Does anyone have any tips on how to quit smoking cold turkey? -

quitting when things are good in your life is a good time. other than that, there really aren-t any tips other than to resist the urge. the more you try to quit, the more likely you will be successful at quitting. oh, and gum doesn-t always help, nor does the patch, etc. so, yes, cold turkey is usually the way to go. try quitting on a relaxing vacation. that is what i did - i have been smoke free for 4-5 months. ok, so i had 2 in that time, but they made me not want anymore.

oh yeah, and it isn-t always about the chemical withdrawal... for me it was all about the habbit - -breaks- from everyday life that were the toughest to conquer. the whole -buying other brands- doesn-t work either. that isn-t quitting cold turkey anyhow.

good luck - if at first you don-t succeed, try - try again... and again...
First, accept that you will never -not want a cigarette- and realize that it will be a lifelong temptation that you will have to resist.

Second, make small changes to your everyday routine that involved places and times you always smoked (I smoked when I put my makeup on in the morning, so I started putting my makeup on in another room with no ashtray...the hardest was not smoking while I drove).

Third, don-t expect other people not to smoke around you. That-s a cop out. You are quitting for you, and only you can quit smoking.

Fourth, learn a replacement behavior. Try not to make it eating (just an oral stimulation replacement). Maybe go for a walk, learn to knit, something to retrain your mind from wanting a cigarette.

Fifth, start taking deep cleansing breaths and visualize the clean air helping to cleanse and heal your dirty, clogged lungs.

Sixth, keep track on a piece of paper how much money you saved every day by not buying cigarettes - it will add up quick!

Seventh, look into the future and see yourself as a non-smoker. You won-t have to stand out in the cold or heat to smoke because it is so socially unacceptable.

Good luck from a former 2 1/2 pack a day Winston smoker. I haven-t smoked in 9 years. The biggest reason I won-t start again is because quitting is hard!
Just be REALLY determined!!! Only you can do it and as the days, weeks ,months pass keep congratulating yourself . I am now 5months cigarette free and so happy about it. I don-t pretend it is easy but it gets better! Keep busy, spare time is difficult cos you want one so much!
Good Luck!
I have tried many times and just restarted. I have tried everything even smoke away last week. I quit for 12 years many years ago and started back after me and my wife broke up. I have not been able to quit after that. I have too many problems with my job and women. It seems to be my way to get away from it all.

So life has to be in good order and you have to just simply pick a day and be strong and quit. I was able to quit for about 4 months a couple of years ago. But that was because I got sick for a week and did not smoke because I did notwant to smoke while I was sick and just did not smoke after I got better. Then I started back. The want for a smoke is all ways with you after you quit no matter how long it has been.
Have a friend drop u off in the woods for 2 weeks with no smokes and no way to get them.
Information that iv been taught is that it only takes 72 hours for all the chemicals to get out of your system, after that it is all mental you just have to learn tech. to deal with the cravings
Smoke ham instead.
Wellbutrin.
Stops the cravings by the end of the first or second day. Helped my wife, twice.
I know what you-re saying. Why twice? The first time was so easy to quit, she didn-t respect it. She figured she could take a puff here, smoke while drinking there, but she woke the dragon and started back again. Then, she had to visit her doc and get the Welbutrin, again.
Now, she is back on the wagon.
yes its simple buy a brand of cigs u dont like i mean realy hate the **** or buy one u like the least eat soomthin u hate then smoke itll cause u to get a perm bad taste whn u think of cigs plus throw all ur cigs out dont lock them up dont hide them throw them the **** out ill wait.......................done it yet..............gooood no buy candy cigs a **** load of them everytime u get a craving stick it in ur mouth like its a cig and get the patch and get pictures

Good! I-m glad you-ve decided to stop. Cold turkey is the best way. I stopped that way, but did it with a friend who also wanted to stop, so we did it together. We were each others support system. If you have a friend that smokes that also wants to stop you can confer with him and see if he would like to stop together. Just an idea. I-ve been smoke-free for 14 years now after smoking for 24 years. It is so worth it!

Once you-ve actually stopped, brushing your teeth every time you get a craving is good and also drinking loads of water and walking and taking cold showers is also good ways to divert your cravings.
i am very happy to say that i just did. this is what i did. tell your self I DON-T SMOKE. and mean it. evey time you want on say it. go places that you can-t smoke in, like schools malls, so on. when others ask say the same thing I DON-T SOMKE. good luck.
Start smoking cigarettes and try eating your cold turkey instead of smoking it

Do your lungs heal if you quit smoking? -

Do your lungs heal if you quit smoking? -

Well, Ive been smoking for over a 2 years now now, and i quit yesterday, i heard ur lungs dont heal they remain the same, is this true or what? Thanks (BTW im 16)
If you keep smoking, they-ll get worse and worse. The damage will never get completely healed, but it won-t be noticable. In about a year you won-t feel anything, but they might be internally damaged slightly. They will improve though. And major props for quitting.
As soon as you put down that last ciggie you body begins to heal itself. You are still very young, your body is very resilient and will heal completely over time.

It is very important that you quit right now. The longer you leave it the harder it will be to quit. Also the older you are and the longer you smoke the less chance your body will have of healing itself.

Good Luck and Good Quitting
Yes, they heal.

In fact, here in Australia they-ve flipped the advertising from fear-based (-every cigarette is doing you damage-) to the more positive -every day without cigarettes is doing you good-. Your risk factors eventually fall to basically the same levels as everyone else.

