Any tips on how to quit smoking? -

I have made several attempts to quit i was able to for a couple of weeks in october and i-ve gone back and forth from quitting and continuing to smoke my dad says not to worry about but i don-t want to die from lung cancer i kind of worry about too much i just want to be able to quit cold turkey so i can keep healthy thanks guys!
Smoking is an emotional suppressant. The act of smoking keeps you from feeling unpleasant emotions that you are carrying inside of you. Be prepared that when you quit, you will be overwhelmed with every emotion you suppressed while smoking. The reason so many smokers go back to smoking is because they can-t handful unpleasant feelings or situations without smoking. Learn some positive coping skills, find a good counselor, get massage therapy, exercise. Do anything but SMOKE and EAT when you quit. Oh, and don-t forget to cry, because you will, probably for several months. Good luck! I quit after 22 years.
think about your appearence.

when you smoke your teeth turn all brown and ugly and ****

and honestly that is the ugliest thing that could happen to a person.
Don-t smoke. Plain and simple. I quit about a month ago and like you it was the fear of lung cancer that drove me to quitting. I read that on average, when one receives a diagnosis of lung cancer you have 6 months to live. Can you imagine getting that news? Just quit cold turkey. You can do it. Just dont smoke.
hi Alice in chains..

wow been there done that... it does in fact, take multiple attempts for most folks to quit.. i know in my case, it took the better part of 5 years before i actually was able to quit.. while cold turkey is one way of doing it, many folks find other methods use full..

i know for me the one thing that finally worked was to quit trying quit alone.. i joined a support group, and follwed thier advise.. i attend meetings of Nicotien Anonymous, both locally, and on line.. on line voice meetings are as close as your computer, and your welcome to attend meetings, before actually attempting a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck there is simply no wrong way to quit!!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

Think about doing it for someone u love- family, friends, etc. Smoking polutes and can harm everyone nearby. Hey-res special quit smoking lozenges available now in stores. IF its habit, try reading, sucking on candy or some other comfort to use when u want to smoke. It-s a great choice to stop, be encourages thinking of being healthier. Smoking is bad, thinkof what-s in cigarettes: tar, poisonous chemicals, cancer causers, nasty stuff you-d never think of eating or being around and be grossed out by the idea eventually.

Due to the unpleasantness of the withdrawal symptoms, many people who try to quit smoking end up replacing the cigarettes with some other type of addiction. This may be an addiction to prescription medication, such as sleeping tablets or tranquilizers, or an addiction to food. While you will definitely experience the health benefits of giving up nicotine, no one wants to replace one addiction with another!

A healthy diet, adequate exercise as well as natural and holistic treatments such as acupuncture, massage and herbal and homeopathic remedies can also help the smoker overcome nicotine addiction. Herbal and homeopathic treatments are a safe and effective means to reduce nicotine cravings (without giving you more nicotine) and will also help to prevent weight gain and alleviate anxiety and irritability. Basically, natural and holistic treatments not only lessen the urge to smoke, but also help you to restore balance in your body.

There are a number of ingredients such as Avena sativa, Garcinia cambogia and Gotu Cola (Centella asiatica) which will help to address the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. They reduce nicotine cravings and balance the mood.

Has anyone taken chantix to quit smoking? -

Did it work? any side effects? would you reccomend it to someone else?
I have been taking it for 107 days and have been quit for 100. Like all drugs there could be side effects, but most of them can be handled using different methods. Some people complained of nausea; I find that if I take it after I have eaten there seems to be no nausea. The biggest complaint I have heard has been the insomnia or restless sleep. These too pass after time.
Yes I took Chant ix for almost the first - it didn-t seem to help the smoking but it made me very nausous, not actually throwing up but close; I had to lie down or go take deep breaths of fresh air. This happened to a very good friend of mine also. Needless to say I quit taking it. I would tell others to pay attention when they start taking it as at first I didn-t realize that it was making me ill - not something else.

