(cont.) back. My lungs are full of crud and make it hard to breath, or will I get the elasticity back?
First of all, congratulations on quitting! That is a huge first step, and you will be happy to know that there are TONS of health benefits to doing so. Here are some of them (the time indicates what happens this long after quitting!)

20 minuted = Blood pressure drops, temperature normalizes
8 hours =carbon monoxide levels drop to normal
2 weeks= Circulation improves, heart attack risk decreases
3 months = 30% increase in lung function
9 months = Cough, congestion, fatigue, shortness of breath and risk of infections decreases

1 year = Chance of heart attack cut in half
5 years = Stroke and cervical cancer risk almost that of non-smoker

10 years= Lung and larynx cancer risk cut in half
15 years= Heart attack almost that of a non-smoker
20 years= Oral cancer risk that of a never-smoker

As you can see, there are great benefits to quitting, so keep up the good work! I would recommend that you go see your doctor to let them know the progress you have made and see if anything is wrong (why you are having trouble breathing). Also, try to encourage others to go down the same path as you!

your gonna gain a crap ton of weight
I think thats the best way to do it, I have been smokefree after 10 years of smoking. I quit cold turkey 3 months ago. Though it-s more difficult in the beginning but from what I read, the success rate of staying quit is highest for cold turkey quit. I would suggest you to do deep breathing excercises when I feel a strong urge to fall back ... good luck and stay healthy

I also want to know if quiting will help clear up my face? Dumb question, but i think it might, if i can get my body running on vitamins instead of nicotine. I think the smoking is messing up my hormones.
Quit smoking, then get on a proper diet and exercise routine. Join a gym and get training sessions. Most people use gaining weight as an excuse not to quit. It really doesn-t hold a lot of water... if you quit smoking and eat right and exercise, your body will be more efficient at losing weight.

start working out( jogging ,walking, jumpping, running, biking, kick boxing and more) eat healthy no junk food and no sodas, drink plenty of water

Congrats on your attempt to quit. It is a tough road but do-able with enough will power, and a huge benefit to your health and well being. I quit 10 years ago, and it isn-t easy. Some will power and a day to day committment will help you. You have a definite concern regarding the weight gain. Not all people gain, but most, especially women do if they do not alter their lifestyle. For one thing, you will taste foods better, so will eat more and possibly things not too healthy to maintain your weight. You must start now to carefully watch what you eat. Seriously. Also, your metabolism will take a downturn for a short while, but if you incorporate some daily exercise, as brisk walking, or something other that will raise and maintain your heartrate for 30 minutes, you will do just fine. Buy yourself some sugarless gum or sugarless mints, or candy and keep them all at hand. If you make sure that your daily food intake is a healthy mixture of things necessary to maintain a good metabolic movement, your chances of success in stopping smoking for good, and keeping fat off will be excellent. And good luck!
Let me tell you, I have recently quit and it has been worth it. Yes I have gained a bit of weight but it-s nothing I can-t work off in a couple of months. I have put on an additional 10 pounds and my size 6 pants don-t fit anymore. So what, the money I-m not spending on smokes, I am going to spend on new clothes. I don-t smell like smoke any more. My clothes house and car don-t smell anymore. It is a wonderful feeling. And I kicked the habit without any -stop smoking aids.- Just plain old willpower.

Good Luck and it is sssooooooo worth it.
Quit smoking 1 pack a day and put on a lot of weight. The first couple to weeks I always had some type of food in my mouth.

I stopped smoking on 9-19-06, so now I am exercising and eating better to drop the weight which is now dropping quickly that the side effects of smoking has decreased.

Best of luck !

If you put on weight, don-t keep it, start exercising right away and try to eat healthy as you go through withdrawal which is hard to do.
Hon---I quit 2 years ago, after 27 years of smoking 2-3 packs of KOOLs a day.
And YES, I gained weight, but I lost it when the addiction was gone...
And my doc said he preferred the weight gain to the cigarettes!!!!

You can do it--but it is HARD!!! You have to be very determined to quit.
Get a piece of paper. On one side, list all the benefits of smoking. It-ll be a very short list. On the other, list the detriments. Stop at 20.

Possibly gaining weight is much less health threatening than continuing to smoke.

And yes, nicotine is messing up your skin.
People smoke because they have a addicting personality, hence being afraid of gaining waite...
Clearing up your face, if you think it will hard enough it just might...
If you are happily married get addicted to sex....everytime you want a smoke have sex. No more smoking :0)
People tend to think that the weight gain is due to pacifying the need to put something in your mouth. In other words, you substitute food for the cigarettes. This is partially responsible but actually a combination of that combined with the fact that nicotine is a stimulant. It stimulates your metabolism and when it-s gone, your metabolism slows down. My suggestion is that when you do quit smoking, chew lots of gum and start your day with at least 20 minutes of cardio-vascular exercise.
I would imagine it would help clear up your face because you would be eliminating the toxins from your system that you ingest with cigarettes. It certainly would not hurt.