My understanding is that you-ll feel worse for a while before you feel better, but you WILL feel better.
Yes - I quit for 8 months after having smoked a pack or more per day for 6 years, and by the end of the 8 months my lung function seemed perfectly normal and I was no longer getting winded etc. I noticed major lung improvement, probably 3 or 4 months into my quitting (unfortunately I started up again...don-t make the mistake of -I can have just one for good times sake.) GOOD LUCK!
Holy smokes you started at 14!!!! All the body organs can slowly regenerate, but you have to stay away from cigarettes and smokers and work out. If you commit to quitting, your lungs won-t have a difference from someone who never smoked, 10 years from now.
yes, they heal. it takes a long time though. two years will not do TOO much damage. my boyfriend had been smoking for 3 years before he quit. he has been smoke-free for 2 years and has had no problems. :) i-m glad you quit! stay strong! chew nicorette or something! good luck
They heal. After a person stops smoking it takes about 12-15 years for the organs and tissue that have been affected by the effects of nicotine to get back to pretty much the condition they were before a person started smoking.
no they heal... the cillia -hair like structures in your lungs- begin to sweep out all the toxins in your lungs, thats why you cough.

But for long time smokers it can be too late. Damage could be done. And it depends how much you smoked.
The permanent damage is done, but your cardiovascular health should improve. By smoking two years at your age the permanent damage should not be that horrible.
well its more like you cant really -reverse- any damage you caused. but 2 years is not that long unlike people who smoke for 20+ so as long as you quit now, i really wouldnt worry about having any illnesses from it
I-m pretty sure your lungs will heal. Just don-t start smoking again. And you are not suppose to smoke at 16 its illegal and very unhealthy. BTW good luck on quiting.
i smoked for 33 years and its been 6 years since i stopped and its gotten better but still not like it was when i was say 17.
yeah, they heal, but they-ll never be as healthy as they were before you smoked.
Go talk to your GP about it.

Congratulations on quitting!
im pretty sure they remain the same, but if you continue to smoke they will only get worse
they do heal up but it takes a little while...just don-t hang around people who smoke
i-m sure if you complete quit forever, you will be fine

What are some good tips for success in quitting smoking? -

Without using the patch, gum, or Chantix.

It-s more of a how to stay focused, and not -give in- (willpower) type of question. I have quit many times inthe past, longest was for 4 years, but I-m smoking more packs of ciggs today than I ever was in the past.

Any tricks and/or advice would be appreciated.
divert your addiction to other things. video games, relationships, paties, food.... anything other than drugs. the replacement might not be healthy either, but it will at less be less detrimental.
Just keep looking ahead, and decide where you want to be in 1, 2, 6 or 12 months down the track and aim to do it without cigarettes.
what worked for me was putting the money i would usually spend on smokes into an account or piggy bank and at the end of the month, if you have not had a smoke, reward yourself with something you really want using the money you would usually have spent on your ciggies, you will start to enjoy your rewards more and realize how much money you are putting into the pockets of the evil corporations that produce cigarettes
I would recommend EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). It-s an emotional, needle-free version of acupuncture and it works wonders!

Quit smoking 4 days ago, coughing normal? -

I cough alot since i quit , but i can breathe alot better and info. on this ?
Yes, you will have some coughing as your esophagus is kind of starting to sort of repair itself since it isn-t getting the smoke and stuff anymore. This should only last for a couple weeks at most. I had the same thing when I quit. Congrats to you, and stick with it!
Yeah, when my girlfriend quit, she coughed a lot for about a week afterwards. I assumed it was her lungs and such trying to get rid of all the crudshe-d accumulated. You-re fine.

And well done!!! Isn-t it nice to breathe free?

I plan to quit smoking as of tommarrow, any advise? -

Any thing would be healpful
Hi, what a coincidence, I too am going to quit tomorrow..Some people don-t understand the tomorrow thing. Your probably doing what I am doing.. Your smoking what you have left today so you can get up, take a shower and smell nice for your new start. When you finish today-s smokes you will empty ashtrays and get rid of the butts so you won-t be tempted to smoke them, cause you know you will if there around.. Its hard, sometimes its nice to have someone to talk to that is going through the same thing. So if you don-t mind I will IM you and maybe we can do this together..All the advise above about drinking water, finding something else to do and keep busy is all sound advise. good luck to you and wish me the same..
only one answer. just stop. good luck!!!

Chew gum and do something different than you used to do at smoke time.
first off good luck! try to keep busy and chew gum alot. try to stay away from other people that smoke so you don-t get cravings
Well I plan to get on a healthy diet tomorrow. You-re not alone. :)
Hi, Quit smoking for good.
dont smoke is a good start good luck though
why not today?

Buy some candy or suckers until the WDs are over. Drink lots of water, take a vitamin and hang tough because soon you will feel and smell better.

Remember that no one likes to kiss an ash tray.
KEEP BUSY!!!
you should have something to help you thru the cravings chew lots of gum chew straws or plastic anything for that matter when i quit i would eat about a pound of mini carrots a day and it helped and its healthy dont give up
Yeah, start now.

