What are some tips to help me quit smoking? -

I-m trying to quit for my pregnant girlfriend. What are some tips to quitting, because it-s very difficult to me? I-d appreciate anyone-s help.
Think of the possible consequences before lighting the cigarette. Smoking can cause one several different kinds of cancer, especially lung cancer, but also tongue cancer, as well as other kinds of cancer. It also affects your budget to certain degree. Generally speaking, the average smoker in the United States spends over 100,000 dollars in a decade-s time simply by buying cigarettes. That-s quite a bit of money, which certainly can be used much more effectively, going on vacation for example. That amount of money can also be saved for future tough times. As we are currently witnessing, economical recessions happen in cycles more often than people might think.

Moreover, think about the way smoking impacts your life. For instance, you happen to be at a meeting, while the urge to smoke is eating you inside. You lose your cool and the meeting doesn-t go very well. Think of your future son or daughter and the smoking will impact them - unfortunately, infants and young kids are much too vulnerable to afford smoking around them; second-hand smoking can cause breathing illnesses and cancer. Its effects are nearly the same when compared to mainstream smoking.

Plus, in reality, regardless of the great number of people who smoke, smoking is still seen skeptically among non-smokers. To your face, a lot of people will not judge you, however behind your back they might do so.

To sup up, pull yourself together and believe that you are going to beat nicotine ... many people have!
I have quit a number of times. What seemed to work best was to give my self another alternative to the activity of smoking. Whenever I wanted one I would go make myself a cup of tea, or take a walk outside, or something to give myself a break. The patch makes it easier. The lozenges gave me a sore throat. I also visualized my lungs black and encrusted like the bottom of an ashtray every time I craved one.

The hardest, but best way, is to just stop.
In the Uk you can get free prescription patches or inhalers.
Set yourself a date to stop, say about 4/5 weeks hence.
Meanwhile, think about the damage smoking is doing to
your health and finances. Put a jar aside, and put your
ciggy money in there. (I bought a microwave oven after just
3 weeks). Avoid situations when you normally smoke.
If you have a fag after dinner, then keep yourself busy. Do
the washing up!
I found that the inhaler both gave me a shot of nicotine and
gave me something to do with my hands...it-s pretty much
like smoking, without the damage.

(I admire your for wanting to stop, not because you particularly
want to, but to help your girlfriend)

My Dr. told me not to quit. Quitting causes stress and will harm the
baby. So I cut back to 5-7 a day. The result. 3 pregnancies, 3 big
and healthy babies. All because I listened to my Dr. His advice
benefited my children.
Avoid other people that smoke, at least for the first two weeks. Try chewing the gum or the patch. Mostly it-s just mind of matter, and realizing that you really don-t need it. Don-t bother reading tips and statistics, just do it.
drink coffee instead, ask your doctor, seek help. give someone a dollar ever time you smoke a cigarette. Or you can draw a picture of a un healthy lung to remind you that smoking can kill you.

Don-t be another statistic
Try some gum that helps you quit, wear the patches, and stay away from the smell and everytime you start to crave some try to do something to keep you busy.
Just throw them in the trash, and like, think of all
the consequences that you-ll get if you DONT stop,

like cancer for instance, theres no going back
once you get cancer from smoking :)

Cold Turkey. Decide one day to give it up and then just do it. I woke up one morning and said -That-s it. I-m done.- I never looked back. If you have to, take a camping trip for the weekend so that you don-t get the urge!
well you can always use gum allways ,allways have it in your mouth so when you go for a smoke you-ll remember not to. and sun flower seeds are good, try to get addicted to them instead.
My mom used Chantix and it worked. She was a two pack a day smoker and she-s doing wonderfully. I think it cost $120 but you only need to buy it once and hey,it works,so its worth it! :) Good luck
do NOT smoke in the morning.
try and make it through lunch. if you work in an office it is easier.

the less you smoke, the less you you want it. TRUST ME.

gum is good too
I tried using the patch and quitting cold turkey. Honestly though, try Chantix. It-s pretty much amazing. You have weird (not scary) dreams and you will not crave cigarettes at all. Seriously.
theres another SAFE drug called chantix, and its a pill
it works REALLY good
and there ia a special type of gum call nicotine
that also works good
Just keep busy, chew gum to help with nervousness, and try not to flip out on people, even though your probably not going to be able to help it.
Work on your self control. Convince yourself that you are stronger than your silly addiction and just stop. Its not like you will die or anything if you quit.
Every time you crave a cig think about your child, and how much he/she means to you. Don-t choose a cig over your family.
Cold Turkey my man...........Its pretty good on some bread or you can just eat it plain.
Uhhh I DONT KNOW
why dont you calm down and order a pizza
if that doesnt wirk
chew some gum or sunflower seeds

I smoke and I never crave it.
Craving it is all in PEOPLES HEADS!!!!!
get one of those cone things they put on dogs to keep them from scratching themselves lol.
every time you get a craving instead of smoking chew some gum
nicotine gum
Nicotine patch/gum

Then slowly decrease the use of those two
Patches, gum, and keep yourself busy.

tons of other sites with good ideas.
STOP!
yes just stop.
don-t buy cigarettes. do it for the baby!
chupa chup lollies helped me or just sweets
remember y ur doing it
seriously man...ask GOD 2 help u cuz u dont wanna be smoking around ur baby

This is my first day and I-m feeling edgy, I-m hoping to get some suggestions on how to deal with the stress of stopping .....
I know this may sound weird, but Bananas can help people trying to give up smoking. The B-6 and B-12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body-s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

So try eating some bananas :)
i quit 5 months ago i started on the patch and wore it for a week and felt i didn-t need it and well 5 months later still smoke free thank god
I got hypnotized. It worked great!! Best $ I ever spent.
I tried quitting for 15 yrs with no success, but this yr i have been able to quit the habit for 5 months now. I came up with my own silly way of quiting. I bought 1 pack of nicrotte gum and did not follow there directions. Instead i decided to go as long as i possible could without a cigarette (which was about 6 hrs) and then have a piece of the gum, following there directions on how to chew it. I continued this pattern and the time in between pieces of gum increased quite a bit.

After my little experiment was done i was able to stop chewing the gum after a week, and i only went through about 6 pcs.

Its a great feeling kicking the habit and i wish all you aspiring quitters out there the best of luck :)
I read Alan Carr-s Easyway. It really helps with the mental aspect of quitting. Also check out www.quitnet.com which is a free support website for anyone trying to quit.

Good luck!

Nicole
well thats just grand. give yourself a pat on the back.

ya but seriously, get addicted 2 somethin else, like ummmmmmmmmmmm OOOH!! coffee! i luuuuve coffee!!!!!!!!!!!! no icecream! i luve icecream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
gum, chew gum, when i got the urge to smoke i chewed gum it helped me have been smoke free for 5 years
I stopped smoking cigars...
I got ratted out a week after I was off cold turkey.
(I-m still looking for that bass turd)
I went cold turkey have been smoke free for almost a month.
Best of luck to you. My sister has done the ear staple, for smoking and weight loss, both of which she says she-s having good results with. I also have family that used acupuncture with great results, so if you feel like you might be slipping, try either one of these.
Okay, I took some index cards and wrote ONE statement on each one. (bear with me here, it really helped me!)
My hair smells cleaner
My breath is fresher
My clothes smell . . . . . you get the point right? All the GOOD things about NOT smoking.

Then I also wrote statements negative about smoking. My BIGGEST one, was -smoking interrupts everything that I do-.
Isn-t it true? you have to stop whatever you-re doing to smoke. You have to spend $$$, you have to go to buy them. You have to go outside (where it-s cold or hot), or off property at some jobs. Whenever I thought of a statement that clicked with me, I wrote it down on a different 3x5 card.

Now then, what to do during those times when you WEREN-T doing anything? the normal times you would be smoking? I always had these cards with me. And I would read them. One at a time. These are all reinforcements of NOT SMOKING and reminds you of the reasons for quitting. As redundant as it sounds, I ALSO had cards that said -smoking makes my hair smell like smoke-
smoking makes my breath smell like an ashtray
smoking makes my clothes smell gross - smoking makes my fingers turn yellow - smoking makes my teeth turn yellow - smoking pollutes my lungs -- I want to live a long life for (whoever -- I put my future children). By the time I got through the stack, I was feeling better about it, and I wasn-t wanting to smell gross, and have yellow teeth, etc. (and my break was over)

Smoke breaks? gonna miss them? I still went! But now this is a big test, because you have to be sure you-re not gonna start again!! co-workers teased me and we called it my -carrot stick break- -- instead of a cigarette, I held a carrot stick in my mouth (and ate it too). The other thing that helped with that action of having something to do with your hands, or something in your mouth, was I drank EVERYTHING with a straw. water, milk, soda, EVERYTHING. Just the action of putting the straw to my mouth was the action of putting the cigarette to my mouth (but don-t inhale!!! lol)

Eventually, the urges go away, if you can make it through the first 10 days to 3 weeks, then there-s NO POINT in returning.
Hey, this is your time, if you-re edgy (irritable) they can deal with it!! You-re doing something GOOD darnit, and if you gotta be a little crabby, then so be it!! (Did I mention hubby and I almost got a divorce? lol -- we quit together, I don-t recommend it, but no fair if one still gets to smoke!)

Eventually, smoking will be a thing of the past. And you-ll be like us now, after a night in a bar or other smoky place, we have to take off our clothes, and take a shower / wash hair before we can even sit down or go to bed at home.

GOOD LUCK -- I know you can do it if I did!

How do I quit smoking safely without gaining weight? -

I have been smoking for 23 years and I have tried many ways to quit and have not been successful at yet. I did quit for 4 years but did it cold turkey way and I gained too much weight. How can I quit safely and not gain any weight as I am currently trying to lose from 155 lbs down to 130 lbs. Can anyone help me?
there-s two things that lead to weight gain for most people who quit smoking.

