How does someone quit smoking? -

Things to Keep in Mind
Photo by Borge SandnesTry and pick a good time to quit. Don-t try to quit during the holidays, during finals week, right before a big presentation, or any other time where stress levels are heightened. This will decrease your chances of success and give you an excuse to start smoking again.
You may gain a small amount of weight when quitting smoking. This is normal. Most people gain between 5 to 10 pounds after quitting due to the decreased metabolism that quitting nicotine can cause.[3] Weight gains of more than 10 pounds are usually caused by people substituting food for cigarettes in their diet.
Be prepared to try quitting more than once. Most people are not fully successful the first time they try and need to attempt it a couple of times before they finally quit for good. Don-t get discouraged if you aren-t successful at first. Like anything worth doing, it may take you a few tries to get it right.

Step 1: Prepare to Quit
Set a quit date. Decide on a day within the next two weeks in which you will stop smoking entirely. You may want to pick a day that has added significance, such as your birthday, wedding anniversary, or the first day of the New Year. If you smoke at work, you may want to consider quitting on the weekend, a vacation, or on a day off.
Remove all tobacco products, ashtrays, lighters and matches from your home, car and office. Having even one pack of cigarettes at your home will make it that much easier to start smoking again.
Notify friends and family that you plan on quitting. Warn them that you may be irritable or have mood swings for a week or two. Ask them to be patient and supportive during the process. If someone close to you smokes, ask that they refrain from smoking around you (or even better - suggest that they try quitting with you).
Talk to your doctor about your decision to quit smoking.[4] Find out if this may have any affects on the medications you are currently taking. You may also want to inquire about medications that may help you overcome the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking.
Step 2: Find Medications to Help You Quit Smoking
(Note: All of the medications described in this section have been FDA approved for smoking cessation)[5]
Varenicline: Marketed under the brand name Chantix, Varenicline is a prescription-only medication that helps smokers by blocking the rewarding effects of nicotine, while also helping people deal with the withdrawal symptoms of quitting. For more information, see the Official Site.
Bupropion SR: Also known as Zyban or Wellbutrin, Bupropion is a medication that is designed to help reduce nicotine cravings and may also relieve symptoms of depression that some people may feel when quitting. Burpropion is not recommended for those with a history of eating disorders or seizures.
Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT)
Nicotine Patch
Patch: A nicotine patch is a Transdermal Patch which releases a steady stream of nicotine into your bloodstream through your skin. Patches are usually used for a designated period of time (16-24 hours) and are available in differing strengths (depending on how many cigarettes you smoked). One of the benefits of the patch is that it provides a constant stream of nicotine to the system so that nicotine levels in your system stay consistent throughout the day.

Amazon: Nicotine Patches (Partner)
Nicotine Gum
Gum: Nicotine gum is a replacement therapy that allows nicotine to be delivered to the bloodstream by being absorbed by the tissues in your mouth. Users of nicotine gum may chew anywhere from 10 to 30 pieces a day, or may just have one anytime they feel a craving to smoke. Just like the patch, nicotine gum is available in different strengths. Nicotine gum often works well for people who have an oral fixation, or a psychological dependence on the physical act of smoking.

Amazon: Nicotine Gum (Partner)

Nicotrol Nicotine Inhaler

Inhaler: A Nicotine inhaler allows the user to take small puffs of nicotine (as needed) from a small inhaler, without the harmful Carbon Monoxide found in cigarette smoke. Good for administering small doses of nicotine when cravings arrive. Also, inhalers also help by mimicking the act of raising a cigarette to your lips.

Commit Nicotine Lozenge

Lozenge: Nicotine lozenges come in the form of a hard candy which slowly dissolves in your mouth while releasing nicotine into your bloodstream. As with nicotine gum, lozenges deliver nicotine to the brain quicker than the patch, making it easier to respond to specific and powerful nicotine cravings.

Have Any Suggestion To Help Me Quit Smoking? -

Well, I-m 22 and I have been smoking for going on 4 years, and I-m really having a hard time quitting. I really want to quit because it-s a nasty habit, and I sing and I want to keep my singing voice before it gets too late. I tried going cold turkey...only lasted for about a week. So do you guys have any suggestion or advice that might help me?
Nope, I disagree with most of these answers...

I have recently successfully quit the fags after a few years of smoking (it does not matter whether you have been smoking for 1 year or 50)

It is all in the mind and when you are truly sick of smoking (find out what motivates you to stop - health and saving money DID NOT do it for me - I am vain so getting lines around my mouth motivated me to stop) SET A DATE and tell everyone you know..

There are plenty of nicotine replacements, I used patches initially and now I chew the gum when I get overwhelmed.. use them, they work..

That and breaking all the smoking associated habits.. for example, I used to smoke a lot when I was on the phone.. I forced myself to lay on my bed and keep my phone conversations short (I could never smoke inside, let alone in my bedroom!!). I also didn-t drink for a few days whilst I adjusted...

If you can get hold of a book called -The easiest way to stop smoking by Allan Carr) I would recommend it...

I have also replaced the smoking with exercise.. and that has been really helpful. I also kept my old dirty ashtray and whenever I wanted to smoke, first thing I did was go out to the balcony and take a deep sniff of the ashtray... gross!

I am loving not smoking.. I can taste far better, my voice sounds less harsh and I smell beautiful!!!

Hope some of those things help you.. but really, give it until you are truly sick of smoking and also find out what will motivate you to stop.. it-s different for most people but it sounds like keeping your lovely singing voice may work for you!

Good luck!!!!

there are some herbal cigs availalble wich dont contain tobacco etc n helps many ways in health.. yu can try that..

Simple, Effective Ways to Quit Smoking

If you are a smoker who realized the bad effects of your habit and you want to find easy ways to quit smoking, this article is for you. However, you must be prepared because kicking this habit is not easy if you have been a long time smoker. The nicotine that is present in cigarettes is a very addictive drug. That is why smoking is very hard to quit because the addiction that is caused by nicotine.

To win over your battle against nicotine addiction, you need to prepare for the sacrifice ahead and make sure that you are committed to your goal. The desire to quit must really come from you and you should be steadfast to act on your desire immediately. People who are successful in quitting smoking say that quitting cold turkey is the best technique.

Don-t despair if you really want to quit smoking because there are easy ways to quit smoking that you can follow to win the fight against nicotine addiction. But not all of these ways can work to all smokers. What you can do is select ones that you think will work for you and reject those that you think wouldn-t.

1. You can also try to smoke fewer and fewer cigarette sticks as the day progresses. This will allow your mind and your body to want less and less nicotine each day. But you cannot decrease just a stick a day; there is also a time limit. The usual target is to totally stop smoking two weeks since you started reducing your consumption.

2. To battle nicotine addiction, you need all the support you can get. Your friends, office workers, and your family can watch over you in case you wanted to reach for a stick. They can also take you mind off from thinking about smoking. Thus, you need to inform them that you are trying to quit so that they can help you.

3. Today, there are prescription medications that can help flush the nicotine out your body. Your doctor can give you this prescription. This is very helpful if you-re trying to quit smoking.

4. Try to make yourself busy to take your time and your mind off from smoking. Learning a new sport or trying a new demanding hobby will help divert your attention from smoking.

But you must remember that no amount of easy ways to quit smoking can stop you from picking another stick if you are not determined enough to kick your habit. A weak determination will certainly render the easy ways to quit smoking you-re been hearing about useless to help you.

Read about the easy ways to quit smoking at my health blog that has helped many find freedom from smoking.
It-s all about willpower, if I really truly wanted to quit, I would just stop smoking period. But, I don-t want to quit I enjoy a smoke. My friends who wanted to quit have told me they just stopped cold turkey and they have stayed that way until now. If you really want to quit then just stop smoking literally, throw out all the cigarettes, lighters, matches, ashtrays, etc. and just stop plain and simple. If you feel the urge fight it, but I think if you TRULY want to quit the urge to smoke won-t come. I think that is how people quit cold turkey.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
Tricks and tips can help a bit, but it really comes down to willpower.

