I quit smoking 3 weeks ago and feel like im going through the DTs? -

Im on chantix and it helps but still feel nervous. Any suggestions to help get over it.
I find that breathing like I would if I were smoking a cigarette helps. You know in through pursed lips, hold for a few seconds, then out again through the mouth. I quit yesterday. I also run on the treadmill for 30 minutes, and that helps too. I think to myself, wow, soon I will be able to run faster without getting winded!
Ask dr for an anit anxiety drug to help with withdrawel

I used Ativan it was cheap
What?....what did you stop smoking???
Congradulations!!I know how hard it is but please hang in there! I quit about a year ago.I found that doing yoga helped me.The deep breathing and relaxation helped get me through.Just dont give up!You`ve made it this far.
ask you Doc. about Bupropion (Wellbutrin) it worked great for me! i quit Jan. 3rd of this year, for about a week i felt a little edgy, but then i would just go right to the weight bench or do something active and i felt fine......i feel great now! You can and WILL get through this and you will feel great! I promise.
Please whatever you do, do not go back to it! I quit for six months and then went back to it. You are going through dt. Your body craves the nicotine and the feeling that it gives you. You will also find that for the next six months you will be coughing up brown mucus. Your body is trying to get rid of the -nasties- that has built up in your lungs from the inhalation. All of this is normal and it will pass in several months. Each day gets better and you will have cravings at times when you are around those who smoke, see peeps on tv smoking and when you do activities that involved smoking; ex: going out...In time, these cravings will be nothing more than a habit. And habits are heard to break..but you can do it!
3 Weeks...Congrats keep up the good work...we quit 8 months ago...and to tell u the truth it was pure #### for a few months...but it got better as time went on...i had smoked for 19 years and my husband for even longer...now we feel so much better and treated ourselves to a trip to Vegas with the money we saved from not buying cigarettes...

Quit smoking? -

will someone please encourage me.. I need a little boost
Try to keep your hands busy hun. Sew, knit, write, whatever it takes. I learned to always have a pencil to -smoke-. At other times I chewed on licorice. Make it real hard to smoke by setting rules like no smoking in the house etc. (It was real hard smoking in the garage when it was - 10 degrees)
GL
will findout how much money you-ve wasted on them. I found out last night that I waste on average 200.00 a month on the crap. it helped me. try blow pops. you will have the hand to mouth motion and when you get done with it you will have the gum to help. the patches and gum didn-t help me as it was the motion. plus, if you want to, go back to school. with all of the work they give you in college, and if you work full time, you won-t have the time to smoke and you will probably forget about it althogether. I hope the best for you. I know I need all of the encouragement as well
All you have to do is go to the nearest hospital, visit someone in the ward with lung cancer, and after that thank your lucky stars you have decided to give it up.
You can do it, millions have.
You are awesome for quitting - I am on day 4 and it is a pain. But you know what I already feel better. I don-t know how far along you are, but I bet your future self would be very proud of you. The smoking bit is only in your mind - and you can do it!!!!! Don-t let the evil *** monkeys that make up big tobacco win!

Say it with me - F YOU PHILLIP MORRIS :)
Smoking is a nasty, expensive, stupid habit that demeans you in front of your peers and everyone else. The smoke is pure poison that slowly ruins your health.

Not one good thing can be said about smoking.

How-s that! Hang in there and good luck.

Quitting Smoking :(
Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
stop putting fags in your mouth.

No, seriously, you will probably have to try a couple of times, but the best advice i can give you, is to join a group, they are usually run by the council and are a great help, trying to give up on your own is a nightmare, but with support from others it is a lot easier. I used Zyban when i quit, so it does work for some, but again, your group advisor will go through everything with you.
Cravings only last a few seconds, and once you get past a couple of weeks it just gets easier.

Most important is to dis-associate yourself with the habit, eg, after eating don-t go and stand with friends who smoke, the same goes for when you are out drinking.
For a couple of months, it is better to miss out on a bit of conversation when friends go outside for a smoke, but it will be worth it in the end.

If you do find yourself back on the fags, don-t dispair, leave it a few days then start giving up again.
Stick a post- it on your pc that says. DONT GIVE UP GIVING UP. That will be a constant reminder to yourself.

Good luck.
i-ve swapped cigarettes for role ups, and as you can-t always just take one out at the busstop for example, you tend to smoke less, and get your body to get over it-s cravings, without depriving it.

I-ve done this, and eventually went down to smoking only 2 a day, and then decided I might as well stop, as I am not smoking to satisfy any cravings, but just out of habit. I-ve given up 3 months ago now, and don-t even crave it anymore.
There isn-t an easy way.
Try to pair up with someone else who also wants to give up and find a way of verifying that neither of you breaks the agreement.

Avoid alcohol, cups of coffee and everything else you associate with smoking.

Everyone is different but most people can-t cut down slowly, thinking that you will eventually stop. You have to say -NOW!- and never do it again. Like many other drugs, including heroin, once you have smoked it is easy to start by just smoking a few again. You never ever get the fact that you were hooked out of your system.

I had a friend who sucked on dried fruit whenever he wanted a cigarette. He did give up but he also got very fat :-)
1st you have to be sure you want to quit smoking.
2nd you have to be see yourself as a non smoker
3rd. See yourself in the pub or out for a meal and then see yourself being disgusted at the thought of smoking...

Its all about the way you see yourself, if you see yourself as a smoker then no matter what you do you will still be a smoker...

I learnt to quit from www.easytoquit.co.uk and it really helped me
As other people have said, the only way to give up is to stop altogether. There are lots of products on the market that are supposed to help. Personally I wouldnt bother . I used nicotine chewing gum for several months and found myself chewing 20 a day!! I then decided just to go cold turkey. It was hard for a week or so but I soon got used to it, But, if I-m honest, the one thing that really done the trick for me was seeing my friend die from emphysema, brought on from years of smoking, I-ve been smoke free for 8 years now and just know I will never smoke again.
I quit by being in hospital ICU for a couple of month so depending how you look at it that could be unlucky or lucky lol,
but my friends all quit by taking this medication called champix that was prescribed by the doc and it simply makes you not want to have a cigerret, simple as and it worked sooo yay! good for them
Hey

Just stop buying them. Next time you go to the supermarket don-t go over to the counter where they are, When you pay for your shopping you are at the other checkouts anyway so there is no need to go and get them.

