How long did it take you to quit smoking and what was your motivation? -

It took me 4 long months but i-ve finally given up smoking. I quit for my daughter and to save money.
Decided on a set date i would not smoke anymore and never have since. It-s been 11 years this past march 17. Motivation.. 3 different Dr-s told me it was not the right time I was already under more than enough stress, wait a while. Ha! I just had to prove them wrong!

What is condersidered long term use (like how many years)? I have been smoking it since just before I turned 16 and i turn 19 next month. I-m trying to stop smoking it now, because I-m still young and have a great girlfriend which I plan on marrying someday. How many of you have given up pot and how did it go for you??

Thanks everyone

-Will
Man that aint long term ******. I started when i was like 16, and im 35 now...i dont think it had anything to do with my divorce, i have a decent job as an engineer and i live in a nice detroit suburb, everything in moderation and you will be ok.

By the way....if your gf is really special, and she objects to the herbage, dont be an idiot, give up the herbage
well i have smoked pot for likr 7 years and i got busted the other day with a 1/2 ounce so i need to quit as well so if u find out let me know ty *Peace*
i have the same problem as you, man! except it-s...........nevermind
I was a 70-s hippie and the pot then was pretty mellow compared to what is around now, still I quit when I felt like the world was moving on without me. I do know a friend still smokes and both his children have special needs.
Good show for taking the first step. If you reallt want o stop then you will do.

Regards

Clive

Whats a good way to quit smoking cigarettes without going crazy? -

I smoke Newports 100-s if that helps your answer.
I smoked Marb lights for 13 years - so did my husband
We just got so fed up we just quit
No drugs or anything
It was hell, but worth it
It-s been 1.5 years and we still don-t smoke
I had a lot of help from this website

www.whyquit.com
As an RN, I know that medically and statistically speaking, the most effective method to quit smoking and stay smoke-free is to quit cold turkey. No nicotine patches or gum or any of that garbage! If you truly make up your mind to quit, you will. You can either -try- to quit or -do- quit. If all you do is -try-, you leave yourself open for failure. You are a doer! Your mind is more powerful than you know. Label yourself as a non-smoker and move forward with your life! Leaving ANY addiction will cause stress in your life. It is up to you how much you allow that stress to control your life. YOU are in control of your emotions!
Start by slowing down and not quitting all together. Day by day just decrease the amount, even if it-s only by one cig. Set small goals that you know you can achieve and stick to them. The feeling of accomplishment makes you want to keep going. Also reward yourself with something else that you enjoy when you have met a goal. I bought myself a new pair of shoes or something if I stuck to my plan a week at a time. Also gum chewing helped me... Happy trails and good luck!
The only way is to go cold turkey. No more excuses to just have one. Some people who smoke have an oral fixation so you may need to keep your mouth busy- suck on lollipops, chew gum, or even eat sunflower seeds. Try to stay away from others who smoke and be proud of yourself for everyday you go without the cancer stick! Good luck on your journey!
Cut back slowly. Quitting cold turkey could make you go crazy and want one right away, and then you-re hooked again. Cutting back, you just cut back a little each week until there is no more.
Put chewing gu in the place where you use to put your ciggsy. Then everytime you go to have a cigeratte yo can have gum instead.
Visit http://www.stopsmoking4good.org or e-mail ContactOwner@stopsmoking4good.org Its a great product!
every time you want to smoke electrocute yourself
chew gum....alot of gum....or suck on candy...try to have something in yopur mouth all the time....but no cigarettes
I was a smoker for 10 years. I just recently quit. (today marks two weeks and 1 day since my last cig!). It has been very difficult. I actually did use the patches, but found that they were most beneficial during the first few days, when the cravings were at the worst. They really helped control those and keep me sane. After the first three days once the chemical dependency was kinda over, the habit part of smoking came in. I felt sooo weird. Like I was missing something, or forgetting something all the time. I was going absolutely nuts. I ended up cutting a straw the same length of a cig, and I just sucked on that and held it as if it were a cig, and that helped. Also - I got some dumdum lollipops. =) Those were great for times when I was in public or around people where having a -cigarette straw- would appear silly. lol I had -tried- to quit before, and failed. But this time I KNOW I will stay quit. It is very mental also - you have to have your mindset that you ARE going to quit. Let your friends and family know that you want to quit also - you-d be surprised at how much support and encouragement they will provide. =) Good luck!!!

