Chantix, the quit smoking pill, How much does it cost? -

My husband doesn-t have insurance, we are in the process of setting it up, how much would it cost with out insurance?
It runs about $120.00 for a months supply. You can take it up to 3 months. My insurance doesn-t cover it, so you better check and see if yours does.
Well I work in a doctors office and I know that we give out free samples all day long. Maybe you can go to your doctor and ask for them and act like they are for you....???
You can find a price of $167 and $169 over internet . More info here:

http://www.quitsmokinghope.com/buy/chant…

Not 100% sure, but Walmart (OHIO) had a 90 supply for around 160.00. Most insurance won-t pay for it, but 160.00 is still cheaper than all the money you-ll spend on cigs!
It-s around $100 for a month-s supply, but think about it this way: he-s probably spending well over that in cigarettes each month, and after 3 months on the Chantix, he should be completely tobacco-free. If not, he can get it another couple months. I highly recommend it, we prescribe it to our patients and it WORKS.

Oh, and by the way: Ask the doctor for a coupon. We have all kinds for like $20 off.

Ive decided to quit smoking, need help!? -

last night as i lay in bed gasping for air, i finally decided to quit smoking. i have bronchitis pretty bad right now but dont have insurance to see a doctor. i know that if it gets any worse, which it usually does, i will have to go to the ER. I was wondering if anyone has some good advice to keep myself on track. It has been 7 hours since my last cigarette and with a two years old running amuck it has been hell.
I used this site when I quit and it was a real lifesaver. Take the time to check it out (its free too which is great). Gives you lots of tips, answers to questions and support all day and all night.

Good luck!

Try some cinnamon suckie candies, or any kind of suckie candy, or even sun flower seeds can help keep your mouth busy. Also call 1-800-NO BUTTS and they can hook you for free with the nicotene patch to help you quit smoking. Good luck and congrats on making such a tough decision, Oh ya and there is also a prescription they can give you called welbutrin, but being since you don-t have any medical coverage, I would call the NO BUTTS number so you can get help for free.
I-m on week 7, and no relapse,

I can say that on the fourth day you will start to feel better, that-s the day i got out and ran a mile(that-s really not that far) and i coughed and coughed and got some of that bad stuff out. now i run every other day and feel great, i don-t feel sluggish any more or tired all the time.I know its hard, you always want to set time aside for that little puff puff. well ignore that and try and set something else in its place, like something that takes care of your body, like brushing your hair or applying skin lotion. anything that works, really. Oh and i have a 2 year old too, and i run and roll with him and -fly- around the house all the time, i love to see him laugh and giggle when i am playing with him.Good luck, you have a very special friend there that needs you and wants you and no one else. Take care.
Try running amuck with the two year old. When you exercise with your children you can do things together, it will take your mind off smoking, and it will help open up your lungs. I don-t know how brochitis might affect that, but hey I never said I was a doctor.

Plus you should smoke weed. I agree with my Nappy Princess up there.
if you really want to quit you will be fine ---- just a little uncomfortable for a few days but then it-s all in your head.
this is happining because your craving for fags.Try chewing gum to stop cravings.
I went to my doctor and started taking a new prescription medication that really worked for me. It is called Chantix. I had tried everything. You can look it up at www.chantix.com or call 1-877-CHANTIX. Many people need to take it for three months. The least expensive pharmacy was Costco. Good luck!
you cant take care of your child if you die, go to the er now.
It-s great that you want to quit. I really recommend this site to help you be successful:

Patches, pills and Gum don-t work. The process in this program really does work.

Tom
im quitting right now myself, im on day 13. I used the patch for the first couple days, my partner is using the gum. If you use either, make sure you do steady usage, remember to put the patch on every morning, or remember to chew a new piece of gum every hour -set an alarm, it helps-.

Another thing to remember, cravings will go away wheather you smoke the cigarette or not. Just keep saying you dont need it, and within 2-15 minutes, you wont anymore because the craving will go away. Talking to people and having people support you helps.

Also, if you cheat -try not to of course- Its not the end of the world. Just find out why you did it, avoid the situation, and dont do it again. Dont do what we did and every time we cheated, started smoking again -weve been trying to quit for 6 months now-.

Good luck!
Congratulations! Try nicorette gum of patches
It only takes three days for the nicotine to leave your system. Then it is a mental battle. A tough one at that! The best thing to do is keep busy. Keep some candy and water at hand and every time you feel like your missing something eat some candy or drink some water. It worked for me. After the first three days you should notice that the physical cravings aren-t very strong anymore. Once you are here you have made it through the hardest part so hang in there. The only way to quit smoking is to NEVER take another puff again. Not socially, not when your drinking, never. Once your brain reaches a level of nicotine addiction it will never go away. When you go back to smoking you pick up right where you left off. Sometimes worse. So no cheating. Other than that I would suggest strengthening your will to quit by doing some research.
Check out this website for further inspiration
Whyquit.com
Read the nicodemon-s lies page. Very helpful! Good luck!
Firstly, congrats. This is a hard thing to do but it will pay off soo much in the long run. Plus... think if the cash you-ll save!

You need to find a substitution. When you crave a smoke, insert substitution here. I think carrots are good... those baby carrots. Have one or two when you want a smoke. Others prefer sun flower seeds... but you-ll find your vice.

When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water

If you want to ween yourself off, try buying cigarettes that you absolutely cant stand!

Change your morning routine. When you eat breakfast, don-t sit in the same place at the kitchen table. Stay busy.

Good luck!!!
As a healthcare provider I have been prescribing Chantix for my patients. The success rate is over 80%. Look it up on the website. Its a great new med to help beat tobacco dependency. My patients have loved how it worked for them.
I know many people who have found this book helpful. They also have a version specifically aimed at women. Good luck!

Edit: I have to disagree with everyone that says to use a substitute. The problem with smoking isn-t just the nicotine, but even more so the habit itself--the oral fixation, etc.... Even if you replace it with something healthy such as carrot sticks, sunflower seeds, or whatever, it still is going to make it easier to start again in the future; you haven-t gotten out of the habit of putting something to/in your mouth. Also the book I was referring to in the link is called -The EASYWAY to stop smoking- I have known this book to help a lot of people using no gums, patches or other alternatives.
Carrot sticks, straws, tooth picks, talking with people that don-t smoke, and pray a lot. No luck......simply Bless you.

How to quit smoking? -

I-m 23 years old and have been a heavy smoker for almost 8 years now (one pack a day). I want to quit but don-t know how. Gums and nicotine patches don-t work :(
You-re right. Gums and patches don-t work. They can only help. YOU have to do the work and it isn-t easy.

I quit smoking in my mid-30-s after years of smoking 1-2 packs a day. Back then, there were no gums or patches (I-m nearly 70, now). I did it just by quiting and staying quit. It-s one of the hardest things I ever did, but I was determined. I made up my mind that I didn-t want to smoke anymore and I just quit. I was irritable, shouted at everyone, blamed who or what ever was in site for my bad mood. My children were ready to throw me out of the house.

I wish I could give you more help but, as I said before, this is something you just have to do on your own. Gums and patches may help, but they won-t make you quit. That-s up to you.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
i smoked for 4 years same amount as you! I quit cold turkey. i met a guy who didnt smoke and my ex smoked alot too so being with this new guy helped because i wasnt tempted to through out the day. i dont know if alot of your friends do but the only time i smoke is lke once a month when im with a friend that does il have one or two lol..of course ill want more the next day but i dont rely on them anymore. also i gained alot of weight when i quit becausei ate when i felt a craving. not good lol but now i can excersise better
do a sport that you are good at or like. Running helped to motivate me to quit because I knew to run well you need good lungs, so I shouldnt- smoke. Worked well enough for me.
Perhaps joining a Quit Smoking Clinic might be an option.

If you have HIV, should you quit smoking? -

Obviously smoking is bad for you. My boyfriend smokes and was diagnosed with HIV 4 years ago (still doesn-t need meds). I-m wondering if quitting smoking will greatly impact his life in regard to the development of AIDS, and in assisting death.

I-m not asking if smoking will kill him. That will obviously, eventually. I-m asking if quitting smoke is a good idea in respect to HIV and the development of AIDS, or if it will really make much of a difference.
only one way to find out...
Yes its a good idea id he does quit cus here is the thing...people don-t die from aids technicaly speaking they die from all the illneses they get cus their immune system is low so they can-t fight of the illness so if he is smoking he needs to quit asap it will not help him at all! He will get lung cancer much faster than a person without Hiv.
Yes. When you have HIV your immune system is compromised. If you smoke then your lungs are deteriorating. Your weak immune system can-t fight off the toxins in the cigarettes and you-ll just get lung cancer faster.
I would assume so

How long before an outpatient surgery is performed should one quit smoking? -

I have heard estimates from three weeks to three days. What have you been told?

