Has anyone managed to quit smoking? -

have you managed to quit without using patches, gum etc? I have tried patches but cant use the stronger ones as they give me migraine the lower ones are not really strong enough, the gum tastes foul.im thinking of going cold turkey AGAIN! has anyone any tips?
I went cold turkey about six years ago. I had some mild panick attacks for about a year, however i am not sure if that was related or if other situations were driving that. But it is HARD!!!!! to quit smoking you really have to want to. Watch your snacking too because you could gain some weight weather you want to or not. For the most part i am over smoking but every once in a while i will crave one for about 30 sec. then its gone. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
I promised my wife I would quit smoking cigs. I quit on dec 3,2006. Its hard but not impossible.
I quit cold turkey - it was tough but just talk to yourself. I imagined the consequences if i didn-t quit. GOOD LUCK
My finace quit when he found out i was pregnant, mainly becausei made him, it was either that of a life time of nagging Lol
Gl and i have faith you can do it ! Xxx
Cold turkey is the best way because as long as you keep pumping nicotine into your body it will still want it and proplong the craving, I tried the patches and the lozenges but the one that worked was cold turkey I smoked for 12 yrs and quit cold turkey the first week really sux you cant concentrate, grumpy, hungry, cravings are insane, and you dont know what to do in certain situations, such as driving, but get some jolly ranchers and some coffee stiring straws get the jolly rancher to suck on and the straw to chew the hell out of, also work out do cardio get the natural endporphines pumping. Its kinda cool when your heart rate drops when you are just sitting around, you can walk up the steps without gettng light headed at the top and you wake up in the morning not hacking up anything or freaking out cause you dont have any smokes. It took me a few times to quit like anyone I imagine, but I finally just got sick of feeling, smelling, and coughing up crap. And you will find that after a couple of weeks you will be turned off by being around smoke or at least I did. Anyway good luck in your endeavor.
Yep - I used Wellbutrin (Zyban) to quit with the patch, and actually came off of both 6 weeks early. Worked really well for me. Plus, there-s a new stop smoking med called Chantix that might help - my parents both used that, and they-ve been smoke free for 3 months now (after about 35-40 years of smoking, so that-s pretty darned good).
just go cold turkey, it-s the best way.
simple choice, quit or die
my wife and I
both did it as well as my son............so can you ..good luck
I have quit - hundreds of times. Most recently - December 31, 2006. I take a prescription called Chantix. So far - it is doing good. Lots of mints, but no cravings.
Start a mantra everytime you reach for a smoke. -I-ll die if I smoke this- or -I-ll go blind if I smoke this-......make up your own, and repeat it everytime, -I-ll get wrinkles- or -I-ll stain my teeth-
21 years ago.
will power.if your really want to quit you will .but if not keep smoking, smoke one for me too.6 months without a smoke and i feel good.
I quit cold turkey. Occasionally I miss it but I -ve given my self other goals that provide an incentive not to smoke. Start working out, go running. Doing other things to improve your health will make smoking less and less desirable as you see the drastic difference in how you feel. Good luck.
Realize that smoking not only is bad for you, it tastes bad and smells bad. It can also kill you. DEAD. that should be motivation enough.
I stopped at 3 in the afternoon and went to bed at 8 pm.

Prepare a pile of baby carrots and celery sticks in the fridge.
When the urge comes, suck on one.

Good lluck! I did it!
My husband stopped smoking 12 months ago. I am so proud of him because I know its hard to stop. Guilt got him to stop..he went cold turkey..for about 3 weeks he was soooooo grumpy but after that hurdle things got alot easier for him. The guilt was me..he began to smoke more and more until he was up to a pack to a pack and a half a day. When he came home from work the smell was triggering massive headaches in me and I finally told him I couldn-t take it anymore. He felt so guilty about it he just quit! Now I know that wouldn-t work for most people but you really have to find your motivation. What would motivate you to stop? Hope this advice helps. and Good Luck!!

If one is that determined to quit smoking, the only way I know is cold turkey. I say this because of all of the patches, pills, etc. that are on the market, usually contain nicotine and its only a band aid. Best of luck!!!
I quit once, 18 days cold turkey. I wasn-t working at the time so I didn-t have to deal with that. I ate candy, I read books, I told people don-t call us we-ll call you. Every time I use a nicotine aid I start smoking again. This is what worked best for me.
I just didn-t smoke anymore one day. I just had to think about how stupid it was. That was probably 12 years ago.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
well i quit smoking when i found out i was pregnant...but that may not be an option for you if your a guy....
well this may not be the most popular way or best way but i have heard and have known some people who find something in their live that is meaningful and use that as a reason to stop. like for instance a new bf or gf or like in my friends case his best friend died from lung cancer which made my friends rethink his nasty habbit. who knows finding that one thing to quit for just might work for you to.

Fiber one bars work great, also try lots of water and shredded wheat. If all else fails get some Colace at the store. Its not a laxative, but a stool softener to ease into bowel movements. Eat shredded wheat every single day to stay regular. Fairly simple solution. Good Luck
* Eat more potassium-rich foods. Potassium strengthens the colon walls and restarts peristaltic action that stimulates bowel movements. It removes the layers of mucus and dried faeces present on the colon walls. The best sources of potassium are prunes, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, kale, sesame, seeds, wheat germ, brewers yeast, pineapple and cauliflower.

* Aloe is an excellent laxative. It cleans your stomach and intestines properly. Besides aloe, you can take buckthorn, frangula and senna to treat constipation. But take these herbs carefully for a short time.

* Take psyllium and drink plenty of water. Since psyllium is full of soluble fiber, it is an excellent remedy for constipation.

Yes. Try Epsom Salts. Be careful to follow the directions on the label though. It really does work.

Here-s a link to find out about it:

I know when I get constipated,I take a couple fiber tablets, they work, pretty quick and you don-t feel like you are pooping out your insides, like when you take a laxative.
Go to wallgreens or a drug store and ask for the pills they reccomend for pregnant women. I think they are called ecolax they work really well.

You can also do an enema on him if he is desperate.
Raisin bran. Seriously. Also takes care of the oral fixation. Or you could try visiting this site to talk to others like your husband:

http://www.quitnet.com/

Natural Senna Laxative. It is a pill you can find at your local pharmacy or perhaps even a chain drug store. It is inexpensive and works!
Good for him !! I hope he never goes back to it! Tell him to try some Milk of Magnesia. Also, he needs to put more fiber into his diet like fresh fruits and veggies.
lots of prune juice
try sticking a stick up his ***

Good for you. Quitting cigarettes is a very healthy choice.

You don-t indicate how long you smoked. Obviously, the longer you smoke, the greater impact to your health. The good news it that once you quit smoking, your body can repair the damage done by the habit.