I quit smoking 4 months now and have been fine. In the past week Ive been wanting a smoke in the worst way, -

I-m sure it will pass but will I be having these problems for the rest of my life? Will I ever be a non smoker? Is this normal?
I quit 25 years ago, and still get an occasional craving. Rarely, like once a year or so. It is truly an incredibly strong mental addiction.
BTW, I told myself 25 years ago I would start smoking again when I turned 70, and I still plan on it.
Yes, it will pass. I-ve known many people that have quit cold turkey with great success. You may want to try containing your nicotine cravings by becoming active. Try working out (aerobic and anaerobic - weight lifting). You-ll appreciate the overall better health you-ll experience: working out and no longer easily winded because of smoking. Best wishes!
Come on, you-re not going to throw away 4 months of doing without, are you??
We-re better than that!
Yes I am sure it is normal, however it is important not to give into the urge. All the hard work you have done to be smoke free for 4 months , you would have to do over again, and it is not worth it. Stay smoke free, drink a lot of water chew gum, and stay smoke free. In time you will not be able to stand the smell of tabacco or smoke. You just need some more time, to breathe fresh air, and take good care of your lungs. Keep on keeping on. Stay out of areas where there is smoking
This is quite normal and while the desire will pass, you can expect such flare-ups for many years.

I encourage you to evaluate what is going on in your life right now. Are you under a particular amount of stress, change, anxiety, etc.? Something that could be triggering your need for a cigarette. If you can identify the -trigger,- you can logically develop some alternatives to cigarettes for dealing with it.
Yes this is normal...... when you feel the craving inhale and exhale 8 times then drink a glass of water by the time you do this the craving will have gone drink plenty of water to flush the nicotine from your body alternatively try nicorette patchs.

Has anyone used Changes International, Inc. to quit smoking? -

I saw a ad in my local paper for hypnosis to stop smoking and I was just wondering if anyone out there has ever done this. I really want to quit. I have tried the patches without much luck. Thanks for any and all info.
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

THE BEST WAY TO QUIT SMOKING? SMOKED FOR 3 YEARS? -

IVE BEEN SMOKING FOR 3 YEARS NOW. I HATE SMELLING LIKE CIGS AND I JUST WANNA QUIT FOR MY HEALTH ALSO. WHATS THE BEST AND EASIEST WAY????
I smoked for about 5 years, had on average about 2 cigarets per day. when i quit, the first two weeks or so I had some pretty strong cravings, but after that I really had no cravings. It-s been about 12 years since I quit and have had no desire to smoke again. It is amazing how easily the cravings completely vanish if you make it past the first 2 weeks, (and that is pretty much what I have heard from ex smokers, it takes about 2 weeks for the cravings to go away) and I also agree with the person above me, it-s much much harder for people who have been smoking like two packs a day for decades, those are the people who need extra help to stop. your 3 years isn-t long.
it will be no problem for you to stop. Don-t know where you live, but everywhere now it is very difficult to smoke in bars, restaurants etc. 3 years is nothing, it-s so hard when you have smoked for 20 yrs. or more. My advice is just to stop. no patches, or pills, just a few days and it-s over. Chew gum, and drink a glass of water when you feel like a smoke. Then when you have a wonderful shower with great shower gel, it will be such a great feeling, and you will smell so good. good luck. Wish i had stopped sooner!!
u just stop when u want 2 simple...
(sigh).. not dat simple, when u feel like a smoke tink -bout CANCER, visualize urself on a road wit d sign readin -point of no return- 5 sticks away 4rm where u stand, tell urself dat u control urself and not some stick loaded wit nicotine and tobacco designed 2 rob u of ur money and then kill u in d most premature - painful way possible..
try stopping and chew gum instead.

