What did you personally do 4urself to help in alleviating mild depression/irritation when u quit smoking? -

Something(s) that made you feel cheery or help keep your spirits up when you quit smoking like say the 1st 3 months. [you know how difficult it can be in the beginning .... ]
I want to relearn some of the techniques w/out relapsing into that habit again.
And do you still personally ever have cravings after your quit? If so, how often?
I have been smoke free for 10 years. I felt vulnerable for the first three years - I avoided all the usual traps: Coffee breaks, Christmas parties, People who smoke, Bars, all the triggers.
The best thing I said to myself was - If I ever have one puff of a cigarette, it-s just a matter of time until I-ll be a smoker again-- I-m an addict and I can never have a cigarette again-.
I used the patch for the first 6-8 weeks and it helped allot to contain the cravings. I laundered - cleaned everything in the house so I couldn-t smell smoke.
I bought an expensive item to motivate me on the amount of money I was saving in 6 months.
Ten years later, I always say that it was the one thing in my life that I am most proud of! I don-t have wrinkles, smell bad, and I have less debt - more money.
It -ain-t- easy to quit this terrible addiction but it-s well worth the effort. Get help, walk it out, talk it out but do it!
Since I started to work out I was looking for a good weight loss product. I was on a diet but I felt that I needed a little -help- so I decided to try this great product and I had fantastic results. You can check their website at
http://www.greathealthyes.info , they give you a free trial and you only pay 6.95$ shipping and handling.

have your orgasms gotten better since you have quit smoking?
Uhhmmmm this is the first I-ve ever heard of orgasms getting better from quiting smoking. There-s lots of things that have gotten better since I quit smoking but I never noticed a correlation with quiting smoking and my orgasms. That-s just me.
omg yes!!!! they are so much better!!!
i feel no difference on my orgasm when i was still smoking and now that i quittd
No, they-re exactly the same.

I want to quit smoking but I have joined weight watchers? -

smoking thing.....Now I not making up excuses NOT to give up, because I WANT to give up. But where I was starting this weight Watchers, Im worried about putting on weight if I give up, I mean when I tried earlier this year, I put on 7 pounds, and haven-t been able to shake it off since, Thats half a stone, and I have to loose 4 stones to get to my target weight. So should I loose the weight first then quit smoking? or do it all together?
Do it all together! Throw all your strength and willpower into the pot, go on long walks or whatever suits you as exercise to take your mind off smoking and lose weight, spend your evenings distracting yourself by learning how to cook delicious healthy food - just go for it. Big lifestyle changes are always difficult, so you may as well throw yourself into it and become the person you want to be in one big go - it-ll be worth it. Good luck Hxx
Girl I know the Feeling!
I tried quiting also and piled on stone over 2weeks! So yes you will pile on the weight and 4 stone is gonna take time especially when you will start only dropping 2-3ibs a week after the first 2 weeks of your diet. So be smart one problem at a time..get the weight off first then tackle the smoking!

I recommend you buy Alan carrs book on stopping smoking which is amazing but wait until you have lost the 4 stone you wanna shift...
Good luck, be strong - happy dieting!
Why don-t you ask the counsellors at Weight Watchers?
Getting rid of two addictions in one bang is a big ask .prioritise which holds the most importance in your life(you went to weightwatcers first so that is self evident)and take it from there.Alternativley just eat the fags, they are very low on calories and are a good source of fibre.good luck.
Well done for trying to give up I know how hard it is to do!! I quit using the tablet Zyban off the doctor but theres a similar on called Champix out now and they both stop the cravings so you don-t start snacking when you want a cigarette because you don-t notice you want one, but also try chewing sugar free chewing gum as well. Rather than Weight Watchers try Slimming World. Its a slimming club like Weight Watchers but you don-t need to worry about point counting and there are certain foods you can eat as much of as you like and still loose weight plus you don-t feel hungry. The diet isn-t as straight forward to follow but it-s easy to do and much easier to stick to!! So don-t give up I know you can do it Best of luck!!
Stopping smoking is seriously tough. I used to smoke and the addiction is very strong and difficult to get over. Dieting, especially with weightwatchers - which is quite a strict regime - at the same time would probably send you mad.

I-d say the best thing to do is take some regular excercise - even if it-s just walking - try and eat less sweet stuff and quit smoking first.

The benefits of not smoking will outweigh (no pun intended) the benefits of dieting. Once you have got used to not smoking you could try a diet, but you might be better off joining a gym when you quit the cigs cause you-ll have loads of nervous energy to use up and you-ll naturally tone up there.

Good luck with it, whatever you decide on.
You-re trying to change habits - both eating habit - eating the wrong foods, and the smoking habit.

Habits are created by behavior. Most people think that they can change habits via will power, etc. But the only way to change a habit is to change behavior. Weight watchers does it by telling you what to eat. By eating what they say to eat, you are changing your behavior. The problem with weight watchers is 1) they charge too much 2) they do portion control. A better solution is to eat a proper low fat, low cholesterol diet.
As for smoking, it doesn-t work to cut back, or to use patches or anything like that. A habit is stored in one-s subconscious, and can only be change by behavioral changes. It takes a long time to create or change a habit - some studies say 100 days.

When you stop smoking, it will affect your body chemestry for awhile. That is why it is so important that you also change your eating habits too to ensure that you are getting the proper nutrition without excess calories.

Low fat - 35 grams per day (read the labels)
Low cholesterol - no fowl, or red meats, just one small helping of fish per week.
High amount of complex carbohydrates - not simple carbohydrates (e.g. sugars). Complex carbohydrates fill you up - keeping you from feeling hungry, and you can eat lots of them. They-re also great for your digestive system.

Excess weight is a symptom of poor eating habits. Concentrate on changing the habit, not on losing weight.
My advice would be to do one at a time, quit smoking first, yes you will put weight on but once youve conquered that vice, join weightwatchers, there will be a club where you live, then lose the weight. If you do boh together you will probably find yourself yoyo dieting, which we all know is not good for you. If you want to do both, change small things in your diet, like cut out bread, replace sweet things with lovely sweet fruit. Which will help you with the calorie intake at least.
Prioritise.

I planned to give up smoking this year and wanted to lose weight. I lost weight first, I don-t weigh myself but went down a size in clothes.
I gave up smoking over a month ago, I have eaten more and put a bit of weight on, but not as much as I had to start with.
When push comes to shove I prioritise the smoking, its easier to have a day of the diet than a day off giving up smoking.
I think I-ve probably stabilised a bit now, I-m not trying to lose weight exactly, just not put it on whilst going through the non smoking trials!
It also helps that I-m spending my cigarette money on clothes so that-s another incentive to stay in the size smaller clothes. I will try and lose weight again when I feel the smoking issue is more under control.

Good luck, both these things are bloody hard work on their own, never mind together! Don-t be too hard on yourself either. I was smoking for 16 years, and if I keep in mind I also gained my excess weight over 16 years then its not like I could possibly do all that in one day, week, month or even year.
Both these things are long term lifestyle changes not a goal you can suddenly achieve.
Commit lozenges. 0 calories, nicotine bliss.

http://www.commitlozenge.com/

You don-t put on weight just by giving up smoking, you put on weight because you replace the cigarettes with food. This would probably be the best time to give up smoking because hopefully you should be very aware of what you are eating.

There are many different methods that can help you quit smoking. The best way is cold turkey - just stopping all together. The first three days are the hardest, but if you can get past that, it gets easier. You have to have a lot of self-control, I quit for a year this way, but even a year later I continued to crave cigarettes. There-s products like gum that you can chew and patches you can wear to help you quit. I-ve never tried the patches, but the gum didn-t work for me. It clearly states on the box that there isn-t nicotine in the gum, and it tastes horrible. If I had believed there was nicotine in the gum, it may have worked, but that was not the case. The coolest thing I-ve seen is ear staples. It-s a procedure that you can get done, where they put tiny staples on a certain part of your ear, which is a reflection point. The pressure from the staples activates a neuron in your brain that erases the cravings. These staples are also good for stress relief, migraines, and weight loss. A friend of mine told me about them, and if she hadn-t, I wouldn-t have even noticed that she had them.
Believe in yourself that you can do quit smoking by 2007...lessen the no. sigarettes per day and later you could skeep smoking already..no more no less
i say, first u cant quit it all..so go step wise..if u smoke 10 per day, lets say, then every day try reducing 1..tht way ur body will; also get acustomed and u wont feel the trouble..
Theres a cigarette out thats called Quest. It comes in 3 strenghs. The first being the strongest and the 3rd has no nicotine at all. I know several people that have quit smoking using these. All 3 of my brothers have quit this way also. There available here at speedway gas stations.
The first thing is that you have to really want to stop. If you are trying to stop because of someone else, you will not succeed. If it really is for -you-, you need to change habits of other things that you normally do when you are smoking. Don-t buy any and try to stay away from other smokers for atleast a few days, this will make it a lot easier. Good luck to you!
Hypnosis
First you have to tell yourself that you can quite smoking from now. Keep telling it until it register in your mind. Next, tell your friends that you are going to quit smoking. Ask god to help quit smoking.
You may not be from NYState, but this is a very informative and supporting site. If you are not from NYState, your State might have a similar site. There is also the American Lung Association.

