How did you quit smoking ? -

I smoke Capri 120 Menthol cigarettes, about a pack a day. I would like to try quitting through methods at home before going to the doctor and trying the medication route. I am 33 and quit for 6 years in December 2000, but severely stressful personal situations arose and I started again. Back then, I quit via sheer willpower, but it seems much harder to quit this time around. What method (s) did you use to finally kick the habit ?
I smoked for 40 years , 2 packs a day, I went to Wal-Mart and bought me some plastic tooth picks (white ones in a plastic case) , I carried them in my shirt pocket just like they were a pack of cigarettes and every time I wanted a smoke I would reach up to my shirt pocket and take one out and put one in my mouth and chew on it.
It helped with my nerves and it gave me something to do with my hands and I had something in my mouth to take the place of the cigarette.

I have not smoked a cigarette since.
Well, I understand perfectly! I had smoked for over twenty five years and my whole life seemed to fall apart and I turned to God and received Jesus into my life, as my saviour and Lord. Into being a christian for about a year I was really convicted that it was not right nor healthy and a bad witness. I had known it was not healthy, But I had a stupid saying about things I WANTED to do. Well if I die at least I will die happy! Garbage!
Anyway to make a long story short, the scripture came to my mind, -call on the name of the Lord, and you will be saved- so I Yelled as loud as I could . -JESUS-!! and I was
DELIVERED!. Now it did not mean that I was not tempted because the enemy of our souls -the devil- does not want us to be saved, healthy, or serving the Lord. But every time I would get an urge I would just start praising God in my heavenly language to God and it would pass, or I would pick up the bible and read some blessing out loud and it would pass. This lasted for about a couple of months off and on and then I was free. Really strange I would get the urge if someone lit a match, and I smelled the sulphur, really stupid because I never used matches to light up, I used a lighter. So I know it was the devil trying to entice me in what ever way he could, but he did not succeed no mattter what he tried to bring across my path.
The reason it is harder to quit after giving in is the devil knows what pushes your button and will create things to pressure you. I do not know if you believe this or not, but there are spiritual forces at work.
I have a friend who has quit several times and of course the same happened to him, and then he just gave up, and is still smoking and this has been over 20 years now and I saw him just the other day and he is still smoking and he does not look good. Thin, pale, yellow bad teeth, If you would care to have an article about smoking email me at my primary address, not through Yahoo please, just from your primary one. The tobacco company put in additives to make you crave them.
I have now been free for over 30 years, and simply detest the smell of them.
My Father who has now moved to heaven, about 25 years before was smoking a brand called Buckingham 3 packs a day, which are a very strong blend. He finally made up his mind to quit as everytime he lit one up he would go into fits of coughing. Well he just up and quit but then every time he would get the urge he would grab a peppermint candy, so then he gained weight. So you see there is something lacking in our systems, but he did not go back to smoking.
Now I know today that we can get help by going the natural way. I know some have tried the patch and Nicoderm, but you never hear if they are still not smoking after they said they had stopped.
I do not understand how come after 6 years free you went back. Did you still like the taste of the filthy things?

How do i get my mom to quit smoking? -

my mom smokes and it wastes a lot of money what are some things i can give her to try so she can quit
Well first of all you can-t -make- your mom do anything, she has to want to quit. You can beg and plead until you are blue in the face but it will do not good. Smokers know the heath risks involved with smoking, but it is an addiction, the same as coke or heroin, and hard to quit.

It took my Mom being told that she had Barrett-s disease to make her quit and then it still wasn-t easy. Talk to your mom and explain your fears, and ask if she would be willing to try.

My mom went on a antidepressant, and patches to stop.

Good Luck
I have the same problem. My mom smokes and I can-t stand it. She started when she was 16. She wasn-t addicted then, but she would smoke every weekend. Then about 4 or 5 years ago, she started smoking again and now she-s totally addicted and I swear she does not want to stop. So I started smoking just to get her annoyed, because she is being a hypocrite and telling me not to. So whenever she tells me to stop smoking, I just respond, -I will when you do.- I hope it will get to her eventually. And I know it-s not the best way to try to get her to stop, but she-s tried nicotine gum and prescribed pills, but she just won-t take them.
And I-m not addicted to smoking.
Put together some pictures of people that have experienced operations, due to cancer caused illnesses, from smoking.