Take a deep breath. Congratulate yourself for being a non-smoker. As for worrying about asthma and allergies....best not to borrow trouble. Worry is hazardous to your health too. If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms that feel like asthma or allergies, get in to the doctor and get it checked out. If you are not having any symptoms, then let the worry go.
the answer is in the site in my sources

I know it-s very hard to quit smoking due to the nicotine addiction.
Mom tried for years to quit. She quit with hypnosis in the end and never looked back. Since addiction is something created in the mind, if you can get a hypnosis pack that deals with your addiction you-re all set.

The site below does mp3-s of hypnosis sessions. Basically just sit back, relax, listen to the session, and watch your addiction melt away effortlessly. I use them alot for my personal development stuff, and they-re excellent.

Hope that helps!
try what I am doing right now, go from however many you smoke a day, lets say you smoke a pack a day. So smoke a pack a day from Monday (whenever you want to start quitting) through until Sunday, then on Monday smoke 19 through until Sunday, then on Monday smoke 18 through Sunday, and just go down until the Monday you have none for the rest of your life, and also quit the habits that deal with smoking, like after you eat or while driving, just try doing something else or thinking about something else, its hard but ive been doing really well and im a heavy smoker. Hope this helps, good luck!
Depends on if your body and mind are addicted to just the nicotine or the nicotine - habit. For me it was both so I went with www.stopsmokingwithecigarettes.com Now I am slowly taking my body off the nicotine without any of the with drawls. I don-t have to worry about any of the negative side effects because there aren-t any. (no second hand smoke.) I also no longer have to worry about -where- I can have my next smoke because I use it when ever where ever I want. Cost is 1/2 the price of a pack of cigarettes. It-s amazingly easy to get to the next lower cartridge.
Well you could set a goal for yourself. Like say your only going smoke once a week, something similar like that. Or chew gum! It works. Another way (my grandma did it) she literally ate coffee. Pure ground Coffee- like Folgers. She says it works.

I quit smoking at the new year and now have a nasty, phlegmy cough- is this normal? -

I quit smoking at the new year and now have a nasty, phlegmy cough- is this normal? -

when you smoke you kill all the cilia in your throat which normally move and sway to push all the phlegm and crap up away from your lungs. Think of this as a good sign, they are starting to regain consiousness and push all the crap back where it came from.

Jan. 7, 2010 (in 1 year) : Your risk for heart disease is half that of a smoker-s.

Jan. 7, 2014 (in 5 years) : Your risk of having a stroke is the same as someone who doesn-t smoke.

Jan. 7, 2019 (in 10 years): Your risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a smoker-s. Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas also decreases.

Jan. 7, 2024 (in 15 years) : Your risk of heart disease is now the same as someone who doesn-t smoke.

Your doing great, keep going!!
I don-t know how long you have been smoking for, but it will be your lungs getting rid of all the gunk you have swallowed over the length of time you have been smoking.

My husband and I know of a lot more people in the same situation that have stopped smoking and cannot get rid of this nasty phlegmy cough, my husband stopped smoking 5 years ago and is now under the doctor for Emphysema due to the damage done to his lungs from smoking.

Another friend who stopped smoking had the same problem but never went to the doctors about it, could not take the coughing and feeling ill anymore and went back to smoking and she is now fit and well. But who knows for how long, but she said she was willing to take the chance as her life was not worth living because of the way she felt when she stopped smoking.

My husband is so sick of being breathless, coughing and bringing up nasty stuff that he even contemplated smoking again, up to now he hasn-t but he is getting desperate as before he stopped smoking he was fit and well and once he stopped his health went down hill.

We honestly don-t know what is best, everyone says stop smoking for health reasons, who knows if he had never smoked he might have been ok now or if he had carried on smoking he might have been dead now. We will never know, all we do know is that our lives have been turned upside down now due to smoking as he cannot go out in cold weather or walk uphill, we have to plan our days out or see what the weather forecast is before we do anything.

If you have not been smoking for long you should be able to get rid of all the gunk without any after effects I truly hope you can.
Yes - that will last for ages - indeed, be prepared for it to get worse until all the shite you-ve been pumping into your lungs has gone and then suddenly after quite a few months you-ll realise that you-re not coughing your guts up every morning. I know what I-m talking about - I used to smoke 100+ a DAY then stopped dead before I dropped dead !
Yep, your coughing up the fruit of your indulgence, nice? tasty? Stick it out, And remember, the cravings will get easier.
Yep. Expect flu like symtoms etc too.... ur just releasing toxins - stuff... by giving up, you are already increasing your life expectancy.

Remember cravings come in 3-s. You-ll get them every 3 hours - they last for 3 mins (apparently!)
You could have a non related infection, but I would say it is the little cilia growing back and working their magic to bring about healthy lungs.
all that rubbish thats came off the smoking is now coming back up . keep it up and you can have a healthy chest .. i quit 5 months ago
Yes it`s normal, getting rid of the rubbish....
Yes, they-re getting rid of all that nasty stuff you-ve been forcing on them.
Yes, Its normal - Will clear after a while.
probably
no, it-s not normal... i suggest you start smoking again -til the cough clears up

I want to quit and I could quit if my boy friend would stop smoking around me I think....What realy works when trying to quit.....? I did quit for about 2 months....but I caught him smoking and then I lit one and well ya get the pic...
To quit the cancer sticks a Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking- can help you.
I used the patch to quit. It-s the hardest thing I ever had to do but it-s worth it. If your boyfriend can-t quit right now, tell him that he cannot smoke around you. He should be able to respect that.
Just because he is smoking, don-t fall back into it.
It-s so difficult and I feel your pain.

Good luck girl!
Greetings. And congrats on your decision to quit. I started a yahoo group when I quit (8 months now) with extensve files, inks, news etc. attached that can answer ANY question you might have about smoking and quitting. Feel free to have a look and..Hang In There...............R

You can quit even though your boyfriend smokes. Much more difficult, but can be done.
You need psychological support, and he needs some too - you have to make it cleat that he can-t smoke next to you.

Here is some advice:

there was a stephen king novel about a man who wanted to stop smoking and for this reason he joined a club..and for everytime he smokes they cut a finger of his..so you can atten to that kind of an organization
I starred this question to keep track of the answer. I also smoke and I have not been able to quit.
I hope you get a good answer. Good Luck.

I was smoking for 20 yrs and now I-m taking the patch called Nicocure. It-s some herbal patch. Anyways... I-ve managed to cut down to 6 cigeretttes.but I just cant kick the habit totally. Are there some good methods that might work and what worked for you?
I wish I knew the answer to this Audrey but I would like to know more about this patch, Nicocure. How did you find out about it and where can it be purchased??
I tried Nicocure from
http://sexhealthdiet.com
and I don-t think it stopped my smoking but it did help in the cravings. It was helpful in the whole plan. It is just plain hard but every little thing helps. It was not that easy to start so it is not going to be easy to quit smoking.

