My mom suffers from Dementia and daily forgets that she quit smoking.? -

Due to emphysema, the doctor ordered my 86 yr old mom to quit smoking last July. Her health has thankfully improved since then. She, however forgets every day that she quit so she goes through the house looking for cigarettes and then accuses me of hiding them from her. Then she breaks down and cries and goes to bed. Then she gets up and the cycle returns. Any tips on what I can say to her to get her to settle down? Thanks
Offer reminders that she quit smoking. DO NOT argue with her. Attempt to redirect or distract her. Unfortunatly with dementia short term memory is the first to go and this is not a problem that can be fixed. I would simply remind her she has quit smoking. If she gets upset she will be ok and she will forget that you would not let her smoke.
If you are her primary caregiver, try having other members of the family state the same to her.
Offer praises on how proud you are of her for not smoking.
You could also substitute a snack or candy- for smoking.

If you need help with care try adult centers with day programs or some of the home care agencies
oh dear...thats sad. but please, at 86 years old and unwell...dont make her remaining years miserable by denying the thing she likes the best. couldnt you just let her have 2 or 3 cigarettes a day? - i know its not good for her..but if that will make her happy...wouldnt that be best? i sympathise with you though...dementia is a horrible thing and i think you are pretty great for caring for her...i wish you well!
I would love to be able to tell you a simple phrase that wou work but I don-t really know any. Instead let me direct you to a web site with some wonderful products. It is called nikken.com. The products are all natural...no drugs or harmful chemicals. There is one called -mental clarity- that would help with the memory, But there is so many other products there that could help with any other health problem she may be having. Please check out the site. If you have any questions or would like to inquire more info please feel free to contact me
well, explain to her exactly what happened and record it. or make a video. then show it to her the next time she acts up so she realizes she keeps doing the same thing. good luck!
constantley explain to her that she quite smoking. and if that doesn-t work, put her in a good nursing home that way, she-ll be watched over 24 7.
make it a point to brag on her just before the time and you notice she is fixing to ask or look for a cigarette tell her right then mom, im so glad you quit smoking two yrs ago it sure has improved your health dont you think,i know you had told me how you really had such a distaste for them, is it hard to do that i have a friend that is trying and i said i would ask you because most people cant do it the way you did.............good luck
Just freakin let the woman smoke. When you-re 86 you-ll understand. Can-t she just do what she wants? She-s sick anyway.
I have a simple solution to this problem. Buy her a whole food nutritional product called Via Viente. Her health will improve on every front. Their is no other product like this. It was developed after 12 years of research by leading doctors and scientist in the field of nutrition. Drinking this great tasting elixir will help her lose the urge to smoke as well as improve many other health concerns that she may have now. To learn more see the reference material below. If I can help you find this product or answer any questions write to me at boatclub@go.com. This will help more than you will ever imagine.
You probably can-t. Try posting signs/messages around the house saying that she quit and no more ciggs. See if you can get a CPA from your local masshealth/medicare type program, check with social security. They may give you some hours and you can get a break from caring for her.
Talk to her doctor about resources with dealing with people with dementia. They have to be watched 24-7 for a reason and some people know exactly what to do for these patients, so maybe you can get some training on how to help her better, or maybe even hire someone to come and help you during certain hours. It just seems like there should be a better way than her ending up crying herself back to sleep. :-)

Best way to quit smoking and stay quit? -

well the quitting part i have all ready accomplished, i have not smoked a cigarette in about 2 weeks. my only problem is once i get around friends who smoke i know ill probably want one. yes the physical addiction is gone but the mental is still there. so i guess the question is, how does one get of the mental want for a cigarette and how long does that mental want last?? im a 4 year smoker who has been at a pack pack and a half a day for 2 of those years.
congrats on quitting!
anyway, whenever you-re around your friends who smoke, have a beer or some good gum so it-ll distract you from the craving.

