How did you quit smoking? -

What is the most effective method for smoking cessation? I am a slave to Mr. C, and I do not want to trade one bad habit for another. I have tried the patch, gum, and an anti-depressant. I always let Mr. C. convince me that I need him, and I let him back in my life. What worked for you?

This is my 5th attempt to stop. I started 22 years ago. I am heavy smoker, but I smoke very light cigarettes (friends call it grass clippings). Also, I tend to let a great number of them burn up. I think I can get past the nicotine dependence. The psychological dependence gets me every time. Please help! I want to be a former smoker.

Mr. C. was my best friend too until I realized I was my best friend... Good luck!!!
I don-t smoke, but my friend and his wife did, and they tried to stop year after year and couldn-t. This is how they finally did it:

They switched to something called -American Cigarettes.- He said they were more expensive than regular cigarettes, unfiltered, and tasted awful! BUT - all they had in them was tobacco. The name brand cigarettes have chemicals in them that KEEP YOU ADDICTED to them.

Once they smoked the plain, nasty ones for about 6 months, then they slowly started tapering off, and they were able to quit! It-s been almost 2 years, and I am so proud of them.

Good luck to you - I know you can do it, too!
What really helped me was to keep a big pack of sugarless bubble gum around. Then when I needed a butt I-d have a piece of gum. Try it! And good luck!
I quit on December 20th,2005 (if it was easy, i wouldn-t remember the exact date...lol). I taper my cigs to 2 a day and quit after a week of that. What helped me is changing my habits, the time I wake up, what I do first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and yes I did refrain from hanging out with my smoking friends for a couple of months.
It was a long gradual thing for me. At first I cut out smoking inside my home, made myself go outside. Then cut out smoking in the car. I live in California so smoking in bars went out years ago and the thought of leaving my friends to go out for a smoke became silly.

Eventually I was down to 1 or 2 a day. I never smoked when I was sick with the flu or a cold so one time when I had a cold and had gone a week without smoking I thought, screw it, let-s see how long I can do this. It-s been a year, just over actually. October 1 was my year of being smoke free.

I had tried in the past and tried lots of different things. I think at some point you-re just ready and you-re better equipped to deal with the withdrawl. I stopped craving them after about 10 days.
I can-t tell you how many times I tried to quit, and then I did. I had my last cigarette at 8:38am July 2, 2002. At 9:10am, July 2nd 02 I had a major heart attack at the age of 49. I was driving on the highway at 70 miles an hour when my right coronary artery blocked 100%. I can still tell you to this day what went through my mind as I: A) struggled not to pass out, B) get the car down an exit ramp C) breath through the unbelievable pain...my thoughts were of my disabled husband and what would he do without me...of my mother who at the time was 83 and had already buried her son, husband, parents, and all of her brothers and sisters...I was/am all she has left. What about my 2 girls, had I told them everything they needed to know to be good women?
Those things kept me conscience and kept me alive. I fought like hell to live, and cigarettes tried like hell to kill me. And to think, they wanted to kill me and I-d loved them for over 20 years!! I took them everywhere with me, spent hard earned money on them, gave them fancy cases, and drew them into my body...what more did they want?? Turns out the answer is, they want your life.
How is this going to help you? I-m not sure. I-m just a woman who used to love to smoke. I LOVED it. Then I found out I love the people in my life more...I love life more. Don-t give you-re life to cigarettes. I-m sure your family would rather have you with them...I-m sure there are things you want to do yet in life. The Doc-s told me smokers who don-t get cancer get it in the head (strokes) or the heart. And don-t kid yourself, light cigs will kill you just at fast as my Kool 100-s in a box.

