BF quit smoking amp; is now depressed. How can I support him? -

He stopped smoking about 7 months ago, but was using nicotine mints for most of this time. He has been depressed and isn-t even proud of the fact that he-s come so far. He says he just wishes he could smoke again. What can I do? Advice from former smokers, please! (I never smoked.)
try to keep his mind off of it by doing some fun things...like going on walks or anything physical. try and keep him away from smokers...like don-t sit in bars and stuff like that. Try and keep him in a positive frame of mind. I-m sorry.....i-m a smoker and I tried to quit a bunch of times and never have so 7 months is really good. Find out what exactaly he is depressed about b/c more than likely he is depressed about something else and because of that wants to smoke. Good luck
i quit smoking for the last 3 months and i have no problem quitting. but if he doesnt mind dieing early he might wanna just start smoking again.

personally for me i would like to start smoking again, and it has nothing to do witht he nicotine. I feel it was alway more of a social thing. its a great time passer, esp when waiting for some one. it gives your hands something to do. it make drinking alot more fun. and most important your look that much cooler.

if he doesnt wanna quit then let him go back to smoking. Some peple have the will others dont. maybe tell him to go cold turkey, i didnt take gum or the patch to quit. i just quit like a real man.
Better you consult in the hospital . they have separate unit for those who wants to quit smoking

How To Stop Smoking Weed - 3 Big Reasons Youd Give Someone to Quit Smoking Weed Today? -

1. Smoking weed increases cancer risk, causes panic attacks - severe paranoia (including hallucinations). That-s reason enough to quit if he doesn-t want to resemble a freaked-out zombie down the line

2. Reduce dependence on illegal, painful - family-wrecking drugs. He can get into trouble with the law and cause himself - and his family - untold grief

3. Quiting will let him get back his self-esteem, moral judgment and reason-to-live by starting clean. Analyzing the emotional states that cause him to smoke will also get him to quit
because your emotional development stops from the moment you take drugs, and only continues when you stop
because it makes you more susceptible to paranoia, and other mental health issues
and finally, for many people, weed is a -gateway- drug which leads to them taking, and becoming addicted to stronger drugs.
causes parinoir
efects your health
make feel and look crap

its not a good habit u strt off on weed 1st all drug usrs do thn u gt adtd n need sumfin strngr and get hookd on coke etc...
thn it will be even hardr stop tht u cnt stop bcuz u r adictd to this..
yeah it mite seem cool but trust me u will live with regret
yo i just stopped myself. the reason i stopped where, its too expensive of a habit, its no good for your health, and it makes you stupid. overall its has its good and bad sides, but you know its up to you to find reasons to stop

I am 29 and I quit smoking a few weeks ago. I am using the patch for help.? -

I-ve never been a crying woman - NEVER. Now, all I want to do is cry. Even with the patch. I feel fine, great actually, but all of the sudden something very simple upsets me and I cry. WHY?? What is wrong with me?
You-re going through withdrawal -- the patch reduces symptoms, but it doesn-t eliminate them. When I stopped, I was overcome with regrets, over the damndest thing! And it-s normal to become hyperemotional for a while.

But -- note that nicotine is a natural anti-depressant and stopping smoking can have a temporary depressing effect in some people. If you find yourself depressed, talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for an antidepressant. Wellbutrin/Zyban is a drug that has been found to be effective both in helping people stop smoking and in treating depression, and might be a good choice.

I quit smoking 23 days ago and Im still doing it tough? -

Me and my husband gave up on July 1st.
I still crave them and I still get cranky. I really struggle to not go and buy a pack. The lozenges and gum make me feel sick and they dont ease the craving. My doctor told me that the nicotine is out of your system after 2 weeks but the addiction is the hardest to kick. SHE-S TELLIN ME!!
Non smokers seem to think its a breeze to give up.

What can I do?
I keep busy, chew gum but I need to do more.
It took a good month for the bad cravings to stop, for me anyway. It seemed like cold turkey was the best way to go. i smoked a lot for a long time, but finally feel free! It-s good you and your husband quit, but remember, if he caves in. Your not free to cave in too. Be strong, you-ll be so happy that you made it through...
I was a smoker for 25 years and I had quit smoking for over six times ,but never really quit smoking before.Just after I read that quit smoking program, I realized how easy quitting smoking was.I am a non-smoker now! I highly recommend this program to you.It really works. You can check out

Good luck!
Hey here.....Quitting smoking is the toughest thing you will probaby ever do. I have a yahoo group/website for people who are quitting with extensive files, links, news etc. that should answer any question you might have. Feel free to check us out and ....good luck and Take Care.........R\

