What is the best way to quit smoking? -

I would suggest finding a herbal alternative like the herb -damiana- and switching to that.

It has very mild euphoric properties, which is enough to dispel the anxiety caused by the nicotine addiction.

also, the physical act of smoking the alternative satisfies the physical smoking habbit.

Once you have taken out the nicotine addiction, you can then work on the physical smoking habit and work at stopping smoking the herbal alternative.

Good Luck : )
When it was time for me to quit smoking, I tried everything. I used Life-Savers and gum and hypnotism, and that thing with all the needles..........Heroin. Just kidding about the heroin. Hypnotism worked for me with a large rubber band on my wrist for aversion therapy. When I wanted a smoke, I would just pull the band back a few inches and give myself a snap.
I also chewed a bunch of sugar free gum for oral gratification.
cold turkey.

I want to quit smoking and am interested in Zyban... does it work? -

I am wondering if Zyban will be successful in aiding my attempt to quit. I have heard about side effects of the drug, including weight loss-- is this true? I know that quitting smoking can promote weight gain, and if Zyban helps with weight loss it is more motivating to me.

Please let me know what you might know about this drug personally. I-ve read a lot about it, but I want some first-hand information. Thanks!
Zyban may work for you but many people report unwelcome side effects. Your brain is a chemical factory so it-s not surprising if you fiddle with it by adding foreign chemicals you may have some unwanted side effects. Why not try a natural way of quitting by trying to understand why you smoke?

There are three reasons why people tend to put on weight when they quit smoking:
1.Generally, for most people their appetite improves because the toxins in tobacco have the effect of suppressing appetite. It’s tragic that this is one reason why young women start to smoke, because they believe it will help them keep weight off. When your appetite improves you may find you want to eat more. ADVICE: Eat healthily and get active. That means nutritious foods in satisfactory portions – don’t pig out on rubbish foods with high sugar, fat and salt content and do some exercise.
2.The minor physical withdrawal symptoms from nicotine feel exactly like being a bit hungry. So don’t make the mistake of trying to satisfy the withdrawal from nicotine with food. ADVICE: Recognise that during the first 5-7 days the empty hungry feeling isn’t real hunger. Have a drink of water or do a quick relaxation exercise instead of eating.
3.Many smokers make the mistake of searching for a substitute to replace the cigarette. Often this will be lollies or high calorific snacks like chocolates, biscuits, cream cakes or sausage rolls! ADVICE: Do not use any substitutes – you don’t need them.

If you follow this advice you won’t put on weight, in fact you’ll lose it, because once you quit you’ll feel much more motivated to get out there and be active.

Good luck!

Zyban is EXACTLY the same chemical as Wellbutrin.

Take that into consideration before you use it. Everyone I-ve ever talked to said it did work well, but they did have to deal with the side effects of a medication that was designed for depression. If you don-t need an SSRI, it can give you anxiety (worse than a nicotene fit), make you depressed and possibly even suicidal and withdrawl off of that chemical can make you really sick.

Be careful. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
i ordered SMOKE AWAY and believe it or not it worked. I mean i still smoke when i drink but thats it, i go for days w/ out one and its been almost 2 months now. Try it!
Depends on your make up. It did not work for me but it did help with mood swings. I stopped with cigarest, vitamin ,gum and tablets. It really curbed the urge. I have also tried patches which gave me nightmares and even when I was awake thought I was still in the dream. Didn-t like that at ALL! Cigarest you control your cravings with the gum and tablet. The vitamin is an herb that makes cigarettes taste bad and weird If you smoke lets say in your coat it will make you sick by the smell of it. Cost 100 bucks or you can try the net and get first set of everything for I think it was 16 dollars. Well worth it. Do it for a month and see cancel order or send back your money is your again to try something different. Good Luck!!
I used Chantix to quit this time. I did gain weight, but at the same time, I ate everything in sight! I have since lost the weight because I realized that I substituted the smoking addiction for a food addiction! This is what usually happens when people quit smoking. I have used Zyban/Wellbutrin before and it didn-t help me quit smoking and it gave me terrible headaches. I recommended learning more about Chantix. I know of 15 people who have used it and quit successfully! I also know of 3 who have used it and didn-t quit, so it-s really about the individual. Just remember to keep taking it for the 3-6 months recommended even if you think you don-t need it (that is if you decide to try this instead)!! I have tried several quit smoking products over the years and am very thankful for CHANTIX!! It is the best!!!