I have a stint in my heart now. I came out of the hospital 3 days after with no desire to smoke. But, I hedged my bets...I gave up caffeine, I walked after eating (instead of smoking), and I looked at the photo the hospital gave me of my heart during the attack, the artery closed off. It scared me off them. Oh, and my husband still smokes...doesn-t make me want one. I-m done with them.
So, I guess I told you this thinking it might help in some small way, I sure hope so. And I wish you all the best. Prayer never hurts either. Good luck!!
my dad smoked and he stopped by just not smoking. I dont how he could STOP but he did it. You have to be totally determined and feel that you really deserve to be smoke-free. To stop myself from over-eatting though, I put an ice cube in my mouth and just let it melt. I have a deep love for ice cubes now, though.
start drinking, i reccomend the expensive stuff, if not switch to boonesfarm wines
Im a smoker trying to quit, my husband is trying too. Its been 4 days now and its getting easier. We go outside when we have a weak moment and smoke a real strong cig. It makes us sick and dizzy. We have gone from 2 packs a day, to 6 cigs a day.

This is how we-re doing it, and I believe itll work. We are, if anything, cutting down our nicotine level, so eventually we wont want anymore. We are determined to kick the habit.

Everyone is different and does it a different way. Just dont give up on wanting to quit. Trying to quit and wanting to quit is a step forward. Dont beat yourself up if you fail the first time. Some ppl do it easier than others. Some ppl need more time.

My hubby and I have smoked for a very long time, 32 yrs for him, and 21 yrs for me. We-re doing much better, but havent kicked it yet. BUT WE WILL.

Keep trying gf, you can do it. I-ll say a prayer for you right now, and I wish you all the luck in the world.
every single time i would think about getting a cigarette
i would just go chew some mint flavored gum and i wouldn-t buy them and i just kept going Thur that method and i Finlay managed to quit

I recently quit smoking and now feel a lump/tightness is my throat. This is very irritating. Any ideas why?? -

I quit smoking for new years and i smoke occasionally [when i go out drinking]. i feel a lump in my throat and i don-t know why. is this contributed to my quitting or could is just be a -cold in my throat- or something else? Someone suggested that the lump is from the -flem- i-ve been caughing up.
you probably have a cold. It could also be from breathing cold dry air.
you should go to a doctor about it. i dunno but i think it might be a tumor. I-M NOT SURE. it also depends on how long you-ve been smoking.

How can i quit smoking? -

I try to stop smoking each day but i couldn-t i get headaches and i just want to have more, i know it-s addicting, that-s why i couldn-t stop, lol

i started smoking because of peer pressure, you know?

i really want to get out of this and quit smoking, any useful tips?..
i need major advice.
From my experience the most difficult time is the first month and the main problem is because such thought - Ok 1 cigarette in a day will not made me to smoke again - , but the truth is that even 1 cigarette will made you to smoke whole packet in just a week ( it was observed in 95% cases ).

For first period I can suggest some pills like Tabex , they help ( at least they worked for me ).

The main problem which you-ll have to face is not the Cigarette itself , but you need to struggle against your old lifestyle. It-s very difficult not to smoke after a good dinner , or during coffee break with friends ( especially if they are smoking ) , in Night Club and ect .

People are smoking very often not because their organism require nicotine ( in that case only 5-6 cigarettes will be enough ) , but just because they are used to .

So smoker is mainly addicted not from cigarette , but from his/her habbits .

Thats why I-ll suggest you

1. Use pills if it-s very difficult for you
2. In under any circumstances do not drink ( if you-ll do I-m sure you-ll smoke ) , and do not try even 1 cigarette
3. Completely change your lifestyle , if you feel that you can-t resist and want to smoke , just go to pool for swimming or for running ( just try be active - Do not watch Tv instead or play poker with friends )
4. Always keep your mind busy ( in order not to think about smoking )

Hope this will help you
I managed to more or less quit completely using lozenges. Its more proactive way of doing it rather than say, putting on a patch and then thats it, hope its working. Lozenges are great for when you need nicotine. you let it dissolve in your mouth against your cheek. It gives you the nicotine you need without the dangerous chemicals and crap in cigarettes. I tried champix, patches, hypnotism, inhalators, microtabs, cold turkey...the lot and never managed it for very long. This has worked for me...so i guess my advice is keep trying every different product and method and find one that works for you.
Hi
In answer to your question i can only relate -How I Quit Smoking Overnight After 40 Years!-
My story goes back 6 years, when after smoking ordinary packet cigarettes from 1- 2 packets a day (And sometimes more) for the previous 34 years, I decided to give them up and swap to hand rolling my own.

