What should I do to quit smoking? -

only live once
if you reaaaaly want to quit do it
if not, dont think about it
make your self have no way possible to get cigarettes. if you-re an adult, it-s a lot harder. if you have a wife, give her the keys to your car or something, or have her reward you if you go a day without a pack or something. but mostly make it physically impossible to buy them, or smoke them

if you had provided more information such as if you-re a kid or not, it would be easier to help

but if you are a kid, its not hard just eliminate all sources
Set a quit smoking date and make a promise to yourself. Perhaps involve your friends with motivating you.

I did compile a series of quit smoking videos for my promises website. Watching these might help

Convince yourself, and I mean CONVINCE yourself that you are going to get cancer and die if you don-t. I quit 4 years ago and MAN I wish I could still smoke. I got myself all paranoid and one day just quit. I will always want a cigarette I think.
You can quit smoking in 38 minutes and 13 seconds!

How do I finally quit smoking cigarettes for good? -

It-s mind over matter...seriously. You need to get it set in your mind that you will never smoke another cigarette again. It is the habit of smoking that keeps you going back to it...not the addiction like most people think. Withdrawl lasts only about a week or two...the rest is habit. When your mind gives you that signal of -light one up now-, you need to very firmly tell yourself -NO!- and get up - do something else with your hands. You need to deprogram yourself. Remember, you were not born with the smoking habit, you programmed yourself to smoke! You can do it!

Hypnosis
That needs a lot of determination. Ist decrease no. cigrrates slowly and than quite. .

Can quitting smoking really make you gain weight? -

I am a smoker of 10 years and i have recently decided to quit smoking but i am afraid of gaining weight. I have heard that smoking affects a persons apatite and makes them eat less and so when they quit they can eat regularly again but if this is true i do not believe i will have a prob because i am a pig even thought i smoke, so if you could tell me what it is that makes you gain weight when you quit i would be very thankful!
Your taste buds definitely come back to life after quitting smoking. That will not make you gain weight. Overeating will. Good luck.
I think the reason that most people gain weight is because it slows down their metabolism which makes them digest food slower. Another reason is because a lot of people turn to munchies to help them when they are wanting a cigarette. It would be normal to gain a few pounds in the beginning but I wouldn-t worry too much about it. You could always just watch what you eat a bit until your body gets used to not smoking just in case but it-s totally up to you. Good job for quitting too!
The best thing you can do is start exercising. This will help you stick with quitting and help keep your weight down. If you have a big oral fixation thing going on, make sure to find something to put in your mouth that doesn-t contain calories. Chewing gum may help.

Yes, the average quitter gains a few pounds. But you can control that through diet or exercise and the extra weight is in any case less unhealthy than smoking.
Yes, and you should follow a program that help you not become fatter after quit smoking, try my way: http://free-quit-smoking.info
you will gain 10 pounds then a little later lose it its your body-s reaction to quitting

im 14 almost 15 i have been smoking for a year and i need to stop
im dying for one now
and just plz help
Perhaps you can find some useful tips in
http://www.quitnow.info.au
.
I-d like to give you a fact that results from smoking.
Did you know that smoking speeds up the aging process, causing smokers to die on average, seven to thirteen years sooner than nonsmokers? Research proves that smokers also tend to die prematurely of heart disease and cancer. In general, smoking makes you look older. Smoking gives you wrinkles, it creates smile lines around your mouth, it stains your teeth and fingertips and it constricts your blood vessels and robbing your skin of nutrients.
I hope these can make quit smoking.
good for you for wanting to quit. There are all kinds of gum and patches but after the first week or so the physical withdrawal symptoms will pass. Stay away from other smokers! You aren-t even old enough to buy cigarettes, where did you get all that money and who bought them for you? Keep your hands busy doing something.

Hypnotherapy to quit smoking? -

I-m thinking about getting hypnotised to quit smoking. I-ve heard of people who quit smoking using this method i.e. friend of a friend etc but never met someone. It costs €200 for one session and apparently all I need is one session. The cost doesn-t bother me too much, although I won-t be able to afford it until another couple of months. Can anyone who tried this give me some info and their opinion please?

Thanks
Yes , it works but one session won-t be enough.