Just don-t buy them.
Stop.......

How can I quit smoking? -

I have tried several ways such as -cold turkey-, cutting down, the patch. I can-t chew that gum that they have now. My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, and I really want to quit since it hit me so close to home. Anyone have any good (and new) suggestions?
hey i did the patch and it took three times before it was successful so give it another go . and good luck its been a year and four months now for me.
Study how and where and how much you smoke. Cut down little at a time, hang around places you have never smoked at and hang around there more. Give yourself time, by cutting down slow, it may take a year or so
There is a new prescription medication available now, call your Dr. and see if they prescribe it for you. I have heard that it works very well.
i went cold turkey myself decades ago. maybe you need to find a hobby that takes your mind off of the idle time you would spend on smoking.
Please smoke one stick less every day.
just go to a non smoking program

As anyone tried the new tablets to quit smoking(CHAMPIX), iv just got them from my doctor, do they work? -

cold turkey ........hard but it really works..........
They do work if you really want to give up smoking and us Champix with willpower. I know of 3 people who have tried them and all are back on the snouts even after completing the full course, best of luck.
please let me know if they do
i-ve had a lot of friends and family and take it with successful results, successful to the point where they dont want a cigarette anymore at all after just a couple weeks.
I used -Willpower- and it worked.
And cost me nothing :-)
My husband and brother in law and cousin all have been taking them and my husband has quit smoking after 3 weeks, my brother in law hasn-t smoked in a week and my cousin hasn-t smoked in 71/2 months now. They all say Chantix is great, but it gave them weird dreams.
yup of course the do, according to the drug company pfizer which is the biggest in the world, and costing the nhs millions of pounds,
the studies have shown it to be both effective ie it works compared to placebo and also very tolerable ie little or no side effects with it
Do you mean Chantix? If so, the only stats that I have are that about 40% of patients were able to quit after a period of a few weeks, as opposed to what I believe is about 18% on a placebo.
My Gran has been taking them for 3 weeks and has not had a cigarette since last Friday, she said she still gets the craving but nowhere near as bad, but she has found that the tablets make her feel a little sick just after she has taken them, but she said she sucks a mint sweet and it helps.

Good luck
No
After 40 years of smoking, my mum quit with champix after 2 days.

You can smoke while you use them, they are not a nicotine replacement.

She smoked the second day, and said it was disgusting, and hasn-t smoked (or coughed) since!
Do they work?????
BIG TIME!!!!
Everyone who wants to give up smoking should get them!
I have been taking them since early September and have not smoked at all (not even a crafty drag) since 09 September 2007.
Thats 8 weeks on Sunday 04 November - go me!
You have to want to stp smoking - but hey you-ve got a prescription for them so you must be serious.
1. Decide on a stop date
2. Keep smoking
3. Before you know it you will not know why you are smoking
and stop
The down side for me are the side effects:-
1. Queasiness
2. Indigestion
3.Dreaming - like nothing I have ever experienced
4. Flatulence
5. Waking up during the night
But hey I aint spending nearly £5 per packet on fags!
Hubby and I have both stopped with the help of Champix we no longer buy 70 fags a day - what a saving!!
The best bit???
We no longer Stink!!!!
Good Luck - you can do it!!!!!!!

Have you quit smoking? -

I am 35 and I have been smoking since I was 19. I really am thinking about quitting. Any suggestions how?
First, make an appointment with your doctor. He/She can review your smoking behavior and determine if and what stop smoking aid would be appropriate or helpful for you. Second, check out Nicotine Busters on Yahoo (
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Nic…
They have a wealth of information on smoking cessation. They also provide wonderful support. Third, check out
http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/…
this is a quiz to determine why you smoke. It might be helpful to take this quiz before you see your doctor.

Good Luck.

P.S. I smoked for 30+ years. I had my last cigarette on March 24, 2007
did u know every time u smoke 7 minutes each time comes off your life. That sentence should make you stop.
Yes. I quit cold turkey and it was painful for a while.

Good luck.
Smoking is as much habit as addiction. If you-ve smoked for 16 yrs, you-re certainly addicted to nicotine, but you also realize you smoke when hungry, angry, tired, bored, driving, on the phone, etc etc. All of those times and places are about the habit and probably account for the majority of the cigarettes you light in a day. So how do you deal with the habit... first you need a better understanding of when you smoke and what-s going on with your body in those moments prior to an urge. To explain this, I need to back track to when you started smoking and first became addicted to nicotine.

Nicotine is an extremely addictive substance and anyone who starts smoking with any regularity will soon become addicted. At it-s most basic, what that means is that when a smokers nicotine level drops, they begin to experience the first signs of nicotine withdrawal. Those signs are shallow breathing, general muscle tension (usually including neck and shoulders), foggy thinking, and a shift in mood (usually toward irritable or cranky). The signs of nicotine withdrawal become more and more intense until the smoker lights up and within 8-12 seconds nicotine has been carried through out the body and the signs of withdrawal have been relieved. It-s just that simple and just that fast... feel signs of withdrawal, light up and inhale, feel relief. Obviously it-s easy to see that it wouldn-t take long for that pattern to be established and become basic conditioned response. This leads us to the real problem with smoking and quitting... most of what we experience as -normal- life comes with physical signals that are just like nicotine withdrawal. And because smoking has become a conditioned response to -shallow breathing, muscle tension, foggy thinking, shifting mood-, we-ll reach for a smoke regardless of their source. (I include foggy thinking and shifting moods as physical cues because for smokers, these have a physiological base.)

Here are a couple of examples:
Anger - your breathing will become rapid and shallow, your body will become tense, depending on how angry you are your thinking may be very narrow focus and anger is nothing if not a sudden shift in mood. Did you light up when you were angry? Did you think you were smoking because you were angry? Or were you smoking -when- you were angry but -because- of the physical cues that come with anger?