How do you get someone to quit smoking? -

How do you get someone to quit smoking? -

You can-t. Only they can do it and if you let them know you want them to quit that-s about all you can do.
you can-t quite make some one quit, if they don-t want to. but once they have agreed that they should stop smoking, there-s a few different methods you could try. some smokers can just cold turkey it (give it up straight away)

you could try nicotine patches. then there-s through the help of a medical professional, by going to appointments to measure how much carbon something or another you have in your lungs - it helps you by helping you quit slowly.
i just quit 2 weeks ago, been smoking for 9 years... since i was very young.. anyway i read Alan cars eazy way to stop smoking, its a really good book it is the best book to read to quit smoking it explains how smoking keeps you addicted, and telling people that it does such and such to their health and they are stupid for doing it just doesn-t help because a non-smoker cant really comprehend what the smoker doesn-t comprehend himself. the smoker knows they are destroying their health. but due to brain washing they believe smoking is stress relieving and relaxing from subliminal messages. it does relieve stress.ONLY the stress of not smoking while your body is draining off nicotine every time you butt out, then when you smoke again your levels are raised, your partially relieved of the stress of lowering nicotine levels and then you start weening off again, seconds after and your stress rises again. but it is only there because you are smoking in the first place. so when you give up you are actually losing nothing..and gaining freedom. all this is explained very well in Alan cars -eazy way- to stop smoking...
It would be very hard if that person doesn-t want to quit themselves. Really the only thing you can do is tell them how much you want them to stop smoking and tell they you will be there for them if they decided to. Buy them some patches and some gum. Just DON-T preach them to death they will just resent you.
Im a smoker, i know all about the health issues and such and i wish i never ever started, but i was young - stupid. If someone kept jabbering on at m to quit it would just get me angry - if anything i would smoke more to do their head in - pathetic but true.
I want to quit dont get me wrong but i dont feel ready in myself to give up yet, its not easy believe me, when im stressed, angry or upset the first thing i do is reach for a smoke, if i havent got them my brain goes nuts. You cant get someone to quit, you may want them to but you cant always have your own way! You have to really want it and feel emotionally ready. People will do things in their own time. =)
you don-t. they will only quit when they want to. same goes for drug addicts, obese people, abused women who won-t leave the abuser, really any self destructive behavior, you can-t make a person do anything, in fact the more you push, the further they will push you away.
I agree with the person above me. It is all about if they want to quit or not, same with if a person wants to lose weight and so on. Everyone has free will as well as will power. However, as a drastic measure, I would personally hide all the cigarette packs they buy - although be prepared for HUGE arguments! But I have thought of doing that to my husband, he smokes too much.
YOU don-t, a smoker has to want to quit, and when they do then they quit. Nothing you can do or say will make them quit.
You can-t make anyone quit. The best you can do is present them with information that might make them want to quit.
keep spanking there butt if you see them smoking

they-ll quit eventually :D
you should convience them telling them how smoking affects ur health etc show them some pictures of what smoking can do to ur body (go on google and u-ll find some pretty gross pics prolly)
you cant force someone to do something they dont want to do
steal their cigarettes

How can I make my Older Sister quit smoking? -

How can I make my Older Sister quit smoking? -

Everything I say she ignores.
You can-t. Smokers no the risks they face, it says so right on the box that they are going to kill you eventually. The smoker has to want to quit. Until they want to, nothing you say or do will make them stop.
You cant do anything. It has to be her decision, there-s no other way to do it. If you don-t wanna quit trying and are worried for her health start sending her emails with pictures of lungs with emphysema because of smoking or the pictures of those people with holes on their throat... I did it to my dad and he is still smoking, but it made me feel good knowing that it creeped him out and I did all I could.

At the end it has to be HER decision to save her life.
Get an electronic cigarette. You get to -smoke- without all the bad chemicals except nicotine. You can even get no nicotine cartridges so you feel like your smoking (blowing out smoke, holding the cigarette) but your not. Trust me on this one.

You can see videos and such here

http://www.buy-electroniccigarettes.com

You cannot MAKE her do anything... your support and help could aid her to stop however the stress from someone always nagging about stopping smoking makes them smoke more! (i-m going through this with my mom!)