Besides that- buy straws to chew and mimic the action of smoking to distract yourself from the habitual addiction.
Also- sugar free hard candy for when straws aren-t possible. As far as the physical addiction- all I can say is be strong. Just don-t do it- you have the choice. You need to change your mindset- believe that you are a nonsmoker. If you focus on the struggle of quitting then you are focused on smoking and you will fail. Keep busy and don-t focus on quitting, just quit. Stay away from other smokers until you are over the killer cravings. Plan on being a douche bag for a week or so, and make sure there is nothing stressful in your schedule at the beginning. And lastly, quit now- it is very empowering to say -I-m done smoking- and throw out the rest- it makes it more real. Waiting until tomorrow is only enabling yourself and maybe tomorrow you say tomorrow again. Now is the time, while you feel the urge.
stock up on candy and gum
Don-t light up. Get a job in a gun-powder factory.
Good for you! I made the same decision a number of years ago, and I remember what it was like to go from two packs a day to zero cigarettes a day. A couple of things helped -- jelly beans were good. They stayed in your mouth for a long time. Gum was tiring and didn-t help very much at all, but taking up crocheting and knitting was wonderful. You can-t smoke while you-re working with your hands, so anything you can find of that sort will help you over the hump. Add in some exercise (bet you haven-t been doing much jogging, walking or running) drink lots of water and try to break up any associations. I used to smoke when I read the paper, smoke when I climbed into the car to go anywhere, so I made a deliberate attempt to re-route these routines and replace them with other actions.
Good luck to you!
good luck
You are much more likely to be able to quit smoking with medication, see your doctor.
if you plan to quit smoking tomorrow....its never going to happen...
quit smoking NOW !!!!
-that will work!!!
Do it cold turkey. Keep your hands busy, chew gum, and keep your mind focused on other things. Eat fruit and drink plenty of water. It will be hard for a few days but you can do it! You are making the right choice!

Quit smoking cold turkey and dont think i can do it please help? -

so i have decided to quit smoking and im having a hard time with the cravings and dont know what to do and i have surpport from one person my bff every one else keeps being negitive saying ill never make it how can i do this and get through the bitchness of it please help
I stopped smoking 3 years ago. It was a matter of self control to me. I would literally tell myself NO! You have to get through just Today!!
I would keep myself busy. The hardest part is when I was upset over something or when I was driving.
I almost gave in when I was really upset but I would still have to literally talk myself through it. Asking myself how would I feel about myself tomorrow after messing up over such a temparary thing.
Everyday that I went without a smoke was one more day that I could rub in my husbands face :) (He was still smoking!). I would be like -I haven-t had a smoke in 5 days!-
After a while They even started to stink to me. I Could not stand to be around them!
My husband was so impressed with my ability to quit (and a little of my nagging) That he quit a couple months after I did!
NoW I Never even think about it unless I am around it. Usually When I smell it I think Gosh they are killing me with second hand smoke! But sometimes I would love to take it from them and run and smoke it up!! SELF CONTROL!!
My grandFather Died of Lung Cancer he smoked his whole life. Its a BAD way to Die.
After I quit within a couple weeks My sinuses where trying to get better because they were use to all of the smoke. I could hardly Talk. It is amazing what I had been doing to myself!
Anyway after that I never had anymore problems.
And actually now I rarely ever get sick!

I can-t help with the B*tchiness. I have always had that.........Still don-t know how to get rid of it!! :)

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!
YOU CAN DO IT YOU JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!! Show those Negative People Who you are and How Strong You Can Be!!
you can do it! try going to the doctors and they-ll give you either nicotine chewing gum, losenges or nasal spray trust me you will get through this i had been smoking for 5 years and i mangaed to give up if i can do it so can you good luck!

As I sit here, with my laptop, and my oxygen tube in my nose, I feel the need to answer you. I smoked for many, many years, without ever stopping and now I am being treated for COPD, which is another way to say emphysema and bronchitis. I do okay, with my three different breathing medicines, as long as I don-t catch cold, but when I do, it is bad! Others have to have oxygen all of the time, but I am not at that point, but I do have to use it all night and part of the day. I wish I had never smoked, but an emergency ambulance trip to the hospital, two years ago, scared me into finally quitting. I still crave it, but NEVER AGAIN! I wish you luck....it is very, very hard, but try to imagine being limited in your activity, when you are older. It sucks!
well you and i have one thin gin common. we are both tryin g to quit smoking . I found that the best thing that works for me is i keep a one gallon Ice tea jug full of vegetables. the next thing i do wheni get cravings is go for a walk or find an activity that i enjoy. keep listening to your bf and also lasrt drink plenty of water each day because that flushes your system out. each day will get easier and easier as the weeks go by. so keep your chin up i hagin in there with you as well

im trying to stop its been almost 2 days since my last cigarette and i feel depressed
how long have you been smoke free and
how long did the cravings last
Well done! Try Alan Carrs Easy Way To Stop Smoking book and CD. You have got to try it too - let me know! Amazing. My friend smoked 50 a day and worked in the restaurant trade in the time when people used to be able to smoke in public places. He and I both quit by reading that book and it never occurs to us to smoke even 10 years later.
Most people say that however long you-ve been smoking and however manage to quit, after 2 weeks its much easier and within a month you definately lose the urge to smoke. Give it several months and you-ll hate smokers lol!
Please try that book - it-s great. He even tells you to smoke while reading it!
congrats on those first 2 days...as far as cravings last.. i cant tell you becuase thats an individual thing.. i will state that they do go away.. i have been quit for a littl over 5 years using the nicotine anonymous program..

we have meetings in most large citys, and on the internet
i stopped smoking because i got pregnant and i was going to start back up after the baby, but with the taxes and everything i highly doubt that. it has been really hard on me especially since it seems like everyone around me smokes. i-ve been smoke free for 3-4 months now. the cravings last awhile i won-t lie...i still get cravings, but i think about it hurting my baby and i won-t take that chance.
A little off topic but,..I wonder how many people would quit if they were given free x-rays of their lungs.
I had a cat scan that caught a small spot of emphysema even though I was never much of a smoker.. and you can be sure that I never will be again.
I guess you know that they sell gum to help the transition.
Good luck.
been quit for 2 1/2 years . used chantex. used suckers to fill in for the need to have something in my mouth and hands. the cravings were gone in about a week.
As the old saying goes, it-s easy: I-ve done it a dozen times. Good luck!