Really the only way you can help is not to smoke areound them. Everything else they have to do themselves.
They have 2 want 2 quit. Patches work. It-s a hard habit to quit. It is a routine too. They have to change their life in order 2 quit. U can be supportive. Hope this helped.
Be as supportive as possible, and remember that nagging doesn-t work.
get them to start chewing gum
when they have a craving for a smoke
start doing some exercise
a walk a day
then increase the exercise
to maybe a jog, swim, or bike riding
be patient and understand how hard it is and even if they go back encourage them to stop and not be mad at them fora weak moment
u can-t do anything but be supportive. perhaps help them avoid tempting situations.
This is not a cure-all but,
You may want to consider going to

Hope this helps!
Hypnotherapy could help
Encouragement of thei goals and don-t YOU smoke.
If they actually want to quit, you can help!

Don-t smoke around them.
Carry gum in case they have a craving.
Don-t let them smoke around you.
Suggest activities where there will not be much smoking. IE. Go to a party at your local club, rather than someone-s house.
Make sure they know you support their decision, and offer to be an on-call friend in case they need someone to talk them out of having a smoke. Believe it or not, it is a big help.
Also, try not to talk about smoking or quitting smoking around them. Just the reminder of a cigarette can bring on a craving.

I hope this helps you out, I-m sure I could think of more given time. Just remember, you are helping just by being a friend and supporting their decision. If they fail, it is not your fault. Also, if they fail, don-t judge them. It will make it harder for them to try again. Just because they fall off of the wagon, doesn-t mean that they won-t accept the arm of a friend to help them climb back on.
If they seriously want to quit, I simply don-t allow them to smoke around me. The rest is up to them.
Do not lecture to them by saying how this or how that. The person already knows this.

Put up with there snapping at you and the irritability without saying one word to them.

Best thing to do when someone is quitting smoking is keep your mouth shut!! Worst thing about non smokers or those who had quit is they think they are so much better then the one smoking. What works for one to stop doesn-t work for another. Do not be one of these kinds of people.

What advice can you give to help my boyfriend and I quit smoking? -

i agree with most others,ya have to want it befor itll stick,

i started when i was 7,learned to inhale at 9,smoked at least a pack a week till i was 14 ,then a pack a day till i was 26.ive been quitted for 2 weeks and i can say the only time i cant controll my cravings is when im drunk.(i quit for 1yr 1/2 ,then my girl left me so i hit the bottle hard for a couple years,im not over her yet,but self controll is the 1st step)

HONESTLY,GOOD LUCK!
Use an all-or-nothing strategy, meaning don-t give it up gradually, don-t use nicotine chewing gum or any of that stuff. Make a very firm decision to quit, and then keep your promise to yourself. This is a painful but effective strategy if you have enough will power!
just quit and tolerate torture for some days
You truly need to have the want and the will to quit. I smoked for over 25 years and haven-t smoked for the last year and a 1/2. I tried everything, hypnosis, patches, acupuncture,… gum. I tried the Commit Lozenges and it worked for me. It took away the physical side effects of quitting which always defeated me in the past when trying to quit. If you can make it through 2 weeks, you can do it. Good Luck to you both, try thinking about the money you-ll save, put those monies aside and go on a nice vacation at the end of a year. Reward yourselves!!
I wuit cold turkey. I woke up one morning after drinking and smoking nearly a pack and said no more, I have to quit. My fiance on the other hand has been trying to quit for two years now. My best advice is to just stop. You will try to make excuses to try to smike but don-t give in to temptation. Just stop doing it.
My best friend used a pill called Chantix. It takes a few days but it does work. Also, change your daily routine so that you dont have a set time to smoke. Also, if you are driving, pull over and get out of your car, smoke then get back in whenever you have the urge to smoke. Bet you don-t want to stop a lot just to kill the urge.
I have quit smoking for almost 1yr now, it would be of some help in quitting smoking if you were to find a hobby or an interest that you both can do together. or another thing you can do is look on the web site for lung cancer and other related cancers that smoking causes....good luck
I helped by husband quite smoking,by putting peppermint in his pocket, and when he got the urge to smoke he-d call me and I-d tell him that I love him, and that he could do this.Another way is and old family remedy.Keep a dried clove in your mouth, suck on it for a couple of hours, and then toss it out and put a new one in,How does this work? the clove neutralizes the taste of nictione in your mouth(accoording to the experts)is the one reason always smokers want to reach for another one.Good Luck to you both.

When I quit, I took up jogging. It helped take my mind off of it and it also reminds you how much harder it would be if you still smoked. I also had to quit drinking for a few months, because every time I had a drink I lost all my willpower and smoked a cig!!! I can-t even count the times I -smoked one last cig- !! Each time I quit, I lasted a little longer but I just kept trying. It took me about a year to quit completely! But now its been 5 years! And I never even crave a cig. The smell actually makes me sick! Good luck! You will never regret quitting!
okay put a rubber band around ur wrist. when EVER u think bout a cig. u pull it and snap it hard . and keep doin it every time. sounds bad but it werks.
Do things that you don-t smoke while doing. When I quit once I stayed in my bedroom a lot and read. I never smoked in my bedroom and I don-t smoke when reading a book. Also I don-t smoke while driving or taking a shower. I have quit several times and am still trying. It is so hard to do though since I live with my bf who smokes. Whenever he quits I quit too but then he starts again so I do too.
WWW. philipmorrisusa.com
Have you tried gum and a punching bag. When you want to smoke chew gum. If the craving for a cigarette is still consuming you, keep punching the punching bag until the craving is gone.
If all else fails you can always resort to shock value. That-s how my dad quit. My mom was 1 month pregnant with me when my dad quit smoking. Someone told him that if a pregnant women inhales cigarette smoke the baby-s chance of being retarded and disfigured rose dramatically along with health problems. He quit on the spot.

Anyone out there quit smoking after smoking for several years (not an occasional smoker)? -

If so, what was it like for you? Do you remember the first few days being really bad? Withdrawal symptoms- Improvements? Fill me in:)
It was a nightmare. Horrible cravings, unable to function. And I-d already cut down a lot and then switched to nicotine lozenges -- I would never have been able to do it if I-d still been smoking 1-1/2 packs a day, I-d done it cold turkey before and at four months in I still didn-t feel normal and went right back to it when I was under stress at work.

Symptoms reach a peak at 3-5 days, then start to fall off. After that, the rate of improvement reminds me of a graph of y = 1/x -- rapid at first, then decreasing gradually and seemingly asymptotic. At maybe a month in the cravings had diminished to the point where I knew I-d make it. I-m at about 2 months in now and still have some bad moments, though most of the time I feel OK and I don-t break down even though I have cigarettes in the house. The cravings will never entirely go away, because you were always high on nicotine and now you aren-t, and you will always react automatically to the sense of stress by thinking -I need a cigarette.-

Anyway, YYMV. Withdrawal is relatively mild and brief for some people and literally impossible for others. It depends on how much you-ve smoked, how long, and what genes you have and you won-t really know until you try it. Then, if you can do it cold turkey, great. (Don-t make the mistake of thinking you can cheat just once -- you can-t, you-ll be right back before you started and will lose all the work you-ve put into it.) Otherwise I recommend Chantix -- I used it along the way, though it didn-t actually get me entirely off it, just helped me cut down on the nicotine until the withdrwal symptoms were manageable. For most people, it-s the most effective drug out there (some can-t tolerate it).

What I can say is that if I can do it, anyone can, because I was maxed out on every scale of addiction, the sort of person who would have smoked through a tracheotomy. The worst scenario is that you-ll have to experiment with the different approaches and drugs and that it will take a number of tries and/or several years to succeed.
I just quit smoking about 2 weeks ago, after being a smoker for 14 years. I smoked anywhere from 2 packs a day, to a half a pack a day. The only real problem I-ve had is breaking habits, such as stepping outside of my office every few hours for a smoke break, having a cigarette with my coffee in the morning, smoking a cigarette after a meal, or smoking when I have drinks. After fighting off those temptations, it hasn-t been too bad. The main thing to remember is not to cave in and light up.
I smoked for more than thirty years, and at the end I was smoking 60 cigarettes a day.
Giving up smoking was the hardest thing I ever did. I always say that giving up heroin couldn-t be worse. I didn-t have anything else in my head except smoking for at least a month. I must say though that once I had been a week without smoking I was even more determined to stop. There wasn-t any point in going through all that agony, just to start again.
Keep at it, it does get better even if it seems to take forever before you notice any benefits.
I smoked for over twenty years, was up to three packs a day and enjoyed every single cigarette! But about twenty-five years ago I decided to quit and I haven-t had one since. I didn-t find stopping all that difficult, but I did gain weight, so watch out for that. I didn-t use any patches or pills or acupuncture, I think the key is to have decided deep down that this is really what you want to do. Good luck!