You have to *want* to stop, I guess you know that, but did you know that fear tactics, such as putting health warnings and Photoshopped disgusting images on cigarette packets actually makes you smoke more?

So is putting up the price, or hiding the packets from view, reverse phsycology.

You can input the same information as a hypnotist would yourself, visit support at
http://www.friendswithcancer.com.au

I have been hypnotised before, but not because of smoking. I was suffering with an anxiety thing.

Hypnotism will only work if you really believe it! The Dr. was able to contact my unconscious mind, which was very freaky but the same time amazing. He somehow made me lift my own thumb without me knowing it, this is how they test it-s working.

Your awake throughout it all, just with your eyes closed, so don-t be afraid that you will not wake up or anything like that.

But to be honest I do recommend it, and if i had any problems in my future life, i-d be getting hypnotised in a flash.

Any more questions, feel free to add detail to this question, and i will edit my answer.

Take care, you are doing a good thing.
I was hypnotised and it did work. Worth spending your money on it. Only things was i did not really want to stop smoking and carried on trying to smoke and i am still smoking. But it does work. It was done by a hypnotist in SA as a test.:)
I was hypnotised and it didn-t work. I came out of the building gasping for a fag! However it does work well for some people so I would give it a go if I were you, it-s worth a try! Good luck x
I don-t think it works unless you really really want to quit...you have to make the decision to quit before you have the hypno.
it workd for my dad but after one year he started again becuase he is too adicted he startd when he was 12 and now he is 45 so yh aslo he is a chain smoker so yh i would give it a go

COPD life expectancy if you quit smoking? -

COPD life expectancy if you quit smoking? -

I was wondering if anyone knows someone with COPD. My mom was just diagnosed, I don-t know exactly what percentage of her lung is diseased, I just know it-s in one lung, and she is now on Advair. If she manages to quit smoking, will she be ok? I mean, will she live more than just a few years? I can-t imagine losing her, she-s only 56. My mother in law just passed away a few months ago at 62 from lung cancer, I can-t even handle this right now. I AM going to make sure somehow she quits smoking, but does anyone know if it truly helps and will prolong her life a lot? I want her to live to a ripe old age of 85. I don-t want her to just have 5 or 8 years. Thanks.
LISTEN to me VERY closely. I have COPD. I have it spread thru out BOTH of my lungs. I am 60 years old. I am on oxygen 24/7. I am on many drugs. YOU didn-t ask about my health, you came on here and asked a question regarding your mother and I am going to answer your question.

This DR. FRANK is SO INCORRECT. The ONLY TWO things I agree with that he said is, -There are not any drugs that can improve COPD-. And the second item was, -your mother has to quit smoking-.

He referred to inhaled steroids such as Advair only being used on extremely bad cases of COPD in the U.K. with less than half their lung capacity. THAT could be true in the U.K. BUT here in the U.S. every other person is on ADVAIR. There are different strengths of Advair and it is still very widely used here.............
He had no right to scare you with -things are already very bad.-

IF your mom has COPD in ONE lung and the other lung is fine, she could live until she is 102. You only need ONE lung to live. IF the COPD lung is that bad, they can remove it. Your mother-s prognosis is EXCELLENT if you are privy to everything and know this is the truth..........I would give anything for one good lung.

Your mom can get a lot of help to stop smoking. I am sure her doctors would give her the drugs and whatever she needs to quit. BUT she will have to do it on her own. You cannot MAKE her do it. My daughter still smokes and she watched her grandmother die and now I have it. You just DON-T make a smoker quit...........

Your mom having COPD is worlds away from lung cancer. She has a second chance at life, a lot of people do not......I hope she learns that.
Also she has diabetes, anemia, hypothyroidism, now COPD and a spot on her lung they-re watching b/c it-s too small to biopsy. So you could say i-m freaking out right now. I just hope she-s not one of the percentage that still smokes even after being diagnosed with this.

She-s lucky in some respects, I have COPD,, I use sprivia and asmenex (cortisteroid) daily I only have 30% lung capacity
I have oxygen as a PRN thing - I-m almost 67.