And, please, no smug advice about how one should stop altogether; we already *know* that.
Funny question. I am out the door in about 15 min to go to the hospital for back surgery. I am a smoker, but I plan to quit during my stay there. But, to answer your question, it-s only 24 hours prior to your surgery. That-s what the admissions nurse told me and that is what is on my pre-surgical instructions. And I am going to be under general anesthesia (totally out), for at least an hour.
Also, you cant have any alchohol for 24 hrs. And you cant eat or drink after midnight the night before. (I-m pretty hungry)
In 3month before surgery
I was told 24 hours for my last surgery!

Can someone give me personal advice on how to quit smoking? -

I really need to quit. I was able to quit for six years, the person I was in a relationship with wanted me to. Now, I am serious about another person who really wants me to quit for my own health. I know I have to do it for myself, so don-t bother with that shtick, its just HOW to do it for myself that is a problem. Any tips, websites, tricks, advice greatly apprieciated!!
go to american cancer web site. drink tons of water. avoid stimulant, caffeen and alcohol. exercise !
I smoked 3 packs/ day. the only way i quit and did not go back was to acknowledge that it-s a drug addition and a strong one.
don-t cut down, or do the patch. Just quit, peroid. there is not trick or easy way, you have to fight it and it is not easy. Do NOT underestimate that drug additction.
decide you are not a smoker and will not be.
You are in charge ( and you are). the drug will fight you, just remember YOU are in charge and do not give in. don-t get sucked into the - oh, I will get fat, - i will do it tomjorrow, i can-t do it. It-s the drug talking.
fight ! I had to fight minute to minute and it was tough, after 3 days only noticed slightly better. but, yes you can.
picture a big garage door slamming shut if you think of smoking slam that door every time.
keep that mind set up even after you quit. you have to de=program yourself but i have to tell you it is wonderful !
good luck
The things that helped me most were these.
1. Stop immediately, break and toss your last pack.
2. Keep a toothpick or cocktail straw on hand always. Holding a toothpick will satisfy the hand to mouth urge better than just chewing gum will. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke, chew on something.
3. Remember that the urge lasts 15 seconds and goes away. You may have that urge for years to come but if you can hold off for 15 seconds, you won-t need to smoke.
4. Take a look at your older friends or relatives who smoke. Ever notice how many more wrinkles they have? It-s true, smoking ruins your skin.
Why dont u just say no to the habit? Just stop and quit allowing ur money to go up in smoke? Sit down and hit the calculator in Xp and rejoice at how your savings will grow by the day/week in not burning EXPENSIVE cigarettes.
Hmmmmmm? Good luck I am with you on this, I know it is not easy. (nicotine is known to be more habit forming than cocaine.)
If you really want to quit then you can. You have to really put your mind to it and just say NO MORE!!! I quit cold turkey after smoking a pack and a half for over 30 years. The first week is the hardest. But just keep telling yourself you want to be healthy and chew gum, keep your self busy and you will be fine. GOOD LUCK!!!

Rose

How long will this last? It sucks because i question myself in the middle of the night if i did or not.
thats very common... its your subconscious mind.

it could take anything up to 6 months to go away... once your mind gets out of the habit of thinking about it.

How do i get my mom to quit smoking? -

my mom smokes and it wastes a lot of money what are some things i can give her to try so she can quit
Well first of all you can-t -make- your mom do anything, she has to want to quit. You can beg and plead until you are blue in the face but it will do not good. Smokers know the heath risks involved with smoking, but it is an addiction, the same as coke or heroin, and hard to quit.

It took my Mom being told that she had Barrett-s disease to make her quit and then it still wasn-t easy. Talk to your mom and explain your fears, and ask if she would be willing to try.

My mom went on a antidepressant, and patches to stop.

Good Luck
I have the same problem. My mom smokes and I can-t stand it. She started when she was 16. She wasn-t addicted then, but she would smoke every weekend. Then about 4 or 5 years ago, she started smoking again and now she-s totally addicted and I swear she does not want to stop. So I started smoking just to get her annoyed, because she is being a hypocrite and telling me not to. So whenever she tells me to stop smoking, I just respond, -I will when you do.- I hope it will get to her eventually. And I know it-s not the best way to try to get her to stop, but she-s tried nicotine gum and prescribed pills, but she just won-t take them.
And I-m not addicted to smoking.
Put together some pictures of people that have experienced operations, due to cancer caused illnesses, from smoking.

Had a supervisor who smoked 3 paks a day. Developed cancer in the roof of his mouth and had it operated on and recovered in the cancer ward of a state hospital. After seeing the other people there with teeth missing, parts of lips, gums and jaws missing - he stopped smoking and his wife did also.

Tell her you love her and do not want this to happen to her.
Possibly the Allen Carr -Easy Way to Stop Smoking- DVD. If she watched it, it would point out how she-s been conned on a grand scale.
The thing is a person has got to want to quit smoking to do so and although it wastes money to her it doesn-t. Smoking costs much more than money and she will know this
Badgering a smoker to stop smoking very often only results in one thing, they dig their heels in further and continue to smoke.
You can-t you just have to love her as she is even though you shouldn-t stop telling her your feelings. Smoking is a powerful ediction which is magnified by the fact that its legal and socially acceptable. She has to make the decision for herself. Just make sure you don-t get caught up in second hand smoke. You have a greater chance of getting lung cancer from second hand smoke than she does from smoking. Just lead by example by respecting your own health.
blatently start smoking around the house sayintg that she leads by example. if that dont work then explain that the second hand smoke has over the years affected your health and increased the likelyhood that you get throat and lung infections (not cancer! 2nd hand smoke does not cause cancer. better than 90% of the crap in the smoke is already over this guys mum-s lungs)
Tell her you love her and by smoking, she is hurting herself and those around her (including you)...

Worked for me!

Answer mine:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

hey
just tell her to stop if she really cares about how you feel and you know blah blah blah
it didnt work on my mom
but you can try!

goodluck i know what it feels like
Until your mom decides to quit smoking, there isn-t much you can do. She is well aware that it hurts her health and wastes money.
Maybe everytime she lights up tell her - I see you-re going to put another nail in your coffin, or there you go again another cancer stick.
take some time to do some research on different ways that people stop smoking, and support her and keep her accountable all the way through!
INTERVENTION!!
hide her cigs!
Threaten to start?
slap her
tell your mom the effects that she can get by smoking:lung cancer, death, bad breath, yellow finger nails, bad teeth, wrinkles, she will smell bad,she can give cancer to loved ones, kill loved ones, she can even have a heart attack it can be severe,or minor.and tell her how endearing(precious)she is to you!and if she tries to quit support her because when your trying to accomplish something its easier to have support!GOOD LUCK!to you and your mom!

Will taking Chantix to quit smoking make me gain weight? -

I heard from someone that one of the side effects would be minor weight gain, even if you eat right. Anyone know if this is true?
On this site describing all side effects (and there are many), there is no mention of weight gain; although decreased metabolism--from the lack of nicotine--will usually cause a bit of weight gain.

Why Is Welbutrin Prescribed To People Who Are Trying To Quit Smoking? -

Why Is Welbutrin Prescribed To People Who Are Trying To Quit Smoking? -

A co-worker said her doctor prescribed Welbutrin to her because she is trying to quit smoking. I aked her why, but she said, -I don-t know.- I think I would of had to ask, but thats just me. It has me wondering why. Anyone know?
Wellbutrin was given to depressed people and it was found that some of the smokers also stopped as a side effect. So the drug maker marketed a new product now called Zyban.
Zyban or Wellbutrin are SSRs, meaning - they are a class of drugs dealing with selective serontonin re-uptake. It is designed to -top up- the serontonin supply, which act on the brain-s neuro pathways triggering a supply of -mood changing- chemicals... similar to the reaction smokers get from nicotine.

Zyban has side effects, some serious and occaisionally fatal, and it does not help with the habitual or psychological addiction to smoking, which are very important. See -Ways to Stop Smoking,- at the website below.
cigarette smoking is very addictive and quitting is as hard as quitting heroin, your body goes through withdrawal and one of those symptoms is depression...welbutrin is an anti-depressant...it helps those that a near and dear to you stay alive!!!
Welbutrin (and similar anti-depressants) increase the levels of seratonin in the brain, which helps a depressed person to feel more happy. It also can calm someone who is anxious, which is when a lot of smokers will light up. I quit smoking without even trying just because I was on an anti-anxiety medication. For some people it works, and for some it won-t. You do have to be careful with any kind of drug, though - especially ones that trigger the brain.
My understanding is wellbutrin is an antidepressant, but it also has the unexpected side effect of helping people quit smoking. (marketed under the name -zyban-). Check the link below for more information.

If you had a planned date to quit smoking cigarettes, would a change in brands support your quitting efforts? -

If you had a planned date to quit smoking cigarettes, would a change in brands support your quitting efforts? -

Like if I were to say I want to quit next Friday. Since many cigarette companies put specific chemicals and specific amounts of chemicals to keep you addicted to that brand, would changing brands be wise for that weak to sort of lean off of the other addictive substances.

