How do you quit smoking pot? -

I have been a very big pot head for a very long time. i dont want to quit, but i need to know how. i know i should.
You just don-t buy it anymore. It isn-t physically addictive. You just stop doing it. No trick to it.
I would suggest you would first take notice of why you smoke it so much. Find the triggers that get you to smoke it. Is it because your home and bored? then get a hobby (play a sport, go for walks, do something) make it inconvenient for you to sit at home and smoke; become busy . Is it because the friends you hang around do it? don-t see your friends as much; make up an excuse to not see them on a day to see if you smoke that day. Watch yourself for awhile until you figure out in what condition causes you to want to smoke... Then try and avoid the trigger a few times and see if that works. If so keep doing it, if not then keep searching for the triggers.

That-s what I did to quit smoking cigarettes. It-ll be hard at first but keep trying you-ll quit if you really want to.
you will just have to decide not to smoke it anymore- you will also have to stop hanging around people that smoke it until you have overcome the withdrawal enough to not want to smoke it anymore. you will also have to figure out something else to do in your spare time so you are busy enough that you wont want to smoke up. good luck.
quit so you won-t get caught..... i just got caught, suspended from school, i-m pretty much on house arrest, i will have no life over the summer, i can-t be friends anymore with my best friends because my parents know we smoke. and it just screwed up my life, quit before there are some serious consequences! :) good luck
You just stop. Remove all trace of it and paraphernalia from your living quarters, car, etc. When you feel the urge, go do something...take a walk, talk to a buddy (who-s not a pot head), go swimming, etc. Physical activity will help working the stored THC out of your body. Good luck!
Inner Strength My Darling...Inner Strength!

Its Not That Hard! Just Gotta Have That -WILL- Power In You...If Not...It Means You-re Weak!

You-re Weak For EVERYTHING In Life!!
Stop buying it, and stop hanging out with people that smoke it all the time
Stop hanging out with other pot heads. Stop buying it. Stop lighting up. Find a new hobby.
you dont have to, just cut it down
Rehab
just stop. if you ever feel like you need to get ****** up, take a shot or something instead of a hit... lol.
Will power.
you dont.
just stop pulling money out of your wallet
god kids are dumb

i am trying to quit smoking weed and its really hard how can i do it and is it really possible to be addicted to weed ,also does NA work for weed? any one been in this situation ?
i smoked weed everyday in 2007 and about half way through 2008 and i would say yes, it is possible to get addicted to weed. what i did was start smoking less and less each week then smoke half as often as you do now then half as often as then and so on until you-re weed-free. i-ve been clean for the past 7 months. that might not sound like much, but it feels like a big deal to me. haha also, drink a lot of water while you-re started to smoke less.. it should help with the urge to smoke because, this is really gay.. but because it will feel sort of symbolic. it-s like you-re cleansing your body... i-m kind of a fag for saying that but that-s what it felt like for me ha
It-s basically impossible to become addicted to weed, but even if you somehow do get withdrawal symptoms they will be very brisk and mild.

What you are experiencing is psychological addiction. It can be a ***** but if you don-t have the weak mind of a woman and if you realize that its only psychological you can do it with less hassles.

I suggest dropping it cold turkey. Waiting a few weeks. And if you want to continue after that take it easy and smoke more casually. Cause in the end even if you don-t, tolerance becomes/will be a ***** and you wont get the good high anymore.
well weed really has no addictives in it. i smoke weed all the time and am finding it very hard to quit, but thats because im emotionally addicted. im only quitting because i get tested. but there is no way weed is actually bad for you. and if this subject really interests you a good book to read is the emperor wears no clothes.
i found it extremely interesting.
Well, I toked for 18 years and quit. I went through withdrawals for about a week and attended many NA meetings and still do 7 years later. Mind over matter my friend. How bad do you want to quit? You will make it if you really want to stop. There is life outside of weed.
-I am,- I said To no one there
And no one heard at all Not even the chair.

