I am 24 and have been smoking since I was 18... I have tried to quit with patches (but still smoked) i think it is mainly the habit. I quit for 3 months cus i had ,to but started agian. I recently went on a date with a non smoker and found i didn-t think aboutsmoking at all till i got home ( and we even ate ) so what is the best (and most affordable ) way to quit?
be with your non smoker date during your waking hours. i can see that he-s your medicine.
Do the following, i am serious. Go to a CVS or Walgreens and get the following

1 Large bag of tootsie pops
1 Large bag of charms blow pops
1 Bottle of Nyquil
4 Packs of Gum

If you can take off work or take off time from school it will really help.

Stay up really late, until you cant see straight. Smoke your last cigarette.

Take a normal dose of nyquil, and try to sleep for as long as possible, longer the better.

When you get up, start sucking the charms. Eat them nonstop. Remember to brush your teeth, cause its alot of sugar.

Stay in bed, and dont get dressed. As soon as you feel tired, try to go to bed. If you are up, the only thing you should be doing is focusing on sucking the charms or tootsie pops. What this is doing is taking care of the oral fixation on cigarettes.

Keep the pops white stick between your fingers as you would a cigarette.

Once u go 48 hours, the nicoteine is out of your system. From this point on it is all mental

Stash charm blow pops and tootsie pops everywhere you go, esp near places your formally smoked

i keep them in car glove box, near shower, in pockets, in dressers, in kitchen cabinets, etc. more places the better.

When u have an urge to smoke, just go through like 2 or 3 pops straight. It will take care of the mental craving.

Then taper yourself off the pops.

I am smoking since last 30 years and finally gave up. Well gave up reading about bad effects of smoking never gave up smoking.
Here-s what I did: I had smoked off and on since I was 13 yoa. At age 45, I began by brushing my teeth and tongue after every cigarette no matter where I was or what time of day. So I found something to do to occupy my time and distract myself so I wouldn-t focus on the mental urge. That worked too, and now after seven years I no longer have the mental urges either.

Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.

I have terrible will power, but I would like to quit. It-s harder cause all my friends smoke, so I-m surrounded by it. Anyone have any tips on quitting.
go out one night where its very smokey! go home at put these clothes in a carrier bag or bin liner and close it...then in a couple of weeks when you really want one go open the bag and sniff! You wont wanna smoke again! :)
macular degeneration.....you lose your eyesight....smoking is a major cause of this....also lung cancer...if you get it you should go and arrange your funeral....is that enough reason to quit.....

The Lord told me, -3 deep breaths- and it worked. Whe you feel the urge, take a deep breath filling your whole chest then slowly let it out, then another, then the third. After 3 you will be kinda light headed. Our bodys are not used to this much straight oxagen at one time. It seems to really do the trick. I also cut straws, cigarette length and had one everywhere, in my car, next to the computer, in my purse, in my pocket, even in the bathroom. The girth is the same as a cigarette and you can finger it as a prop. If you forget - draw, it-s only air. God helped me, so I-ll help you.

What does a sore throat due to quitting smoking feel like? -


I have stopped smoking going on my 5th day. For the last 3 days I have had a terrible sore throat. I read that a sore throat is a sympton of quitting, but how bad is it? My throat hurts so bad at times, I can not swallow. I just want to make sure it is part of the Quitters Flu, and not something I need to go to the DR for. (My throat is also very swollen and red).

I quit smoking with Chantix - am on day 15. I have got the sore throat - phlegmy type sinus problem, but my doctor did tell me to expect this and it would slowly go away. My daughter quit smoking 1 1/2 months ago and has the same thing. But, we didn-t have the same swollen, red throat you are describing so it-s probably time for a trip to the doctors.

I have just recently quit smoking and I am starting to notice that this congestion is really starting to bother me. I was wondering what the best way to get rid of it was or how I can facilitate my body fight to get rid of it.
Drink lots of water. I quit 7 years ago and I had the same thing. Your body is trying to shed the dead cells in your lungs and get rid of the mucus in there. Cough, cough and know your on your way to a healthier life. You could take some drugs Im sure but why trade one vice for another?

