets cancer of some type. It is more truthful to say that of people who have lung cancer, most are smokers.-

Wow, that statement hit me really hard. My grandmother, who died of a blood clot due to having partial lung removals from smoking, had not even deterred me up to this point.

The circumstances were right; I had heard what I needed to digest. My motivations were many to quit, and I was already slowing down my smoking. Switching to an ultra light wasn-t the right thing - you drag differently to get more. From what I read and was told, you may get cancer deeper in the lungs by doing that.

So I quit using a patch cut in half, secured with medical tape(21 mg, or roughly 10 mg) and 2 mg gum when I needed that extra little bit. The first three days were harder, but I resisted having -just one-. My demeanor was not that of a raging bull. I wanted to quit - I had resolve to quit. There was no one but ME to blame for starting to smoke in the first place.

Only about 12 days after stopping smoking did I try to mow the lawn for the first time. I had no idea it was that impaired by smoking. I just kept mowing, not even with a self-propelled mower. I didn-t have to stop at all; my breathing wasn-t fast and furious. It was controlled, even and most of all, it felt great!

So, here I am today, on my first full month of not a single breakdown. I have no one tracking me, it-s only for the internal congrats of stopping, fully knowing that every week I get stronger.

I felt that I should let others know the gains I have seen, that possibly it will help you decide to stop for good, or shore up your resolve by letting you know what I felt.

* I deal with problems now instead of smoking them out. For the first two weeks, I did feel a bit -blonde-, but that is gone now.
* I can my mow my entire lawn plus more and not totally sap my strength.
* My lungs continue to feel more -spring-, elastic and clear every single day.
* I get to sleep faster, but also have better quality sleep.
* I can taste more flavor in food.
* I could smell a fire in my home now.
* I know from across the room that a diaper does in fact need to be changed.
* I save almost an hour or more a day that I would normally spend just -relaxing- by doing nothing helpful.
* I can have sexual relations without feeling like I am having a heart attack. Too many improvements to list here, but if you are a guy, some of the changes will surprise you.
* My breath smells better, or maybe I am compelled to brush my teeth now that I can taste and smell bad breath.
* I am saving $20 per week right now.
* All of my muscles are getting harder, more tone to them. I feel stronger, almost like I am 18 again.
* I can sing better, more clear, without rasping.
* Everything is staying white now.
* I still drink coffee, but I feel like I enjoy it more now.
* The heartburn that I was having no longer exists.
* I have 21 less things to think about per day, sometimes that was even 42 things to think about.
* I now know that you are less likely to land that new job if you smoke. * Nonsmokers know if you smoke even before you talk. They can smell it.
* My son was coughing up junk for a week when I put an end to smoking in the house. I-m still coughing, but he-s done with it. He only endured second hand smoke for a year. Funny, I can tell for sure, no doubt, he was affected.
* I care more about those around me - I value life more in all walks.
* I set an example for son, my niece, and even a friend who has smoked for 15 years, who will quit just due to me doing it. More important, my wife will finally quit.
* My house plants no longer drip brown, or have brown spots when I spray water on them.
* I can tell when a cat of ours has snuck somewhere and -messed- on the floor.
* My favorite other children, the cats and dog are lowering their cancer risks right now too.
* Are these reasons enough for me to quit? Only 8 reasons really matter:
* April: my wife
* Ethan: my son
* Frick: Our oldest cat
* Thomas: My most amazing cat
* Ms. Phrat: The troublemaker
* Tigger: The skittish one
* Bear: The only dog
* Me

I can only say one more thing that I have learned or thought of, and it may help you or someone you know.

The most oft heard reason to keep smoking:

-I like to smoke.-

My response:

-My grandmother still like smoking when she died at 62 from lung cancer complications.-

Best of luck, but you don-t need it. You are the only one who can quit for yourself.

~High~

I had written this in my E-Personal Diary.
certainly you should stop smoking not just for you but also for those around you.

to quit use a nicotine replacement patch or gum or both, you can get these prescribed

do not cut down gradually but stop in one go. find other things to do with your hands as this absence will probably hit as hard as the withdrawal itself.

tell all your mates you are quitting and get their support, if they smoke ask them to not smoke around you at least for the first six months.

take up something else you would enjoy and put the money you save from quitting toward that.

see quitting as part of your quest for health and longevity not the entire thing.

my mother died at 42 from smoking related cancer and it was painful and undignified, i have developed asthma as a direct result of growing up in a smoke filled house so yes quit
You should stop smoking now! Did you know that smoking shortens a smoker-s life by as much as 13 years? This is due to the various diseases that is associated with smoking; topping the list is lung cancer. Smoking also makes your aging process a lot faster than the normal rate. You can have wrinkles and lines on your face. You-re just 22, you would not like to look like you-re 40! So stop now and live longer!
Well, let-s ignore the health benefits of quitting, because you-re probably already aware of that. Having an addiction allows something else to control you, and nicotine is extremely addictive.

Personally, yes, I think it-s worthwhile to quit smoking. You-ll have more money to spend on other bad habits, too.
quit now, you have damaged ur lungs too much, and increased ur chances of geting lung and throat cancer, you have decreased ur sperm count, reduced ur white blood cells and left ur self more vulnerable to diseases.
Since nicotine is addictive willpower alone will not help u quit, u need to see ur doctor to discuss options, u need to quit before its too late
you know it-s bad for you ... so I am not going to take that path ... how much is a packet of smokes ? times that by the number of packets you smoke a week .. then times that amount by 52 ( ie weeks in the year) and then times THAT figure by ten ... now that doesn-t allow for the rising cost of cigarettes ... BUT it will give you a rough idea on how much money you could have saved if you didn-t smoke it away ...

SO .. what would you like to buy with that ...
Ok well I-m surprised the current prices of cigarettes haven-t persuaded you already. Maybe the having to walk off campus everytime you want to light up will.
makes you get relaxed, and sometimes happy or more interested on your health?