Good luck!
Start a workout plan when you quit. I did, and I lost 40 pounds so far.

I am a longtime smoker and have just quit.I am using the Patch.What tricks did you learn to help you become a non-smoker?

Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
New research shows that green tea may be very effective for people who are trying to quit smoking. In a recent study, cigarette smokers who drank up to six cups of herbal green tea a day reduced the damage by toxins by up to 50 %! That being said, someone who is either continuing to smoke or quitting cigarette smoking can absolutely benefit from drinking several cups of green tea a day. It’s also important to keep yourself well hydrated while you are quitting smoking in order to rid your body of the built-up toxins and nicotine you’ve been storing.
I quit smoking 30 years ago . cold turkey. it is all about integrity.

How long does it actually take before I will feel 100 percent normal after I quit smoking? -

I have started working out really hardcore and I want to start running again, but I just quit 2 days ago and still feel severe pain in my chest. I know I need to give it awhile but how long can you predict?
It takes about a week to get rid of the addiction, 3-4 wks before you feel completely normal really. And it takes about month for every year you smoked to clear your lungs completely.
The good news is you will wonder why you *ever* liked it. The bad news is that after 12 yrs I still have an occasional craving - although they are usually brief and over with quickly.
Don-t get discouraged - that first month is definately the hardest, but it can be done. Chew cinnamon gum whenever you get a bad craving - it sort of changes your mind to associate a craving with cinnamon gum :)
I heard on one of the fat movies that it takes three days for you body to adjust to quitting smoking and a few weeks to get over it psychologically.
It-s all psychological. It-s in your head. The key is to forget about smoking and keep this message in your head: Quit or die.
With me, I felt lots better after about two weeks and after six weeks, I felt great. Stick with it and good luck!

Good for you. I quit 11 years ago and still crave when i am stressed out. I pretend to take a drag off an air cigarette, it helps. Gain weight, loose weight until your metabolism can balance out, just eat healthy.

Quit smoking!? -

My friend just caught her 10 year old sister smoking cigs!
her sister has been hanging out wit older boys that r about 13-14 and they smoke cigs so she did it too.
she hung out wit them cuz nobody likes her for sum reason.
my friend asked her how often she smoked and she said everyday she would smoke 1-2 packs.
she cant quit smoking and its horrible.
how can i help my friends sister?
i just feel so bad cuz shes so young.
You really have to tell an adult. They can help get the right things to help her stop.
It is not that unusual for a 10 y/o to smoke. But I seriously doubt she really smokes 1-2 ppd without her parents buying them for her. I think that is the amount she would like to smoke, not how much she really smokes.

I doubt if you can help her. Her parents should be the ones to try, but if she likes smoking that much, she will probably continue. A better approach might be for her parents to let her smoke at home and get her away from bad influences.
Hello,

It is good to hear that you want her to quit! I personally found the guide offered at
http://www.stoppingsmokingtips.net
to be very helpful when I quit smoking. Good luck to you!
This worked for me it-s a little weird something subliminal but it was free so just tried it and it worked amazingly.

get it here: http://www.quitsmokingin3minutes.com

as i said its free so what do you have to lose?
Mel
A lot of people start young. Really do anything you can to get her to stop, because it gets much harder to quit as the days go on.
um well you could show her what it does to your body or like if she doesn-t smoke for 2 hours or something your friend will buy her a chocolate bar or 1 day a new CD briding works
Please encourage your friend to stop. My mother started around her age - finally stopped at 60 years old.

Today my mom has COPD. She lives off an oxygen tank. Not attractive at all.
Opinion A... TELL AN ADULT... and they will be able to help with the situation...

Opinion B... Tell her why smoking is bad for her and that she needs to stop or you will tell an adult...
Show her how unattractive it is. There are also some videos on Youtube you could watch. Some are kinda gross.
well because shes so young tell an adult! thats not good.

Do you think there is a good reason for heavy smokers to quit smoking? -

Do you think there is a good reason for heavy smokers to quit smoking? -

not only is the smoker harming his/her self they are harming others all around them.
It has been 47 years since the world ws shocked by medical research which proved that lung cancer was definitely caused by smoking tobacco. Heavy smokers, by the way, are not at all aware of lung cancer and -understandably-
consider that the puff of a ciggie is worth the risk.
After all, we are all, each and every one of us, in a position of getting killed in many, many varied and different accidental situations. Young smokers have no idea of death or illnesses. Fair enough. Old smokers have reached a realisation too, too late. Stiff sh*t.
My grandfather has been smoking heavily (2-3 packs a day non filter) for 90 years...yes, you read that right 90 years. He turned 103 years old last Dec. He had never been sick except for an occasional cold. The only time he was hospitalized was due to a drunk driver running a red light and T-boned his car. His Doctor told me he has the lungs of a 30y/o. I do not smoke, but have been around smokers all my life and have never had any respiratory problems. To answer your question, it should be the individuals right to choose to quit smoking, if they feel they have reasons to quit they should quit.
would you rather die or live??
life itself is a good reson to quit smoking
even though it may not always be the best of times but its all worth it in the end
YES!