Do i have to quit smoking for a week after i get my teeth pulled dentist said ill get dry socket? -

Do i have to quit smoking for a week after i get my teeth pulled dentist said ill get dry socket? -

Probably not for a week, but you should stop for at least 4 days. Some sources say 3 days, some even say 14 days. This can depend on how complicated your extraction was and how well you heal.

Any kind of suction (smoking, using a straw) can cause dry socket. Dry sockets are quite painful and will delay the healing of your wounds. Smoking causes capillary spasms, which can prevent blood from getting to the healing area, so it can further delay healing.

I had four dry sockets after my wisdom teeth extraction. Mine were caused by not being able to close my mouth because the oral surgeon fractured my jaw.

You do not want to experience the pain of dry sockets. I would rate it up there with childbirth and migraines. I would follow your dentist-s advice.
I never listened to that recommendation and I was OK.
A former coworker ignored the dentist and he got dry socket.
He must have been hitting on the cigarettes hard because it-s the sucking that can pull the clot out of the socket.
Don-t even go to Wendy-s and try to drink a Frosty with a straw.
Do yourself a favour and just quit smoking.

Think how much money you-ll save, how healthier you-ll be and how you won-t stink of stale smoke all the time.

Not just that, you won-t constantly have to have a fag end stuck in your mouth making you look stupid.
I smoked after I got my wisdom teeth pulled out

my gums got all swollen, but I rinsed with salt water like a madman and it was all okay...

I think you should listen to your dentist. Not only will you get dry socket you will risk sucking out the blood clot that formed when he pulled your teeth!

Why cant I quit smoking, what can I try? -

You will quit smoking when you SINCERELY make up your mind that you will be a non-smoker. Once your mind is really made up, you will quit. Also, stop asking -why can-t I quit?- The question should be -How can I quit?- It-s not a question of why because, in fact you really can do it. You just need the method.
Eliminate the word TRY from your vocabulary.
There is no such thing.
Either decide to do it or not!!!!!

there is a new treatment out there - it is laser accupressure.... check it out... I know 3 people that it worked for (3 long time smokers who tried everything else and failed).....

I have tried to quit smoking for 2 years. I stop and start again, sometimes a month sometimes a week? -

I have not smoked in 4 days.

How can I break this of picking it up again?

I don-t want to start again, but I always fail.
I am taking Chantix, (the only thing that has helped me quit on all occasions).

Any advice?
To quit smoking, you can do the following things:

Write down the reasons why you smoke.

Know in which situations you like to smoke best.

You should know these situations very well (for example, when you are having a good time) and start to think of a solution for how you want to deal with that situation. More.

Determine the day you will stop. That can be tomorrow, but you can also wait for a more favourable moment.
Tell the people around you that you are going to quit. Possibly with somebody else.
Take away everything that reminds you of smoking.
Stop radically; it gives you the best chance of success.
Change your eating and drinking habits. Drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fresh fruit and be aware of -pleasure drinks- like coffee, tea and alcohol.
Take care of enough physical relaxation. Go for a walk or a ride or go swimming.
Reward yourself. Do nice things or give yourself something, like a cd or clothes.
If you fall back, don-t give up. Find out in what situation it happened and try to find out with what (alternative) behaviour you can react in the future. If you manage to come through the same situation next time, you have become stronger.
The desire to smoke is one of the first things you notice when you stop smoking. Such a moment lasts a few minutes. It comes, stays for a while and then goes. If you have stopped smoking recently, you will have that desire more often than after a few weeks. After a while, the periods between -wanting to smoke- get longer and longer. Ultimately, the desire to smoke diminishes. Nicotine patches, self-help books and your doctor can help you to stop smoking. Also, health care centres usually have special -quit smoking- programs.

good luck! fight the hard fight I will be pulling for you!
Take each day at a time and fully understand the constituents of cigarettes, the paper contains household bleach amongst a host of other chemicals, the tobacco plant is a completely useless plant for anything other than as a antiseptic against household germs or as a disinfectant.
If after reading this you still want to smoke, swill your mouth with undiluted dental antiseptic and then light a cigarette, it should taste like burning rubber and bad enough to turn you off for life.
Havent smoked in 4 days?
That is really good going!
Chantix is the health service drug and highly effective!
It helped my father quit 10 months ago.
Stick at it! your doing just fine!
Im confident that you can do it!
Just think! If you can go for four days why not the rest of your life?
A day is only a day, no more and no less.
And If not now, When?