This was rightly or wrongly based on the premise that by getting rid of all the chemicals that were in an ordinary cigarette, then my body would be ok, as I was -told- that nicotine in itself does not kill you, it is all the other crap (Sorry chemicals) that they put in man made cigarettes that does the main damage.

There was none of this in a hand rolled cigarette so I was ok wasn-t I!

My rationale did not take into account the amount of actual smoke that was still going into my lungs, and also coking up my whole respiratory system, but I solved that one by being an active twice weekly squash player, so my cardio-vascular would be protected and I would be fit.
The rest of how i gave up is here at http://ezinearticles.com/?How-I-Quit-Smoking-Overnight-After-40-Years!-id=1433595

If I can do it after 40 years then so can you.

Let me know how you get on.

David
Although i do not smoke and i- am against it, you should buy patch-s, eventually stop using them and allow yourself too stop ( will power) and do something else.
Just get past 3 days and the cravings will be less severe. Also try Tyrosine which you can buy from most health food stores.
Hypnotherapy was the road I went down. It worked with me. I was amazed that it worked cos I was kinda skeptic. Heres an artles about it http://stopsmoking-danny.blogspot.com/
I smoked 13 yrs, quit twice.. first time only lasted a year. But have been smoke free for about 5 yrs now and can finally say I don-t miss it. I can even puff a cigar a couple times a year for special occasion without it starting up the craving again. So the only way that will work is cold turkey. My best suggestion is know that for three days you will feel absolutely awful. Step one, throw out the ciggies, the ashtrays, the matches, lighters.. get rid of it all, and get it out of the house.. yes.. you will think about smoking out of the garbage. Might want to put water in the packs, that is what I did. Next step you will need to map out three days when you can be in bed feeling sorry for yourself. Because you will. Lay in bed, wrap up in front of the TV. Take lots of baths because your skin is going to stink and also because it helps with the shaky bad feeling. Just know it is temporary.. it feels bad, but not as bad as lung cancer. If you don-t want to tell everybody you are detoxing from ciggies, just say you are sick. So after that, there will be a period of about one month when you will be really tempted. You have to avoid alcohol if you drink.. because it lowers your self control. This little voice in your head will say I-ll just smoke tonight with this beer and then tomorrow I-ll quit again. Doesn-t work. But after one month, you will have a lot more control. Learn to say No even when every cell of your body is trying to say yes. It does feel bad.. but if you look at it a different way.. that you are STRONG and in control of yourself, then it makes it easier. Focus on the positive, that you are doing it despite the craving, and it will help you.. Also do a lot of visualizations of yourself with healthy clear lungs and a healthy way of life. Visualize your lungs pink and healthy and enjoy just breathing several times a day. When you first quit, you will have a lot of -glop- coming up out of your lungs, and that is normal. Some people even get respiratory infections like bronchitis several times in the first couple months as the dead tissues break down and are replaced with the new.

