What is the best way to quit smoking, Ive tried the patch.? -

Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
If you really wanted to....you-d just go cold turkey. I did. It wasn-t easy but well worth the discomfort. Are YOU important enough to yourself to do you this favor? WHERE-S THE SELF-LOVE PEOPLE?
Well there is a new drug out that my doctor told me about called Chantix. When I decide to quit, I-ll probably give it a try. I tried the patch once and I quit for 3 months. It was rough, I tell you.

Good luck!
Initially, I tried using the patch and Wellbutrin and neither did much to alleviate the cravings. Three days in, I stopped both of those and started using Commit lozenges, which not only helped with the cravings but really satisfied the oral fixation I had. I started with the 4 mg ones but found them to be a bit too strong (one of the side affects can be -intense hiccupping- and they aren-t kidding) so after a few days I switched to the 2 mg and those seemed to do the trick. I am proud to say I haven-t smoked for almost 3 years now and that after a 2 pack a day habit for over 25 years. Good luck and if you can-t do it this time, don-t beat yourself up over it...just keep trying.
Chop off your fingers. You will have trouble holding the cig.
cold turkey

My Dad has to quit smoking, any tips.? -

For medical reasons he has to quite smoking. He has smoked ever since I can remember and I think even before. (I think HS age somewhere and he just turned 50) I have started by getting him candies in little baggies to have everywhere. He tried to patch once but it made him feel like he had arthritus and he said it also made him want to smoke more, and gum hurts his teeth and mouth so the nicoteen gum is out. Has any ever tried the lozenge? What helped you the most?
Perhaps joining a Quit Smoking Clinic might be an option.
I smoked for 15 years. I did the gum. Off of it now and been smoke-free for 5 weeks. First step is WANTING to quit. Otherwise, it-s useless...
My hair dresser quit smoking by using a pill. I dont remember the name but maybe you could look the kinds up. I quit smoking for a month now, but I have only been smoking for 5 years. So I would imagine that it is much harder for your dad. Best of luck to you.
My dad is 52 and he recently had to quit smoking because of emphysema. He used Chantix. It-s a prescription pill that is pretty expensive. It blocks the nicotine from getting into the receptors in the brain, decreasing the urge to smoke. It really helped him a lot. My 25-year-old sister swears by it too. I have not been brave enough to try it though.
congratulate him give him a gift

Is there a very easy way to quit smoking cigarette? -

Is there a very easy way to quit smoking cigarette? -

Depends on the person and how long they have smoked. Some people are able to stop completely, with little difficulty. The most effective way is a combination of a smoking cessation program and medications. Medications might include Zyban, Nicorette gum, or the Nicoderm patches.
go to the health food store they have herbs and pills ... and many of them too. its to east the quitting process. good luck..
YA ..
Stop lighting them.
Quitting smoking is as easy as having will power. If you can-t just stop, you-re too weak of a human being. The easy way to quit is to just stop. Simple.
eat mints then you when you smoke you will get turned off them straigh away. they taste really bad after a mint
I think you have to really have the desire to quit and then you can do it. see I don-t want to quit so I would be a failure if I tried. My husband quit cold turkey over 10 years ago, this is because he wanted to. I am sure the day will come when I will be forced to quit but until then I am going to enjoy them, it is my own stress relief, no I am not an idiot I know what smoking does and I am not promoting it I worked in the medical field for well over 20 years I seen the effect I am just being honest about it.
ya don-t do it
Yes. Just desire it, and leave it alone.
stop buying them
Works for alot of die hard smokers I know.
http://www.chantix.com

yup
try -transdermal patches- for tabacco ask ur doc abt it its more easy then u can think it would be
nothing work sreally. just throw ithe pack away and stop completely. initially you will get the urge , but gradually it iwll disappear. your mind will clear and you will be able to think better. healthwise also u will feel more energetic
don-t buy cigs - keep them out of house
That depends in part on how hooked the user is, both physically, - emotionally. Replacing a habit is easier than just stopping one.

There is a relatively new prescription called CHANTIX that works pretty well. After 20 years of smoking I quit and its been 7 months now. Realize that you have to want to quit and you have to try.
If there is, i think there won-t be so many smokers around. Just tell yourself how bad smoking is for your (and people close to you) health and stick to that reason, then I think you can do it.
nop, not an easy way, its either cold turkey or patches and neither are easy
Yes, as soon as you see this message, say -I quit smoking right now!- and throw away any cig. left with you and stop buying anymore! See, it-s that easy!
That depends on your motive(s) for quitting. To really want to change is good, but if you don-t want, completely, to quit, then you won-t be able to. If you want to then you will be able to, reguardless of the method you choose.