drink lots of water, dont smoke again or you will start smoking again, it should last about 2 weeks you will feel better soon, stick with it, i know its hard but it will make you healthier and will give you a self esteem boost when you have finished going through the quitting symptoms. you may also get sores in your mouth, it is a side effect of your mouth healing. for other side effects go to a site called stopsmokingcenter.net or something like that it deffinately is -------center.NET, it is a lot of work but will keep your fingers busy so you wont have time to smoke, there is a lot of reading and question answering that will be beneficial to you and a network of quitters that you can talk to who are going through the same things. i just quit smoking beginig of anuary. i just quit cold turkey. now im starting to get cravings again, is this normal?
Very normal hang in there it will be worth it. I quit smoking, Meth, Ecstacy, Ketamine, LSD, and a world of other upper downer teasers and screamers. Smoking was the last to go because well its pretty socially accepted. If it gets to be too much for you go to your doctor and get an SSRI. Its an anti-depressent that comes in many brands and forms that you are probably already familiar with (Wellbutrin, Zoloft, ect.) Good luck and keep thinking how much better food taste and the renewed sense of smell.
yea it is i stopped by taking commit lozenge and after awhile i stopped because i didn-t need it and i started up again... currently im taking wellbutrin and its working really well

Yes, I quit 20 years ago and still have cravings. I learned tai chi and chi gong. this helped me control my addiction. Of course I turned to sweets and coffee (like the AA meetings...people stop booze, and trade it for cigs and sugar). So now I am fat and battle sugar addiction.
So, it all boils down to conquering your addiction (to whatever you may ve addicted) and transferring your energies to a higher level. It is about reformulating your life to reduce stress and achieve your bliss. Good luck on your path.

I think cold turkey is the way to go. If you can get through the critical stage with cold turkey, you are on your way to becoming a non-smoker.

Don-t. You sound like the typical brainwashed person who just assumes that because they tell you at school that weed is bad, you believe them. Weed is far less dangerous than ciggs or alcohol. Not telling you that you hafta start smoking, but give him his right to smoke. First of all, weed isn-t addictive. I smoke every single day and if for what ever reason i can-t smoke (ex: family vacation, out of weed, at a friends house who doesn-t smoke) i never get withdrawl symptoms. Addiction is a chemical dependance for a substance. Also, it doesn-t cause lung cancer. 99.9% of people who got lung cancer and smoke weed also smoke ciggs. It doesn-t make you irresponsible. When someone is high, they don-t wanna be violent and go rob a store, you just wanna sit and chill, watch a funny movie, or just have a nice conversation with a friend. I-m actually a better driver when I-m stoned. It makes you more alert, and contraryy to popular belief actually increases motor skills. just talk to him try and make him realize the harm that the drug does to him. If that doesn-t work try to go to the counsellor at school and ask how to help your friend you are not required to give out his name or anything about him. Don-t give up trying to help

Good luck, without HIM buying into to it than there is not much you can do. Unless you are willing to lose a friend, you could try an intervention with his parents, friends, etc.... It will either work or backfire, one way or another there will be a reaction. It comes down to a personal choice, he has to want to quit in order to quit.
I mean you really cant make him stop, all you can do is talk to him. Eventually he-sgoing to get caught so, you need to let him know that. An maybe you should ask whats more important your friendship or the drugs.
Give him some cocaine.
he needs to want to quit himself. if he doesn-t want to quit he won-t and no one can force him. You can intervene and hope he has enough sense to know he should and want to stop but until he admits he has a problem, he ain-t changing.
Talk to him about it. Tell him how you feel and how it makes you feel.. Get some of his other friends to talk to him about it. Does he do it every day several times a day. He may have some depression issues going on. If he does it once in awhile I wouldn-t really worry about it, but if it is every day you definetly want to talk to him about it.

Don-t worry about telling how it will harm him and all that crap. Focus on it bothering you. He will make excuses for any fact you bring up on it being harmful. I am afraid this is not going to be a one conversation thing either. He won-t just up and quit.

my mom has been smoking since she was 13. and now shes getting worse, she smokes 2 packs everyday, and its like she gets so insane about, if se only has one pack on her, shell flip out and run to get 5 more. i talk to her about it, alot of people have tried, but she gets mad and changes the subject, she wont try ANYTHING to stop nothing at all and she gets REALLY pissed when people try and help her. i dont know hwat to do.
I-m sorry to hear about your Mom and it sounds like you really care and love your mother dearly. Unfortunately, smoking is an addiction and unless she wants to stop smoking, no one can help and/or make her stop.

I wish I could grant you a wish and everything would be alright but I-m no genie. Just love your mom and pray for a miracle that something will make her want to quit.

Very tuff. Nicotine is really one of the most addictive chemicals, and the tobacco companies have made sure that you become addicted fast!!!

There are lots of things out there that really work, patches, support groups, some new meds. I think the thing that helped me the most was to sit across from a colleague and watch her as he became out of breath every time she laughed. And the sound of mucus bubbling in her lungs too.... and I thought to myself, OMG, that could be me in 30 years. I found every piece of photography I could that was showing what smoking did to my lungs....EVERYTHING!!!