I would like to know of a really good quit smoking technique that works well.
I really would like to quit smoking, but i like smoking. I know it sounds weird, but i enjoy it sometimes. I really would like to find a good technique to quit this disgusting habit. Has anyone quit successfully and how did you do it? I don-t smoke that much. Usually two packs a week.
I have quit. Going on a few years now (5). To start, you have to get your mind into it, or else it-s pointless. You have to want to quit, if you are having doubts and what not, then don-t bother, it means you-re not ready and you will smoke a cig the moment the oppurtunity arises. Once you get that lined up, then you just do it. No timeline, no dates, no pressure. I did it semi cold turkey. I didn-t do the patch thing. To keep my mouth occupied, I chewed gum, and everytime i got a craving, i chewed gum (wrigleys). I stayed away from my routine, and hung less around my smoker friends. I reduced my weekend bar times and started doing other things like playing basketball, football and so forth in the weekends. Stayed in a lot to watch movies(i had a gf then so it made it easy and she wasn-t a smoker) and just changed my life routine little by little. And after a while, the temptation doesnt end or stop but you keep telling yourself- you worked so hard this far, why give it up, you are stronger-. And that is what it boils down to, your will and strength. So I wish you best of luck, but you will have to WANT this 100 percent or else don-t bother, coz you will just jump back in and it only takes that one stick , and that one moment of weakness to ruin it all. Good luck :)
i am a on again off again smoker. i can quit cold turkey. i make sure i dont start the morning off with a ciggy, and i try to keep busy so i wont want one or think about it. theres always that urge though and especially around friends that smoke. i have heard good things about the new gum they have out now. but you need to have the will power to follow through with quitting. i suggest to stay busy, get rid of all ash trays and ciggys in the house, and keep a stash of small hard candies to suck on to. sometimes it helps. good luck!
I did 2.5 packs a day, then driving into the base one day back in 88 I said, what the hell are you doing to yourself. Threw the pack out the window (sorry about the litter San Diego) and haven-t smoked since.
Become Clairvoyant, that way you have control over developing any habits.
My dad quit cold turkey 2 decades ago. He realize that he had his kids and family to think about, so he quit.
I tried everything to quit. I tried the gum, I tried tapering off, nothing worked. I joined a quit smoking class and they were a great help. The method used was as follows. Take out two cigaretts throw the rest away. Smoke one of them and really enjoy it, inhale and all. Smoke the second one and do not inhale.
After that do not smoke anything at all. This takes you making up your mind not to smoke and really succede. It actually takes 5 days to get the nicatine out of your system. What you have left after that is the physical habit such as lighting up when bored, hungry, or talking on the phone etc.Just remenber that you are a puff away from a pack a day.

Good Luck

I was 50 when I quit and I just turned 75. I never would have made it if I didn-t quit!!!!
You really have to tell yourself that you are really serious
I know the feeling. I really like smoking to. But the way i stopped was really kinda stupid. I wanted to prove to my bf that i could quit before he could and last. We both decided to go cold turkey on the same day. I knew he wouldn-t last so to prove that i could do it better then him i stopped completely. That was Dec 1, 2006. I had once since on NYE and it made me sick. That is when i realised i didn-t want to anymore.

I know its a stupid reason but it worked for me. Perhaps you should find someone else to quit with you for support (not so much my method).

Good Luck
Actually, you know what my husband did---COLD TURKEY.
He used to smoke 1 pack a day. He realized he wanted to quit to live a longer life for his daughter. The only thing he did was change his driving patterns. Like when he would stop at a certain light, he would light up. That-s all.
Yes, I did many years ago, best thing I-ve done in my life. I did it by counting the cigarrettes I smoked each day for 3 months....the next 3 months I maintained the very same number of smokes I consumed, the next 3 months I cut down by 3 cigarretes, the next 3 months, by one, the next three months by 3, the next three months by 1...get the picture. Stay away from people who smoke find new friends and equally important GO TO CHURCH.
find a sport/excersise that u like. excersise is addicting go on a run or a walk outside. you-ll feel better
Yes, I quit. I tried several times to quit and the last one took. I did the cold turkey cure.
I don-t know anyone but a speaker came into my health class a couple of years ago and she works with smokers trying to quit. She said that cold turkey is the most effective way to quit.