Chantix is the medication I am refering to,have you used it or do you know anything about it? Is it a anti-depressant?Does it work? Is there any adverse effects?
I-m on it. It isn-t an antidepressant at all. In fact, if you do have depression (or any other mental condition), it exacerbates it. The way it works can be kind of hard to explain. Basically what-s going on when you smoke is, nicotine is binding to nicotine receptors in your brain (the more nicotine you take in, the more receptors you grow for it), the binding then stimulates dopamine, which tells you that it-s enjoyable. So, when you take Chantix, the active chemical in it Varenicline blocks the ability of nicotine to bind to the receptors, and at the same time it binds to the receptors and stimulates some activity. It kind of tricks your brain into thinking it-s getting the nicotine, but since it isn-t the receptors for the nicotine eventually decrease (when the receptors for it are gone, your body no longer wants it.). Since the dopamine isn-t being stimulated like it was is the reason it can exacerbate any mental conditions. The results from that can range from aggitation to becoming very irritable and suicide to psychosis, but it-s not common. If you don-t have any mental conditions (depression, bipolar, schizophrenic, ect.) you should be just fine. I actually have anxiety and I-m doing great on it, so you just have to know your body and mind. The only side effects I have experienced so far is some dizziness and nausea in the first week, but it was minor and bearable. It works really well, even in the first week I went from over a pack a day to 2 cigarettes EASILY. By week 2, I wasn-t even enjoying those. I was bothered by my own smoke! I didn-t think about smoking during the day, I just kind of forgot about it. I mentally craved one with my coffee in the morning, but since I knew I didn-t enjoy them anymore and they bothered me, I had to tell myself no. It was actually pretty easy, SO unlike before! Now, when my boyfriend comes inside after smoking, I find the smell absolutely disgusting. I want nothing to do with it. I have tried everything in the past to quit (including the useless hypnosis sessions) and nothing could work for even a day. This medication is the only thing that has worked, and it did it without the torture! Chantix has a VERY good success rate (the other poster is dead wrong) and is HIGHY effective. I can-t say enough good about it. I-m happy, and thrilled to finally be smoke free. I highly recommend Chantix to anyone without depression who wants to quit for good! You should atleast try it. Just watch yourself, you-ll know if you begin to feel the mental side effects (it usually begins as depression, aggitation, irritability), then stop taking it. It-s not for everyone, but it-s worth a shot! If you ever have any questions about it at all, feel free to email me.
lol no. why would i spend money to make stop smoking, which is costing me money as well. the idea is to save. this is my last pac i swear.
See the website.

Go to you doctor and get some Zyban. I smoked for 23 years and it worked for me. I haven-t had a cigarette in 8 years.
hve sex its better and use comdoms

When I quit, I took up jogging. It helped take my mind off of it and it also reminds you how much harder it would be if you still smoked. I also had to quit drinking for a few months, because every time I had a drink I lost all my willpower and smoked a cig!!! I can-t even count the times I -smoked one last cig- !! Each time I quit, I lasted a little longer but I just kept trying. It took me about a year to quit completely! But now its been 5 years! And I never even crave a cig. The smell actually makes me sick! Good luck! You will never regret quitting!
okay put a rubber band around ur wrist. when EVER u think bout a cig. u pull it and snap it hard . and keep doin it every time. sounds bad but it werks.
Do things that you don-t smoke while doing. When I quit once I stayed in my bedroom a lot and read. I never smoked in my bedroom and I don-t smoke when reading a book. Also I don-t smoke while driving or taking a shower. I have quit several times and am still trying. It is so hard to do though since I live with my bf who smokes. Whenever he quits I quit too but then he starts again so I do too.

Have you tried gum and a punching bag. When you want to smoke chew gum. If the craving for a cigarette is still consuming you, keep punching the punching bag until the craving is gone.
If all else fails you can always resort to shock value. That-s how my dad quit. My mom was 1 month pregnant with me when my dad quit smoking. Someone told him that if a pregnant women inhales cigarette smoke the baby-s chance of being retarded and disfigured rose dramatically along with health problems. He quit on the spot.

How do I quit smoking? -

I-m 15 years old and I have been smoking for a few months. And I really want to stop but it-s really hard and also when I was smoking my brother but marijuana in them. So I was addicted to them. I need some help!!!!
I-ve been a smoker for 20 years - I-ve been off it for 1 week.

The answer was Champix / Chantix

Give up now...it-s a heap easier than when you-ve been at it a couple of decades

The addictive component is nicotine. Marijuana certainly doesn-t have the same addictive qualities as nicotine.