I want to quit smoking but Im afraid of gaining alot of weight-any suggestions? -

The health benefits of smoking cessation (quitting) are immediate and substantial. Almost immediately, a person-s circulation begins to improve and the level of carbon monoxide in the blood begins to decline. (Carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas found in cigarette smoke, reduces the blood-s ability to carry oxygen.) A person-s pulse rate and blood pressure, which may be abnormally high while smoking, begin to return to normal. Within a few days of quitting, a person-s sense of taste and smell return, and breathing becomes increasingly easier.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

There are many nicotine substitutes that can help you through this, too.

Shari,

I-m on my 14th day smoke free. I have smoked for 20 years and have tried the patch before (with it I gained 20 pounds in 2 months). This time I-m using Nicorette FRESH MINT gum. It has made all the difference!! I have not gained 1 pound. Obviously the patch didn-t satisfy the oral addiction for me the way the gum has. I also work out 3 times a week and drink alot of water. I-m not saying it has always been a total breeze, but it hasn-t been all that bad either. Good luck to you!
Don-t worry about that!
Buy yourself a iPod and get some of you favorite music for starters...then get yourself walking and running with it! Have fun!!!
That is correct. Smoking does suppress the appetite,so there is a possibility, that you may gain weight. Try snacking on your favorite fruits and veggies, when you get that urge. Drink a glass of water with them. The fullness will break the smoking urge. (Good Luck)
get the patch is good. Also do you like Twizzlers? I like Strawberry, low fat, I have found that Smoking is a hand mouth fetish. Twizzlers allow me to have my hands and mouth both busy as before. The brain can be fooled. MY DAD quit after 30 years, he twisted napkins.
Another thing, brush your teeth every 30 mins. that is a great feeling to have. Also suck in allot of fresh air and the lungs will jump with joy. Some get a slight high with more air, like joggers. Good luck, GB and hang tight.
Hey, you know what? I packed on a full 100 pounds after quitting.... I still smoke cigarettes; that was meth, actually.
If you want to drop that addiction, then you need to do whatever it takes, and be proud. Stick with eating right - get yourself some good exercise, and you shouldn-t put on much at all, unless it-s muscle. Is it the hand-to-mouth habit that you-re worried about? Try carrot sticks - other healthy finger foods.
Good luck :-)
When you want to snack, snack on something healthy like an apple. When you would take your usual smoke breaks at work go for a short walk. And take a walk through the park every night until you-re done with you quitting.
My doctor told me that gaining 10 lbs and not smoking is better than weighing 10 lbs less and smoking. I wouldn-t worry about it... I didn-t. And if you are concerned... try exercising to burn off the extra calories you are eating.
You might gain some (and that is normal) just get outside more and do more physical activities (I-m sure you can think of some - wink).
Good Luck!
what else are you addicted to. I don-t want to sound mean but by the looks of your 360 profile, you could put a few pounds on, don-t worry about weight gain, worry about your 12 steps, I am recovering meth addict, is why I ask, again sorry if I sound mean. You are a beautiful woman, I am sure inside and out, take care of yourself.
I think you-d still be beautiful.
If you have to havesomething in your mouth, use chewing gum or sugar free mints.
i quit 8 years ago, i have lots of celery and carrot sticks in the fridge, if there in there and cut already then they will be there and convenient, but NO dips or dressings, this is the fatty part.
get the patch
Walk, run, drink water, buy some gum and chew it, chew a straw, If you go cold turkey, its gonna take a lot of will power, but that doesn-t mean you have to eat. Most people gain weight because they need to satisfy the urge to put stuff in their mouth. Fight that urge and you will be fine, good luck, i am a recent quiter, and I feel a lot better!! I also gained weight, but that is because I started to work out every time I got the urge to burn one...GOOD LUCK!!!
should be no promblem, u wont gain weight babe
GREAT!
i quit smoking 6 months ago after 8 yrs, and i lost weight by using the patch(the name brand patches are somewhat expensive but the generic brand works just as well and its like $10 cheaper) for one and i kept myself busy so i didnt think about having a smoke in my hand, i redid the entire upstairs of my house, from moving around furniture to changing the paint color of all three rooms up there, and after so many days with out a cigarette your energy level increases so you will want to do more. dont worry about the weight and good luck quitting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah... first off, you know you want to quit smoking... so, don-t not do it because you are afraid of gaining weight. do it because you realize that you want to do it, and then let nothing stop you. second, now focus on not eating any more than you normally would. if you feel the need to, for some reaon, chew gum... lots of gum---don-t bother with the pouch, it-s a waste of time and money, and it-s kinda weak too. just stop it. and be strong, it doesn-t take that long, the cravings will go away... just don-t be a wuss and give in when you know that you really don-t want to
you have to drink oregano water. but you have to dilute it with water. it will high up your metabolism, take the stress, and so on.

Please take your doctors- advise first.
Many of my friend who quit said they had lots of sugarfree gum and candy on call at all times. It does help and its a hard habit to break! Goodluck
Eat all you want and then have lots and lots of sex. The exercise will keep the weight off.
chew gum, sugar free gum. and if you want dip with carrot or celeary sticks get fat free dip or just eat them plain.
Well whats worse, putting on a few pounds or drowning in your own body fluid. Sounds nasty I know but then again it is. I quit after watch my grandfather die slowly of emphysema. I wish I had him back with a some extra weight.
Let-s put it like this. Quitting smoking, particularly if you smoke a lot, changes your metabolism. If you manage to do lots of physical exercise at the same time, you won-t put on a single pound.

Whats the best way for a fifteen year old to quit smoking? -

without leting my mom and dad know
Just quit right now. Never light another one. Trust me, if I-d known then what I know now I sure would have quit before my health declined due to smoking. You will be doing yourself and your family a HUGE favor by quitting now before you have smoked long enough to get lung damage.

The longer you smoke - the HARDER it is to quit.
It will not be easy, tobacco is probably the most addictive substance in common use in the U.S. If tobacco was discovered right now, it would never get approval by the FDA for common use. But you are dealing with a huge industry, from farmers right up through retailers. It is a high profit item. I would imagine your youth will help you, it will be a physical strain. Cold turkey is the fastest way. Good Luck My congratulations for starting.
I know many who have had to quit smoking, -cold turkey.- It worked for them because they were determined to make it work. Good luck!!!!
Find a hypnotist in your area (Check out the National Guild of Hypnotists on Google) .
Call them or drop by and see if you can cut a deal where you can wash their car or clean their office, you get the idea, to get a couple of sessions.
The greatest factor in quitting is the desire to change.
check out the web for Smoking Cessation MP3-s. There out there. Play them over and over again. Like learning anything repetition is the key.
Visualize how cool you will feel and look when you discover that you took control of a habit that millions have not.
Cool is the word!
You will breathe better, sleep better and a piece of toast will taste like your in heaven. If you believe in prayer use it.
Here is a practical step:

Buy a fresh pack of a different brand every day.
This brings to the conscious mind the fact that your spending a fortune!
Next: decide how many cigarettes you smoke during the day.
Set the times: example, 9;00, 10:00, 11:00 ( I do not know your smoking habit)
Then if that totals 15 take the remainder of cigarettes and destroy them.
Carry a bottle of water with you at all times.

NO CANDY OR GUM! That is just switching the dependency to another object.

At the times appointed:
Take a sip of water (this is associating a good habit with your desire) and ask yourself -Do I really want a cigarette?-

If the answer is yes, light up without guilt and enjoy it!
If the answer is no you have to wait until the next time slot.
You cannot lend or borrow cigarettes.
You will be astounded at how well this works!

Note;
If you were carrying a tray of 50 glasses and dropped one, what would you do?
Keep going is the correct answer!
Same here!
If you mess up don-t beat yourself up about it just keep going!

Any cigarettes left at the end of the day must be destroyed!