LIFE!
There is never a bad reason for quitting.
Yes it gave me Cancer but I-m sort of ok. GIVE UP NOW!
I can. Being able to breathe.

Quit Smoking.? -

Any simple and effective ways?
I quit 4 years ago using the patch. And I was smoking 4 packs a day. Each patch last 3 days even though it says to take them off and reapply every 24 hours. So i managed to get 6 weeks worth with 2 weeks worth of patches. I bought 21mg and 14mg. Believe me, leave on for 3 days each. And you will NOT have any urge to smoke while on the patch. Now I was able to go cold turkey after 6 weeks. I still got urges but they were weak ones.....easy to pass. Thats my story.

http://www.stop-smoking-tips.com/

When I quit Smoking back in 86 everyone i knew
or worked around smoked, My wife, family just
about everybody. The only way I was able to quit
was when I took a week off from work, went to
a motel, lock myself in, and sweated it out. I Lived
on orange juice - aspirin for a week, but I did it.
In my opinion don-t bother with any medications or such you will become reliant on them to stay away from smoking the best way is to be positive and exercise your will power to refrain from getting back to smoking.

Quit and start focusing on all the benefits of quitting smoking and leading a healthier lifestyle, just my opinion.

This is a site with some good information to help you out
Ask your doctor to put you on Welbutrin or Cialis. Me, my friend and her husband all took Welbutrin and quit. After the first week or so cigarettes don-t taste the same, they taste yucky, so you really don-t want to do it anymore. The hardest thing for me was in the car, so it took a little longer for me than my friends, but I haven-t had a cigarette in 12 days and don-t want one. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!
There is no simple way.
I have at one time, smoked 60 a day.
I decided to give up when I realised how much money was going up in smoke and going into other people-s pockets, you can buy a car with the money you save?
First I carried an unopened packet on me.
You will find that as you go with out a smoke in the early part. The temptation is easier to resist, if you tell yourself that you are not going to let a little bit of tobacco push you around.
You will find that as the time between the urge to smoke gets longer, the urge will get more intense until the 18th day when the worst will be over. If you do give in to the temptation?
Do not give up because if you give up the smoking, you will be a stronger person for it.
If you are in a group of smoker and they offer you a smoke decline by saying no thank you. you may find that some one will deliberately tempt you, but any weak person will give in.
It takes a very strong and smart person to say NO and not give in GOOD LUCK.

I really want to quit smoking but I can-t I heard it-s easier to quit if you have a partner... well I don-t know any smokers around me so I want to find partner for quitting in here!!
Good for you. If you struggle cold turkey, i suggest you try this nicotine delivery product called the electronic cigarette.

If you haven-t heard of it, its not a tobacco product. It does not carry the harmful chemicals and carcinogens that traditional cigarettes have. You do not light it up so theres no carbon monoxide. You can smoke it anywhere as there-s no risk of passive smoking or unpleasant odours.

It produces -smoke- in the form of vapour which replicates the look and feel of smoking. In fact, it does not differ to nicotine replacement patches. The main components is water and nicotine, so it doesnt cause cancer.

I got mine on ebay, you just buy the starter kit and then change the cartridges for $2 each. Have a look, it might help you

Cheers
Hey Fred, don-t worry about quitting smoking...it-s easy! I-ve quit a hundred times....nothing to it. I-d help you but I have tomorrow off and a good book to read so, as you know, you can-t really enjoy a good book without smoking.
why tomorrow? sorry but i started quitting last week, im now experiencing coughing due to withdrawal syndrome, trust me, u can do it by your own,,,,,anyway, just go go go, nice decision!
I-d love to help you... but I-d have to START smoking first before I could quit.

Good luck.
ill quit with you next week!

If you have quit smoking with the nicoderm patch, do you find that the patch is extremely itchy? -

If you have quit smoking with the nicoderm patch, do you find that the patch is extremely itchy? -

and makes ur arm feel kind of numb?
It is kind of weird, but since the patch is putting nicotine into your blood stream through your skin, it-s bound to feel a little weird. However, mild irritation is okay, but if your arm starts to swell or get too red, you should probably talk to a doctor about it. Either way, good luck with quitting!