People hooked on pot are generally hooked on the tobacco they mix with it, rather than the weed itself...
1st thing: please DO quit.

It-s hard, so I didn-t ask for help, like you. I just killed myself for 20+ years.

Tried probably 10 times before I succeeded. A lot of people need more than 1 try to kick the habit, so don-t give up. it gets easier each time.

The ONLY thing that worked was the patches. Tried gum. Tried prescriptions. Tried hypnosis. Tried over the counter pills.

Follow the directions: start on a high dose (I didn-t feel any urges: there was plenty of nicotine in the high dose patch). Stay on it as directed (most people I know hate the co$t, so the try to cheat and do it in a shorter amount of time... and fail...). After you-re no longer psychologically addicted and the -habit- part is broken. Then you cut down slowly in nicotine dosage with different patches and work on the physical addiction.

By splitting up the painful process, it makes it much more tolerable.

Good luck to you!

Chaz
Just do not wait for the packet to get finished.Just toss it off and say good bye.May be you can keep some cloves with you to give you some burning sensation to your tongue.Very difficult a task. But with you age you have strong determination and it will not be that difficult as it was for me to quit after ten years. It is a habit. If you van do it you will see the change in you.you will be more confident of yourself, you are still growing and your growth will be better ----------
first of all
throw every single one of your smokes out!
and when you throw them into the bin
say to yourself -i will never smoke again-

secondly, when you feel like a smoke
slap your face? lol i don-t really know
you have to do something each time you wanna smoke
like eat chili or something you hate!

thirdly you could try a nicotine patch
or something like that
get it from your chemist/pharmacy

also, if you quit now, it will be alot easier for you
and you will put on many years of your life
instead of taking them off
I have used this program as so has many others.
Take Chantix, it-s amazing!
think bout those cancer sticks clogging ur lungs with tar

smoking is hard to quit, i dont smoke but I can help you understand what your doing to maybe gross you out. :-)

Physical addiction (Nicotine) is real, your body craves it after long term use. Psychological addicion as in the movement of your arm to put something in your mouth has an effect as well.

In your trechea, you have cells called -Psudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelial Tissue- which are cells lining your trechea. On them are cilia (small hair like projections) which beat in a wave like motion to pull out dirt, smoke, dust, etc., and dump it into your stomach. (That cough, clear your throat you do in the morning is that (the cells work best lying down)). When you smoke, it paralyzes those cilia and everything toxic, as long with anything else you breath in for the next hr stays in there too. regulalry smoking will cause them to consistantly still. so not just all the junk in the cigs get into your lungs, but people (dust :-)) whatever else gets in there.

If you quit!!... the first week is the hardest because your body is repairing and reactivating those cells and cilia starting to pull out all the junk in your lungs.

Hope this helps some.
It will be as hard as you make it, i know from personal experiance, i quit at one point and i told myself it was going to be easy, and it was, this time around its reallllly hard, and i quit the first time cold turkey, I wish i would of never picked them up again, but my dad got cancer removed and had to have heart sergery a week and a half apart,,, no stress or nothin, but make a promise to yourself that you will do it and try everything out there and make sure you have a really good support system around you, that will understand your mood swings :)
cold turkey, patch, gum, hypnosis, accupuncture. contact american lung association for more details.
You started smoking because you wanted to, right? So now you stop smoking because you want to. When you started you most likely had to overcome some unpleasant experiences such as coughing, dizzyness, smarting eyes, nausea, numbness in fingers, not to mention spending money!... but it was exciting because it was new and it ultimately made you feel good/cool/belong to group/rebellious/grown-up.
Now, you want to stop, you will have to overcome some unpleasant experiences also, all quite tolerable to get to your desired destination of a non-smoker, and until it becomes a habit not to smoke. You-ve just got to go and do it.
Lots of help at this website...

However I wanted to lose weight for the summer but my trouble is I just haven-t got the same willpower to give up junk food. I am so sad and frustrated it makes me angry.

Can anybody give me any ideas or advice to help me become more focused?

Thanks in advance :)
I don-t have any advice about losing weight as I struggle with that as well, but I just wanted to congratulate you on being able to not smoke. That takes a great deal of willpower. Maybe you just need to take it easy on yourself and go slow on the weight loss.