I do cardio/pulmonary rehab, I can-t say enough about the program

If you rehab for a few hours a week, you have an 87% better chance of staying out of the hospital

There is a statement about excersise that might be an incentive

~If you can walk 1/4 mile, odds are you will live 3 more years ~

I do a mile in 27 min

The first year I had problems, I was in the hosp 5 times

I have 11 more days to make it a year w/o going to the hospital

Rehab cost me $362 a year One trip to the Hospital is over $500.

If you get a good rehab like I did, They have a pulmanory Tech, A cardio tech, A respiratory RN and a monitor that goes to a DR if you have trouble

IMHO you can-t beat the price
Life expectancy varies. It all depends on how bad your COPD is, what diseases make up your COPD, if you have any other health concerns and your current age.

I can tell you that if you enroll in a pulmonary rehab program, it can increase your quality of life and may ever extend your life.
i just quit smoking last friday, and your mom-s story gives me strength.

i hope everything works out for you guys, i love my mom a lot too...
You sound so caring, she-s lucky to have you as a son. COPD can be mild, moderate or severe. So it depends what level your mother has. Giving up smoking won-t help her lungs recover but it will slow down the deterioration and if she looks after herself and gets proper treatment she might well live to a ripe old age. But I think you should go with your mum on her next appointment and ask the experts.
There is no set amount of time to live...depending on her life style, and that she quits and manages to stay that way will only improve things...there are treatments and centers that help manage the copd , make sure she gets all the help she can.
My father died recently, with COPD as one of the causes. He was 89, Diagnosed w/ emphysema 30 years ago.

He was a carpenter, worked with asbestos, and was on oxygen 24/7 the last 2 years of his life. He was also a smoker. It was only in the last 3-4 years he had problems catching his breath.
So, she could be around a LONG time.

Stopping smoking NOW is the best thing ANYBODY could do for their health,

Was she diagnosed by a pulmonary specialist?

You might consider a visit to one for a thorough evaluation. There are inhalers which do a world of good.

Run this by her primary care doctor.

I hope 20 years from now you can tell me she-s doing well.
No way to predict her prognosis, but to have any chance of getting anywhere she must stop smoking NOW! I like your optimism but unfortunately even when given this diagnosis, and even if SHE, rather than you where talking about giving up smoking, the chances of her succeeding are not much better than 14%! So you will certainly have your work cut out.

No drugs improve the existing lung damage in COPD. In UK inhaled steroid are now only recommended for COPD patients whose FEV1 has dropped to -50% of normal. If this was the criteria used for her therapy decision then things are already very bad.

No sense at all beating about the bush, Ignoring therapy , none of which does more then decrease exacerbation-s her only chance is to stop at once.
COPD is a slow killing disease! If the person stop smoking(it-s a must!)whit normal medication,(Advair,Albuterol,etc..)you can get to the 80-s.Go to web sites and check what really COPD.You can learn a lot and show your Mom, what cigarettes can do for the health

I have been smoking for a while now, I am scared that it will hurt my baby, i want to stop but it is so hard, also I am scared that when I stop that there will be more stress and that will hurt my baby, What should I do?
Cut down slowly, dont let yourself go into withdrawl all at once.
Find something else to keep you occupied...maybe exercise? Cooking...something like that. If you are working out, you will want to be healthier in order to feel better.
Just dont expect it to happen all at once...cut down, even 1 a day, until you are not smoking barely at all. Also, clean your house, and dont smoke inside. That should help
Whenever you feel like you want a cigarette, have something else. For instance my friend ate an apple every time she wanted one. Haha. You don-t have to do that but do you understand? SHe quit smoking in under 4 months!

Will I gain weight if I quit smoking but carefully watch what I eat? And if so, how much? -

Will I gain weight if I quit smoking but carefully watch what I eat? And if so, how much? -

I have been smoking roughly a pack a day since I was fourteen.