Had a supervisor who smoked 3 paks a day. Developed cancer in the roof of his mouth and had it operated on and recovered in the cancer ward of a state hospital. After seeing the other people there with teeth missing, parts of lips, gums and jaws missing - he stopped smoking and his wife did also.

Tell her you love her and do not want this to happen to her.
Possibly the Allen Carr -Easy Way to Stop Smoking- DVD. If she watched it, it would point out how she-s been conned on a grand scale.
The thing is a person has got to want to quit smoking to do so and although it wastes money to her it doesn-t. Smoking costs much more than money and she will know this
Badgering a smoker to stop smoking very often only results in one thing, they dig their heels in further and continue to smoke.
You can-t you just have to love her as she is even though you shouldn-t stop telling her your feelings. Smoking is a powerful ediction which is magnified by the fact that its legal and socially acceptable. She has to make the decision for herself. Just make sure you don-t get caught up in second hand smoke. You have a greater chance of getting lung cancer from second hand smoke than she does from smoking. Just lead by example by respecting your own health.
blatently start smoking around the house sayintg that she leads by example. if that dont work then explain that the second hand smoke has over the years affected your health and increased the likelyhood that you get throat and lung infections (not cancer! 2nd hand smoke does not cause cancer. better than 90% of the crap in the smoke is already over this guys mum-s lungs)
Tell her you love her and by smoking, she is hurting herself and those around her (including you)...

Worked for me!

Answer mine:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

hey
just tell her to stop if she really cares about how you feel and you know blah blah blah
it didnt work on my mom
but you can try!

goodluck i know what it feels like
Until your mom decides to quit smoking, there isn-t much you can do. She is well aware that it hurts her health and wastes money.
Maybe everytime she lights up tell her - I see you-re going to put another nail in your coffin, or there you go again another cancer stick.
take some time to do some research on different ways that people stop smoking, and support her and keep her accountable all the way through!
INTERVENTION!!
hide her cigs!
Threaten to start?
slap her
tell your mom the effects that she can get by smoking:lung cancer, death, bad breath, yellow finger nails, bad teeth, wrinkles, she will smell bad,she can give cancer to loved ones, kill loved ones, she can even have a heart attack it can be severe,or minor.and tell her how endearing(precious)she is to you!and if she tries to quit support her because when your trying to accomplish something its easier to have support!GOOD LUCK!to you and your mom!

What are some methods to quit smoking? -

all personal answers are welcome, especially if successful.thanx
I wasn-t serious about it for a long time, and would use any excuse to smoke.. to quit I had to DECIDE once and for all, that it enough was enough: I was wasting money I couldn-t afford and risking my life, before I made any progress. Once I decided that I would not be a slave to it anymore, I quit cold turkey. I would say the following thing to myself: TODAY I will not smoke. I have been 100% successful and three years later, I am still not smoking.
Your own mind is stronger than any other method for stopping.
No patches, no gum, no gimmicks, don-t let anyone sucker you. You have to decide that you dont want to do it anymore and then you-ll quit. I smoked for eight years, and then bam! Iquit.

What happens to your body after you quit smoking? -

Are you talking about the withdrawal symptoms or the physiological changes that occur.

The good news is this: Stop smoking NOW and your body immediately begins to detoxify and repair itself. The longer you go without a cigarette the better you and your body will feel. I was once a smoker and I know from experience that quitting is the single most difficult thing you will ever do. So, if you are seriously contemplating it, GOOD FOR YOU!!

Withdrawal is a whole different story with weight gain, irritability, etc. Some people go -cold turkey- and do fine, others need help from an M.D. Choose whatever is best for you. :) Good Luck!!
I quit smoking once. Everything else start to stink.
I quit smoking 45 days ago and feel much better. I have gained about 10 pounds but I now feel a lot more energy so I should lose that quickly. I have noticed I wheeze a lot, I assume that is my lungs repairing themselves. I notice I smell things more and coffee now stinks where before it smelled really good. Food tastes so much better and my 2 daughters have stopped having coughs all the time. They tell me I don-t stink any more from smoke. I-ve noticed my teeth look better and my skin looks younger and more elastic already! I am excited about that. The little wrinkles around my mouth have gotten smaller.
I tried to be as honest and accurate as I could. I am 39 and smoked 2 packs of marlborro 100-s a day for about 23 years.
* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.
* In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.
* In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.
* In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.
* In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.
* In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.
* In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.
* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
* In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
It gets very unhappy with you for a while but then it gets happier than it-s ever been.