Keep up the good work. Good luck.

I need help quitting smoking.I have had a spinal fusion surgery done 1 year ago,and because I smoke it is not fusing the way it should.WHY I SMOKE?I do because I have nothing else,I havent worked in 2 years because of my injury.I have limitations.I dont have much for cash to pay for help, being on Workers Comp.,doesnt pay me crap.Just enough for my bill-s and cigs. The money I spend on cigs could be used for something else.
Most smokers, when you ask them, will claim that even though they smoke everyday, they really do want to quit smoking. However, the number one reason some smokers don-t quit is because deep down inside, they really do not want to quit at all. Nicotine is an addictive drug, simple as that. And the body, once introduced to high amounts of it over a period of time, can-t seem to function without it. Quitting smoking is hard, but the truth of the matter is that if you go 48 hours without a cigarette, the nicotine in your body is then gone. After the first 48 hours, if a smoker wants another cigarette, it is possibly for reasons other than a nicotine addiction. I have a blog that discusses more of what I have been writing about. If you feel like checking it out, I would completely suggest it.
http://smoking-break-the-habit.blogspot.com/
One of the most common reasons people give for not quitting smoking is that they have become comfortable with the feel of a cigarette in their hands. Some even say they just like to watch the smoke come out of their mouths. Lots of smokers go back to smoking because they had nothing to do with their hands. We are creatures of habit and this makes perfect sense. If all you just miss the touch of a cigarette, try and hold a real one. However, some find that simply handling a cigarette when trying to quit makes them want to smoke one. Eating regular meals to avoid getting hungry is also a good tip.

More money due to not spending in on cigarettes.
Breath, hair, and clothes smell better.
Ability to walk a flight of stars, jog or even run.
Annoying phlegmy cough disappears.
Lower blood pressure.
Lower chance of heart disease.
I hadn-t smoked for a year. I got extreme stress one weekend and smoked a pack daily for 3 or 4 days. At first no prob except I felt like I was wasting my money on nothing. Then my throat swelled close and I couldn-t talk for 3 or 4 days and when I had to I sounded ready to die. I also felt a lot of pain. I felt the tormented need to smoke and when I did I felt like I was swallowing coals.

Haven-t smoked again for a couple weeks, my skin is dewey and nice, I have energy, less headaches, and I am in a better mood, having to face my moods without focusing on the cigarette.
I weened off cigs with Quest Cigarettes which helped a lot for me. I was irratable for weeks and had a few headaches.

Tried to consciously breathe when I got really stressed and wanted a cigarette desperately. That worked REALLY well for me.

Started to walk and workout which got a lot easier the longer I quit. I used gum, Twizzlers, and cinnamon sticks to curb my oral fixation.
I am quitting smoking cold turkey since 4-15 after over 30 years one pack a day of smoking. Here are some side effects or withdrawal symptoms that I have or had,

-Heart palpitations
-Few diarrhea
-Night sweats and mild insomnia
-Tingling/numbness in feet and legs
-Tight chest, dry mouth and few phlegm
-Anxiety...
i have been smoke-free for about 8 months now. Honestly after the first couple days, it was pretty easy(a little more irritable) although i did have craving at certain times, but it was more habit (IE driving home, after work, etc.) after about 3 weeks , i hit a point where the next week i was definetly craving them, and aftre that i was fine. hang tough!
After 48 hours of not smokeing your sense of tase and smell get imidiately better, you have more energy as your lungs function better.. your metabolism is increased as well... You lose the foul smoke odor, and you become less iratable.

I need a good gift idea for my mom, she just quit smoking! and joined weight watchers... any ideas? -

im really proud of her, but i am only a teenager, and only working a minimum wage job. i cant afford much. for christmas i want to get my mom something she can use, maybe something tieing into the weight watcher and her quitting smoking. (p.s shes lost 13 lbs :-D)
When I saw your question my first thought was: a new, flattering outfit! But I know that a whole outfit can be expensive, so maybe that-s not the best idea. Say -good job- from me! I-m so proud of all the healthy changes she-s been making! And you sound like you-re being such a supportive, loving daughter...bless you both!
get her a T-shirt for weight watchers, that will reflect the 13lbs that she has lost.(her size now) maybe you can get something printed on it.
To stop smoking: TARBLOCKS. My mom uses them and within a week I believe it was, we all noticed a big difference. Her breath smelt less like a rotten ashtray, she finds herself with more breath and isn-t worn out so easily as previously. TARBLOCKS usually run about $2 but they are seriously worth it.