The best way I-ve found to quit is to move in with a non-smoker. It becomes too troublesome to find chances and places to smoke, and even when you do, you-ve got that person constantly disapproving of what you-re doing. I cut down drastically when I lived with a nonsmoker.

Other than that I-ve found that staying physically active helps a lot. I wanted a cigarette most when I wasn-t busy, or when I was just goofing around. Watching tv, or playing on the computer, or lounging about. If I get up and put my mind and body toward some task, I quickly lose the urge to smoke.

Exercising helps. Going for walks, jogs, playing a sport, etc.

Nicotine gum can help slightly if you have a major craving and are about to flip out.

Avoiding coffee and alcohol helps, as both lend themselves to wanting a smoke.

I also found that keeping at least 1 cigarette nearby helped me. When I was completely out of cigarettes, I had a vague sense of panic at absolutely being without something I wanted/needed. But if I had one cigarette somewhere nearby, then I knew that I wasn-t being denied a pleasure - I was choosing not to smoke that cigarette, of my own free will, and if I really needed it, I could have it. It was sort of like a safety net.

Something else that helped me personally was stopping to envision what I was doing to my body, very carefully. A lot of the time we go through life not paying attention to our organs, which are just a few centimeters or inches beneath our skin, beating and pulsing and expanding and contracting and powering our bodies. I reminded myself of my lungs and heart and voicebox actually being there, in vivid detail, being damaged by my smoking. A reminder of mortality. That was perhaps more real for me because I-ve known so many people to die of lung cancer, to have voice boxes cut out, etc.

Finally, if you give in and smoke one, don-t give up. Just resolve yourself to not smoke another one. If you really want to quit, you can. Remember that you are the only one in control of your actions and your body.
i made one place my smoking place.. outside.. i dont smoke in my car anymore, or in my house.. so i smoke alot less... slowly get down to none... chew on something..candy or gum... to get rid of the -oral fixation-... after about 2-3 days of no nicotine it is out of your system.. after that its all mental.. good luck! :)
The only true thing that helps is wanting it. If you have trouble quitting than you do not truly want it. Examine your motives. that remains the best way. I smoked for 15 years, then one day decided it was enough. I had to truly want to stop when it finally worked.
I quit. My voice is horrible by the way.....

so you decide for yourself if you want to smoke yourself towards lungcancer or a creaky voice...

if not, then you must next REMEMBER that you WANT to quit. That is all;-)))

I really wish you the strength to remember that you WANT to quit. Good luck!
remember also, your singing voice will last you forever, while smoking will cut forever short.

Best wishes for you!! go for it!
Perhaps you should join a Quit Smoking Clinic.

Thank you.
I used the Committ program and highly recommend it. First you have to want to quit, then if you follow the guidelines that come with the Committ program you are home free. I was a 45 year smoker and had tried a lot of different things. You must decide why you want to quit and then it is easy. Haven-t had or desired a cigarette in 3 yrs.
Committ are lozenges that you substitute for cigarettes
i don-t have a answer, but i-ll be waiting on your answer because i want to stop smoking also for the up coming year. so let me know what answers you get. Please

What is the best and painless way to quit smoking? -

I tried every thing patches.... gums ... but nothing really ever works!!
You will face pain. Forget about it not being painful. I-ve never really believed in the patch since I don-t think you can combat cravings for nicotine with doses of nicotine except in EXTREME cases. Go cold turkey. That-s the best way possible. Get through withdrawal, and live a longer, healthier life! Just plan it out beforehand or see your doctor about it.
Best way to quit is cold turkey. It will behard. pick-up a new hobby to keep yourself occupied
Try Allan Carr-s -The Easy Way- book.

Most successful method I know.
Hi YA
If you have tried them and they didn-t help you, You will have to go with will power. Its not easy, i smoke and i know i shouldn-t say this (but if the doctor told me i will die tomorrow if i don-t give up) I would run to my nearest and buy 60 fags and get them all smoked for real. I just could not do it. But i wish you all the best in trying YA
Stop buying them. You cant smoke what you dont have.
I have-nt found a way yet,I suppose it boils down to will power but mine is -nt strong enough
Give up, who for you or the moaners who go on and on
about us smokers if you want to DO it and suffer or do as i do
puff away and DON`T do it.
The fact of the matter is, when you WANT to quit, you will.

I was a smoker for 15 years and -tried to quit- twice before I actually did. I tried gum the first time and patches the second. Both times I ended up smoking again with a couple of months. Absolutely pointless.

I know now that the reason it was pointless is because its not just a habit you-ve formed, its an addiction that is comparable physically to heroin. You are addicted to nicotine, whether you admit it or not. This is the first thing that you need to acknowledge to yourself...and I don-t just mean think it, I mean believe it. You have an addiction. At which point, when you truly believe it, you will instantly realise that topping up/replacing your addiction with another form of -hit- (eg gum/patches) is completely pointless. The only true way to rid yourself of it is to prove to yourself that you have the will power to go without.

This is the gods honest truth and its the only way you will quit and *stay off it forever*. To bring this home to you a bit more, I highly recommend a book that I read when I decided to quit. Its called Allen Carr-s Easy Way to Stop Smoking...and you can buy it on amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allen-Carrs-Easy…

It probably sounds like a load of hocus pocus, self help, hippy crap to you....because it certainly did to me....but a friend of mine who had quit, give me a copy that someone had given him and just told me to read it. You have to continue smoking whilst you read it and it tells you about the reason why you are addicted to the thing in your hand...its kind of a psychological deprogramming...it wouldn-t work without the cig in your hand. When you-ve finished the book, the last paragraph tells you to finish the last cigarette you will ever smoke and then you have quit.

It truly works, I-ve seen it work for a bunch of my friends which is the only reason I read it in the first place. Give it a go. I went from smoking 40 marlboro red a day to nothing. I was completely addicted and stopped immediately. I never even craved.
There-s a drug called Zyban...also known as Wellbutrin. It was originally marketed as an anti-depressant but it was found to have a positive effect on addictive cravings. You-ll need a prescription for it but it is widely used by the medical profession to help folks quit smoking.
In addition, you will need something to keep your hands busy. Nicorette make a product that resembles a cigarette and when you put it in your mouth and puff on it, it offers the same resistance a real cigarette does.
A dyed in the wool smoker needs 7-9 cigarettes to satisfy the cravings yet they smoke 20 - 30 cigarettes a day. That-s because the act of smoking is as addictive as the cigarette itself.

Try these and good luck with your project. It-s a hard habit to break.
dont its 2 hard+pointless as were breathin random toxic fumes evryday anyway
Just do as I did: Say -When I-ve finished these I-m not buying any more. Then finish them, and don-t. It sounds a bit harsh, But I did it that way, and without any of this -withdrawal symptoms- nonsense either! - AND I was on 100+ a day when I did it!
If this prat can do it, ANYBODY CAN !!!
where patches
Addiction is never painless to resolve. It takes determination and hard work. A supportive environment and finding other ways to spend the time you use to spend smoking. For instance most smokers smoke automatically after a meal, so go for a walk instead. Or you may smoke while having cocktails, then try snacking on nuts or popcorn.

If it were an easy addiction, then there would be far fewer smokers in the world.

Hang in there, if you can stay clean for 6 weeks you-ll feel like a new person and a lot of the craving will have disappeared.

It-s a -one day at a time- process..