Places where you don-t smoke, stay there longer.
Places where you do smoke try to avoid them as much as possible.
I quit this way, and make myself cut down a little at a time till I was smoking 3 cigarettes a day, then I quit all together.
good luck! there are some other patches available. excersise helps and keeping busy try not to stand with people who are smoking it will just make the urge bigger.
ive once asked for quiting smoke with hypnotism, it seems that it works for real
week 1: cut down your habit to half (you may tremble sometimes, even salivate when you see one, fever is normal, dizziness and others, but if youre really decided, youll make it through,)
week 2: cut it down to another half
week 3: den another
week 4: den totally cut it all. its your determination and dedication that wuold remove it, believe me.
It is not diffucult. I have done it so many times. Try to increase the gap of timing bet. two cigarettes, within one month you will overcome smoking. This is my advice which I cannot follow. Ha Ha ha.....
well look at the facts first: smoking is addictive, more than 400,000 people died each year in the us, smoking doesnt just hurt you but it hurts others by secondhand smoke, secondhand smoke increase the chances of earing problems (in child), if you do quit you can taste food and drinks a lot better and more facts at

JUST LOVE A BOY WHO KISS U ALLTHE TIME AND NEVER THINK ABOUT U SMOKING........MAY BE THIS BOY IS ME...CAN I TREAT U?
After smoking for 22 yrs. ... I just -cold turkeyed- one day! Perhaps my addiction was harder to quit than a -heavy- smoker:
I smoked 5 ciggs. a day(Can-t hurt much...right??) Sorry if that-s not much help!!
I had been a heavy smoker and drinker for past 30 years but I managed to kick the habits in just one go.

I tried withdrawal method, minimising, etc. Nothing works.

ONLY WILLPOWER WORKS.

Have will, you can stop.
Dear Audrey,

I am a chain smoker too. Used to smoke about 12 cigrattes /day, now slowly reduced to 6. See when ever you feel like smoking the best remedy is to start eating chewing gum. I have noticed the continous movement of our mouth and repeated intake of saliva throgh eating chewing gums have reduced the liking towards smoke.

Try it it will work. I can be contacted at: sund1234@yahoo.com

How do i get the motivation to quit smoking and get back into the gym after not exercising for one year -

i want to lose about 10 kg in 6 months any suggestions on diet and exercise
Find something that inspires you. Getting healthy sometimes isn-t enough to get someone pumped up in the gym environment. Bring your music and listen to something that gets you excited! You need to keep looking forward to the benefits you-ll get out of quitting and joining the gym.

Life will be so much better for you when you-re healthy!
Put your cigarettes next your tracksuit and trainers.

Set a recurring alarm on your cell-phone calendar to play something motivational like eye of the tiger. Set it for the time you usually get home from work.

Imagine yourself as you expect to be after successfully training for 6 months.

Keep a record of your activity and if you fall off the wagon, don-t worry, you will feel differently in an hour or two.
I wish I knew!

I need to do the same thing, but can-t get the motivation!

Hope you succeed!
You just do it.

I am making a pursausive speech on quitting smoking, based around the fact that i quit with hypnosis. ideas? -

using your own experience can motivate people BUT hypnosis did not help me or several people i know. there is a new drug out there called CHANTEX and has worked for every one i have spoken to, including me.it is a blocker that tells your brain you don-t want to smoke untill you can get it out of your system and make new habits. i have been on it for 6 weeks and don-t miss them at all. i have not smoked for a week now.my husband smoked 2 packs a day and he quit in just 2 weeks!!! it can be expensive....some ins. co. will cover it and the Lilly co. that makes it Will give it to you very cheap if you are in a lower income class.
I would bet it was not your first attempt, I would tell then what was done during the session, I would list the illnesses that are caused by smoking and the negatives even if you don-t die from it, such as shortness of breath, dental problems, stress that hypnosis is one of the more painless ways to quit
GOOD FOR U BRAVO

Any wisdom amp; verbal support on helping me to quit smoking today? -

I have decide to quit smoking today. I have smoked a total of 25 years out of my 54 years on this planet. I once quit for 9 years and then started again. I smoke 1 to 1.5 packs a day. I am in good health, but know that smoking is ruining my health. Any experience, strenght and wisdom from x smokers would be helpful.
Big Ed, Look at the people carrying those oxygen machines with them wherever they go, with the oxygen tubes in their noses and ask yourself if you EVER really want to live like that....Also, there are others who have to live with tracheotomies and use the vibrating instrument to even speak....do you want to live like that? When my uncle died of lung cancer from smoking, he literally was spitting up bits of his lungs. I seriously suggest looking at pics from web sites of actual smokers- lungs. The reality will grab you....it did me and this is how I quit. Bless you in your efforts. You did it once you can do it again!!! It took me three tries but, all I have to do is bring up those images to mind and I can say NO.
I JUST quit and there is NO easy way. I quit on ash Wednesday, for lent. It has been hard but it made me feel so good when my Grand-daughter told me Grandma you dont stink anymore, and i noticed how much people who smoke STINK, and i feel so much better.I went cold turkey , and i am around smokers for a good portion of the day and it is very hard, and my mouth waters when i smell itBUT i make myself strong and think....eeeewwww they are STINKY!...lol, sorry but i know this isnt helping you *maybe* but nothing about quitting is easy. I can breathe lots better and sleep lots better, and dont get up with a ashy tasting mouth in the morning, no coughing...etc...etc. I am a better person, and i LOVE life to much to kill it...slowly, especially my own.
I just recently spent time helping my sister take care of her husband who was dying from cancer due to smoking. He like you averaged smoking that same amount. He actually was diagnosed with it last year at this time. We buried him Dec 2, he died Nov 27. He left behind a 12 year old son and a 14 year old son. Along with my sister.
I loved the man like a brother. We had many fun times together as families up at Stike, sturgeon fishing and camping. There is a BIG hole in our family now along with an ache in our hearts. He was only 58.