Keep something nearby for sticking in your mouth such as a straw or a toothpick, anything that makes you have that -feeling- of a cigarette in your mouth.
I am not a smoker so I have no idea what the addiction is like but my mom quit 6 months ago and my grandfather quit 2 years ago. They both have said they still have cravings. My grandfather had them bad in the morning. His cancer was enough motivation to stick it out. My mother has been drinking Orange Juice, when she had went to a quit smoking club years ago they said OJ puts back something in your body that the nicotine takes out. I hope this helps a little. Keep toughing it out.
A very wise decision indeed. Beef up ur will power and do not fall back

If lozenges and gums do not work for you. Try a natural remedy instead. I used a natural remedy to curb my withdrawal symptoms and nicotine craving called -Crave Rx-. It is effective with no side effects.

visit the following source for further information.

Good luck!!
Its sooo hard. I have not smoked in about five years and I still get cravings so bad i think i might die. Its awful. Be prepared you are going to be cranky and moody and just feeling awful for awhile. But when its all over and done you will feel better.
pray that the lord will help you overcome

If you were to quit smoking cold turkey, what would you make your last cigarette? -

would it be before you go to bed, when you wake up, or some time during the day? why?
6 p.m. in the evening. I quit on 9/6/2009 at 6 p.m. not for any profound reason but that-s when I ran out of cigarettes. My reason for quitting was anger. I got tired of paying taxes out the kazoo so some politician can wantonly waste the money on some insanity. Anger is a good reason to quit. I haven-t missed the cigarettes nearly as much as I thought. And, I really like the taste of cigarettes. But I really hate politicians and taxes. Try it. Get mad and you, too, can waste the money you save on wanton insanity of your choosing. Screw the politicians of all parties.

Has anyone ever tried hypnosis to quit smoking? -

It will cost 98 dollars and I am seriously thinking of trying it.
It will only work if you really want it to work.

There was one case where the hypnotist gave up on a person whom he could not hypnotise so he told the smoker, who still smokes, that he was a resistant subject.

You cannot be hypnotised against your will. You must be willing and wishing.
I have noticed with alot of things that if you really want to do it you can and on your own. Well maybe with a little help just pray that God will help you quit and just believe and stay strong and you can do it with gods help.
Smoking is expensive, quitting is free
I smoked for many many years, I quit cold turkey.
It was not difficult at all. I did it ,,,, You can you
Spend your $98 on something of value
My sister in law tried it before it was legal in the USA.. she went to Canada... She is still smoking. She said for a few weeks she smoked less... but it did not make her quit... and eventually shortly she was up to her normal amount again... I don-t know if that is just how it happened for her.. maybe it works for others.. but I personally would not recommend it!

Hmmmm.... I am reading some other posts... My sister in law didn-t get a colored card... maybe there are different hypnosis techniques?? Or maybe what my sister in law had in Canada is different then what they do now.. I don-t know....
MANY people have tried it. It requires motivation and I-m not sure hypnosis itself provides any additional help.
My brother-in-law tried it about 5 years ago and to this day he hasn-t smoked one cigarette. Give it a try but I will say that it works on some and not on others. He paid $100.00 for his session. And was given a colored card to where if he ever got the urge to smoke, he was to get that card out and look at it. I don-t quite understand what it has to do with helping him fight the urge, but he said that it worked.
I hope this video helps you to not smoke again
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/756818/quit_smoking/

Good Luck!
My uncle was hypnotized to stop smoking and it worked. However, he said you have to really want to quit or it won-t work.
if you are a heavy smoker, why not just have a try?
I haven-t used self-hypnosis for smoking, but I have used it for weight loss and anxiety relief. I-ve seen positive results for both. At the very least, I get a great night-s sleep when I listen to them when I go to bed. They put me right to sleep! I have used audio books from
http://www.audible.com
and
http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com

I was treated for depression by a doctor . It works only if you believe.
Give it a try..A friend of mine used it to help lose weight and it worked very well. It really helped him stop snacking and cut wayyyy back on junk food. The therapist just told him, under hypnosis, that when he ate junk it would taste awful and the more he ate the worse he would feel..it was really cool.
Hello There,
I have heard some good things about quitting with hypnosis, but I personally don-t believe that much in it. Just a matter of prefference I guess. I know hypnosis may not work for everyone. There is an all natural quit smoking program that you can try for free, you-ll find the link at the bottom of this page.

My wife smoked for over 10 years and when she found out that she was preagnant with our now newborn 3 months old daughter, she had promised me that if I found a good solution for quitting, she will try her best to kick the habit.

Well in my spare time I started researching online for quit smoking programs, meanwhile she was trying out patches and gums that you can buy at grocery stores and adventually they would not work for her.