To loose weight, Slimfast Optima. It-s helping me a lot.
sad to say this.. but i dont think she wud last the distnce... i am not pesimestic, but lots of pple barely make it thru 5months without the addiction re-0curing.
what i wud advice u is to stand by her when she starts failing.. b strong, supportive and yet VERY FIRM. take the cigarettes away, make her life uneasy if she eats too much, den smile n say u did it 4 her good.
a time comes wen we have to mother our own mothers.

buy her a simple gift...or a book.. wit pictures about the subject of struggles... something educative and relaxing
gift certificate for her fav clothing store, she-s gonna need new clothes, and dont forget to constantly congratulate her on the new decisions in her life as well as her new life becoming. It-s very important to keep it on track, your very lucky to have a mother so concerned with life!
I-m sure anything would be much appreciated, but you could get her something with an inspirational saying on it, and let her know how proud you are of her and it will help give her a boost when the going gets tough. Maybe a massage or something also would be nice. You can get a gift certificate for that, and they run about $30-$50. Or, get her a membership to the Y in your area. Maybe a dual one and you can work out with her! Good luck
how bout a subscription to a weight watchers / shape type of magazine. or any inspirational magazine - they have those great -real life stories- in them - about other women that have achieved great things like your mom. that might inspire her to keep it up! and you get good deals on mag subscriptions at this time of year.
My mom has been doing great also with losing weight. She said her main reward is to go shopping..so maybe a gift card to her favorite store will help. She can buy herself new clothes. Or try spa time for you and her together. My mom and I did that and it was wonderful.
I would say don-t get anything related to either of those things- let her know you-re happy for her, but that she-s not doing it for you. her success is her own and she will feel as if she has disappointed you if she gains the weight back and starts back smoking. k, sorry for the psych stuff... does she have a favorite perfume? a new purse is always fun, too
gym membership. especially around the holidays, health fitness clubs usually give a great deal on memberships.
buy her a nice hand bag.my daugther just bought me one and i love it.

How did you quit smoking? -

I tried everything but I-ll retry something. I did use Chantix, the patches, the gums, hypnotism, smoking sensation classes, etc...
I read a book called, -The Easy way to stop smoking- By Allan Carr.
It should actually be called the simple way to stop smoking.
The book teaches you how to change your relationship with nicotine so that you can just stop.
It takes time for the principles to take hold in your mind but it really works.
Its really hard if you get into something.
Vices (smoking,drinking and etc.)
I suggest you to avoid thinking of ciggarettes even though its hard and avoid seeing ciggaretes cause it tempts you to smoke.

This is my suggestion if you really want to quit smoking.
:p
I went through my best friend losing a lung and it didn-t stop me. But when 5 years later I watched the doctors shove breathing pipes down her and ask me two days later if I had power of attorney to pull the plug. I never touched one again. I had smoked 3 to four packs a day for twenty years. I have now become the the worlds worst reformed smoker. Oh and she died a very painful death. So go to a hospital and visit someone who is a smoker .
Maybe you jsut realy want to smoke? Sounds psychological. My boyfriend quit with chntix if he can anyone can. He actually cried cause he said they were his friends.

Maybe you don-t really want to quit deep down, no one can change that but you.
when you want a cigarette just eat a candy and don-t think about it. take a small nap or something.
hope it helps. :) it helped me
I used the best method ever, I was never stupid enough to start.

Sorry, I realize that isn-t very helpful.

Has anyone in here quit smoking with the medication called Chantix? -

I took it for six months, which is the maximum. By then my habit was almost but not quite gone, and I was able to go the extra mile on my own.

I had some nausea like the other poster, but it wasn-t bad enough so that I couldn-t use it. Also vivid dreams. It can have some weird side effects in some people, seems to vary widely. Some of those are probably the effects of nicotine withdrawal since it-s blocking our nicotine receptors.