Quitting sucks!

Hi. What is the eaisest way to quit smoking, I have tried and tried and tried and tried...? -

thanks.
Perhaps you should contact the Quitline.
your doctor can give you a prescription for different medications that take away alot of the urge to smoke, good luck
The average smoker tries to quit 5 times before finally succeeding, so dont get discouraged just yet. I quit cold turkey, I found what I hated about it and just focused on that. My gpa on the other hand smoked outside for several weeks and kept all of his old cigs and the ashes in a jar with a lid, when it got full he opened the jar and let the smell ferment in the house, the smell turned him off so much he never smoked again.
i saw my doctor yesterday and he told me there was a new drug on the market that has a really high success rate. (I don-t smoke, but my mom does.)

It is called Chantrix

http://www.chantix.com

You never quit you just put smoking off day by day.
I quit in October. I quit cold turkey, one day i looked at my ashtray and couldnt believe how much money was sitting in there. I figured out how much I spent a year on cigarettes and wrote it on a notecard. I kept that notecard in my pocket and everytime i wanted a smoke I stared at that notecard and thought of the things i could do with all of that money.

Whats a sure fire way to quit smoking..understand, I have to, dont want to.? -

Joanna, I understand. I had to, I didn-t want to. Someone asked me the other day if I won the lottery would I go back to smoking? I said, Yes, because then I could afford the iron lung. Get rid of all smokes except a few and put them way up top in a cabinet. Write down all the reasons you have to quit. Write down your triggers. Where and when you liked to smoke the most, on the phone, after dinner - and plan for a substitute. I sucked on those little straws you get with your coffee? I had them by the phone. I got candy canes, they work really well. And I planned to be busy for a week. It is so very hard but if you have to, you have to. YOu have my thoughts of support heading your way.
3 simple steps

1 don-t buy fags

2 don-t put one in you mouth

3 DO NOT LIGHT IT
Start by making a face when you see them or think about them. Seriously. Make a face like you just smelt or looked at poo. Besides, people who smoke cigarettes smell awful. I used to smoke a pack of Marlboro Reds a day. Just start focusing on the negatives of smoking.

The most addicting element of smoking is the ritual of deep inhaling and exhaling. The cigarette does not truly calm down the user, it elevates the heartrate actually physically exciting the user. The user identifies -relaxing- with having a cigarette, and is actually doing a focused relaxation exercise when they take the time to smoke. Unfortunately it-s with carcinogenic smoke and not clean fresh air.

Kudos on quitting, even though you don-t want to.

Good luck
i know exactly how you feel, at least in part, because i-m supposed to quit drinking Pepsi and i flat out do not want to! it-s as simple as that. i have dental issues without the Pepsi, so i know the sugar sure isn-t helping me any... but i LOVE Pepsi! it-s SO good! i want one all the time! i want one right now, and it-s not even 9am! sheesh, i-m addicted! i even dream about drinking Pepsi, it-s really gotten out of hand! ; )

i-m not comparing drinking Pepsi to smoking cigarettes. cigarettes are obviously much worse for you. i know Pepsi will never kill me, at least not directly. i guess there-s always a chance i could get health issues based on all the sugar i get from drinking it, but Pepsi isn-t my only sugar intake, so something else could just as easily cause a sugar-related illness as the 12-24 oz. of Pepsi i drink a day. but i also know it-d make me and especially my teeth much healthier not to drink it.

i agree, you pretty much have to want to quit in order to succeed at it, i would think. i-ve never tried to quit smoking -cause i never started. my Mom-s been smoking for 30 years. she-s tried to quit a couple of times, but it never stuck. luckily, she only smokes outside. if you don-t already do so, only allow yourself to smoke outside. and if you live where it-s really cold, that might make you go out less. if you smoke a pack a day, try to only smoke 10-12 cigarettes for a few days and then try to get down from there. try simple things like that rather than just trying to go cold turkey. it would be better to just STOP, but if you really don-t want to, you-ll probably pick it back up again. at least if you cut down, that-ll show you that you CAN do it, know what i mean?

i definitely wish you luck in quitting! let us know when you do! : )

edit: wow i didn-t realized i typed that much... ; )
mark twain said: Its easy to quit smoking i have done it a 1000 times.

Control your will. Once quit - dont go back ever. Thats the key.