Has anyone used Resolve to quit smoking? Does it work? -

I-m thinking about trying it, just wondering if there are any sucess stories.
To stop smoking is hard, and most smokers cannot quit - and if they do - it is only for a short time. More and more people are getting into the natural way of doing things anymore, and using herbs to stop smoking is a very popular method for smokers today. Those who have been able to quit smoking with using herbs as a preventive, swear by them as a successful aid. They help in combating the withdrawal symptoms that every smoker faces when he tries to give up smoking. Among other things, the herbal cures lead to positive mood swings and reduce the urge to light another cigarette.

One of the natural substances that can be used by people when they want to quit smoking is Lobelia, or Indian tobacco, an old and controversial herb that has recently become popular to smokers who want to quit the habit and cannot. Used for centuries as an expectorant that cleans the lungs, it was used for asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough, or pleurisy. Many uses are connected with Lobelia - relaxants, antispasmodics, diaphoretics, reducing inflammations and pain, poultices, hyperactivity, easing muscle tension or convulsions - which go back in history until its recent popularity today. Many believe it makes the taste of regular tobacco -repulsive- while other naturalists use it to clam the nerves and relax the body muscles, easing mild depression. Lately, current evidence suggests the herb Lobelia can produce similar effects on the human body as nicotine, yet is not addictive and helps eliminate the desire to smoke. There is trouble when it is overused, such as vomiting, drowsiness, weak pulse, and respiratory failure.

Another herb is the Mimosa tea (-mimosa hostilis-), a perennial evergreen shrub that is native to northeastern Brazil and also found in southern Mexico. The root bark is the choice part of the plant, traditionally used in the preparation of a psychoactive sacramental beverage. Giving up smoking may make you feel anxious, or give you a headache but a strong cup of Mimosa tea can boost your mood and help you calm down. It is not addictive and is recommended for use instead of anti-depressant medicines. Similarly, the traditional Chinese CaoSu herb diminishes the desire to smoke.

Smoking non-tobacco cigarettes look like regular cigarettes and are available in many flavors like burnt sienna and menthol. They offer the same sensation while smoking as regular cigarettes but are healthier because they don-t contain nicotine or tar. However, you must consult your doctor before taking these or any herbal medicines, because many of them may contain substances similar to drugs. You must also eat lots of raw or lightly steamed fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of water, fruit juice, herbal tea, etc, to flush out the nicotine. Try taking hot baths, whirlpool baths, and saunas. These make you feel better, and reduce the urge to smoke. Another way to fight the craving for nicotine is to chew on a large flavored toothpick, or squirt juice into your mouth. Similarly, drinking herbal tea, which is made from five different herbs, can help you to fight the urge to smoke.

I quit cold turkey after smoking a lot of years a pack and more a day. People use the excuse they don-t want to get fat, you are the only one making yourself fat, not quit smoking. Just quit, throw all your ciggs, lighters, ashtrays away, open your windows and air your car and house out and you will enjoy being able to breathe again! beleive me, I have been quit for 2 1/2 years and love it! I could never go back to that nasty habit, good luck!
I have a friend who used Resolve and hasn-t smoked in two years.

GL!

i don-t want to quit because i don-t want to get fat

I like cigerettes, but my boyfriend doesnt smoke and his grandma died from breathing problems, after 45 years of smoking! Any ideas how I can cheer up by quitting smoking... I know it bothers him even if he doesnt say so!!!
ask your doctor for Chantix.
Try chantix. Its a new medication on the market. Ask your doctor for a prescription. Its great. I quit smoking off of it. Its a 1 month treatment. Ive been smoke free for 2 months and you can be 2. good luck to yeah. its hard but you can do it.
If you-ve tried to quit and were unable to, maybe you can try Chantix
http://www.chantix.com

While I don-t advocate medication taking in general, I think that with a really bad habit like smoking you will be better off quitting sooner rather than later.

Good luck!

PS: And to the previous answerer, that-s uncalled for. Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for yourself!
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
Hello, You don-t say how long you have smoked but here goes. I was a heavy smoker for 50 yrs. The last 20 yrs I have tried every method known and had ZERO success. April of 07 I talked with a Doctor and he put me on a pill called -Chantix-.. I only took it for 10 days because it was making me sick but I havent had a cigarette since and never will have.. Please see a Doctor and have them explain Chantix to you.

What is a good method to help quit smoking...? -

I will be 25 next month and have been smoking since I was 14. I quit when I found out I was pregnant, the baby helped, the smell would make me sick to my stomach. I started back when she was a week old. My daughter is now 7 years old. I want to quit, but it is soooo hard. I find it helps -calm my nerves-. Also, I am worried about gaining more weight if I quit. Any suggestions please. Also, please be nice, I am asking for advice, not rude remarks. Thank you.
Quitting smoking is a process that requires careful planning, courage, discipline, and commitment. You can succeed by following this advice:

1. Pick a quit day
Choose a date within the next two or three weeks to quit. Having a deadline makes it easier to plan how you will handle the people, places and situations that make you want to smoke. Try to choose a time that is not particularly stressful. But don-t wait forever for the -perfect- day - pick a quit date now and work with it.