__________
I do things like ask her not to smoke around me.. (second hand kills) and take her out to eat if she can go half the day without smoking...

the biggest things are when they wake up (not to smoke) and after they eat... also every time they get into a car.. so be supportive and maybe you can look up actual chemicals in the ciggs.. and show her evidence of the poisons that are in them...

________
Just because everyone smokes doesn-t make it good for you and remember she has to WANT to quit! ( I dont suggest the smoking aids but simply replace the smokes with candies to suck on... every craving just suck on a mint or jolly rancher!) good LUCK!
You can-t it-s one of those things you have to do on your own.

Depending on how strong her mind is the easier it will be to quit.

I recently quit.

But some people lack the will power and just smoke for the rest of their lives....leave it be
one i thing i have always wanted to try with my dad ( He drinks a six pack a day and chews tobbacco) is just take them and throw them away. Of Course he would beat my *** if i did that even if it was to help him.....
at this point it is a decision she has to make on her own, she may be addicted and quiting is harder than you think, just try to encourage her like, -you dont need that thing- or something like that
This is an easy one.
You can-t.
This is like any other habit. A person has to do it for themselves.
Nicotine IS addicting,btw.
well then its time to go see a consuler, she must stop smoking and does your parents know? then they should help too. Also you can buy stuff like Nicorette or other things, show her the facts what happens when you smoke
When she is gasping for her last breath in a hospital bed while her family watches, she might think about things would have been had she listened. SMOKING IS A DEATH SENTENCE, NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO IT.
you can-t. you really need to get over the idea of being able to control ANYTHING that another person does, you simply can-t.
tie her down to a chair and put in about 6 hours worth of videos that shows what can happen if you keep smoking when you get older
You can-t.
It-s her choice.
She-ll stop when she wants to stop.
Try hypnosis.
u cant.

you might try to find some graphic pix of smoker-s lungs and strokes on-line and show them to her.
make sure u tell her to her face or tell someone to tell her to stop

What is the most effective way to quit smoking? -

What is the most effective way to quit smoking? -

There are a few differnt effective ways, you have to find the one that works for you.
There is:

Cold Turkey
Gradual slow down
Chewing gum in place of smoking
Wearing a rubber band and snapping yourself when you want to smoke.
Chantix - Prescription to stop smoking
Nicotine Patch
Hypnosis

I-m sure there are a lot others but those are the most used.

Good Luck! It-s not easy.
I used a product called -Wellbutrin-. It is used to elavate one-s mood. I took it for 2 weeks and it killed the nicotine craving. I haven-t smoked since (8 years now).

A prescription is needed to obtain it.
wil power. think positive not negative.. think that smokin is bad for you and your health and it can hurt the environment..

positive thinking !

best answer please? i really need points.. thnxx
There is no -best way,- as different methods work for different people.

When I quit smoking (the second time), I
a) used the patch.
b) made cigarette analogs. I took an unused cigarette filter, pushed it into a straw, and cut the straw to mimic the lenth of a cigarette. I made several of these.

Whenever I got the urge to smoke, I would take one of my fake cigarettes, hold it like I would a real cig, and took drags off of it as I would a real cig. The patch took care of the nicotine, the straw/cig helped me to FEEL like I was smoking. Eventually, I was able to need it less and less. It looked sort of funny to be driving along hanging a red, yellow, and white straw out the window and flicking imaginary ash off the end of it.

I do not know if it will work for you, but the straw method is realatively cheap to try. It heally does help to have the patch at the same time, however.

How do I Quit Smoking?? -

How do I Quit Smoking?? -

I smoke around 2 cigarettes each day..... The main issue right now is that I live with ma friends and since they are chain smokers Iam unable to stop.. And another is that if I quit it for 2 or 3 days then the urge for smoking is extremly high and uncontrollable.....