Brush your teeth as soon as you eat!
Particles of food left in the mouth trigger a bell when your tongue touches them. Food=cigarette!!
Stay await from coffee, and drinks like Pepsi, Coke.
Carry a small bottle of a cinnamon flavored mouthwash.
If between times you get a really bad urge rinse your mouth with it.
It helps.
Hope I could be of some assistance.
I took control of the habit on March 27/84 at 7:30 PM on a Wednesday night. I had smoked for 32 years and had my lung collapse (1980) and still didn-t take control.
They told me I had emphysema and I still didn-t take control.
Having a true desire really makes a huge difference.

You can do it!
Get lung cancer.
try chewing gum and hard candy like jolly ranchers! or whenever you have the urge to light up, do something else with your hands like drawing, chatting online, playing an instrument. a lot of times smoking isn-t just the nicotine addiction, it-s the physical motions of lighting up! keep your hands and mouth busy ( in a healthy and productive way :)) and that should help. hang in there....quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your body!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You-re 15! Stop getting your buddies to buy them for you. Problem solved.
Get a new hobbie to distract yourself, and go cold turkey.
You will be moody in the first two days, but once your system is cleared, you will be fine. Use the new hobbie as a way to distract yourself and focus your thoughts on something else. It is the best and cheapest way to quit.
When I was fifteen and trying to stop smoking there was a class held at my school for it. They told us if we really wanted to stop we could do it by sucking on hot candy like fire balls and any cinnamon candy. It helps because if you take a drag after you eat hot candy it taste really bad so you just put out the cigarette. Also little coffee straws help by having something to put in your mouth and something to with your hands.

I have tried for along time. I actualy quit for 4 yrs when I had my daughter. But when I went back to work I started again.
I need some tips please help.... Also I cannot afford the patch, as my insurance won-t cover it . I also have M.S. so please keep that in mind.
Thanks for any tips
1. pick a date to quit
2. get rid of all matches, lighters, ashtrays
3. get a mentor someone that can talk you through the first few days.
4. buy lots of gum, hard candy
5. do you have a hobby that you like to do that could keep your hands busy ?
6. go to the American cancer society web site they also have a ton of suggestions for how to quit I wish you the best in quitting good luck but most of all keep your chin up you can do this
Put yourself down and be like I am better than this... did u know that smoking doesnt only kill u, but people around u do it for ur daughter
i have been struggling to quit seems like all my life. As you i did quit during my 3 pregnancies, which i guess made it easy. Last summer i quit cold turkey and i was fine ,except for the fact that i constantly was thinking about it. i don-t like to use patches or anything of that matter but i do believe that some people ,like my husband,do need that extra help. Well, i did start again and i still want to quit and it is so hard, I guess for me is will power that does it and i am in the process again on getting some somehow. If i tell myself I-m doing it for myself ,it doesn-t work, but if i tell myself I-m doing it for my family and to save money,it seems to work better. I really hope you find something that works for you. I know we all wish we had a magic wand to makes us stop, Till then i guess all i have left is free will. The nicotine gum did work for my husband. he got a non brand which was cheaper.
Try www.smokingstopshere.com
I smoked for over 45 years and tried everything and anything. Hypnosis, patches, prescriptions you name it I tried it then heard about Commit lozenges. At first I thought they were the nastiest thing I ever put in my mouth but after a day or so they got better and the smokes started tasting nasty. They cost about as much as a carton and like cigaretts the price varies greatly I-ve found from $32 to $47 a box of 72. I have no idea how they would affect your MS but if the nicotine in cigs don-t effect you I don-t see how they would harm you but check with your druggist. Good luck
Man I wish I knew too!!!Tell me when you know!!!One way my doctor said (didnt work for me but hey everyones different)is take out like 10 cigarettes to start and tha is your allowance for the day. Then when you feel confident move down to 8 or 9 then just keep doing this until youre down to like 1 or 2, she said even if you can-t give up these 2 its a whole hell of a lot better than a whole pack or whatever ya know?
Just stop like you did before. If you can afford cigarettes you can afford the patch.Ask your doctor to prescribe an anti anxiety drug (zoloft) this helps with the cravings. You can do it because you already did once. You quit before you say, for your daughter..Do it again for her.Kids hate it when their moms die from cancer. My sister-s kids sure didn-t like it when she died at 36yrs old. They were even angry at her.

I earned 10 kilograms after i quit smoking, how do i loose them now? -

I didnt believe i would get fat, i never had such problems ever. I never kept a diet in my life! Now i must loose 10 kilograms and i have absolutely no idea how. I have to do that untill i go to the sea side (i-d feel awfull to be in a bathing suite the way i look now) wich is in 2 weeks. Anybody can help me?
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
Hi,

I-ve tried so many different diets in the last 10 years that I can say now, they don-t work!
A few months ago, I came across a great product for weight loss and like many others I was skeptical about it. But I really wanted to lose weight and I tried it. The results were excellent and I lost 20 pounds in 2 months. I felt fantastic and I dropped another 5 pounds safely. That-s why I recommend you check this product at http://www.get2itnow.info where they have a free trial and you only pay 6.95$ shipping and handling.
Good luck!
well congratulations on quitting. well done.
as for losing the weight you gained, it isn-t going to happen in such a short time. It takes three times as long to lose excess weight as it did to gain it. So, buy a swimsuit that covers better. To lose the weight, there is only one way, cut your calories, exercise daily. Keep caloric intake to 1200 calories a day and drink 2 liters of water a day, if you do that, you will loose ten kilos a month.
Watch what you eat, exercise, lose the muchies, I-ve been there too!

How do i quit smoking ? -

Hi i am smoking from the last 14 years - would like to stop smokeing ?
Hi,
If you realy wants to quit smoking then you should know some facts.

This is for your information pl. that Cigarette smoking kills nearly about 420,000 people a year, making it more lethal than AIDS, accidents, homicides, suicides, drug overdoses, and fire.

The main risks of smoking are

1. Heart disease
2. Cancer
3. Dementia and neurologic diseases
4. Lung disease
5. Female infertility and pregnancy
6. Male sexuality and reproduction
7. Behavioural and Social Problems
8. Effects on bones and joints

The methods to quit smoking are

At this time the most effective methods for quitting is a combination of nicotine replacement products and the antidepressant drug bupropion bolstered by counselling.

1. Nicotine replacement

Nicotine replacement products provide low doses of nicotine that do not contain the contaminants found in smoke. They are proving to be twice as helpful as other standard quitting methods. Replacement products include nicotine patches, gums, nasal sprays, and inhalers. Side effects of any nicotine replacement product may include headaches, nausea, and other gastrointestinal problems. People often experience sleeplessness in the first few days, particularly with the patch, but the insomnia usually passes. Patients using very high doses are more likely to experience symptoms, and reducing the dose can prevent them. Certain individuals like people with heart disease, pregnant women, small children may need to avoid nicotine replacement products.

Nicotine patches: Nicotine patches, or transdermal nicotine, can be an effective way to quit smoking. The quit rate for patch users is around 20% after six months. Nicotine patches are available over the counter, but it is best to consult a doctor before using them, particularly people with any medical problems.

Nicotine gum: Nicotine gum (Nicorette), available over the counter, has also been effective for a number of people. Some prefer it to the patch because they can control the nicotine dosage and chewing satisfies the oral urge. Long-term dependence may be a problem with this method.

Nicotine inhaler: The nicotine inhaler resembles a plastic cigarette holder. It comes with a number of nicotine cartridges which are inserted into the inhaler. It has some specific advantages over other slower nicotine replacement products:

Nicotine nasal spray: The nasal spray satisfies immediate cravings by providing doses of nicotine rapidly, and thus may play a useful role in conjunction with slower acting nicotine replacement therapies.

Nicotine tablet: A nicotine tablet that is held under the tongue is also very useful.

2. Alternative and ther Methods for Quitting

Scheduled reduction: One study showed that people who used a systematic withdrawal schedule were twice as likely to quit as those who went cold turkey. The procedure involves the following steps:

Divide the number of minutes per day awake by the number of daily cigarettes; the result is the minute-long wait between smokes.

Set up a schedule with time intervals based on this result and using a timer, smoke only at those intervals; if the -cigarette appointment- is missed by more than five minutes, the smoker must skip that cigarette.

The following week, one-third fewer cigarettes are used and the smoking time is recalculated based on the lower number.

During the third week the count is again reduced by a third, and the smoker quits in the fourth week.
Change daily habits:

Change the daily schedule as much as possible. Eat at different times or eat many small meals instead of three large ones, sit in a different chair, rearrange the furniture.

Find other ways to close a meal. Play a tape or CD, eat a piece of fruit, get up and make a phone call, or take a walk (a good distraction that burns calories as well).

Substitute oral habits (eat celery, chew sugarless gum, suck on a cinnamon stick.) Go to public places and restaurants where smoking is prohibited or restricted.