Oh and I can tell you that patches and gum doesn-t work since my parents have tried those.
i used the gum..havent smoked in 6 months, but i do still crave them..so when i have a craving, i pop in a piece of gum, (or 2) i was a pack a day smoker and it has helped me quite well..i still miss smoke, i enjoyed it too, but i wanted to see my daughter grow up so that was my inspiration..good luck to you..
Just quit....it-s bad for you. I quit 10 months ago today successfully.
Get some gum and drink lots of water. Eat small snacks through out the day so you won-t get all shaky and jittery. You will feel better after a couple of weeks. Your clothes will smell cleaner and so will your breath. Best of luck.
My husband started smoking at 8. He is 26 now. he quit three years ago, cold turkey. He tried in the past to ween himself but it wasjust that more tempting. He finally just quit and Im so proud of him.
Yer i stopped wen i was 17, i didnt have to try.i just started lifting weights n smoking became something i hated, it made me sick.the crap thats in fags iz just nasty sooooooo bad 4 ur health, ages ur skin n makes u look like **** wen ur older.Dont 4 get that ur habbits and lifestyle wen ur young dictates the way u look wen ur older.U wanna b a fit n healthy old person or a unhealthy breathless ugly old git????U decide
Yes I have finally after a very long time .
yes i QUIT.. instead right now i always craving to suck my husband-s xxCK

Would hanging up posters all over my house help me quit smoking? -

Would hanging up posters all over my house help me quit smoking? -

I can quit. I have stopped before, but it is my BIG vice. My husband smokes and that does not help, plus I have bad anxiety problems. I know that nicotine is bad for anxiety, but when I get mad or worried I seem to smoke more. Plus I smoke a lot when I am on the computer. What can I do to finally quit. My Birthday is Friday and doing this for myself would be my best gift ever. So what should I do and how do I not give in to my crutch? Should I just smoke a few a day or go cold turkey again or pray reverently. AWWWWWW I am so confused. I was thinking that maybe posters all around the house would remind me of all the negatives about smoking. Hmmmmm.....
Posters is a creative idea.
Another way is: whenever you want to smoke, chew a stick of gum.
This way you can-t smoke because you can-t chew gum and smoke simultaneously.
Here-s my little 2 cents. Try the gum or the patch (I know they-re EXPENSIVE, my husband is about to quit smoking and we-re looking at the financial issue that entails) but, a box of the patch (at least where I am) costs the amount of a cartin, and lasts for two weeks. The gum.... some people get addicted. My husband did when he first tried. But, the patch and the gum, have significantly less of the health risks than smoking, not to mention the second hand smoke.

I can guess that there is nothing worse than having a spouse smoke when you want to quit. Maybe a -rule- of this can be that he smokes outside (unless that-s impractible). Just a suggestion.
I wish you the best!!
I quit a little while ago, cold turkey. What may help is for you to print up little notes as to why you are going to quit. Like it-s better for my health or I-ll live longer. Just little things like that. Another thing that I did that helped me, every time I wanted a smoke, I would go for a nice brisk walk or I hopped on my bike and went for a ride. Use cinnamon too. It comes in many forms and you can use them all, hard candies, toothpaste, mouth wash, gum, breath mints. It helped me to use cinnamon when I wanted a smoke. I only quit 3 1/2 months ago and it was because the company my husband works for decided to start charging smokers $100.00 more a month for insurance. So I just quit. It wasn-t as hard as I though it was going to be but still today I will think about it and want one. Then I tell myself -it will never ever be that easy to quit again- and I don-t have one.

Good Luck and my thoughts and prayers will be with you.
You already know what the negatives are, do you really need to be reminded?

You will quit when your mind is ready.
They say the third time is a charm, and for me, it was. The first time, I used Cigarrest, stopped for over a year. Second time, cold turkey, stopped for 6 months.

The last time, I made my mind up I wanted to put them down. My doctor gave me a prescription for Wellbutrin. (generic Zyban). I took it for a week, and kept smoking. At the end of the week, I put them down, and even with major stress in my life, hav e not picked them up in 11 years. I took the medication for 30 days.