1. biologically, your body no longer has to spend calories to detoxify itself from the cigarettes. which means if you eat as you did while you smoke, you-re going to end up storing those extra calories.

2. behaviorally, you-re used to doing something physically to occupying yourself, whether it-s just holding the cigarette or actually taking a puff.

i-d suggest you keep both of these things in mind and try to solve them in whatever manner suits you best. for #1 i-d suggest either cutting down your calories (just slightly, maybe like 10%), or begin adding regular exercise to your daily routine. as for #2, you can start chewing sugar free gum or snack on low calorie veggies.
Hi when I quit last year I went on a diet at the same time as i knew i would pile on even more weight so I would suggest if you want to improve your health generally, lose weight and have more energy then getting some nutritional help is vital. Once your body starts to absorb the right nutrients and vitamins and protein then you’ll be amazed how quickly you will feel the difference, usually within the first 48 hours if you get the right supplements and help. I had no energy and felt just generally rotten all round so I sought the advice of a nutritional coach (whose advice was FREE) and got myself some great products, I even got free samples before I got started so I could see just how good they were!! There is a website called myhealthabc.com If go on there and fill out the details (you must be over 18 and you’ll need a debit or credit card-or someone who can help you) page you will get a call with no pressure about what you need. There is a mall area as well that’s got some great info and its all set out with easy to follow headings so you can find what you want. It’s so easy and the stuff they have is excellent. I have been using their products for over two years and I feel great. I lost 70 pounds in less than seven months!! My sister lost 60 pounds in five months. The stuff is amazing. Try them you won’t be disappointed. I even started to use their skin care range last year and my skin is in such good condition now. All my facial marks have completely gone. Try them you won’t be disappointed.
Take a look at the information on the blog and see if it helps.
When you quit, try not to replace cigarettes with food. That-s the only reason people gain, they eat too much. You need another distraction like working out when you crave a cigarette, or drink water. Anything that is not food related.
try chewing gum for starters then call to see your doctor he should be able to help you out.good luck
unless you gain 70 pounds from quiting cold turkey it is healthier to quit
I wish I could help you but I am in the same boat.I haven-t smoked in ten weeks but I am getting bigger by the day.I am very close to buying a pack and starting again. Good luck!!!

Has anyone quit smoking and regretted it? -

You always hear stories that people feel amazing after they stop smoking, but does anyone out there NOT feel like that?
NOPE...just the opposite...
I quit 3 yrs ago, in March and have never regretted it.
what I regret?
NOT doing it SOONER!!!
1) I can breathe--no more hacking hacking hacking...every morning and every time I slept on my back!!
2) I-m a runner and my running is NOW effortless
3) MONEY...
4) freedom..no more ball and chain....will I have enough...where-s my lighter, where can I smoke, will I be uncomfortable --wherever I am going..movie, sport event, dentist..whatever....
5) MONEY..my God, I-ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars
6) I used to get distance FROM MY KIDS...so they wouldn-t inhale the smoke....can you believe it??
7) I can smell things again
8) I can taste things again

***********and this is HUGE***********
no matter how stressed I am..(I-ve gone through deaths of loved ones, etc.)..I am COMPLETELY more calm than I ever was as a smoker...the amount of calm is indescribable, as an ex-smoker.!!

I-ve kept track of the money I-ve saved and have begun spending it on other things that I LOVE

here are my stats:
1191 days, 6 hours, 27 minutes and 17 seconds

Cigarettes NOT smoked: 23825

Lifetime Saved: 6 months, 1 day, 23 hours

Money Saved: $4,768.00
There really are no advantages.

It-s a disease...an addiction.
Just like alcohol, food, sex, drugs.

It is an addiction.
[damn...you just made me light one up!]

I hate smoking...everything about it!
Hate it! Hate it!
I hate what it does to my lungs.
I hate what it does to my clothes.
I hate what it does to my car.
I hate feeling hated by the rest of
the world and have to go outside
the building 15 feet away to smoke.
I find myself smoking more if I know
I-m going someplace where I can-t
smoke.

[no other addicts are made to do that...
do you see sex addicts having to go
15 feet outside a building to have sex??
or fat people 15 feet outside a building
eating their double whopper cheeseburger
with extra cheese?]
ok...that was a joke.... but a true joke.

The only thing I heard that works
is this -anti-depressant- that will make
you quit.

Do I want to take more drugs to make
me stop taking another~ nicotine??
So I can
get addicted to an anti-depressant?

When I was a kid...they didn-t give
us the evil info on cigs...so, after
smoking half my life...I-m stuck and
it sucks! It-s my only vice. I don-t
drink or any of the other nasty stuff.
Just one nasty thing ~ smoke!

Someday...when all my stress it
out of my life~ maybe I can quit.
Yeah, the last time I had quit.. I couldn-t stand it. Months after quitting I really regretted it. I missed the time consumption it gave me. Plus just sitting back and relaxing with a smoke, off staring at the ceiling with things just running through my mind.

yeah I missed those days... so ended up starting up again.. I just don-t remember what the implication was that I put that cig back in my mouth... *shrugs* oh well.
ive quit loads of times. lol. the natural high is good and all, but sometimes you just crave real bad, but the craving does go. its best to stop. ill join u soon.

How to quit smoking (temporarily)? -

My mom heavily believes I smoke, and I want to relieve her of that feeling by quitting for a while, and only smoking weed here - there, but I want to know how to avoid cigarette or black - mild cravings so that I-m down to smoking one at least one a week or every couple weeks without using a patch.
Cold turkey. That-s how i did it at first but i like smokin so i do it still. just replace it with something else. all those patches and gums are expensive. get a e cigarette.
There are many well known medicinal products for this purpose but almost all have the side effect of TOLERANCE - DEPENDENCE...

So,

The best way is to REDUCE THE DAILY INTAKE SLOWLY....
for example, if U smoke 5 cigarettes a day then reduce it to 4 - the other day to 3 - then to 2 cigarettes.
Also you should use Paracetamol tablets to avoid the craving pain in the body.
whenever there is an urge to smoke....eat some citrus fruit like orange or banana.
Add green tea to your routine.

..................Praying for your Health - Success.......................
Simple

Mind over matter

Works every time
I chewed Nicorette gum and it worked.

What is the best way to quit smoking marijuana? -

What is the best way for someone with either prescribed or immediate access to marijuana to quit using?
the only way is to just stop. there isn-t like a patch or gum you can use like for cigarettes.... :) if you can, remove yourself from the access... constant temptation will only make it more difficult. will power. that-s all.
STOP BUYING IT

if i really need to take a -breather- (lol im so punny), i will just finish my current stash, and then just not pick up again. i find that if its out of sight, its out of mind (i.e. if i had chron, id end up smoking it, but if i didnt, i wouldnt even think about it

it you have the desire to stop it shouldn-t be a problem, because it is not physically addictive.
Since marijuana is NOT physically addictive, only sheer will power can get you to quit.

Try being poor :) Worked for me.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
Don-t make a purchase of either. Avoid friends that use and circumstances where you will want to use.
eat a lot of beef jerky!!!!!!!!!!!
Just lay it down and walk away. You-ll be cranky for a few days, but you-ll get the desire out in a week of not smoking.
Marijuana is not an addictive substance.

If you find yourself addicted, it is a mental addiction- not physical.

Sorting out the troubles within yourself will be the only sure cure to your -addiction-.

It is very possible if you sort this out, in the future you could be using marijuana responsibly.
Jail.... no access and consequences.

I-ve found links before on this, but can-t track them down now that I actually want to look at them, LOL! I remember seeing info on how soon you notice an improvement in your breathing, how soon your stamina improves, how long until you reduce your risk for diseases etc.

Anyone have any links with this info? Thanks!

It been 24 hours that i decided to quit smoking and why food taste different when i eat ? -

Ok this is my second attempt to stop smoking and i want it to be for good.Today when i ate breakfast , it tasted different and now i-m eating supper and i don-t know what to do when i really want to smoke. So far it-s been ok... Any suggestions ? Why my food taste different ?
your taste buds and sense of smell are waking up. using tobacco causes you to be less able to taste and smell, so when you stop smoking, you actually get the real taste and smell of your food.
if you really want to quit and you don-t know what to do with the craving after a meal, you can go for a walk, do the dishes, do anything to keep your mind occupied. If you cannot beat the craving ask your doctor about Chantix, my son quit a month ago, and using Chantix, he is smoke free still.

I woke up wanting to quit smoking, How can I make the next few days bearable? -

Thanks ahead!
keep busy, have a full couple days planned the more you do the less time you think about it.. Chew gum and talk to a doc about nicotine gum or patches as they are quite helpful when trying to quit.
Whatever you do don-t drink :P
Great question!

I am 35 years old. I started smoking at 16 and finally quit last year. It was the hardest thing I have ever done.

I woke up and threw away my full pack of smokes because I was hacking up yellow gunk from my lungs. It completely grossed me out. I got through the first few weeks by doing the following:

I got up earlier for work and started my first day as a non-smoker going for a brisk walk around my block..
Every time I wanted a cigerette, I drank a full 8 oz glass of water.
I bought gum and chewed lots of gum and I kept snacking on carrots, celery sticks and other healthy stuff.(you have to fulfill your hand to mouth movements)- to simulate the hand to mouth when you have a cigerette and you-re going to take a puff.

I got headaches so I took aspirin, but no matter how bad it was the first few weeks, my will power was stronger and I DID NOT give in to temptation/. I have not smoked in over 1 year and now I do not even crave it. I continued to work out and now I am running 5 miles a day and going to the gym 3 times a week. I am in great shape and looke way better than I did in my late 20-s.

To quit smoking is very hard but not impossible, it takes lots and lots of will power!
good for you. chew lots of gum and keep yourself busy
I quit smoking 2 years ago. A friend had a heart attack and his doctor told him -I know you will cheat on the diet but don-t ever , ever, ever pick up another cigarette-. Those words really struck a nerve. That was how I was able to quit cold turkey and never go back. I gained weight but thats another show. Good Luck!!!!!
keep busy, find something to fill your time, - get addicted to something good.
Suck on Tootsie Pops. Or cut a straw in half and keep it in your hand or suck on it from time to time.