Overall, it seems to be the most effective drug out there, and I-d recommend it highly with the the proviso that you may not be able to tolerate it. If after taking it you find yourself depressed or thinking about suicide, stop immediately and call your doctor!
My father and step mother have been taking it for about three weeks now, and are doing great on it. Part of the treatment is that almost always the smell or smoking of a cigarette will make you sick on your stomach. But you do have to stay on it for the time it tells it to.
Here is a great website

I tried that stuff a while back. It gave me massive headaches. My sister also tried it just last month and it made her so sick to her stomach that she had to stop taking it, too. Needless to say, neither one of us had an ounce of success with it.

I quit smoking weed, what should I expect? -

I quit smoking weed, what should I expect? -

I-ve been smoking everyday for about 2 years. I recently quit this is my 3rd day. What is my body going to be going through? What should I expect/what should I do? Is there anything I should buy at the store to assist me? Thank ya very mucho.
It-s not addictive. You should not expect anything.
Your breathing will become better. You may notice a little more energy. Your memory will improve over time.

You shouldn-t need anything to help, because marijuana isn-t addictive unless you make it. The only people who have trouble quitting are people who simply don-t want to.

I-ve smoked off and on for...12 years and have had to quit multiple times for different reasons. Working at a job that drug tests, getting pregnant, getting a lower paid job, low funds due to car trouble, etc. Never once did I have the slightest bit of trouble quitting.

If you have any trouble at all quitting, then it is all in your head. The human mind is very powerful. If you think you need it, you will. Just remind yourself that you don-t need or want it any time you get the urge to smoke. Remind yourself why you-re quitting. It-s really no big deal, so don-t make it one.
You can expect a little withdrawal, yes I-m for real, things like finding it harder to get to sleep at night, irritability, loss of appetite, depression, memory issues, et cetera for the next couple weeks or so. Should be totally fine in about a month. Stick with whatever you know is best for you.
Well first off, Im sorry to hear you quit. I had to stop for a while after everyday for almost nearly a year and i felt an increase in my anger and my patience dropped dramatically. You might still want to smoke, but you don-t have to since weed is not addicting. hope it all works out for you.
You-ll probably notice that during the day your mind is a lot clearer and you can focus better. Also, you may get moody. Mood swings are a symptom when coming off of ANY drug. Kava tea/extract, used as follows can give a calming effect that can help soothe mood swings.

Also - now that your a non-smoker, expect life to seem boring and dull. JK ;-)
i use to smoke weed everyday for around the same amount as time as you. and i quit. nothing happened to me. im still fine. im happy....everythings the same. but if you think things will change for you then they might but only because your making yourself think things. i wouldnt stress it ur going to be fine. i think weed is the least harmful drug out there. i think you would get more side effects from taking a bayor or asprin whatever its called, everyday to prevent heart attacks and then just stopped taking them. honestly i think everything has side effects just depends on what type of person you are. good luck
Keep busy, stay strong, eventually you will notice positive effects. Memory gets better, loose weight (no more munchies), save money, clearer head, and no fear of drug testing.

Good luck! I think it-ll take you only a couple weeks to get through the withdrawls.
there-s no physical addiction to weed, only psychological. Just keep your mind occupied with other things, you should be fine. Don-t expect -withdrawl- symptoms like you do with cocaine or other rec drugs.

People here talk about how they gave up weed like yourself and share their stories on how and what they went through

You might find your answers there
When I have to quit for work I will have dreams that I got high. I wake up in a panic thinking I got high and I am gonna fail my drug test! It-s freaky. Other than that I have no other issues.
Don-t assume you need to replace weed with something. Just ride it out. Eat lots, drink lots. Get some exercise. No pills, no powders.
Lol nothing.

You don-t go through physical w/d...
I hate when people act like they-re about to go through opiate or heroin withdraws... stfu alreadyy and stop whining
it made me depressed when i quit
I quit smoking weed, what should I expect? -

How long after you quit smoking does it take your system to be totally free of nicotine? How long for withdraw? -

hi igotmach

ditto what starry night said... some claim 3 days its gone.. some chemicals are in your system for longer periods..

i also would recommend you check in with a support group.. i have been quit for 5 years now as a result of my participation in nicotine anonymous.. i attend meetings locally as well as voice meetings on the internet.. support is as close as your computer!!.. you are welcome to attend while planning a quit, all are welcome smoking or quit!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
20 minutes after quitting:
Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.