No smoking blog

Yeah, you are already a nonsmoker so start seeing yourself that way. Act offended if someone lights up around you. steer clear of -smoking areas-. I understand you will have to act but just do it. Fake it till you make it. Eventually you will change how you see smokers and smoking. and wonder how you could ever have done that.
God bless. Congratulations.

im trying to figure out how to quit smoking, it is hard for me because I enjoy it but I know it is hard on me and i-ve been smoking for 6 years now and now im 21 and im starting get chest pains and difficult breathing and I am way to young for that. So im just curious if anyone can give me VERY GOOD tips on how to quit something I enjoy and addicted to(smoking)
It-s mind over matter.

First of all you have to want to REALLY quit and get your mind made up.

Pick a date and quit.

If you fail, don-t be disappointed. Try and try again till you finally quit.

Last of all don-t ever try not to quit!

I-m a doctor and dying of lung cancer and emphysema is not the way to go.

I quit smoking 5 days ago and I have started coughing up brown phlegm. ? -

Does anyone know what this is and how long this will last?
I am not coughing serverly and I am not sore its just when I cough it comes up. I smoked a pack a day for 12 years and I am now 27 years old if that matters.
Please only respond if you know what you are talking about.
You will have this for 4-6 weeks. That is why so many people start smoking again in this time. It may get worse over the next week or so and then gradually improve.

Smoking doesn-t just put crap into your lungs it also paralyses the hair cells that normally waft dust and smoke out of your lungs. These have now -woken up- and are working overtime.

Basically you have been putting particles of dust and tar into your lungs and it has had no where to go now it is coming back up.

Stick with it, it-s worth it.
Your lungs are finally getting a chance to clear themselves properly. Don-t worry if your sputum is brown or yellow as that-s simply old mucous that-s been sitting there for a while.
You did the best thing you could have by stopping.
God bless you.
it is perfectly normal. it might even get worse and hurt as it moves from deeper bronchioles. but stick with it. its worth it. im smoke free a year now!
Your lungs are cleaning out all of the stuff that was stuck in there . That means the cilia in the lungs are still working . Good luck in quitting
YOUR LUNGS ARE CLEARING ALL THE DEBRIS FROM THEM. this is normal and will clear up pretty soon.

Good Luck

[i quit when the ban came in and never looked back!]
its all the cr*p clearing from your lungs persevere and don-t give up it will get better

Oprah had her personal --fitness coach-- to help her lose weight.
You could possibly hire a personal trainer to do that kind of thing. Start calling around and asking.

i,ve ben trying for 3 years to quit smoking and ive tryed the patches the gum and even pills i need help!!!
It-s hard! So you must try HARDER!
Well, according to BODY - SOUL, there are 3 ways that have the highest success possibilities.
1. Acupuncture (80%)
This Chinese traditional alternative medication has become quite popular these days, even in USA, the country full of technology. Don-t worry, it-s not hurt (at all!), because I have once before, to cure my asthma and it just make my back a little sore (only when the neddle on my back, after that the sore is gone).
Just make sure you get a good doctor. Just like normal doctor, there are many acupuncture doctor out there. Usually, they have certificates to qualify the doctors.
2. Hypnotize (~60%, not quite remember)
This one I never have, but according to Body - Soul, it worked so nothing to lose, jsut try it (if the first one failed you.
3. Sorry, I really forget about this one, but the percentage only ~40% anyway...

In the end, it-s all depends on your COURAGE and COMMITMENT. I know someone who stop smoking only because he wanted to do so and he was smoking badly (~15 years, yes, he is 45 years old, and about 3 packs a day, yes, his health was very, very bad)
and I also know someone who nearly died because of smoking too much, but still smoking until now (he still alive though).