Some of the things I used: No coffee in the morning, when a cig. was really great, brushed my teeth as soon as I ate, no wine, cuz cigs are great with wine, and I kept the image of that lady in my mind. I also out of curiosity went to one of the hospitals and asked to see a cancerous lung after a surgery where it was removed. (If you have a friend who is a nurse, maybe she can get you in).

I was truly a dedicated smoker... had 7 smoked before I even got out of bed in the morning, and smoked 3 packs a day. Sweetie, if I can do it, you can too.

my advise is you must create a new hobby.
Congratulations for making the decision! I treat smokers and for the majority smoking is an addiction, which is not recognised by mainstream -quit smoking- methods. Firstly note that it is NOT a nicotine addiction! Don-t waste your money on NRT. Secondly, the habit is easily knocked over by steadfast intention because it was created by repetition and the setting up of a -trigger-! Ultimately it is your unconscious mind belief system being triggered, possibly by a chemical in the cigarette such as chocolate or cinnamon. Or from a deep memory of someone you idolised as a child, and seeing them smoke at the age you now are. Do a search on the name Peter Zapfella.

Wean yourself off of them (ie 10 today, 9 tomorrow, 8 the next day and so on).

get a doctor to prescribe you wellbutrin or zyban. you might not like the way the pills make you feel the first couple of days, but you-ll get used to it.

after 2 weeks on the pills, add the patch (buy the biggest ones only), and stop smoking. the first 2 days might be really hard, but get through it, and it-ll get better after the 2nd day.

after about a week wear only 2/3 of the patch, then another week, go down to 1/3 of the original patch size. one week later, ditch the patches. continue on the meds for another 2 weeks.

use nicorette if you still get nic fits.

I quit 33 years ago and never went back. I had a sore throat and took one draw from a cigarette. It hurt like hell. I thought to myself, What Am I Doing? I-m not sure about injections, but I can let you know what worked for me. Zyban for 2 weeks, and then I stopped smoking. To curb the physical withdrawal, I used the patch in addition to the Zyban after I stopped smoking cigarettes.

In addition, if there are any other smokers in your house, it helps to have them quit at the same time. It-s much harder to quit if someone is still smoking in front of you. After that last cigarette, I never looked back, and it-s been over 6 years now. And I was a hardcore smoker (2 packs a day, easy). If I can do it, so can you! :)
Scott, I would suggest acupuncture. Try AIAM (American Institute of Alternative Medicine) @ www.aiam.edu or 614-825-6255. I believe that OSU East has a smoking cessation clinic that might help you, if you-re truly ready to quit.
I wouldn-t recommend any type of injection to quit smoking. Have you tried acupuncture or hypnosis? As far as I-ve heard, the urge to smoke never really goes away ... even years later. Ex-smokers have told me that the biggest thing they miss about the habit is their after-dinner cigarette. It seems to be more of a matter of being ready to quit and just not lighting another one (tough to do on a free will planet!). Until you reach that point, I don-t believe there-s any therapy that will really work well for you.

This is going to sound dumb (I-ve been accused of worse, believe me!) -

1) Make up your mind to quit.

2) Make up a list of places, times that you smoke (After meals, after having a brewski, driving home from work, etc.).

3) Quit BUT,

4) Simultaneously, avoid those places and times at 2), above.

Take walks, eat at different times, lay off the beer for a while - you will be surprised but it won-t take long to shake it.

BUT YOU HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT!!!!!!

I was the biggest smoker ever. I used nicoteen patches and that really helped me give up
HA! My husband and I were just discussing this. (He needs to quit.) Some of our ideas:

Don-t buy them. (This isn-t as easy as it sounds, apparently.)

Chew gum.

Chew on sunflower seeds. (This gets messy, as the shells need to be spit out.)

Keep your eye on the prize....If you smoke $4 worth of cigs per day, you-d have $120 at the end of the month for something. What is it you REALLY, REALLY want that you need to save for?

It takes willpower, and it is not very easy. I would recommend looking up the long-term effects of smoking (with pictures) to definitely remind you of the fact that you are slowly killing yourself.

I found it the hard way, I mean, I was cutting it to 3-5 to 7 when drinking,but when I found out my cataract needs surgery and my smoking might have hasten it (33yrs smoking) well I told my Doc I would give it up. It-s been a month now since I smoke, I smell good again as per my wife.
There are chewing gums 2mg and 4mg nocitine Nulife brand.Put in the mouth and allow to remain for about an hour, then just one bite and another, more bite and it lasts for full day.The nicotine content kills the urge to smoke.Slowly you keep reducing it and in a months time, you dont need them.You finally quit.