After about a week of researching I had stumbled over a website that really impressed me on what they had to offer and that they actually say that they can almost guarantee your success, and most importantly that you can try it out for free.

The company has been around for over 20 years now and they have helped over a million smokers quit since and their kit has everything that you possibly need to help you quit smoking, I thought WoW that is impressive.

I went ahead and ordered the free trial for my wife (only paid for shipping) and she has quit smoking in just two weeks and she doesn-t want to hear about or smell another cigarette again in her life :)

Now it is up to you, but since my wife has quit, I was so happy about her success, so much so that I had built a small review site of the product to also help other people quit, you can check it out at;
http://time2quitnow.com
if you want to find out more.
Thanks for reading my short story, I hope it helps, good luck and stay healthy.

I am trying on the patch but I am getting very strange dreams. With the patch I don-t have any cravings but I have to stop those as well.

For those that say Will Power is all you need are full of crap. Nicotine affects your brain and your body. If it was just about the mental aspects Will Power would be enough but it is also physical. Some people experience pain when quitting while their bodies adjust, that takes more than Will Power to deal with.

Mark Twain said, -Quitting smoking is easy. I-ve done it a thousand times.-

Positive attitude, supportive family and friends, a system (patch, gum, etc.) you will soon be smoke free. This is what I tell myself and I know I will be a healthy nonsmoker soon.

Good Luck!!
hi Michael ..

actually there is no -best- way to quit, if there was everyone would do it, and we wouldn-t ask the question..lol ok, many who try to quit smoking, may have to use multiple attempts, as possibly use different methods. myself it took me several attempts.. i have found a couple of things, in addition to -not quit quitting-, i found that in the end, a support group did for me what i couldn-t do alone... i found the advise of those who had already quit, as well as the fellowship of other new quitters, helped when nothing else worked..

today i have over 5 years clean time from tobacco.. because of my participation in nicotine anonymous... meetings are held in many areas, as well as voice meetings online!!!, you can Attend a meeting on your computer..

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
Zyban worked for me, although there were some side affects (not everyone has them) such as insomnia, weird and freaky dreams and little or no patience for the first few days. After the first week though, all side affects disappeared.

Will my lungs repair themselves after quitting smoking and how long does it take? -

Will my lungs repair themselves after quitting smoking and how long does it take? -

I recently quit smoking and I-m very proud of myself because it was the hardest thing I have ever done. Now that I think I-m in the clear from going back to it, I-m wondering if my lungs will undue the damage I have done to them and how long it will take. I smoked for about 19 years.
Congratulations!

There are three general areas of damage caused by cigarettes:

- Functional problems. Things like no taste, no smell, hacking cough, energy level will return within a few days after quitting smoking.

- Cancer and heart disease. The risk of cancer drops gradually after quitting, and levels out after about 5 years at only slightly more than the average person. In other words, if you quit for at least 5 years and don-t get cancer in that time, your chances of getting it are then only a little more than the average person. Similar arguments hold for your risk of heart disease.

- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) - Emphysema, which is destruction of the walls of the alveoli, will never recover, but it will get worse with continued smoking. Chronic bronchitis, which is damage to the walls of the bronchioles, will sometimes get better, but again, it will get worse with continued smoking.

If that-s not reason enough to quit smoking I don-t know what else is. Good luck and congratulations again!
They will repair in a very few years. Unlikely that you have any permanent damage.
I know the feeling.
Congrats on quitting - I quit 3 years ago. I-m not sure but I think it takes 1 year for every 5 you smoke, so in your case approx 4 years.
Yes, your lungs will repair themselves. However, they will never be as efficient as they were before you started smoking. Give it a few years, and your lungs will be as good as they can get.

Congratulations on quitting. I hope you understand what an amazing accomplishment that this is! Good luck in your -healthier- future!
THE DAY you quit smoking, is THE DAY the risk of getting cancer goes down. However, your lungs take 7-8 years to recover. but maybe getting in shape and eating healthier, and getting outside more will speed up the process.

Have a peppermint each time you crave a cigarette, the craving will go away.

And to have lots of water, and the nicotine will wash out

Make sure you get a lot of fresh air and exercise, it will help your brain recover

have faith
ya totally! at the most 5 years. congrats!
After 19 years of constant smoke/tar, I doubt your lungs will heal.

HELP! :) Have you ever quit smoking before? -

HELP! :) Have you ever quit smoking before? -

I quit smoking three weeks ago. I wore a patch for the first two weeks, and I-m no longer wearing one. I wasn-t sleeping very well while using the patch.

I-m pretty much OK now... but the cravings are so frequent still! It-s torture sometimes.

What I was wondering is... if you have quit smoking before, how long did it take for you to stop having cravings?