HELP!! How did you quit smoking? -

Any suggestions please. I am trying my hardest because I have a baby on the way (my wife) and I have got to quit!
I would firstly suggest that you stop thinking of quitting smoking as a difficult thing, unfortunately we now have an anti-smoking culture, people think of smokers as some great evil rather than victims of an addiction they do not choose to suffer from. This culture has influenced how we approach quitting, people think if smokers continue to suffer in order to smoke then they must enjoy smoking thus quitting will deprive them of something so will be difficult, when logically the fact smokers suffer should make quitting easier. There are actually laws and policies in place so methods that don-t require willpower are restricted, it-s believed huge willpower must be required to break away from smoking, being told this is hardly motivation to quit! It-s less about willpower, more about understanding the nature of the addition to overcome it.

I-d recommend EASYWAY, sure it sounds like some lame form of self-help, I suppose it is, however it has a - 90% success rate - and once quit with Easyway very few go back, I-ve yet to meet someone who didn-t agree that this was the best method they had found. Easyway like it says is -easy- as there is no willpower required, there is no suffering weight gain or bad moods after quitting, and no constant longing for a cigarette, instead you feel positive from the first day you quit. The method works by dealing with the mental addiction rather than the chemical, after all smokers can go all night without being woken up by cravings, nicotine may be highly addictive but the withdrawals and cravings are minute, it-s all mental. A lot of it is really common sense but it-s that common sense that the addiction cancels out, sure you know it will kill you and it costs a fortune but you still continue, that darn addiction is overriding your own brain. Easyway program kicks that addictions grasp on your logic and deprograms the brainwashing about quitting being difficult or social dependancy on having a cigarette in your hand, you can then quit successfully and happily without and ill effects or feeling deprived of your cigarettes. The course comes in different forms, you can by books from Amazon used or new from another seller for practically nothing, I tend to buy copies for £3-£4 to give away, the books also give you a 20% discount from the clinics. The clinics are the main program, they cost around £220 but they offer a full money back guarentee and you can go back as often as you need to, the books contain the same information as the clinics but the books are in a different format and without the one-to-one support.
http://www.allencarrseasyway.com

There are of course other methods, tips to help you quit, most are about as much use as, well, as continuing to smoke is to your health. Sure some methods work for some people, it-s just luck to find one that works for you...no, strike that, with the right mental attitude anything can work, thus it is luck to be able to find that mental attitude because heaven knows it can be years between attempts to quit.

If you go cold turkey then I recommend coffee as it feeds your bodies addition to caffeine so gets rid of the caffeine cravings which in turn takes the edge off nicotine cravings, the bitterness puts you off smoking, and coffee is good for helping clear all that junk that will be coming off your lungs – don-t try this if you-re used to a smoke on your coffee break. Avoid quitting with friends, if one of you fails then it just gives you an excuse to stop trying too, by all means find a local support group with other smokers trying to quit to give you some support. If you find yourself laying in bed reflecting on how much you want to quit then get up and write it down because in the morning you are sure to forget those thoughts and feelings.

There is nicotine replacement, there are various nicotine replacement methods, lozenges, patches, gum, inhalator, these are expensive buy try discount stores as these sometimes stock them cheap, or if you live in the UK you can get them for free on the NHS. Although be warned as on the NHS you have to go to smoking clinics, they control the doses and if you fail you have to wait another six months before you can try again, and in reality once you fail if you don-t try again right away it can take years before you-re in that mindset again. There are various drugs such as Zyban which act on your brain to help stop the cravings, you start them a few weeks before you want to quit smoking to help ease off the cravings. My friend-s parents used one of these drugs, they were actually disgusted by cigarettes so much after using these drugs that his father threw up at the mere smell of his cigarette tin. You can get this on the NHS in the UK, again if you fail you have to wait another six months before you can try again, some doctors may not prescribe it as there are some side effects.

Other methods include the mouthwash, this is otherwise known as evil juice of doom, it is like the bad tasting stuff you put on your nails to stop you biting them, you use this sprayed onto your tounge so when you smoke it makes it taste disgusting. Herbal cigarettes are totally great as they keep your mouth and hands busy, they look like normal cigarettes although are lighter and don-t contain the million or so additives of normal cigarettes that would probably kill you faster than the tobacco itself. The problem is that being a smoker your sense of smell would likely be a little off, when smoking around other people they will soon make you aware that these herbal cigarettes smell like excrement.

I have known friends to quit by using Chantix. If you are uninsured, and underpaid, the company may provide you with assistance. I got mine for free, but have yet to start it. I am waiting until we move (soon) so I am not in a home that smells like cigarette smoke. I-m afraid it will tempt me or smell really bad after quitting.
My Dr. told me not to quit. Quitting causes stress and will harm the baby. So I cut back to 5-7 a day. The result. 3 pregnancies, 3 big and healthy babies. All because I listened to my Dr. His advice benefited my children.

How can I help my husband quit smoking? -

He just spent the night in the hospital and he is only 34! I want to be supportive but firm because he is having major heart problems. He almost had a stroke. I understand he is under a lot of stress, and he wants a cig more now than ever (even though he is trying to quit) Any suggestions?
This is so difficult, he really needs to want to stop smoking. If that want and need are not there then there really is no point in trying to give up. In fact if he is under undue stress at the moment, now might not be the best time. Stress and anxiety can trigger heart related problems, so giving up the cigs now maybe worse for him!
Wait till things have calmed down, may be take a vacation, relax together, let him smoke during that time with the knowledge that when you get back he will give up. Go cold turkey, thats the best way. Its hell for the first 10 days and then you really don-t miss it at all, even when you are having a drink, eating a meal or talking on the telephone. good luck
try wellbutrin. also known as zyban. It will definately get rid of the nic-fits.
In addition to the wellbutrin you may want to pick up a book that will not only help with the smoking but that will also help with the stress. The Sedona Method.

Available at :
http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/books?…

actually thats my prob too!
try to visit this site and email it to your husband...
http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco.
It sounds like the stressful life is what needs to go more than the smoking. Sell the big house and get rid of the fleet of SUVs. Don-t worry about whether you can afford Dartmouth for the kids; if they are bright and talented, they will make their way in the world without the silver spoon. Opt for a lifestyle that will not kill him. Maybe the best thing you can do to help your husband is to have a really productive talk with him about how the two of you need to change some things (perhaps everything) in order to make life a joy instead of a stress mess.

Is it possible to lose weight just after quitting smoking? -

Stopped smoking two weeks ago, back to the gym last week. Is it possible to lose weight with an active weight training routine even though my metabolism is slowing down? Thanks.
You are doing wonders for your body by not smoking. When they say smoking keeps you skinny, that is a myth. It keeps your lungs black is what it does. It is very possible to lose weight with exercise and eating healthy, in fact you will feel much better! I suggest you buy sugarfree gum so when you crave nicotine, you can chew on it, because they say people gain weight when they quit not from not smoking cigs, but because they buy candy and eat candy constantly.

You are doing yourself a favor! Be proud that you are one step closer to a healthier lifestyle!

Please answer mine?

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Do not starve your self(it never works, although that-s the first thought that crosses anyone-s mind when thinking to lose weight)Drink lots of water. Your body needs sufficient water to burn fat and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.Eat healthy, drink lots of water, have enough sleep and exercise. This will give you a higher chance of losing weight and improving your health, which would result to a new, healthier you.

Here-s some other quick tips for you:

* Do not skip meals. Skipping meals slicks the body into slowing down the metabolism, attempting to conserve calories during a period where limited fats and fuel are available. Remember that eating increases the metabolism.

* Learn how to make the family favorite recipes and make sure that fats, salt, and sugar are cut out. Substitute non-fat yogurt for cream, stir-fry without oil and use herbs and spices instead of salt to taste.

* As much as possible do not remove the skins of fruits and vegetables since most of the nutrients are concentrated under the skin.

* One of the best sources of vegetable protein is from soya beans or tofu. All legumes provide some protein, so include lentils, lima beans etc into casseroles and soups.

* Remove fat by dropping ice cubes into the baking tray. Fat will stick to the ice cubes.

If you have started losing weight, just remember it-s a question of will. Keep doing what your-re doing, stay away from junk food and sodas, and you will feel more healthier and alive than never before.
Have you tried fasting for a couple of days? I wanted to do it right and still get nutrients so I used the 2-Day Fasting Formula from Beachbody and lost about 9 pounds. I am sure everyone has different results but I tried it and it worked for me. By allowing your body to stop breaking down food for a day or two, your metabolism can get caught up so it is able to begin burning off stored fat.

They say that theses are the key benefits for using their fasting formula:
? Helps reduce cravings and burn off hard-to-lose fat
? Supports total-body cleansing
? Supports and invigorates the body’s natural energy production
? Supports increased weight loss from your fitness routine
? Available in Chocolate and Vanilla

Yes it is possible. I was in the same situation not too long ago. I stopped smoking awhile ago and I was worried about the same thing. If you stay active and eat within reason you shouldn-t gain too much weight. You might not even gain weight at all. I actually lost weight. I was worried about gaining weight as a result of quitting so I started exercising more than I had been and I changed up my diet. I-m about 10 pounds less than when I was smoking. It helps to just build up a habit of working out regularly and eating healthy regularly. I use
http://www.fitclick.com
to track my workouts and diets. My friends and I use the site and we keep each other motivated.
The best way to lose wight (also the hardest way) is to do lots of exercise and eat not much, mainly carbohydrates (flour bread pasta ect) lay of the sugar and fatty foods, and do exercise! 5 mins every hour will do it.
count calories and keep them at 1200-1500 a day. your a bit heavier so maybe start of THE MOST at 1800. dont drink anything but water, a lot of unknown calories come from drinks.

fill up on fruits and veggies!
eat very healthy.
can-t you go walking at all? thats like working out but not vigorous. if you are allowed to do that i would suggest 30m-1hr a day
I heard it is rarely possible to do, since your metabolism drastically slows down when you quit smoking. I smoke and want to quit but I am also trying to lose weight too. I know, it-s hard, isn-t it? sorry, i guess this is a bad answer, but good luck! wish me luck too!
Spices increase your body metabolism and thus help burn fat. Examples: Cumin, Hot pepper, Cayenne peppers, Ginger, Turmeric.