First you need to understand that when you stop smoking that there are going to be some side affects because your body needs time to adjust to not having nicotine in it. You may feel withdrawal symptoms and in the first few weeks it is important to fight these cravings to have nicotine.

I quit smoking 4 months ago and guess what happened? -

I put on over 30lbs - i have tried everything, starting with starving, then tried an expensive gym membership, have now bought my own stationery bike and am a member of weight watchers. I-ve lost .4lb in the last 4 weeks yipee - now I have just bought kevin trudeau-s weight loss book - please tell me have I just wasted $50.00 or does this work.
it true. you try distract yourself from smoking a cigarette by eating.
You were using smoking for oral gratification and giving up smoking must have increases stress levels and made your weight go up. Since I have not read that book, no comment. If you find it useful, fine, else donate it to a library.
You just wasted $50 for info you can get free on the internet.
firstly, congratulations on giving up smoking - much better for your health!

Secondly, this won-t make you feel any better, but weight loss is pretty simple - just burn off more calories than you take in. I-d suggest doing regular cardio at the gym (say most days, or every other day) to burn calories, and weight training to increase your muscle mass and therefore your metabolic weight (every other day would be good). If you do this for a week or two and you-re not losing weight, eat less Calories and/or do more cardio (upto say 30-45mins per day); repeat until you-re losing 1-2lb/week. And yes, that is easier said than done. This site is good for general advice on exercise/diet -
http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php

Thirdly, I-m afraid you-ve wasted 50bucks on the book. Trudeau-s advice is largly stupid, sometimes dangerous - don-t touch with a barge pole. At least you can avoid wasting any more money buy not buying the junk natural -cures- the bloke recommends.
most of the time, quitting smoking makes people gain weight at first, then u gotta start watching ur eating habits, and stick to regular excercises, if u say u spend all this money, expensive membership, etc., then u should do fitness as well as cardio, like running, and/or walking. in this way will also help u get u breathing better faster, specially for a former smoker
I quit smoking and didn-t gain any weight. In fact, I lost about 10 pounds.
I wouldn-t say you wasted your money but I think you should have done your research on quitting smoking. I did and I found that you gain weight when you quit smoking. Trust me your energy wasn-t wasted in quitting. Use the book and keep trying and the weight will come off.
I quit and put on about 40 pounds. My doctor told me I was better off with the extra weight.
I have since lost that weight by taking up a healthy lifestyle. Mountainbiking, ultra running, triathlons and such and I-m in my forties. So just don-t give up and don-t go back to smoking.
Hang in there. I quit smoking and gained 70 pounds in a year using food to substitute for my nicotine addiction. I then made up my mind to lose the weight and I just ate 4 oz of steak and a glass of orange juice everyday for 7 weeks. My doctor was really mad at me. You don-t need to be so drastic. Just watch what you eat and continue to exercise and your metabolism will eventually straighten up. As an incentive put the money you used to spend on cigarettes in a coffee can or even the bank and when you lose the weight you can buy yourself something nice. Keep up the good work. I-m proud of you!
First of all, Congratulations on quitting smoking!

My boss at work quit smoking also yet she did not gain ANY weight.

She told us that she has been following the tips she obtain from this fitness expert on the internet.

I listed the website for you below.

She said to lose weight...you need to burn the fat.

I hope the following website and tips will be helpful to you.

Keep up the good work!

When does a persons metabolism goes back to normal, after she quit smoking? -

I quit smoking on Jan.4,2007. But I don-t understand what you mean about going back to -normal-. I quit for 3 years prior to that and went back to it for 6 months. Jan. 4th was 6 months. Then I officially quit for good. This time there are no cravings if that is what you mean. Each person is different. They way I feel may not be how you are feeling. But if you crave then eat sunflower seeds, gum, hard candy, etc. If you worry about weight gain, then eat diet stuff. Good luck and congratulations. It will be worth it in the long run. Quiting after 32 years of smoking was very hard. It was the hardest thing I ever done. The important thing is to set a goal for yourself and it will help you stay quit. Mine was to pay more money on the house payment. Having the house paid off was more important than having a cigarette. I quit by not putting one in my mouth and lighting it. If I put one in my mouth now and light it I would just go back to it even if I don-t crave them. If I did it, anybody can do it.
You are welcome. Congratulations and don-t give up. Each time you want a cigarette think about the reasons why you quit. I know I can-t afford to smoke and pay off the house. I don-t want to lose the house. Have a strong goal for yourself and be determined. Good luck.

No! I know that is not what you want to hear, but after you quit smoking you will put on weight. It is very, very hard to lose. Think healthy. Exercise.

I did gain 40kg-s but over the years I have lost it plus more.

I watched as my clothes got tighter after quitting but decided my weight lose could wait as my quitting smoking was priorty.