Or... at the very least... how long before the cravings became much less frequent?
I quit smoking several years ago using the patch. I also took Zyban. I believe it-s an anti depressant that they-ve discovered helps with the mental cravings of smoking. I quit the patch after a month and kept on the zyban for a couple of more months. It seemed to work great for me. Unfortunately I started smoking again a year later when my dad died.. so the idea is always in your head.. you just have to beat it.
About a month. It helped that my boyfriend really hated to see me smoke. Try to hang around nonsmoking friends and stay away from smokey places.
never because i don-t smoke

wanna chat with someone who-s cool.i-m always there.
prithvi_calicut@yahoo.com
Cravings come and go. But they only last literally for like 20 - 40 seconds. I quit cold turkey and was smoking 4 packs a day when I quit. That was back in 94.
Never started smoking
I think you should take another whack at the patch. Try putting it on first thing when you wake up, and take it off at least a couple of hours before you go to sleep. They really only deliver nicotine for twelve hours, so if you don-t sleep much anyway, they may not be enough. I find they DO help though, a lot. Also, they really do take longer than just a couple of weeks. I-m using the step down series; level one is the same as one pack of cigarettes a day; use them for at least three or four weeks, maybe even more. Then, go to step 2 patches, which are about one-third less strong. Use them for several weeks as well, before going to step 1. If you rush or try to take a short cut, you are probably going to backslide and start smoking again.

The other habits are not going to be helped by the patch. I find tic-tacs or altoids to be good if I want a cigarette, or, sometimes I go brush my teeth if my mouth feels tingly. Either of these tricks keep you from eating to give your mouth something to do, which is the real reason many people gain weight when they quit.

Personally the patches make me dream a lot, I like that! I have only smoked once in three months now, and that one time was two months ago. Good luck!
I quit 4 years ago and still get an occasional craving. If you-ve made it three weeks you-re over the hardest part, just don-t give in, good luck
I keep tryen but I have not succeded yet. If you to really want to quit and make that dession. I keep tryen to do it for everyone else but me thats why it hasn-t worked for me. Good luck to ya!
Can-t help you with this but, in answer to your answer on mine about my avatar being a guy my answer is:

is there any term for what i just described? i hope so. ty for the one who will answer this
arvin, Smoking addiction can harm your health. Many people have lost jobs, family, and loved ones because they could not break thier smoking habits. I recommend you seek some help. I found a site that has addiction information and a directory of addiction treatment centers so you can help.

Get healthy!
I do not know the term for that, just think about these below :

When smokers quit -- What are the benefits over time?

20 minutes after quitting:
Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.

12 hours after quitting:
The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.

2 weeks to 3 months after quitting:
Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

1 to 9 months after quitting:
Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.

1 year after quitting:
The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker-s.

5 years after quitting:
Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.

10 years after quitting:
The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker-s. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease, too.

15 years after quitting:
The risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker-s.

Quit Smoking - Any herbal helpers? -

Quit Smoking - Any herbal helpers? -

I have a friend that is trying to quit smoking for good...I was wondering if there were any herbs that can help.
Nope but there is vaporizers
popcorn maybe try gum.
st johns wart works I hear but it makes you hungry
No, but you could tell her to give me all her money, so she won-t be able to buy cigarettes. That should do it. :)

My mom quit with gum.
She was a smoker for 5 years, and she hasn-t touched one in about 12 years now.
To give up smoking is quite easy. I have done it a hundred times. But seriously the urge to smoking can be controlled by drinking green tea or water whenever the urge arises. Chewing gum also helps.

There are many other ways. The American Cancer Society offers a Guide to Quitting Smoking.
This is going to sound a little strange....I-m well aware....

1) Kava Kava tea - to -take the edge off- - because you are irritable as heck when you stop
2) Psyilium (the stuff in metamucil) - because wwith drawlmakes many people constipated
3) something to help you sleep - benedryl or an herbal supplement that contains valerian, or hops, or passion flower - because for some reason you get sleepy as heck during the day (see #4) and can-t sleep at night
4) green tea, or coffee - in small doses - because withdrawl makes you sleepy during the day. If this person has been using a source of caffiene all along, she will need much smaller doses - nicotine blocks caffiene uptake (and vice versa, which is why people who do both tend to do both heavily) - so a smaller dose will give her a bigger boost.

Lots of folks suggest the herb lobelia for cravings - because tobacco is a member of the lobelia family...never did a darned thing for me or most the people who I sold it to....

Good Luck - and to use the phrase of the American Lung Society - -Dont quit quitting- - the average person has to -quit- eleven times before they -quit- for good.