2. Chosen one or more proven quit-smoking methods
Your chances of success are greater if you combine quit methods like counselling, self-help guides, the patch and other medicines. Learn more about methods to help you quit smoking. Choose the methods that will work best for you. It also helps to:
List your reasons for quitting - health, family, money
Write down the things that can replace smoking: healthy alternatives like exercise, or a new hobby
Speak with friends, family, and colleagues who can give you support. Tell them about your plan to quit, so it feels more real to you. Start making the lifestyle changes that will support your plan - leave cigarettes at home when you go out, remove the ashtrays from your home

Consider joining a support group. Some people find it helpful to talk to others who are also trying to quit. Contact your provincial Lung Association to find a support group in your community.

3. Work your plan

It-s your quit date. Be firm that you won-t smoke.
Review your plan often. Knowing how you-re going to handle the urge to smoke will help you better cope with cravings
Avoid those people and situations where you will be tempted to smoke
Go for a walk instead of a smoke.
Find a hobby that keeps your hands and mind busy
Clean your teeth, your clothes, your house of that stale tobacco smell
Be positive. You are choosing to be smoke-free
Celebrate your success

Believe in yourself and your plan
Understand that it takes time to re-learn smoke-free habits
Remember, that quitting is a process, not an event
Though your recovery begins within hours of your last smoke, it takes at least three weeks to make a new habit. Don-t be discouraged if you slip. It-s part of the process. You are not a failure. Review your plan and ask yourself how you can do it differently next time.
Reward yourself
nicotine
My son made up his mind to quit smoking because it-s not good for his health. He never had one minutes problem. He-d been smoking for 25 years. He-s 45 now.
You have so many reasons to quit. Not only for you and your health, but most importantly for your 7 year old daughter. You are allowing the smoke to go through her little body and lungs. They don-t know what-s good and bad for them. Sometimes they don-t like some of the things that we do, but what can they do to protect themselves? You don-t want her to grow up to be a smoker. Smoking can cause so much trouble. Cancer is one of the possibilities. I hope you will be good to yourself and your daughter and stop.
We don-t get but one chance at life. So, try to make it the best one you can have.
Good luck.
First, study how much and where you smoke and don-t smoke.
Make larger gaps between smoking to help cut down, and stay at places where you never smoke longer. Over time you should notice you smoking is being cut down, and over more time make the gap bigger.
It-s easier to cut down first, and easier to cut down by staying at places where you would never smoke or can-t smoke.
Remember to give yourself time.
I just joined this wed site called quitnet. You take a test and they tell you the best way for you personally to quit smoking. I am also worried about gaining weight so they suggested I use the gum. Here is the web addy:
OMG- I have so been there. I always had a cup of water in the microwave ready and waiting, and a box of chamomille tea, which really calms your nerves BETTER than nicotine, and has a longer lasting affect. 40 seconds to calm.

In the summer I would carry around cold green tea with chamomille in it. I would make a gallon on Sundays and then drink about 20 ounces of it a day.

It worked for me...

licorice if you like it also works because it has a strong taste and is hard to chew. Tires out your mouth, freashens your breath, and has not fat. It also is a nervine. Mostly it satisfys that open mouth insert object craving without making you fat:)

have fun and good luck. I still drink green tea, and have chamomile once a day:)
Cold Turkey is the best and the hardest. weigh yourself every day to monitor your weight and just quite. That is how my mom quit and how I quit too. It is all about mental control, quiting smoking.
I just quit on new years and I-d have to say that the gum really didnt work but the book included with it did have some good points. You have to learn to avoid associating cigarettes with certain situations in which you smoke. Like if you smoke when you wake up, find something else to do like excersize. Also if you smoke when you are stressed, try takin a bath or shower instead.
Also you have to look at the deeper perspective of this, looking into how it affects others. Do you want to be around for childs grandchildren? How would your husband feel if you got sick? I-ve learned to believe that smoking is very self centered. As it offends people even by it-s smell. Having been a smoker I know first hand how hard it is. Just find things that-ll help make it stick, like maybe painting your walls in your house, because we all know theyre probably tainted with yellow smoke if you were smoking indoors. This will make you feel guilty for smoking inside if you do. Anything helps, hope this does. Good Luck!
You should have very strong willpower. As i has also quit the smoking after 15 years regular smoking. Nothing has to do only think heartily that NOW AND ONWARDS U HAVE TO NOT SMOKE. The weight gain/loss is just psychological not real. So go ahead and all the best.