Drink lots of water it helps to increase metabolism.

What is the most effective way to quit smoking? -

Keep in mind, I-ve been smoking for 16 years now. And while you-re at it, how do I keep from gaining a bunch of weight while I-m trying to quit?
stop buying em
1 Do not buy your smoke.
2 If you carry your smoke, don-t carry lighter,
3 if you carry lighter keep them in other room, so that you become lazy to go to other room to get lighter.
4 Don-t drink coffee, smoke always follows coffee,
5 Drink milk or orange juice these two things will not allow smoke to follow.
6. If you can-t understand any of the above advise, Just draw a chair, sit in corner, light up a smoke and think about it.
dont buy cigarettes and stop eating so much
Stop!

If you want it bad enough and if you have faith in yourself you can do it thru willpower.

Detox yourself

its the cheapest method, and it works

My mother and I both quit this way.

cold turkey baby!
good luck!

ps. snack on healthy foods (veggies and fruits)
I-ve heared that if you eat a cigarrette it could allow you to quit. If it makes you sick enough, your mind will associate the cigarette with becoming sick and gagging, and you wont want to touch them. Sometimes this technique works and sometimes it doesn-t. It all depends on how much you want to quit. Try doing some other activites durring times when you would usually smoke. Try chewing gum or something.
Use the patch + do it while away from work ( ie. a vacation )
Has worked for several of my coworkers
Die of lung cancer.
Im not a smoker so maybe I have no business answering your question, but at least 5 ppl I know quit smoking by reading some anti-smoking self help book thats out there and is pretty popular right now. I was thinking someone said it was almost like a self hypnosis book. Anyway apparently it really works, maybe someone else could tell you the name?
Urine Therapy. Seriously, look it up on amazon.com.
Oh its seriously so hard im trying myself. I quit doing drugs, quit eating meat and quit watching tv. This is honestly the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. My best advice is just lose contact with anyone who smokes.
Tie your hands behind your back
smartest thing to ever do.........not start....cause your health is screwed now..and if you do quit---you will gain weight---and if you dont then your lucky but 16 years of smokeing....proble -7years of your life...sorry to break it to you
Cold Turkey..Don-t worry about wait. Walk to miles a day.
the most effective way...Dont buy smokes. Yeah right you say. Well thats most effective...

OR smoke so much it makes you so sick you wont wanna smoke again.

And the gaining weight thing..Dont eat bad foods (junk foods) have carrots and celery sticks ready....You need to replace your BAD habbit with a healty one. So everytime you think you want a smoke something else can take its place. Something you can do everytime. Now there can be different things...like in the house you do one thing in the car you do another...and somthing different at work....think hard you can do it if you really want to.
GOOD LUCK
oh and ps...If you smoke full flavor dont go to medium light or ultra lights...they have more nicoten FOR REAL
I smoked for 15 years and I got hypnotized. There is a little weight gain involved because you body will not be dehydrated any longer... It feels wonderful! Just exercise and eat right and you won-t have any problems..

My mother smoked for 30+ years and quit about a year before I do (I have been smoke free for a little over 4 years) and she quit cold turkey..... Strong woman I tell ya!
The most effective way is to quit all at once without even getting near a cigarette again, there is no such thing as slowly leaving it or smoking less and less, most of the time you wind up smoking more,in my case it wasn-t the fear of lung cancer or emphesima,my fear was that one day I would wind up damaging my throat and have to use one of those throat gadgets to speak, so after seeing one of those persons using that gadget,I quit and have not touch a cigarette for six years
Okay I did this and it worked for me. Get yourself a midget. Every time you even think about a cigarette this little midget will kick your azz. He will kick your azz so hard your brain will poor out of your ear like soup. Then you will never even think about smoking again.
There might be sevaral methods to do it, but everyone of them should use one ability of your mind:

IMAGINATION

Yes, depending on willpower is always going to set you for failure, because the subconcious mind doesn-t understand that. But constantly imagining what your life would be as a non-smoker will do the trick. Think constantly about how better you-ll feel, how much extra energy you-ll get, how much money you-ll save, etc. Write these down in a piece of paper - -Like I saved $20 this week by not smoking- and keep it in your pocket and read it when you have an urge to smoke.

Worked for me. I quit cold turkey a year ago.
I-ve read the others above, but I definitely feel what your saying as a fellow smoker. I think that it starts in the mind. You have to make-up in your mind that you don-t want to smoke anymore....period. I-ve quit before, but started back up again after 9 months... isn-t that something (I know not very helpful info for you). All I did was really set up in my mind that I didn-t want to do it and really stuck to it. (Mind over matter). I will quit for good. Also, ask God to help you... he will hear your request. Good luck.
start a light workout with cardio like light jogging, jumprope, or even hitting the heavy bag. Also if you drink stop drinking for at least 3 weeks.
I JUST THREW THE PACK AWAY 8 YEARS AGO HAVEN,T SMOKED SINCE WAS HARD FOR A MOUTH
make the decision you want to live healthy and cut down the amount and the strenght of cigs you smoke and join a gym at the same time.set a date to completely stop and do it.if you fail the first time don-t wait and try again.eventually you will do it.good luck.
too combat the weight gain just do cardio activities that both burn calories and give you non-smoker satisfaction.

When quiting it-s most important to feel good about what you are accomplishing on a daily basis BUT never get too confident or this could be the first step towards a relapse.

Keep away form trigger environments for a while, like a friend who smokes, bars and such. Just for a while - and tell them, -be patient while I do this for myself-. They-ll understand
If you have been smoking for 16 years, you are not going to do it cold turkey.

Talk to you doctor about Chantix - a new cessation aid from Pfizer.

http://www.chantix.com/

The reported success rate (20% smokefree after 1 year) is excellent compared to other methods.

You will gain weight - there are metabolic changes that occur. Don-t worry about it. You can lose the weight later after you-re smoke-free.

Keep in mind that it is an addiction, and a very severe one. Expect to suffer when you quit. Don-t let that stop you from trying.

Good luck.
you have to want to make the choice to quit or else all the extrs help crap is for nothing.
try some herbal cigarettes u find in some of the medical shops.

a smoker since 16 years can have a lot of problem to quit. its possible that you may have an constipation problem if you do.

the trick here to quit smoking shud be..try to develop an negative image of an cigarette rather than an life saver from tensions. once you start detesting it you wil stop. or else try to divert the habit. each time you feel like smoking do something else, like chewing gum or something like that which is relatively less dangerous than smoking. But keep it in mind that you have to have an mammoth of an will power to do this sir. Can you ?

and there is a saying here in india..that if you quit smoking, do it after telling all the people around your life. it makes them to remind you not to smoke or they will not smoke in front of you.

all the best.
take the patch or the gum and get into a support group where they talk about stop smoking. Excercising.
55% or more (guessing) of people who use a support program are more likely to quit.
I think the patch is the best way. Snack on sugar free candy.
I will CURE you right here and now!
I have seriously ATTEMPTED to be hooked on tabacco, gin and some powdery fun in Peru!
I consider myself a MAD SCIENTIST in those cases however, I have never been HOOKED on anything.
Tell yourself right now, -I can do what I want to do!-
List those things you ABUSE right now like the cigs or whatever.
Tell yourself, -I am unique and DON-T fall into the mind game of I am like everyone and I am addicted or needy etc...
Next, never say NEVER again, just start tomorrow by putting a pack of cigs in the freezer. You will smoke so little in the next few days, you will HAVE to keep them in there to keep them from going stale.
Now, just for KICKS, see how long it takes to truly (inside yourself) feel the desire or desperation for a smoke. Force the warrior inside you to take over and impress yourself with how little EVERYONE-s TYPICAL weakness really doesn-t get hold of you, cause your braver and stronger than all the rest.
The longer you DON-t have a cig, the more you will deserve a reward puff or reward cig.
Don-t tell everyone what your up to, just do it for a few days, even a week and then mention it.
Continue this (challenging game) with a no big deal attitude.
Do you know your lungs clear out and are like re-born, merely WEEKS after quiting? They do!
When they feel pretty good, take a bike ride or a long walk near a stream. Another gift you give yourself for being brave and tough!
You can pick days, weeks or months to simply say to yourself, -I can do anything I want, not smoke, smoke or climb a tree, but non of it is an addiction!
Simply put, you have permission to tolerate mysery or not tolerate mysery cause mysery is OPTIONAL!
Our worst downfall is believing we are all made up of the same downfalls as ever critter who ALSO owns a face!
Don-t be racist! Be your own thinker and your own champion and that isn-t just pep talk ****! Its reality. We have the keys to the freaken car, lets stop talking about it and cruise that puppy and even win a few drag races with it!
There, if you read this as a warrior and NOT as a mediocrity, you KNOW in your heart you just got over an addiction! (We both know addictions don-t really exist, only a concept called addiction!)
Congrats you crazy kid! Get that bike ready, cause two rides a week and tons of fruit for the cravings of food are gona tone your ***, not put wieght on it! You knew that too, didn-t you??!!
the most effective way? Cold Turkey, throw away your cigarettes right now and never smoke again. it is the hardest way but, it is the most effective.
The only thing that-s going to help you quit is: quit cold turkey and will power. If you do quit, break out the bag of sugar free gum - candy. And again, will power to keep yourself from eating.

So my answer is COLD TURKEY - WILL POWER is the most effective way to quit smoking.