May you have a New Year with comfort, laughter and joy
Tink
I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article:

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!
Matthew.
There are countless herbs that can be used to confuse your subconscious to believe you are smoking tobacco. Unfortunately however, there are no herbs that have medicinal value in effectively treating nicotine withdrawal, as far as I know. Like any other withdrawal stage, the best thing you can do is use lower and lower doses of the substance over an extended period of time. In other words, start by limiting your friend to 3 cigarettes a day for a week. As every new week comes to be, reduce his/her limit to one less than the previous week. After 1 a day is reached, the next week limit to 1 a day every second day, and the system goes on.. To avoid relapse, it-s best if you or someone else that knows your friend should buy the cigarettes for your friend, as to prevent them from taking more than they are supposed to be smoking.
Marijuana is famous for its many redeeming qualities. One of them is that Marijuana can be a great tool for people who are quitting nicotine. It has no habit forming qualities and takes the edge off of the nicotine craving.
Although, it is illegal...
Not herbal medicines, but something that treats the underlying need to smoke.

Quit smoking? -

i am trying to stop smoking. any good ideas?
Stop buying fags, and stop buying the cigs too! ;-) Don-t hang around with friends who smoke all the time, don-t go places where they sell cigs. Eliminate cigs from your life as much as possible in every way. Change your mental attitude of them to objects of disgust. That ought to do it.
Good luck. I tried once. It was the worst six hours of my life.

Just make sure that you are strong enough to do it. Nicotine patches are a good idea but they only work with added willpower. No willpower and you are screwed. Nicotine is a very addictive substance.
nicotine patches?
a friend of mine put up pictures of smokers- lungs all around her house - that definitely did the trick for her!

good luck with it
Give up two things at the same time, cigarettes and ... something else like chocolate, or whatever you would turn to instead of smoking. Then, when you feel bad, and you will (I smoked for 30 years before giving up 4 years ago) blame the feeling on the other item you gave up. It is like a fence between you and the ciggies. Try not to climb the fence and you will stay away from the ciggies. If it is chocs/sweets that you choose as the fence, it also saves the increased weight associated with giving up the weed. Good luck. It can be done, honestly. x
try cutting down first and changing the habitual fags like first one in the morning, keep telling yourself youll lite up in ten minutes etc...i used to smoke thirty a day im now down to eight but i dont want to give up completely, its my only pleasure
There is an all natural herbal and aromatherapy program that has worked great for people. You can get them on ebay. Just do a search for: Natural Stop Smoking Program (Herbal - Aromatherapy)You-ve got to quit, as you already know, it will kill you!
I know a friend who quit smoking b/c they saw the organs of a smoker who died from lung cancer...
Ask at your medical centre, they will have all the latest and best up to date info for you. I stopped but my brother did not, he died of cancer
Will power! It-s mind over matter, my husband has given it up and hasn-t had one in over 4 months. He got some of the pachages at the start to use if he needed them but he used one and went from there
drink more tea will help u to smoke less...that-s what i do
mayby its the sicological thought of actualy doing the act for comfort,if so,you will need to speak to a sicologist or if its just the thrill you get from smoke comming out of your mouth i would suggest nicotene gum or patches
suicide, it-s a sure way to make sure you stop smoking.
Good luck I smoke I know of a few that tried to stop with everything you can imagine and also a few that have stopped without anything if you really want to stop you will if your not sure don-t think anything will help
I know 3 people who were very very heavy smokers for years. They all read the Alan Carr book on how to stop smoking and none of them have touched a cigarette since. Apparently it-s excellent! Try it! Another idea is to visit a cardiao-thoracic intensive care unit and see what smoking has done to some of our patients! Surgeries have smoking cessation nurses who can give you advice! Maybe the new law coming in on April 2nd that will ban smoking in public places will help you! Some of my friends are hoping to give up then! (I am an ex-smoker, not just some non smoker preaching to you!)
nicorette chewing gum worked for me. been 1 year now and its a real rollercoaster ride .you gotta really want this and if you stop then have a smoke don,t think you have to start smoking again . having a smoke them first couple of weeks makes all the difference so long as your cutting down. chew as many gums as u need don,t follow the packet instructions and try and chew before u want to smoke that nails the craving before it gets to bad . down side to this is it tastes awful but u get used to it just about and you will probably get a dicky tummy. good luck man oh buy a bike thats good to see how much fitter u get each week you will be amazed
oh my god good luck
there is this a clinic in ireland, they keep you there for 3 weeks as that is how long it takes for nicotine to come out your system. but its expensive so have you tried cooking?
smoked for 20 years and managed to give up easily, i also gave up half a lung (a quite painful and degrading process) and have been unable to work for 5 months and next month i start chemo. give up now, you probably wont enjoy the two tubes you have to have stitched into your body to drain the gunk from your lungs into see through plastic jars that you carry around with you for 4 or 5 days . give up please, everyone thinks it will never happen to them but believe me it does.
Yes! I quit smoking on 6th October 1997 when I misunderstood the surgeon as I came round from gallbladder removal. I thought he said I had the symptoms of Angina - and I was so angry because I planned to retire in 1999 and so frightened I would die that I never had another cigarette. Six weeks later he told me I had the symptoms of Apnoea [Sleep deprivation] but I had already given up smoking for 6 weeks by then - and do you know I honestly don-t think about it at all now!
Nope! Sorry!