Well, I really hope this can help you and you can quit smoking ASAP.
The first step is DON-T TELL ANYONE!! Otherwise it becomes a regular topic for conversation that is a constant reminder. Just tell them you are -cutting down- if you get any questions. Don-t hang out were there are smokers. Instead of spending break out on the smoke porch, stay inside and chat up new people. If it-s a hand-to-mouth reflex that it was with me, buy suckers in bulk! That will knock out the nervous habit. Quitting smoking isn-t just a decision, it-s a life-long overhaul of your life and habits. Not just keeping from buying cigarettes.
I quit with Zyban. It worked very well for me. Every time I thought about smoking one on the side, I reminded myself this-quitting smoking is easy, dying from cancer, thats hard.
Switch to CARLTONs as they have only 1 mg tar and 1 mg nicotine per cig and your current cigarette has probably 12-15 times that much. Don-t inhale deeply. Cut yourself off gradually!!!!
I smoked a pack or more a day for two years before I decided to quit smoking. It took a couple trys for me. The first time it was cold turkey and it was hell. The second time I was on anti-depressants and that helped enormously, but as soon as I got off of them I started smoking again wich was stupid on my part. After that I tried the gum but then I just got adicted to the gum. By then I was so tired of all the crap I quit cold turkey again. I haven-t smoked for over 2 months, and this time I-m positive it-s going to stay that way. Keep trying! Every time you do it gets a little easier.

What was the toughest part when you quit smoking? -

Hardest part for me after I quit was fighting the moments I felt a cigarette was most appropriate:

1) In the Morning
2) Out Drinking
3) After Eating
4) After Sex
5) Stressful situations

During those times it became like second nature for me to have a smoke, so when I quit, the hardest part was not having one during those times.
the whole quitting thing ( i cant)
Dunno, haven-t quit. Can-t!

Whats a Good Quit Smoking Book? -

Has anyone ever bought one of the quit smoking books? Are any of them good?
I tried everything to quit smoking, cold turkey, patches, gum etc but none of these methods even came close to working for me.

Through sheer frustration I decided to come up with my own quit smoking technique and low and behold it worked. Not only did it work but it made the whole quitting process easy. My partner was also a smoker and he saw the results I had so decided to try it out for himself. He managed to quit first time and also found it easy. We have not touched a cigarette since and no longer get cravings of any kind.

We firmly believe that smoking is far more psychological than it is physical. Our system deals with the psychological addiction to smoking. Too many quit smoking products only deal with the physical addiction and that is why the never work.

Once you have dealt with your psychological reasons for smoking, the physical addiction becomes very easy to overcome.

It is our goal to help as many people to quit smoking as we possibly can. Hopefully you will be one of them.

Its a MUST to get Allen Carr-s book. Wow... I have yet to find someone who didn-t love it. There are a few goofy things in there, but if you get the point (and you will) you will be in awe of his book.

I-m going to pass on something else I found useful when I quit ... check it out sometime:

I used that site when I quit, along with the book and together it got me through my quit. (its free).

Also, I think Allen Carr-s book may be on line. Try Google.

Good luck!

