This is a very interesting question. I quit 6 years and still seem to have the same problem. I think the nicotine must build up in your lower intestine and when you fart, voila!! Someone suggested I pay more attention to wiping myself. Have you ever heard of anything so foolish.

one time, i used something called will power. You have the power to control your hands and mouth, use that power to fullest and you will feel more and more in control.

Whatever you know or have heard would be helpful...
patch can make your skin itchy and wears off late in the day. be sure to buy the highest mg, even when you begin to reduce the dosage. simply cut them into half-s or quarters can save a lot of money-plus you can apply an extra half if you get a craving.

gums works ok, but I prefered the lozenges since they don-t require chewing.

BTW C R is somewhat correct, but the power of BOTH a physical addition to nicotine and a mental conditioning of smoking being relaxing is very hard to overcome. its much easier if you can get rid psychological needs for a few months and then ween off or cold turkey the nicotine itself. and if cold turkey fails, make sure to go to gum, or lozenges instead of cigarettes.
I struggled to quit for a long time, but never was comfortable with pills or patches. Pay money to the pharmaceutical industry after I-ve been paying to tobacco industry for so many years? I disagree with that concept. I have been a smoker, and I quit cold turkey. In my personal opinion, as long as you continue to give your body nicotine, it will still crave it. That is why people who -cut down- eventually start smoking the same amount again.

They say it does according to some family practice doctors in St Louis. I had 4 of my patients go to one doctor for auricular therapy. NO ONE stopped smoking. All the doc did was a wallet biopsy. Can google tons of programs to stop smoking, many work. You have to be ready to stop smoking, mainly. Also, figure out what triggers smoking in the first place. If it is anxiety, get Valerian root tablets or an anti-anxiety medicine (very low dose). No one ever died of a very low dose of anti-anxiety medicine, but they did of lung cancer.

I-m 17 and my sister is 10. My parents are both almost 40, and they have been smoking since before I was born. We are so scared one of them is going to get cancer or something horrible. If they do, then you can have your sister start coughing when your mom or dad puffs smoke in the same room or something (I start to cough when I smell cigarette smoke :P), and then act dramatic and say that you or your sister will end up dead in the hospital one day because of all the smoke. Secondhand smoke also kills quite frequently, so you can mention that too. Question if they really care about you and your sister....and tell them that it feels so horrible to deal with all the smoke everyday and the terrible fear that they (as in your parents) can die any moment. This could cause them to yell at you, but it-s worth a try.
You can also try this: talk to your mom and dad separately one day, and ask how they acquired the habit, and why they smoke. This way you can find out other ways to kill their habit. Try to understand, be calm when talking to them, and sweetly tell them (especially your mom) that you really care about them and don-t want to see them die. Quitting also means saving a lot of money.

I smoked the same number of cigarettes as your father for 47 years. I thought I couldn-t stop smoking and I tried everything you can buy to help you stop. Nothing worked! Even after my doctor told me I had emphysema, I still couldn-t quit. I was taken to the hospital near death one night and fired up on the way home a week later. As I said I am not going to smoke another cigarette in this life time, my last one was last night before I fell asleep. I gave away the cigarettes I had, except for one sealed pack that will be my trophy. But I am in need of some help, can anyone out there help me in this? i believe its all will power. you want to lose weight, get a better job, even quit smoking, all it takes is the right frame of mind. do not let anything or anyone stand in your way...especially those that encourage you to break. because in the long run, its your life not theirs...who-s gonna give a d a m n for you if not yourself?...you sound like you are resolved to quit once and for all...excellent! thats the way to start...go cold turkey..forget the gums and the patches...that stuff is for people that need to be weened off their addictions...just quit and end of story...once its out of your system its out. im not saying it will be easy...but it will be worth it in the end. focus on something else...when you get a craving go and workout or jog a while...do something that benefits your health rather than deteriorates it. pysche your body out...when you get cravings for a cigarette..punish your body and lift weights or anything else that will get your mind off the cigarettes.