both sound fancy to me
Yep. Will improve your health dramatically.
I am a 61 year old mother and grandmother who has COPD --Chronic
Obstructive Pulminary Disease--which shortens life and makes breathing very difficult.I smoked when I was young but not a whole lot.
Not near like you do. If you could have this disease (which I pray you never do) for even one day you would see the harm in smoking even one cigarette.I ask you--would you sit down and drink a glass of
-embalming fluid- ? Well check the ingredients in your cigarettes.....they have embalming fluid in them along with alot of other nasty junk you would never feed into your body orally yet you are inhaling it everytime you take a puff of smoke. This crap is going directly into your Lungs and staying there and building up there to
eventually kill you! Is this not a good enough reason to quit smoking?
Well, if not, then WAKE UP! Realize that you are also doing that same harm or even worse to everyone you love who are around you! Do you want to harm your loved ones and friends? Think of others even if you don-t think of yourself! It sounds like you have an excellent place to stay to stop smoking to me--a 100 % smoke free college. You didn-t say if this is a christian college or not but it does sound like it possibly is--if so you can get alot of help from there also.Above all, pray and ask the Dear Lord to help you to stop smoking. He loves you and He cares about you more than anyone else ever will and He created your body and cares what happens to it and only He can really give you the strength to say -NO- and mean it. I know because of so much personal experience through the past 50+ years of knowing Him and never being let down by Him even one time. You might think he let me down by my having COPD but -no-, He didn-t tell me to be so STUPID and hurt the body He gave me--I did it..but He is the ONE who is giving me the strength to live each day with it.Each day I wake up to see my loved ones and watch my precious grandsons play and live their lives I have Him to thank for it! I PRAY THAT YOU WILL STOP NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!! I have two sons who smoke and I am also praying for them. They do not smoke around mom but they are still carrying a certain amount into our home which I do not like. I am praying for them both and trying to encourage each of them. One of them has two little sons who are being exposed to this nasty stuff.
I had smoke in my home growing up as a kid and the Drs. say that second hand smoke can do as much or even more harm as first hand
smoke can.You will be in my prayers! I do pray that you having to walk off of campus to smoke might help you stop.Add up all of the money you spend on smokes and then think of something else you have always really wanted to have and if you stop smoking you-ll be shocked at how much other needs and wants you can have. You have already made the most essential step of all--you want to stop..that is #1.I wish you the very best!!!

I had a baby in October 2008. I didn-t smoke while pregnant. I have found myself smoking 1-5 cigarettes a day and can-t seem to quit..Any tips for quitting completely?
That first responder was obviously high while writing his response....

Anyways, what helped or worked for me was smoking cheaper smokes that taste real bad. I could only handle to light it and then put it out. Averaging about 1-2 smokes per day. It was a re-light festival until I finally decided I just didn-t want it anymore. That was after 24 years of smoking and a whole lot more per day than you too so you may see quicker results. A whole lot of it is mind set too. Good Luck

i have been trying to quit for ages, i have tried everything read books ,taken pills, patches, i have been trying smoke deter it says it replaces some of the needs rather than cold turkey, its a spray, you use a couple of times a day,it really has been helping, this is the longest i have gone without, at the moment they are doing an offer with two free bottles,it costs but it really is working.
yeah the best thing to do if you want to stop smoking 1-5-cig a day is smoke more weed get high more often and youll soon be on the road to forgeting about cigarettes. as youll then crave a joint instead. Happy smoking!! see you at the party soon.

Are there any effective ways?
Don-t get those patches and gums. You-ll only get addicted to them and their more expensive.

It really depends on the type of person you are. If you have a strong will-power then you should just stop smoking. But if you don-t then I suggest a substitute. Like when you have a craving just nibble of a carrot or something. My sister had a lot of food cravings after she stopped and she nibbled on peas! Try to look for something healthy. It doesn-t have to be food. Its just finding something to do to keep your mind off the cravings. After some time you-ll naturally get used to it and may find the cigarette smoke irritating. You can also reward yourself like if you haven-t smoked for 1 week and so on.

I know many people who had troubles quiting. Its not easy! If you have a plan and that-s to quit then stick to it!

Good luck!
my husband was only 25 when he quit. I didn-t know him then, but he said that he was grumpy for about a week, but he quit cold turkey. I also know some others that have been successful with the nicotine patch. . good luck. i am proud of you for trying. and if you don-t succeed that first time, don-t give up. and even if you smoke a cigarette once, it doesn-t mean you have failed, just keep trying the next day.
QUIT smoking!!!
thats pretty obvious!!!
Always have something with you (on your pocket, bag, etc) that you can get your fingers on or always have finger foods when you want to put something in your mouth. That way, you-ll start to stop wanting to HOLD a ciggarete and stop wanting to put one in your mouth.
If you can find a buddy who also wants to quit, do it together. That-s how I did it, 15 years ago. You don-t want to end up looking wrinkly - scraggy before your time, you don-t want to smell like an ashtray, and you don-t need health problems. You can do it! You-ll feel SOOO much better for it.....
First consult a doctor and if you got a strong will power then think of smoking as the worst thing and the dirtiest you-ve ever heard of and if you love your life then you gotta leave that ****!
Good luck.
as previous answers suggest, talk to your doctor

as a short term help, try buying the absolute opposite of what you normally smoke...
for instance, if you smoke menthol....buy a non-menthol non filtered smoke....or vice versa
hopefully, the taste of the smoke itself will be unpleasant enough to help you quit...

also,,,,,,avoid having smokes where you normally have them
and watch yourself with -habits-....psychological as much as physical...
for instance, a smoke when you drink, after a meal, answering the phone, going to the john, on a long car ride...very often , you will be reaching for a smoke without being aware of it....
very hard to break these habits...
good luck
Yes there is a new prescription drug on the market, ask your doctor about it. Get support from all yor friends and family. Do it now, don-t set a date and then plan on doing it, otherwise you probably won-t. Increase your life expectancy and quality of life by quiting now.
Dear Buddy, Determination to quit smoking is the very first step and you-ve got the determination. I found this link that might be of use to you. I don-t know if its effective as I-m not a smoker; but anyway it-s worth a try for you since you have the determination to quit smoking. :)

Do you think that part of the high tax on cigarettes should be used to help people to quit smoking? -

I think people are going to smoke regardless of how high the tax is, it is ridiculous how much tax is on them to start with, and yes i think they should be putting some of that money back into helping people quit, but realistically they are creaming all that tax on them and if everyone quit where would they make up that extra revenue?

Sure, why not? I just quit smoking - I had to pay a lot of money to do it, some help would have been nice. I mean, only smokers are going to take advantage of something like that (because non-smokers don-t need to quit) so why not let them pay for it, in advance. The general public is just going to have to pay for the medical needs of those who are uninsured - sick from smoking so go ahead - cut my taxes - tax them instead.
No, that-s a silly reason. It-s like picking a cash cow that-s dying of hoof and mouth disease. Right now, we tax cigarettes and keep raising the taxes for schools and roads and children-s healthcare. Then, some Congressman says -and it should be more of an incentive for people to quit-. WHAT!? Then what happens to schools and roads and children-s healthcare? If it has to finance this important stuff the government needs to encourage people to smoke.
yes and no smoking is going to kill you and people still do it. so why not let them kill there selfs
Well for how much tax is on 1 pack of cigarettes, people who smoke should get a Little more consideration if you ask me. I quit smoking almost a year ago, but I still think it-s crappy how smokers are treated like 2nd rate citizens. You would think with all that tax revenue they would at least be able to provide smokers with somewhere to smoke and be able to help them quit. Drunk people bother me far worse than smokers and you can still get drunk at some family restaurants, that kind of hypocritical.
yes... we should take advantage of peoples addiction!
The purpose of the tax in some countries, other than to generate government revenue, is to provide funds for the remedy of the problems the items create. One example is in recycling. A government (City, State or National) may charge several extra cents for every can of soft drink that is sold. Then from its revenue, it takes every two cents they earned from the can taxes, and give it to companies that recycle the cans. In other words, the consumers pay for the recycling through the extra tax tagged onto the price of the soft drink cans.