Does my partner have the right to ask me to quit smoking? -

We have ben together for 2 years and she wants me to quit smoking. She knew I smoked when we met and she started smoking agian shortly after we got together. She has quit recently and wants me to also. For health reasons, she says..
What do you think?????
After 2 years, you should know if she-s sincere and has your best interest at heart. So maybe she is selfish a bit and doesn-t like the second-hand smoke risk. She went your route for a bit, why not try her way now. It could be good for you. How great would that be? This is a win-win situation. Good luck.
It would be better for your health indeed, but as a former smoker of about 30 years (3 months quit) it is not her decision and I understand she cares for you but if you go on the outside and smoke away from non-smokers it should not be an issue that keeps others harping on you. Ask but for goodness sake do not make a smoker feel as if he is committing a mortal sin for smoking, and besides you only make the decision to quit when you are ready. Good Luck
Yes, she can ask you to quit. But it is your health and your choice. You can be kind and go outside and smoke. That would be respecting her space and supporting her during a difficult time while she is working on not smoking. I am a former smoker, my partner is not a smoker at all. I used to go back and forth with smoking, but I decided to stop for her health and mine, not because she asked me. It never got to that point.
she can ask you to quit....but that doesnt mean you have to do it........
Well she-s probably asking you to quit because she is concerned about you.I keep telling people around me that i care about to quit smoking..You know it has nothing to do with you.But I-ve watched this one lady die of lung cancer from smoking and that-s not a pretty site. This lady was so uncomfortable and you could tell. She couldn-t breathe for nothing and she was on like 8 leaders of oxygen..So look at it this way. She doesn-t want you to get lung cancer. Trust me it-s not a pretty site.Plus the second hand smoke why should she have to breath it in if she doesn-t smoke? As for does she have that right yes i do believe she should have that right. You are polluting her lungs as well as your own. Good luck and i hope this website will help you better understand what i am trying to say..Good luck and God Bless!!
she can ask you. but its you what you choose...she-ll ask you if you love me then do it for me..
All she can do is make the request of you. Yes she is making this request because she cares for you, but quitting smoking is a very personal thing and hard. It is your choice and no one can force you to do it. I will warn you that if she feels very strongly about it she will give you ultimatums. Be ready.
she just doesn-t want you DEAD
Yes,, for your good health she can tell you so, it-s better you too to quit smoking.
I think your partner cares enough about herself - and you and the relationship - to have quit. This is why she wants you to quit smoking as well.

Has anyone tried the chantix to quit smoking? -

i want to quit smoking and was wanting to try the chantix but ive heard some terrible side effects, such as suicidal thoughts, weird dreams and so forth. has anyone used chantix and if so what were your side effects and did it work?
I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article:

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!
Matthew.
Last year I went to my doctor and she gave me champix to quit smoking. The pill worked very well. About the fifth week of taking this I found that my sleeping was being disturbed. I hate to take a relaxant off the shelf for a short time then I was okey. The pill worked well and I didn-t crave smokes. When I was finished the pills I noticed I was gaining weight. So of course this made me upset and I began smoking again. I think champix is a good pill to try, but you have to be very strong minded not to want smokes. Try it, it may work for you. Cocoa
Now that you are worried about the side effects, don-t use it then. There are varieties of options out there for you to quit smoking. You can quit smoking even without any outside help including patches and pills.
Yes, it-s great stuff. I had the weird dreams, they-re nothing -- just vivid dreams. Also a bit of nausea, again, nothing serious. A minority of people *do* get serious side effects, so if you have a history of depression/suicidal ideation stay away and if something strange happens, stop taking it and call your doctor. And tell someone else so they can monitor you for altered behavior and help out if you need it.
My husband and his father both used Chantix to quit smoking, and it worked very well for them.
My husband had to stop taking them after about 4 weeks because he was very nauseated (his worst side effect), and he even vomited once when he was around the smell of cigarette smoke. His other side effect was that he had trouble sleeping a bit, and had lots of strange dreams.
But he quit just over 2 years ago now, and the urge to smoke never came back.
My father in law was a very heavy smoker, and I never thought he could quit, but he did (it-ll be a year in January). He also said he had nausea, but he continued the pills, and it worked.
Good luck!

I am considering taking Chantix to help me in quitting smoking. However, I was wondering if anyone was aware of any problems that the drug has fostered or created?
I heard nothing else than 6 times superior nausea frequency.

Some studies are stating that Chantix has the best effectiveness to quit smoking, but I-m not sure about taking drugs to quit smoking... I-ll try patches next time I quit !

