What is a good way to quit smoking? -

ive been smoking cigarettes for 3 years now. i smoke about a pack a day or more. ive tried quitting before but went absolutely nuts. i was depressed and tired. but mostly ornery.
im only 17 so i figure now would be a good time to quit.
im just not sure what way is best.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
I quit smoking 2 years ago by will power and nothing else i didnt use any patches or gum i said to myself one morning im gonna give up i admit it isnt easy i smoked for 10 yrs and i havent touched a cigarette in 2 yrs
Chew nicorette gum and start drinking, the most surefire way to stop a habit is to replace it with another one..then hopefully you can lay off the alcohol easier than you could stop the cigs
Don-t START
go to your doctor and ask him about a new pill they have come out with called.. chantix.
IT WORKS.. it allows you to smoke for about 7 days until you get the medicine in your system.
this allows you to cut down on your own.
after that 7th day.. you will not smoke again.. if you try you will get sick. you will throw up after one good inhale..
Try the nicotine patch. If you have health insurance your coverage may pay for them. My father smoked for 40 years and tried several times to quit without success until he tried the patch. One of the biggest obstacles in quitting is being ready. It sounds like you are. Do it! You-ll be so happy!
My dad smoked 4 packs a day for probably 25 years and one day decided he didn-t want to smoke any more so he quit just like that.

It-s all in your head girly.

And it-s social. I know because I just quit. Have a friend quit with you. Or when someone lights on up, put a piece of gum in your mouth to occupy you.
There-s no best way . Use your will power and determination . Ask yourself who-s stronger , you or a stinking weed . There are many negatives to smoking , no positives .
ok stop buying cigs please
it makes your skin bad compared to others
ur breath is gona start to smell
and give u cancer
does that help u to stop smoking....
i bet ur saying no i want a better answer right?
well try everyday to reduce cigs so tomorrow have 4 instead of like 10 and then everyday have less and then u will end up having noone
or u can buy those special gums that u chew
they work :P
or those paches

good luck
:):):):)):

its never too late to stop smoking
I smoked for over fifty years. (camel regulars). I stopped because I had a better use for the money. If they put the price back into perspective I would continue to smoke. I do not feel better because I quit. I smoked three packs a day. I do not like the fact that I had to quit because of the cost. The doctors and the government need to get out of peoples business. They have been blaming things (cancer) on cigarettes and other things. But if you don-t know something for a fact then keep it to yourself. I am 72 years old and in good health. If what they said of cigarettes I should be dead. My father smoked and my grandfather smoked and probably all of my for fathers before them. The doctors don-t know what causes cancer so they can blame it on what ever they want. In my life time they have found that cancer was caused by every thing from breathing and eating to getting the wrong kind of exercise. If they don-t know what it is they call it cancer.
The way I quit was easy. I just told myself that I didn-t want to feed the politicians anymore of my money. The last huge raise in the price of cigarettes was for education.Ha! Ha! The thing that was most important was to keep a pack of cigarettes in my pocket at all times. You can-t quit if you don-t have the opportunity to tell yourself no! Good luck!

Im trying to quit smoking...PLEASE HELP!!? -

I have been smoking for about 3 years now, and I finally decided to quit! a couple days ago, I went to the gym and ran for about 10 minutes. My lungs are in so much pain. If I took a deep breath, i would start coughing. Is it a good idea if I kept running or do I need to wait until the pain goes away and then start running again? If you were me, what would you do?
i smoked for 11 years. i quit last year. i was successful. i researched and found that it would take me at least a year to clear my lungs of build-up but would never heal completely. i think it should take you six months but you will heal completely. quit now!

as for running, i was an infantryman in the army in my smoking years. running was my weak point. i did make the top time standards but it was torture to maintain 6 minute/mile pace for 2 miles. i felt like dying each time.

i mentioned this because 5 milers were no picnic, but way easier, because of the pace. i would rather run 10 miles at a 9 minute/mile pace than run 2 miles at a 6 minute/mile pace.