Go on a long camping trip where you don-t have access to cigarettes. Cold Turkey it and go crazy where no one can see you. Plus the fresh outdoor air will do you good to help clean out your lungs. Buy lots and lots of gum, I-m talking cases of the stuff, preferably sugerless.
Try the patch or some other aid (ie. Nicorette Gum). When I quit, I used the patch, and it worked great. In the end though, it doesn-t matter what aid you use, you still have to want to quit.
All of the above is definitely good advice the only other useful peice of advice if I may be so bold is please get rid of that trophy.

I am a doc and I got my own dad to quit, as well as a number of other people. I got a heroin addict off of both dope and smokes, but he told me later that stopping the smokes was harder!!!!
My advice: Cold turkey just works best, despite all the stuff they try to sell you. It takes two weeks to get your body to withdraw from the nicotine. You will be in a BAD mood, so don-t plan anything stressful, like a family reunion or something. But...after two weeks, the addiction will be only in your mind, not your body anymore.
If you really have trouble during those first two weeks, I suggest you could always to to the pharmacy and pick up some of that nicotine gum to chew. You chew a little and then less and less over a couple of weeks. But lots of people have just gone ahead and done it cold turkey.
Next you have to figure out what makes it worse. Do you want a cigarette when you watch a certain tv show? Or is it when you are sitting on the porch before bed? Everybody has a pattern, you need to know what yours is, and try to think of something to distract you during your smoking pattern times. Maybe you could call up a friend and talk during that tough time, or maybe you could get yourself a celery stick to chew on or a piece of long grass to chew on the end part like we all used to do as kids.
You can do it, all you have to do is decide right now. Make sure your freinds are all on board with this, you can-t have them dragging you down and offering you cigarettes etcetera.
But yes, it is hard, but you CAN do it, I know because I have seen many people be successful.
In Colorado (and I am sure other states) there is a quit-line you can call and they will give you free nicotine patches, also there is a prescription that a lot of doctors are prescribing called Bupropion it is an antidepressant, but also works for quiting. I also agree about the idea about going camping without cigarettes that would work well also,but before you go get rid of all the ashtrays in the house, or where you usually smoke, clean out your car so there won-t be the smell to lure you back when you get home, also don-t go around people that smoke, it will only make you want one.

Not the group sessions.

Quitting on your own is a real option as well, however you must basically self hypnotize yourself each time the urge to light up arrives or when around other smokers, stressful situations etc.

The addiction isn-t nicotine as commonly perceived it-s the addiction to the many sensual habits involved with smoking.

Actually wanting to quit smoking (more than you want to smoke). Works for drinking too. Theres oh I-m quitting/cutting down puff puff puff, or oh I-ll just have a few more/finish this pack. Or you can bit the bullet and stop doing it, something that helps to remember is that the drugs gone from your system in 3 days, and after a week your bodies basically recovered from the physical addiction. You will still get cravings but as time goes on they become less.
Also if you lapse and have a cigarette, just keep trying if it-s a pack chuck it out again, throw out the cigarette don-t finish it.

edit: oh yeah if that is too hard, you could change your addiction to the gum or the patches, and stop damaging your lungs.

Watch someone you love die of cancer! Volenteer to help in the cancer ward of a local hospital...they could always use help, and it would be a real wake up call to you!
Set a date of significance, commit to it and between now and then, like a mantra, repeatedly go over within yourself all of the good reasons for quitting. Build up a psychological arsenal and prepare for physiological AND psychological battle. Cold Turkey when the day comes. Try to occupy your time with things throughout the day. Cold turkey is impossible.. gum tastes horrible - patches don-t do much.....
My husband and I smoked since we were in our teens (16 years old). More on than off I-m afraid. At age 45 we finally kicked the habit in the most unusual way. We bought a new home, the new carpet, paint, and fresh wood smelled so good and clean. We both made a house rule before we moved in, to not smoke in the house. It worked quit well smoking out side during the summer and fall, then came winter and the snow with it. We found our selves outside less and less. Before winter was over we had lost our craving for cigarettes! We-re both 64 now, we haven-t touched a cigarette since then! We learned from past experience that once you quit and start again a short time later, it is harder to quit the next time around. so we simply didn-t try even one little drag as we had in the past when we would quit for only a couple of weeks. Your question is really brief, if you are asking how to quit smoking, I wish I had the answer, but I have found a good way to cut back. Never more than 1 cigarette in an hour. Never carry cigarettes with you. Make certain places off limits to yourself, like in the car or at the computer. Try to cut back first then the nicotine dependancy lessens. I used to smoke a pack a day now I am down to 7 to 9 cigarettes for the past year.
I don-t smoke, and if you do, please do whatever you can to stop, it-s bad for you in case you haven-t noticed.