I had been smoking since the age of 12. I quit at the age of 25 and never went back ever since. Its been 3 years. I dont even get the urge anymore , nor was it difficult to quit.
I can tell you how i did it:

december 31st 23.50H last cigarette

january 1st no more cigarettes

As with any addiction, their is no sure fire way.

I have heard the most successful way is the -patch- combined with Wellbutrin.

But, from what I know, personally, it mostly depends on your desire to quit outweighing your desire to smoke. Plain and simple but hard.
Obviously there is no sure fire way to quit smoking but if you think you can i am sure you can. Make up your mind and never look back again i am 100% sure you will succeed.
Were you told by your doctor you had to? Need more details buddy. But don-t know, never have smoked, but have tried a puff and just not a smoker user, just coughed from it. Hate it. I think it takes a huge amount of wanting to quit and telling yourself you want to quit, then your mind starts believing it. But your body craves the nicotine, just remember, your mind is 90% stronger than your body always. It takes discipline.
There is no sure fire way to quit smoking. There is no magic pill, patch, hypnosis, or any of that. Quitting smoking will be a full time job for the first month. I smoked for 35 years and one day I just decided to quit. I went on the patches for 10 weeks and struggled the whole time. it-s been 10 months and I won-t go back to smoking but the urge NEVER goes away.

Not being cruel, but until you make up your mind to quit, then you-re pretty much doomed before you start.
Alan carrs Book - how to give up smoking the easy way (I think that is the name of it)
Whatever its called it worked for my ex hubby. he was a serious seriously heavy smoker (up to 70 ciggies a day) and when he decided he was going to quit he read the book, which he WOULDNT previously, but once he made up his mind he was going to put the cigs down, he really did it. He has NEVER relapsed, much to his credit.
It-s f***ing hard...
I used to have a plastic cigarette that worked wonders for me. It got me through the serious cravings, after dinner, first thing in the morning, when I was in the car.
It-s all about breaking habits.
However, if you don-t want to give up, you-re going to have trouble... Yiou-ve got to want to give up to succeed.
i gave up, sold my old car bnought a new one and said I-d never smoke in it. With my trusty plastic cigarette I did fine.
Sadly, I lost it and am back on them again! And I can-t find another plastic cigarette...
Will power plus every thing else you can find .....Good luck - Shine on............!

How did you do it...I need help so bad..I am 34..i have smoked since I was 13 and I want to quit but i have panick attack and generalized anxiety and it makes me REALLY need a cigarette just to cope...
have alot of sex
Hi lisa.

No lie....I have smoked for MANY years...bought a book as a joke, called -how to quit smoking the easy way-. Read it, didn-t stop smoking. A friend of mine read it, stopped smoking immediately...gave it to a friend who gave it to a friend and so on. It didn-t work for me at all....but, so far, about 10 of my friends have stopped smoking just by reading that stupid book. It may work for you as well. It is certainly an attention getter....I guess I just don-t like paying attention.
Chantix worked really well for me. Chantix and prayer. Edit: What-s with the -thumbs down- ? You asked for suggestions from someone that is experienced. I smoked 2 packs @day for 40 years and quit after many attempts with other methods by using Chantix. Ok, then go and reinvent the wheel. Why don-t you try them one per week ? Start with -Will power-; then cutting down; then cold turkey; then the patches; then Wellbutrin; then hypnosis; then the gum then..... after all of that doesn-t work - try Chantix.
Welbutrin. It-s an anti-depressant/anxiety medication, and it fights nicotine. It literally makes it impossible to enjoy a cigarette. I used to smoke, but now I can-t even smoke a single cigarette, as opposed to the 7-10 I smoked per day.
I-m not a smoker, don-t plan on being a smoker, but I-ll answer anyway...

There-s tons of help out there, believe me. Millions of others are going through what you are, talk to to your doctor. Smoking really isn-t good, at all. But never quit trying to quit!!! Don-t worry, there-s help!!!