I would say the best way to quit smoking is to just resist it..i know its hard...you could exercise, run around, or just throw the junk away...try your best and you-ll quit...

divert ur attention to sumthng else ......thnk dat u shouldn-t smoke ....whenever u feel like smoking try eating or drinking sumthng ..i thnk dat should help
I would try meditation and chantix
while u feel to smoke, u jsut get busy schedule n forget that, or have something instead of cigriattes
Reduce the number of cigrts daily and grdually bring it to zero.
Buy ELECTRONIC cigarette from any medical shop

Most people don-t have the sheer willpower to quit cold turkey. So for them it-s pretty much a choice beetween the gum or patches. I think the patch is the better of those two choices. You wear it all day, and you get sick if you smoke while you wear it. It removes the physical cravings and it just becomes a matter of your mental addiction. Plus, wearing a patch when you go to bed gives you very intense and vivid dreams. You go through 3 steps gradually taking your nicotine levels lower. By the time you-re done, going about your day with no patch and no smokes isn-t a problem.

The only way that worked for me was to go to a group hypnosis seminar. I quit April 29, 2005 using that method. One thing you have to remember is that no matter what method you use, YOU HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT!!!! Even the hypnotist said the same thing. Nothing will work until this happens.

Everytime you go to light up, think of ALL those CHILDREN who have, and have DIED from Cancer. Think of what they-re lives are like....the PAIN and SUFFERING they-re going through. That was enough for me.

Nicorette gum and/or nicorette?? patches. They have nicotine in them. When I stopped smoking though, I really wanted to stop. Also, I bought big bags of M-M-s and Jolly Ranchers and whenever I wanted a smoke, I would munch on candy. I turned into a candyholic for a couple of weeks replacing one habit with another.
cold turkey. Dad used to smoke, drink 6 cups of coffee a day, one day he felt something was wrong, came home took his b.p. it really wasn-t high, but high for him.He went to see the doctor and was told he had light high b.p. (I mean it wasn-t sky rocketing), adnormal pulse rate. Doctor told him to loose weight, cut down on caffiene and most importantly, quit smoking. He did quit his coffee (but he drinks his Diet RC in place of it) and has quit smoking, he hasn-t lost that much weight. But cold turkey is the way to stop smoking, and he says the secret to quitting smoking is: You have to want to quit-. If you don-t really want to quit,then why try? Make your mind up that you-re gonna quit, not this silly smoke 2 less each day or so, if you-re going to quit, then quit.

Opinions Vary on this one. I can only tell you what worked for me. I smoked for over 35 years started when I was 12 thanks to my brother. (different reasons for all of us).

You have to decide to do it. No one else can except you or death which if you keep smoking might be sooner then you want.

First realize this. There is absolutely no benefit to smoking period. When you smoke you stink. You hurt your body and others around you. With these things in mind then it is smart to quit.

Set a date. Make it firm in your mind. Go to bed that night certain that when you wake up you will never smoke again. Get a couple of boxes of nicotine patches and use them starting the next morning when your feet hit the ground. I had all three steps but the first step made me climb the walls so i dropped down to the next one. Get some gum and chew that sugarless if you can stand it. You might gain a few pounds but you will live long enough to get rid of them. after a month or so Food will taste 10 times better. you will have saved a small fortune and you will feel sooooo good about yourself. I did it 2 years ago this Jan 1st and never felt better.

That is the best way is to start asking questions..!
A lot of it depends on how long you-ve been smoking. Some people do have good luck with patches and gum. Others are successful with the Cold Turkey method. I myself after 25 years of smoking had to go to group hypnosis just like Smoothie was talking about. It worked quite well, only cost me $40 and if I feel the urge to light up again I can attend another session for free.
Use the patch, gum or lozenges.
Cold Turkey. You-ll be uncomfortable for three or four days, then the cravings will stop.

You have to be serious about quitting, and it will come easy. If you can make it 3 days without a cigarette, you can make it a lifetime.

The gums, patches, all that crap are useless in my opinion - they only prolong the agony of nicotine addiction.

he hasn-t done it a lot for the past few years. he-s 37 or 38 but looks like he-s in his 20s.
It is not too late. Do everything you can to help him quit! Quitting is hard and he will need to want to do it, but it will really pay off in terms of health and longevity.
If he hasn-t smoked for the past few years then it sounds like he has already quit. He-s young so it would be great if he didn-t start smoking again. He could avoid so much suffering if he-s smart enough to stay away from that habit.
Let your Dad know that it upsets you if he does smoke again.