I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.

Its nicotine withdrawal and you are reaching the end of it, dont smoke again or you will have to do through withdrawal another time.
Stick at it and slow down, you need to take something to slow your system down as its agitated because it needs nicotine.
You can either go to the doctors for something or you could try taking some paracetamol, I know it sounds daft but it sends signals to the brain that help with pain control so you are less likely to be agitated.
I gave up smoking a month ago now and I still fancy a cig so it takes a long time for your head to stop wanting one as in 3/4 days the nicotine withdrawal will start to ease.

The last time I -quit- smoking I still wanted to murder everyone in my sight after 4 months. I quit smoking again, and it-s been 3 weeks and I am so angry all the time it-s annoying as hell. Will it take years to quit being angry????

Me and my husband gave up on July 1st.
I still crave them and I still get cranky. I really struggle to not go and buy a pack. The lozenges and gum make me feel sick and they dont ease the craving. My doctor told me that the nicotine is out of your system after 2 weeks but the addiction is the hardest to kick. SHE-S TELLIN ME!!

Keep something nearby for sticking in your mouth such as a straw or a toothpick, anything that makes you have that -feeling- of a cigarette in your mouth.
I am not a smoker so I have no idea what the addiction is like but my mom quit 6 months ago and my grandfather quit 2 years ago. They both have said they still have cravings. My grandfather had them bad in the morning. His cancer was enough motivation to stick it out. My mother has been drinking Orange Juice, when she had went to a quit smoking club years ago they said OJ puts back something in your body that the nicotine takes out. I hope this helps a little. I stopped smoking cannabis a week ago after doing it for about 3 months (i know it doesn-t sound long) and ever since then, i still feel a tiny bit stoned all the time and sometimes i feel like i-m in a dream world.....

Will this feeling pass after a month or so? Or will i be stuck with it for life, i-m worried, HELP

It will pass in time; cannabis is like any other substance - if you withdraw it suddenly after a period of regular use, you will notice a difference.

Three months of use is not, IMO, long enugh to trigger a serious problem, though it does sound like cannabis probably isn-t for you, so good for you for being sensible enough to quit. Too many people just press on, and wind up making themselves ill, which does nothing to help the decrim campaign..

I had been trying to no avail and then I found out I was pregnant and that was the last straw I set a fire I made a fire and burned them all. It-s tough to quit cold turkey though but I did it and it worked. And I called someone every time I wanted to smoke and I chewed through packs and packs of gum and everytime I wanted one I-d jog around the block or do something else.

Now I-m eating more candy to distract me but its been 4 months. I have urges but they don-t last more than a second or two. If they-re lasting more than that then you-re concentrating on the cigarette. Don-t do it. Concentrate on something else.

2. insist on sharing a cigarette.

I think the best way (and this is the way I did it after smoking for over 20 years) is to simply stop. Make up your mind not to buy any, and when the pack runs out then that is it. Dont substitute it for patches or gum. Just stop.

I have been smoke free for 7 years and the only trick that worked for me was to just throw them way. It took a few tries, but eventually it worked. The first week is the hardest as you withdraw from nicotine addiction.

I tried lowering the amount I smoked by one every day but I was still absorbing nicotine, so that didn-t work.

You need to just not smoke when you wake up. Think about it, you-ve already gone 8 hours (sleep time) of no smoking.