The higher tax on cigarettes therefore should also be used to fund -quit smoking- campaigns as well as other ills caused by smoking - such as lung cancer.

5 weeks today and counting!!!!!!! I smoked for 20 years.
tired of waking up coughing my lungs up every morning and also tired of throwing away $120 a month. Honestly I miss the taste and holding a cigarette in my hand but then I remember waking up this morning and breathing better than before, IT IS WORTH IT!
I did 10 months ago between the patch and an online support group

What do you think about side effects of chantrix to quit smoking? -

What do you think about side effects of chantrix to quit smoking? -

i see people say its had bad side effects and cost too much, lung cancer has alot worse side effects and to continue to smoke cost lot more than chantrix.i personaly would recomend it. it worked for me
I saw on the news that there was a couple taking Chantrix to quit together. The man and woman were having weird dreams and would discuss them. One night the man was sleep walking and started to attack his girlfriend. Scared to death she ran to the neighbors, the neighbors thought it was a stranger and shot the man to death. I know quitting is the best option but because I-m trying to quit as well this gives me some concern. Has anyone else read this story or heard this on the news like I did?
I also recommend it. It worked for me and the only side effects I had were vivid dreams and an occasional headache (but I-m not sure the headaches were even from the chantix, could have just been withdrawals.) I think when someone does have a bad reaction, or just thinks they have it gets alot more media attention than when everything goes to plan.

The reason you cant use nicotine with it is that it blocks the nicotine receptors. The sucess rate with Chantix is ridiculously higher than with the nicotine replacement stuff! Something like 30% quit with Chantix compared to 5% with nicotine replacement. The Fing cigarette companies market nicorette and all that, so they-re out for money not your health.

I quit smoking 11 months ago, I used Chantix for 2.5 months a totall cost of like 200$ (less than what I would have spent on cigarettes) I-m totally over it now. My boyfriend (who smoked for 7 less years than I did) quit at the same time with the gum, he struggled and still does to this day. To this day he STILL chews the gum (hundreds more $ than me at this point.)
it does cost alot more than other produces for smoking cessation. and the big draw back is that you cannot use tobacco replacement produces with it. It has been statistically shown that there is a greater amount of people that are cured of their addiction with using several products, like the gum, the patch, and maybe wellbutrin. So, while it worked great for you overall the other stuff works better. And with so many people without health insurance or health insurance that wont cover chantrix it is too expensive of a medication.

My friend just caught her 10 year old sister smoking cigs!
her sister has been hanging out wit older boys that r about 13-14 and they smoke cigs so she did it too.
she hung out wit them cuz nobody likes her for sum reason.
my friend asked her how often she smoked and she said everyday she would smoke 1-2 packs.
she cant quit smoking and its horrible.
how can i help my friends sister?
i just feel so bad cuz shes so young.
You really have to tell an adult. They can help get the right things to help her stop.
It is not that unusual for a 10 y/o to smoke. But I seriously doubt she really smokes 1-2 ppd without her parents buying them for her. I think that is the amount she would like to smoke, not how much she really smokes.

I doubt if you can help her. Her parents should be the ones to try, but if she likes smoking that much, she will probably continue. A better approach might be for her parents to let her smoke at home and get her away from bad influences.
Hello,

It is good to hear that you want her to quit! I personally found the guide offered at
http://www.stoppingsmokingtips.net
to be very helpful when I quit smoking. Good luck to you!
This worked for me it-s a little weird something subliminal but it was free so just tried it and it worked amazingly.

get it here: http://www.quitsmokingin3minutes.com

as i said its free so what do you have to lose?
Mel
A lot of people start young. Really do anything you can to get her to stop, because it gets much harder to quit as the days go on.
um well you could show her what it does to your body or like if she doesn-t smoke for 2 hours or something your friend will buy her a chocolate bar or 1 day a new CD briding works
Please encourage your friend to stop. My mother started around her age - finally stopped at 60 years old.

Today my mom has COPD. She lives off an oxygen tank. Not attractive at all.
Opinion A... TELL AN ADULT... and they will be able to help with the situation...

Opinion B... Tell her why smoking is bad for her and that she needs to stop or you will tell an adult...
Show her how unattractive it is. There are also some videos on Youtube you could watch. Some are kinda gross.
well because shes so young tell an adult! thats not good.

I quit smoking weed and I need help? -

I am hot and cold at the same time, a lot of times. Has anybody else ever felt like that after quitting? Please be serious, this is serious.
You-re probably having some mild anxiety from quitting smoking.. That can give you chills which make you feel hot and cold at the same time.. You-re probably thinking about it way too much.. Relax and try to do something else to take your mind off of it.. And it will go away shortly.
I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article:

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!
Matthew.
I-ve never heard of such a thing happen to anyone that quit smoking marijuana. Study after study has proven marijuana not to be physically addictive. It-s probably something else going on, and your just blaming it in a harmless plant to cover up your problems.
Typical :/

How do I help a friend quit smoking pot? -

my friend is 16 and is going through a hard time right now. he really doesn-t enjoy life. i am trying to help him quit smoking pot and he smokes cigarrettes too. he says he really wants to turn his life around but its hard when all of his friends are drugees too...so what do i do? he loves all of his friends but i think it-ll be too hard for him to quit when they are always around him. they are also really mean to him too, if he says he wants to quit...so please help me!!!
We all know he will have to stop hanging out with his pot head friends. But only he can make that decision You are a good friend for wanting to help him. But i suggest you leave him alone for awhile. Maybe then he will really want to change
You can tell him you will be there for him no matter what. You can point out the fact that his other friends aren-t true friends if they would put you down for wanting to quit. But you know what? He will probably not understand that until much later in life ;) Just be there for him. Hang out with him. Tell him if he ever needs to talk he can call you. Good luck.
Keep supporting him the rest is up to him
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
Hey,

He-s the only one to make that decision. You can-t force him, if he-s smart he-ll give it up and if he-s not well.....

16 and smoking pot eh? Well, he has to get new friends and start acting responsible - then again, he-s only 16 - perhaps he needs a wake up call.

Just refuse to hang around him - alienate him for a while - I don-t know - hit him really hard with a bat.

I just can-t abide pot smokers - but think about it
This is a tricky task. He has no chance of quitting unless he knows he needs to and really wants to. Peer Pressure is not a factor beyond environmental cues.

Point out the dangers.

Let him decide.

Be a good friend and let him choose.