I guess the only problem is you can open yourself to a larger array of chemicals to become addicted to.
Absolutely not.....the tobacco companies put addictive substances in every cig made.

I thought the same thing so started smoking cigars and guess what??????
I think the only way to do it is to not smoke at all anymore. I don-t think there-s anything wrong with using Nicotine gum, or the drug Chantix to help you, but switching really doesn-t accomplish anything. It-s not just the nocotine that you have a problem with, it-s the activity of smoking, and everything you do that you associate with it (After a meal, when you first get up in the morning, while driving etc.)
If you live in Canada (I don-t know about the US) you can buy from the reserves, technically you have to be native but they don-t care, there aren-t many chemicals is those, and they are disgusting after you-ve been smoking a certain brand. Try changing from menthol to normal, or normal to menthol, it really throws off your smoking patterns.
100% no - a change in brand would be no help at all - in fact it could prove to be a disaster as you might actually prefer the newer choice of brand!

Once you-ve set a date stick to it - clear out all the ashtrays and lights etc and fire up your willpower. once you quit smoking you-ll never regret it!

Id like to quit smoking. Again! Any tips on what worked for you? ? -

I quit for years when I found out I was having a baby but started back up. I quit for a little while with the patch. I may try that again. I just want to see what has worked for others. Please do not answer if you are currently smoking hahahhaha Thanks
I began smoking at the age of 15 and finally quit for good at the age of 57 (a year ago), when I was at a pack a day. Even tho- all the experts say you have to go cold turkey, I think that just increases the craving. This is how I did it. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I only smoked half of it. So, I immediately cut my intake in half. After a few weeks of doing that (gives your body time to adjust to less nicotine), I would only take about 4 puffs, put it out and save it for the next craving. After a few weeks of that, I went to 2 puffs, then one puff (where one cigarette could last me a day or two). My body gradually got used to doing without the nicotine and I got to a point where I said, -when this pack is done, I-m not buying anymore-. That was a year ago. Recently, I stayed with my son, who smokes, and took a drag off his cigarette. I didn-t like the taste and it hurt my throat. If I can do it, you can do it, because I loved smoking!!!
I am currently in my sixth attempt to quit smoking. Smoking is like alcoholism... once a smoker, always a smoker.

This time, I have been using the electronic cigarette. So far, it has been great. I am currently still smoking real cigs, but notice the closer I get to my quit date and the more and more I use my e-cig... the more and more the real thing tastes nasty. Almost metallic. I don-t find myself craving a cigarette because I can literally puff on my e-cig where ever I want.

I find that I am addicted to the action. So the e-cig seems to be working for me. The patch did for awhile, but even when the nic was out of my system... I just wanted to partake in the action of smoking.

There are even different strengths of nicotine so you can step down. You can also choose flavors. (vanilla is delicious) The e-cig is a smoking alternative, not a proven quit method. However, many have found that it works so if you are serious... go hang out at the e-cig forums and you will learn quite a bit.

I know you had asked for non-smokers and hopefully, by December 22nd I will be one... well... at least a non-traditional smoker for the time being. Good luck! You-ve done it before so you know you can do it again!
I basically switched habits. Now I get my nicotine fix and I get to enjoy the same action of smoking but I am not hurting myself or anyone else. With this, you use it just like a cigarette, it-s electronic, no smoke, ashes or smell, and it-s a water vapor you inhale that contains only nicotine none of the nasty stuff. You can use it anywhere and it-s so much better for you. For me it was an easy switch.
Id like to quit smoking. Again! Any tips on what worked for you? ? -

Where can I get a drug to stop smoking in South Africa?
u must have a strong will
HI Boy...
congratulations on your decision to quit..unfortunately i don-t know about drugs in south africa, but i wanted to let you know there is help available online..

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
I do know that you need a strong mindset for it. And that works all the time. And there are also non smoking aids like the gum, patch, and lozenges. As well as doing something like typing, working out, reading, etc to keep yourself busy and not thinking about wanting a smoke.
Don-t use a drug to quit smoking. Some of them, like Chantix, can be very dangerous. You can use nicotine gum to help, though. Also, exercise and do deep breathing to relax. That will help a bit, though it-s still going to be hard no matter what.
Why would you need a drug?
Stop buying them and you-ll stop smoking.
If you don-t have any you wont be able to smoke.
It-s mind over matter.
you don-t need drugs, just eat one dozen eggs in the morning, one do zen eggs at lunch and a dozen eggs at dinner, during six months and let me know how it went
You-d have to order online, and check the by-laws in your area to make sure it-s not banned (it is in some places in the US):
http://greensmoke.com/4045.html

Get Zyban from your local chemist. You will need your doctor to prescribe it though, as there are minor side effects

I quit smoking.... when will the cravings go away? -

Its been about a week now. I broke down on the first, second and third days and had ONE cigarette near the end of the day. I-ve been totally smoke free since Saturday. I also quit caffeine too !!!
wow nicotine free since saturday... that-s a big deal, congrats!!! the good news is that cravings do in fact go away, the bad news is that its not immediately.. however the longer your away from smoking, they will be less intense, and not as often.on occasions i crave now after 5 years, but its more like a random thought than a true craving.. good luck on your quit!!!

actually support groups teach a number of ways to deal with cravings.. one of my favorites is known as the 5 d-s..

1 Distract.. for instance you cant smoke while washing dishes

2 Delay ( i don-t need one now).. if you always delay you wont smoke.

3 Discuss.. you did that by posting this question.. people in support groups call each other, post, or share in meetings

4 Deep breathe.. most smokers don-t breathe deeply except when inhaling.. deep breathing is relaxing, and clears the lungs

5 Drink water.. washes out toxins, as well as relieving cravings..

the good news is that i now have been quit for over 5 years.. i quit trying to quit alone, and joined a support group.. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally and on line.. on line voice meetings are as close as your computer, and you can attend while still smoking, before actually attempting a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck, there is simply no wrong way to quit!!

First of all: good on you! You-ve done it!
Here-s a little info that might help you further.
The real physical withdrawal symptoms from nicotine are nothing to worry about, the problem is in your head. Theoretically the symptoms will leave within 72 hrs. If you still have withdrawals after that, it-s due to mental fabrication - because you thought you would have them. Nicotine is very addictive, that-s true, and that means you will remain addicted for life, but the (real) symptoms disappear as the nicotine leaves your body (in 72 hrs, most of it actually in just 24).
Consider also: Besides the fact that the physical withdrawal symptoms from nicotine addiction don’t
last very long, they are ridiculously insignificant! They really are.
It’s not like you have to deal with cold shivers or vomiting or the sweats. It’s really just a little anxiousness or restlessness… It’s nothing! It is only your mind that makes any pangs significant, if you focus on them. Get it! They are there, yes, but don’t blow them out of proportion. You can quite easily override them completely.
The reason most people have problems with this is because they believe they will miss smoking - they are getting something out of it and hence they are giving something up.
What that means for you is this: You have to change you mindset about the whole smoking thing. Be glad you don-t have to do that anymore - that you have gotten rid of this filthy addiction. Never think you miss it - that-s what makes it hard. But instead be happy, content and proud that you-ve done it. Focus exclusively on the positives. You-ve done a great thing!
Admittedly, that would have been easier to sort out before you quit, but there is no reason why you can-t still do it now. Just be happy with your decision - and that-s that!
CONGRATS! Why not try quitting one thing at a time though, caffeine and ciggs! Damn! You have more will power than me!
Anyways, the physical cravings usually go away after a week, then you just have to deal with the emotional aspect.

Why are some people able to quit smoking cold turkey? Im using nicotine replacement gum and it is still hard.? -

You have to determine what you are really addicted to. Is it truly the nicotine or is it the action?

I am/was addicted to the action. If you are interested, try the electronic cigarette. You can save nearly half per year, still get your nicotine (or not if you use no nicotine cartridges), and take care of the addiction to the action.

I tried both the patch and the gum and was successfully miserable for about 8 weeks. After all of the nicotine was out of my system on the patch, I still found myself reaching for a pack of smokes.
I tired everything, gum, patches, hypnosis, inhalers, acupuncture, everything, nothing worked until i went cold turkey.

The thing about cold turkey was that it was bloody terrible, but over faster, every single day, every HOUR I was further away from smoking and that doesn-t happen with the replacements, you NEVER get enough nicotine to kill the craving, but always have SOME in your system and the -stopping- period lasts for months and months before you are nicotine free.

I know these methods work for millions, but for me, cold turkey was the only way.