And thats all I have to say about that!

It`s been two weeks since i quit smoking.If I smoke a joint,will nicotine cravings start 4m scratch?Is it safe -

therer is no nicotine in reffer unless you are rolling it up to make a -blunt- but it does seem to trigger a craving for a Newport after I smoke a -J-. Your nicotine receptors usually get triggered by habits that created you to smoke such as after eating, drinking your morning coffee etc, so if you were used to smoking after blazing up it could very well trigger the desire for a cigarette do to the habit that you did that before.

I quit smoking cigerettes and was still smoking herb everyday just didnt smoke the cigs
They totally will. If you have a j after trying to quit the tobacco, it will just make you crave a cig. Good on you for quitting the smoking, stay away from j-s with baccy in them and you-ll be alright! Have a bong or weed with no tobacco.
One or the other!
It might if you typically smoke a joint then have a cigarette...it would be association....like people who smoke when they drink...if they have a drink they crave a cigarette.
yes it triggers ur old habits friends of mine who dont smoke cigarettes want to smoke a cigarette after smoking a joint etc. its hard enough to quit so dont do anything that will want u to smoke for awhile. or tell ur friends dont let u smoke a cigarette after u smoke a joint.

Options to quit smoking? -

Options to quit smoking? -

I-m going to try to quit smoking again (third times a charm). I have tried cold turkey and failed miserably. I tried the patch and it worked great while I was using it but then became dependant. When I do try to quit though, I become uncontrolably and painfully emotional, which is bad enough if not for the physical symptoms of quitting as well. So I have decided I will need professional medical help on this one, but I would like to know what to expect and what options I have for medications or other methods of quitting.
There are MANY options, there are patches and pills, inhalers and chewing gum. There are nicotine replacement therapies and antidepressants. There are many nonpharmacological therapies as well. I can-t even begin to cover all of the options here, and there is no one that works best, different methods seem to work better for different people, and many have a hard time no matter what they do. Do go to your doctor and talk to him about the options, he-s in a much better position to know what may be best for you than anyone on yahoo answers, but don-t get discouraged, I have been told (and I can-t say how accurate this statistic is, but it seems to be at least in the right direction) that the average smoker who sucessfully quits relapses 6-7 times before finally stopping for good, not being able to stop after trying once doesn-t mean you won-t ever be able to.
Just an answer from a quitter after 35 years smoking and having my dear husband of 35 years die of lung cancer while I watched and cared for him, as I had another cigarette!
Believe me when I say I know exactly what you-re going through and I know exactly what I-m talking about!!

Doesn-t matter what you do, how you do it or who tells you what to do. None of it will work until you quit saying -I-m gonna TRY to quit smoking AGAIN-.

When you -try-, that leaves you an -out- for when you fail. You can always say, -oh well, I TRIED-.

Nothing works until you really make up your mind to. I mean you have absolutely no choice left but to quit and you-ll be damned if you don-t make it work!!!!

You go into it with the knowledge you are going to want a cig.
You go into it with the knowledge that when you want a cig. you will not dwell on it. If you dwell on it you will make
yourself miserable.

The urge passes in less than a minute if you allow it. If you don-t, then it will last all day! And you-re doing it to yourself.

Like with any addiction....drugs....alcohol, etc. You have to make a lifestyle change. You can-t continue the same ole, same ole and expect to succeed.

If you are an alcoholic, you don-t go into a bar and expect to not drink!!!! You don-t hang out with the same drinking buddies and expect to not want to drink.

You shower, shower, shower, shower!!!!!!
You wash EVERYTHING you wear, even it it was clean in the drawers or hanging in the closet. The smoke in the house clings to everything, clean or dirty!!

You shampoo the carpets, furniture, inside of the car.
You shower, shower, shower. You will stink for about 3-4 days. Drink lots of water. You try all different deodorants.....nothing helps. Shower, shower, shower.

If you used to light up when on the phone, do NOT talk on the phone only if you absolutely HAVE to for about 2 weeks.
Tell your friends ahead of time. After a meal can be rough. Plan ahead of time to do something after a meal to take the place of that cig. Maybe a jog, walk, read your bible for 15 minutes......something different.

Do NOT have time on your hands. With all the scrubbing you have to do, you should drop into bed exhausted and every minute of the day should be filled.

You may not notice the smell of smoke in your house or car. Believe me, it-s there and it-s telling your subconscious that you want that cigarette. Thus, the urge will come. That is why you have to begin new....fresh. You can-t -cover up the smell with sprays.

I-m telling you. After 35 years of trying to quit using everything at my disposal to succeed and failing, the above strategies were the only thing that worked for me and they stand to reason. But even still, these won-t work unless you-ve made your mind up that there is no going back.

Also, the urges subside tremendously after 3 days. They still come but not like the first 3 days. Live one hour at a time, then one day at a time. Then know for the rest of your life, there will be times when the urges hit and you just have to laugh at yourself and say, -not on your life!!!- The urge passes quickly and you go about your life.

Always remember: ONE CIGARETTE IS TOO MANY, AND 1000 CIG. ARE NOT ENOUGH! Never, never, never, out of curiosity do you pick up another cigarette as long as you live thinking you can -put it back down again-. It doesn-t work that way. That one cigarette will never be enough, I promise you. It-s a wicked joke to make you think you can just try one.

I-m telling you, though, you absolutely cannot hang around those who smoke. If they cannot understand that then they are not your friend. Stay away from all smoke!

Cold turkey is the only method. Any of those patches, gum and pills just keep the nicotine in your system longer and you still have that physical addiction to quit and it won-t work.

Good luck, remember to pray and shower, shower, shower!!
Smile
I am an RN
you-re a strong woman.
i dont smoke but i feel for ya!
how about. everytime youu want a cig. youu just
pick up a cinnamon candy =)

it works. sounds silly but it does.

and chew cinnamon gum too!
Good for you.......I-m still smoking (I quit for 2 years once) ....when I DID quit, I made sure i had a pack in m purse just in case but I have not been mentally capable lately. I hope you can do it though.....a lot of it is in the mind.
oh I hear ya there. I-m going to try chantix- its a prescription you get from your Dr. it doesn-t contain any nicotine. I-ve heard it works well- when you start taking it you smoke for a week then quit but if you happen to slip up and smoke- continue the pills don-t stop. I-m not sure about the moodiness that goes along with quitting but you can talk to your Dr about that also maybe he/she can give you some suggestions. Good luck!
Couldn-t believe it would work BUT after smoking 30 yrs. 1/2 pack a day, problems with chronic bronchitis, copd... my specialist prescribed CHANTIX. IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM!

It acts on blocking the -high-, good Dopamine effect with every drag. So after a couple of days, the Thrill was gone and i didn-t want to spend five bucks on a stink weed. But there are still withdrawal symptoms to deal with. Check with your Doc and you can also get a rebate.
you are just a weak person and there is no help for that, sorry . . really i am.
Take green tea pills every morning and afternoon...it helps detox your body and it will remove the want to for a cigarette..i have been quit for 5 months now...green tea will help you clean your lungs out and kidneys. Good Luck!
i think there-s a nicotine gum, that could help because gum tends to help control stress anyway, and it would have the nicotine in it for ur nicotine boost.
good for you for wanting to quit, and seeking medical help when other times you tried it didn-t work. a therapist could maybe help you too, for the whole emotional factor of it all.

don-t listen to the 4 answers above me, they are just being idiots.
good luck!
I have quit a few times I am currently a non smoker. One of the times I quit I was on well butrion which is basically an antidepressant I do think that it helped. The last time I quit smoking I got really sick and the though of a cigarette was awful and I never went back. Good Luck to you it is the best thing you can do for yourself!
chantix is so bad ***....it has made quiting so easy for me this time
Just stop!
vaporize marijuana instead, no smoke just vapor!
you know i tryed all kinds of stuff, i tried to quite about 9 times befor it works, what ended up happening was cold turky, but when i moved, so it broke up my driving/ porch habits.
good luck!
Cold Turkey, patch, nicorette gum, something else to chew on, weening. It is hard to quit, and it takes a lot of work.
Perhaps you might have to join a Quit Smoking Clinic.
pick up marijuana

What is the most effective way to quit smoking? -

I know cold turkey is obviously effective but the withdrawl symptoms are a little much. I-ve heard of pills, patches, and gums. Which one worked best for you or someone you know?
A prescription called Chantix. I was a 3 pack a day smoker for 45 years. My doctor prescribed it for me because my emphysema has gotten worse. I have tried everything and nothing except the Chantix has worked. It took 2 weeks before it affected my nicotine cravings. I have been smoke free for 3 months.
Fall in love with someone who cant stand smoking, worked for me. Also keep telling yourself all of the cons of smoking, Have you ever seen an older person and you could just tell from their appearance that they smoke? Do you want to have premature wrinkling and reek of tobacco smoke?
Sadly lung cancer works pretty effectively.

Either patches or gum depending on whether or not you like chewing gum. I doubt there-s much difference between them in effectiveness so much would depend on availability, your personality and also, I guess how much you smoke at present. I-m sure a pharmasist would give you better advice than anyone here on Y!A.
Try a Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking-.
cold turkey worked for me. I tried the gum and it didn-t work because I was just substituting nicotene from cigarettes with nicotene in a different form. I figured why do that? All I am doing is prolonging my pain. So I just toughed it out and quit cold turkey. The first month was really hard, but after that things got a lot better. I still think about cigarettes every now and then, but the thought goes away so quick it-s like nothing happened.