I quit smoking cigarettes and i have a tightness in my chest and i feel really weak also what should i do? -

im 18 and ive been chain smoking for 3 years....
Yes, I also have the same chest tightness after quitting smoking 3 months ago. Sometimes it hurts breathing, but don-t give up the quitting. It will get easier as our lungs cleaning up the junk that deposited in there after years of smoking. Hang in there, we are on the same boat. It will get better!

Good Luck!!
Physical withdrawal from nicotine is temporary, but it can be uncomfortable while it lasts. -Quitter-s flu- is a term used to describe this phase of smoking cessation because nicotine withdrawal symptoms often mimic a cold or a mild case of the flu. Understanding what to expect when you quit smoking and following the tips provided here for coping will help you move through this stage more easily.
Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms

* Cravings to smoke
* Irritable, cranky
* Insomnia
* Fatigue
* Inability to Concentrate
* Headache
* Cough
* Sore throat
* Constipation, gas, stomach pain
* Dry mouth
* Sore tongue and/or gums
* Postnasal drip
* Tightness in the chest
It gets worse before it gets better. That-s your lungs clearing up all that other stuff that-s not supposed to be in there that comes up when you-re smoking. After one week you can probably do some jumping jacks or something. Just eat and drink a lot of food. And you will be fine. And don-t smoke one more because if you do you will never quit.

What are some allergic reactions you can get when you quit smoking? -

My mom smokes a lot and now she has -decided- to quit. But I want to know if there are any reactions she can get from it. For example she has been smoking 38 years and now she decided to quit. She used to smoke 2 boxes a day but then started smoking one a day and now none.
She will feel better for a few months, then her lungs will want to clear up so she will probably have coughs to release phlem and maybe even get sick as her immune system trys to regenerate parts of her body. She may have nicotine withdrawls, but she has to stay strong. But after the sickness and phlem and headaches pass, should be smooth sailing after that.

What happens after you quit smoking:

* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.

* In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.

* In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.

* In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.

* In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.

* In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems
will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.

* In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.

* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.

* In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

Best of luck to her. I have 6 weeks of cold turkey under my lungs now and still going strong.

I quit smoking marijunna for 8 days now is this a normal withdraw effect? -

Since i stop smoking now during the day only it seems i start to feel dizzy like im gonna pass out but i dont, this started after day 3 from not smoking, i have been a heavy daily smoker for 10 yrs, im only 25 and i going to see the doctor to make sure nothing else is wrong but i wanted to know if this is a normal withdraw effect from not smoking?THANKS
it would be safe just to go to the doctors any ways. i never heard of that.
More than likely one is the result of the other but in my experience of quiting no i did not suffer any withdrawal, but i wouldnt worry too much your system has to readjust and this will not take too long.... in other words dont panic take it easy.
Yes it is - and may I say:- -Well done you- for taking this very good decision, I wish you all the luck in the world.
If it sets your mind at rest by all means go and have a check up with the doctor.

I quit smoking a month ago. why am i breaking out!? -

seriously. i didn-t think i was a vein person until i quit smoking gained weight and broke out. my friends said im detoxing, if that is so why just on my face. i quit smoking to be healthy now im just self conscience and depressed as hell. i feel fat and ugly. wasn-t worth quiting in my book but im too stubborn to go back to smoking. this sucks.
The weight gained isn-t from the lack of nicotine, it-s from the extra eating you-re doing to keep your hands moving to your mouth (it-s like replacing one bad habit with another). The acne could be from the extra chocolate or sugar you-re ingesting as well.

Cut out the -non-smoking snacking- and you-re problem should subside.
after a month you will still be experiencing withdrawal and it will be your mind lying to you to be depressed and feel fat etc...hang in there ...the end result will be worth it....

Medroxyprogesterone-if I quit smoking right before I take the first dose-will this lower risk of blood clots? -

I have just been prescribed medroxyprogesterone to jump start ovulation since it has not happened for almost 4 months now.
I am not pregnant. I have taken many blood tests which showed up normal. (FSH,LH, Thyroid and Prolactin). I had an ultrasound and it was revealed to me that I have a cyst on my right ovary. I have not had a period for 4 months.
I am 25 yrs old and have been smoking on and off for around 6 years.
The warning for taking medroxyprogesterone is that in some occasions, serious side effects were blood clots (in the lungs as well as the legs, etc) and smokers have a higher risk of blood clots from taking this medicine.
I have been prescribed medroxyprogesterone 10mg to take 1 once a day for 10 days.
My question is:

If I quit smoking the day before I take my first pill and all the way throughout the treatment, which is 10 days long. Will it lower my risk of having a blood clot, or does the risk stay the same since I have already been smoking for 6 years?
Your not going to be able to stop in 1 day.