it may be your pace that hurts you. slow down. i also researched that running for more than an hour is not healthy for you. it is best to cap your running for an hour max or less. a good distance for an hour is 7 miles.

it may be your diaphragm that hurts. it may be that the muscles that control your breathing are fatigued from breathing too hard. try to control your breath by taking shallow, slow breaths. try to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. get a rhythm going. once you-re starting to tire, keep your mouth open and breathe through it.

and yes, you should run while quitting smoking. it will help you heal. just research running. you will get used to it.

i-m 9 years older now, but smoke free. i test myself on running and lately ran 3 miles in under 17 minutes, and ironically, wasnt in pain. it was the cigarettes that held me back.

i would quit smoking, research running, implement what i learn, and never look back if i were you. best of luck.

good luck.

p.s. go to a doctor an see if he/she ok-s running.
I had this problem a long time ago. What you should do is to quit smoking, as you probably have asthma, which was my case. But whether you do or don-t have asthma, you should quit smoking anyway, and if you do have asthma; well, lets just say you-ll be in a heap of trouble if you continue smoking. It costs a lot to be diagnosed with asthma in the US, and I had to diagnose myself, as the doctors wanted tests after tests (money). In my case, I simply told a doctor I had asthma and he agreed and gave me medication. To self-test yourself for asthma, I would suggest you drink 1-oz of vodka (nothing else will do) when you are having pain or shortness of breath, and if you feel almost immediate and significant relief, you have asthma.
Ok alchohol is not good for this kind of thing its totally to the bad side

and no its not a good idea for them to keep running, and im sure i don-t need to explain why. you don-t have to run or get out of breath you just have to develop the habit of exercise. so you can start walking, or slow jogging or half and half until you are better in a few days or weeks. it won-t take long but use the pain as your barrier, you shouldn-t feel pain at all in the lungs and if you do its too hard. you might only handle 5 mins walking but thats okay. hit the weights while your waiting for your body to recover from years of smoking and do some big stretching routines. its won-t take long

I quit smoking 8 weeks ago! Now I have noticed a metallic taste in my mouth.? -

Its to where I can hardly stand it.
Take out your retainer !
you are probaly getting a sense of taste back, when you smoke the heat on your tongue deadens your sense of taste, plus the nasty taste it left, once you have allowed your pallate to cleanse, you retain that sense of taste, brush your teeth.
Drink a lot of water to clean out your system.

I quit smoking over ten years ago and I don-t recall a metallic taste. I remember smelling and tasting things a lot better and I could breath deeply without coughing. It-s great to be smoke free.
It is a common symptom. Don-t worry. Just like all the other quit symptoms, it will pass with time.

Bless your heart and congratulations on your success.

How can I quit smoking? -

I have tried the patch. I have tried cold turkey. I have tried cutting back slowly, I have tried the gum. I have tried wellbutrin.
well everytime you go to get a smoke i can hit you in the face with a shovel or you can attatch the cig to a live wire
Replace smoking with something else such as something healthy and I know it will be hard but if you really want to do it you-re going to have to make a sacrifice. If that doesn-t work, contact your doctor and ask him if he can do something about it.

use the patches, gum too. I am trying to stop too. I did actually for three months and then started again. SO I understand difficult. Try patches and see if that helps. Good luck.
Pfizer has a product called Nicotrol, which is basically a pipe with a nicotine capsule in it. You don-t light it, but you do inhale the nicotine when you need to. An elderly neighbor of mine, who smoked for 50 years has recently quit with this, and he swore he-d never quit smoking. So, go to a doctor, and ask them about it to give it a try. It can-t hurt, can it?
buy a pack of smokes. smoke one of them and crush the rest.
then wait until you would have smoked up the entire pack have you not crushed them up and do it again.

after a while you will stop smoking hopefully.