The night before he died, it was the Thanksgiving Holiday so Hospice was not prepared to deal with certain issues that we were faced with. Unfortunatly the patches for pain were not working. He had not been very coherant that day and by the night was not doing great. Well we knew that if we didn-t get some pain pills in him the pain was going to make the situation worse so she said that she would let him smoke a cigerette right there in the bed. Mind you he smoked till the very end but that day he hadn-t. So he said, -Let-s do it- meaning take the pain pills so he could have a smoke. We helped him to sit up and spent the next 10 min. trying to get enough spit and water in his mouth in order for him to be able to swallow them. I was so scared that we were going to choke him to death from the pills. Once finished she got a cig. for him and lit it and stuck it in his mouth so he could have it, but what she had done was break it off so there wasn-t even a half of one. Anyway when he went to take it out of his mouth he realized what she had done and said, -YOU PIECE OF ****(crap), GIVE ME A WHOLE ONE!- he proceeded to let her know it was his last and she-d better give him what he wanted. It was funny in away as we laughed because he had almost burn his fingers, he didn-t even finish it but he had to have a whole one. Those were his last words by the way. He layed back down after that, the next morning I knew he was close because he had soiled himself and was no longer coherent. That night surrounded by his wife and boys he passed on to the other side. It was a valient fight but the cancer just wouldn-t give the fight up. The devistation to my sister and her boys has been very hard. I am sure that you have loved ones that would be devistated by you loss. I don-t know how to tell you to go about stopping, I don-t understand nor have experienced that addiction, so I can-t help you there. What I can tell you is that had he not of been a smoker the doctors and people might of treated him alittle better. They misdiagnoised the cancer as phynophia for over a year when in fact had they of taken the time to really check him out they would of realized that it was in deed cancer.
The sooner you stop the better your chances are for avoiding this diesease. I wish you the best and hope that you are able to conquer your addiction.
i knew a lot of stubborn smokers who were in the death bed and said why was i so stubborn i wish i didn-t smoke
i guess scare tatic doesn-t work well otherwise everyone would quit
the easiest way is to remember you control your body and mind not the cigarette company who has been stealing all your hard earned money selling you a product which is highly addictive
if you want to stop smoking throw all your cigarettes in the garbage don-t buy anymore i am making it sound easy i know it is tough take control of yourself and quit
good luck even know luck has nothing to do with it
it is all you i don-t even know you but i know you can do it
once u put your mind to it, quitting should be easy. you can pray for extra support.
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quite smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK!
think of the nice car the money could buy in a few years
Thnik that if you don-t quit smoking, you-ll die sooner!
I-m not a smoker or even an ex-smoker, but I know your health insurance will go down. It-s also nice that when you don-t smoke, you won-t get stuck with high prices and tax for those packs.
well i quit 3 times, once at 17 for about 2 months and then the weakness came back, too young to stop it, then with my first pregnancy i quit for 18 months and then with the second child i quit for 18 months, sorry to say but i am still smoking, however, i plan on quitting in August 2008, my oldest will be 7 then and i told her i would quit for her b-day, the reason i feel i can do it at that time is b/c both of my children will be in school and my stress level will be down and i plan on starting my career in real estate and i DO NOT want to smell like a cigarette in that career and i want the career more than the cigarette and that will keep my time occupied and busy, it will be much easier to quit than now while i stay at home and pull my hair out everyday with kids. So try the patches they do work, that-s how i quit at 17 though too weak then, but i do think they can help you, especially since you are going to try and want to try, no it-s never easy to quit and stay that way, but for 9 years you quit that is real good, try to remember back at that time and recall no coughing and easier breathing, focus on all the bad of smoking and all the good of not and GOOD LUCK
Remember that a craving only lasts about 5-15 minutes so when you have that craving drink a bottle of water, brush your teeth, practice breathing exercises, think about your lungs clearing, say a prayer, call a friend, make yourself busy or just push through it. For the next week keep yourself busy doing things where you wouldn-t be able to smoke anyway. If you have been smoking as long as you say you probably have a lot of routines where you smoke without thinking about it. i.e. If you go outside in the morning for a smoke go outside but drink a cup of coffee or pull some weeds. After you eat a meal instead of smoking brush your teeth. When you are driving drink a bottle of water or keep some twizzlers or red vines around. Red vines are great because they are kind of hard and have a hole through the middle like a straw so you can suck on them or even hold one like a cigarette. A friend of mine used actual straws just to staisfy the oral fixation. You could also try munching on carrots or celery sticks. Also, if you don-t already, start an exercise routine. Switch your focus from smoking to making yourself healthy and strong. After the first week it will get easier. After 28 days it will be completely out of your system and then you just have to deal with the mental addiciton. That will get easier and easier as you realize how much better you feel. You will sleep better, wake up without a nasty cough, not feel like you have to miss out on certain things because you are afraid you won-t be able to smoke, you will have more energy, smell better and look better. I think one of the hardest parts is feeling like you won-t be the same person if you don-t smoke. You will be the same person though - just healthier. Good Luck!!!
first of all GET PATCHES! they really help, when you feel like lighting up go for a run or some other exercise and keep your exercise gear in a handy place so youre ready to go, if youve got a printer then get some pics off the net of smoking related autopsies, its a bit grim but it focuses your mind, throw away all your old packets, lighters, any related paraphernalia and finally, dont drink or go out for a week, find something else to do like some diy or housework, after a week you should be over the worst of it, good luck
Chew gum. Blow Pops are the best. and pray. when today is over you have increased your life by 10 years. what are you gonna do ? have a new career ? go to school? go on a trip around the world!!! yes definately go on the trip. Good Luck. I will keep you in my prayers.
You have lived a good and healthy life so far.

You may live till 90 in a healthy shape, you are you reducing it ot 70 only?

quit smoking.
Use my dog poo method, every Time you get the urge visualise the end dipped in dog poo and imagine the smell as it gets closer and closer. It worked for me.
I-ll tell you what gives me strength to keep away from it. Firstly, it-s about pride and willpower. I want to prove to myself and my friends (and girls i might like!), everyone basically, that i can do it. I use these relationships to keep myself from smoking. They will think nothing less of you if you go back to it, but just say to yourself that u must prove to them you can do it.

More important is probably proving it to yourself. But this is more tricky, because the mind, being cunning and incredibly smart, will come up with numerous excuses and lies to avoid you seeing yourself as being a failure.

Then...well, think about it. Look at it! You are being controlled by this little piece of paper, wrapped around some tobacco. Your whole body, the whole of you, body and soul, your whole world (existensialism) is at the mercy of this little bastard, that little ****. THAT IS JUST SAD, and really scary! So, i think of it that way, get angry, and try and use that to give up.

What else? You smell better, you can run faster, and for longer (away from danger, the law, or towards the woman of your life!! whatever works for you!), you can have sex for longer, your knob will grow longer and thicker, you will be able to do more things each day, since you will have more energy, and all your friends will not have to see you in hospital chocking in your own fluids in years to come...