Good luck....
there is no easy way you need to stop staight off and you need buckets of will power
The best way to quit is to never start in the first place. Since that didn-t work for you, I suggest you go cold turkey. Also, I would like to suggest you put all that money you save by not smoking into a hobby. I highly suggest you take up model railroading.
Hi,
To quit smoking, first you must have try many way what people tell you. Taking sweet, gums and etc.....
Well, i am a smoker too, like you now trying out in everything people said or visiting doctor for help. I can say is all bullshit.
My experience is my mind, whether your mind is set or not?
If you really want to stop you must first set your mind telling yourself to stop and throw the whole packet away. As for me, is because I have a chest-pain. Then go club with friends who are smoker also. Can-t take it and my backside itchy went to start smoking back again. Before you quit mind if I ask how long you been smoking? If for many many donkey year than you better consult a Doctor before you stop.
For my case, doctor advice me to smoke less, for the time being. And cut down slowly till I can total stop an end the whole thing..You can mail me and share : shellman8888@yahoo.com.sg
Challenge yourself. That-s what I did. Be determined to quit. Do not smoke for a day. If you have the urge, do something else to keep yourself (busy) from lighting up that cigarette and stay away from people who smoke. Then the next day, remind yourself that you didn-t smoke yesterday and say if I didn-t smoke yesterday why can-t I do it today. Preoccupy yourself. Do the sdame thing the following day. Just challenge yourself. The first 2-6 weeks will be hard (for me it is) that-s why you to stay away from people who smoke because everytime you smell it it will really smell verygood to you and will make you feel you want to try just a puff. Just take it one day at a time. The next thing you know you haven-t smoke in a long time and you might even hate the smell of cigarette. That-s what happened to me I hate the smell and it gives me headache (now) especially when I smell it on my clothes or hair.

Don-t give up trying. If this didn-t work for you try another way. Just don-t give up. If there-s a will there-s a way...
the best way to quit is never to start!
Try Chewing Gum.
Do you really want to quit? Have you listed all the advantages you can think of for quitting? Such as smelling better, food tasting better, health benefits long term, etc.? I-m sure you could add plenty of things to the list of advantages. Quit smoking because you want all of those things.
If you have been thinking about quitting because it does damage to you, those around you, cost mega bucks..... These and other things like these are true but you may be feeling coerced into quitting. Coercion has too much fall-out and it-s only a band-aid.
You may try acupuncture (from a reliable person), hypnosis, other products for helping you quit.
You should feel proud that you are working on this and even if you have tried many ways, you just found some that aren-t for you. Now you can rule those out and use other methods. Good luck, I-d like you to have a great quality of life.
throw them out the window - cold turkey is the best way to go
Ween yourself off it a bit at a time. Step by step. Thats what I did. Then get it down so that you only smoke when you-re at the pub, then cut down again. If you cut down one at a time, slowly, your body has time to adjust.

good luck!
i have been smoking for 6 yrs and one day i just decided to quit...i never tried the patches, gums, or anything...i quit cold turkey...try that it just might...and will power and determination to quit...when you get a nicotine craving put some gum or something in your mouth
Hmmm I-d been a smoker for 10 years and when I decided I needed to give up, I did just that. For some reason I never got cravings, or the bad sweating or aggitated. I never tried gum or patches so I would say the best thing to do would be to go cold turkey, because the faster the nicotine is out your body. the better. With patches and gum you-re just replacing fags with something else addictive.

This answer probably doesn-t help much, but give going cold turkey a try. It-ll be tough, but just keep saying to yourself it-ll be worth it. It can take up to a week for nicotine to leave your body, so detox with cranberry juice and lots of water and hopefully you shouldn-t crave too much... if at all.

hope that helps.
Do the gum and after the gum put a lolly pop in, it worked for men or go for a walk to burn off the energy if you can.

And it SUCKS that I actually need to SAY this, but please no answers from people who haven-t been smokers, i.e. -I don-t need to quit cuz I don-t smoke!-

Thanks
I found my reason to quit - every time i needed/wanted/craved a smoke I would focus on why I was quiting. I could only do it cold turkey - I had tried the gum and patches but they were no help - I didnt have a problem with the physical addiction, it was the action and the feeling that was difficult to get over.
I carried around a pencil for a long time and would flick it when I wasnt doing anything or when I would normally light up just to continue the movement. It took a few months before I started to feel less and less need to smoke. I still feel it now occasionally but I am able to control it without a huge amount of effort. Its a hard thing to over come - good luck.
Do some research on electronic cigarettes. Some say that using electronic cigarettes can help you quit smoking. Currently there is no scientific evidence for or against it. One option is to gradually lower the level of nicotine in your cartridges to become nicotine and tobacco free.

The other option is to smoke electronic cigarettes with zero nicotine cartridges while applying nicotine patches. That way you separate addiction and habit.

Good Luck! It-s not easy ...

http://www.ecigarettes365.com/forum/quit

I agree with the above. I wasn`t addicted at all. It was just fun in a way I guess. I usually only smoked at work, in my car, or if I was drinking because it was something to do. I quit because I`m asthmatic and I have no health insurance so I had to stop to save money for meds. I also stopped because it sometimes made me feel sick after I smoked and I got into a relationship with this guy and I didn`t want to smell like cigarettes in my hair or on my clothes. Plus my friends dad just died from tracheotic cancer because he smoked like 2 or 3 packs a day :( I`ll have a smoke once in a while but it`s rare and the cravings aren`t bad anymore. Just find a good reason to quit and keep reminding yourself.
I confined myslef in the corner with chicken noodle soup and ate it and whenever i wanted to smoke i cut myself.

Anyone that has stopped smoking, can you share any experiences about withdrawl and how you are handling the urge to smoke?
There are a couple things you can do that will help you with withdrawal and the urge to smoke.

1. Work out alot, run eat healthy, don-t drink alcohol, cut down on coffee, for me all those things make me want to smoke, don-t watch movies with the main actors lighting up or x-files. Nor hang out with friends that smoke.

2. Withdrawal symptoms go away but we just have to remember to take a deep breath and not to punch that guy in the face because he-s taking too long at the register and it-s not his fault he-s a dumb ***. Just remember, it-s because we-ve been smoking for X number of years.

3. Also becareful when in stressful situations, you-ll definately want to light up. Death or breakups, or getting fired etc.

4. It all comes down to your personal choice, and giving in or being in control of your decision

5. Anthony robbins says to imagine how happy you are be healthy and living longer, your children etc. Instead of imagining how good that five minutes will be after lighting up because that doesnt last.

6. Or just look at this link:

noone likes a quitter
i quit 3 months ago after almost 30 years it is very hard but if you want to do it you can you have to keep your self busy when you think about smoking you have to quickly put your mind on something else just keep it in your head that you dont want smoke anymore you really need alot of willpower iwas smoking almost 3packs a day and iquit with no medication you need willpower and support of your family and friends
I am trying .. taking Zyban, which my insurance is paying for. I am sure it is cheaper for them to pay 50 a month for six mnth vs. the alternative. I don-t get the urge much because of meds and sadly when I do get the urge I usually give in.... I KNOW i should not so sometimes I try sucking air through a straw I cut in half or pop a Listerine strip into my mouth. Good luck you!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! That must be tough to do and some people after 35 years aren-t even willing to try quitting. May I ask how you were able to do it? Most of my family smokes and have for 20+ years. I would love to know a successful method to pass along to them to try!
I quit 8 months ago, and it-s killing me!!! Hubby is still 2 packs a day, still working on him...
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I quit smoking cigarettes on April 7th of this year after 35 years of smoking, any one else quit? -

How do i convince my husband to quit smoking? -

How do i convince my husband to quit smoking? -

You can-t.
If he doesn-t decide for himself, then he-ll never quit.
Quitting is hard enough without having someone nagging at you. He must be totally convinced and totally committed to even stand a chance of stopping.

However, as and when he is, you might ask him to read this.

Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.
Your husband needs to realize how much he means to you and the reason you want him to quit is because you care about his health and you want to be with him for a long time. We are all people of choice and that-s what makes life in our control, we like to make our own decisions. He needs to come to a decision for himself to quit but definetly keep trying and don-t give up because you too have a choice to keep your husband in good health and you have the choice to make deals, get angry, be annoying, burn plastic in the livingroom when she lights up a cigerette in the house.......ohh sorry that-s the stage I-m at now. Good luck and let me know what broke the -camels- back, no pun intended.