How can i get a hold of some dopamine? literly i need some alternate of this since i quit smoking? -

Heh

You can-t take dopamine itself because it doesn-t cross the blood/brain barrier. People with Parkinson-s Disease take l-dopa to increase dopamine levels, but I don-t think you-d want to do that!

Any pleasurable activity or drug causes the brain to release dopamine where you want it, but the drugs will merely postpone your withdrawal or deepen your addiction and many of them are worse for you than smoking.

So I-d say just ride it out until your brain gets back into balance. If you can-t, get some nicotine lozenges, they-ll ameliorate withdrawal at the cost of stretching it out. Or you can just use them forever -- they contain nicotine so they give you a buzz but they don-t cause cancer. Or get a prescription for Zyban (Wellbutrin), an anti-smoking pill and antidepressant that works as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It increases the amount of dopamine in your reward pathways, but it can have some serious side effects.

Im thinking of trying hypnosis to quit smoking. Has anyone tried it? -

I-ve tried the patch, the gum, Zyban. I never find it hard to quit, but I always, always find it hard to stay quit.
I-d like to try something different, and I-ve heard that hypnosis can be good for people like me, who have trouble with maintaining nonsmoker status, for more long term help. Any thoughts?
Hypnosis let me quit smoking, give it a try. I left my cigarettes with the hypnotist, as he suggested. He gave me a word to think of when I felt the urge to smoke. I wrote the word down and posted it around my house and even on my PC at work. I was able to stop smoking that same day .
I guess I gave to much info ... Oh well short and simple seems to work ...

my boyfriends mom tried it, and she said it made her want to smoke even more...lol, I guess it really does depend on the person

In addition:
My dad quit smoking about five years and ago, he used a combination of the nicotrol nasal spray and Zyban. It-s really expensive, but it works. He had been smoking since he was 15, he was 35 when he quit.
In 1993 I went to a group hypnosis with my son-in-law. I had no intentions of quitting, he wanted to quit and needed someone to go with him. I wound up quitting that very night and he didn-t.
I-m still smoke free!!
I am a Hypnotist and can tell you I have helped many people quit. However, a few words of caution.

Try to stay away from Group sessions, they are alot less successful then one on one sessions.

Second stay away from someone who wants to sell you a 6 (or more) session program. They are taking you for a ride.

Stay away from -guarantees- of success or money back. These are usually -hypnosis- factories based solely on getting in as many people in as possible on the hopes of a money back guarantee.

Make sure at the end of your sessions the hypnotist is going to give you a CD to help you through the -ruff- times if you have any. You don-t want to have to run back to him or her every time you hit a bump in the road.

And last, make sure you want to quit for the right reasons or it won-t work. You have to want to quit for yourself. Not because the Doctor told you you had to, or your wife/husband said you had to. The Hypnotist should ask you why you want to quit. If they don-t, look for another one. The reason they are asking is to guage if the hypnosis will work for you. A good hypnotist will actually turn you away if your motivation is not in the right place.

Good luck !
biend an x-smoker myself, i quit -cold turkey- about 5 years ago, but i had tried serveral times before. i guess i just made up my mind and did it. i had smoked for 10 years and was up to a carton a week.
hypnosis depends on people receives it. not all people can accepts that treatment. try like this, run far away if you spot some cigar,
Well, first of all why did you even want to smoke when you already know what smoking does to your body?

And yes, hypnosis will help but, it usually depends on smokers because your level of smoking is probably different from other smokers, so if I were you I-ll give hypnosis a shot and if it doesn-t work ask your doctor what-s best for you.