best i can come up with, hope it helps. :P

Ive just quit smoking. How long until cravings dissappear? -

I haven-t smoked for 48 hours now. I had been smoking for 11 years now about 2 packs per day and just decided and quit overnight. I think I am holding on really well but since I am living in a smokers paradise environment and everyone is smoking around me, even in my house how long will it take until the cravings disappear?
Whenever you feel like smoking, go eat a snack or something.
That will keep your mouth busy will you-ll have less of a craving. :)
hi Chronis..

well i have been quit for 5 Years, and now have a fleeting desire for a smoke... doesn-t last long.. about all i can say about it, is that the further away you are, from your last smoke... the less desire to pick one up..

don-t pick up another one, or you will start the whole thing over again.. i made that mistake several times.. thinking only one..

i will mention that the only way i was able to quit was with a support group..i attend nicotine anonymous meetings, both locally and on line.. meetings are as close as your computer..

congrats on those 48 hours..that-s huge..good luck on your quit in the end there is really no wrong way to quit

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
I-ve been completely quit for seven months. before that I was off and on for a long time. I-m sorry to say that those pesky cravings stick around for a while but they become less and less frequent with time. I don-t know if you can get away from the other smokers but it is SO hard to quit when people are smoking around you. If its possible, ask them to not smoke around you for a couple of weeks.
Craving NEVER go away. Bad news,m I know. Its environment related. Meaning if you have smoking buddies or live with people who smoke like you said, the cravings will be worse than if you completely removed yourself from everythiong that reminded you of cigarettes.
Worst at 3-5 days, will gradually get better. Figure 4 months is tolerable, a year and a half you-re feeling normal. But you-ll have some cravings for life. And it-s significantly faster/easier for some people, only way to know is to try it.
ive never smoked before but from what ive heard the first 3 days of quiting are the hardest but youll always want cigarettes from now on. if you want to repair your lungs start walking ( since you prolly cant run)

I want to quit smoking so badly ...any tips? -

I-ve been smoking for like 10 years already and I smoke more than a pack a day. I want to kick the habit for good. I just need some ideas.
Hey this is a terrible thing. My wife smoked for 9 years and she stopped in 1 month. All the free info you need is on the net. This website helped hew heaps to stop smoking just from the info.
Cut down the amount of cigs you smoke , decreasing the amount each day, go as long as you can in between cigs , the cravings usually begin mild then intensify they can get bad but they will start to get better ,so try to remind yourself that it will not last forever. set a quit date , like give yourself 30 days to cut down and quit , mark it on the calendar and keep it in a visible place and stick to it. get rid of all ashtrays and dont let anyone smoke around you or at least stay away from them while you are in the process of quitting. it helps to buy cigs that you dont like to help yourself stay away from them! change your routine a bit , stay away from the areas you usually smoke in and stay away from activities you usually smoke doing if possible.if the cravings get bad try to go to sleep while your asleep you wont be consciously wanting the cig. Its a very hard thing to do but its will be the best thing you could ever do for yourself and those around you! talk yourself thru the cravings tell yourself that you can do this , look at a ashtray how gross it looks and smells and imagine all that going into your lungs, smokers dont realize it but they really do stink bad!! and would you want the reason for your death to be because of a stupid smelly and extremely expensive cig? keep those thoughts in your mind as well. the hard parts will not last forever once you get through the bad you will feel so good about the accomplishment and not to mention smell alot better to! you can do it!!!!!
Go to your doctor. I-ve heard of medications that are for that and there-s also the nicotine patch you can buy over the counter at drug stores.
Perhaps you can find some useful tips in
http://www.quitnow.info.au
.
I went to the doctor and was prescribed Chantix. I didn-t think anything would work, but that medicine worked wonders. Good Luck!!
you can stop smoking 3 hours from now

Im trying to find a way to quit smoking easily, and by the way its not me the smoker, a freind, anyways,? -

is there any way to make my freind stop smoking without a patch, doesnt work for him, and isnt expensive? hes been a smoker for about 10 to 15 years now. HELP?
well isuccessfully quit ifirst prayed to have the taste taken from me, then i started buying cheap nasty brands, that iwould never ever smoke as a brand choice and cheap and when ever i,felt i,wanted a,cigg i would smoke what i had or nothing else ,then i smoked cigars and they were ok but not the same and weened off cigars easily and now i don-t have a taste for nothing nor do i feel an urge to smoke( ok)amen
you should tell your friend to start chewing gum or if it gets out of hands tell his parents or your but make sure he doesn-t find out that you told
Rusty-s right. Cold turkey is tough.
Find your friend a diabetic diet that drastically cuts down on the sugar, caffeine, sugar substitutes, processed carbs, etc. After your friend has been on the diet for about 2 weeks, then going cold turkey won-t cause the weight gain or cravings as trying it without the diet.