Good luck! :)

-Matt-

Does hypnosis really help you to quit smoking? -

Does hypnosis really help you to quit smoking? -

Only a minority of people can be put into a truly hypnotic trance. For most of us, it is variable how far we can or will go into one. Perhaps it-s a defense mechanism thing - at least unconsciously, we don-t like to loose our -sense- of control. For this reason, many people opting for hypnosis as a way to quit the dreaded weed will find it won-t really work. Also, you would have to take into account other issues and their interplay on the addiction. For example, there will always be things that we eat or drink that will trigger the desire to light up. Or it might be a certain behavior, like waiting for the bus and suddenly the addiction centre of our brain is lit up like a christmas tree or like fireworks night.There-s also peer group pressure for some, especially for younger woman, thanks to the really evil publicity campaigns by cigarette companies aimed at this demographic group. Finally, addictiveness as one example of our individual differences has to be also taken into account. We-re all wired differently on that big enigma. So the answer has to be probably -no-, but it-s still worth giving it a blast if you are serious about kicking the habit.
Didn-t work for my mother-in-law.
Maybe. I gave up after 12 years 1 pack a day by reading Allan Car-s -The easy way to quit smoking-. I think anyone that really wants to give up can actually find it easy to do once they realise that we are fooled into thinking that cigarettes are more addictive than they actually are. Once a small cigarette craving sets of a smokers mind, It is almost imposable for them to stop thinking about having a cigarette until they have one, but it is their mind that is doing this not their nicotine addiction. The cravings only last about 30 seconds and aren-t even very strong. Once a smoker realises this it is easy to quit if they really want to.
Hypnosis could work seeing as most of the addiction is in peoples mind. All you would need to do is deprogram people that it is to hard to give up.
me and my BF used -Commit Lozenges- and it really works!
It didn-t work for me either. I went with my son, he started again the same day. I lasted about 3 weeks. I think you have to really be ready and really want it. It plants the idea in your mind or reinforces it. But if your not ready, really, really ready don-t think it will work. They also sold vitamins? Or something that were supposed to help with withdrawal and help flush your system of the cravings faster. They were like $300.00, I didn-t get those. They were not in my budget. Maybe they would have helped???? I don-t know. But I also lived with 2 smokers and have friends that smoke so the temptation was always in my face so to speak. Well any way good luck to you. I need a cigarette! LOL
My sister had hypnosis to quit smoking, and it didn-t work.

From what I have observed, it takes a strong will, good support, and to have as much information as possible to make the choice as to which method (ie: nicotine patch, chewing gum, reducing, cold turkey) would work for you.

My father-in-law quit when he had to stay in hospital for some time due to renal failure.

Hope that helps!
It didn-t work for me.

I just quit smoking and I would like to flush out my body of toxins? Besides drinking water, what can I eat? -

Try eating foods high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help to remove free radicals from the body. (The toxins from smoke would be free radicals.)

Blueberries have higher concentrations of antioxidants than anything else. Other Berries, broccoli, tomatoes, red grapes, garlic, spinach, tea, carrots, soy and whole grains are also full of antioxidants.

Also try to find acai (pronounced ah-sa-ee) berry juice or pomegranate juice.

Look for the acai juice at Whole Foods.
Detoxing is a long project of focus. First step is to eat only vegitables for about 3 weeks with lots of garlic and hot spices. While doing this drink lots of apple juice. Unrefined apple juice.

After doing this 3 weeks you can start a fast. water and apple juice carrot juice and all just juice. There are several cleanse pills avalible that help break up mucus in you take these also. this fast should last a week. Then go a head and eat vegtables agian for a week and start another fast after that.

You mix bentonite clay with siluim husk and apple juice. Two to 3 times a day. cyanne pepper pills can help suppress appitite.

The bentonite clay helps remove toxins. If you keep you body on the alkiline side you sould clear out alot of stuff.
You need to eat up time.As far as I know the toxins go away with time
water is a very good way to flush out toxins another way isvisiting a beauty salon and gettin a detox but you probally dont want to do that stay off tea and especially coffee etc.a good way are herbal teas, lemon waters basically plenty of water ,it will take a while for your body to flush out the toxins but given time this will happen just stay off junk stuff, i take you don-t want to do anything drastic either so i think this is the best option...and most of all....stay off the ciggaretts!!!!

Whats a good method to help quit smoking? -

I-m using the patch currently, and I-m trying to find other ways that will help me -kick the butt-. I-d like some really inexpensive, effective ways of quiting! If you know of some, please help!
Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

check out this site for several daily online voice meetings

I would just go cold turkey. In all honesty its supposed to be the quickest way to quit. Just stop using cigs and stop using the patch, just quit all of a sudden. You will go through withdrawal but after a day or two you won-t have any mood swings and only slight problems but in about 5 days the craving is completely gone.
Cold Turkey. I did it. You just have to have lots of will power.