You also need to change your habits. If you wake up and light a butt and then take a shower, mix up your routine.

I chewed about 20 packs of Chiklets per day to satisfy my cravings. It was mostly a distraction, but that also worked for me. Try to find something that will satify the hand to mouth habit - meaning, you-re used to bringing that cigg up to your mouth - try gum or water. Sounds lame, but it can work if you psych yourself up enough.

Obviously smoking is bad for you. My boyfriend smokes and was diagnosed with HIV 4 years ago (still doesn-t need meds). I-m wondering if quitting smoking will greatly impact his life in regard to the development of AIDS, and in assisting death.

I-m not asking if smoking will kill him. That will obviously, eventually. I-m asking if quitting smoke is a good idea in respect to HIV and the development of AIDS, or if it will really make much of a difference.

Why do it? Anything in excess is bad for the body, and vigorous cardio exercise is not recommended especially when you have just quit smoking. Give your body a time to heal by practising moderation.

I have almost lost my voice
I am going into my fourth day of quitting smoking, and it is incredibly difficult. I have broken down a few times, but I do want to say that from personal experience, I have gotten what I thought were colds when I attempted to quit in the past. This is because the cilia, or hair-like structures around your lungs that filter out nasty air (i.e. cigarettes) are healing themselves. They heal at a really fast rate, actually, so what you are going through is normal. It is also normal to have coughing with phlegm. So, go ahead and get the tea and honey or throat lozenges as was suggested. That will help a lot. Get a lot of rest. Perhaps even try a chloroseptic spray (but be careful as these are harmful for long-term use too) to help your throat. One final suggestion is to try an expectorant to try and cough up some of the phlegm.
Actually as an ex smoker I can tell you that it is pretty normal. If you are feeling really sick, seek the opinion of a physician or specialist doctor. Drink a lot of liquids. Lemonade with a tea spoon of honey will do the job or throat lozenges. Drink hot liquids. Gargle with baking soda and luke warm water; afterwards with water , lemon juice and a little salt in a small glass. Exchange this gargles about every 4 hours. This will change the PH in your throat killing of the bacteria that has formed their. It will also sooth your irritated throat. Tea with honey will also feel good. Hope this helps.

I never got a sore throat when I quit.. and I was a smoker for 4 years. Possibly a cold? If you want a tip drink lots of caffeine, it will help, trust me.

Hey, I-m sure you-ve all heard it before, but I-d quite like to stop smoking.

Any general advice would be appreciated.

I personally went to one of those hoaky hypnosis seminars thinking that it probably wouldn-t work...that was on 3/6/03 and I haven-t had a cigarette since!! The biggest tool here is that you really have to want to quit and you have to tell yourself that there is no turning back...this time they are gone! I also used deep breaths when I got the urge to reach for them...told myself very firmly -NO- and I followed it with -this too shall pass-. It worked!

You can also get a prescription for these pills from the doctor. My Mommy got them and she has really cut down on cigarettes, although she wasn-t trying to quit.

My Dad got hypnotized. It worked for 5 years! The second time it only worked for a year. He-s under a TON of stress so that explains it though. They put you in a trance and show you gross pictures while telling you that cigarettes are poison. I-d look into it.

When you-re trying to quit, make sure not to drink any caffeine. It makes you crave cigarettes really bad! xD

Just quite smoking bit by bit. Everyday other day remove one stick of your usual number of stick you smoke per day. That way, your body will experience just slight, if any, withdrawal symptoms.
There is going to be a hypnosis seminar going on it Baltimore next weekend, this worked for me before, I know it sounds weird. The thing is that when I was with this guy he did not like me smoking, so he paid for it, well needless to say he cheated and I thought that I would piss him off by starting again, but I got sicker then a dog. I should have never started, so I figure it worked before and it only cost 40 bucks and I spend that in 1 week easy for smokes. Any way it may or may not work, do not go to private therapist, they are costly this guy gives you a life time guarantee, needless to say I lost my other one so now I have to pay.

to start with you must determine if you are more chemically or mentally addicted. There is a difference. I was a 4 pack per day, 25 year smoker. I was more mentally addicted than chemical. There are different measures taken to be successful in quiting. You must be prepared for the mood swings and physical discomforts. Also be aware that most of us started smoking as kids and never experienced life before tobacco as adults with any life experiences to speak of. Every day life will be changed. It is good. I am 17 years smoke free and lovin every minute of it.