(I-m nineteen now.)
No. If you watch what you eat you won-t. I quit and didn-t gain any weight by being careful.
Yes you will.
I quit smoking and I REDUCED what I ate plus exercised and still managed to put on pounds. It slows your metabolism and takes a long time to stabilize it again.
You can expect to initially gain a little but it should taper off and you-ll be able to lose it eventually.
But the good outweighs the bad. Either gain a few pounds you can eventually lose or smoke forever and end up dying a terrible hacking coughing death. Your choice. And good luck.
People who quit smoking might gain between 10 to 25 pounds of weight. I stopped smoking 4 months ago and I lost 5 pounds !. My doctor was surprised and asked me what I did. I told him I just watched what I ate, mainly avoiding chocolate :)
However, the main thing is to stop smoking, once you start breathing better and regaining your lung capacity ( you don-t think it has diminished until you stop smoking) you will feel more like walking, running or doing sports. These activities will control your weight more than dieting, because even if you weight more, it will be because you have built muscles, and you still will look thinner ( and what-s more important, healthier)
Take into account that it is going to be tough. I smoked for years, and I have quit at least three times before now. I have been up to five years without smoking and I would -fall- again. This time I used Chantix under my doctor recommendation, I only used it for about 12 days, and after that to smoke a cigarette was yucky ! unbelievable. Well. Now I don-t smoke, and when the idea crosses my mind...that repugnance comes back, what-s GREAT. Good luck and do your best effort. Don-t let the idea of gaining weight to stop you. Even if you are already overweight, there are many methods to help you to lose weight, if you continue smoking your organism is not going to be as strong as it should be, and what-s the purpose of being thin if you are not strong enough ?

There was a slogan many years ago in my country to help people to stop smoking and it said something like: -Things you can do with your mouth instead of smoking

Sing, kiss, whistle, chew gum, smile, talk, eat . etc-
Smoking has nothing to do with weight. There are like 4 things going on with this myth.
The act of putting things in your mouth, boredom or anxiety causing you to eat, replacing one addiction with another.

You will not put on weight if you do not start to eat more or move less. So don-t worry.
Pick up another habit like chewing gum.. That-s all smoking is really is a habit, and most people replace smoking with snacking. Instead of snacking, do something else. Chewing gum is probably the most popular habit, but you could pick up a small hobby even.. like knitting lol.. I know that sounds stupid.. but try to pick up something creative like drawing or painting. Or you could go for short walks. Try to find a task/habit that interests you to fill that part of your life.
if you are careful about what you eat, then no, you will not gain any weight. the weight gain people experience when quitting smoking is caused by the increase in food consumption. sort of replacing the habit.
You will gain weight no matter what you eat, its your body-s lack of nicoteen (i spelled it wrong but idc)

And how have you done it? I want to quit so bad. I accually quit a few weeks ago, lasted a week and a half :( I just want to be healthy and feel health again. Help! any quitting suggestions?
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
I quit 2 years ago. I knew I needed to quit but it just had to be the correct time, so one morning I woke up and said today is the day. I did it cold turkey. After 3 days I thought I have gone through a miserable 3 days so why would I start again and just have to do another 3 days like that again so I kept going. Not smoking is one of the coolest things I have ever done. Good Luck to you.
I quit smoking cold turkey. I was really sick with a cold at the time, and I just didn-t feel like smoking, since my lungs were all congested anyway. Then I just quit buying cigarettes and resisted the urge to smoke. Its really a mind over matter deal. You just trick your mind into thinking you DON-T NEED cigarettes, and that they stink and are disgusting... you have to want to quit more than you want to smoke cigarettes. Just think of all the money you will save! Good luck!
I started smoking when I was 13 (just to try it)
I finally quit (for the last time) 32 years later.
I haven-t smoked in 6 years.

The way that worked for me was part physical and part psychological.

I learned a lot from -Smoke Enders- I don-t know if they-re still around, but it teaches you how to identify your specific -triggers- (the phone, after a meal, when you-re stressed) and how to delay automatically picking up a cigarette. And... how to look at smoking and smokers in a different way. (It used to be so cool -- now it-s not)

On the psych side-- once I dealt with NOT smoking after meals, coffee, etc. I had to really look at what my triggers were and how I could handle them without a cigarette. For example, I realized that my main problem was when I got angry, I had to have a cigarette.

Now, I don-t necessarily recommend this -- but, I had a prescription for a very low dose of diazepam. (2mg) Once I had stopped smoking for every reason except that anger (at this point, i was only smoking 3-5 a day) I would take a pill-- if needed. (one a day) It calmed the anger, I didn-t feel like i NEEDED to smoke-- and after a week or so, didn-t want to.