But, good luck about quitting of smoking. =D

i have one pack of cigs left, ive gone from 20 cigs aday to 3 cigs aday over a month, and wanna quit after the pack i brought today. Im thinking of using nicotine patehes, anyone have any other methods that have worked for them?
get people involved. i quit two months ago. relapsed years ago but get people involved. tell ur close friends , family your quitting. so they help you. support you. and when u decide to relapse or think about smoking. they will be there to watch ur downfall and laugh at you. and u wont want to let them down. yeah try the patches. although they didnt work for me, i just had to do it cause im a diabetic as well. and people are telling me left and right if i didnt stop im gonna die faster than i know it. and being only 18 its not too smart. so i had to. think about you.. what problems do you have? any diseases anything at all.. that complicates more with smoking? every cigarette takes 5 minutes of ur life away.. think about it.

chantix isnt bad either, ive heard it has helped people stop.. but its also how much are u willing to quit.
When I joined the church of God, I quit smoking after 1 year that co-member discovered it. According to word of God, nicotine makes our lungs dirty, so we cannot breathe and nicotine bars food nutrients such as protein. so we wrinkles, gets old and have poor resistance to bacteria.
Smoking is not one that can boast our ego. 1 stick lessen our life for 1 year. So drinking is better either. To remove nicotine, try intake of capsule esqualene sold at drug store.
hello.
First set a date of quitting ill set the date for you 12th December 2008.
Then mark the day on your calendar.
Make a consultation with your doctor before the date, ask for advise on chantix, Bupropion all medicines used for quitting smoking.
Next involve your friends and ask them to monitor your progress.
Studies show that if you are able to remain on schedule and dont smoke for 6 weeks after the assigned date, you have a 80% chance of quitting.
Hope this helps! good luck!
Hey man

This seems to be working for my friends. Looks bit silly but no harm in trying.

Tie a rubber band to your hand and when ever you feel like smoking, just pull the rubber band (not too hard) and leave it. You will obviously feel the pain slightly.

Now this is the theory behind it, when you release the rubber band, you get the pain and the brain sends the signal that a pain has occured and that takes priority compared to a feeling that you want to smoke. Basically your body do not want to get any pain, so your brain automatically adjusts to the system that if you feel like smoking, then a pain is going to occur (because u will be pulling the rubber band) and will eventually stop the urge to smoke.

You could try this and inform us. :)

go to your doctor and get Chantix...works wonders! you dno-t crave them and it-s amazing

I quit smoking 12 weeks ago but now i cant kick the gum. What are the long term affects of nicotine gum? -

the same as nicotine! You are very addicted to nicotine and at least you don-t have hte extra pollutants and yellow teeth. You are one step down now so at least celebrate that! Otherwise let your body use the gum for a little while then decrease your gum by a peice a day every week. First week take away one peice every day. The next week take away two etc. You should get down to one peice and then finally you will be done, don-t try cold turkey you could have withdraw symtpoms
here are a couple webites i think u might find helpful:

however, they dont say to much simply because there isnt a lot of information found on them but it stills has some info.
These are really good tips I have heard to stop smoking. Hope they help.

Because a smoker forms the habit of putting something in their mouth, and it-s like always a cigarette. you will need something else to put into your mouth, like lollipops.

Have a peppermint each time you crave a cigarette, the craving will go away somehow.

Be sure to have lots of water, the nicotine will wash out within 48 - 72 hours. Let-s say, the same amount as some scientist discovered. 6 - 8 glasses a day.

Make sure you get a lot of fresh air and exercise, it will help your brain recover

Have faith. Thinking you can-t do it over and over won-t help.

Long-term Use of Nicotine Gum Is Associated With Hyperinsulinemia and Insulin Resistance
This is an excellent question b/c i currently trying to quit, and am on the gum. And i was wondering the same thing, since it doesn-t have all the tar, and poisons, and cancer causing cargingins (sp?) like an actual cigarette, only the nicotine, will it then cause any harm at all?

Looking forward to seeing the answers u receive.
Penis size will shrink and you will gain an affinity for malt balls and watching old Pee Wee Herman shows.

I quit smoking five days ago? -

I quit smoking last sunday and wanted to know how long it would take for my lungs to completely recuperate. I didn-t used to smoke that much(two to five cigs a day for about 3 years or so) so i-m not worried really. I-m just curious to know how long my lungs will get back to 100 per cent.
My daughter just did a report on this the other day for school and found this website to be helpful ...

http://www.ciggyfree.com/cigblog/2007/09…

Beleive it or not, effects start taking place about 8 hours after your last cigarette and take up to 15 years to become like someone who has never smoked. It truly is amazing when you think about it. Congrats on quitting, I know it is hard but its one of the best decisions you will ever make,
congrats on quitting thats great:) I quit smoking before and like you at the time I wasn-t smoking over 5-6 a day at the time. Although I only quit for 3 months I coould feel a real difference after 2 weeks and my lungs felt great after 2 months....unfortunately I started up again after the 3 months and I am still smoking and smoking more than I was prior to quitting the first time. :( i hope to quit sooon. Best of luck to you:)

I quit smoking and now I have dry skin, menstual changes, abdominal cramps, and constipation. Help!? -

I quit smoking and now I have dry skin, menstual changes, abdominal cramps, and constipation. Help!? -

I feel like I-m falling apart and shrivelling into a prune! It has been 1 1/2 months since my quit and I very quickly started getting really strange symptoms which are just getting worse.