I have tried to quit smoking several times and no luck...what else can I do? please help? -

I have a serious disease that requires to not smoke, of course i still smoke,,, stupid me.... i have tried several times and no luck, i have tried hard candies, cinnamon, I cant afford quit smoking aids such as niccorette and things like that. please help i am at my wits end. I really need too and want too quit any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have asthma, and yet I smoked for seven years before I learned I was pregnant. I quit cold turkey right then and there. My love for my unborn child was greater than any addiction, and I wanted what I new was best for my child. After he was born I began smoking again due to some unbearable stress. I made sure to smoke outside, change my shirt wash, my hands and face before touching my child. When I became pregnant again I knew I could stop smoking cold turkey. This time it was harder, but I had to fight the urge to smoke, and the longer I went with out one, the better I felt. I was able to convince myself that cigarettes would make me sick, physically, and that was all I needed to over come the addiction.

My advice certainly is not to get pregnant, but if you have a serious disease that requires you not to smoke than you should quit. You love for yourself, and those that love you will be all you need to overcome the addiction. Start small, set goals and make those goals. i.e. one hour, then two, then three, until you can go a full day, then two days, then a week, then two weeks. You-ll be amazed by how quickly you can kick the habit. Once you do, what ever you do don-t go back. That may sound a Hippocratic, but that is what you got to do. GOOD LUCK!
Instead of spending your $ on the smokes, spend it on an aid that will help you stop. Smoking is a serious addiction and you need help to kick the habbit. Perhaps your insurance will cover some type of help?
Good luck.
There is a new medication out called Chantix, ask your Doctor about it. I bet it will work for you.
Just don-t think about smoking, spend your money on something more important. If you can-t get your mind off of it, try to get out and hang out with some of your friends, or just go out and have fun. Eventually, smoking will slip your mind and you will just forget about it. Or if you still are having trouble, then when you go out places to buy groceries or something, only bring money for the things you need to buy and don-t bring any extra money, that way you won-t be able to buy any cigarrettes. good luck breaking your habit :)
My doctor put me on a medication called Wellbutrin XL.I quit smoking the day after I started using the medication.
Admit yourself in a de-aductive hospital.
Take the money you would spend on cigs and get you some smoke away.....trust me....that stuff works.
It is very hard to quit. When I really want to quit I don-t have that much of a problem; but it does help to keep your hands (and mind)busy. Keep a pencil in your hand and chew on it, or chew gum. It amazes me when I-ve quit.... how use to having that cig in your hand all the time.
decide that you want to quit plan it and gather some money plan a tour specially to a new land outside the country try to choose a country where your brand is not available and enjoy your time without smoking hope you will trust yourself then that you can quit

only way to quit is quit. i know it sounds mean but its the truth. i quit after smoking 3 packs a day for 45 years and having my right lung removed from cancer.
I tried everything.I even smoked on the patch, which is bad for your heart i hear. Then one time I lost my voice and it hurt to talk more less anything else. I had strep throat for a week and couldn-t handle smoking and at the end of the week when i felt better i held a cigg to my lips and lit it up, inhaled, gaged at the taste, spit it out and promised myself i would never forget just how bad it tasted so i wouldn-t ever want to start again. Ever have to quit and then the first chance you get to smoke you light up and how bad it tastes butt you over come that just out of the want to smoke again? That-s the one you can-t let get by. best of luck
Have you tried cutting back gradually? In the end the best help comes from your on mind. LOL we just have to convince ourselves. I would suggest cutting back gradually. If you smoke a pack a day....cut back to 3/4 of a pack. One good way is to set times and amounts that you are allowed to smoke. If you fail once no big deal. Tomorrow is another day. The following week cut back some more. You decide the amount, even if it is only one cigarette. This will make you feel like you have achieved something, without all the resentment because you are -having- to quit. Hope this helps.
well try and keep your self away from the cigarettes. Use Nicoderm CQ something ask your doctor about how you can quit and they can give you a prescription for Nicoderm and some time sooner or later you-ll be done.
My dad quit cold Turkey...that he stopped him self from cigarettes...you may get bad severe headaches...thats called a nicotene headache..and u get crabby...but your better off...and u won-t stay that way.
But its better to quit...them ruin your body some more.
I tired all that stuff too, the gum, the patch all that stuff..I know you said you cant afford much, but I got the shot for it, its costs about $500, but it cleans it all out of your system so you dont have cravings, the best advice they gave me is to change the habits that you do when you smoke...like if you have one after a coffee or something, is to do something else out of that routine so you dont crave it..then get lots of altoids..!! its sucks but can be done..good luck
go cold turkey! Throw away your supply, and ask some one (your best friend) to be you accountablity partner. When you feel the need to smoke call her and let her talk you out of it. In your wallet put a bold lettered card -I don-t smoke- so that when you almost buy cigarettes you can stop. And think of all the money you can save and spend on other things - put the money aside and reward yourself with something special you haven-t been able to afford before!!!
This is the method - modified of course - that I used to stop cussing- it works!!!