Just some of the things i think about, to remain a quitter!
I think you know all of these things already, you just want to hear them from someone else. As we all do.
I help people with this a lot. Seek out an Acupuncturist who does Auricular therapy for Addiction Control. It works 70-80% of the time. Also get Lobelia Tincutre from a health food store. It is a natural alternative to nicotine gums that works great in helping to curb the cravings.
Quiting smoking is tough but try substitute the craving with something healthy like fruit or drinking a glass of water.
or just try go cold turkey!

itl be hard but worth it!
Think that smoking is like licking a full ashtray. I have smoked 12 years out of my 26 years 1 pack a day. I quit one morning when i realised that my breath smelled like my full ashtray on my desk or worse. Nicotine patches helped a lot. I had fights with everybody around me, but they were supportive and now I-m happier than ever. Plus I save money for summer vacations on Mykonos.
Dear friend, I was a heavy smoker for about 7 years but once I found myself in a very bad mood. I was embarrassed all time because of the smoke smell and my mouth was always smelly. I decided to quit and I did it about 2 month ago. at first it was very hard to control myself but after a week or two it was not that hard. in that first period I used tranquilizers whenever temptation wanted to kill me. but now I am very pleased and its very exciting that I can run without asthma. I know you can make it, good luck.

Anyone ever use Smoke Away to quit smoking? -

A former co-worker used this a couple years ago after smoking for 25 years and she said it worked for her.

Anyone else use this? My boyfriend has been a long time smoker and he really needs to quit.

However, I just want to make sure people haven-t experienced any terrible side effects.
i used to smoke 3 packs of marlboro reds a day. i smoked 4 cigarettes on the way home from work one day and found my smoke away in the mail. I finished the last 3 cigarettes i had left and started the smoke away. I have never smoked since, for a while the smell of cigarette smoke even made me sick to my stomach. I dont know how it works but it does. The only catch is he has to want to quit and he has to use the smoke away correctly.
I saw one time that theres these lollipops that make you stop smoking you can get them at lyk CVS good luck ? melissa
Smoke Away Part One: Does It Work?

Kim Owens has smoked 25 years. She smoked two packs a day. She quit one time for four years and says she is ready to quit again.

Smoke Away Part One: Does It Work?

Want to quit smoking? How about in seven days! No kidding. And for good. That-s what the makers of the Smoke Away claim.

We gave her the Smoke Away to test. She had to take 64 herbal supplements for seven days to help calm her nerves and tobacco aids to help curb her cravings.

Here is Kim seven days later and says it-s been good...sort of. -Pain. Torture. Misery. But I dropped my blood pressure 20 points, I have put on three pounds. I have managed to clean the clothes off the treadmill and use it,- said Kim with a half smile in her face.

Kim reports that after seven days, she has felt absolutely nothing from the herbal supplements from the Smoke Away program. -The little homeopathic things under your tongue is just candy,- she said.

Kim says that after three days on the Smoke Away, her hopes of quitting for good didn-t look optimistic. -I-ve snuck some cigarettes. Ten or less in seven days. I went through my ashtray. It was a pitiful site,- she admitted.

In fact, since her debut last week, people have recognized her as the -lady who-s quit smoking.- Which she says made it hard for her to sneak around.

Last Friday, Kim said her cravings were strong. The medicine in Smoke Away just wasn-t helping. What did she do? She says she broke down and tried to buy a pack at the shop. -The guy opens the window and he sees me and starts laughing. And I-m thinking, he-s not laughing at me, I-m just self conscious,- said Kim.

She orders her cigarettes and she says the attendant gets them for her. -He holds them up against the window and says -are these them?- And I said yes, those are it. I need them! He starts laughing again,- she told the story.

Kim said nevermind and drove away and never got those cigarettes.

So perhaps the Smoke Away doesn-t work to help you stop smoking, but maybe the power of television does?

Kim says that she will continue to stop smoking. She says one week in not enough time for any one to quit.

Also, the Smoke Away cost us $60. It guaranteed it would help you stop smoking in 7 days for good. It did not work at all!
for the 1st wk he/she me be irritable ask or consult a doctor to for the cigaret patch for the nicotine addiction and when he is to last patch ask to go to the gym he will gain a little weight. been there done that but unfortunately I am still smoking due to my job. it-s very stressfull
Smoke Away doesn-t have any harmful side effects and it does work.
Nicotine is the #1 cause of illness, lost time from work, disability, - death in the US. It leads to 500 000 deaths YEARLY which is the # of soldiers lost in the entire 20th century. If any intervention worked it would be front page news and you would not need to ask this question. That being said any smoking cessation intervention helps as it begins with the person stating their desire to quit. 1 year later however no more people quit by Smoke Away than just stopping although there are no known health risks.
Whenever I quit smoking witch can happen a couple of times a year I use dip, Skoal stairght, any time I am at work and all my firends are firign up and I get the usual urge to bum one or you have that idiot *** whole who always offers you a ciggerette even though your trying to quit I through in a dip and all my cravings are no more, then about a week after I have quit smoking I quit dipping cause I find it easier to quit dipping than smoking, if you wonder why I start smoking somtimes I cant really tell you other than last time it was from high stress. But I have mangeged not to keep the habit up with dip...hope this helps,

Has anyone used Chantix (varenicline tartrate) to quit smoking? -

Did it work?
Did you experience any of the side effects -In clinical trials, the most common adverse effects of Chantix were nausea, headache, vomiting, flatulence (gas), insomnia, abnormal dreams, and dysgeusia (change in taste perception), according to the FDA.-
How long did side effects last?
Would you recommend the use of Chantix to other smokers?
Yes, it worked. Yes, there are side effects, nausea and vivid dreams being the most common ones. I did have a couple more, but I quit, and it-s been 7 weeks that I am smokefree and 5 weeks since I stopped taking Chantix.

I blogged about my whole experience here:

Yes. I used it to quit after 35 yars of smoking and it worked. Nothing else really matters now does it?

I started a yahoo group when I quit (over 7 months ago) with extensive files, links, news etc. attached that can answer ANY question you might have about smoking and quitting. Feel free to have a look and...Hang in there.......R

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Sta…

I had zero side effects and stopped smoking after the 5th dose, although I continued to take it for 30 days just to be on the safe side and get the nicotine out of my body. It really is a miracle drug!
Chantix is an excellent way to quit smoking with few side effects. For more Chantix information, please click the following link:
http://www.121doc.com/champix.html?a_aid…

I am currently using Chantix, and have been quit for 8 weeks today! I had severe exhaustion, which was alleviated when I cut the dose back. I got nauseous if I took my morning pill without food. I get headaches if I don-t drink enough water. I was very gassy, but that has gotten better. The dreams have been fabulous, thanks for asking! Overall, the side effects have been mild, especially because this drug REALLY WORKS and I have been able to quit smoking while not trying to strangle anyone. I absopossilutely would, and have, recommend this drug to smokers.
I stopped smoking without using anything, it was tough to quit, with 3 other people smoking in my home while I was quiting. It-s been over 2 yrs now since I quit and I haven-t smoked a time since I quit!
I have been on this medication for 25 days now. I haven-t smoked yet. It isn-t as easy as they make it out to be; in fact I still want to smoke at times.

The side effects are strong, but I guess after smoking for 20 years they should be. The sleeping dreams and not sleeping are the worst. I eat all of the time.