Fatigue - may include slouched posture with shallow breathing, general muscle fatigue/ache/discomfort, thinking becomes sluggish, do you get impatient or cranky when tired? Did you light up when tired? Did you use cigs as a -pick me up- at just about every break during a task? Where you smoking to energize yourself or were you smoking -when- you were tired and -because- of the physical cues that come with fatigue?

Driving - we usually slouch behind the wheel so our breathing becomes shallow, we-re stuck in one position (at least one hand on the wheel, one foot on the gas/brake) and become more stiff/uncomfortable the longer the drive, attention must be on the road to some extent, and on today-s roads mood is very much a factor.
Did you smoke when you were driving? Could it be that you were smoking -when- driving and -because- of the physical cues that come with driving?

So how do we change this habit... we start by becoming aware of subtle physical cues that we-ve been connecting to a default smoking response. The easiest way to start to be aware is to use something like a kitchen timer to remind yourself to stop once an hour and pay attention... -is my breathing shallow? are there any tense muscles? what other physical cues can I identify?-. Within a short time (a few hours usually), you-ll find that you are more in tune with what your body needs at any particular moment. And as soon as you are more aware, you-re in a position to start providing appropriate responses. If your breathing isn-t as full as it could be, take a couple of proper deep breaths (check
http://deepsloweasy.com
for a breathing demo. Follow along until you-re comfortable) and do a bit of simple stretching (
http://howtostretch.com
and
http://ergocise.com
both have excellent basic stretching info).

There-s a bit more to this smoking cessation program, but this is where to start... discover what your body is telling you it needs and provide proper responses.
Congratulations on your decisions,

In addition to Lou-s suggestions, I-d say try to avoid hanging out with smokers. More likely it will make you want to smoke, which is not good.

Make new non smoker friends if necessary and do stuff with them.
It will get better with each new day!
Good luck and never give up!
I am now 67 years of age. I smoked since I was 17 years old. When I was 45 I decided to quit smoking. It was the hardest thing I have ever done!! But, with the help of Nicoret
gum and trial and error I finally succeeded. I have never been sorry. Now I am probably the worlds worst ex-smoker. I can-t stand to be around where anyone is smoking. The smell is awful and lingers in my nostrils forever. Try a help such as on of the anti-smoking gums, pills, etc. believe me it does help with the craving. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I want to quit smoking please advise me? -

Hi iam 28 years old man, still not married, i smoke a lot, i want to stop it ,, as i heard that i will effect my sexual life, is it truth, please advise me how can i stop it, iam afrid of the life after getting married, i want to have good life with my partner in all ways, till now i dont have any problem with sex, please advise me, so that i can quit smoking, thanks in advance,,,,,,,
i smoked for 25yrs - i never had a problem wi my sex life.I`ve given up smoking now (i`m 38) I used the champix tablets which take a couple of wks to get used to but they are realy good - don`t make you want to eat loads of food either.good luck giving up:)
I cant get myself to quit never mind you LOL

Good luck anyway xx
Phone the NHS support line, buy those plastic fags, put any fags you have now into the toilet.

But you wont bother, you are a weak minded induvidual.
You have to want to stop. I smoked for many many years and recently just decided that I didn-t want to smoke anymore and stopped, mainly because I could see myself as one of those people with a hole in their throat still puffing away... Will power is the main thing, I haven-t used any pills patches gum etc..I just stopped. It-s coming up to 6 months now and it-s just getting to the point where i can go through the day without thinking about a Marlboro light. When you first stop the cravings are full on, you have to remember they only last for about 5 mins during which time you should drink water or do something to take your mind off ..like reading or writing..join an online support group. I found that if you play mental games with your craving it helps..saying to yourself things like -Come on then, bring it on..I will knock you back everytime-. The most difficult time for a non smoker is when you have a drink...If you can drink with friends and not smoke you-ve cracked it...It is worth it, I don-t smell like an ashtray anymore and I feel really good about myself...All I have to do now is give up the smack. :)

Good luck !!
Champix is prescribed by the Gp and it is brilliant.

Willpower helps alot too.
I am now a month into not smoking!!!!! after thirty odd years . Go to yourGP or nurse and get the Patches, brilliant. I do not smoke fags any more and my partner has a smile on his face coz our sex life has improved , I huff and puff in all the right places now! Try to stick other things in your mouth,,,,,,carrot bits, celery etc
try www.gosmokefree.co.uk it gives you advice and a free go smoke free dvd to help you
Smoking will in fact cause you to suffer from erectile problems by the time you are in your late thirties.
My man could not stop either, so I made him a deal.
For every day that he is able to live through without a smoke, I would give him oral satisfaction, and let him blow his load instead of his smoke....
Well he cheated and smoked afterwards. That was the end of my efforts to help him stop.
He died, you know.....
Not here anymore, so if your woman can assist you, let her know
Try Champix tablets:they work

Personally, I use the mini cigarette model, not to be confused with the super mini. It looks just like a real cigarette so mentally, I was able to make the switch much easier. I also use the eliquid. With the eliquid, it allows you to put 2-3 drips into the cartridge and it gives you a load of vapor each time you smoke. It is also far more cost effective.

Be aware that some suppliers are saying there are 20 cigarettes in a cartridge. This is simply not true and you will be disappointed when you find out for yourself that it this estimate is false. You will get between 4-10 cigarettes per cartridge, and that number varies depending on the type of smoking habits you have AND if you are on the correct nicotine strength.