Set short-term quitting goals and reward yourself when they are met, or every day put the money normally spent on cigarettes in a jar and buy something pleasurable at the end of a predetermined period of time.

Find activities that focus the hands and mind but are not taxing or fattening: computer games, solitaire, knitting, sewing, whittling, crossword puzzles.

Avoid heavy drinking of alcohol, caffeine, or other stimulants or mood altering substances.

Enjoy Life
I became a chain non-smoker.When I got the urge sometimes I would put off lighting one up for a few minutes. Then I found the urge would pass for a half hour and I avoided smoking one.I counted that as one not smoked. At the end of the day sometimes I counted more than a pack I didn-t smoke. After several weeks of this I was hardly lighting up at all, then I reached the point that I haven-t smoked one in several years.I never quit,I just haven-t had one in 5 years and counting. Good luck,I hope you live to look back on this like I can.
Enroll in a smoking cessation programme (hospitals, health departments, community centres and worksites frequently offer programmes)
Ask your health care provider for advice, including whether prescription medications are safe and appropriate for you
Find out about nicotine patches, gum and sprays
Try hypnosis—it works for some people
Avoid smoke-filled settings and situations in which you are most likely to smoke
Exercise to relieve urge to smoke
think smoking is injurious to health everybody is aware of. The best tip is do meditation it really helps. The most important is unless n until u r not having a strong will power u cannot quit and u cannot resist urself from smoking. I-ll give u my husband-s example he use to smoke at least thrice a day everybody use to tell him a lot but he never stopped, one fine day when my child grew up and he saw one advertise of smoking is injurious for health on TV and told him -look pop how injurious it is when I’ll be of ur age I’ll never smoke . and believe me that was the instance which hit his mind and the very next moment he quit smoking. I don’t know when something will click to ur mind but my genuine advice to u is try meditation it will really help u to quit smoking. Keep trying n I’m sure one day definitely u-ll succeed. Above all strong will power is must.Good Luck
Easier said than done, why don-t you just stop smoking? Every time you need a drag pretend you-ve just had one. Don-t dwell on smoking. Drink plenty of water. Remind yourself of the numerous advantages in giving up the dreaded weed. The first day of not smoking is hell. The nicotine craving will be unbearable so bear it like a man and the rest will come easily. Good luck.
Make yourself allergetic to smoke fog.
A Strong Will.thats all u need.
Strat CHEWING gums.
Here are 10 techniques that will help you quit the habit.
Remember - you can do it!

1. Deep Breathing Perhaps The Single Most Powerful And Important Technique: Every time you want a cigarette, do the following. Do it three times.

Inhale the deepest lung-full of air you can, and then, very slowly, exhale. Purse your lips so that the air must come out slowly. As you exhale, close your eyes, and let your chin gradually sink over onto your chest. Visualize all the tension leaving your body, slowly draining out of your fingers and toes, just flowing on out.

This is a variation of a yoga technique and is very relaxing. If you practice this, you-ll be able to use it for any future stressful situation you find yourself in. And it will be your greatest weapon during the strong cravings sure to assault you over the first few days.

2. Taking In Fluids:
The first few days, drink LOTS of water and fluids to help flush out the nicotine and other poisons from your body.

Remember that the urge to smoke only lasts a few minutes, and will then pass. The urges gradually become farther and farther apart as the days go by.

3. Stay Away From Alcohol, Sugar And Coffee
Do your very best to stay away from alcohol, sugar and coffee the first week or longer, as these tend to stimulate the desire for a cigarette. Avoid fatty foods, as your metabolism will slow down a bit without the nicotine, and you may gain weight even if you eat the same amount as before quitting. So discipline about diet is extra important now. No one ever said acquiring new habits would be easy!

Nibble on low calorie foods like celery, apples and carrots. Chew gum or suck on cinnamon sticks.

Stretch out your meals; eat slowly and wait a bit between bites.

4.Taking An Oral Substitute
In one study, about 25% of quitters found that an oral substitute was invaluable. Another 25% didn-t like the idea at all - they wanted a clean break with cigarettes. The rest weren-t certain.

One can use cinnamon sticks, chewing gum or artificial cigarettes as a substitute. You will mostly find that after the first week of being a non smoker, you wouldn’t even need these.

5. Get Exercising
Go to a gym, sit in the steam, exercise. Change your normal routine – take time to walk or even jog around the block or in the local park.

6.Pamper Yourself
Go ahead and join a yoga class or maybe reiki – they-re great! Get a one hour massage, take a long bath - pamper yourself. Get yourself involved in a hobby.

7. Ask For Support
Ask for support from co-workers, friends and family members. Ask for their tolerance. Let them know you-re quitting, and that you might be edgy or grumpy for a few days. If you don-t ask for support, you certainly won-t get any. If you do, you-ll be surprised how much it can help. Take a chance - try it and see!

Ask friends and family members not to smoke in your presence. Don-t be afraid to ask. This is more important than you may realize.

8. Destroy All Your Cigarettes
On your quit day, hide all ashtrays and destroy all your cigarettes, preferably with water, so no part of them is smokeable.

9. Write It Down
Write down ten good things about being a nonsmoker - and then write out ten bad things about smoking. Do it. It really helps.

10. Don’t Pretend
Don-t pretend smoking wasn-t enjoyable – it was. This is like losing a good friend – and it-s okay to grieve the loss. Feel that grief, don-t worry, it-s okay. Feel, and you heal. Stay with it - you can do it!

Whats the longest its taken you to quit smoking on Wellbutrin? -

I know your supposed to stop when you up the dose, but that was a week ago for me and I-ve only dropped off a little bit. Has it taken anyone around a month or two, even longer?
Good Morning Kat,
firstly let me congratulate you on your decision to quit; however, whether on prescription medicine or OTC concoctions, it-s not the medicine or whatever else you decide to use to help you quit. It-s YOU! All of these things are merely a -help tool- but none of them, and I repeat, NONE of them will -do the trick- unless you are truly and absolutely ready to quit. I know, this is not the answer you expected nor wanted. But it-s the only way to stopping this nasty habbit. I have been a smoker for over 25 years and have tried quitting during different stages in my life. I am a cancer survivor and even then did I not manage to prevail :( For my father, who-s smoked for over 50 years (also a cancer patient) it took a lung disease (asbestosis) to finally lay down his smoking habbit. He quit overnight or -cold turkey- so to speak and I admire his strength and complete self contol, because that is what it takes to quit permanently. I am disabled after two very bad accidents, mostly bedridden now, and yet, I am still smoking, just can-t extinct that last cigarette :( What that means for you? It means that you have to be stronger willed and believe in yourself that you can, if fact, give it up. All these methods on the market are only tools, and in most instances sadly hoaks. There are many who believe in different methods but no matter which one of these you chose, the will to quit has to come from within you! Only you can make it work! You willpower is what can get you out of this devilish circle of voluntarily inhaling toxic fumes on a daily basis. The one thing we all do know for certain is that smoking is bad for you, even kills you. What a said truth, but nonetheless the truth!
I wish you the best of luck in beating this deadly addiction and hope that you succeed! And to all others whom read this, please, do yourself a favour, do whatever it takes but please put those nasty things down. Let-s be honest with ourselves, what we, the smokers, are doing is committing suicide. One day at a time, one cigarette at a time. I
I do advise you to join a self help group (you can find many of them online). All you really need is a strong will, however hard to achieve, yet your own will is the tool to quit forever! May God Bless you and help you overcome this and grant you a prosperous life!
Sincerely, MsB. :)

Please help if you have any good ways. Did you kick the habit? Did you gain weight?
For some of us weight gain is an unfortunate side effect of quitting smoking. Even if you do gain weight it will only be a few pounds at the very most. While weight gain is unfortunate it is by no means inevitable.

You have already decided to improve your health by quitting smoking so why not make it a complete health make over.

By making some healthier eating choices and performing 30 minutes of aerobic activity (biking, jogging etc) every day you will keep those extra pounds at bay. Trust me, it is easier to prevent weight gain than it is to actually lose weight.

Keeping the weight off is easy if you decide to keep your healthy lifestyle after you have quit smoking.

Visit our site to join our inspirational 12 day e-course. You can also download our free book -36 Powerful Superfoods- to help fight weight gain and start mending damage caused by smoking.