I know a couple that quit last year and their best method to help them was to always keep gum and chew it whenever they wanted a cigarette and smoking one very little until not at all. It also takes great willpower. I have heard that hypnosis, even the audios from the internet, help greatly in gaining enough willpower.
My hubby smoked for 30 years. I have a severe smoke allergy and asthma. So he had an incentive to want to quit (if he wanted to be with me). He was put on Wellbutrin by the doctor and it made it so that cigarettes tasted awful. After a month or so, he couldn-t stand the smell of cigarette smoke. He took the Wellbutrin for about a year and has been off of it for several years now. He has no desire to smoke. :)

They have a new laser treatment, at least here in Wisconsin that supposed to work for $300.00. Some people it works on but they use a laser to the part of your brain that gets addicted. Second, you just have to stop. The first 72 hours are the worst. After that, it-s all in your head.
Third, don-t put yourself in a situation where you would normally like to smoke for a t least a couple of weeks. (bars, haning out with chain smokers, etc)

For me, the best thing I did was to stop going in to the gas station. Just paid for gas at the pump and did not go in to the store. I also had to ask my family not to mention it to me either. Don-t tell me I-m doing good, don-t ask me if I am having cravings, and if I am being crabby, just ignore me.

First of all, there isn-t any fast or easy way. However, I was a pack a day smoker for ten years and I haven-t smoked a cigarette for the last five years. Here-s how I did it. When I got the urge to smoke, I didn-t smoke the whole cigarette. Who decided what the size of cigarettes should be anyway? I would just take a couple of drags off of it and put it out. This quickly cut me down to half a pack. Then I started inhaling only part of the smoke. The idea was to wean my body off the effects of nicotine (There has been research that suggests the addiction to nicotine is stronger than that of heroin). I just kept on inhaling less and less of the smoke until I was hardly inhaling any of it all. Four months after I had started this whole thing, I just quit buying cigarettes. Now, I-m not going to tell you I don-t occasionally get urges to smoke. All recovering addicts (and that-s what you, and I, are) get urges, but so far I have been able to avoid getting back into the habit. Whatever you decide to do, whether it-s the patch or cold turkey or whatever, it-s going to take commitment on your part. Ain-t gonna be easy and I wish you good luck.

I quit smoking recently and I need to go to the dentist. I don-t want him to know I ever smoked because it-s embarrassing. How long would it take for the signs of my folly to be erased? I smoked about a year and have quit about two weeks.
Why would you deem it necessary to try to fool your dentist? Are you an adult? Face your mistakes and embrace them. You only learn through them! Hey, you-ll even get praise when you tell the dentist the truth for the willpower to quit!

Quitting is a great thing and many have gone through it. You can try slinking off to another dentist you don-t care about and have your teeth professionally cleaned. Clean your mouth out every nigth for a week or two with baking soda and water. Clean all your clothing, car, bedding, flooring, curtains and walls to try to remove all traces of smell there.

But to be really honest. A non smoker can smell and ex smoker pretty easily. Takes a good year to get completely out of your system. And until your teeth get professionally cleaned, it-s gonna be noticeable on there as well.

No one was perfect growing up. Everyone did something stupid. Some things are stupider than others, but that-s why we give our youth a pass on stupidity and dont- allow theri records to follow them around. Even if you are in early 20-s, you are still young enough to be known as a youth. It-s when you hit about 25 that people expect less stupidity...but not everyone really grows up. Some just grow older but never wiser. You already show that you are growing wiser and that is important. Congrats!!! 2 weeks is a short time, so beware of the pitfalls that can come. You-ve gotten some great answers, but I need to add something. PLEASE do tell your dentist and hygienist that you are a previous smoker. They should be doing an oral cancer exam on all of their patients, but if they know you used to smoke it will make it that much more important.