I want to quit smoking... can i just do marijuana instead? -

ive been smoking since i was 15, i did marijuana for like 11 times already for the past 2 months... i wanna quit smoking!help!
ok...I quit smoking on Jan 20th of this year...Its all in your head. I am 29 and started smoking when I was 14. You just have to make up your mind that you are never going to smoke again no matter what. Don-t give yourself a choice, in your head, you have to convince yourself that smoking is no longer an option. I promise you will get used to it. I feel so much better, I cant even explain it. I had forgotten what it felt like to actually breath a deep breath into my lungs. Feels good! Its all about what your telling yourself. Prepair yourself for what is going to happen. You have to know what to expect. You WILL try to reason with yourself. You will tell yourself that it is ok to have just one, just this one time, its ok, you can handle it. NO you can-t...it is the addiction, just know that this will happen and be prepaired to tell yourself no. Don-t start smokin pot instead...Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. and no matter what anybody else says...mental addiction is more powerful than physical addiction, so...just cause weed isn-t physically addicting don- t mean nothin. Just give it up all together...you can do it.

Good Luck...
that it-s better for you is not what I-ve heard, I can remember hearing on a tv program that marajuana is much more toxic, and smoking one joint is like several cigarettes. By all means research this. Look up the American cancer societies website for good tips and possible support for quitting. Your local hospital may have groups as well. Get to know yourself, when do you usually crave a cigarette? Can you avoid those situations, or have an alternative activity planned? Be patient with yourself, some people can just go cold turkey, others may try dozens of times before the change sticks, just DON-T give up.
smoking is smoking. no matter what the substance. if you INHALE it, that is carbon monoxide into your lungs. there is just as much harm from cigarette SMOKE as there is Pot SMOKE....
Oh yeah there-s a smart idea buddy...take up smoking weed to quit smoking cigarettes...then maybe when you want to quit weed...you can start smoking crack...or maybe shoot some heroin...

**idiot**
Are you smoking the mj? If you are then you are still smoking. Try switching to a REALLY nasty brand of cigarette for a while to aid you in quitting. That is what I did, two years ago and have not smoked since. Good Luck
i know it is difficult to quit smoking. find an altenative. like always eat candy. your mouth would be busy. in that way, you may forget smoking.
If marijuana will help you quit tobacco, go for it. It takes an average of 7 tries to quit, so do everything you can. Marijuana is considerably better for you health-wise and is not physically addictive, so you should be able to stop it whenever you want.

i don-t know, i-m bipolar and just quit smoking 2mos ago and it was extremely hard. the reason i can-t tell is because i can-t compare to what it-s like to not be bipolar, if that makes any sense.

I quit smoking 2 weeks ago today, what can I do to reward myself w/o spending money? -

The reason I dont want to spend money on it is b/c I dont want to feel selfish about it b/c its nobody`s fault but my own that I started smoking to begin with.Any suggestions?
Give yourself a pedicure, do your nails ...

I honestly think you should splurge on something
that is an accomplishment!
Print a nice diploma
Wow, you have a guilt complex. If I ever quit for two weeks I won-t have a big problem buying something. But accountability is weak in the world these days so I commend you for it.

Do something you like to do whether it costs money or not. Or something that you like to do that doesn-t cost money. You can go anywhere now because you don-t smoke, so go somewhere you wouldn-t have gone before because you had to smoke, like the movies.

And get this question off as soon as possible because it-s going to draw about a zillion -have a cigarette- responses.
Smoke a victory square.

How did you quit smoking? -

How did you quit smoking? -

Please include how long and how much you smoked prior to quitting. Also, how many times did you try to quit before you were successful?
I was a die-hard smoker for 20+ years.... I quit smoking almost a year ago (last October) and here is what I did. When I decided to quit- I just plain old quit. No having a puff or one on a bad day.... I started out using the patch and it was too heavy for me. So after that I did it on my own. I tell ya- I bitched and moaned.... I talked about it and complained.... I whined and whined.... but I just didn-t smoke. I allowed myself to openly complain. In fact i talked about it for days and days... I just DIDN-T smoke. Since i allowed myself to complain, I let that be the outlet for my desire. It is also a proven fact that someone who has tried to quit in the past has a higher chance of quitting every time they try to quit. So, if this is your first time trying to quit, chances are you will start up again. If this is your 50th time trying to quit, you may be successful this time....
Just be easy on yourself. It-s hard to quit. Just be strong and make it happen for yourself. Quitting smoking is one of the best things i ever did for myself. Honestly, I NEVER think about it anymore. No more- GOD I NEED A CIGARETTE! The thought never ever crosses my mind anymore. It is hard but SOOOOOOOOO worth it. You-ll feel so proud of yourself. Just know that once you actually quit smoking and put it behind you - you can then accomplish anything you set your mind to.
the only way to quit smoking is to tell ur that u are not gonna smoke and belive in ur self
I smoked from the time I was 12 until I was 24. My heaviest was in college and right after, when I was up to 1-1/2 packs a day.