Another note, you need two atomizers. I rely on my ecig and smoke no tobacco at all. If something happens to my atomizer, then I am stuck without my ecig and would end up smoking tobacco.
Njoy is now the largest e-cig company in the US. I would definitely go with them just because they are spreading throughout the US. Costco, Wallgreens, Target, Pilot and a bunch of other chains are starting to sell them and at least you know you-re not with some tiny company that is going to be gone in 6 months. Plus the ease of getting parts and refills makes them the obvious pick to me. You can get them at http://www.njoycigarettes.com
I bought my electronic cigarette at
http://www.electronictobacco.com
because it was a decent price and appeared to be really the same thing as the njoy, just not branded, but there are also some helpful hints on other forums like
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/
which has allot of info if your looking to do reaserch on products.
not sure, but you can check it amazon.com and see if anyone made comments.

here-s the link
I use the Liberty ecig. I quit over 2 months ago the first day I got my flavors. I love mint, strawberry, cherry, and apple and no nicotine. The ecig is awesome and I hope that the fda doesnt ban them because of big tobacco.
I like the 901, or called the mini by some. Check electronic cigarette forum for more info
Nick, I tried the e cig but it worked out so expensive so i switched to http://youcanquit.notlong.com

How can I quit smoking? -

I need an effective method that really works.
I quit around Christmas and I sort of combined loads of different methods.
To help with the cravings I find something to chew on, like a straw or chewing gum which helps with the oral fixation part. If you need nicotine replacement then nicorette inhalators are really good (they are around £15) as they keep your hands busy as well as providing a nicotine fix. The gum never really did it for me (and I didn’t like the taste), but really worked for my friend and I haven’t tried the patches, but make sure you don’t get one that is too strong as too much nicotine will make you feel like sh*t. Also I’ve seen (but never tried) electric cigarettes on the internet, and ive wanted to get them, but they are like £50. They basically look and taste like real cigarettes (and contain nicotine) but they don’t get smoked.
It also helped to tell my flatmates that I was quitting, so if I mention really wanting one, they keep me busy and take my mind off it. Also if you have any cigarettes left over, give them to someone you live with or hide them away somewhere, so they aren-t easy to get one but if you feel like you really really need one, it takes you a while to find them, and by that time you might have changed your mind. Also it helps me to know that i have them around, as it stops me thinking about how soon i can go and buy some.
If you do have one (i lasted 3 weeks before slipping up) it-s not the end of the world, just write it off as a mistake, don-t think you-ve ruined it.
It sounds really cliche but keep yourself busy, i find when im in the middle of something i don-t really think about cigarettes. Also write down the date since you had one. I have it above my desk and it helps remind me that i-m doing a good job and how hard it would be to stay cigarette free for this long again if i give up and have one.
Go to your doctor, ask him about Champix.

Champix works primarily in two ways. Firstly, it reduces the smoker-s craving for nicotine by binding to nicotine receptors in the brain and reduces the symptoms of withdrawal. Secondly, it reduces the satisfaction a smoker receives when smoking a cigarette.

In trials, 44% of the group treated with Champix had stopped smoking after being treated for 12 weeks, as opposed to 11% of smokers taking the placebo. Over the same duration, it was also shown to be twice as effective as Zyban (bupropion), the other main anti-smoking drug treatment.

My boyfriend tried this and it really works.
I think thats fantastic that you-re going to quit smoking!!! Being a respiratory scientist, I come across a lot of patients who have quit smoking: here-s a couple of suggestions:

Generally smoking is in conjunction with a habit - like, getting up in the morning, making a coffee and having a cigarette. One patient has told me that she has eliminated as many habits as she can that she used to associate with smoking, and that stops her from being tempted. It won-t stop the craving completely but its a start.

There-s always the Nicobate products, but it would be good to speak to your doctor or pharmacist as far as which product would be better for you.

Rewarding yourself for lack of cigarettes you-ve had per day is also a good idea. I would probably advise you to not cut all the cigarettes in one go, just gradually wean youself off just so it gives your body a bit of time to get used to the idea of no nicotine. Keep yourself busy, take up some kind of project that you-ve wanted to do perhaps.

It-ll be hard, but, i assure you - there are far too many people that I have come across that have said that they wished they had quit smoking earlier. You-re doing a really good thing! Try your best!! You-ll feel so much better in the long run!!
Now that-s not something really easy..

Myself, I tried gums, patches, and all kind of stuff. But what really helped me and how I managed to quit was with hypnosis. It may sound strange but it really helped me.

I looked around the internet and found this website where a guy shares his story and how he managed to quit smoking through hypnosis and it-s a pretty useful method. You can check the website here:
http://www.thequitsmokingsecret.com
I did it with Chantix. Took it for 4 weeks and I have been smoke free for 18 months now. You need a prescription for it. Works very for the withdrawl symptoms. My husband quit as well so for us this has been a miracle drug. I think you can take it for up to 6 months if need be. If nothing else has worked, you should give it a try.
Don-t smoke in the first place
DUH!

Can over the counter quit smoking aids such as gum or patches be taken in conjunction with Chantix? -

Can over the counter quit smoking aids such as gum or patches be taken in conjunction with Chantix? -

Nicotine supplements like gum and patches are not helpful when taking Chantix, which attaches to the nicotine receptors in the brain. The medication essentially tricks the brain into thinking you already have the nicotine in your system, which decreases the craving for smoking. So nicotine supplements generally won-t make a difference in how you feel and could cause some nausea. Most of my patients that have taken Chantix are able to quit after about 1 week and most are successful in quitting completely if they take it for the recommended 6 months. Good luck.
No Chantix can not be taken with quit smoking aids. This combo with Nicotine may increase the risk of nausea and vomiting, dizziness.