Do you want to quit smoking? -

I have been quit for 6 days and just wonder how many other people want to. Studies say that oveer 90 percent of smokers want to quit.
I have smoked for 40 years and quit 4 years ago. Only because I can-t afford it. I would smoke in a minute if I were rich and could afford them. I really liked it. Now I just smoke in my mind, or puff on a straw with cotton in the end. LOL
I quit smoking cold turkey ,, 8 years ago,,,,, Never one cigarette since then, thou I still crave them from time to time when I see someone else smoking,,, When I smoked I enjoyed them alot,, they relaxed me,,, Thou I started to feel nauseated whenever I smoked, and quit for this reason,,,, I can breathe alot better and dont have trouble with lungs feeling congested as I did when I smoked,,, I have heard food tastes better to non smokers,,, this I think is a myth, food tastes the same to me as before,,, I think all smokers would like to quit,, #1 for their health,, and #2 to save all that money cigarettes cost,,, Good Luck - Take Care
Yes I want to but I have too much stress to make it happen, maybe when homeland security lets me bring my wife here I can relax. It takes so long to get through Immigration doing it the right way it isn-t even funny.
I need to, and because of this part of me wants to, but so many factors make me convince myself I-m better off keeping at it. My friends and I are smokers, and we-ve grown to adore smoking outside and drinking diet whatevers while talking. I feel like it-s my crutch to maintaining my weight, and it-s so much apart of who I-ve become.
One day, however, I-ll be very miserable that I allowed myself to never quit. Congrats on 6 days. That-s really a long time for a smoker. A day without one, and I would be lost. Don-t give up!
Yes it can cause lung cancer but i don-t do it i-m only twelve

I am somking from the past 11 years - and I have tried many times to quit , but resulted in a failure. please suggest in detail
hi jack...

i smoked for over 40 years, the last 4 or 5, continually quitting and restarting.. i tried every method available to me.. cold turkey, nicotine replacement products (ie. gum and patches etc), and pharmaceuticals. nothing seemed to work..

as of today i have been nicotine free for over 5 years, because of my involvement in the nicotine anonymous program.. there is something about being with other quitters, and learning from those who have quit, that works, when other methods fail.. meetings are available in many locations, as well as a number of voice meetings are available on the Internet.. you are welcome to attend meetings while still smoking, in fact the fellowship encourages people to attend before attempting a quit!! good luck my friend as there is really no wrong way to quit!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
Find a medication or a doctor to help you quit smoking.

You may try herbal remedies for smoking as it is a great way to end the digesting habit of smoking. There is no reason to continue to harm your health by smoking and you should try to find anyway that you can to end this habit and get yourself on the right track. Stop smoking herbs are a great form of this type of health and you will be a better person for it once you have seen the results.

I want to quit smoking but I dont know how to start? -

Its so much easier not to smoke!

Ok the first day can be a little challenging.
But within a week. You-ll find that all of a sudden your day at work goes so much smoother. Because your not always waiting for your next cigarette.

I recommend cold turkey, but have a patch on hand for those nights when you are going out for a beer or coffee, etc.. But you really don-t have to.

Have plenty of snacks to keep your hand and mouth occupied. I liked dried goji berries, and nuts. Dried apple etc.

spend plenty of time rewarding yourself, like walking, going to the gym. Try swimming before and after you stop smoking notice the difference.

Put 10dollars away every day, it adds up.

Call yourself a non-smoker, But don-t tell anyone you quit, make it a private privileged smile.

decide which day you-ll stop smoking and when you stop stop.

Never have that morning cigarette in the mean time. It gives you a good 9+ hours of detox. Thats long enough for most of the nicotine to leave your body.

When you get cravings, celebrate your bodies new choice take some cleansing breath and 5 minutes later ou-ll be over it.

Taste great food, for the first time in a while THATS HOW ITS SUPPOSED TO TASTE.
If you want to quit cold turkey, just throw away your cigarettes. There-s lots of advice about how to get through the withdrawal, but in my experience, most of it doesn-t do much. The most important is to avoid any stress -- take time off if you can, particularly for days 3-5, which are the worst. Sucking on hard candy helps, it can-t be the sugarless kind -- the sugar seems to reduce cravings a bit. If you have an earring, twirling it can help -- strange but true. And keep in mind that you can-t cheat. You-ll probably tell yourself that -I-m just going to take the edge off by having one cigarette,- but the moment you do that you-ll be right back where you were.

If cold turkey doesn-t work, get a prescription for Chantix and follow the instructions. Not everyone can take it -- some people get depressed, nauseous, or have other bad side effects -- but for those who can it works better than anything else.

If that doesn-t work, Wellbutrin, another pill.

You can also try nicotine replacement therapy -- I-ve had the best results with the Commit Lozenges. Just follow the instructions. The worst that can happen is you-ll end up using the lozenges instead of smoking -- I did that for a couple of years. That-s not as good as stopping, since you-ll still be taking in some nicotine, but there-s no cancer risk.

Finally, consider the mini e-cigarettes that they make in China. They-re almost exactly like smoking, but without the cancer risk. (They still have nicotine in them, though, so they have a cardiovascular risk.)
*list down reasons why you need to stop smoking
*research on what disease you migh have if dont stop smoking
*if you cant go cold turkey, lessen the number of sticks you consume everyday
*try some herbal medicines, they say it is safer than nicotine patches
start by not buying smokes.....
Make up your mind..i mean a stong determination and go on...

How do i get my parents to quit smoking? -

How do i get my parents to quit smoking? -

they always try, and fail. i constantly push them to quit, but it never works
piont out to them that while they are smoking in the same room as you then you are also smoking, because second hand smoke is a killer, plus tell them how much you care about them.
Then proceed to blackmail, saying -if you love me you would quit.-

If they say it isnt that simple, say it is.
Ask them how they would feel if you took up smoking and they had to watch you killing yourself everytime you breath those horrid toxins into your body.

They should quit, if not, then you dont really matter to them I guess, because quitting smoking isnt that hard when you are doing it for someone you love. Trust me.

If they dont, also you could show them this post
They have to want to stop because they REALLY want to.

LASER threrapy really works.
Laser Therapy helps to balance endorphin levels, thus helping to control the addiction and pacify the cravings. It assists you to stop smoking - the all encompassing cravings are gone.

Laser treatment is the application of a cold, non-evasive pain free laser beam to specific points of the body which stimulates and releases endorphins.

This helps enable individuals to concentrate on lifestyle changes associated with becoming smoke free. Laser Treatment is a very relaxing experience, something you probably have not been promised in the past as you tried to stop smoking.

The treatment is completely painless and in 20 minutes you can become smoke free! We use a low level laser (also known as a therapeutic or cold laser). It works along the same principle as acupuncture but of course, no needles.

GOOD luck!
call a doctors office, or pharmacy, maybe a health center. See if you can get all kinds of free samples. Some places give out free stuff to encourage people to quit. There has never been a better time to quit than now, with all the new aids that have come out recently ! But, you cannot force them. Putting them under the stress of a timetable, or feeling pressured, could cause them to smoke even more ! Just get the samples, pamphlets, info, etc.... and leave them all over the house, at least 2 or 3 spots where you know they will find them.
tell them if they can-t do it for themselves,do it for they-re children, tell them you want them to be around for your children.
print out alot of things off the web and leave them around everyday.go to Chantix.com,the stop smoking pill and print it all out.get the info on every type of gum,pill,inhalers,etc.etc.and keep putting it where they can find it.Don-t give up on them!
Just tell them that it-s not good for them and that it actually eats out your lungs. So if they want to live they have to quit
tell them how dissapointed u r of them
serach the net for some really disgusting pictures of lung cancer and also go to youtube and type about lung cancer and show them some of those-im trying to make mine quit to lol im going ot do this lol
You really can-t -make- someone quit. They have to want to do it themselves. Maybe they should try acupunture or hypnosis? It is a hard thing to do. Going -cold turkey- is the best way though. You can try to educate them on the risks of smoking by leaving articles on the effects of smoking, or having their Dr. talk to them. Not only that, but their second-hand smoke is harmful to you.
Please give them credit for trying!