Good Luck and Good Quitting
I have just recently quit - 9 weeks and counting! Let me tell you, it-s a fantastic feeling!
I quit using a pill called Chantix. You can get a prescription from your primary care physician. The prescription is a bit expensive to pay all in one shot, but you have to figure, if it actually helps you quit, you-re really saving in the long run, because you won-t be buying cartons/packs of smokes anymore!
Chantix suggests that you set a -quit date- for yourself. Then, you start taking the pill and you can continue smoking for the first week, but at the end of 7 days (your -quit date-), you should stop smoking. The best thing about this medication was that they also provided you with 24/7 on-line and phone support. Each day they sent you an email to try to help you get through it. They even recommend setting up nightly -check-ins- to see how you did that day. If you messed up and smoked, it-s alright, they-ll get you back on track.
I will admit, I did eat a bit after quitting and did gain a couple of pounds. However, I-ve also been on a general -health kick- so continuing my work-out regime has definitely helped me get rid of those extra couple of pounds.
Personally, I wouldn-t recommend attempting to quit -cold-turkey-... When I tried that a) it didn-t work for very long, and b) I gained much more weight than I did with the medication.
I hope this information helps you, and I wish you luck in your quit!!
You can do it! :-)
I quit many years ago. Nicotine raises your metabolism so you will definitely be prone to gaining a couple of pounds. On top of that, many people supplement the oral fixation by eating. Set yourself up with healthy snacks of fruits and vegetables and do some type of exercise. Even if you gain a few pounds it is the lesser of the two evils. Good Luck!
The problem is that smoking makes you less hungry, so when you stop your hunger goes up - and also because some people find that they just need something else to do with their hands!

A really great way i-ve found to combat the hunger is to eat small amounts every three hours - its actually a great diet strategy, because it keeps the sugar in your blood pretty stable, and helps you from stopping binge eating because you never really get that huge food craving!
Make sure that you have LOTS of healthy snacks around, because it is likely that you will eat because youre just trying not to smoke. Or find something to do with your hands - my aunty took up knitting when she quit!
Which is the lesser of the 2 evil?
Weight gain usually happen because you regain more of your sense of smell and taste. Food starts to taste better and generally you eat more.

You can work off the weight gained but there-s no way your smoking -gains-. You are better off not smoking.

I quit cold turkey 12 years ago after 13 years of 30 sticks a day.
However not one method is going to work for everyone and there are plenty of quit smoking help that you can find online today.
Look around and find out that you feel is suitable for you.

Whatever it is, don-t give up! You can do it!
You know that smoking suppresses appetite right? and that usually leads to weight gain by most people quitting on smoking, because their appetite is increased.

The thing you need to do is replace that with something that can suppress your appetite. You need to get off on smoking, its really bad. Try drinking mild coffee when you get the urge to smoke. Or take some nicotine gum.
Take a look at this site

I am also trying to quit and this site is great. It not only helps you to quit, it helps you see smoking in a whole new light, and it also aids you in not gaining weight in the process!
(wish I had found it sooner!)
I wish you the best of luck!

thats an old wives tale. you dont gain weight if you quit smoking. im an on and off smoker. i quit with 0 problem. you can too. theres nothing to it. all the -addiction- bs is all psychological. exaggerated by the media so they can make money selling you the nicotine patches and all kinds of drugs.

you dont need none of that trash if ur serious that you wanna quit then quit. you wont gain any weight, just dont eat a lotta fats, exercise and ur good. stop monitoring ur appearance and weight youll just play tricks with ya own eyes on ya body image, ya dig? so take it easy homegirl. now get to it -smacks ya booty-
ummm quitting smoking doesn-t cause weight gain. Eating more does though and since smoking stops hunger i can see how you relate it. But your the only one that puts food in your mouth, so control yourself
Chew sugar free gum. People gain weight because they have an oral fixation and replace the cigarettes with food.
instead of smoking go for a walk!

Two of the top quit smoking aids are NicRX and Smoke Deter? -

Does anyone have a testimony on either of these products?
I don-t trust any quit smoking method that deals only with physical nicotine addiction. Drugs especially because they are potentially dangerous also. I personally wouldn-t go near the stuff, especially when there are so many other ways of quitting.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

Quitting smoking does not require any patches, gums, herbs or drugs. These methods are expensive, time consuming, potentially harmful and simply do not work. All that is required is a bit of motivation, self belief and determination.

What are the best methods to quit smoking? -

my fiancee really wants to quit smoking for me and wants me to write up a plan on ho he can do it, but i-ve never smoked so i don-t know how to quit it! Help!
TELL him to pretend that the cigarette is a penis when he-s sucking on it, then he-ll get grossed out and quit because smoking is gay.
Freezer pops, like the ones from when you were little. You-d be surprised, but they really help kick the habit. it keeps your hands and mouth busy so you don-t feel like you need a cigarette. and they-re addicting all by themselves... so you-ll probably end up buying about a box a week. But it-s still cheaper than cigarettes! lol :)

Another trick, for in the car, is coffee straws. hold one between your fingers, chew on it, stick it in your mouth like a cigarette. Same goes for toothpicks. Smoking is a habit, more than an addiction. for me, the nicotine addiction isn-t as difficult to get over as the actual habit. Especially when I-m driving.

Another thing you might want to consider (if he wants to taper off from them) are those mechanical cigarettes they have out now. they look odd, but taste alot like a cigarette (though personally i think they taste like a mild cigar). theyre just alot better for you... if i remember correctly it-s just straight nicotine, without all those fun cancer causing chemicals.

I hope this helps!!
Hi Rose

I have found by myself and talking to others that the first physical addiction is the easiest part to get over actually. Its usually gone in a few days, BUT whats difficult is to break the HABIT and phycological addiction that can last for even years!

I have found one method that uses NLP and ANCHORING to be succesfull. It is straightforward and simple but requires some work, but it is FREE. It works by making you so tired of smoking you will never want to see a cigarette again!

Check out the link:

I quit smoking two years ago, but now? -

I-ve started to go out again, and I would like a cigarette when I drink. I had one the other night, and I know that I can keep it to only having one when I drink. I had gone down to only smoking when I drank several years ago, never needed it on a daily basis. I just feel bad that I went so long without one, only to have one the other night. So, now does it matter if I have a couple of cigarettes once a week, or should I try to stop altogether?
stop all together,NOW
Not only lung cancer, but head and neck cancers are on the rise.
I work in a hospital, and you would never believe it, if someone told you, how horrible cancer from smoking is.Nightmare that never goes away.Trust me,if you ever had a cold and felt horrible, cancer is a thousand times worse.
dude Stop!!!
try sucking on a piece of ice or candy, that-s what my sister does, and she has gone without 1 in like 3 weeks
There is no such thing as a social smoker, before you know it you will be back to a pack a day,
best to leave them alone.

How can I help my dad quit smoking for ever? -

He is getting to the point where he smokes on pack per day. There are 20 cigarettes inn the pack.. Please help!! It-s affecting his health!!
You tell him that he-ll die if he doesn-t quit.
He may blow that off like my parents.
Then you say -If it doesn-t kill you, it-s gonna kill me!-
Because of second hand smoke.
Then you lay all sorts of guilt on him at random times.
Like if he-s coughing you pass by and say -That wouldn-t happen if you quit.-
Or if he-s sick and has to cancel on some big game or something you tell him: -People who smoke get sick a lot more then people who don-t.-
Also mention about it wastes tons and tona of money, that could buy him something awesome or help with college tution or something important.
Also, you have to remember that tobacco is THE MOST hardest addictive substance to quit.
So be patient and suggest using a pill or patch or gum or something.
Anyways, good luck!
I want to encourage you that you can do it. It will be one of the toughest things you have ever done. You first have to have the positive outlook and the determination to want to quit.
Second thing is getting all the right information on what is going to happen to your body and your mind once you give up smoking. Your brain will have cravings which will send down the nerve ending to tell your body that you have just got to have another cigarette. Well fight that urge. Those urges and craving will continue for 7 to 90 days and in some smokers it may last up to 6 months. Take you mind elsewhere. Chew on some gum. Get the cigarette gum or patch for slow nicotine to flow into the bloodstream. At least you are not taking that smoke into your lungs.
Third thing is you will have to exercise daily. This is a requirement to not only help you take your mind of of smoking, but you will want to put something into your mouth and eat. It is true you will put on a little weight at first because you not only have to learn not to smoke, but to beat that habit of having something in your hand. You will want to go to the refrigerator and munch. Resist that as much as smoking. It is an addiction and it is very hard to stop. But I encourage you to do it for yourselves and your children and grandchildren. They generally model behavior of those they love. I know that you love your children and your family, but learned behavior , like drinking, cussing, lying, and the list goes on and on, is another reason to quit.
Well first question is does he want to quit? If he doesn-t then it will be harder for him too quit. It took me 32 years before I quit and now I am on oxygen and in the end stage of the disease and I am only 53.
I hope you can help him. If he fails he can try again and again till it works.Just give him lots of support. As a reform smoker I know you need so much support to stick to it.
I hope this will help you. You can email me for more questions or to talk.