TIPS FOR QUITTING

Quitting smoking can be a difficult but very rewarding decision for you and your friends or family. To help you begin living your life smoke-free, review the following tips for success.

Think about your reasons for quitting. Write them down and carry them with you. You can read them every day or when the going gets tough.

Choose a good time to quit and set a quit date. Stick with it. Sign a contract. Announce it to family and friends who support your decision.

Think about when and why you use tobacco. Do you use tobacco for a pick-me up? When you are bored? When you are angry, upset, worried? When you are driving your car? When you are with others who are using tobacco?

A couple of weeks before your quit date, wrap your cigarette pack with paper, pencil and rubber band. When you smoke write down the time of day, how you feel, and how important that cigarette is to you. This can help you identify your reasons for smoking.

Have a plan before you quit. If you use tobacco for a pick-me-up, plan to exercise or take a walk instead. When you-re bored, plan to call a friend, listen to music, go for a walk, play with your pet, JUST GET BUSY! When you-re upset, angry, or worried, call a friend, write it down, or talk to someone you trust.

Think good thoughts. -I will do this.- -I-m worth it.- -I-m in control.- -I-m proud of myself.-

What if you smoke after quitting? This does not mean you-re a smoker again- do something now to get back on track. Don-t punish yourself- think about why you smoked and decide what to do the next time it comes up. You-re still a non-smoker.

Postpone sexual relations until he quits.
From personal experience, there is nothing you can do to make him stop smoking. Stopping smoking is a choice he will have to make for himself and one that he must know for certain is the right choice.

There may come a time when he will realize this, that is when you can step in and be as supportive as possible. In the mean time you can express how much you care for him and let him come to this healthier conclusion.

When he does, I recommend a trip to the doctor and a prescription for Welbutrin (Zyban). This is a mild anti-depressant that will help him kick the habit. Give the meds a few weeks to work, then when he takes a toke... well, hopefully he will not have a full stomach. Believe me, this works! Been smoke free for 2 years now after smoking for over 20 years.
you cant it is up to him to quit, i know it can be aggravating but let him know how bad it is for him and if you have children and that is all you can do... smoknig is an addiction and it is very difficult to just quit.
I-m going through the same thing with my boyfriend - he-s getting there!
tips: get a book on quitting smoking from the library and put it under his nose. Also explain all the health dangers - lung cancer, mouth cancer, peripheral vascular disease.
and the social -dangers- - bad breath, smelly clothes and hair, stained yellow teeth.
Finally; explain how all public places are going to have no-smoking bans imposed within the next couple of years no matter where u are in the western world..
the whole world is turning anti-smoking!
good luck with that one, Ive been trying for 8 years now to get my hubby to quit be he says hes not ready and as long as im nagging him he wont quit. i guess its something you have to want to do yourself.
How daring are you willing to be?

the reason i bring this up is I knew a guy who dated this girl who smoked and could not stop.

he told us that one night, after she lit up, he unzipped his pants and whizzed on her pack of cigarettes and left the house in silence.

She stopped smoking that night for him (and for herself)
stop nagging him, it-s only gonna nerve him and need another one.
He-ll quit when he-s ready, and then you can offer support.
do the math on how much he spends on cigarettes in a yr and go for a goal of something he really wants and see how long it willtake to save the money if he quits.
Go to this web site it has a lot of information on the dangers of smoking. Hope it helps. Thanks for the points.

show him a picture of the lungs of a long time smoker with cancer or any other lung problems , if that dosent stop him, then ur out of luck cause its up to him to quit its as bad as smoking crack
Maybe you have something that he really likes. Maybe you could work out a deal.
Can-t give you a definitive answer since I don-t know what kind of person he is. A friend of mine just found out that his kid is allergic to nicotine/tobacco smell. Knowing the type of person he is, I knew the moment he told me that he-s going to try his damnedest to quit.

No amount of convincing can get him to stop. We can-t change others, we can motivate and hope they change on thier own, but we just can-t do that for them.
he must be addicted to it now, although you can make a rule that there is no smoking in the house because if he wont stop his smoking is harming you too, also your kids and pets if you have them.
If you dont have kids and he wants them let him know that smoking reduces your sperm count

How can i Quit smoking? -

Here-s what I did. I picked a date like two months in advance. It was like October, and so I chose December 26th to be my non-smoker beginning. So, I smoked my guts out for two months. When I woke up on December 26th, I did not smoke again. You must mentally prepare yourself for it. Over the years I-ve heard people say things like -I-m trying to quit smoking-. Wrong. -trying- is not good enough. Just have your mind made up. I know we have all looked at oh say, drug addicts and said -If they just wouldn-t stick that needle in their arm!-. Same thing with cigarettes. Choose not to do it.
-Cigana is a healthier alternative to smoking. While regular contain tobacco and 4000+ carcinogens, Cigana contains just nicotine. Cigana looks and feels like a regular cigarette, provides the nicotine that smokers crave, without the harmful, cancer-causing toxins, ashes, smells or second hand smoke.-

I read testimonials on this product and they seem to be happy. I am not a smoker myself, but this could help you.
On October 5th it will be 3 years without a cigarette for me. I decided on that very day I would stop smoking. I had half a pack of cigarettes left and never smoked another one.

I had tried patches and inhalers and gums and nothing worked. I just had to want to quit. I loved smoking. But I hated my clothes smelling like smoke and other people smelling me too. I hated paying for smokes. So this is how I quit...

I said...-I quit.- And I did. I missed the motion of my hand coming up to my mouth so I carried around a bottle of water constantly. I must have drank 20 bottles of water a day in place of cigarettes. I lost over 15 pounds by drinking all that water.

I also missed all that private time I had before when I would go outside to smoke. So I walked the dogs a lot. Or pretended to use the bathroom.

But the secret for me was the strength to want to quit and the motion of hand to mouth. And I didn-t include anyone on my journey or complain about it. I just did it.

Good Luck. I know you can do it.
I am using the Commit Lozenges to quit and they are really helping me a lot. Whenever I feel like a want a cig, I pop a lozenge in my mouth. After a minute or two the physical urge goes away so that I just have to deal with the mental aspect of wanting one. I won-t say they make it -easy- to quit, but definitely -easier- for me.

Good luck!
I tried quitting for many years. I have finally accomplished it and have been smoke free for 9 years. To help others I wrote a Ezine article on how I did it. http://ezinearticles.com/?Quit-Smoking---How-I-Did-It-id=2785949

Just quit smoking question? -

I jsut quit smoking 2 days so far it-s so good but I feel like I can-t slow down I been moving since 8am I am little light head every now and then I get a little fuzzy eyed but the main thing I can-t slow down is all of this normal how long does it last ty
Congratulations and well done! These feelings are natural and it-s just your body adjusting to more oxygen and nutrient availability and less toxins in your bloodstream. After about three weeks practically all of the residual toxins in your body will be gone (they will have been metabolised). By then your physical condition will have stabilised and you-ll feel much fitter and healthier.
That is normal, my advice hit the bottle and the world will spin for a bit then stop
What you are going through is nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The duration of these symptoms depends upon how much you have been smoking and for how long. You might consider using a natural remedy to reduce the withdrawal symptoms and nicotine craving.
I don-t know how long it lasts.. but I do know you should stick it out.
I did.
It-s tough indeed. Later on you might even feel pain in your body parts (joints, teeth...) which you never felt before when you were still locomoting. But perseverance is the key, and remember the reward awaiting, being fit and healthy!
I support you
I was so glad to hear that you have stopped smoking. My thumbs go way up for you. I know it may be hard but keep going the longer you make it without smoking the easier it will get for you...I promise.I used to smoke and quit more then 9 years ago. Being light headed and moving around is probably normal as your body and mind is missing the nicotine intake. That will slowly fade away and you will feel like a brand new person.Keep up the good work and please don-t ever start smoking again. My dear mother died of cancer due to smoking she suffered horribly until the end.May God bless you.