This includes all nicotine gum, inhaled, lozenges, nasal and transdermal.
there is no need to take OTC meds for smoking when taking Chantix. call your doctor if you have concerns.

how long did the cravings last
Well done! Try Alan Carrs Easy Way To Stop Smoking book and CD. You have got to try it too - let me know! Amazing. My friend smoked 50 a day and worked in the restaurant trade in the time when people used to be able to smoke in public places. He and I both quit by reading that book and it never occurs to us to smoke even 10 years later.
Most people say that however long you-ve been smoking and however manage to quit, after 2 weeks its much easier and within a month you definately lose the urge to smoke. Give it several months and you-ll hate smokers lol!
Please try that book - it-s great. He even tells you to smoke while reading it!
congrats on those first 2 days...as far as cravings last.. i cant tell you becuase thats an individual thing.. i will state that they do go away.. i have been quit for a littl over 5 years using the nicotine anonymous program..

we have meetings in most large citys, and on the internet
i stopped smoking because i got pregnant and i was going to start back up after the baby, but with the taxes and everything i highly doubt that. it has been really hard on me especially since it seems like everyone around me smokes. i-ve been smoke free for 3-4 months now. the cravings last awhile i won-t lie...i still get cravings, but i think about it hurting my baby and i won-t take that chance.
A little off topic but,..I wonder how many people would quit if they were given free x-rays of their lungs.
I had a cat scan that caught a small spot of emphysema even though I was never much of a smoker.. and you can be sure that I never will be again.
I guess you know that they sell gum to help the transition.
Good luck.
been quit for 2 1/2 years . used chantex. used suckers to fill in for the need to have something in my mouth and hands. the cravings were gone in about a week.
As the old saying goes, it-s easy: I-ve done it a dozen times. Good luck!

I quit smoking and I am still having trouble taking deep breaths. Are there any exercies that can help? -

I have trouble taking deep satisfying breaths since I quit smoking and I think I need to cleanse my lungs, but I am not sure how.
You need to see your doc first to be sure there is no medical cause for your problems. Once the doc rules out any problem then try getting balloons and blowing them up to help increase your lung capacity. See your doc first though as you may have some permanent damage from smoking.
anything cardiovascular. it does take time to expand the lungs to a deeper breath. stair walking, biking are very easy. but also are good to get the air flowing

Does The Patch Really Work If You Want To Quit Smoking for Good? -

Does The Patch Really Work If You Want To Quit Smoking for Good? -

The patch is great. It takes all the stress out while you learn how not to hold a cigarette . Nicotine gum is great. BOTH require willpower. You will find that the psychology of smoking is the worst thing to break. Be determined.
The patch is designed to pump nicotine into your system to help ease nicotine withdrawal.

I have taught hundreds of people how to quit smoking, and I have found that the patch doesn-t work for most people.

The reason?

They rely too heavily on the patch. When the can-t quit

they say: the patch didn-t work for me.

The method that I have found that works the best is to taper down on how much you smoke. Smoke only when you absolutely need one. Within a week you should be down to 3 or 4 cigarettes a day.

At that point, you are only fighting the urge to smoke 3 or 4 times a day (rather than 20 or 40 if you smoke a pack or two a day) and when you do quit, the nicotine withdrawal isn-t as severe because you have already cut down.

Some people are able to look at the patch as a short-term crutch to help them quit -- that-s all it is--and for them the patch can work.

please help if you have any input other than just quit because I-ve tried and my nerves will not allow me to.
Thanks
First you have to have it in your heart and in your mind that you really want to quit. unless you make a lifestyle change you won-t make it. If you have it in those two places then you have made the first step. This is going to sound crazy but when I quit I decided that I was going to do it on my own and cheap and I wasn-t going to get fat doing it. What I did was I always kept a 1 liter bottle of water in my hand. Any time I felt the urge to smoke I drank water until the urge passed. Sometimes I thought I was going to drown, and I had to pee every 15 minutes for a while, BUT I think that the water helped flush the nicotine out of my system fster because I didn-t get the jitters or cranky and the like. It took about a week of drinking about a liter an hour and peeing about 40 times a day before I quit thinking about wanting to smoke. If your heart and mind are in the right place you will do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal. Good Luck and God Speed!
that sounds like it should work and she has a point

Might ask Dr for anti anxiety drug like ativan
I quite on Nov. 05,2006 this year.It has taken much work for me this time, it is now my 2nd time I have quit in my life time. I had a very good Dr. to work with me we started by finding that I had huge Anxity so we started there then moved to the Depression that I was so unaware that I had and treated it with Welburtin 2 x a day and then I had to call and tell here that we were still missing 8 hours of my day and once we moved me to 3 doses a day it became a little easier to achive. I have worked on this for 2 years now and have managed to quite for the last time. You must remeber that it will take practice to be a non-smoker just like when you became a smoker!
I forgot to tell you I live with a smoker who has not a clue what COPD really is!
But all in good time, he had to watch me take a breathing treatment today in ER. The Biggest secret there is, is you, how much can you learn about why you like to smoke??? Me oh that is easy now but at one time I had no clue at all. So for me it would be the weight control, anxity and depresion, that little pick me up I needed every few hours, pain releafe for me as I have deterating disk disease oh and by the way that was caused by smoking(Per my surgeon) as well as the tooth loss(Per the many dentist trips) I now have at 43. So you need to know why you smoke go buy you a special notebook that will be your Descover Yourself Notebook buy your favorite color or cartoon, I love Phoo!
You must learn to be patient with yourself it may not happen all at once be forgiving of any slips you may have because as long as you learn each time you try the next time it will get a little easier and a little longer between times you smoke and don-t forget to reward yourself for each little babby step you do. I buy things that I can wear and then share with the girls at work why I bought it and I still keep a calender of each day checked off as it goes by unsmoked (today is #47) and people at work will ask me what day I am on.
Let me know how it is going and if I can be of any help. You can email me on the weekends at coffeeplease@sbcglobal.net.
PRAY HARD!! That-s how I quit 17 years ago (never relapsed) after smoking for 19 years or so. I was smoking 3 packs a day. I tried filters, patches, gum, hypnosis and acupuncture -- none of which worked.

Be aware that you will go through withdrawal (first 72hrs). That is how long it takes your body to clean itself of nicotine. After that you will not be physically addicted, but you will still have the -habits- that go with smoking. -- Find something else to do with your hands when you are nervous. I used sunflower seeds.
This book worked for my friend:

The other answers are great, too. Remember, everybody stops smoking sooner or later. The people who love you will be so glad you chose -sooner.- (Four of my friends have died already, and another is in the hospital right now... )
Yes I do know how to quit once and for all. I smoked for about 25 years and was smoking 2-2.5 packs a day when I finally quit. While I was beginning to quit my mother became ill with Ovarian Cancer as well adding quite a bit of personal stress and grief to my life at the time, but after she died I was able to quit and here is the simple way I did it. Note it is not pain free however.