These include

1) peeling, dry skin all over my body, especially on my face which has broken out in a red rash. My skin burns all over it is so dry.

2) a strange sharp and pulsing pain in my lower abdomen, near my ovary (but may not be) which comes and goes. It feels different than bowel/gas pain

3) constipation, with (sorry for too much info) sticky/smelly stool

4) painful heart palpitations

5) mood swings/building anxiety (although these could easily be related to the quit itself)

6) chronic and painful headaches

7) feeling dehydrated all of the time even though I am not

I can-t think of any recent changes that would cause this except for the quitting.

Could quitting have triggered a dormant illness? If so, what could it be?
What you have is called -Quitter-s Flu-.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms:
Mood Swings
Headaches
Tightness in the chest
Constipation, stomach pain, gas
Dry mouth
Sore/dry tongue and/or gums
Insomnia, or sleeping too much
Fatigue
Cough
Sore throat

Dry skin is very common during the winter months.

Chest pain is probably caused by anxiety. And since you admit to having anxiety, are you eating more or less since you-ve quit?

1 1/2 months and still having symptoms... seems too long. See a doctor.
You need to see your family doctor, as nobody here is fully qualified to answer this question. And if a person claims to be a nurse or doctor, you really don-t know if they are being truthful.
~Your mood swings and anxiety are the only symtoms that can be associated with the fact that you quit smoking.
~If you are constipated, then you may not be drinking enough juices or water. You could not be eating enough fruit and vegetables. Many medications can cause constipation as well.
~Chronic headaches means that they have been occuring many times for a very long time. This can be caused by smoking itself, and by quiting. There are MANY reasons for headaches and you should consult your doctor.
~ Many people are dehydrated, yet dont realise that they are. You are constipated, so maybe you are a little dehydrated. Dry skin can also indicate dehydration as well as not enough fruits and vegetables.( There are secrets in fruit and vegetables that help moisturise skin! )See your doctor.

The best thing for you to do is see you doctor as soon as you can, due to the heart palpitations.
I honestly do wish you well, and hope you over come these symptoms. Please, see your doctor!
:o)
YEAH CONGRATS.. you have done the hard yard. for your skin, abominal pain and palpations see a dr. Colonics and acidophilous and bifidious could help your bowel. take care. You don-t say your age but could early menopause. You need to check your hormone levels. BEST TO SEE DR.
1. See your doctor about all these symptoms. They are somewhat normal for nicotine withdrawl, but seem severe.

2. If you smoked a lot for many years, your body is cleansing itself from all the nicotine! Your body is also adjusting to not having the constant stimulation of a very poweful drug. The constipation, headaches, mood changes, menstral problems even skin symptoms make sense to me, especially if you smoked for many years. Nicotine works on all systems of the body by altering the chemical receptor sites on most of your body cells. It effects every body system. The health benefits of quitting far outweigh withdrawal symptoms.

3. I would suggest doubling or tripling your water intake, increasing your exercise (both with help with constipation)

4. It will probably take 6 months to feel completely healthy

5. Don-t discount the psychological effects of quitting!! Cigarettes are a real drug addiction with all the physical and psychological aspects that go along with addiction!

6. Most people attempt to quit about 5-6 times before they fully kick the habit - keep on truckin-
at least you don-t have cancer, emphazema, Except #5 none of these are caused by quitting smoking, there is simply another reason, it has gotten colder all over the region lately so that can expalin #1 and #7, stress can easily cause #2, 3, 4,and 6. Whatever the cigarettes were helping you with in terms of coping are still there, now you have to work on them.
Geez...and I always thought it was smoking that was bad for your health, not quitting.

If I didn-t know better, I-d think you were trying to convince yourself that you-d be better off and healthier as a smoker.
It is your body fixing itself, it will go away. it still would not hurt to see a Doctor; and remember it is still far better than the torture of dying slowly from any combination of cancer {can cause different types not just lung cancer}, COPD, Emphysema, bronchitis, heart disease and stroke, and seeing your loved ones{ children, spouse etc} suffer emotionally from watching you die in tremendous pain and agony. That may sound harsh, but it unfortunately is very true. Also i agree with some of the others here too, we all seem to have some very good points for you.

P.S. Sex tends to get better;better erections for men, wetter {you know what!} for women.
this may not have anything to do with smoking at all but congrats for quiting! its the best thing u could have done 4 urself, i need to quit to, anyways back to u, u probably need to see a doctor and tell him or her these symptoms it sounds like it may be something else..... hope all is ok
treat your complaints symptomatically. whatever u do, don-t return to smoking.