Is there anyone out there who have tried their damnedest to quit smoking, but failed? -

No, I managed it. I cut out the first - last one every day, then -not before midday- etc, kept cutting down, and have been clean for 14 years now.

Try hypnotherapy - Paul McKenna-s CD. I listened to his Fear of Flying CD twice and it worked for me. His recent Sky TV series on losing weight used similar techniques and was also excellent. I think he-s brilliant.

I-ve just looked on Amazon - they-ve sold out! Here-s one on ebay:
I tried a few times failed with patches then tried Zyban smoked right through the course
Then i tried different patches they worked gave it up no problem I have been a non smoker now one whole year yesterday I-m really proud of myself
YES!!!!

It happen to me many times. Probably about seven, and fail.

But, there is hope at the end of the tunnel. I quit smoking four years ago, it was as hard as ever, but finally my attempt was successful. It has make a world of difference in my life, feel much better and healthier.

What was the difference between failure and success? I do not really know, they where all as hard. Probably in the last one I was more convinced, in the sense that I could not afford to fail again.
Yes, lousy 2 weeks for me and everyone around me. A bad month afterwards, but then it becomes easier and easier.
At first I even wanted to vomit and was dizzy because of the lack of nicotine, etc.

Another difference: The last time I quited cold turkey. Just did it overnight, and tried not to think / feel that I was doing something hard or depraving myself of something. Just ignored those feelings or thoughts or down played them.

My advice: Do not be to hard on yourself, it is not a moral issue!
Just try again. You will succeed.
Have tried patches, gum, hypnotherapy, acupuncture - all failed.

I did go onto ZYBAN and it was immediate, no withdrawals no problems at all, and then after 6 months I woke up and it was as if I had only stopped the day before! Tried to get a second course but only allowed one treatment.

2 days later, back on the ciggies and still am!
i tried twice
Gave up twice, each time for about 3 months. Now I just enjoy it. This isn-t supposed to be a flippant answer but it-s true.
get zyban tablets.. I took them, not even for the prescribed time and 2 years on, I-m still not smoking, the thought of it makes me feel sick and when people smoke around me its horrible lol I wont be smoking again and I recomend zyban to everyone trying to give up

go to your gp to be referred to a smoking sessation clinic
Yep, must have tried bout 10 times, longest i lasted 3yrs wit nicotinell patches

Great ways to quit smoking? -

I want to stop smoking!!! But the more I want to stop the more I smoke! Its like a vicious circle! I don-t smoke loads a day, usually 10. But I-ve tried to quit and the last time I couldn-t sleep properly and I felt really anxious all the time! This lasted two weeks then I started smoking again cos I was fed up of feelng terrible!
So how did YOU quit or someone you know?
Any uncommon methods?
Thanks in advance.
I stopped smoking 5 weeks ago.
I-m using the nicotine patch, which your suppose to keep on for 24hrs.
I take it off 2 hrs before bed because it does effect sleep.

The first 2 weeks are the hardest then it becomes alot easier. I stopped drinking alcohol 5 weeks ago too. Its really hard to give up ciggarettes if your like drinking. I also keep active and have a clean healthy diet.

I feel so much better then i did 5 weeks ago.

Good luck, theres a book i read too which i thought was pretty useful.

-How to quit without feeling s**t-
Its a good decision that you have taken to quit smoking. The real point is that people smoke for many reasons and many times the reason is that they want to do something and they lit a cigarette. To help that you can try for some substitute when ever you feel like smoking. My friend has the same problem and he took the help of nicotine gum, whenever he felt like smoking he used one. The best point is that he received a free sample of 100 gum to try for free, they helped him and he then continued with them till he quit. I am sure it can help you too, you can also ask for free sample, he got it from the resource included below.. All the Best!!!
You can try
Stop by a senior citizens home or better yet, stop by the cardiac unit or cancer ward in a hospital every day for at least a week.
Find somebody to visit who is sick from smoking. Then force yourself to go outside and smoke and re enter to talk to them. You will feel so gross and smelly and realize that you are not doing the right thing to your body or to the air polluting yourself with smokes.

When you smoke visualize that it is liquid poop you are inhaling. Yep, lift up the back of your throat, down it goes, filling up the lungs, the heart, sticking in the crevisis and hardening.
That-s what smoke is.
Hey Leanne,

I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article:
http://www.squidoo.com/Not_Smoking_Any_M…

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!
J.
Smoking 10 cigarettes means you are a chain smoker. Its very difficult for the chain smokers to quit smoking easily. Its not that easy for you. All you can do is smoke just 1 or 2 cigerattes in day. Which is also dangerous for your health. Put up those patch, it will help.
All the best !!!!!!!!!!!!
my aunt stopped smoking about 2 years ago, she used a treatment called Champix, it worked wonders because shes not smoking anymore. My mom started the treatment too a week ago and she is starting to dislike the taste of the cigarette, so it works!
I heard that hypnosis tapes help really well. I have never tried it myself but I heard it has worked!
Im not a smoker but I hear doctors can help and why did you smoke in the first place? I know its the friends

What is the best product to help you quit smoking? -

me and my husband want to quit smoking. What is the best product to use b/c we have smoked for several years?
WOW - Here-s my chance to REALLY share some personal experience information at Yahoo Answers . . . THANX for the memory. . .

CREDENTIALS = 40 year smoker; 3 time -quitter-; clean now for 19 months

Successful quitting requires - first and foremost -
An ABSOLUTE DESIRE to BE a non-smoker, FOREVER MORE. . . without THAT, you are wasting your time and energy in attempting to be tobacco/nicotine free.