I began to stop smoking with a plan, First I set a date and prior to that date I began to limit how ofen I could smoke, setting longer intervals between each cig as a beginning. Then I trew out all my ashtrays and any smoking accessories lighters ect.. I also got a prescription for the patch and on my last night I tossed the last couple of smokes (some people actually smoke the extras, not a good idea). I put a patch on and went to bed. This was 5 days after my mother passed.

The next day I got up and yes I wanted one but resisted, I used the fact that the greatest gift I could give my mother dead or alive was to quit to help.

Ok so what was my secret... I suffered terribly as you will however this time I made sure to really feel my wihdrawl pain and it was bad. Everytime I wanted a smoke I asked myself do I really want to have to go though this pain ever again? My answer then and now is F%%% NO!! I knew if I started ever again I would need to quit again someday and in all honesty I do not like to suffer.

So I used that pain and suffering to not have -just 1 smoke- and continue to quit as otherwise I would prolong the pain. Today I have not smoked for about 9 1/2 years, once in a blue moon I feel the urge to have a smoke but just ask my self -do you ever really want to have to quit again?- Since I don-t it is just a minute or two and the desire passes. So it can be done, it is hard, it is painful, you will suffer. but by God it is worth it. And yes I know that I gave my mother the best damn gift I could ever give her as well.

Take the time to love yourself buy yourself a nice dinner with the money you saved. It is best to stay away from things closely related to smoking. Take a warm bath when your craving, ask for your friends support mostly if they do smoke. Oh and if you live with a smoker ask them to quit with you or to at least help you by smoking outside from now on. Don-t force them but ask them out of love to help.

Good luck, it can be done. But remember every painful moment and don-t let yourself forget, it just takes 1 cig to make you go through it all again.

Peace
Hire Me, I-ll follow you around with strict physical disciplinary action if you try to smoke plus verbal moral support to help your mental state.............DEAL or NO DEAL?
I-m not trying to put you off but here is a way to do it guaranteed. Pray, and ask at least 3 people who are really into prayer to pray for you. Ask God to give you strength to resist, ask God to help you and then totally, I mean totally rely on Him and you-ll be days ahead of the patch or gum. I-m truly not trying to be offensive, but this will work. The Bible says, -Cast ALL your cares on Him for He cares for you.-
Nobody has a 100% effective way to stop smoking, it-s not an easy thing to do, however, there are many different products on the market to help people, each of which with a different rate of success in general, and for each person.
There are patches and gums and inhalers, there are pills and devices to help you time your cigarettes and gradually wean yourself. There are support groups - you name it and it-s probably out there.
If you-re trying to quit and having a lot of trouble, talk to your doctor, he can help you find a way that may help you.
Theres a prescription drug called Zyban which works extremely well. Myself, and 4 friends have successfully quit smoking after years of doing it.
The only side effect we noticed was a few bad dreams, but they-re definitly worth quitting for

I gave up cigarettes on 1/1/08. Now my lungs feel awful. Could just be a cold I guess but I am curious if that is what occurs when you quit. I only smoked a pack or two a week, but that was for twelve years.
it-s normal. your body isn-t used to not having all the smoke - nicotine. it-s like your body having a nicotine fit.

I quit smoking about 2 months ago and some of the nausea and achy lung problems were almost enough to get me to reconsider. When you quit your lungs start a healing process to clear out all the crap you-ve deposited there. It does tend to make us ache. The nausea comes from a severe change in metabolism while headaches may come from stress or straight up withdrawl. However, given the duration of time since you quit (over a month) you probably have a cold. My first cold after quitting felt so awful. The achiness in my lungs was the same as when I used to smoke too much in a given day. It made me really want to start smoking again. Don-t know if that-s what you-re going through but give it a couple of weeks. If you don-t start feeling at least a little better, go and see a doctor if you can.
u should get help now (u may die) GET HELP UNDERSTAND
Your body has to readjust. Whenever we detox from anything...we can get -flu like- symptoms.

Good job....keep it up!
I quit after 8 years and i got a little sick also stress , mood swings , chest pains but its worth it . I fell better now alto better , even gained a little weight . Exercise helps the symptoms go away , don-t give up you already passed the hardest part to stop smoking all you got to do now is stick to it... Don-t let pressure break you trust me you-ll fell alto better....
I would imagine symptoms differ person to person. I-ve never heard of anyone getting sick unless they were on the patch and smoked lots either right before putting it on or right after.

Quitting cigaretts is the easiest thing to do... I-ve done it 3-4 times! (that was a joke) LOL Anyway, I noticed a short time after quitting I had a lot of flem to get rid of, constantly clearing my throat and spitting. (gross I know)

First it-s a physical addiction to get past.. then the emotional. It-s a tough road but if it-s what you really want... I mean REALLY want ...then you can do it.
This is part of the withdrawal process from the nicotine. Stick with it.
I think that is normal and your lungs are cleaning themselves out..Good Luck
My friend-s grandmother got really sick after she quit smoking had to start smoking again because of it actually.
Keep going, you-re almost home.
Yeah it-s part of it. Your lungs are trying to get rid of all the crap in there. I-ve known people that developed asthma after quitting too.

My friend took chantix,on the 8th day she quit smoking, then she stopped for a few months? -

and then she started casual smoking a hit here and there, then one a day, then 3 a day,now when she wakes up she has to have a cigarette, she has learned her lesson and wants to quit again will chantix work second time you take it we heard it may not
Yes, if it worked once it will work again. Chantix works by releasing a chemical in the brain that simulates what the nicotine does. Therefore, the nicotine does not give you the little -high- when you smoke. Good for her for quitting for any length. She can do it again!!!