(I cried every single day for the first 5 weeks or so lol, it was brutal, but worth it)
I am still smoking and have for sixty years now. I wish I had an answer for you. I went through Smokenders twice 20 years ago. Smoking was not recognized as a serious addiction then and I assiduously dealt with all the -psychological- aspects of my habit. I come from a family replete with alcoholism and I don-t drink at all! When I was in the Smokenders programs I saw many men who simply QUIT, cold turkey and without great complaint. I DO think it is much harder for women and it may have something to do with the extra fat cells that we carry in our makeup. I think somehow the nicotine may be harder for women to purge from their systems - taking longer and thus making withdrawal more difficult.

Also years ago the gum was by prescription only and doctors and dentists would only give you a prescription for ONE box. Even then I would say the gum was better than the smoking. I feel it is the components in the smoke that is much more harmful to your body and lungs than the nicotine, although that is undoubtably the addicting component.

I hope you will persevere in your efforts as the pain and suffering right now will pass and you will be free of the addiction soon.
You just have to get to the point where you-re disgusted with cigarettes. I recently quit. I had to just tell myself that they are nasty and expensive. I don-t go outside with the smokers at work now either so I-ve stayed out of a lot of gossipy drama. I have asthma too, so I-m saving money on Claritin now too because I don-t have to take it as often. I-m actually losing weight now. I gained 10 pounds when I quit, lost it and I-m still going with the weight loss. I can jog further and more intensely. I feel a lot better.
Try out some effective, simple and drug-free methods to quit smoking naturally. Try to review some companies that provide products that will help you to quit smoking naturally without any drug medication that could lead to negative long-term effects for the rest of your life. Good luck.
I used to smoke 200/day. Used to smoke even while eating. I used to get up at night to smoke.
Quit cold turkey in 1967 and never smoked again.

Fear was the key.
The American Surgeon General-s report, the study report of the Royal School of Physicians (UK) and the obituary of the Time correspondent written by himself two days before he died of lung cancer (The last line - it is too late for me, may not be for you) were all published in March 1967.

I quit on 21st March 1967 5-30 pm.
Great question - but who knows?
My Dad always tells how in the 1970-s when he used to smoke, he walked into a room and lit a cigarette and saw that he had two other ones going at the same time in the living room. At that point he said, -This is ridiculous-, and quit at that very moment never to smoke again.

I guess when I have trouble breaking a habit, I always go back to that. He-s much stronger than me, lol - but it helps to know that sometimes we complicate things and like to believe we don-t have the ability to stop something that we-re in complete control over.

Did that help you? Probably not. But I guess sometimes it-s mind over matter. Good luck. :-)
The degree of addiction depends on many factors, including genes. Some people don-t get addicted at all, others mildly or moderately, some can never stop.

Quit smoking book that works? -

I was told about a book that helps you quit smoking. The author encourages you to smoke while you are reading it but it-s supposed to work..Does anyone know the book or authors name?
Smoking while reading a stop smoking books makes perfect sense. You are constantly reading about smoking so it is natural that you will get cravings at this time.

If the book tells you to stop now than you will only get frustrated and throw it away. My partner and I have our own stop smoking system and we suggest to keep smoking while reading through it. Check it out if you are at all interested.

No, but you can try nicotine patches or gum or pills,
IDK. But just because it works for some it may not work for you. So don-t get too disappointed

for those of you that have smoked in the past how did you quit? i want my husband to quit. i know he will say it-s not easy and i don-t understand but i want to buy something and hope he uses it.
I stopped putting cigarettes in my mouth and lighting them.. And was really short tempered with people for about a month.
Well it started with me not wanting to smoke at all anymore. Then once I thought it hard to stop, I asked God multiple times for His help. I wanted to quit but it was so hard...He worked on me and in me until the thing was finished. It-s finished thank GOD!!! :D Sometimes people need strength beyond themselves. However it happens though, I hope your husband can quit for his sake as well as yours!
i had this problem with my ex-boyfriend... you really cant make them quit.. they have to do it on their own. you picked him and you should have known thats the person he is... if he loves you and sees that it hurts you (regardless of whether you can come up with a specific answer as to why he should quit) then he needs to quit...

you shuld have him go to the doctor.. they can perscribe things that work better than over the counter stuff
I quit cold turkey.

Wasn-t easy.

I was smoking 2 1/2 packs a day when I quit!

You really have to want to quit to be successful.

I used some small hard candies to help.

I kept them in the same pocket as I kept my cigarettes. It gave me something to reach for and something to do with my hands when I was craving.

It-s been 22 years. The scary part is that I feel I could go back in a minute. When you quit, never ever ever ever take another drag.

You can-t make someone else quit if they don-t want to. It will be a fight you will never win.
I know I struggle with quitting all the time. I go through periods where I wont smoke, but then I give into temptation. I know I am a strong person that is why its so frustrating that I can-t quit. Then I started talking my therapist about it one day and realized sometimes you have to remember why you started to figure out why you cant stop. For me I started smoking 3 years ago when i found out the truth about how my father died. Ever since I smoke as a way to relieve, stress, depression, and anxiety although smoking has a negative affect on all those things. But somewhere in my mind I see that stick as a security blanket, thats why its hard. I quit for awhile, but when my friend was murdered a few months back I started again. Im like a child with a blanket. Basically what Im saying is his addiction could be linked with something deep down inside, so have the long grueling emotional talk because at least its a starting point. I know to quit I have to fight my demons also... Also he should see his doctor...
It is all in his head. If he has a strong powerful mind, it is easy. Gum, a lot of gum is also helpful.
it-s all in backbone ,if u have u can stop it just like me,i was smoking very much and i stoped it by my backbone
I never smoked
It-s not as easy as saying that. You have to be in the right mindset.

For me personally, I used patches for about a week then went cold turkey. I still get cravings after 6 months but I am able to overcome them. They are also well and truly few and far between.

I guess I could also give you the advice of acknowledging your weak points and figuring out ways to overcome them. For me, it was when I was bored, after a meal or when I finished something like an assingment aswell. I just had a glass of water to get my mind off the cravings and help them pass a lot easier.

You also have to remember: you can-t MAKE someone quit, they have to make the choice themselves.
The Lung Association gave a presentation at my workplace. They brought a big jar with a real lung in it. They said it was a lung of a heavy smoker. Well, it was so GROSS, I went home and took my cigarettes and threw them in the trash. I-ve not smoked since. To this day I can still that blacktar on the lung.

How can I convince my son to quit smoking.? -

How can I convince my son to quit smoking.? -

You cannot. All you can do is to inform him of the dangers. Inform him of the cost. A one pack a day habit at nearly $5 a pack costs over $1800 per year for one (365 days times $5 per day = $1825). It will cause cancer. Take him to talk with some people who have lung cancer and Emphazima from smoking. Make him see what they have to go through all because of cigarettes. In the end, it is his choice, make it an informed one.
Lung cancer is the worse type of cancer to have.
There is only a 5% survival rate.
The number one cause of lung cancer is smoking.
80% of lung cancer patients will develop a brain tumor within five years.
Lung cancer is hard to prevent because the symptoms of it are something people ignore...cough, sputum....
Once you find out you have lung cancer there is a 75% chance that is has already spread from the lung to other places on the body.
Only 20% off all lung cancer patients qualify for surgery...and even after having surgery your survival rate only goes up to 15%.

Take him to a cancer treatment center let him talk to some of the patients...

Having lung cancer is not a good way to go...you can-t breathe, you can-t do anything, your out of breath after 2 seconds of activity. And the treatment you have to undergo isn-t any better. You have to deal with all the symptoms and side effects..such as loss of taste buds, burnt skin.......
You cannot, he has to want to do it. Then education comes into play.
I-m not really sure, but you can try showing him pictures of the effects of smoking in his body.
Let him watch an open chest surgery of a patient who is a long time smoker. He might be disgusted or maybe even horrified of such scene, and that is effective. Also, you can get him an ashtray of a shape of a lung. So everytime he puts out a cigarette, he can visually see how black that ashtray is getting.