?????
You have to get past that 3rd day, then it will be better, but the craving will still be there. Don-t allow yourself to touch them. I had cravings for years after I quit and one day I got a pack of herbal (legal lol) cigarettes and smoked the whole pack (over many days) It had all the nastiness of cigs without the nicotine reward, I never had a craving after that.
Thats the withdrawl but you are doing good, try and stay away from the house keep a window open in your room.

I only smoke when I drink. I have no desire to smoke any other time. How do I quit smoking? -

The obvious answer would be to quit drinking. I-m young and I-m Irish, so fat chance of that happening. Can any of you give some good advice on this? I know of a lot of people like myself who only smoke when they-re out drinking, and have no desire whatsoever to light one up at any other time. Patches and nicorette gum, etc., therefore, I think really wouldn-t apply to people like us, because we don-t desire a cigarette any other time except when we are out on night on the town. So how can people like us resist the urge to smoke once we get a few drinks in us?
First of all, the only way to fight it is to put a little drill sergeant in your head and yell at yourself whenever you get the urge to smoke when you-re drinking. I-m young and Irish too, and I smoke. But I quit for 3 months once and the whole time that-s what I had to do. You hafto push yourself or you won-t be able to do it. And second of all, you shouldn-t have a problem quitting since you-re not an addict. If you only smoke when you drink I would only worry about it when you get cravings and you-re sober. Yes, you-ll still be doing damage to your lungs, but nothing serious enough to worry about. Just make sure that you don-t keep this up for too long, because someday you WILL get addicted, and take it from a girl who smokes almost a pack of cigs a day...it will RUIN your life!
you have partially answer you own question, don-t drink or use gum patch etc....well all that is really left is, plan plan plan..you know you-ll want to smoke right! and you don-t want to right? then the plan , you are aware of you problem, first and most important, don-t take cigarettes with you, keep the lighters at home too. write your self a note and put it in you purse....don-t smoke that cigarette tonight..I-m here to socialize so get up a move around to keep your mind off the cigs!! when you get tipsy, is when you-ll have your biggest challenge. this is the time to go home...do this a couple of outings and you will break that drink smoke cycle..after a few times stay longer and longer....good success to you, anita
You know the answer and choose not to follow through, so you will probably continue to smoke. When you decide to quit, you will.
You-re right...don-t drink would be the obvious answer. Is there a smoking ban in your area or is smoking allowed at all pubs/bars, etc.? I think smoking bans help people like you (and I wish it would have come sooner to help people like me, unfortunately, I-ve slipped back to a nearly full time smoker). What you can do (and I-ve done this before) is when I-ve gone out, not bring my own smokes, but rather bum them off of others. That-s a sure fire way to piss people off so they won-t give them to you.
Dunk a patch in your drink - gin, tonic, ice, lemon and a patch - it-s crazy enough to catch on.
dont drink
don-t drink?
Honestly smoking when you drink really isnt that big a deal, clearly you enjoy smoking when you drink so I would continue to smoke, as long as you are drinking. If not than go to places or hang out with other people that dont smoke. Alot of bars arent letting you smoke inside anymore so that can help alot, it helped me to quit.
Find something else to do while you drink... eg chew gum, play a game etc.....
I-m not sure exactly, though if I were going to be humorous, I-d say that whenever you get the urge to smoke, have a drink instead.

However, maybe if you got in the habit of sticking something else in your mouth when you want to smoke (and I mean that in a clean way); like a peanut or something.

The obvious answer is gum, but it doesn-t really mix well with drinking, but think in that vein.
Try to not drink so much (if at all possible) don-t buy cigarettes so that you have them on you for when you want to help, all your mates join together and try to stop, or go to a doctor!
I was always the same way, and even tried to smoke sober and couldn-t handle it without hacking my lungs out.
Now I quit drinking and don-t smoke!
I have the same problem except mine-s not when I drink (even tho it is a problem with me. It-s actually when I-m under a lot of pressure or lots of stress about a situation or my bills.

I-m not sure that any advice from me would be good. I just know what works for me is to try my best to eliminate the stress so I-m not tempted. But it-s hard. I-ve tried sitting downwind of ciggy smoke so I can get the smell but not actually have the cig in hand. That helps more than you know but it-s still not a good solution.