My first attempt - (10 yr smoker) - shear will power due to pregnancy - succeeded for 7 months - resumed cigarettes at onset of labor

My second attempt - (28 yr smoker) - pneumonia leading to use of nicorette - succeeded for 4 months - rapid weight gain prompted return to smoking

My 3rd attempt - (40 yr smoker) - cost became prohibitive and a new life parter does not smoke - I began unlimited nicorette use for 7 months - then came acceptance of self with rapid weight gain over the past year, after total detox from nicotine

That-s a very brief synopsis of my -quitting- experience --- leading full circle (back) to my opening statement . . .

The BEST PRODUCT to help you quit smoking IS -

DESIRE TO SUCCEED regardless of the -AFTER- EFFECTS
Nicorette, or those patchec
I like the lozenges best. The patch didn-t sem to control those extra tough cravings throughout the day.
Lock him in his room for 2 weeks.
try to smoke clove cigarettee..
the smell can make u quit ur habit
I don-t know of a best product. But, the best reasons to quit are You, your health, your kids, and others around you. I quit cold turkey and it worked for me. It obviously does not work for everyone. It definitely was not easy. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. but, worth it.
Will Power ... not available in stores at any price.
Self Dicipline...

Another one is the one that comes from your wife(if you-re married)

I have one... .

They-re called children.
Will power, a pack of nicotine chewing gum and visiting a lung caner patience bedside.
You can do millions have, good luck I know you can! Also you will look much younger smoking wrinkles the skin so think what it does to your insides.
Different products work for different people. You can try the pill. Lots of my pals liked that. The patch works, too. It will still be hard, but with some determination, you can do it. C-mon, join me! Join the non-smoking, quitters, dark side!
cold turkey
I don-t know. What made me stop smoking was something someone said to me. It was so true, it made me stop.
-Smoking is really just a slow form of suicide-

It was not easy, but whenever I wanted a cigerette I would remember this saying and simply put a pencil or something in my mouth (to hold like a cigerette). Many chewed ends of pencils and pens, but you know... I-m alive and feeling way better after 15 years. You too can do it.
My aunt quit...she used the patch and the gum and chewed that gum for YEARS after she quit, but she never smoked another cigarette!!! Good luck.
My neighbor quit by changing to black and mild and that helped. I know a lady who claimed that hipnosis helped her. I don-t know of anyone that used a stop smoking product that helped them.
i would go with m-ms there simply delicous
bubble gum

Helping My Parent Quit Smoking HELP PLEASE? -

My mom has been smoking for quite a while now and I wanted to know ways I could encourage my mom to stop smoking... I really cant go up to her and ask her to stop smoking... its kinda hard for me so what are some ways I can do it without getting her mad
Tough one. You can-t make anyone else do anything - they-ll only quit when they are ready. As kids, we tried for years to get my parents to quit smoking and nothing worked. I hope at least that yours don-t smoke in the house or the car with you. Now, as an adult I have chronic bronchitis and asthma due to their second-hand smoke.

Print out photos of diseased lungs and hang them all over the house. If you can-t talk to them, leave brochures around on the dangers of second-hand smoke.

Leave the room every time they are about to light up. Try saying, -I-m sorry, but I love you and I won-t watch you kill yourself.-

These are some very good websites. Good luck!
I love this question, and I-ll tell you why.

There are several new medicines available through your doctor (prescription only) that have been made to help people quit smoking.

They actually remove the nicotine withdrawal effects, so quitting smoking becomes drastically easier, as once you take the medicine, the desire to have that next cigarette just goes away.

Do some research on this subject, talk to a doctor at a walk-in-clinic, or talk to your family doctor. If you-re young, ask your neighbour or use the yellow pages to find where a walk in clinic near you is.
I think the best way to assist someone in -quitting- is to NOT nag them. By telling your mother she needs to quit, she will get more stressed out and smoke more, or even -secretly smoke,- which isn-t going to help her. One of the best ways to quit smoking is to be preoccupied with something else. Is there something you and your mom can do together that will make it impossible for her to smoke, and maybe even forget about smoking for a period of time? This will help with cutting down on the physical dependence. Try maybe exerise together, or joining a book club that doesn-t allow smoking, etc. It is hard, but if she can put her mind off of smoking for short bits at a time, it will become easier for her to cut down and quit in the end.

Good luck!
Tell her you-re concerned for her, and ask her if she-s considered quitting smoking for good. If she says yes, ask her what you can do to help her. Ultimately, she has to want to quit for herself, or she won-t be successful.

My friend-s mom had a heart attack (directly related to smoking) and when she got home from the hospital her house had been cleaned top to bottom, walls scrubbed, ashtrays tossed, curtains and windows washed, carpets vacuumed and shampooed...everything you can think of to remove the smell, discoloration, and remiders of cigarettes. Maybe you and your mom could do this together and she can see a doctor to help her control her cravings for cigarettes and break her habit for good.
Really? You can-t ask her? Not that it would really get her to stop smoking, immediately, but most people would see that as a sign of real affection ... like you-re worried about her health.

I can-t think of any real subtle ways to do this. I guess the best thing I could think of is to ask someone from a non-profit health organization to drop a visit to her ... to hand in some pamphlets. She might suspect it was you who prompted them, but as long as you don-t give it away, she won-t really know. (Obviously, if you get non-smoking literature yourself, she-ll suspect you-re the one who planted it there.)