This is based on the assumption that your friend became addicted to smoking to control a previously unsuspected low blood sugar condition.
Patches: NO! It-s more of an emotional persistence because nicotine cannot be taken out through things as useless as patches etc.
Yep. Put -em down and don-t pick -em up again. My Dad quit smoking cold turkey after 30+ years of a 2-pack habit.

Takes guts, though...
You can-t make your friend stop smoking - he has to do it for himself - all you can do is give him the support that he needs and the information that he needs. I-m sure that if he really wants to quit he knows what he has to do. - Let him know you are there for him as a friend.
There is no -easy- way.

The idea of quitting smoking is more of a mental struggle than an addiction problem.

You body will ween it-s addiction off nicotine relatively quickly; within weeks only. But the social experiences tied to smoking (parties, stress reliever, that after dinner smoke, friends smoking, etc.) is what the hard part of quitting.

You really need to be mentally prepared to quit. I know I could list on and on the health problem associated with smoking (which you know yourself and people have probabaly told you) but that doesn-t matter. All the logical reasons mean nothing if you are not emotionally ready.

You need to set your mind to it. Plain and simple.

Good luck.... to your friend.

Just list techniques on ways to quit smoking. I am not interested in pay sites to quit so please don-t list any pay site programs. I plan on trying every technique you post to quit. Several people in my family are interested in techniques to quit smoking. Surely one will help. The more techniques the better.

Thanks

cold turkey, the patch, gum, zyban. not sure how long you been smoking. but if you been smoking for a while and a heavy smoker. take zyban or take anti-depressants to help w/ the w/ draws. that-s what my mother had to do to quit smoking.
All the answers given will cost you money. The only way to quit without paying is cold turkey.
If you don-t want to pay anything but want to see what-s available, check out the page: Ways to Stop Smoking at
http://www.quitguide.com

Remember that every day you smoke costs you money, so it usually is more cost effective to pay for help to quit quickly and for good.
When you find one that works, let me know too!! But remember, nobody likes a quitter!
If you get any good ones, let me know I am also trying to quit...I have tried everything
I smoke myself and I would have to say just drop the habit all together(dont buy them).Dont start new habits to stop another.
I successfully managed to quit last year for 10 months. I used patches, an inhalator and gum as well as regular visits to a cessation nurse. These and the willpower to want to quit may have been the answer?

Anyone ever use Smoke Away to quit smoking? -

A former co-worker used this a couple years ago after smoking for 25 years and she said it worked for her.

Anyone else use this? My boyfriend has been a long time smoker and he really needs to quit.

However, I just want to make sure people haven-t experienced any terrible side effects.
i used to smoke 3 packs of marlboro reds a day. i smoked 4 cigarettes on the way home from work one day and found my smoke away in the mail. I finished the last 3 cigarettes i had left and started the smoke away. I have never smoked since, for a while the smell of cigarette smoke even made me sick to my stomach. I dont know how it works but it does. The only catch is he has to want to quit and he has to use the smoke away correctly.
I saw one time that theres these lollipops that make you stop smoking you can get them at lyk CVS good luck ? melissa
Smoke Away Part One: Does It Work?

Kim Owens has smoked 25 years. She smoked two packs a day. She quit one time for four years and says she is ready to quit again.

Smoke Away Part One: Does It Work?

Want to quit smoking? How about in seven days! No kidding. And for good. That-s what the makers of the Smoke Away claim.

We gave her the Smoke Away to test. She had to take 64 herbal supplements for seven days to help calm her nerves and tobacco aids to help curb her cravings.