How to quit smoking if you smoke 20 cigarrates a day? -

How to quit smoking if you smoke 20 cigarrates a day? -

I am smoker having at least 20 cigarettes a day. Can anybody suggest an easy remedy to get rid off?
1. Daily, mentally take oath that i will not smoke for to day.
2. Leave it for the memory of the person to whom your affection is more.
3. Always keep one to two kabak sugar in mouth.
These are the very simple way to leave that type of bed habbits.
I smoked for 20+ years and tried many times to quit -- the way I did it, and I-ve heard it is not the correct way, but it worked for me. I cut back slowly. I gave up my morning cigarettes and made myself wait until lunch time to have a cigarette. It was difficult, but knowing I could have a cigarette at lunch got me through the morning. Then I gave up afternoon cigarettes and waited until evening. Then, finally gave up those evening cigarettes. This probably took about 6 months to accomplish but I quit 11 years ago and have not gone back to smoking. It was very, very difficult, but you will feel absolutely fantastic once you know you-ve smoked your last cigarette. Good luck to you.
I am not a smoker, but I found this video for people trying to quit.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/sections…

My Grandfather was a smoker most of his life. His brother got Lung Cancer (also smoked most of his life), and after seeing him one time in the hospital he quit cold turkey. Although he quit, I think the damage was done and he ended up getting Lung Cancer himself a few years later, which took him pretty quick.

Good Luck
I would follow the advise already given. Back off and slow down and ease off them. You didn-t start smoking in a day or even a week, so just turn it around. That is what I am trying to do. Anything that-s good is hard somethings to do. But in the end you will be healthier.

Best of luck to you.
I am praying for you that god help you to quit this bad habit.
Every morning awake up time - evening bed time 10 minutes say that;
Smoking is not good for me.I will quit smoking.Ican do it . Please help me god.
You can get this one thing I heard of for free, or you can even make it at home. It is called willpower and it works wonders, you should try it. It will make you quit if you use it right.
Bet with ur friend that u won-t for a week (or)
Chew a gum (or)
Always have a Chocolate in your mouth.(or)
If u wanna be safe smoking, go for electronic cigars which are now readily available in stores

Always try cold turkey first. It-s cheap (free) and fast. If that doesn-t work, try gradually cutting back. If THAT doesn-t work, then join a support group and buy some niccorette.
read allan carrs easy way to stop smoking, i have stopped 2 months now from reading that book
don-t buy in packs and also don-t carry coins which will tempt u to buy cigars

Has anyone succesfully quit smoking recently? How did you do it and what were your side affects? -

I have smoked for ten years, I really want to quit. I have a great support system but I am a little affraid of going cold turkey. Is that the best way? anyone have any tips that have quit recently?
I tried to cut back to 15 then 10 then 5 then 1 and had a car wreck, so back to 20. Honestly, I just decided to keep my money, bought some of the nicotine gum (Nicorette) and instead of chewing 4-6 pieces daily, only chewed 3. Then down to 1, then I switched to Extra bubble gum (needed the activity of bubbles!). It-s been over 3 years, and whenever anyone -needs- cigarettes, I offer gum. Lectures are tempting, but gum is effective, eve if it tastes horrible...Get moving, COPD sets in fast, and keeps growing after you quit, so don-t waste any more time.
my uncle is a hypnotherapist, and he suggested, change the way you input the info.
INFO- quit smoking, how about becoming a non-smoker?
if you think you need 2 week-s to stop, give your self a month.
Every time you grab a smoke tell yourself;
- On 10/01/2007 I WILL be a NON-smoker-
I was raised not to be a QUIT-ER
Quit after fifty years of non-filters. The key is your statement, -I really want to quit- if true then just do it. There are no side affects.
I quit 5 months ago.

The best way to quit is the one that works for you.

Check out Quit Assist,
http://www.philipmorrisusa.com/en/quitas…
which has a great deal of information about quitting.

Take the Why Do I Smoke Quiz at
http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/…
to identify what triggers your smoking.

Make an appointment with your doctor to determine what smoking cessation aids, if any, would work best for you.

Join a support group. Yahoo has 3 groups. My favorite is Nicotine Busters. They have a wealth of information about quitting and provide great support.

The best of luck to you!!!
A couple of my freinds use nicotine patches to take the edge off.
They say if you can get through the first 3 days without smoking it gets easier from then on.
Except stay away from other smokers becuase you will crave it again just smelling the smoke.
Very wise choice to quit. Smoking hardens your arteries and sets you up for a heart attack. It takes 10 more years for your arteries to become fully elastic again. Best to start now and throw away the cigarettes.
I smoked 9 years and constantly had colds. I didn-t quit recently but I never used anything to help me. I just got sick of being sick!

I didn-t even finish my pack of cigarettes like most do. If you are serious. Break all the rest of them in the pack. Empty all ash trays and any place you can find a butt to smoke. wash and air out all places you use to smoke. And avoid any places with smokers for a few weeks. Keep gum near by. And remember every MINUTE you stop smoking your lungs are healing. You can-t just have ONE cigarette like an Obese person on a diet just can-t have ONE cookie. It will cause a reaction. Keep reminding yourself that your lungs are healing everyday. Don-t reverse the hard work your doing to making them healthy again!!! You can do it. After two weeks you will walk by a smoker and the smell will make you sick. Only because you then will realize how you smelled to others. Soon one day will be three days will be three weeks three months three years and then you can be like me and ex smoker for 13 years. Keep on Keeping on!
you shortly cut down little by little.

Quit smoking 6 weeks ago, why do I want one so bad right now? -

Quit smoking 6 weeks ago, why do I want one so bad right now? -

I-ve been doing well, but suddenly I want one so bad. It-s like I feel I need the reward I used to feel from smoking. This is the strongest urge I-ve had since I quit. I seem to be becoming fixated on it. I-ve also been eating alot, but exercising it off so my weight has been fairly stable at least. Any advice is appreciated.
You will find times when you hit this brick wall, find a way around it. Congrats on looking for another way to deal with it by asking your internet family. The urge will pass, try to do something to occupy your mind for a little while. Do a few minutes of exercise. Put a piece of candy in your mouth to draw the attention away from the craving. Figure out what works for you so you are prepared if it happens again. Goodluck and stay strong.
The Surgeon General-s reports from both 1964 and a subsequent one from 1988 stated clearly that nicotine and heroin are of equal addictive strength. In short...anyone using either is essentially an addict.
You are a recovering addict...plain and simple. The government and businesses make SO much money in SO many ways from the tobacco business and its -parasite- industries that they DO NOT want anyone to recognize their addiction.
They expect you to look at the guy with the needle in his arm, or the crack pipe and say to yourself -What a lowlife addict.-....but they need you to view yourself as a -smoker-. This euphemism -smoker- helps keep the nicotine addicts stupid...and addicted....generation after generation after generation....so the money keeps rolling in year after year after year...
When you smoke the nicoteine (sp? lol) wakes up your pleasure receptors in your brain, and that-s why it feels like a reward. I-m not sure what advice to give you as I have never quit because I-m so weak lol. Maybe talk to your doctor about getting medication or try the patch for a while?
When you deprive your body of nicoteine the receptors go crazy because they want their high.
Good luck.
it-s possible that you had a lapse and are just in a state of mind when you used to normally have a cigarette to calm you down. try occupying yourself with something to get your mind off of it
Just think about all the money you are saving by not smoking. Say you smoke 1 carton a week. Avg price in Georgia is $29. 29x4=$116 saved weekly! 116x52=$6032 a year saved!

My husband has decided to quit smoking! What can I do to help? -

My husband has decided to quit smoking! What can I do to help? -

I understand that this will probably be a very trying time for him. I want to make it easier on him, not drive him crazy! Ex-smokers, what did your spouses do that was helpful/harmful?
Clinical studies have shown that people with good support systems have better quit rates than others who do not. It is great that you are there to support him through this very tough time. Your help could be just the thing to help him quit!

I think one of the best things you can do for him during this time is give him positive reinforcement. You can do this by telling him you are proud of him for trying to quit and doing so often. Also, he will have to stay busy when he has cravings. It-s good to become active during these times and you could do things with him such as go for a walk, play a game, or just get out and do something.

You could also help him figure out a plan for how he can stop. It-s good to choose a quit date. Also to help him figure out what his triggers are. Some people like smoking in their cars, others right after they eat a meal, etc. Helping him figure out when his top times to smoke are and helping him form a plan of how to avoid it and or combat it could be invaluable.

There are also many options for nicotine replacement therapy and some prescriptions options as well. Your best contribution though is probably in the way of support and understanding. Also a little of forgiveness for the inevitable grouchiness the first few days! Goodluck to you both!
After smoking for 27 years, I found that the -Nicotrol Inhaler- was the most valuable tool to help break the smoking habit.

With this, you would get the nicotine that you physically and mentally craved, however it was void of all of the other gases and carinogens that cigarettes contain. Plus it gave the hands something to do to compensate for the loss of the cigarette. (It-s like holding a cigarette)

Even though you do get slightly addicted to the nicotine of the Nicotrol Inhaler, it-s very easy to quit at this point.

The only thing though--this requres a prescription from your doctor.

Good luck to, both, you and your husband!!

Vaccine to quit smoking? -

I heard that there is a vaccine out that helps you quit smoking. Is this true? Do the doctors have it yet?
i don-t know but if there is let me know.
You don-t need a vaccine. You need will-power and a few visits with people with emphysema or lung cancer.
contact your doctor and see if you can get a look at cancerous lungs from tobacco, that helped me quit. Immediately!