Also, if you do have stain from smoking it will make it easier for them to personalize their advice for your situation if you tell the truth about where it came from. For example, if you say the stain is from drinking Pepsi they will talk about making sure it is sugar free and how soda can effect your oral health. It will not be the best advice for you. Please just tell the truth. Healthcare providers should not be judgemental so you should have nothing to worry about.

Again, CONGRATULATIONS on quitting! It is a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud of yourself.
Im to say that it will take years. My dad used to do the same, and all the tar and chemecals bleed into his gums. This is a long process. He smoked since a teen and qiut at age 39. He easily controlled his smoking, 1 pack per week! But anyways, according to his phycology, it will stay on for the rest of his life. As for you im sure you smoked at a lesser life span than he did and it should take at least 3 years. Im sorry if your extreemy discouraged, but you stopped early which will make the healing process WAY more faster! =)
How about trying the teeth whitening strips that are available in most drug stores? Congratulations on quitting smoking! I actually don-t see how the dentist could really tell you were a smoker. If your teeth are discolored, it could be from too much coffee drinking etc. How would he know what caused the discoloration?
Smoking turns your teeth yellow over time.... that-s permanent, unless you use some type of whitener.

However, if you only smoked for a year, your teeth shouldn-t be too bad (unless you drink lots of coffee or soda.) So your dentist may not notice.

Either way... You-ve already quit, so you don-t have anything to be embarrassed about. If he says something about it, just tell him you stopped. He may only mention it to sell you some type of whitening treatment, in which case you may accept or decline.

How does one quit smoking when your wife smokes, ALL your friends smoke (and thoroughly enjoy it)!, If im not in the environment i have no problems but once im slammin a beer with the buddies and their all blowing smoke in my face i can-t resist!, Don-t ask me to divorce my wife and lose all my friends of 30 years!, Short of this i say it-s impossible or damn close to it!!!!!!!!!
i gave up smoking , just by luck. i went to get some acupuncture done for my back once,. and in passing conversation, the lady asked me did i smoke, and i said, yes, but trying to cut down or give them up. no sooner had i those words said, she added a few extra needles into my ear department. one week later, craving and want for fags had left me. and im grand since. maybe try something like that,. good luck.

My husband gave up whilst I still smoked and because I and his friends knew how hard it was for him, we all agreed not to smoke around him. If we were at home, I would go outside or into another room (with the window open) to smoke. If your wife and friends care for you, they will support you as much as they can and not smoke around you. By the way, 5 years later, I too gave up smoking and it was the best thing I ever did. Good Luck and keep at it. Maybe your wife will give up too.
Your wife and friends love you, so I am sure that they would make an effort to see your success. However, you may have to stop going to the bars and find a healthier activity to do with your friends. As for your wife, ask her to smoke outside for a couple of months until you get better control with your addiction. Quitting smoking is all about will power. If you really want it, believe it or not, you have the ability inside you to quit right now. Let your new baby (congrats!) stand for inspiration to quit. Use the patch but make sure you control yourself. If you dont smoke for 3 days, you will stop about 85% of the cravings. Also, try keeping yourself busy. Chew gum, eat, tap your feet, etc.
Try sitting down and smoking a whole pack without stopping. You will become so sick you will not be able to smoke again.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I would have to say cold turkey. Try using gum, that helped me.

cold turkey. write a list of reasons to not smoke and put it on your fridge. lung cancer, second hand, stinks, bad teeth, costs lots of money, make you die quicker, ash trays are icky and dangerous, not a good role-model, etc. etc. and just be proud of yourself for doing it!
My boyfriend is 22 and he has been smoking since 15, I been wanting him to quit so bad..but he isn-t ready. You have to wait till you-re ready and if you are then I suggest:

1.Put mustard seeds on the lungs and tape them with plaster, also rub the spot.