To quit, I enrolled in a cessation program offered by my employer. It involved -aversion therapy-. This was a program wherein I was placed in a closet papered with photos of the adverse effects of smoking (pictures of cancerous lungs, etc), and told to smoke as many cigarettes as I could in a 5 minute period. Each puff of the cigarette delivered a small but unpleasant shock to my finger tip. This process continued for 5 days straight.

I don-t know if it was the therapy that succeeded, or the pressure from my coworkers. This was back in the early 80s, when it was perfectly acceptable to light up at your desk. My coworkers were very happy when I quit!!
I smoked for 50 years. I tried to quit about 4 times. I smoked 2 packs a day and sometimes more.
I was told of a new drug that helps with quitting.
I asked my Dr for a prescription and The drug is called Chantix. You take one pill each morning for the first week and you also keep smoking during that week. The second week you take two pills and no smoking. You continue this for 3 months, and during that time you renew the prescription two more times. It cost me $120.00 3 times. and saved me 2,064 since I stopped 26 weeks a go. If you have any questions, email me.
Nort
Pot: It took about 5 years. Use to spend about $50 a week, and that was enough to roll 12 nice doobies. I still miss it sometimes. My buddies always want to come over and -burn one-, but I-ve got a job and responsibilities that keep me sober. Cigarettes have been an on and off struggle that I-ve won. It took me 6 attempts to finally quit. Use to smoke about 1/2 a pack to 3/4 of a pack daily. I had to gradually cut down, allowing myself one fewer each day. After that it-s a matter of not buying them anymore, staying away from the -smokers- crowd, and keeping myself busy.
The easy way - - I never started.
I smoked for over 30 years, and I quit in one hour by being hypmotized. It was $500 well spent
I smoked from 16-23. I-m 24 now. The easiest way for me was to mentally associate the smoking -habit- it self as really negative. At the time I couldn-t afford the patch or orther expensive modes of therapy so I just chewed a lot of gum and let myself have thoughts of smoking. When you supress them that is when they are the worst, because then it becomes taboo. Allow urself to morn the loss mentally and physically and think about smoking, but don-t acutally do it! Good luck! Its all a mental thing!
I am quitting tomorrow. I-ll use the new pill that-s out, but it-s like $100, or the patch. I quite before 10 years ago and started back up 7 years ago. Drat! It-s not easy, but just know that the cravings only last for a few minutes. We can get through a few minutes. Then the cravings become further and further apart until they are pretty much gone. The longer you have smoked the harder it is to give it up because it becomes a part of you. We have to learn to let it go and not stress about it. Just relax and deal with one craving at a time and keep thinking into the future.
My mom was a smoker, she started when she was 15 so about 22 years ago and she hasn-t smoked for about 10 years now. She used the patch and that was it for her. She tried a few other times cold turkey but of course that didn-t work for her. Now days there are more things then my mom had like the gum or there is a pill too. Good Luck and hang it there, if you start again try to quit again!!

Quit smoking? -

I want to quit so bad. For me, it is really hard. My husband knows I want to quit really bad. He came home with some Nicorette gum. He said he heard that the patches have long term affects of some kind. The gum has nicotine in it. How is that going to work when it has nicotine. Cigarettes have nicotine. I-m trying to not have nicotine in my body. Why is it so hard for me?
Quit cold turkey, that way you are not dependent on any patch or gum or whiney soso to help you through the pain of withdrawal.

I carried a open pack of cigarettes in my shirt pocket for six weeks after I stopped lighting them and let it go at that. Been off since 1990

Good luck
go to your doctor and get -welbutrin sr 150 mg-. you take it twice a day and within 2 weeks, you-ve lost all cravings for smokes.
Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things I have ever done! The best way to quit smoking is #1 you have to really want to, #2 exercise, exercise and more exercise. Everytime you think of a cigarette go run and feel your lungs burn all that tar out of them.. You have to find something to replace the cigarettes I used exercise but I-m sure there are plenty of other options go to the library, gym, read a book, clean anything to take your mind off of it.. hope this helps!!