12 hours after quitting:
The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.

2 weeks to 3 months after quitting:
Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

1 to 9 months after quitting:
Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.

1 year after quitting:
The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker-s.

5 years after quitting:
Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.

10 years after quitting:
The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker-s. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease, too.

15 years after quitting:
The risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker-s.
How severe your symptoms are depends on how long you smoked and how many cigarettes you smoked each day. Common symptoms include:

An intense craving for nicotine
Tension
Irritability
Headaches
Difficulty in concentrating
Drowsiness and trouble sleeping
Increased appetite and weight gain.
Nicotine withdrawal is short-lived and symptoms should pass in time, usually less than a week. While withdrawal is the most uncomfortable part of quitting, the real challenge is beating long-term cravings and staying away from tobacco.

Like any addiction, quitting tobacco is difficult, particularly if you are acting alone. If you join smoking cessation programs, you have a much better chance of success. Such programs are offered by hospitals, health departments, community centers, and work sites.

I wanna quit smoking, but I am really stressed!? -

I really need to quit smoking... But I am so stressed right now. I am facing some possible medical issues, and need to change my lifestyle. Starting with the smoking, I am just so stressed out right now. Anyone been through this, any suggestions? Cold turkey is just not an option for me, and I have horrible will power. I have a baby girl and really wanna stick around to see her grow up! Please help me!
Also there is no scare tactic that will help me, I have had 3 realatives die in the last 2 years from cancer and that has only made me smoke more! HELP!
Make an appointment with your doctor to determine which smoking cessation aids would work for you. Join a support group. There are 3 Yahoo support groups. Check them out. My favorite is Nicotine Busters.

Good luck to you!

i smoked for 25, nearly 26 years and have been smoke free for 2 years and 4 months. I quit cold turkey and called this 1 800 Quit Now line, it is free no strings attached and support when ever you need it, plus buy lots and lots of bottled water, when i first started, every time i had a craving for a cigarette i opened a bottle of water and sucked it down and after that my craving was gone. Water is great because it is low in sodium, sugars and calories, since there aren-t any in water.
Gaining weight is one of the biggest side effects i had when i quit and originally gained like 15 pounds, but after like the first year i joined a gym and could actually use the bikes, stair masters, jogging machines, weights etc and not lose my breath, i am today 25 pounds lighter then when i was smoking, so i lost the 15 pounds i gained plus another 10 pounds.
A Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking- will help you.
There is a new medication on the market called Chantix that blocks the nicotine receptors in the brain reducing the cravings considerably, talk to your doc to get a prescription. Hope this helps, good luck!

How did you quit smoking cigarettes for good? -

How did you quit smoking cigarettes for good? -

nicotine is a highly toxic alkaloid used mainly in pesticides. i repeated that sentence to myself and drank a glass of water everytime i wanted a cig. it-s been 8 years now :)
you simply do not buy cigarettes
1- Don-t go around telling people you quit. Let you actions speak.
2- Don-t throw out your cigarettes or try to ration them.
3- Keep a pack available at all times.
4- Whenever you have an urge to smoke, make a conscious decision to smoke that single cigarette. If you decide you don-t want it, put it back in the pack. Soon you will find that you are smoking less and less. If after some time without, you feel the urge, force yourself to decide again if you want that cigarette.

This method worked for me 12 years ago. I went from 2 packs a day to 5 cigarettes a day in the first week. Don-t try to set goals. Let it come naturally.