After the two weeks - I started to want to move around like I use to. Before, that I was out of it and wondered if this was worth it.

The drug has a daily check in service. However, it doesn-t allow for questions and the answers are specific to your case. They keep sending you to the doctor for advice.. Who can afford that?

A word of caution.. When I cut my dose in half I feel better and don-t want to smoke. However, the makers of Chantix want you to keep taking the pills and paying out the money.

I am not sure that if I quite taking the pills I would feel better anyway.

Good luck
I used it and it worked beautifully!
I had no side effects and stopped smoking by about week 3. I have been smoke free since...about 8 months now...and would definately recommend it to others.

Good luck!
I experienced no side-effects. I quit with that med., and patches. I won-t say it was a breeze, but it wasn-t that bad either.

Peace

Is it possible to have larger erections after quitting smoking? -

Is it possible to have larger erections after quitting smoking? -

This is a serious question.
I quit smoking at New Years, cold turkey and successful.
My umm.. female partner... claims to have observed that I have larger erections after quitting smoking. It makes sense in a way due to the constriction of blood vessels and whatnot.
If anyone with more knowledge could elaborate, I would appreciate it.
It truly does not matter, because I am larger than average and quite happy. Still, I find this fascinating.
Yeah, I-m larger than average too... and it takes a lot of blood flow to fill up the big monsters like ours. Smoking can really hinder your cardio vascular system, and keep the big ones from getting fully inflated.
When you smoke the blood can-t flow around the body as easily as if you haven-t smoked.

Now that you don-t smoke, the blood circulation in your body is back to normal and the blood will easily flow in and make it a bit more bigger.

congratulations on quitting smoking.this should be another reason why people quit smoking.

Looks like you had a good year so far
you mean a -stiffer- erection (coz you might have a larger erection yet with a softer than sponge c**k).

It is possible if you stop scaring it with your cig (LOL)...just kidding...

That-s possible coz your blood vessels would be cleaner (and it-s blood that fills these things)
Yes, the substances in cigarettes smoke clog up the arteries. Cig smoking is a major contributor to erectile dysfunction. Most people know this.
It makes sense - quitting smoking will improve the blood flow, I-ve never heard of this happening, but I guess it must.
Well done for giving up - you-ll live longer, and have more time to enjoy your new - found length!
HMMM..................more encouragement, for ME to quit smoking!!!

THANKS, for the -food for thought- !!!
I dont think so
i have never heard of it
its a shame i dont smoke !! lol!!
never heard of it

What is the easiest way to help someone quit smoking? -

And yes..they want to quit
The same way nicorette helps you. Cut down by 1 cigarette every 2 days, eventually your body will not have a craving for nicotine and you will be free of smoking. (Tried and tested on myself, smoke free for 5 years)

Don-t bother with -Nicotine- replacements they-re too expensive.
If they really want to quit then they are already halfway there. The best thing you can do is give all the support that you can and help keep your friend in a positive frame of mind.

It is key to stay positive, don-t let them focus on the cravings. Remind him/her to keep the reasons why they want to quit circling through their head. This will keep spirit and motivation high. Cravings will ease as a result.

If he/she focuses on the negatives of quitting (eg cravings) then they are reinforcing a false belief that is too hard to quit.

There are no real negatives to quitting, only positives. The longer he/she has stayed smoke free the easier the quitting process becomes. If you can help your friend to believe they can quit, then they will.

Visit our site to join our inspirational 12 day e-course. You can also download our free book -36 Powerful Superfoods- to help fight weight gain and start mending damage caused by smoking. For more information and to post your opinion about the products you have tried, visit the following website.

Good Luck, I hope you help your friend to quit
This is how I got my girlfriend to quit I take one out the pack stick up my but then put it back in the pack. She got tied of guessing which one first She slowed downed from a pack a day to about 4 a day then quit.
By explaining him how the same is going to affect his body in medical terms and by showing him the quantum of poison he takes in through every puff.

How do I control my anxiety to try to quit smoking? -

How do I control my anxiety to try to quit smoking? -

I beleive I have some sort of anxiety disorder due to the fact that I get that weird feeling in my stomach and get nervous and/or scared of the future everyday. I always turn to smoking to fix it, I want to quit smoking NOW . Any advice for me to kick this and control my anxiety so I can be happy. I am a 27 yr old gay male!! Thanks for the answers!
I began smoking at the age of 15 and finally quit for good at the age of 57 (a year ago), when I was at a pack a day. Even tho- all the experts say you have to go cold turkey, I think that just increases the craving. This is how I did it. Everytime I wanted a cigarette, I only smoked half of it. So, I immediately cut my intake in half. After a few weeks of doing that (gives your body time to adjust to less nicotine), I would only take about 4 puffs, put it out and save it for the next craving. After a few weeks of that, I went to 2 puffs, then one puff (where one cigarette could last me a day or two). My body gradually got used to doing without the nicotine and I got to a point where I said, -when this pack is done, I-m not buying anymore-. That was a year ago. Recently, I stayed with my son, who smokes, and took a drag off his cigarette. I didn-t like the taste and it hurt my throat. If I can do it, you can do it, because I loved smoking!!!
There are many healthier ways to reduce stress.

One of them is my favorite one.

Cocoa rich chocolate.Cocoa contains natural substances that reduce stress and pain and create a feeling of pleasure in your brain and increase your brain activity. How long effects last depends on how much you consume.Only a few pieces of high cocoa chocolate reduces your pain, anxiety or stress for most if not all day.Lindt exellence is my recomendation. The best chocolate you can buy and affordable to most people. You can find it in any store with large selection of items. The applications of cocoa are very wide ranging from consuming it before a dentist appointment to reduce pain and fear from the drill. It is very effective.

After you try it you will never need to smoke again.
I think you-ve got two different issues here - smoking and anxiety. Honestly, you have to deal with them separately. As bad as smoking is, I-d not worry about that and focus on the anxiety first. If its really effecting your life, you should see your doctor. Otherwise think about taking up yoga and meditation, as well as making sure you get plenty of exercise and a healthy diet. There are lots of resources all over the net for ways to deal with anxiety.

You might even find that with a healthier body and mind, you-re naturally less inclined to smoke.
I would talk to your dr. about some kind of anxiety med. I quit smoking with this new cancer free option. It-s allot like smoking but completely safe and you can use it just about anywhere, you still get your nicotine and helps with your desire to smoke.
You may feel like you-re on a rollercoaster during the first couple of weeks after you quit smoking. You-ll have good days and you-ll have bad days. Whether you use a quit aid of some sort or go cold turkey, you’re going to feel a certain amount of withdrawal from nicotine. Some people have more trouble with the first week, and others with the second, but the good news is that for most quitters, the worst of physical withdrawal from nicotine is over within the first two weeks of smoking cessation.
Physically, your body will be reacting to the absence of not only nicotine, but all of the other chemicals in cigarette smoke that you-ve been inhaling 20 or more times a day for years. When the supply gets cut off, you can expect to feel the effects of that. Flu-like symptoms are common. The amount of discomfort you-ll experience depends in part on how well you take care of yourself during this phase. Follow the tips below to help you minimize the discomforts you-ll feel as a result of physcial and mental withdrawal from nicotine.

but here are some tips on how to quit:
Find some support.
Having others who are interested in your success is very important. The Smoking Cessation Forum at About.com is a thriving, active group of people who can give you the help and encouragement you need. Sign in as a guest to browse and read posts from other quitters, or register(free) to post messages of your own. Add some support to your quit smoking program.