Acupuncture combined with hypnotherapy is what worked for me. Chewing on real black licorice helps. A pharmacist once told me there was something in it that mimicked nicotine.
First figure out how much you are smoking and when. Then VERY slowly cut down.
So say you are smoking 7 cigs a day, cut it down to 6 a day and keep it at that until that is no big deal. Then cut down to 5 until it is no big deal.
The time period is different from person to person but it could be a week, a couple of weeks or a month or two.
You really have to shoot to succeed with this.
So when you are down to one a day, the next step should just be going a day, then maybe two days and working for multiple days in a row before reaching a week.
Also, figure out if there is a trigger such as smoking while you are drinking alcohol or drinking coffee.
See if you can cut out one of those. If you can-t, then make sure you don-t get to drunk -- inhibitions will be down, and try to be very aware of your weakness while partaking in these activities. If it is standing around others who are smoking, remove yourself from that, and make smoking a solitary thing. Don-t allow yourself the social aspect of smoking. Once you quit for a while, the smell will be gross. But at first, it might be a bit inviting. Don-t be tempted, walk away.
remember the goal, you want to quit for yourself and your child.
It will be very hard for a while. Especially after you are down to no cigarettes a day (whether for just a couple of days or all the time, see above) For a while you will still crave cigarettes. But it will get easier.
The hardest thing is to not slip. Keep the goal in mind. The longer you have gone without, the easier it will become.
Always remember what your triggers are, and remember that if you want it and have been off for a while, you don-t want to step back to having to quit again.
This is tough, but if you want to -- you will do it. But you won-t be able to succeed unless you want to, and you recognize it is difficult, but something that is do-able.

Probably where your lungs are trying to clean themselves up from all the stuff from your previous smoking. I don-t have asthma but when I quit for the first month or two I coughed up brown mucous all the time it was horrible. You have little things in your lungs that clean them over night as you rest and when you smoke it destroys them so when you stop smoking they have to restore themselves causing it to be hard to breathe and it causes you to cough up a lot of brownish mucous. Yeah, that was confusing my bad :P

EDIT:

But yeah, I-d definitely tell the doctor. Until then try going into the bathroom and turning your shower completely hot and keep the door closed. The steam should help your lungs break up the mucous so you can get it out making it easier for you to breathe.

yes, your lungs are clearing themselves and for a few weeks, you-ll actually cough MORE and get rid of MORE mucous, so I can see where you would have to use the inhaler more frequently. has anyone else been through this? is there anything i can do to improve my concentration. i have something really important to write requiring the most concentration ive ever needed and ive lost the ability to concentrate nearly all together. i feel like smoking again!!

to improve ur concentration, i chewed gum it took my mind off it.
throw any left over cigarettes away
and lock your lighter away
also get people to support u and if u reach for a cigarette make them tell you NO! sternly.

Its nicotine withdrawal and you are reaching the end of it, dont smoke again or you will have to do through withdrawal another time.
Stick at it and slow down, you need to take something to slow your system down as its agitated because it needs nicotine.
You can either go to the doctors for something or you could try taking some paracetamol, I know it sounds daft but it sends signals to the brain that help with pain control so you are less likely to be agitated.
I gave up smoking a month ago now and I still fancy a cig so it takes a long time for your head to stop wanting one as in 3/4 days the nicotine withdrawal will start to ease.

If the concentrating is getting too hard to do, maybe you should see a doctor and get nicotine patches. Or depending on where you are in the world, maybe a pharmacy or hospital can give you nicotine patches for free.

My housemate found she had to replace smoking with chewing for almost two months, the stress was that much. Not one pencil in my house was spared by her.

Get the help, and do not give in to having a smoke again, your three days down, it may get a bit harder but smoking is unhealthy and you are better to be not smoking.
Yeah its awful, I gave up three weeks ago and the first couple of days I went through really hard periods of just wanting a cigarette. Take five Min-s and just remind yourself again why you quit in the first place and realise that you WONT enjoy the cigarette if you do have one.