e-mail me if you have any questions.
I have tried them all too with no luck. I haven-t tried hypnosis yet, but I-ve heard it works.
Do the patch again, 21mg but in order for you to quit you have to want to and you need to commit to it...when I did the patch I only used it for 3 weeks. I have tried everything to. Try the patch again, for me it took the craving away, but you need to break the habit. If you drink coffee stop, after you eat go for a walk, do a crossword, do something to take your mind off of it...its hard but think of your health.
Tried the herbal stuff(with tincture pills and detoxifying pills)..guess what IT WORKS!!!! 30 yr smoker here...QUIT the first day and it-s been over 2yrs smoke free...Try it
LASER TREATMENT!! It truly does take away any - all wphysical withdrawal symptoms. ...But the habit part is up to you.
Take your cigarette pack and throw it away.

Contact a specialist. It may help. Or try to distract yourself thinking about other things. Have fun, don-t get nervous or stressed. Just stay relaxed if you can.

Good luck!
try hypnosis it works
A friend just quit with the patch. She had one cigarrette in the morning before putting on the patch and didn-t smoke again for the rest of the day. After a month of bragging I told her that she really hadn-t quit till she gave up the one a day habit. She took my advice and is now smoke free. It was easier that she expected to give it up.
What started the whole thing was she had to choose between a carton of smokes or medication for her sick dog. She smoked a carton a week so her cigarette payment was her second biggest monthly expense after the house payment. She can do a lot more now without breathing heavy.
Your mind is more powerful than you think. You have to be determined to quit. You don-t -try- to quit. You just quit.
go on holiday for 2 weeks with a friend who does not smoke and they are not to allow you to smoke

change of enviroment does it easy, do not frequent places where others smoke while away either
quitting smoking is very very very very hard.

thus you must have a strong determination, so strong that u will not fall for even the most unhappy/mind boggling news.

On that note i will say try to involve your leisure time with something like listening to music, do something which makes u more happier than smoking.
do something which will relieve your stress.

people smoke because they feel stressed. And I tell u if u do something to relieve yourself it would be of help defintely.
so up to now you probably know that nothing really works... I just have to let you know... You can quit simply by quiting. Every time you want to smoke you will have to pass. Do not think about where you ll be in one month simply think of saying no to the next cigarette. Good luck.. Let me know how it goes.
cut ur hands off
I just had a friend quit smoking with the help of hypnosis. He is much happier, and is substituting walking, bicycling, etc.
Limit your cigs, and slowly start to take them away, and never say that you are quitting only that you are cutting down. That is how I did it, and now I only have a cig. when I feel like it, which is about 1 or 2 a year.
I went to a hypnotist in 1986 and I am very happy to say I am still a non smoker. It is never an easy thing to do but it will be one of the best things you have ever done for yourself and your family. Good luck in your venture and don-t give up. You can-t cut back slowly, it just teases you. Give it another try!
I am trying too. I set a date and now am only allowing myself to smoke 1 every two hours. then every 3 hours. I have to watch the clock and fight with myself but I am going to kick this. I have to.

Just be determined and dont allow the addicition to win. Promise your self a treat if you can make it a day without one.

It is such a hard thing to do. I hope I kick it this time.
I have been down the same road as you, yes it is very hard to do, it is in the mind, i had tried everything on the market, it had cost me a pretty penny, i was spending as much on stop smoking products, as i was on smoking, finally, a couple of years back now, i started to train my mind to hate smoking, every time i wanted a smoke i would take it in that i hated it, it took 3 weeks, but i did it, i wouldn-t have minded if it took longer, all i ever thought about was, I HATE SMOKING, as Ive said it worked for me, now i cant stand anybody who smokes around me, and i cant wait for next year, when it becomes illegal to in public places, so i can go places where there isn-t the STENCH of smoke.
Good luck to you in your quest, whichever way you give up.
Try mint
Sorry But I Dunno.
hypnosis is the best answer for your smoking illness
just don-t smoke
Your addiction to smoking is the result of a mineral defficiency, as is alcoholism, obesity, etc. Colloidal minerals can be taken along with multivitamins and antioxidants. You can buy these at wholesale price from www.neways.com.au (please feel free to email me for more product info and advice). Choose LIFE. (Remove the root, not the weed. I.e. Solve the cause not the effect.)
I knew a guy who threaded a hoarse hair in each cigarette so naturally each one tasted ghastly, it was not long until he could no longer smoke.
try doing this...if u r a chain smoker, try reducing the no. of cigars u smoke per day.and kepp a strict control on ur mind...it might take a few months but still u can stop till then.
get pregnant
you should just decide from your heart and from your mine.
you should just decide realy to dont spoke from now!
from this minute...
I read Allen Carr-s -Easy Way To Stop Smoking-. It realy works, I know lots of ex-smokers who swear by it. I have not had a smoke now for almost five month. THE BOOK WORKS !!!
first b sure 2 quit it then hope u can do it then u can