I don-t know how old your son is, but I-m assuming that your son is at least a teenager. He probably thinks smoking is cool, pressured by his friends, of gets his influences from other sources. That does not mean that you can be where ever he is, so you have to talk to him about this and educate him about the cons of smoking. Being dramatic by showing a little emotion won-t hurt either. Good luck
Tell him it-s a turn off....it makes you smell bad and nobody over 16 really thinks anybody is cool who smokes anyway. And it-s always annoying when the smokers are hacking in the middle of class...I-m in college and that-s so annoying.
If he is smoking since long than it is easy to convince him. Get his X Ray AP view of chest. It will show a lot of Patches in Lungs Due to Bronchitis. Also take x ray of some non smoker at the same time - same place with the same doctor - machine. Than ask him why their are patches in his lung - no Patches on non smoker-s Lung? What will happen in longer run if he keeps on smoking? I think he will come on the right track.

please give me all the tips. How much trouble you had in your life. How much did you smoker. Do you still have craving. How is your life now being a non smoker.
I smoked around 4 or 5 pack of 30-s a week. I tried cold turkey, patches etc but found I was too moody and got upset very quickly so I would end up taking it back up. I went the to doctors 9 months ago and got -Champix- tablets. I had no side effects at all besides feeling a little nausea straight after taking the tablet occasionally. Within 14 days I-d given up smoking, simply because a) you don-t feel like a smoke because there-s nothing there to tell you to have it - b) the smoke had no effect at all - no taste, nothing. Right now (9 months on), it honestly feels like I never smoked before, I-ve never had a craving even after stopping the 12 week course of tablets. My understanding is that -Champix- is the only smoking aid that stops the cravings because it blocks that part of the brain that is asking for nicotine. I also live in a household with 4 other smokers and it hasn-t crossed my mind to pick up a smoke even in really stressful situations. The only time that is was difficult was over the Christmas period when I had a few days of drinking, because you kind of know that usually you-d be smoking, but that was a mental thing, not a craving need to actually have a smoke. Its brilliant.
i quit by looking at the amount of money i spent over the amount of time i had spent smoking and decided on a number of better things i could use it for. my quality of a life as a non-smoker hasnt really changed, but people have noticed. i rarely have cravings but i have a very strong bit of will power so i can get away from things easily.

i recommend that you shouldnt try to stop your addiction with a different one, find something about it that turns you off. if you can trick yourself into thinking its a negative thing you-ll never want to see it again
Cold turkey ... the only way. I was teaching a martial arts class. One day after an exhausting drill, my students regained their breath before me. When I walked out of the class I threw the cigarettes in the trash ... in front of the students. Anytime I had the craving ... I remembered the difficulty I had breathing and reminded myself of the struggle that lung cancer patient face. Yes .. my sister (a non smoker) lost that battle.
I tried all the medical options but none of them worked. After 15 years of smoking and many failed attempts it was tootsie pops that worked. I went through a box of 100. Everytime I wanted a smoke I had one of those. It gave me the same type of oral satisfaction as smoking. Unfortunately I ended up with 3 cavities on one side of my mouth but it was better than the thought of possibly getting cancer or lung disease. It-s been almost 8 years now and I am smoke free. I can-t even stand the smell of smoke now. You also have to treat it like alcoholism. Not even a drag ever again.
Good luck!
I quit cold turkey after college. I moved back in with my parents and knew my mother would drive me insane with her nagging if I smoked.
Of course when my brother moved back in she let him smoke. 20 years later he still does. I used to think he was the lucky one but he can-t quit.
just made up my mind went cold turkey took 1 day at a time. i smoke close to 5 pack a day the cost help took close to a year to get over the craving good luck feel a lot better
My late uncle quit by eating sunflower seeds. He used to get big bags of them. They made his tongue raw but it worked.

I quit once for 5 1/2 yrs, but now have been smoking for 3 yrs. I know i need to quit, but it is so hard.
I used to smoke, the only way that I did it was pure willpower and mind over matter. You can do anything that you set your mind to, if you truly want it bad enough. So, go over again the reasons why you want to stop smoking, is it for yourself or for someone else? If it is for yourself, then you are already half way there. Also, while you are trying to quit, don-t put yourself into situations or environments where you are going to be tempted to smoke because other people are smoking. Last but not least, make sure you have the support of your friends and family. If you are trying to stop smoking, others should respect this and not smoke around you.
I had a lot of luck quitting a few occasions (the most recent about 6 years quit). I went with the nicotine patches, every day I-d put it on a little later and take it off a little earlier before bed. I also had lots of jolly ranchers candy for the hand to mouth motion. I-ve generally been able to wean off in under 2 weeks that way.

Good Luck!
there is a great internet place called www.stopsmokingcenter.net make sure you dont go to the one with the .com, i have used it and it has worked for me. it is interactive and psychs you up to do it beforehand.
cold turkey
Go see someone who can help you! Or try just not to do it! (eventhough it may be hard)
Ask your doctor for prescription choices. I think there are several that your doctor could prescribe that could help with the cravings and the anxiety but I can-t remember their names right now.
I strongly recommend the patch...At my work several of us quit at the same time. All of us who quit with the patch are now 5 months free of cigarettes! I smoked for 13 years, and a friend smoked for 35 YEARS! If we can do it, you absolutely can!
don-t take enough money for cigarretes, cos it damages the lungs and kidney plus it reduces your life span.
You can get into self-improvement classes.

I am reg smoker havin 10 cig in a day, like to quit smoking permanently, I tried Nicobate Patch and Chuing gum, both its does n-t works, how can i quit smoking..?

I am in Sydney Australia
Many smokers have successfully given up cigarettes by replacing them with new habits, without quitting -cold turkey,- planning a special program, or seeking professional help.
The following approaches include many of those most popular with ex-smokers. Remember that successful methods are as different as the people who use them. What may seem silly to others may be just what you need to quit - so don-t be embarrassed to try something new. These methods can make your own personal efforts a little easier.

Pick the ideas that make sense to you. And then follow through - you-ll have a much better chance of success.

PREPARING YOURSELF FOR QUITTING...

.Decide positively that you want to quit. Try to avoid negative thoughts about how difficult it might be.

.List all the reasons you want to quit. Every night before going to bed, repeat one of the reasons 10 times.

.Develop strong personal reasons in addition to your health and obligations to others. For example, think of all the time you waste taking cigarette breaks, rushing out to buy a pack, hunting for a light, etc.

.Begin to condition yourself physically: Start a modest exercise program; drink more fluids; get plenty of rest; and avoid fatigue.

.Set a target date for quitting - perhaps a special day such as your birthday, your anniversary, or the Great American Smokeout. If you smoke heavily at work, quit during your vacation so that you-re already committed to quitting when you return. Make the date sacred, and don-t let anything change it. This will make it easy for you to keep track of the day you became a nonsmoker and to celebrate that date every year.

Don-t buy champix or chantix. I started feeling weird the day I started it, three days later I attempted suicide out of the blue. Stay very very far away from this drug. Google chantix and suicide or go to the fda website. It is under investigation for suicide link since Nov. 20th and they have received over 5000 complaints already. Please Please do NOT take this drug!!!!!!!!
Stop buying cigarettes.
Cut your hands. :D

Was kidding.

Anyway, maybe you should start from reducing the amount of cigarettes you smoke per day. I think it might be impossible to go from 10 cigarettes to 0 per day.
Perhaps a search for -quit smoking- + -natural ways- might be of interest.

What are some tips that I can try to quit smoking? -

What has worked for you? What can you suggest for me?
when I stopped smoking I first locked myself in my room for two days and I screamed and cried. than I had to go back to my normal life, back to school where I-m physically very busy. I told all of my teachers and my schoolmates what-s going on so I got a lot of support. I stayed away from places where I smoked before ( which was hard because I smoked in my room) and yes I would comfort myself with chocolate which really helped. if you focus on the bad stuff of smoking and good stuff of not smoking it will help as well. I also looked for some support at yahoo answers just because it-s great to hear how much good you-re doing for yourself at that time. tomorrow it will be 2 months since I quit and it is still hard but trust me it is worth it and I would never go back to it.

good luck
You can try Nicorette or those patches that you put on any part of your body.

Hope This Helps!

How much damage is being done when I try to quit smoking, then smoke again? -

I know smoking tabacco is bad and I-m trying to quit. I just wanted to know if I quit and then have a relapse, am I doing worse damage to my lungs because they-ve had some time to heal and then I go traumatize them again?
No, I don-t think you are doing extra harm. It is probably good to give your lungs a break from time to time.

Is it really that difficult to quit smoking? -

Is it really that difficult to quit smoking? -

What is it that makes it difficult exactly? I don-t mean to sound stupid or put any smokers off but I really don-t know...I-ve never been addicted to anything.
It could be difficult to quit smoking it just depends on how your body is affected by the nicotine in the cigarette i kno this guy he can smoke a cigg. and stop instantly...
For me it wasn-t, but I guess I was a -casual smoker- and was never really addicted (according to my husband.) But my father smoked for 10 years and then just one day decided to quit and that was it, no problem. My husband has serious problems trying to quit. He has tried over a dozen times. He tried again last month and hasn-t smoked in 5 1/2 weeks! (well he had 1/2 of one once.) For him it isn-t the nicotine that had him hooked (although that didn-t help), it was the habit. He didn-t feel right not smoking. He had trouble waking up with out one (that was the nicotine). He would get super stressed with out smoking. He used smoking as an excuse to step out and take 10 minutes for himself away from all the hassle of his life (mostly work). I kept telling him he could do that with out a smoke. He only quit this time because I told him I wouldn-t have a baby if he was still smoking. He-s never lasted this long before so I-m proud of him.
Back when I smoked, I would get really bad coughs when I needed a cigarette (which was like very 45 min to an hour). As soon as I smoked one, I would quit coughing. I couldn-t even go to college because I had to leave all the time for a cigarette. It was a big problem for me. And everyone would look at me because I couldn-t stop coughing. That is what made it so addictive for me. Another thing is that it becomes a habit and you do it because you-re bored and feel lost without it. That was my case. But I got hypnotized to quit, and it worked for me. I haven-t smoked since.
Since they are physically and psychologically addicted to the nicotine, they are constantly reminded of it. And with how many people around smoke, it doesn-t make it any easier. Plus, when they haven-t been smoking they can get really irratable, and shake.
If you haven-t ever been addicted to anything there is no way you could possibly understand what it is like to quite smoking. It-s hard to quite addictions, but especially those involving addictive chemicals.
that depends on the person, i-m not a smoker but a lot of people around me are, and some have succeded quiting the first time and didn-t have any problems, but some quit and started again.-
it depends on the person-s will.-
GET OFF OF THEM PLZ my mom has been in the HOSPITAL for almost 5 months because of them! They are your enemy!! Good Luck and you will be in my prayers
No its not that hard. There is a new drug out called Chantix.
U can quit in a month. Ask u r doc about it.
it is tough..ive tried to quit 4 times in my 18 years of smoking whereas i quit pot and drinking pretty easily