After you quit smoking, when does your body start to feel better? -

After you quit smoking, when does your body start to feel better? -

I quit smoking 24 days ago and I don-t physically feel any better. I even started walking 30 min a day and still don-t feel better.
I smoked for 17 years, 1 to two packs a day. I was in the Air Force and just barely passed the annual PT test which was a 1-1/2 mile run with a time limit depending on your age. I thought I was going to die after that run and they almost called an ambulance for me. I quit smoking and the following year I breezed through the test. It took nearly two years before I no longer felt that urge to reach for a smoke. If you think about your ability to do physical tasks that task your breathing, before quitting and currently, I think you-ll notice a gradual improvement every few weeks. Keep at it. The temptation to restart is there for a year or two. It-s just a matter of whether you really want to give yourself and those around you a better environment and healthy life or not. one of my sisters wouldn-t stop smoking and died of lung cancer three years ago. She-s the only person in our family to have lung cancer. All the rest either never smoked or quit years ago.
GOOD LUCK
At least it stopped stinking straight away!
Keep it up! :)
I started feeling better within a day or so. The first thing my body did was hack up a bunch of mucous out of my lungs. Did you go through that stage? Maybe some Mucinex will loosen up that garbage and let you get rid of it.
Consult your doctor. Whatever you do, don-t start smoking again!!! 24 days is great!! Great job!! Congrats on a healthier life!
It-s not an overnight turn of events that will make you feel better all of a sudden. One thing I noticed that my lung capacity increased after a few months. I could do flights of stairs and still have lots of energy and strength to keep going. I wouldn-t look for big differences, it-s the small ones that add up to make your overall health better. And btw, congratulations on quitting. I know it-s hard. My one year anniversary is in 2 days, and I still think about smoking at times, but I-m very happy I-ve quit! Keep up the good work, and enjoy the new you!
G
when i quit i felt better immediatly...like 2-3 days without smoking. and i noticed it right away. if you don-t physically feel any better, maybe you should see a dr. and find out if something else is the matter. or...maybe you didn-t smoke enough or smoke for long enough for your body to feel the full effects of being drug down by smoking. i-m notsure. we-re all different so what happens for some might not happen for all.
I have been smoke free for 2 months now, and nicotine has a way of fooling you to believe that it wasn-t that bad for you, because all you get are the cravings at this point. Just remember it is a battle between you and cigs and you are going to win! don-t let the cigarettes win. get the patch to calm your cravings and start an excersize program now!!! I gained 15 lbs and I hate it... almost makes you want to go back to smoking. nicotine also numbs your body, so when you start working out you are going to feel more of the pain. good luck!
that depends on your age, how much you used to smoke and for how many years. you can basically say that it will take your lungs at least 10 years until they get rid of the last chunk of tar.
you should feel getting a little better after a few days, weeks or even month. that really depends on you. maybe it can help you to also chance your eating habits. and, of course, your body has to get over the fact that it won-t have any nicotine anymore...
keep up that walking and stay healthy!
good luck.
Within the first 2 weeks and then it improves rapidly...
I does, I quit 3 months ago it took about 2 to REALLY feel the difference. I went back to smoking (like an ******) for two days and quit again, just after those two days, I felt like I did three months ago---like crap!! Stick it out ITS WORTH IT!!! I-m with right there with you, your not alone.
just drink a glass of water :) all the time u dont feel beter
try eating heather too
I think it depends on how much you were smoking when you quit

My BIL was smoking 3 packs a day, he started feeling better after about a year

I quit a 5 pack a day habit, I started feeling better after 15 months
It-ll probably take a few months. Right now your body-s probably still going through the withdrawl stage. Once you-re over it, it-s AMAZING how much better you-ll feel. I smoked for 13 years and I finally quit about 2 years ago. It did take a while, but I-ve never felt better
My lungs felt better pretty quick. You-re probably still dealing with withdrawel issues. Keep going, it takes a little time. You probably feel a little bit better each day but aren-t realizing it. Then one day you-ll get up and realize you feel a lot better.
It takes a while. I don-t think I felt -normal- until about 6 months after. Hard to tell though, its a gradual process of ridding your body of the toxins.

One thing I did notice a couple weeks in ....waking up in the morning I felt much better, I could breathe and didn-t have the burning lungs.

Its been almost 2 years since I quit and I still have cravings, and still dream about smoking. No way I-ll go back to it though!!!
Hello
In theory your body should feel better immediately as it is not being subject to smoke.

Just congratulate your self you are not adding to global warming :)

Good luck
I never noticed any changes from being smoker then non smoker but I kept it under 10 cigarettes a day, many times less than 6 a day so I would say that is pretty light.
After about 3-4 weeks I felt better and wasn-t going crazy for a smoke anymore.
how long did you smoke before you quit? the damage that smoking has done to your system is cummulative, so the longer you smoked before quitting, the longer it will take for you to -feel better.-

do you notice a difference in your breathing after, say, climbing a flight of stairs (are you less out of breath than before)? does food taste better or more flavorful? pay attention to those small things, as you will notice improvement there first.

also, your body is used to having near constant stimulation of the serotonin hormone processors, and now it is having to produce those -feel good- hormones on its own... it will take a little while for your production to be back at normal rates. give it time...
it takes time. i quit smoking a year ago and i feel great but it-s hard sometimes to compare because it-s not an instant thing. you-r body gradly works all the tar and crap out of your system so it wont happen over night, but it will happen.
I dont think you really feel better...

unless you smoked so much that you were coughing all the time...Perhaps your frame of mind feels better, because, for myself as a former smoker...I always was worried, about what the cigs were doing to my health...and, that I should quit...and, I got tired of trying to find extra change to buy that pack of cig..

its a hard habit to break...it takes about 2 years to really get over it..(for me anyways)...

good luck to you!!!
i did but it-s pretty gradual...what i noticed first was that i could breathe without that gurggling in my chest....and i was happy about not having an addiction and i was happy about not spending all that money on cigarettes....i think i felt empowered that i could quit...that is a good feeling right there....
if you stopped for 24 hrs, you ARE feeling better already. dont worry if you relapse. they say that cutting down doesnt lower the heath risks, good way for the pros to help out huh?1 smoke in like 2 weeks aint bad. smoking really isnt so bad. some ppl just cant control it.cant blame a product for a weak will. if that was the case, alot of other things would be just as bad.
Remember you damaged your body considerably. You will respond and you will heal. It may take awhile, probably no less then 2 months. I smoked for 33 years, quit 10 years ago and it was almost a year before I really felt better. But the last 9 have been great. I am 59 years old my pulse is 50-60 my bp is 130/62. So I do believe it helped. Stick with, please. Don-t go back. Get help if you need it, but don-t go back.
after a few months...u can definietly tell, atleast my friend could
You-ve probably done so much damage to your body that you-ll never feel any better. Not until the day you take your last scratchy, coughing breath and die.

Hope you have new lungs in heaven ...or elsewhere.
took a couple of months for me.
Wait a few days or so, it takes time for your body to adjust to the lack of poisons and chemicals in cigarettes.
I suppose everyone is different. It took me about 6 months.
I-ve heard that about half a year. It depends on how many cigarettes you used to smoke everyday and of course how long.

Wrrrrr - I have to quit smoking as well.
you should start feeling better. things should start tasting and smelling better,

Quit smoking vs weight gain? -

Quit smoking vs weight gain? -

I quit smoking almost a month ago, but Ive gained a couple pounds. Is it healthier to smoke and be a better weight, or stick it out with 5 extra pounds? Jeans very tight!!!
i was worried about weight gain when i quit smoking in january. i gained a few pounds, but as soon as i was able to breathe better, i started exercising...waking, jogging and cycling. that was the only way for me to keep my weight in check and not want to smoke as bad. stick with it, those 5# will come off, try exercise. in another month, you-ll notice how much better your skin looks too. accept the fact that you miss smoking, but don-t give in...this too shall pass. congrats on quitting!
Sticking out the 5 pounds is the way to go, that extra five pounds wont kill you like smoking, and you should be able to lose it easily. How did you quit? I want to try again. I quit for a year and a half and started back up!
You can always exercise and diet to lose the extra pounds. Lung cancer and heart disease are a little harder to get rid of.
If you are exremely overweight, then you probably should continue smoking and also work out. Since being overweight may be more damaging to your health. However, if you are within your weight limit, quit smoking, and perhaps work out a bit more. Not only will you lose weight, but you will feel better too. Also, consider that smoking is not only unhealthy for you but the people around you. I personally would quit smoking, good luck on quitting!
It-s definitely healthier to stay smoke free. I quit smoking a couple of years ago and did gain a few pounds initially, but I found that I had more energy and was able to do more physical activities. I started working out more and running and lost all of the weight that I gained and then some. My blood pressure is now lower than it was when I was a smoker and I just in general feel better. Hang in there with the few extra pounds and try to start adding physical activity to your daily routine. It-s a great stress reducer. Congrats on making healthier choices :-)
The other answers are right on. The health risk of smoking -outweighs- a 5 lb. gain.

What do you guess it is that causes people to put on weight when they give up smoking? Do they eat between meals due to nervousness?

All of us have to watch our weight anyway as we get older and our metabolism slows. Lower calorie snacks, smaller portions at meals, and more exercise can remove 5 lbs. without too much discomfort. Those of us that would like to lose a lot more have more of a challenge.

Anyway, congratulations on giving up smoking. It is good for you and for the kids -- who won-t breathe 2nd hand smoke and they get a positive role model too.
alright here is what you need to do,eat healthier foods get your mind off of smoking and if you want to,try asking your doctor for help
I would say stick it out with the 5 extra pounds, You will even out in the end. I am so proud that you have the courage to quit, please stay that way. I hope that all is well and you are a insperation to me.
Often times exercise is a way to cut the cravings for cigarettes. Maybe take advantage of the opportunity and exercise while quitting to smoke.
cut down on the snacks
smoking is not good I have to quit as well
just work on the chub walk it off
People will tell you to deal with the weight, but I would rather keep smoking and weigh less. If you smoke it-s bad for you and if you become overweight it-s bad for you so, pretty much damned if you do and damned if you don-t!
Good luck on what ever you decide!
Good for you !! A few extra lbs. as opposed to the health risks smoking can involve you in are well worth the weight gain !!
Smoking can kill you; you should stick with quitting smoking. It is so easy to lose 5 extra pounds. To lose weight the first step is to detoxify your body first. You know you have lots body toxins due to smoking, and make it very difficult to go to body to burn away fat. There are some other things you can do to help, like eat every three hours, so you would not feel hungry and eat too much each time. Is not what you eat, it is how you eat and how much you eat. You can eat almost anything, but avoid big meal, (big meal bring blood sugar up and left over energy become fat), drink green tea, exercises 30 minutes daily. And most importantly get detoxification massage, detoxify foot bath, and detoxify food program. After you free of body toxins, whatever you do to lose weight will work; you should be able to lose it and keep it.
just as long as you feel good about yourself,do whatever. try running or walking, you-ll losew the weight
stay quit deffinatly... just either exercise or get new pants
If only it was 5 extra lbs! Watch your cholesterol as well, it can spike now that you don’t smoke - eat more.