Any advice on how to quit smoking tobacco? -

I feel anxious without a cigarette. No money for gum or medications, and no interest, either.
well..

can tell you the only thing that worked for me was finding a support group.. im a member of nicotine anonymous, and Attend meetings both online, and locally... online voice meetings are as close as your computer.. there is really no wrong way to quit.. however you decide to proceed good luck!!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
1. Look into the different self-help ways to quit smoking. Some of them can be done without spending any amount.
2. Pick a quit date. Choose one when you are not stressed.
3. When you stop smoking, be sure to have exercise every day. It-s one of the best ways to relieve yourself from the stress of not being able to smoke and is very good to keep you fit.
4. Join stop smoking programs. It helps a lot to be with people who are undergoing the same situation you are in. You can start a support group for each other to help you in your battle against smoking.
First of all YOU have to want to quit, not your partner, or parents or whomever. Pick a date not too far ahead as -Q Day- The day before smoke yourself silly. Make sure that when you go to bed that night there are no smokes left in the house, all the ashtrays are clean and out of sight, throw out the lighters and matches and make sure to dump the most disgusting mess of garbage possible on top of any butts you-ve put in the garbage can.
Okay -Q Day-
If you used to have black coffee and a smoke first thing, try tea.
If you used to have a beer and a smoke after work, try wine. Change your habits.
Not everyone quits forever the first time. If you backslide just try again.
It-s a hard addiction to beat. After 30 years as an ex-smoker my Dad still wanted a smoke everytime he had a beer.
You can do it if YOU want it.
Good luck
Then you are probably not serious enough to quit. But if you want to try, what you do is throw your cigarettes away. Some people will be OK, not everyone is heavily addicted or even addicted at all. Some people will rapidly discover why they-re called -addictive.-
Go buy some skoal and throw in some bombs
staying busy and snacks can help a lot

Does working out help you quit smoking? -

I-m an ashamed smoker of about 7 years (I-m 22 now) and desperately want to quit as I-ve had enough and can-t stand the smell. Does working out help your mind to concentrate on other things besides cigarettes? I haven-t really taken the chance to stop before but now I just want to get rid of the habit because I want to be healthy. Also, if I did get back into working out and quit smoking, how long would it take to get all of the tobacco and tar out of my system? Thanks.
You are an -ashamed smoker-? Seriously? Why are you ashamed?
Quit because you want to not because you-re ashamed!
Anything you do to keep busy will help - maybe you should go around asking every non-smoker for forgiveness for smoking for 7 years. That should keep you busy.

Wow... you should be ashamed of being ashamed!
definately it will be of help. it will help you divert ur mind and keeps u busy. except this you need some will power too...

Any advice on how to quit smoking pot? -

I have been smoking forever, and want to quit. But I don-t...I keep on smoking. Any suggestions?
If you have any TRUE future goals then that should be enough to say i am done smoking. However if you still cant stop then you wont stop until you are ready. but if you have no other choice get pulled over by the cops i am sure that probation will make you clean up you act. Just remember the key to life is determination
I promised my girlfriend that as long as me and her are together, i won-t smoke anything.

Its been a month.

It was kinda hard for a while, but you sorta feel refreshed after laying off stuff for a bit.

In the end, all i am saying is, try making a commitment to somebody you deeply care about.

It is working for me, i think.
Figure out why you like it then try to do similar things. Do you tend to smoke only when you-re bored? Try to find a hobby or something.

If you just smoke it because it makes ya feel good then I don-t know... Get a vaporizer and at least you will be healthier.
I feel ya...Stay busy, exercise, drink plenty of water, and the most important..Sleep! It is going to be horrible the first three days, after that it gets a lot better!

Stay focused, and keep ur head up!
Just stop! If it-s that important to you, then don-t hang out with people who do, and have it available for you. Seriously? C-mon.
Go cold turkey.
If you-re seriously too addicted to that, then you-re probably too stoned to be able to read this.
Or see a doc.
Yes.

RUN OUT.

Works for most people.
stop buying the stuff and you-ll have nothing to smoke?

Doh!!

Has anyone been on chantix to quit smoking? -

I got rx for chantix and read so many bad things like sucidal, nightmares. Please let me know if you have tried it or know of someone that has.
Yes, there have been some serious side effects for some users of this medication.

I know of more people who have had issues with it than not.

However, it is you that needs to weigh out your thoughts and concerns about it.