The best I can offer you is determination. Keep your healthy goals in mind for yourself and do whatever it takes to work this problem out. I can drink now at home and it-s not so bad because I don-t want to smoke. Now, when I actually go to a bar, I smoke like a train. So, I don-t go to bars as much anymore. I-ve found other things to keep my mind occupied so I don-t miss going to a bar at all now.

Good luck and hope I-ve helped!
well, depending on where you live, you may not have that option soon. Here in Houston they are about to pass a law that will not allow smoking inside of bars or night clubs.

He is smoking over two packs a day!
make a packet up of pictures of what smoking can do to him and tell him u want him to be around for a long time because u luv him! i worked for me! good luck!
My mother is the same way. She just was in the hospital because of smoking, and yet she bought a pack as soon as she got out....Simply ask him, if he wants to live to see you get married, or if he wants grandchildren one day, or all the money he would save not smoking and not having doctors appointments in the future. Google the pro-s of quitting. I personally suggest trying the Commit lozenges.
ask him if he likes you and if he will say yes then ask him if he doesnt want to stop smoking for you! if he wants to live long, and tell him how much money he could save if he would stop smoking! maybe it would help! good luck!
ive been trying for years now and it hasn-t worked!

Will the medicine quot;Chantixquot; actually help u quit smoking? -

it depends on the person.
Yes, my sister and my brother-in-law both used it to stop. Both were long-time smokers as well.
I hope to God it does. I am on day 9 of Chantix. I find myself getting busy and not thinking about getting a cig (a great thing!)But I eventually do smoke one when I think, -Oh, I haven-t had a cig for awhile- (a bad thing!)

It is the behavioral habits that are stopping me right now. One more week on Chantix to make sure it is good in my system and I will stop buying them. Like all other long time smokers the physical cravings are what really stop you from quiting. They are just overwhelming. But the Chantix does take away that physical feeling of wanting to put your head through a wall when you can-t have a cig.

Side effects are some sickness in the stomach but nothing too bad. My Doc has high hopes. He said he has seen 99% of his patients quit with Chantix. Even some hard core old guy smokers that he thought would never make it but they did. Try it!

I will update in like 2 weeks. Say a prayer! If I could go one full day without that would be a miracle.
My step mother has benn taking it for 6 weeks and she hasn-t smoked since she started. We-ll she how she does when she goes off.

I need some tips on how to quit smoking because my mum smokes and everyone hates it and the smell? -

she has been smoking for 22 years and quit last year but started again [she blames it on others]
I don-t know your situation, but I would assume that you have asked her to quit previously with no luck. I did a little search and found a program that is devoted to your situation (Children Helping And Motivating Parents to Stop Smoking). I hope their website helps, sorry I could not be of more personal help. Best of luck!!!!!!!
i have just stopped after years of smoking i got some patches from the doctor, also he gave me this little nicorette inhaler they work wonders but your mom has got to stop because she wants to, only then she will do it
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
A friend-s technique was to put anti smoking posters up all over the house (smoking is glamorous with an ugly picture, pictures of smoke dieased lungs, and posters like that) like in the kitchen cabinets, on the inside of thte bathroom cabinet and reminder notes in the silver drawers (I love when you dont- smell of cigarettes mom)....

took time, but the message was sent and received.

the only person who can make your mom stop is your mom
every time you want a cigerette smell a old ash tray with ash and butts in and you WILL NOT want oneany more. x good luck!
Perhaps the nicorette activestop program might help.

I quit smoking and all I do is eat Little Debbies! HELP!? -

LOL! For real! I-ve eaten two boxes within the last few days! And I-m 30 and don-t need to be doing this... maybe if I was 16 it would be ok. Should I get some suckers or chewing gum or something? Anyone else have this problem? I-ve heard people say, -I quit smoking and gained a lot of weight,- and now I know what they were talking about!
The only thing that worked for me was cardio exercise. That took my urge to smoke and eat away. Good luck though.
Thats really bad for you, all the trans fat.You should find an activty that interests you or chew sugarfree gum or something.