GOOD LUCK
The best thing to do is just quit cold turkey. It-s hard to do but the other plans like the gum, patches, etc...just never seem to work. Just make it up in your mind that you are going to quit smoking and do it. Throw all of your old packs away. Also, don-t try to quit gradually, because you will more than likely start smoking more than you did before!
DIE
I used the patch...If I was to it all over I would just DO it...I think the patch makes it stretch out forever...Do-nt smoke...Not even a drag...then you will be a non smoker!
My mom quit cold turkey 46 years ago. She never touched another one.
Well, Jackie F, First you have to really want to. If you don-t fugettaboutit. If you do try the Nicodrem patches. I did for about 6 weeks and haven-t smoked in 10 years. But think of it this way. You are NEVER an ex-smoker, just a smoker that isn-t smokin!
One night 15 years ago I crunched up my pack and swore I would never smoke another cigarette. I was a heavy (2 pack plus) long time smoker and scared that I was beginning to experience emphysema. Thankfully I was successful. The withdrawal was short - a few days but the emotional dependence went for a long time. All these pills and patches are garbage - you just gotta quit. It-s worth it.
Nicotine gum helped me quit. I used it for about a week and since then I have been a non-smoker for the past 4 months.
Cold Turkey.
Set a date, smoked my last cigarette, tossed out all my lighters and ashtrays. Began sucking on straws and toothpicks to curb the oral fixation part. Worked for me. It only takes about 48 -72 hrs to have the nicotine out of your system. Worked for me. Still have the occasional desire to have one and then I remember why I quit. I-ve been smoke free for 3.5 yrs. I smoked for almost 20 yrs. Good luck!
Personally I watched my brother die of lung cancer. I laid my cigarettes down and that was 3 years ago. I have not wanted one since. The funny thing is Ive been a nurse for 25 years Ive watched alot of people die of lung cancer but it doesnt hit home til its someone you love. Dont put your family or yourself through that if you can do anything to change it.
I smoked for 8 years, I just decided one day to not smoke anymore. Half way through a cigarette I put it out and did not light one ever again. You-re probably saying it was just easy for me, it-s different for you...it hurts, but believe me I went through some serious withdrawal. I would grab for a pencil every time I wanted to smoke and chewed through several, but I was determined. I just kept telling myself it won-t last forever...it-s only pain it will go away. It will go away, and after a week, it started to calm down, then by a month all the residual -pain- was gone. Now I am free from cigarettes 15 years. Don-t let the cigarette companies own you, Do some research on what you are putting into your body. Get angry. YOu only have one set of lungs and it hurts worse when you can-t get oxygen into your body than a few weeks of withdrawal. Good luck, I know you can do it.
try Chantix, it worked well for me.
As a nurse I watched many people die from it....terrible deaths from basically suffocation.
Discipline. Just quite cold turkey. I made a commitment to myself and I am honoring it.
I just stopped.
I went to bed one night and told myself I am never going to smoke again. The next week was kind of hard, but I kept myself busy, and I have not smoked in about 5 years....

what should i do quitting is very hard for me since i am in college. during the summer time i didnt smoke because i wasn-t in school. but in college between classes i need a smoke! i know its bad for me but it helps me calm down. i dont want to quit now because when you quit i have high anxiety and i cant have that in college because i do a lot of presentations and i dont want to turn red! so what should i do? how long does anxiety stay for?
I quit for 3 years - went back--it was really dumb. I now have been off for 12 years - will never go back. After 48 to 72 hours, your physical cravings are usually gone. The rest is psychological - thats where will power comes in. Give it your best shot - you will be happy with yourself let alone the health benefits you will gain. Good luck!

i-ve been around two people on two different occasions while they were smoking. normally i don-t do this, but one of the people is a very good friend of mine who recently started back up, and another is a good friend i haven-t seen in over five years. do you think the smell triggered nicotine receptors in my brain, and that-s why i-m having cravings again? what should i do? do i just avoid standing around people when they-re smoking?
Yes! Get away from the smokers! You can only live once! Don-t be a smoker or be a second hand smoker either! You-ll regret it!!!
Go for a walk ... find a distraction . they will pass.

I quit after 26 years on 8.8.08 and I get A LOT of support from an online forum. Come join us ... you will LOVE it.

Can you give me some advice? I consider myself a social smoker, or maybe worse. I only smoke when I-m bored. When I-m at home, I-m always busy doing something, but as soon as I go out, I feel the need to light up a cigarette. Can you please give me some advice on what should I do, or with what should I replace the cigarette with?
Buy a bulk box of Chupa-chups and keep three or four in your pockets and car and hall table and so on, and stick one of them in your mouth whenever you feel the urge.

Works, trust me.
Nothing, but determination
chewing gum, candy, a chocolate.