Trying to quit smoking? -

I know all the reasons to quit of course. But I have been smoking for a very long time. Tips on not starting again? Been 3 days for me now. YEAH!!!! I am very proud right now...but I know I wil be tested again soon....please give me some stories, tips, thoughts to keep me motivated. I need help.
Try to find as much positive support as I did. Try to stop as long as it takes like I did. And try to be grateful for every moment you are tempted to smoke, but don-t. I am happy to tell you my story but it is more important that you get the help and support you need to stay off the rag weed. I-ll try to inspire you. Try to find some good books, people and support. Many people fail because it is too hard to do alone. And many people fail because of peer pressure to stop. Don-t listen to people who think they know what is best. You need to make your own decisions. Try to just work out this craving and don-t worry about the previous or next one. Remember to break the habit it takes about 21 days. But the most important thing is stick with what is working for you. Sometimes it is better to try and suffer on time off for the first week. I really appreciate your interest in stopping, but you deserve all the credit and I thank all your support like family and friends. Best wishes and keep trying if you slip.
Failure is a stone that will drag you down time and time again. Each failure just sets up the next one and makes it easier to fail.
Quitting is hard to do and I-m sure you know that by now. Truthfully, cold turkey is the only way to it, in my opinion. Try to do other things like chewing gum, tic-tacs, etc. Once you make it one year, you-ll feel much better and you-ll not want one. One thing I did was take all the money that I would use to buy smokes and save it in an account. At the end of the year, you-ll be surprised at how much money you-ve saved. Take that money and go on a nice vacation or buy something to reward yourself.

If you backslide, don-t beat yourself up. Put them down again. Most people fail at LEAST a few times before it sticks.

The biggest thing is you have to want to quit for you. If you really don-t want to quit, you-ll smoke out of spite. I know its corny, but it is true. There are a lot of reasons to quit (health problems, smell, etc.), but if you don-t want to, you-ll never be able to do it forever. At lease that-s how it was for me. I wanted to smoke, so I smoked, then I wanted to quit and I did. It really is mind over matter. Nothing more, nothing less.

Good luck, its a habit you will not miss at all in time. I actually can-t stand to be around smoke now and its been a little over a year since I put out my last cigarette.
I can only talk from self experience. I quit cold turkey - I was a pack a day, everyday for 27 years smoker. I set Bastille Day as my day to quit - and that was back in in 1990.

My husband that night took me to a bar where everyone was smoking - and I wasn-t.

I lived on orange Tic-Tacs. They were a god send. I realized all the times I would reach for a cigarette (before a meal, after a meal, during a phonecall) and reach for the Tic Tac instead.

For three months I watched my personality become nasty -- and then, the old me emerged, sense of humor and all.

And I haven-t had a cigarette since - and I have the weight to prove it.

Good luck to you. Just don-t think about it -- keep busy with stuff that is good for you.

i have one pack of cigs left, ive gone from 20 cigs aday to 3 cigs aday over a month, and wanna quit after the pack i brought today. Im thinking of using nicotine patehes, anyone have any other methods that have worked for them?
get people involved. i quit two months ago. relapsed years ago but get people involved. tell ur close friends , family your quitting. so they help you. support you. and when u decide to relapse or think about smoking. they will be there to watch ur downfall and laugh at you. and u wont want to let them down. yeah try the patches. although they didnt work for me, i just had to do it cause im a diabetic as well. and people are telling me left and right if i didnt stop im gonna die faster than i know it. and being only 18 its not too smart. so i had to. think about you.. what problems do you have? any diseases anything at all.. that complicates more with smoking? every cigarette takes 5 minutes of ur life away.. think about it.

chantix isnt bad either, ive heard it has helped people stop.. but its also how much are u willing to quit.
When I joined the church of God, I quit smoking after 1 year that co-member discovered it. According to word of God, nicotine makes our lungs dirty, so we cannot breathe and nicotine bars food nutrients such as protein. so we wrinkles, gets old and have poor resistance to bacteria.
Smoking is not one that can boast our ego. 1 stick lessen our life for 1 year. So drinking is better either. To remove nicotine, try intake of capsule esqualene sold at drug store.
hello.
First set a date of quitting ill set the date for you 12th December 2008.
Then mark the day on your calendar.
Make a consultation with your doctor before the date, ask for advise on chantix, Bupropion all medicines used for quitting smoking.
Next involve your friends and ask them to monitor your progress.
Studies show that if you are able to remain on schedule and dont smoke for 6 weeks after the assigned date, you have a 80% chance of quitting.
Hope this helps! good luck!
Hey man

This seems to be working for my friends. Looks bit silly but no harm in trying.

Tie a rubber band to your hand and when ever you feel like smoking, just pull the rubber band (not too hard) and leave it. You will obviously feel the pain slightly.

Now this is the theory behind it, when you release the rubber band, you get the pain and the brain sends the signal that a pain has occured and that takes priority compared to a feeling that you want to smoke. Basically your body do not want to get any pain, so your brain automatically adjusts to the system that if you feel like smoking, then a pain is going to occur (because u will be pulling the rubber band) and will eventually stop the urge to smoke.

You could try this and inform us. :)

go to your doctor and get Chantix...works wonders! you dno-t crave them and it-s amazing

I-d like to give you a fact that results from smoking.
Did you know that smoking speeds up the aging process, causing smokers to die on average, seven to thirteen years sooner than nonsmokers? Research proves that smokers also tend to die prematurely of heart disease and cancer. In general, smoking makes you look older. Smoking gives you wrinkles, it creates smile lines around your mouth, it stains your teeth and fingertips and it constricts your blood vessels and robbing your skin of nutrients.
I hope these can make quit smoking.
good for you for wanting to quit. There are all kinds of gum and patches but after the first week or so the physical withdrawal symptoms will pass. Stay away from other smokers! You aren-t even old enough to buy cigarettes, where did you get all that money and who bought them for you? Keep your hands busy doing something.

You will have fresher breath, healthier gums, fewer facial wrinkles, better lungs and heart, reduced risk of cancer and more money. Can you handle those symptoms?
nervousness. jittery. still wanting a cigarette, maybe for years afterward. going outside and standing downwind of the smokers on the sidewalk ON PURPOSE!

I smoked for about 25 years. When I quit, I had all of these symptoms. Nevertheless, quitting was one of the very best things I ever did. I have not had a single drag off a cig. in years, and I feel much better for it.
You will always have the -need- to smoke. Even years from now. Immediate withdrawals are usually nausea and irritability.

I started smoking at a very young age, and after too many years, I finally quit cold turkey. It was when my PCP told me that I might not only have COPD, but had most of the early warning signs of emphysema. I had inhalers all over my house, car, office...

The first few days, I was a complete monster to be around. But, after that - things began to smell better. Food tasted better. I began to smell better. My teeth immediately started to whiten again.

I now can smell a person who is smoking 3 cars ahead of me. Or, walking down the street when I-m driving past. Even the people in front of me in line at the supermarket stink like smoke. It-s not a campfire smell - it-s a horrible, disgusting, nauseating smell that once you smell it, you-ll never want to stink like it again.

You won-t get chills. Or seisures. Or anything like drug withdrawals do. But, most of it is mentality. And if you truly want to quit, you-ll have the different mentality that smoking is bad, and smoking people stink.
Coughing (getting the crap out of your lungs), nervousness, anxiety, headaches...usually this stuff is mild and easy to get through, the hard part: the obsession
The common symptoms include an intense craving for nicotine, tension, irritability, headaches, difficulty in concentrating, drowsiness and trouble in sleeping, increased appetite and weight gain.

http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/withdr…

Withdrawal from nicotine has 2 parts – the physical and the psychological. The physical symptoms, while annoying, are not life threatening. Nicotine replacement can help reduce many of these physical symptoms. But most users find that the bigger challenge is the mental part of quitting.