How do you quit smoking cigarettes under 18? -

My boyfriend is trying really hard to quit smoking, but he-s under 18 and can-t use nicorettes or anything. What should he do?
It-s really hard to stop smoking. You have to create a plan that includes some sort of replacement for the time you spend smoking.

Here are some tips that helped me stop smoking:

1. When you crave a cigarette, take a deep slow breath instead. This often tricks your body into thinking you-re smoking.

2. Take a brisk walk instead of having a cigarette.

3. Get a bag of lollipops. This will help you get over the oral fixation of smoking.

4. Tell people you-ve stopped smoking. That way they can offer support.

5. Throw away your cigarettes! Don-t keep them around as a temptation.

Good luck to your boyfriend!
Well.. I think he should tell his parents about it.
He should join a nonsmoker teen group thing at school.

-12 to 18-year-olds get free nicotine replacement therapy (patches, sprays, gum) on the NHS..

hope this helps.
the best thing is to find something to take his mind off of it. boredom leads to temptation. find a way to occupy him :D take away the cigarettes he has, promise him something sexy if he can make it a week. if he can make it a week, he can make it a month trust me. addiction is a choice. F*ck what people say.

All have a wealth of information on smoking cessation aids, tips and techniques for quitting, support, etc.

Good luck to you!!!
One of my friends successfully quit, after a few attempts. He finally found something to really motivate him to quit (health for himself and his family, saving money). Then he used stuff such as nicotine gum, as well as getting a strong support team (family, friends, church affiliation). Had to start finding other habits to do instead. He did gain a little weight, but started exercising more and watching his diet, so not too bad.

Another person got motivated because of constant pressure from his family and also because he wasn-t allowed to smoke in or around the house whenever he visited the grandkids. Also, even not allowed to kiss them if he smelled like cigarettes, -cause the grandson had bronchiolitis (breathing problem). He took the way of slowly decreasing and finally stopped completely when he had grandkids.

There are clinics and hotlines for smokers trying to quit, and support groups. But I would say the main thing is to find your motivator, and make sure you start making new good habits.

P.S. if all your buddies/family members are smokers, it will be VERY difficult. Maybe find a buddy who wants to quit just as much as you, so you can support each other, and encourage when you get weak.

I am a smoker and smoke about 1 pack per day. I really want to quit but I just cant seem to stop. How did you quit please detail me in. Also im not for taking any meds or nic gums or patch I want to do it nautral Please help me out.
Like the other two posts. I quit cold turkey 5 years ago. I set a date, told all my friends and also asked them for support. Before I knew it, I had a week, then a month and now I am 5 years without a cigarette. It is hard. No doubt about it. But if you truly want to quit, you will. Find other things to occupy your time. Go for a walk, read a book, suck on hard candy. Once I made to it day 8, I was home free. Good luck to you!
Hello
Going natural i think is the best way but maybe the hardest way and requires a strong will and mind

People here tell their success stories on how they managed to quit smoking
you might find some motivation there as well, along with the knowlege that youre not the only fighting this addiction

Good Luck
I smoked many many manymany years ago when I was quite young. One week I caught a cold and coughed up mucus out of my lungs. I spat it out and examined it. It was full of flakes of black ash. I thought -NO.- but I stopped smoking and as the days went on the black ash diminished in content and then disappeared.
I feel you pain brother i quit smoking yesterday for the 3rd time in a month!

its dam hard but you-ve won half the battle by WANTING to quit.
I just quit cold turkey about 3 weeks ago, it-s been hard but I have strong will power. I hope you do too, because you-ll need it.
you should stop by taking one less every day and before you know it you-ll stop.
go cold turkey..gonna be painful but its the only way to really quit

Extra always lasts for a longtime...Winterfresh lasts a long time also
Depending on your how much you chew vs suck, how much flavor vs stiffness matters to you - you need to try them out. Also try hard candies (sugar free) and deep breathing exercises (excellent aid). Buy a stick of licorice at the health store (a twig, not the candy), and see if you like keeping that in your mouth, or a toothpick. Eventually reduce your mastication (sets off digestive fluids, wears teeth, gums, etc), but not anytime soon. Remember that if you fall off the wagon you can get back on and still succeed. If you-re rich, contact Dr. David Sachs in Palo Alto, CA for nicotine replacement therapy that is much more expensive and effective than the gum. The gum, if you can afford it, can be very helpful. If you chew only occasionally and keep it -parked- along the gum, eventually you will get withdrawal relief. However, it takes awhile. For example, smoking a cigarette shoots a couple humdred milligrams of nicotine to the brain through the carotids in a couple of seconds, the gum just a few in 30-45 minutes. For thousands of dollars with someone like Dr. Sachs (did the clinical trials for the FDA), you can get more like 20 milligrams in a couple of minutes. The withdrawal is real, with the pleasure cascade derailed, so don-t feel bad about asking for an anti-depressant, since you are suddenly lower on some neurotransmitters that are part of the habit that kicks off some of your neurotransmitters for calming, focusing, feeling fun. You will eventually adjust, but its a tough row to hoe until you do, and will power is only one of the things going on - good for you to try quitting, and even if it doesn-t work this time, you will learn tricks to make it work next time. Those who succeed usually try more than once. Go for it!
Stride is good.

Also, I like altoids mints. I quit using Commit and when I came time to wean off of those I found the Altoids a very good replacement.
Now, oddly enough, I don-t find myself craving ciggarettes. I now crave Committ lozenges. LOL.

Congratulations!!
if you can find it, get Dentyne Ice soft chew gum.
the dark blue package (idk the name of the flavor) is the best but they all last forever.

the Dentyne regular gum is a great second.

Stride
Stride is best. The commercials are true the flavor is very long lasting.

How soon after quitting smoking does the shortness of breath go away? -

How soon after quitting smoking does the shortness of breath go away? -

This question is for former smokers. If a person stops smoking, how soon afterward will the shortness of breath go away if that person is otherwise healthy and fit? Also, how soon will taste return?
First of all, if you just quit smoking, CONGRATULATIONS. You did yourself a big favor.

You should start expecting your taste and smell to start improving after 48 hours. This process will be gradual but after 9-14 days your sense of taste will return to normal. Your smelling ability will wait till your cough clears up. This could take up to 4 weeks, depending on how much do your lungs exercise.

Shortness of breath will start getting better 72 hours after your quit but it depends on your activity level. If you do yoga ( kapalbhati -
http://www.how-to-quit-cigarettes.com/yo…
) you could see great results in less than 10 days. Alternatively vigorous running, jogging, and cardio will help your lungs clear up soon and your breathing will become -better- between 5-7 days). It might take up to a month for a fit person who exercises regularly to get back his/her breathing to normal.

The above values may vary based on your weight, the number of cigarettes you smoked every day before quitting and the number of years you smoked before you quit.

Just remember, once you start feeling better, use that as your motivation to stay smoke free.

( I smoked for 18 years and quit when I was 30 which means I smoked for more than half my age. After quitting I realized that I never had a reason to smoke, it only did bad to me and all the good things like increasing concentration, releasing stress, etc was only BS and lies that I told myself. My concentration is way more than it ever was, I am a lot happier, more energetic and stress free, ever since I quit smoking. So once you quit, there actually is no reason for you to go back to smoking. THINK AGAIN.)
Can-t really say, as I started exercising and stuff at the same time, and I wasn-t exactly measuring my shortness of breath every day. I wouldn-t recommend quitting with the expectation of feeling better soon -- a watched kettle never boils, as they say, and you-ll probably get frustrated and go back to smoking.