His lung condition (spontaneous pneumothorax) can be very serious. Doctor-s orders are NO SMOKING. My son has cut down but not completely stopped.
Keep him busy. Create an environment that does not allow smoking. Every day he should wash the dishes, vacuum the house, dust, clean the toilet, do the laundry, wash all the cars, etc.
Make him physically understand that his behavior is unacceptable. You run the show. You are the parent...show him who is boss.
He-s 16! Where/how is he getting cigarettes? Cut off his supply and his money. ....You could also try taking photos of him a LOT...and when he asks why you-re doing that, tell him, -So I-ll have something to remember you by...-
I dont know but make him quit now...before it gets even more difficult to put them down.

it stinks under my ball more is this normal i never noticed the smell before ?
When your smoking your nose is insensitive to odors. Now that you-re quiting, you-re sense of smell is getting better. The odor might be there before but you didn-t realize it.
Honestly, you can probably just smell a lot better now that you aren-t smoking and don-t have the constant scent of smoke stuck up your nose.

its been 4 months and my allergies are going crazy... I feel that its worse now than when i was smoking....Has anyone else experienced this? and dont worry im never going to consider smoking again.... smoking sucks and I never want to be a slave to the cigarette again.... oh an if you do have an allergy problem do you use zyrtec or claritin? I am currently using claritin but i dont think its working anymore. please share your thoughts....

See an Allergist a doctor that specializes in allergies.He will test you for WHAT you are allergic for so you can avoid the allergen-s,and give you the best advise. Remember that in spring there is much pollen in the air and that can be part of the problem.You even bring pollen into your house on your clothes and on your hair.So you will be exposed to it even indoors. You can smell things again. Talk to your doctor about a med that might be better than anything you can get otc. Generic Benadryl has always worked fine for me, but my allergies don-t act up often and I tend to only have to take something a few times a year, when exposed to a particular allergen.
As a Doc slipping back into the smoking can happen.
To prevent it try Chantix

im currently trying to quit smoking, i live in the toronto area. Can anyone recommend any brands that r not as strong or addictive as most brands? (i do kno all brands r bad for u) but i dont wanna smoke the menthols.. or the extra extra light stuff? but does anyone have any recommomendations to a less addictive or lighter brand of cigarettes to help quit with?
You can try Ultra Lights but I would start using Nicoderm patches. I-ve been on them for a few weeks and haven-t smoked. I-m trying to quit too.
I quit smoking last year in February and I feel great. If I can quit anyone can. The real trick to quitting smoking is to simply quit cold turkey. You will feel better in a couple of weeks and then you never look back. Check out the www.whyquit.com website and read the on-line material. If you try to reduce your nicotine intake you will only prolong the addiction and make yourself miserable. Just quit cold turkey and as the book says Never Take Another Puff!!! (No gum, patches or anything with nicotine).

at least 4 times a year - I would catch a cold easily too. I feel a lot healthier now, what do you take to stay healthy.
I have not smoked in 2 years and I feel GREAT! It-s the best thing I-ve ever done. To keep my immune system in check, I drink -Emergen-C- with juice
a small glass of whiskey every day and I never get sick maybe once a year from cedar allergies , but that is generally fatigue from depressed immune system
yes. when you first quit you caugh up icky grey stuff a lot because the hairs in your lungs are able to move more and get that stuff out. then after a week or so you start feeling better and you get sick a lot less aften.
I quit in 2000 and I stopped having chronic bronchitis almost immediately ! I also had problems with asthma and I have not had an attack since I quit ! I love drinking Orange Juice... lots of vitamin -C- !

Like lung wise? its been like half of a year since i had a cigarette, would it mess my lungs up inhaling again or would i be alright? I was smoking for about 3 years off and on
Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.
Can you really smoke just one?!?

Each time you quit it gets harder. Any time I feel tempted to light up, I remember how hard it was to quit and say to myself -I sure don-t want to go through that again.-

It wont hurt you, but I dont recommend it. It may make you start smoking again. Im trying to quit right now, and its tough. If I had one, Id want another, and another.