I need something that can help me quit smoking.
All help greatly appreciated.
Champix. Expensive but well worth it.
Recognizing these triggers and how to avoid them in addition to what we can replace smoking with is the first step to becoming and staying smoke-free. Here are a few suggestions for substitutions which may help you cope with your smoking triggers:
1. Drink orange juice for breakfast instead of coffee – vitamin C fights against nicotine addiction
2. Avoid hanging out with smokers.
3. Chew minty gum – peppermint is a natural nicotine fighter
4. Keep your hands busy – carry toothpicks around with you to keep your mouth busy too

I quit over 2 years ago cold turkey after many failed attempts. I tried the patch, pills, gum and all failed. I did it! Not some product by a -caring- doctor.

What helped me was reading these free articles, all of them!

http://www.quitsmoking.com/quitinfo.htm

All the best to a healthier and happier you.
CONGRATULATIONS ON QUITTING COLD TURKEY, ANS STAYING NICOTENE FREE FOR OVER 2 YEARS THAT IS REALLY A MILESTONE.

EVERYONE DOES NOT HAVE YOUR WILL POWER AND DETERMINATION TO DO THAT, INSTEAD THEY BELIEVE THEY HYPE OF THE PATCH, PILLS, GUM ETC. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU SOMETHINGS YOU ARE JUST GONNA HAVE TO DO IT ON YOUR OWN. MY FRIENDS AND I WANTED TO LOOSE WEIGHT ONE SUMMER AND I WAS NOT VERY BIG ON PAYING A TRAINER TO HELP ME LOOSE WEIGHT BUT MY FRIENDS DID, SO I WORKED OUT ON MY OWN. WHEN OUR 3 MONTHS GOAL I HAD LOST A TOTAL OF 31LBS, AND THEY HAD ONLY LOST 12, 15, AND 19LBS, AND THEY WERE FUSSING ABOUT THE MONEY THAT THEY HAD SPENT. YOU COULD TELL THAT WE ALL HAD LOST WEIGHT BUT I WAS THE WINNER, LOL!. THEY ASKED ME WHAT DID I DO? I TOLD THEM THAT I JUST MADE UP IN MIND TO DO IT AND ONCE I GOT STARTED THAT WAS THAT, I WORKED OUT TWICE A DAY (EXCEPT FOR ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS), AND I DRANKED LOTS OF WATER.

BOTTLED WATER: $4.99
WORK OUT PANTS/SHIRT: $10.00
NEW CLOTHES: $200
THE LOOK ON MY FRIENDS FACE WHEN THEY SAW HOW MUCH WEIGHT I HAD LOST: PRICELESS
weel, there are a lot of ways we can help others who smoke. Instead of telling them the disadvantages of smoking, try telling them the benefits of not smoking. Quiting smoking is not easy, especially for those who are chain-smokers. the change has to come from within....the person needs to really want to stop, and to have discipline. quiting also has a withdrawal syndrome that is why we advice them to chew gums and/or candies and teach diversionary techniques.= ) remember: don-t force anyone to stop smoking. Be patient and assertive....it-s their choice, just like it was your choice to stop smoking...
give them lots of gum or alot of jolly ranchers

Has anyone successfully quit smoking after 13 years or more? -

Any success stories?
How did you did you do it?
I smoked for years...One day I finally quit. I had to change my habits and keep busy. On my way home from work I would get gas and go inside to pay. There they were, right by the cash register...so I would pick up a pack. I started going a different way home and paying at the pump instead. I also started chewing gum and sucking on lollipops.
I haven-t had one for 5 years..the smell alone makes me sick.
Yes, loads of people!

Not me, I smoked for weeks. However, my Mum and Dad gave up after 35 years of it. That was ten years ago and they haven-t smoked since. My Dad did spend a few years on Nicotine gum, but it is still better than smoking, and my Mum used gum for only a few months.
They don-t regret it at all. They are much healthier.
Smoked for 33 years without really thinking about quitting. Got the flu and I felt like I was going to die. I quit cold turkey, bothered me for about 4 or 5 months. That was 11 years ago (I-m 66 now). Not one thougth that I will ever start again and it does not bother me 1 bit.
You have to want to quit to do it.

Good luck
go to www.quitnet.com it has a members forum and testimonials to read. i smoked for 17 yrs and quit dec 2007. i have not smoked a cig for 8 months now. just do it, if you love your body and want to live longer for your loved ones, you will do it. you have to. now and not later.
Sure

I used the Commit nicotine lozenges, then used Chantix for six months to get off the lozenges
It-s easy to quit smoking I-ve done it dozens of times.

He hasn-t smoked in like 1 hour, but his usual time is like every 30 minutes...but anyways he smokes a pack a day for about 25 years, when he woke up this morning his body is kinda hot, any ideas, and solutions?
I smoked for 27 years and tried several times to quit but you really have to WANT to quit to be able to do it. I had to use the help of several - stop smoking - devices like
the gum, an inhaler, meds and the patch but NOT all at once. it-s best to use two means at once although with the meds your only supposed to use it and thats it but what he should do is go to his doc and tell him he wants to quit smoking and to help him with a plan. After while it was like a competition between me and the cigarettes and the longer I went without one the the more points I got till I finally beat them. One morning I woke up and lit one, it tasted horriable and I put it out and never went back. That was 4 years ago.

Bandit is right, get him to drinks lots of water if you can. I was lucky I drank lots of water even when I was smoking.
Habits, Habits, and how to quit your very favourite habit, my favourite subject. we all make excuses for reactins, a little interpretations of little fevers, headaches, an unusual behaviour, let me tell you, smoking is habitual much like, drinking, eating, etc..the one way i figured was to trade smoking-bad habit- into good habit.Example: Brushing your teeth is a good habit-everytime you have the urge-remember:toothbrush. by the way, there are millions of books about how to quit-for aprice. All it takes is one good sense.
I quit cold turkey after a 3 pack a day habit. It-s going to be very hard for him for 2 weeks. Then it starts getting better. After a month, the nicotine is gone and the urges are mental. He can do this. Like you said he has set a milestone of 1 hour. He needs to never start over !!! The next milestone may be 3 hours, etc. But every minute that goes by brings him closer to his goal. Lighting even one cigarette puts you back to the beginning !

I recommend strong black coffee and lots and lots of water. He has to make an effort to flush as much of the nicotine out of his system as he can.

This is what worked for me. I am not a medical person, but I know the most important thing is determination. He has to make up his mind to beat this.

Good luck
Chantix is great for many people, it helped me.

Check out the Commit lozenges, too. They-re better than the patches and the gum, and they let you cut down on nicotine gradually. It also worked for me. I used them for two years after I stopped smoking, then used the Chantix to help me stop the Commit lozenges.

If I could stop with this stuff, so can anyone!

And BTW, your Dad is going to be very grouchy for a few days. Don-t take it personally! It-s the withdrawal.
He has to want to quit himself in order to quit smoking; not you, not your mother, no one will get him to quit otherwise. I know you have good intentions, but in the meantime, stop pestering and annoying the hell out of him by trying to get him to quit.

My boyfriend made a committment to me that hed quit smoking. This was 2 years ago. Since then he has relapsed. I gave him until next Saturday to kick the habit, WHATS THE EASIEST WAY TO HELP HIM QUIT?
-Any products that work? KEEP IN MIND HES 17
The patch worked for me . But He has to want to quit for himself .There is no way to force him to quit. If he really wants to smoke he will , no matter what you say. Either you love him anyway or leave him . Force will only cause hard feelings .
tell him the consicuesses that he will ahve to go through and KEEP HIM AWAY FROM CIGARS!!
Chantix works great. It is a little pricey but so are cartons of cigarettes.
Sis, don-t give dateline but motivation.. to quit is hard.. try to cut down .. in between offer him sweets or gum..

I keep an empty pack of cigarettes in my purse. That way, I don-t need to buy them as I have a pack in my purse. Weird, as they-re empty, but it works!

Inhaling from a stick of fire apparently irritated my tongue and throat, to the point where I couldn-t eat anything even REMOTELY spicy anymore. Even drinking soda would cause my tongue to burn like I-d eaten a raw jalapeno, seeds and all. All the foods I loved to eat were suddenly off-limits. That-s what helps me when I feel the desire to go for a cigarette.
my illness~i was in a coma for 4 weeks ~got over the worst of the withdrawl symptos with out knowing it~
just never bothered me since ~my reason for not even being tempted~the hospital staff who saved my life ~i am not prepared to let them down by making myself ill again.
nearly 5 years now from 100+ a day to ZERO
have a nice day
My aunt smoked for YEARS - now she can-t even breathe without an oxygen tank. Also my aunt has always died MANY times from smoking. I-ve seen her hooked up to machines and tubes going in and out of her body.

Once I went to visit her at the hospital and she couldn-t even sit up. ALL because she STILL smokes and wants to a dumb@ss.
Whatever works for you. Everybody is different. I heard it was bad for you back in the 60-s and just quit a 1 pack a day habit/addiction, but then I quit drinking the same way in 2001.

Congratulations on quiting. I am proud of you for doing it.
I once quit by smoking tobacco-less cigs, that was weird because, they tasted horrible! You can quit by replacing them with smoking something that taste bad like, those little cigars.
One night at a club when I smoked more often than I drank, I put a cig in my mouth - for some reason it tasted like crap! With the exception of a one-day relapse last year I have not smoked (tobacco) since 05-