Here is Kim seven days later and says it-s been good...sort of. -Pain. Torture. Misery. But I dropped my blood pressure 20 points, I have put on three pounds. I have managed to clean the clothes off the treadmill and use it,- said Kim with a half smile in her face.

Kim reports that after seven days, she has felt absolutely nothing from the herbal supplements from the Smoke Away program. -The little homeopathic things under your tongue is just candy,- she said.

Kim says that after three days on the Smoke Away, her hopes of quitting for good didn-t look optimistic. -I-ve snuck some cigarettes. Ten or less in seven days. I went through my ashtray. It was a pitiful site,- she admitted.

In fact, since her debut last week, people have recognized her as the -lady who-s quit smoking.- Which she says made it hard for her to sneak around.

Last Friday, Kim said her cravings were strong. The medicine in Smoke Away just wasn-t helping. What did she do? She says she broke down and tried to buy a pack at the shop. -The guy opens the window and he sees me and starts laughing. And I-m thinking, he-s not laughing at me, I-m just self conscious,- said Kim.

She orders her cigarettes and she says the attendant gets them for her. -He holds them up against the window and says -are these them?- And I said yes, those are it. I need them! He starts laughing again,- she told the story.

Kim said nevermind and drove away and never got those cigarettes.

So perhaps the Smoke Away doesn-t work to help you stop smoking, but maybe the power of television does?

Kim says that she will continue to stop smoking. She says one week in not enough time for any one to quit.

Also, the Smoke Away cost us $60. It guaranteed it would help you stop smoking in 7 days for good. It did not work at all!
for the 1st wk he/she me be irritable ask or consult a doctor to for the cigaret patch for the nicotine addiction and when he is to last patch ask to go to the gym he will gain a little weight. been there done that but unfortunately I am still smoking due to my job. it-s very stressfull
Smoke Away doesn-t have any harmful side effects and it does work.
Nicotine is the #1 cause of illness, lost time from work, disability, - death in the US. It leads to 500 000 deaths YEARLY which is the # of soldiers lost in the entire 20th century. If any intervention worked it would be front page news and you would not need to ask this question. That being said any smoking cessation intervention helps as it begins with the person stating their desire to quit. 1 year later however no more people quit by Smoke Away than just stopping although there are no known health risks.
Whenever I quit smoking witch can happen a couple of times a year I use dip, Skoal stairght, any time I am at work and all my firends are firign up and I get the usual urge to bum one or you have that idiot *** whole who always offers you a ciggerette even though your trying to quit I through in a dip and all my cravings are no more, then about a week after I have quit smoking I quit dipping cause I find it easier to quit dipping than smoking, if you wonder why I start smoking somtimes I cant really tell you other than last time it was from high stress. But I have mangeged not to keep the habit up with dip...hope this helps,

Whats the best way to quit smoking (hopefully from someone who has done it)? -

Ive tried the hypnosis, gum, cold turkey, etc... smoking sucks and I don-t want to do it anymore.... as i light up
You have to want to.
I was smoking about 3 packs a day, and I just decided to quit and I did cold turkey.
when you find out I want to know too, I can pick one up without thinking at times and I so want the smell out of my clothes, out of my hair and out of my home
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quite smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK!
You need to really want this. Try hypnosis again, but commit to it. Regress if you need to... with hypnosis.
I think you are already on the right path and you should be proud of yourself..I gave up smoking nearly 2 years ago and it was the best thing I have ever done,no kidding..ok so it was difficult, I won-t lie..my method was to use the nicotine patches ( the 24 hour kind) and I used them for only 4 weeks, what happens with the 24 hour patch , is while you sleep, you are getting the hit of nicotine that your body craves in the morning, but the side effects turn you off the patches,,you will have some sleepless nights and the most vivid craziest dreams for a couple of weeks..try it, I can really recommend it.and throw out every ashtray, lighter, and any other stuff that reminds you of smoking. If you like to have a smoke after dinner, eat an apple instead..if you like one with a tea or coffee, chew on a breadstick or something, and try to keep your hands occupied as much as possible..and the most important thing, get out and get active, do something that will boost your confidence and self esteem...just to let you know that I ride the bus to work and when someone sits beside me who smokes,I can smell it and it turns my stomach.. I think you can really do it if you want and since you tried before , you know what to expect..best of luck and get healthy !!! :)
i have a friend who quit with nicotine patches
I think it is something YOU have to want. My husband smoked for 8 years and he quit while deployed in Iraq. It was just his time to quit. He said that he didn-t want to die from something that could have been prevented. He did use the patch for two weeks...but that was it.