It is quite common for someone to attempt to quit multiple times before the actually do quit. I think the average is 5 attempts.

Most people who fail on their attempts to quit, feel ashamed and frustrated. Many people who quit don-t even tell anyone that they are trying to quit, in case they do fail. I was definitely one of those people!

Have your parents see their doctor to see what smoking cessation aids, if any, would work for them.

Good luck to you and your parents!!!
Honey, as long as they keep TRYING------they will succeed someday.

My kids always wanted me to stop, but I was clueless about how NASTY it was until I was left as a sigle homeowner---then it was keep the house, or keep the cigs.

I kept the house---now 3 yrs smoke free after a 27 yr habit. And I-m as anti-smoking as you can GET!!!!!
Keep fighting for it - NEVER give up!
There are many aids to help quit smoking. There are patches and prescription drugs that are supposedly very effective.
Threaten to kill them. They are already doing it to themselves just slower.
It may be a dumb example and advice, but you should join them. Yeah, have them se you smoke and tell them -I-ll quit when you quit- and hopefully they get a guilt trip and try harder to stop. Like I mentioned, it-s a dumb thing that might just work; seeing that they-re setting a wrong example can get them to quit.
Have them try Nicorette fruit chills, supposedly it is a good tasting stop smoking gun. If you haven-t graduated or married yet ask them if they want to see you do either one beacuse of how bad smoking is for you!
A Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking- may be of interest.
Smoking is a very hard habit to break. Have they tried the patches? they work pretty good. But you have to WANT to quit. Dont push them too hard. They will quit when they get ready.

How did you quit smoking? -

planning to stop on monday, been a smoker for thirty five years, any tips would be most welcome, got a months supply of patches and lozenges, is it better to keep a packet of cigarettes in the house or have none at home.
This works, try:

1. Cold turkey.
2. Throw all your cigs. Yes, throw them in a bucket of water. This is where you tell your mind to be strong. Be ruthless about it.
3. Throw ashtrays. Keep none in the house.
4. Drinking coffee? Do it at a different place than your regular. Read newspaper with coffee? Don-t. Read it on the kitchen table or whatever - different from what you normally do. Change your trigger points.
5. No drinking beer or alcohol whatsoever for the next 1 month.
6. Associate with non-smokers all the time. Stay away from smoker friends for a while. Find any excuse to stay away from them.
7. When you get the urge, drink water. Plenty of it.
8. Wait for the urge to go away. It is temporary. Take a shower even if that means 4 or 5 times a day.
9. First week can be rough. After that you are over the hill.
10. Congratulate yourself. Kiss your wife deep, real deep. (hopefully your wife is a non-smoker, LOL).

Been there, done that, a happy non-smoker now. I did all of the above and passing it on FWIW.

Good luck.
Good luck to you! It is best to get rid of any regular cigarettes in the house (or anywhere else). Decide not to give yourself the option. I wish you all the luck in the world - go get-em! I smoked for 30+ years. Although I tried all the patches, pills, gum and lozenges - I failed. But then I found www.stopsmokingwithecigarettes.com and picked up a kit with 2 extra cartridges (low - med). That was the trick for me. I went from 1+ packs per day to freedom. I hope you succeed! Don-t give up!
First off well done for wanting to.
If you do not succeed it is not a failure you are just not ready!
I gave up a year and 2 months ago. I was a smoker for as long as you having started when pretty young. I smoked at least 20 a day for 20 years.
First off you have to really, really, really want to stop. It is no good trying to stop for your family, friends etc. It has to be because YOU want to. I am saying this because I have two friends who have fought and won against cancer and yet still smoke! Both tried to give up for their families and both were unable to.
I finally managed to stop by reading everything I could find about the effects of smoking. We all know it causes cancer but do you know all the other things it does to your body?
My children are in their teens and I tried to imagine how they would be married with a family of their own. Then imagine myself not there as I had died from emphysema, cancer of the throat, face, lungs.
I set a date and made sure that all the stuff I needed to smoke was gone. No ashtrays in the house, no lighters, papers etc. (I smoked roll ups) All I left myself with was the one packet of papers and all the dregs out of every packet over the last 6 months so it was really rough on my lungs.
I made sure I smoked all of this on the last day so my lungs were sore and the taste in my mouth disgusting. I made a point of not going around any friends houses for at least a week if they smoked.
I no longer crave a cigarette but I do notice something is missing occasionally especially after eating or a particularly nice cup of tea.
Good luck :))) I am with you in spirit all the way!
I have not had one since tuesday evening smoked for about 48years sure is hard but I will not give in I have got Nicotinell Lozenges I had heard they were horrible but I have got mint ones and really it is just like sucking a mint I don-t mind them at all you can have up to 30 of them a day but I find 8 to 10 is plenty For the first 2 days I did not tell anybody I was doing it I had cigs at the side of my chair and ashtray I think it helped It was like a game when would my husband notice but I told him in the end but have forbidden him to mention it I don-t anyone to keep on about it I have a opened packet of cigs with me when I go out I think I would panic and want one more if I knew I didn-t have one with me . I went to see the nurse at my local doctors she went through all the different ways with me I didn-t want patches years ago I tried them and had terrible nightmares I only lasted a week I didn-t want chewing gum as I have dentures so it was lozenges and so far I think they are great .It is not easy I will not pretend it is A tip I was given is if it gets really bad have a drink of ice cold water that does seem to help . For xmas I was given a d s light I have the brain power game so with that and my lap top I am keeping my hands busy good luck to you if I can get this far so can anyone
the first time i gave up was because me and my boyfriend (who i loved to bits!!) planned to go to a football match but my mam caught me smoking an hour before i was due to leave and i got grounded, so my boyfriend said if i didnt stop smoking he would break up with me.. that did the trick the first time and i didnt smoke for 14 months! the next few times i went cold turkey and lasted a couple of months each time, and my most recent time i went to a smoking clinic, got patches, pills, lozenges, gum and the inhalator and i lasted about 1 month! i felt better when i had a cigarette lying beside my bed as knowing i could smoke it at any time made me feel like i didnt want it lol if you get what i mean?? i never felt tempted to smoke it although i ALWAYS had cravings, even during the 14 months that i was smoke free i still have cravings lol i just kept thinking -will they ever stop?!- but they didnt and i dont think they ever would have. Its very very easy to quit smoking as the strength of the cravings will stay the same throughout - you just need to be able to control it :) mind, i found that by using nicotine replacments it was a lot harder as you still think about the nicotine youre getting and you know you wold rather have a cigarette.. which is why i started up again lol