I still have moments when I think, -Oh, man I want a cigarette.- But, I just gently tell myself, -No.- And then, it passes.

It is the toughest thing I ever did. And I-m more proud of quitting than anything else. (really).

It will happen for you when you-re ready.

Good luck!!!! You can do it.
Just quit.

Throw away your cigaretts...

Throw away your ash trays...

Throw away your lighters...

and QUIT.
ask your doctor to put you on the pill. it has help me. the thing with it is that you can still smoke, unlike the gum and the patch. what the pill does is that it completely takes away your cravings. after a couple of days on the pill, you find yourself not being able to finish a ciagrette, then not even wanting one. the key is that you have to continue to take the pill consistently for atleast 3 months. not bad since you have probably been smoking for years. the only side effects i had was dry mouth. but i carried around gum and water for that. good luck. email me if you want more info upfromnutin@yahoo.com
I used to smoke 20-30 Marlboro Reds cigarettes a day, but by using the nicotine patch, I was able to put out my last smoke and never have so much as a puff again. That was many years ago.

Once you decide to quit, tell yourself you are a non-smoker. Don-t say -I-m trying to quit- because that gives you the option of failing. Say you HAVE quit and are a non-smoker. It-s not as difficult that way.
I quit 27 years ago. At the time, I was smoking between 3-4 packs a day and could barely breathe. My doctor told me he would give me medication to mask the symptoms of bronchial asthma, but in three years I would be a weekly patient of his and in five years I would be dead. I never smoked another cigarette, and I quit cold turkey, the only way that worked for me. Hard, but doable. Good luck!!

Chow
i was going back to my home state. i stopped to get gas. got back on the road, reached for my cigarettes. i saw i had only 2 left. i had enough gas to get to my final destination and didn-t want to stop until i got there. i smoked the final 2 cigarettes before my final stop. that-s when i decided to quit, that my friend was 12 years ago.
I just kept thinking like you are how stupid it is to risk my life for something that you have to be addicted to,to enjoy.I quit a few times before it stuck. Now I have been glad I quit for twenty years.I am pulling for you.E-mail me anytime you need some encouragement.
my girlfriend is trying to quit at the mo and it feels like im the one going through hell!
Everyone is different. I quit 22 years ago. I started going to a class to stop smoking that the American Cancer Society put on through the local hospital. When they showed me pictures of healthy lungs and lungs that were from a smoker, it made me think about really wanting to quit. You just have to have the will power to say you are going to do it. They didn-t have the patches and stuff that they got now when I decided to quit so I don-t know how they work. Hang in there if you really and truly want to quit you can and will. Hope it works out for you.

im trien to quit smoking but like i like being high, but i also want to go back to school and get a new job, any ideas on how to get my mind of the budda
You may want to take passionflower. It has been used in India for all type addiction even Cocaine with great results. It is also effective for addictions because it is an anti-anxiety.

It is readily available and is on th e GRAS list as safe. It can be taken in high doses with no side effects.

Can be found at any health food store.
Why would you want to quit? My bf smokes alot and has a great job. If you stay focused it wont hurt your studies. It will make you study more!!
Well, you could check out the therapy route, which is what I would suggest, but if you just can-t bring yourself to see a therapist, I-d suggest that you rid your home of anything that reminds you of your habit and stop hanging out w/ people who-re still using. Basically, make it as hard as possible for yourself to go back to using.

And, GOOD FOR YOU!!! I wish you all the luck in the world!
it is called self-control and self-discipline. Get your fuzzy butt out of the chair, put the bong down in the trash, and get your sh*t together.
Don-t buy it!!!!
Dude, you can keep smoking and at least go back to school. The job thing is not so sure of, because of those damn drug tests. But get a job at like McDonalds or something I am sure they dont give drug tests. Freakin light one up for me.
good for you... you just took the first step, try a rehab program... they can help you with this... talk to others for support too... and sometimes (i know it-s sad) but change your friends to non-pot smokers... this helps lower your chances of smoking and also increases your fun other ways so you forget about it
Ask Ricky Williams how he stopped. LOL
If you can stay sober LONG enough for all the stuff you let slide catch up, you will find out that you like yourself better SOBER.