I quit smoking pot a few months ago? -

I quit smoking pot a few months ago? -

I quit smoking pot a few months ago and when I stopped I sometimes have random moments that last ten seconds where I feel like I am really stoned. It seems like too much of a coincidence to think that they are not related. I-m thinking that maybe the THC stays in the body much longer than three weeks and maybe it is released sometimes. I have no idea. Anyone have any relation to this or know what is happening? Maybe they aren-t related at all.
This will probably happen for a while. There is residual THC in your body and it-s a toxin that can release on occasion. this doesn-t happen to everyone, but studies have shown that those that this happens to tend to have lower body weight. Don-t know why. You also don-t say how old you are but I-ll guess you-re 20 or older. If you-re younger than that, toxins affect your body far worse than if you-re older because you-re still developing. I started smoking at 18, quit at 19 and it happened to me for months. Stupidly, I started smoking again when I turned 21 and quit again a year later and it-s been a lot worse, this time they are short unpleasant episodes of feeling high, followed by random bouts of depression. Take it from me, be glad you quit, eat healthy for a while, let it get out of your system completely, and don-t go back to it.
it-s normal, it-s just the thc filtering out, and it will last as long as there is thc in your system

happened to me when i quit, now it doesn-t cuz it-s months later now

-Lily Ann- or whatever your name is, it-s impossible to be physically addicted to pot. so no, that-s not what it is, they weren-t asking for your uneducated opinion either.
The stoned feelings are caused by the toxins still in your body. They will fade with time. You probably have a slight addiction to pot as well. Try to take your mind off the Pot by goingto your local Gym and working out for a while.

Also if you drink plenty of water, this will help flush your system and de-toxify you.
You are probably addicted and want to feel high again.
Also, you aren-t used to being without the drug so your body feels different.

I too have tried many things and am about to try Chantix. Might look into it
Hi,
I have prescribed Chantix to many of my patients and so far am impressed with the results. You start with a tapering dose up to 1 mg twice a day. The first few weeks on it, you continue smoking until you no longer have the urge. Apparently the drug replaces nicotine within the brain. The stadard course of treatment is 4 months.

Having said that, it has been my experience that most people fail on the patch due to underdosing. A nicotine patch that is 21mg per day is the equivalent of one pack per day of cigs. If you smoke more than that you would need perhaps 1-1/2 or two patches per day.

Talk to your health care provider. Some insurances are starting to pay for Chantix.

Good luck,

I quit a little over a year ago-- COLD TURKEY.... the trick is you HAVE to trick your brain into thinking you ARE smoking by substituting the actions you took WHILE smoking with something else.... and without gaining weight in the process.. here-s what I did and it worked 100% for me.... I LOVE navel oranges... those big seedless ones with the thick skins.. So I bought TONS of them and whenever I craved a cigarette I grabbed an orange. The process of peeling it by hand, pulling apart the sections and then eating it section by section COPIED the actions I did with my hands AND mouth while smoking...my BRAIN was satisfied... Sometimes it would take 2 oranges...other times just 1. I would cut up a view oranges and put them in plastic baggies before going out in the car and grabbing pieces out of that baggie satisfied my desire to smoke IN THE CAR... I live ALL ALONE so the desire to smoke has ALWAYS been very strong with me and I was an almost 2 PACK A DAY smoker for 35 YEARS....within a WEEK and a half, I could cut down on the consumption of the oranges and did NOT miss the cigarettes....it-s been an entire YEAR now and I don-t miss them at all...... and haven-t gained even ONE POUND since I quit....

Do you have any quit smoking tips? -

I am embarking on the quit smoking challenge and I would love some ideas and tips from people out there who have kicked the habit...
Are you using an aides to quit? I used the patch which helped me greatly.
Keep cut up fruit and vegtables in mini ziplock baggies to snack on because your appetite will increase. Take a water bottle with you where ever you go and when you have a craving, take sips of it. It helps with hand to mouth, helps you with detoxing and will help you through the craving.
Remember that cravings only last 2 minutes tops... you CAN get through that and they lessen with time.
I also used this site when I quit and it was a huge help! I logged in daily, and during my worst moments to prevent me from going off track. It has forums, advice, tips, support 24/7 (all free) and everyone is in the same boat. Take the time to check it out... you-ll find it really helps.

Hey there. Congrats on deciding to quit. Absolutely the number one best long term health decision you can make. I started a yahoo group when I quit with extensive files, links etc. attached that can answer ANY question you might have regarding smoking and quitting. Accurately. Feel free to have a look and hang in there.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Sta…

You can get the new medication -Chantix- from your Dr. It works by telling the brain-s nicotine receptors that they are already full and there is no nicotine in the medication. Most insurance companies do cover this medication also. It really does work miracles! I also went and bought a humongous bag of those little -Dum-Dum- suckers to have someting for the hand to mouth habit too. They are small enough to not pack on the weight for you and they do the trick for that end of things. I also started walking after dinner instead of smoking. Good luck to you and great move!
there can be only 1 main thing to take care of in terms of quitting the habbit of smoking. STRONG WILL POWER TO QUIT.
if you have that then all else will be taken care of and no other tip is required. But if your will power to quit is not strong enough, then what ever tip anyone might give you is not going to work. If you think that you will reduce slowly and then one day quit this habbit - YOU ARE WRONG.
just stop smoking once and for all and ensure you dont get back to it come what may.
all the best !!!!
Decide for sure that you want to quit. Promise yourself that you-ll do it. It-s OK to have mixed feelings. Don-t let that stop you. There will be times every day that you don-t feel like quitting. You will have to stick with it anyway.

The following is a list of widely accepted tricks to help you get through the process of quitting.

Quit smoking tip #1:
Rid your entire life of cigarettes and all the paraphernalia of smoking such as lighters, matches, ashtrays etc. Never carry cigarettes with you.

Quit smoking tip #2:
Accept that you are never going to have another cigarette as long as you live. Understand that the only reason you could possibly need any smoking paraphernalia is because you plan on smoking again.

Quit smoking tip #3:
Don-t kid yourself that you will let your friends smoke in your house. You must ban smoking from every aspect of your life. Your house, your car, your back yard.