How can I quit smoking, and not gain weight? -

Thanks for your answers.
try the gum...it will keep your mouth busy...start exercising as soon as you quit....i was so excited that i could breathe easier so quickly! Just start power walking or even slow walking...just get outside and breathe in that good stuff!
You need to control your food intake. I eat two meals a day and I make sure that one of the meals per day is a healthy one. I jog 4 days a week for about 45 minutes each time, and I-m very skinny. Do what I do, that-s it.
start exercising and don-t reach for food to take the place of you cigs
Both are solved through the same procedure of self hypnosis. When you hypnotize yourself, you reach the state of relaxation which allows you to control somewhat your mind. In that state of relaxation it might be enough to imagine yourself the way you would like to look, to lose weight. You can learn about self hypnosis from an expert hypnotherapist, or from a book. I suggest William Hewitt-s Hypnosis for Beginners that covers all the rudiments you need to know. Hope that helps.
always have gum on hand and chew chew chew! a small part of smoking is oral fixation (not the Shakira Album) you actually become attached to having something in your hand and/or mouth
See mothers trying to get their kids of their pacifiers, then they suck thier thumbs, then finally they get teased in school for sucking on their thumbs and they finally stop.SAME THING. Chew gum or anything to keep your mind off smokes, or yes you will be shoving every morsel of food you can find in your mouth even if you are not hungry

Quitting smoking is a VERY hard thing to do~ Congradulations ~ and please dont give up! Good Luck
There is no substitution other then will power in either scenario. To quit smoking, you really have to want to quit. Make it for two weeks and you’re on your way. If you need food as a sub to the smokes, eat fruit and raw veggies as a sub. I quit smoking - drinking 12/01/06 and have lost 19 lbs
easy dont smoke, and start working out.

Hi, Graciefan1.

First off, congratulations on wanting to quit smoking! The best advice I can offer is to be ready to quit and to have a desire to live healthy. Once you start changing your habits to live healthier, smoking will be much easier to quit!

If you are looking for something NATURAL that really works, with no side effects, I actually have 2 recommendations. I did both of these and have been cigarette free for 2 years and do not ever have cravings! It is so great, and I just want to share it with anyone who really wants to quit. You WILL stop smoking for good. It will change your life. You can get all the info here:
http://www.optimumlifenow.com/QuitSmokin…

I-ve tried Chantix, Wellbutrin, the patch, nicotine gum, cold turkey, and so on, to quit smoking and nothing worked as good as the Quit Smoking Right Now program. Perhaps that is what you saw on tv?

I wish you the best of luck no matter which of the many available methods you decide to use.

How can i help my boyfriend quit smoking dope?? -

I really want to help him! whats the best way without him going crazy??
your a princess-that is like saying how do i stop eating garbage-or get it not to smell so bad-dont be an enabler-get Jesus into your heart and get a guy that lives for Jesus too-david in his amazing grace-the happiest-i was all that trash once too! Jesus will get u higher than wack weed and u dont go to jail for being around a criminal -Jesus cares let him
Every time he pulls out his pipe, tell him you-ll give him a bllowjob if he puts it down. And then do it. Worked for me.
Kick him really hard in the man marbles. If this does not work, which it probably won-t, tell him if he doesn-t stop smoking weed, then you stop smoking his meat log.
Come-on -MO- be nice. Cokes, you Talk to him first, and threaten to leave if he doesn-t stop, stop please run for your life before you get in too deep.
Leave him and let him get his life together - he has to want to do it or he will never stop. Maybe talk to his family and plan an intervention and get him into rehab.
Maybe you have allready tried showing him how much you love him and don-t want him to smoke up, weed is very addictive and not easy to quit. If you tell him you-re gonna break up with him if he doesn-t quit, he might get stressed and want to smoke up. He probebly will get a bit crazy like many do when they haven-t got any bud, but maybe try to give him lots of attention. Find something that makes him really happy that doesn-t include getting high. Although it was my decision, I quit for my girlfriend, and for myslef, but it would have been extremely difficult to do with out her. For SOME PEOPLE, quitting weed is like giving up a friend, I don-t know how big of a smoker he is, but show him that you are a better friend than any blunt, or bowl full will ever be. I don-t know if this helps or not, but it did in my case. I guess you be the judge.
Hey, i think you-re the one the needs help first --- a shrink in particular
If you consider yourself a decent and intelligent girl why in the hell did you get yourself a dope smoking BF.