Good Luck
Gail G.
Well i think only way you can help him is to tell him how much it worries you. He has to decide to stop can′t make him, so you need to try to give him a good reason to stop. Don′t tell him what he already knows like smoking is bad for you, he knows that i think. And if he wants to stop you could find some great web page online that you can look at together. I think support is very good, i used to smoke so im just telling you what i experience. Don′t attack him, support him, he is not a criminal more like sick. sorry about my english Good luck.
My father use to smoke 3 packs a day. Now 50 years later, he is down to a pack a day, and he-s never had a smoking related illness.
My grandparents are 87 and 83 and have been smoking for over 60 years, with no signs of quitting. They are healthier than most non smokers in their 50-s.
Stop listening to lab rats. They only make people paranoid.
take him to hospital and show him all cancer patients and on oxygen and let him talk to them all. My aunt and friend passed of cancer. Life is not worth the lame *** ciggerette. Tell him he can show you how strong he is and to get a hobbie to REPLACE THE OLD HABBIT.
Well, you can-t force someone to quit. They have to want to and even if they want to, many can-t find it within themselves to quit.
But there are mediciations, chewing gum and the patch to help if he wants to.
Maybe nicotine patches

If you feel that it is not easy for you to quit smoking just call me up i-ll give you good tips.

+91-9414756120 is my cell
Although this is possibly based on obtaining a better health condition for those who smoke, [and not being from India, I have no percentage of the numbers who smoke], I would remind everyone that many cancers are not caused by smoking.
It is a very good thought, but what other environmental conditions are present in India, which are also contributing to many cancers?
Air pollution, water pollution, asbestos, and other hazardous materials, products used and handled without the use of protective equipment, even tainted food products.
There are also questions about what percentage of cancer in your country is truly caused, directly, by smoking.
My husband died of Mesothelioma, a cancer caused by direct exposure to asbestos. He was a non-smoker.
It is scientifically proven that urban area citizens who breath the air and are non-smokers, in many large cities around the world, breath in a large percentage of toxic substances....just by breathing.
The point being, just quitting smoking may help, and certainly doesn-t hurt, but more should be done about other pollution which also causes a larger percentage of cancers.

It isn-t easy to just quit smoking,
to ba able to quit smoking you have to really want to quit for your self,
not someone telling you to quit or even just using products to help quit smoking it won-t work you really have to want to quit and be ready otherwise it really just wont work.
well better still dont start smoking

How do i get my Mom to quit smoking? -

I really don-t want her to die from cancer or get one of those machine things through the throat. She smokes 4-5 a day and I keep telling her to quit but she just ignores me. What would be a good way to make her stop smoking.
Good on you for being worried about your mom. This is a tough situation because at the end of the day it is her choice to wether or not she quits smoking.

All you can do is keep trying to convince her. Smokers are stubborn people (I know because I used to be one of them).

Let her know how much you and the rest of the family love her. Let her know the pain you will all go through if you were to lose her. Putting your mom through a big guilt trip is a hard thing to do but it may be your only option.

If you can, try to guide her to our blog. It has some really great ideas and information. This may help to convince her.

Don-t listen to those who say stop trying. Never stop trying, if you quit then she sure as hell won-t.

Visit our blog for more information and to download our free book.

Good Luck, I hope you get your wish

My mom smokes as well and when I was younger I would always tell her to quit and tell her she was going to die from it and she finally told me one day that it didn-t help. She said that it made her more nervous about it all together and a lot of people smoke more when they are nervous.

You have to let her make that decision. You can sit down with her and express your concerns and tell her that you would worry less about her if she did quit. Let her know that you love and care about her and you want whats best. Tell her you are willing to help through online smoking programs or even community programs. Do some research on those and present them to her and tell her you are willing to support her when she decides to quit.
she must decide for herself to stop smoking. However, if you can convince her, there are wonderful medications and interventions available if you can get her to speak with a doctor. Serotonin uptake medications can help, as well as medications that are also used to help weight loss.

Hope you are successful. My grandfather died from lung cancer, and my uncle smoked for 40 years and only quit when he had to have a lung removed. Smoking increases risk of all kinds of cancer, not just lung cancer.
Not gonna happen. Think about how you reacted when told to do something.

Mom knows it isn-t good for her; but she could do worse. Suggest she try going 3-4 hours without a smoke; if she can do that, she has a good chance of quitting if SHE wants. The smoke -patches-, etc., cost over $100. per month - require 2-3 months. When SHE-s ready (not you), acupuncture by some one who knows how to use the two -TIM-MEE- points and there-s 80% chance to stop smoking. That-s about $100. and only needs ONE visit! Good luck!
My mom was the same way!

but she wanted to quit so truthfully you cant do anything to make her stop unless she actually wants to Quit.

but try showing her all the bad things that smoking is causing.

and then tell her how much better shell be able to breath and such if she does quit.
You don-t. It-s her decision, and hers only. 4-5 a day? That-s not even worth getting emotional over. My dad was a 3 pack a day smoker before cutting it to just a pack a day, and he-s still going strong.
Hide her smokes!!!!

Feel free to have a look.

Ihee0726 is full of crap. Just because you smoke doesn`t mean you`re a lazy person, I`m sure you know that. I`ve worked very physical jobs all my life - worked out at the gym for the last 15 years. The reason I quit, was that I could feel the cigarrettes stealing my breathe. It really does sneak up on you gradually. I started when i was 18 - am now 43, 23 years. I have 2 fairly young kids - want to see them grow up. I tried cold turkey - was fine for about 2 weeks, but it`s like stretching a rubber band. Each day I would get more angry - jittery - the craving got unbearable. I also tried nicotine replacement, which was a joke, as was hypnosis. I finally tried a new drug that Pfizer has out called Chantix. It really works - I haven`t had a cigarrette in 7 months. I have gained 20 pounds, but I am able to run again so that should come off soon. I would recommend Chantix for anyone who wants to quit, it blocks the inhibitors in the brain that take in the nicotine , there`s few side effects. I hope you have it as easy as i have. Go talk to your doctor about it. good luck!!!
try the patch... it gives you a nicotine fix that you crave from cigarettes, there-s also gum that does that too,
just slowly start cutting down on when you smoke,
if you get an urge to have a smoke, snack on something or chew some gum...
I just stopped. Woke up decided I wasnt gonna kill myself anymore and didn-t smoke again.
I-m 27 smoked since I was 14.
Admittedly it has only been 2 months.

I think the answer is really that you have to want to. I tried loads of times and failed because I wasnt really commited. Knew I shouldnt but still wanted too smoke.
You need to find what works for you.

Good luck, it is worth it when you do it! I promise

Oh and putting the money aside that you save helps.
I want to go to India but couldnt really afford it, so I am saving the money I-m not spending on cigs it is amazing how quickly the money totals up!
Best Known Ways to Quit Smoking
By: Jeff Flow

When you realize that your health is in danger because of smoking or that your budget is very much affected by this or you were just struck by the idea of giving up this vice you are very fortunate to know that there are a lot of ways to quit smoking.

The ways to quit smoking are either sudden or slow but sure, they either rely on your own personal determination or on the help of the others. Whatever method you choose you must be very prepared for the difficult period that follows the moment when you last smoked a cigarette. And this is because of the addiction to nicotine that once withdrawn from the organism it causes trouble.

The sudden impulse to give up smoking is known under the name of “cold turkey” and it is the result of a personal choice. Among the gradual ways to quit smoking may be enumerated the nicotine replacement therapy, the individual or group therapy, some modern and non-medical methods such as acupuncture, kabala practices and others but also physical exercises.

Be Determined

The first step towards a successful decision to give up smoking is to find a strong motivation. This must be sought in your own person, inside you. Nobody can convince you that you should quit your vice if you are not really determined that you actually want to do this. And also it depends on you which of the ways to quit smoking best suits you, if you think that you are able to do it on your own or to ask for assistance. If you want to choose the latter variant you have several alternatives.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

It is incorrect to say that you are addicted to smoking because in fact you are addicted to nicotine and to the idea of a routine. The moment you try to provide the required quantity of nicotine to which your body was used while you were a smoker all you have to do in rest is to keep your hands busy and to work on your psyche. This way you’ll certainly quit this vice.

Individual or Group Therapy

Probably the most efficient among all the ways to quit smoking is the individual or group therapy. The reason why it is confirmed to be the surest method is that everything happens in an organizational environment and help is provided by professionals who are instructed for this.

Modern Techniques

Acupuncture, hypnosis, laser therapy are some modern methods that come in the help of those who want to quit smoking. Due to the fact that they are rather modern tools their efficiency for a one hundred percent success has not been completely demonstrated.

Sports

Smokers are usually lazy persons as this vice affect their physical resistance. Practicing all kinds of physical exercises is the best way to reestablish the health of your body but it also reduces the desire to smoke. Exercising should not lack from any process of giving up smoking.