How did you quit smoking? -

i have been smoking cigarettes since i was 12 and a half.. im nearly 18 and rely in them to much. and i don-t want to be smoking or worrying about smoking when i experience the real world and have a job and actually have to buy the smokes myself with my own cash. it smells. my lungs ain-t the best. i don-t want to harm my body any longer. i want to quit for me and my non-smoker b/f.
I recommend cutting down gradually until your quit date. I did this. I cut down to half a pack. I did this for three months. I smoked by the puff, not by the cigarette. I took only the amount of nicotine that was necessary to satisfy my urge to smoke and put the rest of the cigarette out.

After doing this for three months I quit cold turkey.

Now I-m eating more candy to distract me but its been 4 months. I have urges but they don-t last more than a second or two. If they-re lasting more than that then you-re concentrating on the cigarette. Don-t do it. Concentrate on something else.
Throw away all the cigars you have right now and don-t buy anymore and don-t bum it off anyone.

Sorry. Ok, it-s based off of my experience. I said it because a smoker who can-t quit smoking says -I-ll quit smoking after finishing the cigars I have- and continues buying next box.
A smoker who can quit smoking quits smoking immediately at the moment he/she decides to quit.

I quited smoking in the way I said first, though it might need the firm resolution to quit.
I think the most good and quick way to quit smoking is to make up your mind firmly and throw away all the cigars you have so far and never buy or smoke again.

First, withstand it for one month, and then you won-t have wanted to start smorking again to waste the one month you withstood.
I started smoking when I was 13. I smoked for 18 years until finally... I quit! I wasn-t addicted at first, and in fact with me it took several years before I was fully addicted. I felt as if I was addicted long before I actually was. I would say by the age of 20 I realized I was hooked.
With the cost of cigarettes continuing the go up I knew I had to make the decision to quit. So I did some research on what was the best and most effective way. According to many statistics I read it said Cold Turkey was the best way to quit and stay quit. I smoked every cigarette I had, went to bed, and started out the next day without any cigarettes. It was one of the hardest things I have done. I did not think I was going to get through it but each craving I fought off I found strength knowing that was one more craving down. I felt as if I was a drug addict, and essentially I was! I have not had a cigarette in 4 months! I still get cravings once in a while, but they are getting smaller, and farther apart!
The one thing my Dr. and ex smokers had told me was... If you want to quit you can, but if your not committed you will fail! Good luck! Remember the quicker you quit smoking the easier it will be!
Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
I think it would be best if you have clinical interventions by your health care providers. This coupled with behavioral and counseling therapies can greatly increase your chances of overcoming smoking. Those programs that usually have one-on-one counseling and therapy work best according to statistics.

Chantix is the most effective stop smoking med, with a success rate of 40%. I know that doesn-t sound high, but it-s at least twice that of other methods -- it takes the average smoker five attempts to quit.

Is there anything that can be taken to help someone quit smoking? -

The only way a person will quit smoking is if they truely want to quit. I smoked for years and years, then one day hated it. I quit cold turkey and havent had one since. It was hard, but I was dedicated and had the desire to stop.
Wellbutrin.
keep alot of sucker near by
Try chewing on herbal sticks. Some shops have them. Try chewing gum.