My advice? put a cigareete beside your bed, and one where you usually smoke, dont use nicotine replacements. You will find it a lot easier! and if that dont work, use relacements next time. whichever way you last longest, set another date to quit and do it the way you found best :)

good luck hun! :)
Totally isolate yourself from them, this means no cigarettes in the house. Do other stuff with your hands, for example hold a pen there when you want to smoke a cigarette, also chew gum if you want something to do with your mouth. Have family/friends support you through it, it will make quitting way easier.
How can non-smokers actually give advice on how to quit smoking? PLEASE! I was also a smoker-37 years! I have been smoke free for 14 months now. My husband has been smoke free for 1 year! We both used Chantix. You-ll need to get a prescription from your doctor. Join the free web site for support if you want. I did just to keep track of my progress. I didn-t follow all of the advice they give, but some of it may be helpful for you. For the first 2-3 months you will still smoke, but the cravings gradually get less and less. Don-t PLAN a quit day as they suggest-it will happen naturally. Don-t stress if you go 1 day, 1 week or longer without a smoke and then have one. Just continue the medicine for the entire 6 months. The only side effect both my husband and I had was vivid dreams. (kind of cool) I know of a couple of people who had other side effects such as anxiety attacks and were forced to stop the meds (and they started smoking again). Just be aware that those are rare but can happen. It worked for me and my husband. I still sometimes want a smoke but I won-t. When I smell cigarette smoke, that-s when I remember how long I smoked, the damage it did and how proud I am of me that I quit! Best of luck to you! I wish you great success!
smoked 40 per day and for about 30 years. my wife and i decided to give up, as we had tried before. there must have been more determination by us to succeed and that was 19 years ago, no patches etc, just guts to do it. We had finished up smoking herbal cigs that were like horse muck, maybe that was the deciding factor. Give yourself 100% for trying, be determined and you will succeed, best of luck.
good for you me and you both ... it is the second time for me so i know what to expect ...

Try the gum . .tescos do a great one and it works for me . .the patches irriated me and the lozenges were not for me ..

Never have any cigs in the house as you will find or make an excuse to have one .. trust me i have been there

The person who mentioned the butts and water is so right .. when i wanted one i smelt an ashtray and it instantly put me off .. it sounds odd but it does work

good luck xxx
hi good luck i have tried so many times and will continue to try i think that all the answers here play a part but at the end of the day it is all about will power you just have to tell yourself you are a non smoker and when you really belive it you will have stoped i don-t have will power so i am still smoking but will try again soon cos i maneged to stop drinking and taking drugs so i no i can stop smoking i just need will power
I smoked pot. haha
Seriously, it did help completely.
It-s easier to drop that than cigarettes.

Or quite with a friend. It easy to get through it with some support.

And it-s probably best not to have a packed.
You might get into that -oh i-ll just have one cigarette to get rid of these craving-. Noooo don-t do it.

Good Luck to you. I am sure you will kick the habit!
I believe in you!! haha
Hi
I went a Hypnotist 30 years ago , it cost me £10 and the session last about half an hour, I had a cigarette just before I went in and had 3 ciggies left in a packet on my car dash board, they stayed their until they were practically dust .
This was the best £10 i have ever spent
Good Luck

Josser
well i did stop, so i know i can if i want to but i dont... i used the inhalor thingy its brill, tho it has menthol added which i hate. i am going to get one of those electronic cigs they seem ideal and you can smoke them anywhere (the rebel in me will enjoy puffing it in pubs, restaurants, buses, trains etc maybe even in tesco for a reaction!!)
My sister read one of Alan Carr-s books and said it really helped. I think you can get them in most book shops. Good luck!

Ooooh - also I-ve heard that keeping some old butts in water in a jar is a good idea. If you want a cigarette, open the jar and smell the butts... eww!

Also, try not to drink if it makes you want a ciggie!
I never smoked in my life.

But to give up, I-d actually suggest waiting a few weeks, the start of the new year is stressful for everyone and only serves to fuel your cravings.
When My Uncle Quit He Said That The Chewing Gum Worked Best. Or Nothing At All, Just Stop.
Throw All Your Fags Away And Don-t Buy Any More..
Good Luck.

Well I never Smoked, And I never will But here-s a good Advice.
instead of a Cigarette , Keep chewing a gum. It will keep you busy.
I never started so it was very easy =)

Good luck quitting :)

go down the NHS or w/e they have quit smoking classes
Hang around places you would never smoke, it helps, smoking is 90% habit vs. 10% addiction
Sheer guts, self confidence, discipline and a packet of fruity chews.
whenver you tempted to smoke just chew a chewing gum or walk for few minutes it may help.
If you want to quit you will quit it .I quit after i smoked 25 years .
i wasnt a smoker
Dont put the cigarette in your mouth.

This will prevent you smoking...

If I smoke a cigar or a clove during the time I am trying to quit smoking cigs, will that scre me up? -

most definitly!!!! i gave up smoking 2years 3months and 12 days ago i keep track of it to remind me how well im doing. it was hard at first considering my partner isa and still is an 8 a day smoker (he goes outside and i dont follow). i quit cold turkey, as i made it a mind over matter thing. i kept 5 cigarettes in a drawer that were mine and mine alone, so that if i had a craving i knew i had one handy (i still have 5 in the drawer) also if you assosciate alcohol with smoking cut your intake as it makes the craving unbareably strong. good luck with the quitting, hope i helped!
Yes. Cigars not only have a higher tar concentration than cigarettes, they also have more nicotine. Cloves also are high in nicotine and are more detrimental to your health than cigarettes. Get some nicotine gum or the patch to help you out.
Thats not quitting thats cutting down
Yeh, it will (just my own experience tho - not a medical one)

The strength of addiction to cigarettes is the psychological addiction. The action of smoking is what I missed most - filling that void with any smoking related activity really defeats the purpose, because you are still feeding that facet of the addiction.

Best of luck with your quest to quit - it really is tough - I applaud anyone who achieves their goal.
Psychologically no.. It will help. But physically its bad because your getting a healthy dose of nicotine even if you don-t inhale. I started smoking a pipe a long time ago. The flavor was so good that cigarettes tasted bad to me, so I quit smoking cigs. But I got tired of the pipe lifestyle and quit that too. So maybe the flavor will cure your cig urge, but you-re really just replacing the mental urge to smoke into another medium. Try the patch. It really helps.
are you still smoking?

then yes it will screw you up.
yes i tried the same things and all those made it was worse i wanted the real thing. Your best bet is to try gum but dont do the cigar.
if you have the urge to smoke try some hoch and have fun with it
yes it will it is tobacco you got to quit cold turkey

WHen I use to smoke I could run a far way then I quit smoking and couldnt run as far and now ive started? -

WHen I use to smoke I could run a far way then I quit smoking and couldnt run as far and now ive started? -

smoking again and can run farther than ever. . Does anyone know why?
I have experienced this first hand as well. I-m a smoker of 17 years and whenever I quit smoking, within 2-3 days, it becomes significantly harder to run. The reason I can offer, keep in mind I-m not a doctor, is fluid in the lungs. When you stop smoking, your cicilia can start to work agian and your lungs temporarly experience a decline in efficiency. The cicilia will start to move all the tar from the bottom of your lungs to your mouth, where you can spit it out. It should have never gotten there in the first place, lol. Anyway, give it a couple of months, and you will be faster than your previous timings.
probably because your training your heart to work harder under the conditions you are putting it under and thus its adapting to those pressures. it may also be your weight, as smoking obviously helps you lose weight and therefore less baggage when you run means the further you go. for now you will only see positive effects but it will catch up to you later and it wont be worth it. quit now while your not dieing of cancer or lung disease, please!
That doesn-t make any sense. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for your respiratory system. How important is -running far- to you? Is it worth risking cancer?
WHen I use to smoke I could run a far way then I quit smoking and couldnt run as far and now ive started? -

Whats a good way to quit smoking? -

I have been smoking for about 4yrs on and off until recently for the last 1.5yrs. I know the facts. But how do I quit that won-t have me go through much withdrawal? I know I will continue to crave for nicotine. What do you know that have worked to help people quit smoking?