Good Luck!!!
It takes willpower. When in the hospital I had a doctor shake his finger at me and say you better quit smoking or else. That was in 1976 and for an oldman I feel great.I also saved a lot of money
I am afraid you have heard this lots of times but believe me that-s the only way:I am telling you this from my own experience.I used to be a heavy smoker and I had tried to quit several times unsuccesfully until last year when I eventually made up my mind I threw away my last pack of cigarettes and there ends the story and a new one begins .Life free of nikotinne.

I have tried to quit smoking several times and no luck...what else can I do? please help? -

How soon after quitting smoking does the shortness of breath go away? -

How soon after quitting smoking does the shortness of breath go away? -

This question is for former smokers. If a person stops smoking, how soon afterward will the shortness of breath go away if that person is otherwise healthy and fit? Also, how soon will taste return?
First of all, if you just quit smoking, CONGRATULATIONS. You did yourself a big favor.

You should start expecting your taste and smell to start improving after 48 hours. This process will be gradual but after 9-14 days your sense of taste will return to normal. Your smelling ability will wait till your cough clears up. This could take up to 4 weeks, depending on how much do your lungs exercise.

Shortness of breath will start getting better 72 hours after your quit but it depends on your activity level. If you do yoga ( kapalbhati -
http://www.how-to-quit-cigarettes.com/yo…
) you could see great results in less than 10 days. Alternatively vigorous running, jogging, and cardio will help your lungs clear up soon and your breathing will become -better- between 5-7 days). It might take up to a month for a fit person who exercises regularly to get back his/her breathing to normal.

The above values may vary based on your weight, the number of cigarettes you smoked every day before quitting and the number of years you smoked before you quit.

Just remember, once you start feeling better, use that as your motivation to stay smoke free.

( I smoked for 18 years and quit when I was 30 which means I smoked for more than half my age. After quitting I realized that I never had a reason to smoke, it only did bad to me and all the good things like increasing concentration, releasing stress, etc was only BS and lies that I told myself. My concentration is way more than it ever was, I am a lot happier, more energetic and stress free, ever since I quit smoking. So once you quit, there actually is no reason for you to go back to smoking. THINK AGAIN.)
Can-t really say, as I started exercising and stuff at the same time, and I wasn-t exactly measuring my shortness of breath every day. I wouldn-t recommend quitting with the expectation of feeling better soon -- a watched kettle never boils, as they say, and you-ll probably get frustrated and go back to smoking.

All I can tell you is that I felt better sooner than I expected, and that I-ve always been glad I quit.
That will depend on whether or not there is permanent damage to your lungs. If you have smoked long enough to have emphysema, you might always have some shortness of breath. Otherwise, you should start seeing improvements in just a month or two. Taste can take longer but it should be back within a year.
You-re going to be short of breath if you are just starting a workout program anyway. Dunno how long it takes to come back. But I-m a smoker, and I run 3 miles a day, no problems. Just do what you gotta do, don-t blame the cigarettes. Quit if you want to (you should), but shortness of breath isn-t from the cigarettes, it-s from you working past your ability.
I am on day 7 of quitting. I have noticed that my smell is super sensitive and that food does seem to have more flavor but it does not seem to be that much of a difference.

I have read that it takes different amount of time for different people. Exercise helps and breathing exercises

I am also using a support group that I love.
depends on the person, how much they smoked...
it took my hair dresser almost 2 yrs. (she smoked for 20 yrs...) it took my boss 18 mnths. (she died from lung cancer) it took my mother-in-law about 2 yrs (then she got cancer and COPD..she-s still alive though, but stuck in the house on oxygen 24/7)
My parents both died before THEY stopped. (my dad was 48 yrs old by 10 days, my mother 54.)
I smoked 2 packs a day for over 20 years before I quite 5 years ago...

I am still out of breath... you see, I waited to long.... I now have COPD and have to use oxygen 24/7, but I-m hanging in there....

But to answer your question... about six weeks before you notice any real difference in breathing.... and my taste has, for the most part, stayed the same.

GOOD LUCK !!!
in about a year all the effects should be minimal or unnoticeable. it depends on how much you smoked and for how long.
God bless and congrats on stopping.
It takes months for me to get better for shortness of breath, but it-s getting better. Stop smoking will stop further damages to your body, it-s TRUE. Good luck!
Took me about two three weeks. I can ride my bike for hours now and not feel like I am going to die cause I can-t get enough air. I still need to train my lungs better after 5 years of killing my lungs!
about a year