Boy, you must probably be that desperate to get yourself a man.
Don-t stop him join him!
That u will dump him..........
If he smokes weed then leave him alone. Anything else just dump him.
tell him ur keeping urlegs closed till he gives it up...
Threaten to report him to the police
You CAN-T make someone do something they don-t want to do. If he wants to quit he will. Don-t stick around just because you hope he will quit or change.
have him put in a Dry out house.
say you-ll leave him if he dont. if he really cares about you he-ll stop. if not, you-ll know he-s just an ***. ---but since he smokes dope in the first place, he probably is an ***.
It-s just like quitting any habit, he has to want to do it. Making him do it won-t work. Try to encourage him to quit, but again, he has to want to quit for it to work.

I have been a smoker for 28 long years, tried numerous times to quit. The longest I was able to hold out was 3 days. Out of my immediate family, only my 27 year old daughter doesn*t smoke,(Thank God) I*m getting on up in age, and have concerns for my health, as well as second hand smoke and it*s effect on my grandchildren. My bf isn*t a smoker ,he hasn*t said anything but I know that this concerns him. I*ve tried the patches...a no go..they caused me to break out in a rash. Tried the zyban pills once....couldn*t remember to take them.(I*m not a daily medicine type person). Tried going cold turkey....the withdrawals became so intense till on the 3rd day I gave in and lit one up. I have no health insurance and can*t afford financially to experiment with this new drug that they have out($110 for a month supply) Anyone having quit that can share How they did it, What worked for them would be greatly appreciated.
The best methods in my opinion is a reduction method. This means if you smoke a pack a day on the first day you remove 1 cigarette and throw it away (don-t store it for a rainy day) Stay with that for a week and the following week remove 2 so on and so forth. This method has worked for many people.

It works because it SLOWLY reduces your bodies need for the amount of nicotine. I have found people that have cut cold turkey fall off the band wagon more as those who also use the patch or gum. Also helps for you to set up a time limit on smoking such as stop smoking 2 hrs before you go to bed etc. Remember when the day is done and you have cigarettes left you have to throw that pack away don-t hoard unused cigarettes. While you will be wasting money throwing them away it-s not near the money you would spend on medication, hypnotherapy etc. I hope this helps.
Like you I tried patches but got a burning sensation and a rash. My doctor told me to switch brands and to try them in different places, which I did. I find they burn less on my thighs and only leave a small mark when they are removed, and lets face it, this far outweighs the negatives of smelly clothes/house/hair, having to nip out of places for a cig and the health problems and guilt about second hand smoke. I stuck with the patches but also used the inhaler when cravings got relly really bad, it worked!! I was on AT LEAST 25 a day. The main cravings really do go with patches, best thing is to keep busy. if you are worried about putting on weight, do what my mum did and buy a massive bag of sugar free lollipops, they give you that hand-to-mouth satisfaction and action without it being a biscuit or crisps!! Also did you know that just by having nicotine in your system you burn an extra 200 calories a day? So the best thing would be to simply reduce your intake by 200 calories a day (around 2pieces of bread/1 choc bar/2bananas) otherwise 200 calories a day over a week is like eating an extra full days food a week and leads to the misconception that quitting smoking MAKES you put on weight. Also, I used to have a cup of tea, toast and then a cig first thing in the morning, I found it so hard to have tea and toast without the habitual cig, so instead of craving the missing part of my breakfast (the cig) I changed my breakfast to cereal and juice, it worked wonders, do this for as many of your normal cig routines as possible and it will really make those cravings easier.
I certainly wish you luck, but I too am a long term smoker that would like to quit for health reasons. I-ve heard that nicotine is more addictive than heroin, but I don-t know. One time I almost made it...I started by only allowing myself 1 cigerette per hour. then every 2 hours and so on. I was down to 1 cigarette a day, but couldn-t bring myself to throw it away. Then going out with friends to the bar, the next thing you know I was bumming smokes, and finaklly got a pack. Now I smoke 1/2-1 pack per day. So like I said...good luck!
Being in the National Guard I have heard a couple different stories. I have heard to run when you want one. But what about those that can-t run? Others say chew gum. I always have people ask me for gum, and it cost about the same price. I have even heard of people that pinch themselves when they are fiending. I went cold turkey by being locked in a house for over a year. But when I had the chance, I was on it. You just have to find something that works for you. Sing a song, dance, read, anything to get your mind off of it. I hope this helps! Good luck