Eat a well-balanced diet.
Treats are fine, but be careful not to go overboard with the wrong kinds of food right now. Your body is working hard to expel toxins during the withdrawal process, and that takes energy. Choose foods that will provide you with the high quality fuel you need. Avoid the empty calories of junk food.

Take a multi-vitamin.
Smoking depletes our bodies of nutrients. Give yourself a boost with the help of a multi-vitamin. This, combined with good diet will help you minimize the fatigue that can often occur during nicotine withdrawal.

Stock the fridge with healthy snacks.
Have small bags of bite size fresh veggies within easy reach. Celery and carrots sticks with low fat ranch dressing for dipping makes a good snack. Fresh fruit, such as pineapple chunks, berries, melon or other fruits in season will satisfy your sweet tooth if they-re clean and ready to eat when you-re looking for a snack. Good freezer treats include low fat fudgesicles and frozen grapes.

Get out for a walk.
A short walk every day – as little as 15 minutes even, can work wonders for you as you withdraw from nicotine. Walking reduces edginess and improves circulation. It also releases endorphins, the -feel good- hormone. So, when the urge to smoke strikes, head out for a walk around the block. You’ll come back refreshed and relaxed.

Get more sleep.
Early cessation is tiring. Your body is stressed and so is your mind. Allow more time to sleep if you need it. Don’t worry, the weariness won-t last. Your energy will return soon.

Drink water!
Water helps you flush residual toxins from smoking out of your body more quickly. It also works well as a craving buster. Drink water before you snack and you-ll eat less. Water is an important part of your diet! Keep yourself well-hydrated, and you-ll feel better in general. That will in turn help you manage withdrawal symptoms more easily.

Keep some supplies in your car.
If you spend a lot of time driving, have some items handy to help you pass the time more comfortably. Drink some of that water we just talked about while you-re driving. Keep a bottle or two in the car at all times. Also store a bag of hard candies and lollipops in your glovebox and have some straws or cinnamon sticks availabe to chew on.

Do some deep breathing.
Cravings usually hit fast and with force. They-re strongest at the start, and fade in intensity within 3 - 5 minutes. Don-t panic when you get a craving to smoke. Take a few moments to concentrate on your breathing. Close your eyes if possible and breathe in and out slowly. Let the craving wash over you like a wave while you focus on your breathing. The urge will pass and you’ll be left feeling stronger.

Turn your bathroom into a day spa.
Light some candles, and take a long hot bubble bath. Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure and follow with a facial. Pamper yourself!

Have a cup of tea.
Allow yourself a few minutes to relax with a cup of tea and honey. Choose herbal teas rather than those with caffiene. It-s an quick and easy way to rejuvenate yourself.

Reward yourself.
Come up with a list of small gifts that you can give yourself every day. Take a hot bath. Buy a new candle. Read a fun magazine. Enlist someone else in the family to cook dinner. Small daily rewards will boost your spirits and fortify your resolve to keep the quit.

Be patient and kind to yourself during the early days of smoking cessation. The rewards will outweigh the discomforts you-re going through. Nicot
I-m an X smoker, and I suffer from bouts of anxiety and depression.
Quitting smoking is not as easy as some non-smokers think it is.
What you need to do is get a nicortine replacement treatment. (I use nicorette gum, I find that-s the best for me.)
There are patches, gum, inhalers and little pills that you put under your tounge which desolve after a few minutes. But you also have to set a date when you feel you will be able to quit, even a time, and stick to it. You have to distinguish what behaviours and habits cause you to light up, eg. having a beer or wine, and then consciously put your mind into not lighting up but subtituting the cigerette for something else, either nicoratine replacement or something which is good for you like a glass of water.

Good luck and good health!

PS. Nicotine is not harmful but is the addictive part of smoking. It is all the other chemicals and tar etc. that you are inhaling into your lungs that is harmful and cancer causing!

First off, congratulations for WANTING to quit smoking!!

As far as answering, there are a lot of ways, and it also depends on how much you-ve been smoking. The best ways are slowly lowering your dose (takes a long time sometimes), or going cold turkey (which is faster, but harder). Either way, the last thing is making the decision to quit, so you-ll eventually have to deal with the withdrawal.

For the most part, when you deal with withdrawal, you-ll just have to tough it out, but there are some things that can help cleanse out the toxins and may help to minimize some of the effects of withdrawal...
Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it-s not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get).

All that being said, it-s likely that the symptoms should stop relatively shortly after your last smoke (it-s never as long as it feels like it is). Your neurotransmitters don-t take too terribly long to scream for something they are addicted to after you stop.
Another important thing to note is that no matter how bad it gets, taking more of the drug (and yes, nicotine is a drug) will only make the withdrawal last longer and will be harder on you in the long run. Good luck, and congrats again!

Getting some extra motivation and support from a hypnotherapist can be helpful. Find something physical to do as a replacement for smoking. Make sure you eat regularly through the day - and definitely eat breakfast because often the cravings you get are actually hunger pangs that were masked before by nicotine. That doesn-t mean you-ll put on weight, you-ll just be distributing your food more evenly through the day.
Hypnosis can help you deal with the cravings of having a cigarette. The most difficult part of quitting is finding something to do besides lighting up. Especially when being around friends or family who smoke.

Good luck
Homeopathic remedies can help but you would need to see a qualified Homeopath.
Fear is the key.
I used to smoke 200 cigarettes a day. I quit cold in 1967 and never smoked again.

gum, patch, or anything else, and why is it the best. any sources are bonus points, and thumbs up or ya! most sources and best explanation gets best answer
You are your best product. I smoked for 15 years before i quit. It takes a made up mind. You can use patches and all that other money taking junk. But it still takes a made up mind. Do like i did, Skip the patches and gum and make up you mind that this is what you want to do and do it. Once you do that you will break the habit forever.
Sorry to say that nothing is going to work unless you really want to stop. Don-t waste your money on any of it unless you are really ready. It-s hard - been there, but the end results are worth it. What works for one person doesn-t necessarily work for another. I started by putting my cigarettes in an inconvenient place. Would be surprised how many you can do without if they are not within reach. I quit when they were less than $1 a pack - think of how much money you will be saving. Think of what you could buy yourself if you have that extra money. It-s really a mind game. Good Luck and wait until you have stopped and realize how much it stinks! Don-t Give Up .........
I quit in an oddball way. I kept whole cloves and dried orange peel around me at all times, as well as in my purse. Just the act of having something in my mouth to fiddle with cured me. The added bonus was that I smelled good!