Very good luck!
Tell your mom how much you love her and want her to be around for a long time to come. Remind her of the dangers of cigarettes as I am sure you are well aware. Ask her if she would please try to stop smoking as it is not good for her health nor anyone else in the family to breathe second hand smoke. Tell her smoking makes everyone`s hair and clothes smell funny as well as your home. Keep trying and maybe mom will finally get the message.
My son asked me if I would stop smoking around him. I thought I could do that. Then he started giving me -the look- if he thought I was going out for a smoke. He told me that he didn-t like how tobacco smelled and that he smelled smoke and he wished that I would stop.

It didn-t happen over night, I cut back until I just had one a day, but he continued to tell me he loved me and didn-t want me to get cancer or lung disease. Honestly, one a day, was the hardest to let go, but I did it. Three years this July. That-s after 30 years of smoking. I replaced some of the cravings with water, some with chocolate. Some with fresh air. Some with a good book.

Good luck. Nicotine and all the other chemicals are very addictive mentally and physically.
Go up and talk to her. That-s the only way. Tell her EXACTLY how you feel and why you want her to quit/afraid of what will happen to her. Honesty is what will make her quit.

Don-t be scared about her getting angry.
Her getting angry is just being ignorant about your thoughts and having never heard them before.
My nefuw told his mom she must not love him enuff to quit to see him grow up and have children she quit a month after
She has to want to quit. Don-t nag her, that only makes it worse.
give them advice and some required love x3

Why is it hard to quit smoking? :what do you think it depends most on psychological or physical? why? -

Why is it hard to quit smoking? :what do you think it depends most on psychological or physical? why? -

Primarily physical, if you are talking about cigarette smoking.

Cigarette companies use ammonia in their process, so that cigarettes essentially -free base- the nicotine into your system. This is why cigarettes are so much more addicting than cigars or chewing tobacco. Even though tobacco has the potential to be habit-forming, cigarettes have been specially designed to be addictive, with over 50 years of research into how to hook smokers effectively.
2 reasons, smoking is a habit. after a meal, talking on the phone, after sex.. etc.. this is the hardest part of quitting to overcome. Second is the craving for nicotine. It is the hardest addiction to conquer.

Why when every I quit smoking do I get a chest cold? -

You would think it would make me get less of a cold. But when ever I quit or slow down on the amount I smoke I always get a cold.
This may sound strange, but you might be going through a -healing crisis-, which is actually a good thing. It could be your bodies way of trying to clean itself out and flush out the toxins from the cigarettes. It would sound accurate since smoking effects your lungs and lympathic system (amongst other things), and you get a cold whenever you quit. You might try to google -healing crisis-.

I know when I change my diet from eating unhealthy junk to eating healthy (raw veggies), I sometimes experience flu-like symptoms, most likely my body getting rid of the toxic byproducts from the unhealthy food I-d been eating. It generally goes away after a few days, and I end up feeling even better than before.
it just feels like a cold. your body is getting rid of toxins. so you will couph a lot and, hack up a lot of mucus for a couple of weeks.

I want Quit smoking Plz helppppppppppppp? -

I want quit my smoking habit, plz give the possible ways to quit my smoking habit,If once i quit my smoking is there is any changes i will get ?plz give a serious answer?
When I was a smoker 5 years ago, it was incredibly difficult for me to quit. I tried going -cold turkey-, brushing my teeth when ever I craved a cigarette, only smoking -lites- etc. Nothing worked. Then my health started getting really bad. I got chronic bronchitis and had to use an inhaler!!! I was only 17 at the time and realized that smoking was not only stupid but horrid for my health. Around that time Zyban a prescription med. came out. I asked my doctor about it and he thought it was a great idea. The directions say to take Zyban for a full 2 weeks and smoke normally, this is to ensure there is enough Zyban in your system so when you stop smoking your body doesn- t go in fits. On day 1 I took Zyban, was my last day I ever smoked!! I took Zyban for a total of 3 weeks and have never gone back to smoking. I highly recommend it if you-re serious about quitting. Good Luck!
1. Seek help from the clinic
2. Get rid of all ash trays in the house
3. Feeling the urge = chew gum or munch carrot or cucumber sticks.
4. Dun hangout with friends who smoke for the time being until you are strong enough to withstand temptation.
Hey there! It is quite simple if you are really serious about it.... After the first three days it gets easy.. associate smoking a cigarette with something digusting (for me it was worms). Break the cycle of smoking by changing your habits.. for example instead of having that first cigarette in the morning.. have a glass of juice or water. Have something like carrot sticks to chew..
November 16th was the Great American Smokeout, an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Help is available all year long at their website. Also visit their Guide for Quitting Smoking site where you can find all sorts of information including local support groups.
I wish you every success!
I was a smoker until my 5-year old son asked me when can he start. That was a turning point for me. Right then and there I threw away my Kents (remember them?) and have never touched a cig again. That was 28 years ago! Sure I still crave a cigarette after dinner, or while out with friends but I-m determined never to go back. The secret to quit smoking?
D-E-T-E-R-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N. What-s it worth to you? How badly do you want to stop, and do you really want to stop? The power of the mind is stronger than any craving a person can have. Think about it and decide.
I have smoked off and on for 65 years and believe me I-m still just one cigarette away from going after them again full time. A week ago just got stubborn and stopped for good I hope. If you are off cigarettes 24 hours you have broken the habit then it-s just stay stubborn. By the way tobacco is more addicting than heroin.
I-m a 23 yr old male, and I use to smoke. I started out smoking when i was around 14-15 and I just recently quit In February of 2006. What you have to do is be ready cause your not ready to do it and try and fail your gonna automatically think your not going to be able to quit. So 99.9% of quitting is mental! You have to be prepared and tell yourself with your last cigarrette in your hand that this is your last one.. It really worked for me..I also noticed that I didn-t gain weight..I watched what I ate. I weight a little less then when i was smoking. Also to divert from your daily routines. I would drink tea in the morning before work rather than smoke a cig breaks I would do crossword puzzles. After any meal I would do a crossword or brush my teeth or chew gum...What the hardest thing to do is to turn down a cig when your out at a bar/club, cause someone at my age likes to go out and feel good and end up having and urge..You CAN-T fall in the hole....I-VE HAD SO MANY URGES. Then I start to gag when I smell it! I hope my response is worth your time and can help! GOOD LUCK!
what i did to quit was cold turkey, try to hang around people that dont smoke is no 1 for a while .... try 3 days alone in your apartment ,throw all your cigs away, and put all your ashtrays away, and just try to play games on the computer, sleep and watch tv dont drink coffee or drink alcohol do some reading .... hope that helps it worked for me
I bought this little booklet called -Quitting Smoking for Dummies.-
At the same time I started jogging every morning, taking supplements and eating healthy food. Now it-s been 3 months and I-ll never go back.