Personal experiences?
The 5 most common, worst mistakes made by smokers trying to quit were nearly all mentioned by the first responder. With all do respect, this isn-t a vitamin, chemical or replacement issue...it-s a 100% lifestyle change issue.

1. Tapering-off is the most destructive method to stop smoking forever, because it actually reinforces the smoking habit by using a reward-based philosophy that rewards the brain for its patience with a cigarette. It is the technique that is most commonly used and then cheated on.

2. Using physical replacements are equally hostile to success, because they remind you that you-d rather be smoking than crunching on a carrot stick or drinking copious quantities of water or sucking on a menthol stick, it still keeps you subtly connected to cigarettes...silliness.

3. Nicotine replacements, like the patch is also destructive and expensive because it keeps you connected to nicotine, which keeps you connected to cigarettes. What other addiction do people recommend using a synthetic form of the drug to quit that drug?

4. People trying to stop smoking on a major holiday or weekend or other personal day are setting-up failure.

5. Stop referring to the process as QUITTING. This is regressive and saps motivation. If we learned anything from the no-carb diets of a few years ago, you can-t quit something the brain likes or craves.

You must refer to this process as becoming a non-smoker. This simple change in terminology creates and generates desire, motivation and determination, the 3 essential elements to staying smoke-free for life.
First off, congratulations for WANTING to quit smoking!!

As far as answering, there are a lot of ways, and it also depends on how much you-ve been smoking. The best ways are slowly lowering your dose (takes a long time sometimes), or going cold turkey (which is faster, but harder). Either way, the last thing is making the decision to quit, so you-ll eventually have to deal with the withdrawal.

For the most part, when you deal with withdrawal, you-ll just have to tough it out, but there are some things that can help cleanse out the toxins and may help to minimize some of the effects of withdrawal...
Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it-s not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get).

All that being said, it-s likely that the symptoms should stop relatively shortly after your last smoke (it-s never as long as it feels like it is). Your neurotransmitters don-t take too terribly long to scream for something they are addicted to after you stop.
Another important thing to note is that no matter how bad it gets, taking more of the drug (and yes, nicotine is a drug) will only make the withdrawal last longer and will be harder on you in the long run. Good luck, and congrats again!
i smoked for 20 years and quit 40 years ago and i can-t say it was easy but i did it by taking it one day at a time. after i quit for one day i didn-t want it to go to waste so i wouldn-t smoke that next day and that went on day after day. it-s will power, i didn-t have any help. after i quit i was suprised at how well if felt physcially. food tasted better and my clothes didn-t reek of tobacco. good luck---you can do it

How did you quit smoking? -

How old were you when you started and when you quit? what methods did you use to quit?
I started at fifteen and I am going to be 27.I am currently still smoking and every few days I cut my cigarettes by a half,so now I am smoking two a day.
I started smoking when I was 15 and it was really cool. If only I knew. I quit when I was 53. I quit with the patch and then used the gum for a while. The patch really did the trick and for backup the gum was ok. On the gum for a spell but finally finished with it all. Never have had another cigarette and don-t even want one. Once you quit you sure as hell don-t want to start and go through all the BS again.
Good luck to you but do quit. It is just a waste of money and it is killing you slowly.
Please, don-t quit.
I quit smoking, when i stopped meeting my friends..and stayed home for 2-3 week :)