All I can tell you is that I felt better sooner than I expected, and that I-ve always been glad I quit.
That will depend on whether or not there is permanent damage to your lungs. If you have smoked long enough to have emphysema, you might always have some shortness of breath. Otherwise, you should start seeing improvements in just a month or two. Taste can take longer but it should be back within a year.
You-re going to be short of breath if you are just starting a workout program anyway. Dunno how long it takes to come back. But I-m a smoker, and I run 3 miles a day, no problems. Just do what you gotta do, don-t blame the cigarettes. Quit if you want to (you should), but shortness of breath isn-t from the cigarettes, it-s from you working past your ability.
I am on day 7 of quitting. I have noticed that my smell is super sensitive and that food does seem to have more flavor but it does not seem to be that much of a difference.

I have read that it takes different amount of time for different people. Exercise helps and breathing exercises

I am also using a support group that I love.
depends on the person, how much they smoked...
it took my hair dresser almost 2 yrs. (she smoked for 20 yrs...) it took my boss 18 mnths. (she died from lung cancer) it took my mother-in-law about 2 yrs (then she got cancer and COPD..she-s still alive though, but stuck in the house on oxygen 24/7)
My parents both died before THEY stopped. (my dad was 48 yrs old by 10 days, my mother 54.)
I smoked 2 packs a day for over 20 years before I quite 5 years ago...

I am still out of breath... you see, I waited to long.... I now have COPD and have to use oxygen 24/7, but I-m hanging in there....

But to answer your question... about six weeks before you notice any real difference in breathing.... and my taste has, for the most part, stayed the same.

GOOD LUCK !!!
in about a year all the effects should be minimal or unnoticeable. it depends on how much you smoked and for how long.
God bless and congrats on stopping.
It takes months for me to get better for shortness of breath, but it-s getting better. Stop smoking will stop further damages to your body, it-s TRUE. Good luck!
Took me about two three weeks. I can ride my bike for hours now and not feel like I am going to die cause I can-t get enough air. I still need to train my lungs better after 5 years of killing my lungs!
about a year

How much harder is it for people who have quit smoking to resist the urge than someone who has never tried? -

I know that if you don-t start, you-ll never be addicted to it. But if you quit smoking, is the urge to smoke much greater, does it get easier as time passes, is it really possible to be free of the addiction, or will it stay, make life hard forever?
After 48 hours, the physical craving for nicotine is usually gone. The desire to smoke after that is psychological. So practice mind over matter.
im a non smoker so can only speak form a non-smoker point of view, though literally every other member of my family is and they have tried to quit so from my observation point its like letting go of someone special. no amount of -you-ll be healthier for it- will make it any easier (it will make you fitter) but its still just as hard to let go. for me its like missing something i never had, i don-t know what its like to have it so i can-t miss it, but i like coffee and i have a habit of biting my nails, they say its as clean as licking the toilet seat(my toilet is clean actually) but its a habit none the less and its really hard to break
Four years ago, I quit smoking after doing so for ten. It wasn-t easy at first, pacifying myself with other-s second hand smoke and wanting to buy a pack. Eventually, it got easier. Six months in, though, with things that were going on in my life, I wanted one and second hand smoke didn-t seem to be cutting it. Twice I was thisclose buying a pack. The first time, we were in New York City and the price of the cheap packs were about $5-- about $3 more than what I paid for my last pack. The second time, in the same month, I just talked myself out of it.

Now, I LOATHE the smell of smoke. I literally choke up and cease breathing when I smell it, even if it-s -just- on somebody-s clothes, which means it can be difficult to have a conversation with some people, including my husband-s sister, her husband, and my husband-s brother-s wife. I don-t- even like having my daughter-s 17-month-old daughter around them because I don-t want her to smell it and for her to breath in the poison.

Of course, there are some who have never smoked and, smartly, don-t have the urge to.
I used to smoke 1/2 pack a day and I just quit years ago cold turkey. I did have a few puffs here and there but I don-t want nothing to do with smoking at all now though. My father passed away from a pancreatic tumor from smoking and drinking alcohol for 40 some years. I didn-t wanna go the same path . My Dad was 57 years old young I think .
The urge to smoke doesn-t exist in people who aren-t addicted. If you have quit smoking, the urge to smoke decreases over time. It won-t always be a struggle. The time it takes to get over it varies from person to person.
How much harder is it for people who have quit smoking to resist the urge than someone who has never tried? -

i know it sounds stupid but ive been smoking for 2 years and i really want to stop. smoked like 10- 15 smokes a day.
i want to totally detox my body how do i do this?
hi,

Here are the best tips which I got from my friends who and me quit smoking the same way.

1. Most smokers don-t exercise. Begin by doing so. Begin a religious work out at an expensive gym. The money you pay for the membership will keep you from leaving and after a while you will enjoy the health benefits. You can start from a half an hour program of 2 to 3 times a week and then increase it to 5 to 6 times over a few months. However, seek advice from a physician before joining one.

2. Visit the dentist and get your teeth polished. After the stain removal, you will like the way you smile! Another incentive to quit. Plan to keep your teeth this way.

3. Visit the smoking area in your club or office and search for another person who is trying to quit. Two heads are better than one and this quitting buddy will be a big help for motivation and companionship.

There are many more. The thing is that you have to observe other smokers and do that they don-t

Good luck
Throw any cigarettes that you have away any don-t buy anymore. I smoked for about 5 years and that is what I did. My father did the same thing after smoking for over 30 years.

How do you sucessfully quit smoking and stay quit? -

How do you sucessfully quit smoking and stay quit? -

Quitting smoking is extremely difficult. The withdrawl makes us not want to, but we know the risks and we know that they are not worth it. For anyone who wants to end their nicotine addiction, check out www.stopsmokingcleveland.com. This is the MOST effective method on the market. It is 86% effective and the details of the program are on the website (no signing up or submitting your information).

I tried this program and it changed my life.
If you quit. You quit. It is very easy! Don-t lite one. Don-t chew either it is worse than smoking. The rest is all in the mind. If you get angry while quitting you are just looking for an excuse to light up. Nothing or no one can make you smoke only you can do that.
I have quit for 9 days now. I use 14mg nicotine patch and have found a lot of good advice and help at www.quitnet.com. I read a book by -Allen Carr- titled -Easy Way to Quit Smoking- which was very inspirational. I carry a little card with reasons why I want to quit and helpful hints to stay quit. I also have a small picture of a healthy lung and a diseased smoking lung which I carry with me as a reminder of lung cancer (you can get this off the internet). I chew gum and suck on short straws. I read a lot about not smoking and go to the quitnet for help.

You can quit for you, good luck and keep trying to quit. They say it gets easier to quit the more you try to quit.
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quite smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK!
cut off your fingers. its almost impossible to light up then
For me it has been mind over matter. I have kids now and I don-t want them to ever see me smoke and get the impression that smoking is okay. It-s hard though... I still think about smoking A LOT. You just have to try to find something to occupy your time that won-t let you smoke (I knit now). Also, when you-re having a bad moment or a bad day, remind yourself that tomorrow is another day... another day when you HAVEN-T had a cigarette! Reward yourself for not smoking.
The Patch, The Gum, and, most of all, Will Power. You can-t do anything if you don-t want to do it. You have to have the motivation more than anything.
The desire to quit should be greater than your desire to smoke!

It-s NOT easy.

But all the hype about NICOTINE DEPENDANCE is RUBBISH. There are NO severe withdrawal symptoms. Just a strong urge to smoke ... you have to feel miserable for a few days - NO OTHER WAY.

To help you along for the first week I suggest you take some tranquilzer tablets such as DIAZAPAM. Small doses two or three times a day.

Don-t try to ESCAPE from thinking or talking about SMOKING. DON-T BE AFRAID OG GIVING UP!

Try to AVOID the company of SMOKERS for atleast the first week.

DO NOT BOOZE during your first THREE MONTHS... you could become weka when you are drunk.

I KNOW ALL THIS BECUASE I ACTUALLY QUIT AFTER BEING A HEAVY SMOKER for 30 YEAR PLUS.... I smoked 60 a day till July 2003.

Now I simply ENJOY MY FREEDOM from slavery to tobacco. It-s a great feeling not always crave for a cigarette. No lousy taste in the mouth. No social embarrasment - in public places. So much more fun to be alive!

GOOD LUCK!
Realise that it is going to be difficult, know that it-s what you really want to even if your mind is trying to make up all kinds of excuses. Get help (patches, gum etc) if you think it will help. Be very prepared for times after your morning coffee, after a meal or when you-re out having a drink and maybe change your routine. I went cold turkey and ate sugarfree gum at those times I really craved it. If you quit then have a weak moment, don-t be hard on yourself realise what good you-ve done then pick up quitting where you left off.
ANYONE CAN DO IT IF I DID!!

I-m extremely short and haven-t his a spurt-i-m 15 and a late bloomer and just quit smoking after 2 years on and off, will my growth be permanently stunted?
Myth, No.

Glad you quit smoking though, Kicked a nasty habit.
Nah, that-s an old wive-s tale -- studies show that teens who smoke grow to within 1 cm of teens who don-t smoke, which if you look at a ruler is essentially the same.