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/conten…

Initially, you might become agitated, irritable and emotional. This typically occurs as the nicotine is leaving your system. You will have cravings for a cigarette, so drinking lots of water is good...it helps to keep the cravings under control and keep you hydrated. You-ll also need to stock up on healthy snacks, as the urge to nibble to keep busy becomes quite strong.

You may find yourself more tired than usual, and suffer from minor headaches. All these symptoms start to lessen after a few days.

Quite often, when you-ve been successful, you have very strong cravings return around the 3 month mark. Be prepared for them and don-t give in.

GOOD LUCK!!!

You can cleanse your system without an herb by first fasting for 24 - 48 hours, and consuming only water, water w/ lemon, and juices.

.
Go to a reputable health food store and get a body detox system. They come in pill form or powder and it helps to pull toxins out of your system. You can also take dead sea salt sitz baths. Add 1 Tbsp to a hot bath and lay in there for about 15-20 minutes. The salt helps your body to detox as well. You can Increase the salt each time. Drink lots of water after wards. There is also an herbal tea called Breathe Easy. It also helps to detoxify your lungs. It doesn-t tastes all that great but it helps. I quit smoking too. Good luck!
go to a gnc store or search it on the web
the pot herb helps
The most under-celebrated wonder-herb on the planet: Cannabis Sativa.
Oh, right, you said QUIT smoking. Have you tried hydrolic acid? That should flush the system out.

What do I do when my wife is a total Beech when where trying to quit smoking. We quit 24 hours ago and the tension in the house is bad....
its probably because its due to the fact that both of u might be -missing- something in your daily routine.. like puffing and stuffs like that, thus making u feel agitated and a bit of temper rising.

ciggarettes contains a kind of -drug- that which also has been rumoured to aid depression by giving u a sense of relieve or Numbness thus relieve tensions/stress in some part of the brain while smoking.. probably both of u are not getting used to not receiving the -relieve-.

it might also be due to the -addiction- climbling up to both of u that u are now trying to quit. Its similar to caffeine addiction.

what i suggest u is to eat more fruits, have some chocolate (chocolates have many goodness if u do some reserch on e net, not to mention quitting smoking=)). exercise regularly. or even find some other things to do to distract yourself as much as possible. It worked for me.. i got too busy to even think about getting a puff. saved me Lots of $$$ in e long term too~!

all in all what u guys are gain in the end is a healthy body and Healthier Life.

i wish both of u the best =)
i will go for a jogging or take a walk n do whatever i want before i go home. that make i forget to smoke
Tell her to stop being a baby and act like an adult.
Or tell her you did not marry and b**ch so stop acting like one.
Some people take it harder than others. Be patient, they say the first 3 days are the worst. Try to get her to do something to take her mind off it. Being out doors is good, the fresh air will help and drink lots of water.
do something to take your mind off it try something fun which makes you breath hard (wink wink)

Has anyone tried NicRX, Chantix, or NicoCure in order to quit smoking? -

I-m looking for something for my mother, she took Chantix for about 2 months and was doing pretty well on it but she did still have a few cigarrets each month....maybe 10-15/month. I know its not going to happen over night but she stopped taking it and now shes back to her regular 1-1.5 packs/week.... I was wondering if there was anything better out there than Chantix.
As a respiratory therapist I have been involved in smoking cessation for over 20 years. Different things work for different people. The main ingredient required is a sincere desire to quit. If Chantix was working for your mom and she quit using it, I have to conclude that she still wants to smoke, especially because it is safe to still smoke while on it. Unfortunately, there are no magic wands out there for this addiction, which has higher recidivism than heroin and crack combined. Have a heart to heart with your mom, let her know how you feel and encourage her to keep trying. Best of luck.
I-m so glad-she is lucky to have a daughter who cares so much.

My wife quit easy with champiks and the use of a book that for the life of me i cant remember the name. I quit with just this book and nothing else. I chewed snuff for years, i was in grade 5 and i am now 39. i have been addiction free for 1 year 4 months. i just phoned my wife book is Allan Carr-s easy way to quit smoking. It explains how you were brainwashed to like smoking in the first place. I absolutely recommend trying this book. wish her the best
I have tried chantix and so have three of my employees and two aunts ....myself included have all quit smoking. Its expensive and you have to follow the plan but it can work. The real key is you the smoker being ready to quit. My driver quit after only one week on chantix ...I took a few weeks and my aunts both quit after two weeks . Most of us have now picked up a chewing gum habit but its better then smoking.
everyone i know tried chantix and have ALL failed. I believe its just a mind set. I smoked for years about a pack a day..when i got pregnant i just quit!! havent smoked for over 4 years. she will quit on her own if and when she is ready. but keep up the encouragement tell her you want her around for a long time!!

simply you have to throw everything away in the toilet.
not so simple, cold turkey is hard and you probably should use something like a nicotin patch, though it is true that if you have cigarretes around the house it-s just another temptation to smoke. If you have the need to put something to your mouth - eat pretzels :D

try the patches....or my aunt chewed on ice everytime she needed a cig....and now she quit smoking. GOOD LUCK!
I used the prescription drug called ZYBAN - and my partner and I went to conselling for about 6 weeks - we gave up over 5 years ago.
You have to want to give up - it wasn-t easy we were both very heavy smokers - but it was worth it in the long run.
Good luck to you
everyone i know says the patch works best, the patch and working out
The first step is to make sure a person really wants to quit smoking. It is hard to quit something you like and is even harder if that something you like is an addictive substance. Anyways, the person in question must really want to quit or it won-t happen.

The next step is to get educated as to what is available. There are organizations that can help you with this. Get as much info as you can. There is no knowledge that isn-t power. Things to consider is success rate, availability of product, price and side effects if any.

third step is to come up with a battle plan that fit your needs. Some people can do it cold turkey. Most can-t. You may choose to a combination of methods. The idea is to do what you think will work for you. You know yourself better than anybody else. Be realistic.

4th is to understand you triggers and avoid them. If you know you smoke when you see your friends smoke then maybe you should hang out less with those friends or avoid that situation. Another trigger can be routines, or after watching a certain t.v. show. FInd what your triggers are and see how you can change them or at least learn to recognise it.

5th finally understand that you will fail many times. Is ok, you are human. JUst keep at it and over time you will succeed.
try jogging it worked for me or try chewing gum
Throw out all you cigarettes. Best is to flush them down a toilet. Then of course, give your lighter and all your money to your wife/husband and let him/her keep it, and remind him/her that you-re trying to quit smoking so she won-t give you any until you quit.
You have to want to quit and know that it will be the hardest thing you will ever do. join a support group and remind yourself everyday why you want to quit. Educate yourself on the damage of cigarettes and remember that each day that you don-t smoke you are healing and become more healthy. Plus it is great to regain your smell and not have your clothes and hair smell like an ashtray. Good Luck. Exercise is also very helpful.
cold turkey is the only way to quit for good. weining yourself with medication or patches only makes the withdrawal symptoms last longer. those who have quit successfully with the patch end up still addicted to nicotine and often chew nicotine gum, continue using the patch, or substitute with another tobacco product.

cold turkey is the most traumatic to your lifestyle, but your body is clear of nicotine in 3-5 days. thats how i did it, and i am 4 years without nicotine, and have absolutely no desire for anything similar anymore.

It feels like your tougue is raw or burnt?
No not at all. My top withdrawal symptom was anger.