-Thanks
cold turkey. drink plenty of fluids. not coffee or beer. walk alot and breathe as deeply as possible every time you want a smoke. Take about 5 to 6 slow deep breaths and hold them, then slowly let each out. In five days you are over the worst. Then stay away from those that continue the habit. Chew gum if you must put something in your mouth but realize that you and you alone are the one holding the filthy smoke up to your lungs. Be strong.
God Speed and be free.
Outrider
Nicotine patches.,
Nic. Gum,
The pic thing,
Counceling,
eat a fag then when you realize what you are puttnig into your self you will stop

or the cheap way of smoking is to put some tar, zinc ect.. in a cat exhaust and breath it in...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine_gu…

or a patch
my dad used them to help him quit.
You just do it ....... None of that -weening off- bs, just throw your cigs away and never go back. All you need is will power.
There is a laser procedure that is effective....not sure if they offer it where you live. Cinnamon candy also.
Try the Allan Carr-s Easyway method. my friend did it and quit taht day.

Good luck!
Keep a 8.5 x 11 color picture of a screwed up lung in your pocket. look at it when you want to smoke
why dont u start smoking a lighter cig then kepp going untill ur on the lightest cig then start chewing gum
you should drink coffee every time you think about it my be work for you .

What a good way to quit smoking cigs i am up to smoking a pack a day? -

I am ready to quit, I have some things going on in my life and my nerves are not under control, I am ready what do i do about the urges
nicotine gum? i also heard of a smoking aid with something that looks like cigarettes, and they have nicotine inside, but no smoke. they have less and less dosages so you can eventually ween yourself off.. and if your mouth still needs something to do after officially quitting and being done with the fake cigarettes, chew gum...
Well I quit smoking a long time ago. I threw all my cigarettes out on a Friday afternoon and stayed in bed all weekend. Whenever I wanted a cigarette I took a nap instead. By the time monday rolled around I was over the withdrawal symptoms.

After that I would get an occasional yen for a smoke, and I would deal with that by telling myself -no- and finding something else to do.

It-s really just a matter of whether you are capable of controlling your own habits or not. If you don-t have the basic self control for that, forget it you-ll probably smoke yourself to death no matter what.

I like to compare people like that to stupid dogs who simply cannot stop eating whatever-s put in front of them, even to the point of gorging themselves to death.

That way I can feel smugly superior.
Visit a lung cancer center and see first hand what smoking can do to you. I know life is short and for that reason you don-t want to raise your chances of dying a relatively slow painful death.
I tell you what. I-m a smoker and have been most of my life. Anyone who says it-s easy to quit, kudos to them because it-s the hardest thing in the world!!! I-ve tried it so many times I can-t even count :)

But what I caaannn say is the time I quit the LONGEST and what helped is this...

1) It-s good to know you-re ready because if you AREN-T ready, you won-t stay a non-smoker. You WILL go back. (I know that from personal experience.

2) I took up reading books. I read and read and read and read.... that took up so much of the mental struggle of the addiction. REALLY got me over the hump of it. (Now, however, I smoke AND read haha. Two of my favorite past-times!)

3) I took up chewing gum. That DOES help the oral fixation.

If you don-t do those, just find something that will occupy your mind and oral. Chew on a straw, something. I knew someone who bought a couple bags of blow pops and that helped him quit. Take up a hobby that will take up your time. Idol hands... ya know?

Good luck and I really hope you quit!
hi my husband is a heavy smoker too, i think support from people around you helps most. try also going to the doctor and ask some help.
life-s to short to give a **** just keep smoking we all die adventually so why not have fun while your here
There is a shot you can get in the two glands in your neck. Everyone i know that had it done quit cold turkey. I think it cost around 500.00 though. Dont bother with getting hypnotized, i tried that and it was just plain ridiculous.
Glad you have the willing mindset. For about the cost of a carton this program claims to help people stop very fast:

If you have quit smoking cigarettes and/or quit drinking alcohol , How did you do it ?...!!!? -

I plan on getting pregnant :-)
No joke... I-m not to worried about the affect of alcohol on my body, but I would never jeopardize a baby-s health by drinking while pregnant. I plan not to drink again, because I think to be a good mother, I should be fully sober and able to handle any situation with the child.
Sorry, I know it won-t work for you though! Good luck quitting!
Never was much of a drinker but I smoked for 30 years.
May 14th will be one year since I quit smoking! I used Chantix for 2 weeks and have NOT smoked after the first week! It worked for me and my hubby ~ he-s on 6 months and quit the same way.

Quit smoking hypnotist in Southern Westchester County, NY? -

Quit smoking hypnotist in Southern Westchester County, NY? -

Hi,
can-t do it on my own, call me weak, whatever
does anyone know of a hypnotist preferably South of White Plains?
Pretty tough search to do, but I finally succeeded...

I tried zip code 10701 (I picked it at random from your area) and came up with the following list:

http://local.yahoo.com/results?p=hypnoti…

After you bring up the list, substitute your preferred zip code for the zip code at the end of the URL and you should get some results close to your location.

Good luck. I quit cold turkey on September 10, 1999 after smoking for 27 years. Of course, I truly decided I was ready, which is a very hard thing to do.