Find things to keep your mind occupied. Keep educating yourself in such a way that you learn all about the ill effects of smoking for yourself and others.

There are some fake smoke herbs out, but you would still be playing with fire.
they have gum and patches u can get at drugstores, and as far as i know there is a shot that you can get that is supposed to help i-ve heard a lot of success stories about it also try this site

http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvL…

chantix and zyban, these 2 are prescription and are besides some prescription and nonprescription nicotene replacement preparations, good luck
Any other form of nicotine will work well, since that is what you are addicted to. Patches, gum, etc. will completely eliminate the body-s cravings (but not your mind-s bad habits).
First - do you suffer from depression? Wellbutrin helps people to not want it.
Nicotine is a very powerful addiction, sometimes as poweful as heroin or cocaine. It is very hard to quit. It can take people several times of trying to quit before there is a succesful outcome. Each time you quit you learn what helps and hurts. A great deal of effort and hard work will be needed from yourself in order to become succesful. Here are 5 keys to help you quit:
1 - Get ready - set a quit date
change your environment
get rid of all ash trays and both cigarette and the cigarette butts around the house, cars, work.
don-t let people smoke around you.
once you set the date no smoking, not even a puff

2 - Get support - studies show that you have a greater chance of recovery if you have support. Family, friends, co-workers, etc.

3 - Learn new skills and behavior - keep yourself distracted so you won-t want to smoke. It helps if you change your daily routine: eat in a different place as you would normally do, switch choice of beverages you drink, no alcohol!

4 - Get medication and use it as directed - F.D.A approved medications
bupropion SR - PRESCRIPTION
nicotine gum - OVER THE COUNTER
nicotine inhailer - PRESCRIPTION
nicotine nasal spray - PRESCRIPTION
nicotine patch - BOTH

5 - Be prepared for a relapse or difficult situations - Relapses if it happens, it is usually within the first 3 months
avoid alcohol
avoid being around other smokers
prepare for weight gain - even though some of those medications delete that side effect.
bad moods and depression can occur

YOU WILL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER IF YOU CHOOSE TO QUIT ONCE YOU ARE PAST THE CRITICAL STAGE (FIRST 3 MONTHS)

Best ways to quit smoking? -

What work best for you?

I have been changing my life around. I have stopped using drugs and drinking, got my GED and a job.

Now I want to quit smoking. I know cold turkey doesn-t work for me. I have manage to cut back to 1 pack a day.

Any advice?
First, good for you for taking the initiative to get yourself straightened out.

For quitting smoking, you can cut back gradually (when I quit, I stopped smoking in the morning and only smoked after lunch hour), and when you have a craving you can have a piece of gum (buy a large tub of gum and keep it with you at all times or on your desk), or drink a tall glass of water. I found that these distractions helped a lot.

Also keep yourself busy! I find that when I am bored (at work), I smoked a lot more because I had nothing better to do with my time!

If you find yourself running low on smokes, don-t buy a pack straight away - only buy a pack when you absolutely need a smoke and it-s your designated -smoking time-... most importantly.... stay away from other smokers!

Hope this helps.
Best,
KC
My son quit smoking last month, slowly he quit and his girlfriend encouraged him. He tried several times before with no luck. He is 21. He has also cut back on drinking beer and is looking for a church to attend with his girlfriend.

Glad you are making this effort to be more healthy. Smoking is expensive and unhealthy...don-t hang with people who smoke that would help a little. Drink lots of water and get a hobby to do with your hands. Keep busy and treat yourself to something nice. Ask God to help you and it will make a big difference.

Take some B-12 each day...it helps with everything.
Use a product like Cigarrest that can help you quit smoking.

No matter what you use though, you have to be mentally prepared for it. Tell everyone you know so you can-t track back, avoid -red flag- situations and so on.
First hang out with friends that don-t smoke. That way you can-t bum cigarettes when you run out or left your lighter in your other pants. Second ride a scooter or motorcycle for transportation. Finally figure out how much money you can save by not smoking!
Cold Turkey.