For further info on quitting smoking visit the following sources.
No, I never experienced that. My big problem was the craving and my jaw muscles would expand and contract.
I didn-t notice anything like that. I did notice that my sense of taste was increased, so maybe you-re more sensitive to certain foods that were otherwise blocked out or numbed by the smoking. Sense of smell increases bigtime too...let me warn you now, there are ALOT of smelly people out there too! Sorry I couldn-t be of more help! :)
No I did not feel good but not my mouth . but you might be have a side effect from all the smoking you did for me it was my stomach good luck

I want quit my smoking habit, plz give the possible ways to quit my smoking habit,If once i quit my smoking is there is any changes i will get ?plz give a serious answer?
When I was a smoker 5 years ago, it was incredibly difficult for me to quit. I tried going -cold turkey-, brushing my teeth when ever I craved a cigarette, only smoking -lites- etc. Nothing worked. Then my health started getting really bad. I got chronic bronchitis and had to use an inhaler!!! I was only 17 at the time and realized that smoking was not only stupid but horrid for my health. Around that time Zyban a prescription med. came out. I asked my doctor about it and he thought it was a great idea. The directions say to take Zyban for a full 2 weeks and smoke normally, this is to ensure there is enough Zyban in your system so when you stop smoking your body doesn- t go in fits. On day 1 I took Zyban, was my last day I ever smoked!! I took Zyban for a total of 3 weeks and have never gone back to smoking. I highly recommend it if you-re serious about quitting. Good Luck!
1. Seek help from the clinic
2. Get rid of all ash trays in the house
3. Feeling the urge = chew gum or munch carrot or cucumber sticks.
4. Dun hangout with friends who smoke for the time being until you are strong enough to withstand temptation.
Hey there! It is quite simple if you are really serious about it.... After the first three days it gets easy.. associate smoking a cigarette with something digusting (for me it was worms). Break the cycle of smoking by changing your habits.. for example instead of having that first cigarette in the morning.. have a glass of juice or water. Have something like carrot sticks to chew..
November 16th was the Great American Smokeout, an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Help is available all year long at their website. Also visit their Guide for Quitting Smoking site where you can find all sorts of information including local support groups.
I wish you every success!
I was a smoker until my 5-year old son asked me when can he start. That was a turning point for me. Right then and there I threw away my Kents (remember them?) and have never touched a cig again. That was 28 years ago! Sure I still crave a cigarette after dinner, or while out with friends but I-m determined never to go back. The secret to quit smoking?
D-E-T-E-R-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N. What-s it worth to you? How badly do you want to stop, and do you really want to stop? The power of the mind is stronger than any craving a person can have. Think about it and decide.
I have smoked off and on for 65 years and believe me I-m still just one cigarette away from going after them again full time. A week ago just got stubborn and stopped for good I hope. If you are off cigarettes 24 hours you have broken the habit then it-s just stay stubborn. By the way tobacco is more addicting than heroin.
I-m a 23 yr old male, and I use to smoke. I started out smoking when i was around 14-15 and I just recently quit In February of 2006. What you have to do is be ready cause your not ready to do it and try and fail your gonna automatically think your not going to be able to quit. So 99.9% of quitting is mental! You have to be prepared and tell yourself with your last cigarrette in your hand that this is your last one.. It really worked for me..I also noticed that I didn-t gain weight..I watched what I ate. I weight a little less then when i was smoking. Also to divert from your daily routines. I would drink tea in the morning before work rather than smoke a cig breaks I would do crossword puzzles. After any meal I would do a crossword or brush my teeth or chew gum...What the hardest thing to do is to turn down a cig when your out at a bar/club, cause someone at my age likes to go out and feel good and end up having and urge..You CAN-T fall in the hole....I-VE HAD SO MANY URGES. Then I start to gag when I smell it! I hope my response is worth your time and can help! GOOD LUCK!
what i did to quit was cold turkey, try to hang around people that dont smoke is no 1 for a while .... try 3 days alone in your apartment ,throw all your cigs away, and put all your ashtrays away, and just try to play games on the computer, sleep and watch tv dont drink coffee or drink alcohol do some reading .... hope that helps it worked for me
I bought this little booklet called -Quitting Smoking for Dummies.-
At the same time I started jogging every morning, taking supplements and eating healthy food. Now it-s been 3 months and I-ll never go back.

Will and if so how long will it take my lungs to go back to normal after I quit smoking? -

Just 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your blood pressure and
pulse rate drop to normal and the body temperature of your hands and
feet increases to normal.

A mere 8 hours after your last smoke, the carbon monoxide level
decreases and the oxygen level in your blood increases to normal.

Just 24 hours after your last cigarette, you substantially lessen
your chances of having a heart attack.

Two days after your last cigarette, you will notice that your
ability to taste and smell is enhanced.

Three days later, your breathing should be noticeably better
because your lung capacity will be greater.

Your circulation will improve and your lung functioning will
increase up to 30% within two weeks to three months after quitting.

Between one month and nine months, the cilia in your lungs will
regenerate, allowing your body to clean your lungs and reduce
infection.

One year after quitting, your risk of coronary heart disease is
half that of a smoker.

Five years after quitting, your risk of stroke is reduced to that
of a nonsmoker.

Ten years after quitting, the lung cancer death rate is about half
that of a continuing smokers. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decreases.

Fifteen years after quitting, your risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmokers.

Exercise is a great substitute for smoking. You may find that as you
exercise more, you cough more, clearing out your lungs and airways.
This is good. Most likely you-ll breath easier and build up your
endurance as you get further and further from your last cigarette.

The lungs come equipped with a self-cleaning cycle, but overloading
them with smoke or smog will gunk up the works. The cilia, or hairlike
structures in your lungs, flagellate (that-s move) upward, coaxing the
bad stuff out of the alveoli (little air sacs) and into the trachea,
where the gunk grows into a frightening reminder of why you should
have been better to your lungs to begin with. -It-s like a mucus
escalator,- says Norman Edelman, M.D., a scientific advisor to the
American Lung Association. -That-s a major form of defense. Within a
few days to a week (after quitting smoking], you start feeling better,
and you start coughing up all that bad mucus you have down there.
They will never get normal bcuz you already damaged them smoking

Tough Break
I have heard that after ten years it is as if you have never smoked. Not sure how true it is.
they told me 3 years for every year you smoked. so i smoked for 17 years means in 51 yrs or 27 more? cjhs

If youve smoked for awhile, and now youve quit smoking....do you get lung cancer from smoking before? -

If youve smoked for awhile, and now youve quit smoking....do you get lung cancer from smoking before? -

like say you have been smoking for a year or two, and you-ve just quit today.....will you still get lung cancer anyway???
You could, but the chances of that happening to you are slim compared to someone who smoked for 30+ years like my Grandfather, who passed away of lung cancer.

In school, they taught us that if you smoke for a short period of time then quit, that your lungs will go back to the way before you started smoking.
yes you can, but your chances decrease after you stop smoking.

seriously, just don-t smoke, it-s absolutely terrible for you, and all those around you.
It-s reduced but it-s more possible for an ex-smoker than a non-smoker to develop lung cancer, but that doesn-t mean that an ex-smoker will develop lung cancer, there-s just a bigger chance
First good for you on quitting.I am still trying - failing. You can get lung cancer if you have never smoked. When anyone packs in the chances of getting lung cancer from smoking decreases.
Good Luck
you could but quiting lessens the chance

Did you quit smoking more than one month ago? -

Perhaps you can tell us how you achieved it.
I quit smoking about six years ago (I honestly don-t remember -- it will be six or seven years this November). I had been smoking for about 15 years or longer, with a couple of periods thrown into the mix when I-d quit for a few months.

A friend of mine -- and co-worker, important because we spent a lot of time together smoking -- wanted to quit and wanted to start with the Great American Smoke Out. I basically agreed to stop for that one day to keep her company -- I was leery of the whole thing but we agreed that we would not smoke on that day and just...give it a whirl if it went okay. Basically, I figured if I thought in terms of quitting I would sabotage myself, but if I thought in terms of -I-m not going to smoke TODAY- I would be okay. I used the patch (as did my friend -- doing it together was probably key) -- after a couple of weeks of the patch I stopped using it. I was very low-key about it, to the extent that I really didn-t say anything at all about it -- and because I didn-t put pressure on my husband or even really mention it at all, he upped and quit about two months later. A few months into not smoking I went out with some friends for dinner and drinks and to shoot some pool -- they were smokers and I had a cigarette that night, and was fine with it -- didn-t particularly enjoy it, didn-t get any craving to start smoking again, and that was the end of it.