Being sober is only a hassle at first because you wind up facing the responsibilities you-ve let slide.

Get to know yourself... you have to be SOBER to do that.

God doesn-t make junk; you are more special than you give yourself credit for.

Try meditation to relax.... no negative side effects and you will pass every drug test.

You may have to change your environment - friends to get away from the drugs.... (they are NOT your responsibility)

Today is the first day of the rest of your life... make the most of it. You can be anything you choose, with God.

You will be surprised at how great you are, if you would just stay sober long enough to find out!

Blessings to you.
yeah. you know what you do? you sit there and remind yourself of all you-re going to miss one day when the crap kills ya. cuz drs have found out that you can get addicted hard core to this stuff...and it can lead to death if not stopped. from what i know of it. so think about your future. job, family, wife...all that you-ll miss if you die from the drugs or dont- get off of them now.

Absolutely and Congratulations for quitting! I too used to smoke and it was hard for me to stop smoking, but I-m sticking to it this time.

Yes, you will begin to see some signs and one of them is the texture of your skin. For some reason people who smoke have rough skin, more wrinkles and age quicker.

Smoking affects everything in your body from internal to external.

Sometimes when you stop your throat will start to clear of the mucus accumulated in the lungs. So expect some of that to go on.

I hope you stick it out and not smoke. It-s the best decision you can make. We need to stay away from those toxins its not needed in our bodies!

Keep up the good work!
Probably

Good on you for quitting!
Could be. Ever look up the list of toxic substances in cigarette smoke? It the worst thing in the world you can put in your body. I did it for 35 years.
Congratulations btw!
Keep going! Think of how great you look in a few weeks! :)
yes your circulation improves within 12 hours of quiting smoking, increasing the bloodflow and inturn nutrients to your face - skin resulting in a brighter healthier complexion. and the benifets will continue to increase as weeks go by. cosmetically your skin will improve and your hair will be healthier and shinier as will your nails and you-ll feel geat also.

congradulations on quitting

I tried every thing patches.... gums ... but nothing really ever works!!
You will face pain. Forget about it not being painful. I-ve never really believed in the patch since I don-t think you can combat cravings for nicotine with doses of nicotine except in EXTREME cases. Go cold turkey. That-s the best way possible. Get through withdrawal, and live a longer, healthier life! Just plan it out beforehand or see your doctor about it.
Best way to quit is cold turkey. It will behard. pick-up a new hobby to keep yourself occupied
Try Allan Carr-s -The Easy Way- book.

Most successful method I know.
Hi YA
If you have tried them and they didn-t help you, You will have to go with will power. Its not easy, i smoke and i know i shouldn-t say this (but if the doctor told me i will die tomorrow if i don-t give up) I would run to my nearest and buy 60 fags and get them all smoked for real. I just could not do it. But i wish you all the best in trying YA
Stop buying them. You cant smoke what you dont have.
I have-nt found a way yet,I suppose it boils down to will power but mine is -nt strong enough
Give up, who for you or the moaners who go on and on
about us smokers if you want to DO it and suffer or do as i do
puff away and DON`T do it.
The fact of the matter is, when you WANT to quit, you will.

I was a smoker for 15 years and -tried to quit- twice before I actually did. I tried gum the first time and patches the second. Both times I ended up smoking again with a couple of months. Absolutely pointless.

I know now that the reason it was pointless is because its not just a habit you-ve formed, its an addiction that is comparable physically to heroin. You are addicted to nicotine, whether you admit it or not. This is the first thing that you need to acknowledge to yourself...and I don-t just mean think it, I mean believe it. You have an addiction. At which point, when you truly believe it, you will instantly realise that topping up/replacing your addiction with another form of -hit- (eg gum/patches) is completely pointless. The only true way to rid yourself of it is to prove to yourself that you have the will power to go without.

This is the gods honest truth and its the only way you will quit and *stay off it forever*. To bring this home to you a bit more, I highly recommend a book that I read when I decided to quit. Its called Allen Carr-s Easy Way to Stop Smoking...and you can buy it on amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allen-Carrs-Easy…

It probably sounds like a load of hocus pocus, self help, hippy crap to you....because it certainly did to me....but a friend of mine who had quit, give me a copy that someone had given him and just told me to read it. You have to continue smoking whilst you read it and it tells you about the reason why you are addicted to the thing in your hand...its kind of a psychological deprogramming...it wouldn-t work without the cig in your hand. When you-ve finished the book, the last paragraph tells you to finish the last cigarette you will ever smoke and then you have quit.