At 15, you have significant growth ahead of you, so I wouldn-t worry much about your eventual height, but if you-re concerned, ask your doctor.
it wont stund your growth, how tall you will be is all dependant on your genes, you will definatly grow once you hit puberty, my brother went through the same thing, he didnt hit it until he was 16 and he has grown about 10 inches in 9 months! 13 is kinda young to smoke so it is a good thing you quit
No. Smoking doesn-t stunt growth. That is a myth.

Do I need the PATCH to quit smoking? -

I-ve smoked for 35 years and can-t quit long enough to save my life (pun). I-ve been able to quit three times for up to 2 years, but back to the pack.

What can I do, I-m tired of this smoking stuff.
I-d be a bit wary of chantix/champix (they-re the same thing, just sold under a different name in different countries), there are supposed to be some outright nasty side effects that some people get, stuff like mood swings, depression and suicidal thoughts that some people have acted on.

If I were going to give up smoking then I-d have a look at the Allen Carr method. It-s reportedly got a success rate about an order of magnitude higher than the patches do.
I heard of a new tablet out its called champix, it works on a part of the brain, you take them 3 a day and you keep on smoking and they say by the end of the first week you just dont want to smoke any more, ask your doctor about them, good luck.
Stop buying -em. That way, when you want one, you won-t have it.

Or just redefine -quitting.- You quit thirty times a day, don-t you? Keep up the good work!

You can quit smoking in 38 minutes and 13 seconds!

http://best-way-to-stop-smoking.info
I was playing tennis against a concrete wall every night feverishly and my lungs hurt. So I made a choice. Last smoke was 11:50pm 12-31-76.
Try chantix, I know it sounds crazy but I-ve seen it work for many people

I-ve finally convinced my husband to quit smoking, yay! I-m wondering if anyone here has tried hypnosis or acupuncture? He doesn-t want to try the patch or gum because he thinks the constant nicotine will make him sick (but I don-t think it-s constant, is it) Anyway, any one tried either of those?
Thank you so much!
november was 2 years for me. i tried the patches and if i kept them on over night i had CRAZY dreams and couldnt sleep, because the patch does give off constant nicotine. the gum however doesnt. he can just chew a peice when he gets a craving and thats it, no nictotine after he spits out the gum. i personally quit cold turkey after trying others and them not working. i convinced myself that the smell of smoke made me sick, and kind of tricked my brain into not smoking.
chantix for realll
10 months and still going I used the medication Chantix and only took it for three weeks and had no urges, I had mild nausea but it is liveable if you really want to quit. Good Luck!!!
I have quit for 6 years and still going. I have tried all the steps and assists but they didnt work for me. Instead I just ended up quiting cold turkey. Apparently when I quit, every time I wanted a cigarette, I would eat an ice cream (it-s how my mind made it a substitute and no i-m not fat from it) and my craving goes away. I think as long as you fill that void of wanting a cigarette with something else, then you can trick your mind into forgetting what it wanted.

If you really want to quit smoking do what I did. Buy the eCigarette. It works great, you still get to smoke and there is no tar, tabbaco, or smell. I have stopped in the past for even a year before and picked it back up when my dad was very ill. He has since died. Then I got a stressful job and did not quit. I want to quit. Cold turkey is how I did it before, but now it will not be as easy b/c I married a smoker. Are there any suggestions for the best patches or any other advice on how to help me out there. Thank you.

.Zyban is what helped me finally give up those darn cancer sticks! i had tried everything until Zyban was brought up by a co-worker who had quit smoking. Two days later I quit and have not had a smoke in over a year! I went to RemedyMeds.com. They have Overnight delivery so you can get started NOW! good luck dear.
If you go to the quitnet.com they will give you 8 weeks of free patches. They also give very good support and a lot of education on what your body will go through and how to lessen the withdrawls. Congratulation and don-t give up!
You could buy alot more gum and chew it every day before and after a meal and it should help!!!!
Ive tried patches, gum losenges, etc. Cold Turkey seems to be the best..After 72 hours the nicotine is flushed out and its much easier. The patch and all, adds nicotine to your system, making it easier for the first couple of days, but harder to make a clean break
Tell you hubby to go outside to smoke.better yet get him to quit with you
Get your spouse to quit with you. The more support you can have the better.

There is a program called smoke away that might help you.

After the nicotine is flushed frm your system, it-s all about habit. The habit of putting your hands by your lips and having something in your mouth. In this program, they give you stuff to put on your fingers that stinks so you wont want them around your nose. They suggest having cut up vegetables ready to chew on.

Avoid situations that you used to smoke at (at least for a while).

Good luck quitting, I hope it-s easy and your spouse will quit with you.
I found that the best way to quit smoking is to do it around people who are smoking. Otherwise you just start again when you are around them. I also found that I had to keep quitting because I fell off the proverbial wagon. Eventually I quit for good.
Good luck.
divorce your spouse it could save your life
Cold turkey is the way to go. Take a positive stand and throw
away your cigarettes and when your brain starts arguing with
itself, just shut it out - I dont smoke, I dont smoke, I dont smoke.
Just make the decision to do it and do it.
You have to just want to quit. Its never easy but its all about will power. Welbutron (avialable through your dr) can help greatly but its still about will power....good luck!
This is what worked for me but it is not recommended and I was a pack a day smoker.

Use 2 of the 24 mg patch for 1 day
Use 1 of the 24 mg patch for 1 day
Use 1 of the 24 mg patch for 1 day

Use the gum thereafter (not a whole piece maybe 1/5th of a piece) everytime your dying for a smoke.

If you dont have the above you can put a tiny bit of tobacco under your tounge to minimize cravings.
You went back to smoking because you could not handle stress. Learn to deal with stress and the smoking will stop. I submit that you didn-t want to quit the first time therefore; you quit for someone else.

So whenyou learn to deal with stress you will be happier with yourself you will quit forever.

I quit after 20 years of smoking and I live a very stressful life but I relieve my stress in other ways. (I like golf, music, and yardwork.)
Hi,
I really empathise with you, I quit my 20 a day habit in a pain-free way this time last year!
No stress, no cravings, no weight gain, no pills, patches or gums.
The program I followed was recommended by a friend and now boasts a 90% success rate and is 100% fully guaranteed - can-t say fairer than that

All the best..

Hi Katie

congratulations on your decision to quit.. its a biggie!!! as a matter of fact some folks do have success with both products.. these are generic products, often termed nrt-s (nicotine replacement therapy) most questions can be answered with the manufactures directions or the pharmacist at the store.. there is no wrong way to quit, its an individual thing..

statistics have shown that regardless of the method, participation in a support group greatly improves your chance of quitting.. myself after smoking for over 40 years, i have been quit now for over 5, and i give the credit to my participation, in a support group..

i attend Nicotine Anonymous meetings both locally, and on line.. on line voice meetings, are as close as your computer, and you are welcome to attend before attempting a quit..

I heard using both at the same time is good. But how about, when you really need a fag, think about the fact that it causes serious illnesses and early death, and think of your family and how you would rather be with them than be dead. You will regret it later if you don-t stop it now.

Choose another habit/hobby like, go to the gym - workout, keep yourself busy (study, play sports, etc). Some day you are going to quit because you at least thinking about it.
my doc told me to make a schedule for each day.
for example, smoke at 9 am, then 12-3-6-9pm....
do this for 1 week, then make it 4 hours apart and so on... works good
My husband quit on wellbuterin (generic for Zyban) and my grandma and sister in law both quit on commit. These are both prescription drugs.
I weened my way off after setting a quit date. Slowly but surely cut myself down on the intake of nicoteen to minimize the withdrawal symptoms.

Only smoke outside...and this includes your car. You will find that you will smoke less when it becomes inconvienent. When driving to work, get a cup of coffe or something to sip on to take the place of that cigarette you are use to smoking (yeah, that is still the hardest part).

Also, if you have a setback and smoke (or smoke alot after you begin to cut back) DON-T GIVE UP ON THE GOAL. It is only a set back, not the end of the world. So many people just give up. You will always want to smoke...it is with you for life...however as time rolls on, the cravings will be eaiser to ignor.

Get with your Doctor. There are so many things they can do to help....and they will be tripping over themselves to help. Also, check on the internet to see if your state has a quit help line. American Cancer Society: Call 1-800-ACS-2345 or

It is a war to quit. Sometimes you loose a battle, but don-t give up the war because of one, two or even ten screw ups. It is never too late to quit.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cold turkey.
because tapering off is long and hard.
you are stronger than the addiction.
you can beat it.
you can do it.
you can get through it.
get a support system.
and go cold turkey.
Thinking about how much cigaretts cost these days and the money that it could be used for.
COLD TURKEY is the only way. That is how I did it.
Watch the weight though, cause you will want to eat more.

Good luck