Good luck and you CAN do it!!
go get your ears zapped, its crazy but it works
Quitting smoking is extremely difficult. The withdrawl makes us not want to, but we know the risks and we know that they are not worth it. For anyone who wants to end their nicotine addiction, check out www.stopsmokingcleveland.com. This is the MOST effective method on the market. It is 86% effective and the details of the program are on the website (no signing up or submitting your information).

I tried this program and it changed my life. I-ve tried ACS, patches, gum, hypnosis, accupuncture. I-ve done them all.
P.S. Allen Carr is only 20% effective.

I quit smoking and now everything taste saltier, does it go away? -

They say is normal after the abstinece, specially that I smoke for 20 years, but will it go away soon or it will stay for a while?
Please help me...
It-s just your taste buds coming back to life, should go away in about 3-6 weeks! Congrats on quitting smoking!!

EVITAR A TODA COSTA…

I Want To Quit Smoking But Hubby Doesnt--What Do I Do?? -

I Want To Quit Smoking But Hubby Doesnt--What Do I Do?? -

My hubby is being a bit of a jerk and doesn-t want to quit on January 1st like I do. How will I quit smoking when the person I live with will be smoking still? Has anyone else encountered this? How do you handle it?
I quit smoking Jan. 4th of 2006. YEAH!!! Almost 1 year. I used the store brand nicotine gum and this worked great for me. I don-t have a partner that smoked but one that didn-t. I quit for me first and then for all the others in my family. This is something that you have to do for yourself whether your hubby wants to or not. Take care of yourself. I quit drinking 5 years ago also. My spouse did not (he-s a casual drinker and doesn-t drink often) but he still drinks in front of me when I-m home. I just did that for ME also. This was hard too but I guess sometimes you have to have a lot of will power. Even if your husband doesn-t want to quit smoking with you, maybe he-ll have enough common courtesy/decency to smoke outside when he has to. Ask him since he won-t quit with you to at least do this much for you.
GOOD LUCK!
If you really really want to stop smoking then do it. Do not let the fact that your husband still smokes be an issue as this is merely an excuse not to quit. My mother quit smoking for a year a long time ago but then started again because -my dad didn-t quit-. Long story short she never asked him to quit so it was just an excuse for her to start smoking again. Quit and don-t worry about your husband not quiting because if you really want to quit you can do it either with or without help depending on your situation.
You-re not one and the same person as your husband. Just do it. Although, once you have quit, you might find it easier to not smoke any longer if you ban smoking in your home.

You haven-t said anything about if, but you have children, it-s agood idea to ban it in the house anyway.

Your husband, however, could use to be reminded of that old adage -if Mama ain-t happy, ain-t nobody happy-.

Congratulations on your decision.
are you my wife? i am dealing with the same thing, same quiting day too

i am thinking about quiting but not sure, if you want to quit that is your business and shouldn-t matter what someone else does.
It-s going to make it a little harder, but good for you for making that decision.

The first thing to do, if you haven-t already is to make him smoke outside. No cigs in the house.

When you-re tempted, just remind yourself of your goal, and why you-re doing this. Hey, you may even pressure him into quitting when he sees how well you-re doing. And when he has to go outside in the cold to get a fix. :)
Talk to your nearest doctor on how to quit you and your hubby-s smoking. Remember that Quiting Smoking takes a lot of practice...
It-s called willpower. You can-t make him quit smoking. It-s his choice, you can-t make it for him. YOu can ask him to compromise and only smoke outside or in the basement or garage, etc. (But then again you-d still smell it on his clothes, so that might create temptation). But you just have to suck it up (so to speak) and use your willpower