Quit smoking tip #4:
Never doubt your decision to quit smoking. It was the right decision.

Quit smoking tip #5:
Every time you crave a cigarette, feel proud that you have gone this long without one and you can manage even longer.

Quit smoking tip #6:
Drink plenty of water and drink plenty of citric fruit juices for the first couple of days. Stop drinking sugary drinks after day 3 or you will put on weight.

Quit smoking tip #7:
If you are worried about getting fat, start using the stairs at work or whenever you can. If you have to go somewhere within a mile, walk instead of cycle or taking the car.

Quit smoking tip #8:
Start eating healthy food. Stay off the pastries, sweets, potato chips and chocolates. Eat raw vegetables and plenty of fruit. Without smoking, these things start tasting even better than normal.

Quit smoking tip #9:
Set aside a jar to put all your cigarette money in. You will be saving over $30 a week if you are a normal smoker. Use this money to spend on something extravagant for your self after the first week and then after the first month.

Quit smoking tip #10:
Tell everyone you know that you are quitting smoking. Ask them for their encouragement - they will give it. Smokers and non-smokers and ex-smokers especially, will all be 100% behind you. No-one likes seeing friends or family killing themselves.

There are many support methods out there to help smokers quit. You can use nicotine replacement therapy (which I seriously don-t recommend), zyban or chantix with 16% and 22% apparent success rates. There are also other methods that do not use drugs or pharmacological interventions such as hypnotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy. These methods generally boast better long term results than drugs do.

My advice to anyone trying to quit smoking is to be prepared to try any and every method you can. Invest money (particularly if it comes with a money back guarantee) because it is money well spent. No-one can tell you which method will work best for you so you can only find out by trying all the methods.

As always, never stop trying to quit smoking.
Drink tomato juice in the morning after you get up, and drink carrot juice before you sleep at night....try it ;)
Perhaps a web search for -quit smoking- + -natural ways- might be useful.

Has anyone every been hypnotized to quit smoking? Did it work and how did you feel? -

I ran into a fellow on my job the other day who actually had a card the identified him as part of a hypnosis society!!! He claimed that he used hypnosis to rid himself of cigarettes...and he claims it worked. If there is any validity to this I would like information myself on when and where to go to get hypnotized to rid myself of cigarettes..spock78765@yahoo.com
i tried once by the hypnotist continously farted. I never smoked from that day.
see the problem with hypnosis is it only works when the subject is hypnotized, he snaps his fingers and then man I need ta smoke a butt.
I did a couple of years ago.
Didn-t work.
Bummer.

it definately works the mind controls every part of you
if you convince your mind not to smoke you will not smoke

Im trying to quit smoking. i also have a cutting problem. when i try to quit smoking i get more of an urge to? -

cut. and when i try to quit cutting, i smoke a lot more. i need to quit my bad habits. i get very sick all the time from smoking the way i do and i hate having to constantly wear something that goes over my arms so no one around me thinks im crazy. its just the way i cope with these things.

can someone give me suggestions to possibly quit BOTH of these things without getting a -professional- involved??
There is no sure-fire answer that will work for all people, but I-d be happy to tell you what worked for me. It-s a plan that will take awhile to get through, but it-s probably the most pain-free way of doing things.

1 - Set a date that you would like to START the process of quitting smoking. Make that date at least 2 weeks from the day you decide the date. While doing this, if you are not on a schedule with your smoking, get on one. Get your body used to having a certain amount of cigs at the same time, everyday.

2 - When your body is adjusted to this schedule, rearrange your smoking schedule in a way where you drop 1 cigarette from your schedule. Stick to this schedule until your body is used to this schedule.

3 - Repeat step 2 as needed. This may take awhile, but that-s okay. Each cigarette you drop is one step closer to being smoke-free.

4 - When you are down to 1 cigarette per day, drop that cig. By now, your body has been conditioned to live with a very small amount of nicotine, so dropping that last cigarette won-t be as hard as it sounds.

5 - You will probably crave a cigarette after a particularly trying day. Whatever you do, don-t give in. You have to have will power for ANY plan to work, so make sure you bring your will power to the party.

The above plan may take awhile to work, but it-ll condition your body to live with less and less nicotine, so withdrawl and stress will be minimized.

As for cutting, the best thing is to keep yourself busy. Better yet, busy in a public place. Occupy yourself with something you enjoy doing. Don-t give yourself the chance to cut. Will power will come in handy here, as well. Feel the urge? Beat it. Win out over it!

Hope this gives you a good start. Don-t rush the quitting. Just take baby steps. Small steps will get you to victory faster than rushing it.

Best of luck.
well uuhh i used to cut myself..
but i dont anymore.. and i guess i just stopped and created different better habits like writing poems... songs... talking to a friendd or somethingg and just take your ciggeretes awayy and don-t think of them try doing something active like running track soccer baseball stuff like that that will keep you busy..
hope this helps
Make yourself pay 20 dollars to charity every time you pick up a cigarette. That way, you will realize that you are becoming poorer and stop, and its good for charity!
get some mental help hunny
Well, starting with quitting smoking, the best things you can do for that are getting some sort of nicotine patches or gum to decrease your cravings and help with withdrawal symptoms. Since getting your body off any kind of drug is both stressful and depressing (especially if you-re addicted to it), that should help out with the need to cut a little bit.

Also, try to keep your hands busy so that you-re not tempted to reach for a cigarette or sharp object. Part of why it-s so hard to quit smoking is because when you smoke, you-re constantly doing things with your hand. Try knitting or something small and intricate that will keep your hands moving and give you something else to concentrate on.

The last thing I would do is find something to chew on. Gum can be good, but it gets expensive. For a good crunch (and itty bitty health boost) go for in-shell salted sunflower seeds. Many people I know who have successfully quit swear by them.

You said yourself that cutting is the way you cope. So what do you need to do? Keep yourself from getting stressed out. Wean yourself off the nicotine instead of trying to go cold-turkey -- it-s just going to trigger a cutting session if you do it all at once, as you have seen yourself.