How do I quit smoking? -

cold turkey does not work for me i tried it many times...i want to quit but then i change my mind after a couple months
I smoked a pack a day for ten years, tried unsuccessfully to quit well over 100 times, and finally gave it up for good in 1997.

Things that didn-t work for me included nicotine replacement (gum and transdermals), gradually cutting back on the amount I smoked, and attempting to quit cold turkey without altering my mood with antidepressants. Sometime in 1996 or 1997, though, the New York Times ran an article in which they stated that nicotine has an antidepressant effect. As far as I know, this was before Wellbutrin and other antidepressants were being marketed to help people quit smoking. Something clicked when I read this article and, though I had never considered nicotine an antidepressant before, I realized that my lack of success in quitting smoking could largely be attributed to the intense depression/anhedonia (lack of ability to find pleasure in anything) that I experienced whenever I quit. Basically, I had been medicating myself for depression and had become addicted to the medicine. This was essentially the reason why I would start out really wanting to quit but would lose interest in staying quit after a few days or weeks - it-s hard to want to quit when you feel too miserable to want anything other than to feel better. With this in mind, I went to the doc and asked for a prescription to Prozac. I responded very well to Prozac, and a week later, I quit smoking for good. While it wasn-t exactly an easy process and still required a substantial exercise of will, it was much easier than when I had tried in the past, namely because I was able to find other things (activities, hobbies, etc.) that gave me pleasure during the process of physical and psychological withdrawal. Two years after beginning the Prozac, I quit that, too, without any great difficulty. If you-re serious about quitting smoking, I-d recommend trying this approach, but please do your research about Prozac and other SSRIs (the class of drugs Prozac is a part of) before you begin. Some people do experience serious side effects, and though they-re not likely to be as bad as those that can ultimately result from twenty or thirty years of smoking, you should know about them before you begin a course of medication.

I think a certain amount of -self-hypnosis- also helped me. By self-hypnosis, I mean spending a few minutes a day before and during the process of withdrawal focusing or meditating on everything I found displeasing about smoking - the bronchitis, diminished lung capacity, accelerated heart rate, damage to my sense of smell, yellow fingers, smoky smelling apartment and car, the feeling of being a slave to the tobacco industry, etc. By doing this enough, I was eventually able to alter my immediate response to the thought of tobacco from craving and desire to repulsion and disgust.
niccocure, 98% success rate.
You must have determination. When you feel like smoking, take something nice to eat, like a roast chicken or a potato chip.

Also, frequently drink more water.
you have to have great control for cold turkey; you can do it if you really set your mind to it and fight the urge. stay away from other smokers if you can. If you really can-t, get patches, gum whatever it takes. you already took a hugh step by wanting to quit
Cold turkey IS the best way... i-ve been quit for 6 months, i tried to use commit, it worked but i wanted to get myself off the nicotine. if you change your mind, you arent ready. you have to commit with ALL of you if you want to be successful.
I-m not ready to quit smoking yet, but I have plans for when I do. There-s the patch, the gum, the pill, or hypnotism. Hypnotism costs some money, but it worked for my dad. he quit for 5 years! I think when I quit I-m going to eating tons and tons of sunflower seeds to keep my mouth busy, just like the warden on the movie HOLES. Good luck, I hope you succeed! Best wishes! :)
oh god, you made it a couple months and you stopped!! i-ve done that a few times.
im a pack a day smoker and the only way i make it farther than a couple months is with nicoderm transdermal nicotine patches.

takes that craving right away until i want a beer. they go together you know.
Personal challenges such as this are of great difficulty, and may prove to be more revealing then you are comfortable with. How you respond to such a challenge will determine how you respond to other greater challenges down the road. The fact that you were able to stop for a couple of months showed greater courage and determination. To keep on, would be a victory that you could hold out to others as an example of your personal strength.

You have to make cold turkey work. Here-s how--set a date. That day comes, throw all your smokes out and your lighters and ashtrays too, its all gone. If you can, schedule your quitting for when you are going to be starting a vacation, or otherwise away from familiar surroundings. Then just don-t get any more. You will think about smoking. EVERY time you do, give yourself some MILD negative reinforcement, like a fairly strong pinch on your forearm, or drop for 20 pushups, or walk around the block. You will train your mind to not even think about smoking. Take up a few healthy activities so you can make health a focus of your mind--a little light exercising, whatever. And above all, love yourself.
dont try all these niquitine and stuff im trying to quit as well awwww shall we quit together
I made it 2 weeks without smoking. But then stress overtook me and here i sit today, still smoking.
How well I hear you *S*. I went for 42 years thinking nothing would work and being too afraid of failing to give it a real shot. You mention you keep changing your mind. This might be the key to what you need to work on to help you through this very, very hard job of quiting. Have you talked to your Dr. about nicotine replacement?