A question for all you people whove quit smoking? -

A question for all you people whove quit smoking? -

what kind of medication/treatment worked for you and also how many tries did it take you to quit?
It took me (3) different tries years apart.
I have had many people tell me to just quit cold turkey. (Easier said than done!) There are more additives in tobacco now than there were years ago when a lot of people did quit cold turkey.
I tried the over-the-counter-patches the first time and DID NOT smoke -with- the patches- I landed in the emergency room almost over-dosed on the nicotene! And was only using the 2mg the whole time (which was suppose to be the last and lowest dosage of the patch).
The second time I tried the newer Rx called Chantix. It did not work for me, but I had not fully made my mind up that I really wanted to quit at that time. It has worked well for a lot of others I know.
The third time I went with the -Final Smoke- package of all natural ingredients with No tobacco or nicotene. I wanted to quit and stayed with it and IT DID WORK. I ordered mine off the TV. But I think you can go to :

http://www.finalsmoke.com

to get it. It is also safe to take along with other medications (although it does give a warning to check with your doctor first). Some people who are diabetic - such have more major health problems do need to check with their doctor first.
This worked really good for helping me to quit and it is all natural. It helps with cravings, side effects, dizziness, nausea and other side effects with quitting smoking.
I guess I-m one of the rare few that quit -cold turkey- and stuck to it. It-s been almost 5 years now since I-ve had a smoke. ~ You can do anything you set your mind to! Good luck!
Why smoke it when you can drink it.. I am now an alcoholic.
Chew sugarless gum............it helps keep your mind off it. Brush your teeth often, it makes your mouth feel fresh, and remind you of how nasty the taste of smoking is. One thing to avoid is replacing smoking with overeating. I gained a lot of weight the first time I quit because I was constantly eating to keep me mind off smoking.
You have to just quit cold turkey. Not till the end of a pack or after a specific event, just realize the facts, and they are:

1) Smoking is very unhealthy and can kill you

2) It is expensive. You would save a lot of maony by not smoking.

3) It is a turn off for a lot of people, so by smoking you are decreasing your value a little bit.

4) It really doen-t even do that much for you (if you are talking about cigarettes, right?). Doesn-t really get you high or make you feel better.

Hope this helps. It is tough to quit smoking especially if you get stressed out and just say F it, I need to get some smokes. Try to chew gum instead (regular gum) or do something healthy.
it took God dear. no medicine or program helped. i had to replace on addictive habit with another. i got into fitness. working out religiously.
it took me about 3 months, i kept a picture of Jesus ( the brown tinted kind) out in the open so i could look at it and pray to it. I bought lots of red licorice and kept eating it and taking lecithin, vitamin Bcomplex, and multivitamins if needed you could take valerian once in a while, i didn-t know about it back then.i think i ate sunflower seeds too.give yrself a pat on the back for asking.
i am a smoker for 5 years...not just a smoker but a chain smoker...(12-15 packs a day)...then suddenly i realized that i-m already abusing my body....my lungs in particular...so i tried to research on how to quit smoking..the fastest way....

i read a lot of articles...blogs...forum about smoking....i copy it all and i carefully study what really makes them stop from smoking...its not the medicine...its not any treatment or therapy...

what i found out is that -DISCIPLINE- is the most important to stop smoking....this is the most common principle to stop smoking....

i already stop smoking for 3 years now and no medicine nor therapy cure me....it-s just the word -discipline- that makes my bad habit to stop...

i think that it...hope you try it...coz it works on me...
When I quit smoking 20 years ago from 3 packs a day, I started running 3 miles a day. There-s nothing like making your lungs work hard to realize what the cigarettes have been doing. Also, I told myself that I could have a cigarette anytime I wanted one, I just didn-t want one right now. Four years later, I tallied up all the money I-d saved and bought myself a diamond ring. Good luck. You can do it. By the way, I didn-t use anything but my mind, but it-s fine if you want to use the gum. I wouldn-t use that new medication Chantix though. It-s causing problems for some people.
I quit cold-turkey-13 yrs. ago. Just quit, just do it, it will be the smartest thing you will ever do. Just think about how gross it makes your hair and clothes and breath smell, and how much you hate coughing up
nasty pleghm. Think about how you don-t want to die of lung cancer-my aunt died that way-from smoking. I know it took me several tries to quit-but now-I would NEVER ever start smoking again-I think it-s the nastiest smelliest habit!
Chantix is a miracle :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Gums and Patches did nothing for me.

I have to have surgery in a week. I am supposed to quit smoking. I need some helpful hints. I cannot afford patches and hypnosis. I am not a cold turkey kind of person. If I was, I would have quit a long time ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
lots of chocolate and chips and candy and gum and make yourself really busy all the time so u allways have something else in your hands other than a cigarette...if u dont know what to do make out, have sex, whatever will keep u busy :)
SUNFLOWER SEEDS- BY THE TONS... keeps your hands busy.. and always cracking the shells.. i know to late to answer .. but much better healthier than chocolate - junk food.... worked for me!!

I quit going on 2 months ago.

While you mention you can-t afford the patch, that is what I used. I still have part of my first box left, as I really only needed them the first few days.

take a look at the drug stores, they-ll run a $5 off on the package, and sometimes a rebate in tandem.

While the initial cost is high, when you think about it, if you smoke a pack a day, the patch is cheaper than two weeks of smoking.

It-s really a mindset, decide that you-re a non smoker, if you can do the patch... it will really help those first few days.. after that, I relied on jolly ranchers for the craving, water, fruit, walking and such.

My roommate is a smoker, a lot of friends are, and I work on a construction site where there are smokers... so in reality, my -setting- for quitting smoking is pretty bad.. in the two months, I-ve had maybe 4 cigs total.

Good luck
Not really. I-ve only smoked 3 cigarettes in my life and the last one was a very long time ago. I don-t think I every Officially started. Now, I -m allergic to the smoke.
You should check out the American Lungt Association-s online support program, Freedom From Smoking.

How long have you known you were having surgery? The best best method probably for anyone, is the sssslloooww method. I started to cut down in October of last year. I had my last cigarette 1 month ago. In your case, think about your health....if you don-t have that, what do you have? A very limited life. You don-t want that. Quit now, have one last cig and throw them away and focus on your health.

I smoked for over 40 years, having quit and gone back several times. I finally tried something new and have been smoke-free for about a year. This is what I did: whenever I wanted a cigarette, I-d smoke half of one. I did that for a couple of weeks, then I-d just take about four or five puffs, only smoking every other time I wanted a cigarette. I did that for a couple of weeks until I was down to 2 drags on a cigarette, maybe 4 times a day. Then, I decided that when that pack ran out, I-d buy no more.
Quitting cold turkey is just about as effective as quitting heroin cold turkey. Your body is just as addicted to nicotine and you have to wean yourself off it, like heroin addicts do with methadone. If you quit cold turkey, the craving is huge, while weaning yourself off of it, there is no craving left and your body is accustomed to being without it. Good Luck, my friend!
Loose your breath.
Smoking patches.

hello turdface. I think the best way is to just stop.
convince your mind to stop. but don-t become a druggy.....
and don-t stick your head in a pile of turd...please....don-t, that-s gross.
There is no really -best- way, whichever works for you does it. How I did it, after chain-smoking for 35 years, was to use a kind of self-hypnosis, -I love to smoke but right now I have to make a choice: either continue or get ready for an oxygen tank because I can-t continue to smoke. I may in the future, but for now, I can-t!- It was kind of a mantra I told myself repeatedly...........also, for the first two or three weeks, I was careful to not drink coffee because that was a trigger..............and as soon as I quit smoking, no more alcohol of any kind...not even a sip of beer. It has been now about twenty years since I quit but if I took a beer, I would go right to the store and buy some cigarettes. Pathetic? Yes, but it is doable..........depends on you.
Like I did, throw them in the fire/bin and don-t buy any more. That was 45 years ago, but I still reach out for them and how I sniff at those cigars at Christmas. It-s will power.