It truly works, I-ve seen it work for a bunch of my friends which is the only reason I read it in the first place. Give it a go. I went from smoking 40 marlboro red a day to nothing. I was completely addicted and stopped immediately. I never even craved.
There-s a drug called Zyban...also known as Wellbutrin. It was originally marketed as an anti-depressant but it was found to have a positive effect on addictive cravings. You-ll need a prescription for it but it is widely used by the medical profession to help folks quit smoking.
In addition, you will need something to keep your hands busy. Nicorette make a product that resembles a cigarette and when you put it in your mouth and puff on it, it offers the same resistance a real cigarette does.
A dyed in the wool smoker needs 7-9 cigarettes to satisfy the cravings yet they smoke 20 - 30 cigarettes a day. That-s because the act of smoking is as addictive as the cigarette itself.

Try these and good luck with your project. It-s a hard habit to break.
dont its 2 hard+pointless as were breathin random toxic fumes evryday anyway
Just do as I did: Say -When I-ve finished these I-m not buying any more. Then finish them, and don-t. It sounds a bit harsh, But I did it that way, and without any of this -withdrawal symptoms- nonsense either! - AND I was on 100+ a day when I did it!
If this prat can do it, ANYBODY CAN !!!
where patches
Addiction is never painless to resolve. It takes determination and hard work. A supportive environment and finding other ways to spend the time you use to spend smoking. For instance most smokers smoke automatically after a meal, so go for a walk instead. Or you may smoke while having cocktails, then try snacking on nuts or popcorn.

If it were an easy addiction, then there would be far fewer smokers in the world.

Hang in there, if you can stay clean for 6 weeks you-ll feel like a new person and a lot of the craving will have disappeared.

It-s a -one day at a time- process..

Good luck....
there is no easy way you need to stop staight off and you need buckets of will power
The best way to quit is to never start in the first place. Since that didn-t work for you, I suggest you go cold turkey. Also, I would like to suggest you put all that money you save by not smoking into a hobby. I highly suggest you take up model railroading.
Hi,
To quit smoking, first you must have try many way what people tell you. Taking sweet, gums and etc.....
Well, i am a smoker too, like you now trying out in everything people said or visiting doctor for help. I can say is all bullshit.
My experience is my mind, whether your mind is set or not?
If you really want to stop you must first set your mind telling yourself to stop and throw the whole packet away. As for me, is because I have a chest-pain. Then go club with friends who are smoker also. Can-t take it and my backside itchy went to start smoking back again. Before you quit mind if I ask how long you been smoking? If for many many donkey year than you better consult a Doctor before you stop.
For my case, doctor advice me to smoke less, for the time being. And cut down slowly till I can total stop an end the whole thing..You can mail me and share : shellman8888@yahoo.com.sg
Challenge yourself. That-s what I did. Be determined to quit. Do not smoke for a day. If you have the urge, do something else to keep yourself (busy) from lighting up that cigarette and stay away from people who smoke. Then the next day, remind yourself that you didn-t smoke yesterday and say if I didn-t smoke yesterday why can-t I do it today. Preoccupy yourself. Do the sdame thing the following day. Just challenge yourself. The first 2-6 weeks will be hard (for me it is) that-s why you to stay away from people who smoke because everytime you smell it it will really smell verygood to you and will make you feel you want to try just a puff. Just take it one day at a time. The next thing you know you haven-t smoke in a long time and you might even hate the smell of cigarette. That-s what happened to me I hate the smell and it gives me headache (now) especially when I smell it on my clothes or hair.