What worked for me was to go on line, read every darn thing I could, steal their idea-s for substitutions, walking three miles a day, a combination of suggestions. I went cold turkey physically but not mentally - I read, went to sites, and chats. Good luck and grab all the help you can get. Janie
If you keep changing your mind, then you-re not ready to quit. You can only really quit when you WANT to quit, and when you want it for yourself.

And when that happens, then cold turkey might just work.

Because you really can do anything you want, but the wanting is the hard part. You-d think it would be easy, just wanting something, but we so often lie to ourselves, and that-s the real problem.

So the problem here is that you don-t really want to quit. You-re doing it for some other reason, and that other reason just isn-t a good enough reason for you to make the quitting stick.
Well have someone that smokes and wants to quit too so then you both would encourage each other or talk to someone that has quit smoking.
I read this somewhere...there are three things that help you stop smoking.
Before you smoke, or want to smoke,
1. Drink a cup of water. This destroys the need for taste of cigarettes.
2. A bowl of fruit. I forgot how this helps but it does!
3. I forget. IM SO SORRY!
i would recommend: DRINK A CUP OF WATER WHENEVER YOU FEEL LIKE SMOKING. and.
have someone to nag you always. i nagged my uncle and he stopped.
umm you should ues the stop smoking pads.
You dig deep inside and really make a promise to yourself. If you can not keep a promise to yourself, how can you make a promise to your friends and family? If you can not do cold turkey, that is OK, start slow, baby step at a time. Say one pack per week, or whatever you make a decision and stick to it. Gradually over time, decrease and decrease. When temptation comes back, and it will, just tell yourself -Do I honor my promise to myself or cheat?- I think you deserve to honor your promise.
hypnosis is suppose to make you feel like smoking is a gross thing .......try it
EASY STEP FOR U

Drink milk everyday
the doctors say that if u drink milk , then u dont like taste of cigarette

I know my family would be very upset to know i smoke, my dad has been lecturing me my entire life not to, while he smokes two packs a day, i have been smoking for four years now, i need advice on how to drive with him for nine hours and be with him all weekend with out smoking and with out being a complete *****, please help! no bull **** answers necessary
thats tough!!! i smoke too. i know i shouldn-t...but i do! heres what i would do...i agree with the gum situation. stock up! make sure you have snacks to snack on while in the car. especially finger foods to keep your hands busy. pretzels work especially well. also, while you are not eating...try bringing books, magazines, crosswords, etc. to get your mind off of it. as for when you are there, try to keep as busy as possible! (i think the car will be the most challenging.) hope i helped!

- kels
If you-re ready to quit smoking, try going to the doctor, or take some kind of medication.
Bring lots of gum with you, and always have it in your mouth!
Its going to be hard, but buy you some nicotine patches and chew plenty of gum...just go for a walk or practice some deep breathing exercises when your nerves feel like they are getting the best of you! Good luck!
Use the patch, lozenges, or gum. It works. You-ll still want one, but you-ll only be dealing with the craving psychologically, not physically.
Be an adult and fess up. I seriously doubt that you-ll be able to make it all that time without smoking and without having withdrawls. If you-re old enough to buy the cigarettes (I-m assuming you are) then why are you hiding it? They may be upset, and for good reason, but they-ll get over it. And maybe the 2 of you can work on quitting together.

Congrats! When I quit I ate red hots. Anything with Cinnamon seemed to help. Also, keep busy. Join a support group, there are many online. It-s very hard, but it gets easier. For every week I didn-t smoke I -rewarded- myself with something. For me it-s books. Good luck!
None. Only strong will-power. Remember the day you quit smoking and count the days you are without smoke. Use this as your inspiration to remain a non-smoker. If once you take to some alternative, you-ll again succumb to a new weakness. Use your will-power. You can!!
Hard Candy whenever you start craving. Keep some in the car!!!

Congratulations!
There is this new gum out that helps you quit and you could chew it instead of smoke!
The patches help. But if you don-t want to used free based nicotine to quit smoking, try salted sunflower seeds - sex.Yup! the seeds give you the hand to mouth habit, - the sex tickles the same part of the brain,so you-re not jonesing for a smoke
Different strokes for different folks but a few of my relatives and friends did the following:

1) Chewed gum whenever the urge to smoke struck
2) sucked on a straw - cutting the straw cigarette length
3)used the patch
4)chewed nicorette (ick)
5) Hypnosis - works on a few
6) there is now some kind of shot you can get that helps take away the urge.
Chewing gum, and a hobby to keep your hands busy.

Congratulations!

Every time your not smoking a cigarette you-ve quit smoking. the actual withdrawal form cigarettes is not that bad, you go for 8 hours without any cigarettes when you sleep. nicotine has a short half life in the body just stop cold turkey. weaning yourself off is bad because it makes the cravings worse , it makes each cigarette seem 10X better than it really is.
Smoking is a horrible habit. I quit a 2 pack a day habit using an electronic cigarette. They are amazing. The last time I had a traditional cigarette was an hour before I got my e-cig in the mail. I have not had the desire to smoke a traditional cigarette ever since. They don-t stink at all and you can smoke them indoors at bars and restaurants. I feel a million times better now. Here is a link to the company I buy from. They have one of the best reputations in the e-cig world and great prices. Good luck on your journey to a healthier you.