The keys for me:

*Not* thinking in terms of -this is it....forever.-

Doing it with a friend.

Being very low-key about it -- I didn-t go around announcing that I was quitting, or even that I was -not smoking today.- For me, that helped, because there were no issues of pride, or being perceived as a success/failure, no matter what happened.

The patch -- honestly, I have no idea if it helped in any physiological way, because I really never felt that I was having a *physiological* craving, but even if it didn-t help in that respect I do believe it helped psychologically.

Incidentally, the friend who quit with me -- and who pushed the whole quitting idea in the first place -- started to smoke again a few months later. Our other good friends at work continued to smoke, so there was certainly the usual -pressure- created by that kind of environment (we had previously taken a lot of smoke breaks together, believe me!) but I never did go back to it.

As another aside: my husband quit entirely cold turkey, no patch, no cutting back first, no nothing. He didn-t even tell me he was going to (I noticed New Year-s day that he wasn-t smoking and commented on it -- it had been a resolution apparently.) It worked for him, and he-s never gone back.

GOOD LUCK!!

ETA Wow I didn-t realize this was so long -- sorry. Hope it helps though.

ETA Another tactic that can help if you throw it into the mix -- especially if you-re also feeling/aware of the financial drawbacks of smoking -- put the money you would have spent on cigarettes aside every day, keeping a special jar or whatever for just that money, and watch that special savings grow. Use the money on some treat for yourself that you would not have ordinarily done. Or use it to get, say, your teeth whitened after you-ve been a nonsmoker for a while. (Not saying your teeth are bad, but you know what I mean!) It-s rather amazing, especially with the high cost of smoking now, to actually *see* how much money you-ve been spending on smoking that could have gone to something else.
no since i do not smoke..my uncle who has been smoking for 20 years plus quit a couuple of months ago..he did it cold turkey and he is glad the he did it after all this time.he gaine some weight but it is better than lung cancer..
Yep, 10 years ago as a matter of fact. I got tired of having to go buy them. Strange though, I quit one vice for another. I developed a taste for beer. Go figure.
good for you!! you want to quit!!! lol

and yes I did 4 months ago=]

I feel sooooo much better!!
Its amazing!!

I did it by slowly, slowing down on how much I acually did smoke.

when you get down to say 3 ciggs a day, the next just quit all together.
you-ll have the urges but they won-t be as bad as they would if you just quit all together.

good luck!!
=D
Quit smoking 2 months after smoking for 12 years. Started taking Chantix. It is kind of expensive, but well worth it. Good Luck!!!
nope, almost a year, i don-t actually like smoking thats why its easy for me to stop it, my reason of smoking is to be in with my friends and to have an impression that i rebel for something coz that time im really depressed with a family prob.

i guess, finding new and better non-smoker friends will really help, and finding a specific hobby, like sports or martial arts that will encourage you to be healthy, as of now, im enrolled at a martial arts thing and it really helps, i already stopped smoking before i got enrolled, but in stress management it helps, stress is the main reason of smoking, usually those people who are out of touch and out of time

this vice should be stopped before it got worst, a chain smoker have a strong possibility to be a drug addict, iv-e seen them turn into that
No, but I did quit smoking officially a week ago...through trial and error over the past month, I found out that the patch and an arsenal of sugarfree gum is the best way to go. It kicks cravings to the curb (more or less) while you work on your psychological addiction, which is the meaner of the two addiction aspects. Gum was a pain in the butt because you had to chew -em every hour and they tasted terrible. Cold turkey is great, if you have the willpower and the tolerance to deal with the physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms....definitely not me though. CVS has their own brand of nicotine transdermal patches now, and the same step-down program as Nicoderm CQ does for about 25% less money...I-ve been using them for the past week and they are a GODSEND!! Other things that seem to work with me are message boards; the American Lung Association has a great one, and so does quitnet.com.

PS: You don-t need to report the b*tch...I did it for you. Consider it your quit present. LOL

It took me at least 2 tries before I quit for real and the third time I quit cold turkey. I used lollypops when I was driving to kill that craving or those candy cigs the first 2 times as well. It was hard but when I used the gum the second time I thought that I stopped for good because I didn-t smoke for 7 months then I went back to smoking. The only bad thing is I gained a lot of weight and now I need to lose weight...ugh it never ends. I wrote down my goals which helped and I know I need to do that for my weight issues too. Did anyone gain a lot of weight after they quit?
The biggest reason was that after 20 years I realised that I wanted to quit more than I wanted to smoke. I was sick of being a smoker. I used patches for a while then read the Allen Carr Easyway book. It also helped to keep me motivated when I started seeing how much fitter I felt and better I looked.
It-s been 6 months now, sometimes I still have to remind myself how far I-ve come and accept that I will never have -just one-- - been there and done that, there-s no such thing!
My daughter quit by using Chantix and it worked for her. At the time I quit it wasn-t around. I quit cold turkey and I was a pack and a half a day smoker. It was tough, but I had changed my routine. I told everyone I quit, and I felt I couldn-t go back on my word. I was also in the middle of a move to keep me busy and doing a yard sale. The first 2 weeks were the hardest. I would even pray at night to help get me through it. Even after 3 years, I would crave a cigarette, but I kept telling myself if I ever pick one up again I know I wouldn-t quit. Because I had tried to quit a couple of times before. One time it was for 3 months and I thought I could smoke just one cigarette. Well, it doesn-t work that way! I have now been off of cigarettes for 18 years.
Dont use Chantix, whatever you do. I-ve heard that people who use that go into deep states of depression, suicidal thoughts, and nausea.
I used the patch which helped a little bit. It does take will power as well. There is a pretty good quit smoking website as well called Quitnet
You should check that out. Good luck to you
Cold turkey. However, I was more of a -social smoker- and smoked about 1-5 cigarrettes per day. But, I do believe going cold turkey is one of the most effective ways to quit any habit. Hard? Sure! But it almost always works once you get past the initial stage. Best of luck to you.
Okay Ive never smoke but my mom and husband did. My mom quite about a year ago using Chantix. She was a two pack a day smoker and she-s doing amazing! I highly reccomend it.

My husband smoked since he was 8! He just quit. Just stopped buying ciggarettes.
I smoked for 8 years, and I just quit 2 weeks ago, my body just said quit smoking, and I did I havent had a urge or craving to even think about it and when I actually do think about it, it just disgusts me
Laid them down. No stupid gums or patches. They just take your money and keep you from quitting properly.

If you really really want to quit, you will. It sucks at first but you can do it!!
Both myself and my partner smoked. We agreed to quit and also agreed that if we gave into the cravings for a cigarette we-d be letting each other down.
I-d rather crave nicotine than let her down -3
Well Im actually weird when it comes to smoking.... I am not addicted, I can stop and start when i like. I think my body reacts differently to the nicotine. FREAKKK!!!
As it happened, I was anxious and eager to please God. I-d been a smoker for a few years, yet it was easy.
I was -lucky- that time.
spent the summer away from home....completely different schedule and jet lag confused me for a while and then when i had cravings i would always be doing something else i had to focus on.
I never started.

Disgusting habit and I like being alive.
After many failures and cutting way back, I went cold turkey. Every failure is just one step closer to success.
by thinking of they terrable things it does to my body and i quit cold turkey after some research
Many people try like these plastic cigarettes or this chewing gum for smokers my mum is still trying to give up smoking!
I got pregnant. Made it real easy knowing there was a baby in me. Then after he was born I didn-t even fell like having one.
I never saw the point in even starting.
I would rather keep my lungs healthy, thanks.
nicotine patches a drinking water when i got cravings
DONT PUT THE CIG TO YOUR MOUTH AND LIGHT IT!!!!!!
I told the wife to slow down and use a lubricant HAAAAAAAA. D-OH.
as long as I can run 5 mile with a cig in my mouth....im not quiting
Chantix helped me...
Just did.