Don-t give up trying. If this didn-t work for you try another way. Just don-t give up. If there-s a will there-s a way...
the best way to quit is never to start!
Try Chewing Gum.
Do you really want to quit? Have you listed all the advantages you can think of for quitting? Such as smelling better, food tasting better, health benefits long term, etc.? I-m sure you could add plenty of things to the list of advantages. Quit smoking because you want all of those things.
If you have been thinking about quitting because it does damage to you, those around you, cost mega bucks..... These and other things like these are true but you may be feeling coerced into quitting. Coercion has too much fall-out and it-s only a band-aid.
You may try acupuncture (from a reliable person), hypnosis, other products for helping you quit.
You should feel proud that you are working on this and even if you have tried many ways, you just found some that aren-t for you. Now you can rule those out and use other methods. Good luck, I-d like you to have a great quality of life.
throw them out the window - cold turkey is the best way to go
Ween yourself off it a bit at a time. Step by step. Thats what I did. Then get it down so that you only smoke when you-re at the pub, then cut down again. If you cut down one at a time, slowly, your body has time to adjust.

good luck!
i have been smoking for 6 yrs and one day i just decided to quit...i never tried the patches, gums, or anything...i quit cold turkey...try that it just might...and will power and determination to quit...when you get a nicotine craving put some gum or something in your mouth
Hmmm I-d been a smoker for 10 years and when I decided I needed to give up, I did just that. For some reason I never got cravings, or the bad sweating or aggitated. I never tried gum or patches so I would say the best thing to do would be to go cold turkey, because the faster the nicotine is out your body. the better. With patches and gum you-re just replacing fags with something else addictive.

This answer probably doesn-t help much, but give going cold turkey a try. It-ll be tough, but just keep saying to yourself it-ll be worth it. It can take up to a week for nicotine to leave your body, so detox with cranberry juice and lots of water and hopefully you shouldn-t crave too much... if at all.

hope that helps.
Do the gum and after the gum put a lolly pop in, it worked for men or go for a walk to burn off the energy if you can.

hi rooster..

clean from nicotine 5 years, after 40 years of smoking..i could not have quit without a support group.. god knows i tried enough times.. i am a member of nicotine anonymous, ad attend meetings both locally and on line.. on line meetings are as close as your computer..however you decide to quit good luck there is simply no wrong to quit!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine
My wife tried for years by throwing out her cigarettes and all we had to do was stop and buy more. She couldn-t quit until she was ready. When she made up her mind she put her pack of smokes in the freezer so she wouldn-t panic for not having cigarettes handy, and she just stopped smoking and never took another puff. You have to put hour mind to it.
I think this is one of your best decisions. You must know what are the advantages of quitting:

This will keep you motivated throughout. My friend was chain smoker and he quit. He use to say, just be mentally strong and you can do it. Here are some tips that helped him:

it is a matter of will - focus your will on it and it-s easy. Just say to yourself: I despise smoking, I hate the smell and dislike the taste.

Or you can look at it like Earnest Hemingway who said: its easy to quit smoking, I did it hundreds of times :-))

My 16 year old female friend wont quit smoking, Natalie Poxlightner is going to die, what do I do? -

leave her. u cant do any thing. if u can do any thing-you may do earlerly-. so just leave her dont get excitment
If she won-t there really isn-t a way to make her. It-s all in her head so she-s the only one that needs to make that decision. All you can do is help her make that decision by showing her nasty photos of people who smoke. But there is a risk of pushing her away if you constantly bother her! Btw who is Natalie Poxlightner?
Has the doctor told Natalie Poxlightner that she has a terminal illness? I don-t like to see people smoking but not everyone who smokes dies of lung cancer or emphysema.

I think you have more of a problem trying to control your friend-s smoking than she does. MYOB
Agree, you mind your own business. And everyone is going to die. But no 16-year-old ever died of smoking cigarettes. It takes many, many years for smoking to kill you, and even then, it isn-t a sure thing. So stop worrying about your friend. She has years in which to stop.
Just tell her smokings bad for her, if she doesn-t care then leave it and try to get on with your own life. If she does listen then help her if she wants to quit.
why not show her some pictures of lungs, hearts, etc. which were damaged because of smoking. she may be afraid of those pictures, why not just try....
You are overreacting. A 16 year old who smokes has at least 50 years to live, and probably longer. Don-t worry about her. Relax and enjoy your friendship.
i got permission to take my 16yo son to the cancer ward at our local hospital it made him sick.now he volunteers there and smokes no more
Simple: You mind your own business, and focus on your own faults and vices.
let her smoke. its not your life.