When I quit, I used the Patch. I found it worked with limited side effects. It took a few days for me to get used to it... it was itchy for the first hour it was on and I did get vivid dreams. However, it was still better than smoking.

If you want to get a lot of opinions from people on it and people who used it (as well as other quit smoking aides) and also want to know what to expect and how to deal with the trials of quitting, use this site:

http://www.quitnet.com

Its free to use by the way... and you will not get junk mail for signing up. It was a real life saver for me and I can bet you-ll find it really helpful. So do take the time to look over the site and ask questions in the forums.
I-m only just started using Chantix but will be logging my experience here: http://www.squidoo.com/chantixtoquitsmoking . Feel free to take a look.

There-s a good article here:
http://www.lawyersusaonline.com/index.cf…
concerning the 200+ lawsuits filed either by people who have been rendered suicidal or the next of kin for those who have succeeded. Apparently there are at least another 1500 cases in the pipeline.

It accounted for more serious injuries than any other prescription drug in the last quarter of 2007 according to the FDA.

The Federal Aviation Administration has banned it from being taken by pilots and air traffic controllers, and it has been banned for commercial drivers.

Frankly it-s verging on being more directly and visibly harmful than smoking.
i have used chantix. it decreased my desire for smoking but not enough for me to quit completely. it may have if i had stayed on it longer but the stomach upset i had made me stop. i will probably try again at a later date with a lower dosage after i cut down on my own first.
as for dreams, i had some lucid ones but they were very boring. no suicidal thoughts or nightmares. i think the people who have them may be more prone to them without the medication. combining chantix with welbutrin might help.
I bought an herb called Lobelia. About 18.00 a bottle. It worked very well on me to quit after smoking for 25+ years. Nothing else has ever worked. It mimics Nicotine, and completly takes the desire away, leaving you only with the habit of holding the ciggy. Then just chew and hold onto a straw.
I have tried Chantix several times but what is bad about is the fact that after a while I would just start smoking agan. Hypnosis did the trick for me. You can find a good product on this page :

How do I quit smoking? -

I have to quit smoking now. Right now. My throat has been killing me and I just want all of this to stop. It-s causing more stress than it actually relieves at this point. I don-t really know what to do though... does anyone have any advice or anything?
Of all the methods out there, the best one is still cold turkey.

You just stop, feel like you-re in the Twilight Zone for a few days, and then it-s over. Of course, you have a mental battle after that: you start to think it wasn-t so bad after all, etc. This can go on for years.

The American Cancer Society has some helpful ideas, too.

Millions have done it, and so can you.
It is really hard to quit. Depending on your age and how long you-ve been smoking. I didn-t use medication or go to therapy or anything. When I felt like having a cig, I said to myself NO. And I would wait until I couldn-t wait anymore, then I-d have a cig. Before I knew it I was going two or three hours without one. I-d find myself in a situation where I knew I wouldn-t be able to smoke for at least a couple of hours, and I-d purposely not have that -last- smoke. Just so I could go those few hours. Just keep putting that cig off. I-ve smoked for twenty years and when I decided to quit, I was up to 3 packs a day. It-s not easy. Good Luck!
start with the patch.........
1 hour without smoking makes your heart beat normal, what else if you stop smoking?
I belive you need to get your mind focased onto something else, discover what you like doing, write letters, go for a long walk, leave the cigs at home of course. get rid of all things to do with smoking, ash trays - the like. when the erge to smoke grips you have a drink of water breath in deep - tell yourself -I am no longer a smoker- remind your self of the long term health benifits you will have from being a non smoker, put the money that you would normally spend on cigs into a jar, at the end of the week -wow- what a bonus. As for your sore throat garggling with cooled boiled salted water a few times a day may help, if you feel you have strep throat or infection you may need to get some antibiotics from the doc.

congrats on becoming a non smoker from this point on.
yes buddy, i have some piece of advice for you on how you can quit smoking forever, but this demands for a lot of efforts from your side. if you are enough determined then nothing can stop you from reaching your target of a smoke-free life :
Avoid places with lots of smokers and try to keep away from your smoking friends when you have bad cravings. They-ll make it the hardest to quit. Tea and coffee are supposed to make you crave cigarettes more. Another thing is, try to change up your routine to where you can-t go out and smoke. That-s another thing that-s hard, your body is used to getting it-s nicotine dose at certain times a day.

Working out helps really well when you-re stressed and it can help your lungs get back to normal too.

You can also take Wellbutrin, it-s an antidepressant and one of it-s side effects is smoking cessation.
Get a hobby. Chew some nicotine gum.