Every smoker should decide which of these ways to quit smoking is best for him. If one of them does not function then he should try another one or in order to get the desired results a combination of these is recommended.
Don-t give up at once. reduce the number of cigarette gradually and when it comes to one or two leave it.
cold turkey, just fight through the cravings. After that first week it will become easier to stay away.
I-ve smoked for 10 years and have started using nicotine replacement patches, this is my 6th day without a cigarette so early days yet...!! Seem to be working fine so far. Give it a try and good luck..!

And how have you done it? I want to quit so bad. I accually quit a few weeks ago, lasted a week and a half :( I just want to be healthy and feel health again. Help! any quitting suggestions?
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
I quit 2 years ago. I knew I needed to quit but it just had to be the correct time, so one morning I woke up and said today is the day. I did it cold turkey. After 3 days I thought I have gone through a miserable 3 days so why would I start again and just have to do another 3 days like that again so I kept going. Not smoking is one of the coolest things I have ever done. Good Luck to you.
I quit smoking cold turkey. I was really sick with a cold at the time, and I just didn-t feel like smoking, since my lungs were all congested anyway. Then I just quit buying cigarettes and resisted the urge to smoke. Its really a mind over matter deal. You just trick your mind into thinking you DON-T NEED cigarettes, and that they stink and are disgusting... you have to want to quit more than you want to smoke cigarettes. Just think of all the money you will save! Good luck!
I started smoking when I was 13 (just to try it)
I finally quit (for the last time) 32 years later.
I haven-t smoked in 6 years.

The way that worked for me was part physical and part psychological.

I learned a lot from -Smoke Enders- I don-t know if they-re still around, but it teaches you how to identify your specific -triggers- (the phone, after a meal, when you-re stressed) and how to delay automatically picking up a cigarette. And... how to look at smoking and smokers in a different way. (It used to be so cool -- now it-s not)

On the psych side-- once I dealt with NOT smoking after meals, coffee, etc. I had to really look at what my triggers were and how I could handle them without a cigarette. For example, I realized that my main problem was when I got angry, I had to have a cigarette.

Now, I don-t necessarily recommend this -- but, I had a prescription for a very low dose of diazepam. (2mg) Once I had stopped smoking for every reason except that anger (at this point, i was only smoking 3-5 a day) I would take a pill-- if needed. (one a day) It calmed the anger, I didn-t feel like i NEEDED to smoke-- and after a week or so, didn-t want to.

I still have moments when I think, -Oh, man I want a cigarette.- But, I just gently tell myself, -No.- And then, it passes.

It is the toughest thing I ever did. And I-m more proud of quitting than anything else. (really).

It will happen for you when you-re ready.

Good luck!!!! You can do it.
Just quit.

Throw away your cigaretts...

Throw away your ash trays...

Throw away your lighters...

and QUIT.
ask your doctor to put you on the pill. it has help me. the thing with it is that you can still smoke, unlike the gum and the patch. what the pill does is that it completely takes away your cravings. after a couple of days on the pill, you find yourself not being able to finish a ciagrette, then not even wanting one. the key is that you have to continue to take the pill consistently for atleast 3 months. not bad since you have probably been smoking for years. the only side effects i had was dry mouth. but i carried around gum and water for that. good luck. email me if you want more info upfromnutin@yahoo.com
I used to smoke 20-30 Marlboro Reds cigarettes a day, but by using the nicotine patch, I was able to put out my last smoke and never have so much as a puff again. That was many years ago.

Once you decide to quit, tell yourself you are a non-smoker. Don-t say -I-m trying to quit- because that gives you the option of failing. Say you HAVE quit and are a non-smoker. It-s not as difficult that way.
I quit 27 years ago. At the time, I was smoking between 3-4 packs a day and could barely breathe. My doctor told me he would give me medication to mask the symptoms of bronchial asthma, but in three years I would be a weekly patient of his and in five years I would be dead. I never smoked another cigarette, and I quit cold turkey, the only way that worked for me. Hard, but doable. Good luck!!

Chow
i was going back to my home state. i stopped to get gas. got back on the road, reached for my cigarettes. i saw i had only 2 left. i had enough gas to get to my final destination and didn-t want to stop until i got there. i smoked the final 2 cigarettes before my final stop. that-s when i decided to quit, that my friend was 12 years ago.
I just kept thinking like you are how stupid it is to risk my life for something that you have to be addicted to,to enjoy.I quit a few times before it stuck. Now I have been glad I quit for twenty years.I am pulling for you.E-mail me anytime you need some encouragement.
my girlfriend is trying to quit at the mo and it feels like im the one going through hell!
Everyone is different. I quit 22 years ago. I started going to a class to stop smoking that the American Cancer Society put on through the local hospital. When they showed me pictures of healthy lungs and lungs that were from a smoker, it made me think about really wanting to quit. You just have to have the will power to say you are going to do it. They didn-t have the patches and stuff that they got now when I decided to quit so I don-t know how they work. Hang in there if you really and truly want to quit you can and will. Hope it works out for you.

Kathy,

Nobody can make anybody do anything, especially when it comes to an addiction. Only the individual can make the decision for himself.

With regards to the rest of your question, I-m not really sure what you are asking. What do you want to understand, and who might he yell at?
Don-t try to make someone quit smoking. It will just annoy the crap out of them. A friend of mine said he would quit when people stop trying to make him quit.

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

im thinking nicotrol - expensive from what i hear
dont tell me cold turkey
I have smoked for 30 years and 3 months ago i quit. I bought the prescription Chantix. It was the only thing that has ever worked for me. No matter which way you go, you have to really want to quit. I am telling you right now, the sooner you quit the better. The longer you smoke the harder it gets to quit. Just don-t turn into one of those ex smokers who trash people who smoke!!! Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!
Chantix work well , but some people have trouble sleeping while taking the medication.
There is also a clinic that is nation wide that offers a shot behind the ear, the 4 people i know that have used that method have done well and quit.
The patch or gum only work if you have strong will power.
There is something that looks like a cigarette. But it does not have any chemicals and dangerous things in it. It is a placebo. Some people purposely chew something like gum or suck sweets or anything in their mouth to stop their craving for cigarettes. Then religion or motivational talks or hypnosis.
chantix I seen doctors us that a lot. here the web page . http://www.chantix.com/
Anyone I-ve ever known has quit cold turkey. It-s free.

The lingering familiar smell of the tobacco cloud will not be hovering over your head or cling to your hair and clothes. The blanket of stench will be lifted and once again you will be able to breath and actually wake up your taste buds. In other words. stop hiding under the pillow of smoke. you are smothering your life away and it could be a self inflicted attempt at suicidal tendencies.
you may find that the air is not as clear as u think i know i smoke and somebody stood next to me nearly made me pule he smelt so bad bo

Breathe better. Your sense of taste and smell improves tremendously. Your clothes, and body and hair won-t smell of smoke. You-ll feel happy being in control of your life and not some addiction.beyond your control. It-s a monkey off your back. You won-t have the smoker-s cough.
I don-t know about anyone else, but my sense of smell skyrocketed. I could tell if dishes had been left in the sink for a day...I could smell whatever drink had been left in a room without looking...I could smell rain for once! I never had before.
More money :D
your pockets will feel much heavier thanks to all the cash you are saving
It takes awhile but you don-t stink and you can breathe and it takes a while for all that junk to come up from your lungs you can taste food and not pass out going up the stairs and you wont have to dig up money for cigarettes

Some people are more receptive to it than others. Therefore the success or not of it will vary from person to person.

If you have faith in it then go for it. You know you-ll be much better off without cigarettes.
Hypnotherapy really doesn-t have much real world testing to back up its claims as an effective quit smoking tool. Here-s some of the methods out there, and the related success ratio. (Info taken from the U.S. Surgeon Generals Report and http://www.bestquitsmokingblog.com

- Cold Turkey: 3 - 5% success rate

- Nicotine Patches/Gum: 7% (Expensive)

- Order from doctor to stop smoking -or else-: 10%

Support program (SUch as NLP or various quit smoking programs): 30%+

Hypnotherapy isn-t on the list because there wasn-t enough reliable feedback to rate it. But based on the results here, you can judge for yourself which methods work best.
There isn-t a yes or no answer to this, hypnotherapy works based on trust and how much you believe. If you-re convinced that this hypnotherapist will cure your addiction then they probably will, if you doubt it then probably not, and hypnotherapy is not dangerous. xx
Hi I had 1 session and stopped that night from 40 to 0 I had no cravings no stress, I think you have to really want to give up, this was 20 years ago and I`ve never been tempted to smoke, best thing I ever did
It is fairly harmless but also fairly useless, fairing no better than placebo.