Whole cloves and dried orange peel can be found in the spice section of the supermarket.
Water. Every time you feel like having a cigarette, have some water instead. Most people don-t drink enough water and if you fill up, it may help suppress an increase in appetite.
Nicotine substitutes are rubbish and just prolong your cravings; after about three days of cold turkey, you will start to feel better.
So far Chantax is the best thing I have heard of. I have been taking it for a week and a half and haven-t completely quit as of yet but hope to soon. What it does is stop the pleasure receptor in your brain from enjoying the nicotine. It is kinda costly (about $110 a month supply) but it cost less than smoking forever. Good luck!!
You might perhaps find it in a Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking-.
Chantix -see your doc.

I am quitting smoking very soon and I was thinking about Chantix, I-ve heard some good things. Did it help you quit? How are the side effects? Thanks :)
Chantix is an excellent drug for people really committed to stop smoking. It has wonderful stats supporting its effectiveness. I know many people that have used it and it was a huge support for those that really did want to quit, not just take it because their doc or something told them they should.

There are a few things you should understand about the therapy. First, it is a minimum of 3 months of treatment. This is the standard. If you discontinue taking the medication prior to that, your success rate falls. Also, there have been continued studies that suggest that taking the medication an additional three months improves the success rate. (total of 6 months) But I must disclose that the results at the end of one year are the same for people regardless of if they took 3 months or 6 months (1 in 4 are still smoke free). Lastly, be sure to set a quit date. It will usually be 1 wk after starting the drug. Don-t keep smoking while on the medicine just waiting for your body not to want one.

The most common side effect is upset stomach. It is recommended that you take Chantix with food.

There is also a stop smoking support program that is offered by the makers of Chantix. Instead of offering the medication free, they put the money into this program to encourage those that are interested in discontinuing the habit. It is called Get Quit. I have included a link below for more information.

Best of luck in your endeavour!!!
Congratulations on your decision to stop smoking.
I-ve just started, feel free to take a look at my progress and come back to read how it goes: http://www.squidoo.com/chantixtoquitsmoking

I don-t have any personal experience with the drug but thought that I-d read that a side effect included seizures.

The local hospital may offer a smoking cessation program that includes group counseling and keeping a journal of feelings associated with smoking. Some health insurances will partially or fully pay.
I do not have a any personal experience with Chantix for one simple reason. I wouldn-t go anywhere near the stuff. I have heard so many horror stories that I can not believe that people would even suggest it as an option.

Check out this link for some such horror stories

Chantix has many side effects. These include nausea (30%), sleep problems (insomnia, nightmares, strange - vivid dreams), constipation, gas and vomiting.

Because Chantix works on the brain there are many cases where people who take the drugs report strange behavioral changes. People have known to become depressed, agitated, aggressive, angry and even suicidal. Some have taken their own life or have died as a result of behavioural changes due to taking Chantix.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

I haven-t taken it myself, but I know several people who have. Two people were able to quit for awhile, but started up again later. I also know someone who committed suicide from this drug. Be careful.

Im trying to quit smoking any good tips? -

I need some help trying to kick the habit., Help a Brotha out.
Make it hard to smoke. Only allow yourself to smoke outside (in cold climates in winter it isn-t pleasant).
Keep your hands busy doing other things. Hold on to a pencil etc. Go on the computer...play games
Chew a lot of gum and/or suck on hard candies
Many people are having lots of luck with the new drug chandrix or something (check with your Dr. I didn-t use meds to stop)

Good luck...I feel so much better since I quit.
Keep busy. It will help keep your mind off of it, and in keeping busy and keeping your mind off of it, Change up your routine as much as possible, especially at places/times that you would normally smoke.
What kind of moron would start the habit to begin with? Im just kidding. Go to an expert don-t leave such a serious life or death questions to these morons on the internet. Go to a shrink or a twelve step support group.
well i dont smoke, but my dad did, from when he was like 17 to when he was like 30, and he quit by starting a new habbit [not always good] he chews gum, regular gum, ANY gum. and he might have a CIGAR once or twice a year. so... thats how he stopped, but he chews gum like crazy so .... yup

[ps: Its really cool, thats you are trying to stop! Good 4 u]
hope this helps
Three words; Chantix, Chantix, Chantix! I smoked for over 25 years; and I mean smoked. Up to two packs a day of Marlboro Reds. I quit for good in May; best thing I have ever done! I tried other things like the patch, and gum, but never actually quit. If you are ready to throw the smokes to the side, ask your Dr about Chantix. P.S. I do not work for, nor do I know anybody that works for Cantix...It just worked for me!
Break all you smoking habits. stop smoking on the way to work. after that stop smoking with you coffee. etc. you-ll quit.
ohh i recently quit to and i think its good that your quiting
i wasn-t as addicted as most people...so for me i just stopped making cigarettes readily available to me (ehh i basically just stopped buying them and told my brother to hide my money D:)

and then i took up another habit (chewing gum) so that i would sort of get my mind of smoking

one of the hardest things to get over is the nicotine addiction so maybe nicotine patches or something else would help with that if you are having trouble getting over that

Will I look younger then if I quit smoking? -

Will I look younger then if I quit smoking? -

It-s being shown in my other question that smoking ages us. If I quit smoking, will I begin to look younger, like - will the premature aging that smoking has caused, begin to reverse? if so, how long will it take?
Yes. Take a look at Keith Richards.
Yes.
Drink a ton of water too and plenty of Vitamin A, C and E tablets.
You-ll heal at about 1% per day.

It really works- trust me!
It could possibly make a difference to your complexion (not forgetting your pocket).
Your body regenerates totally every seven years, and it is constantly undergoing renewal. Therefore, stop smoking now and begin the repairs. Although everybody-s different, it stands to reason that at the very least you want to arrest the smoking-related aging, and you just might see some reverses.
You wont look younger but you will slow down the aging process
It will make a big difference to your skin. My partner smoked for 20 years, he gave up in November and his skin is looking a lot smoother, was really dry before when he smoked.

Smoking does really age you, so good luck in giving up!
yes, smoking dehydrates, causes wrinkles
smoking will have an effect on your skin-s appearence, as does drinking alcohol. your skin will probably improve, but it all depends on how long you have been smoking for and how many per day. good luck giving up - sure you will feel benefits of it.
You might not look younger but you will feel better about your self :)
Your skin will really improve - the tone and texture. I gave up smoking six months ago and my skin looks much brighter!.