Talk to your doctor. The most important part is, YOU have to want to put them things down. Nothing is a silver bullet to make you stop, it takes you as part of the cure
Good for you that you want to quit. My husband quit about 2 years ago. He picked a day (like you are picking Friday - happy birthday!) and stuck to it. I printed out pictures from the internet of lungs from people that smoked and of people that didn-t smoke. The smokers lungs were disgusting. I put them all over the place. Everytime he wanted a cigarette he would call me and I would just keep saying to him - you don-t need one, just get through this craving. Don-t give in to the craving - tell yourself you can do this and you can - it-s all about will power! Be strong!! Have lots of lollipops around. Think about how much healthier you will be, how your clothes won-t smell, how you-ll be able to breath better, taste things better, how much money you will save.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Have a great birthday and BE STRONG!
I heard hypnosis works.

Anyone that has ever had to quit can you please give me some advice to quit??
Cold Turkey. I saw my husband do it after smoking for over 25 years with no problem, burt I wasn-t ready. Nine months later I decided I really wanted to quit, so I did cold turkey after 20 years of smoking. It was hard emotionally, not physically, for maybe 2 weeks tops.

You can do it! You just have to WANT to quit. Here-s a star to get you going! Start right now, and be proud to say, -I don-t smoke.-

Bless you! :)
Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

It is key to stay positive, don-t focus on the cravings. Keep the reasons why you want to quit circling through your head. This will keep your spirit and motivation high. Cravings will ease as a result.

If you keep your focus on the negatives you are reinforcing a false belief that is too hard to quit. There are no real negative side effects to quitting, only positive ones. The longer you have stayed smoke free the easier the quitting process becomes. If you truly want to quit, believe that you can and you will.

Good Luck and Good Quitting
honestly i just quit one day to another, but there-s a lot of was know like patches which they say are very helpfull, or try smoking everyday less and less, until you don-t have the urge for it, think of why you want to quit so when u do u feel guilty of doing it. Best of lucks and wish you the best I know it-s hard but you can do it just put ur mind to it
I smoked for 25 years. Tried everything to quit and I did quit. A thousand times. It-s different for everyone. I finally realized that I could never quit smoking. All I could do was stop smoking. Didn-t quit just stopped smoking. I decided I wanted to live and have been smoke free for 2 years. But they are always there asking me to come back and enjoy. When I did stop (not quit) the monster was huge and overwhelming always close at my heels. War was declared. Battle after battle was fought but the monster would never quit. There would never be a truce. One day at a time one battle at a time. Then I had the revelation that I have heard comes only with time. I never really enjoyed smoking.
I was a two pack a day person. One morning on my way to work, I opened the car window and threw out my only pack of cigs. I could not smoke at work so that evening, I fought with myself to not stop and get a another pack. The next morning I realized I had gone 24 hours without a cig (longest time in 14 years) I them made it a game with myself to continue to go just one more day. After about a week your craving will be much less. It has now been 17 years without a cig and I no long cough and get throat problems in the winter.
I-m taking Chantix right now. It cuts off the nicotine receptors in the brain. My wife used it and she has been 4 months without one. They really make the smokes taste bad and as soon as you light it you want to put it out. I just light my cigarette and hold and maybe puff it twice. I was smoking up to 40 a day so its probably take a minute for me to totally quit. It has made me to have a couple wacko dreams, which I-ve heard it does.
nicotine gums really do help. and what i did was just have one cigarette in my pocket so whenever it was time to smoke i would just put it in my mouth and pretend like im smoking it. it really helped me i hope it does the trick for you too.
All you have to do is quit for two days and you can quit for life!
smoke one in the morning and then one at night and leave your cig. on the table. don-t bring it everywhere you go.

Hey !! Angel !!. This is great! I looked at the link so I can answer you BUT that-s where you can find me after I join/register.THANKS for making the site known. A few days ago, I was going to get on here and ask about that LaserConcepts where they zap your ear, and see if anyone had success with that. But hey, this is great. Probably better. Thanks.
Some folks do not want to quit, its a matter of taste
Tobacco is American Heritage.
Smoking drains vitamin A,C,E from the body so it needs to be
replaced if u do smoke.
Some folks smoke up til they are 90 and still in good health and eat right and take their vitamins.
Other things are worser for your health , like carpet and cats in folks homes that hurt their lungs far more worser than smoke.