Well you have the first part down...you WANT to quit. Pick up a book called Allen Carr-s Easy Way To Stop Smoking. It is not a put down book by telling you you are going to die if you don-t etc. You know as a smoker those antics do not work. This book has helped my husband quit while he was in Iraq doing combat missions. He did it in as stressful place as any. He doesn-t even want it anymore. He had tried unsuccessfully MANY times with the Wellbutrin, patches, gum etc..with no luck..If you look it up on Amazon you will see all the wonderful reviews. Good luck and God bless! P.S. You do not quit smoking during the reading of this book. It explains it all. I believe in this book as I have seen many success stories.

How-s the no smoking going? It truly sucks to go through the withdrawal over and over. I have quit 10 times. When I start again, I just feel like a big ole loser. If you get the urge smell an ashtray. That will stop you. Congrats on quitting!
You-ll add 10 years to your life.
it can kill you
you - your home wont smell
you-ll feel better
less of a risk of cancer
you might live longer
Smoking can kill you
Well, the most important reason, it for your health. It causes cancer. I once saw this poster that showed a girl with black all over her face. It said if you looked like this on the outside, would you quit. Because this is how you look on the inside. To bad you couldn-t see this poster. Also, look wise it ages you a lot. Makes your nails yellow and cuts off the circulation. Your skin will age much faster then if you didn-t smoke. Unless you have extremely good genes. But most people age faster. It causes lung cancer. And people often get a really bad chronic hacking cough. That is not only annoying to the person themselves, but I would think embarassing. Good Luck!!!! You can do it!!!!
What about your health??? Just think about how black your lungs must be!!! And what about the cost factor??? If you put that money away that you have spent on cigaretes, how much money would you have??? I-m sure that you could take yourself on a nice holiday!!! Wouldn-t that be nice!!!
you have to quit for yourself. the answer is not here or i any of the other responses you got. it is inside you, and you will get there when you are ready.
Cost too much money
one is because it smells but also you deserve to live a long and healthy life do you have kids? that is reason enough
I can give you very clear reasons for to quit smoking.5 friends very close to me died. Why? For the simple fact to be smokers. When they started to smoking, they were very young, they said: I am okay, but years after they were very sick, they said:We regret the fact that we never listen the good advices friends gave us.Then when the sickness started to kill one by one; it was too late.Others friends I have, they were very smart, like you; and with wisdom, they quit to smoke;and guess what? They are still alive, healthy, happy forever. They quit to smoke many years ago.Good luck, try,do it and you will be another wonderful winner, escaping from death to life.Good luck.I do not smoke, because I believe I do not need it for to live.Good luck.
ITS A DIRTY SMELLY HABIT....STAINS YOUR TEETH....THE WALLS CIGARETTE ODOR PERMEATES YOUR HOUSE....YOUR SKIN WILL BENEFIT.....GO FOR IT.....MUCHO SUCCESS TO YOU.......I SMOKE
So you won-t stink and your house won-t smell. Whether you realize it or not, to nonsmokers you stink when you smoke and everything in your house reeks. I have never smoked, but my parents both did and I didn-t realize how strong the smell was until I moved out of the house.

Good luck stopping!
Just to win yourself that it is you who can do it if you want !

Just because you can win yourself. It is because you know that 90% of people lying in Hospital regret to say that they had been a chain smoker in their earlier life. But these are not enough reasons. You should quit smoking because you have someone to love. Someone in this world, who will weep if you are not well. For his or her sake just you will quit. This is not even enough reason to quit. You will quit smoking because you will continue to come and joy us in this Yahoo answers as before. I hope we will like to see you from this moment a Winner. A man who won himself and because he has the power to do it from this moment, right now. Just throw the white poison wrapped in paper from your fingers. Cry these words : I can win. I am the winner. and thereafter ring your girl friend, if any that you have won, or your kind parents that you have quit smoking forever. And a kind e-mail to me if possible. Wish you a very Happy bright future.

One thing more, if it all not possible, just quit it for a day only. i.e. Today.
bcause others want to be healty(non-smoker).
Plus costly
to not get lung cancer, to not get a perminate cough that will not let u sleep at night like my mom had
somebody told me this once:
kissing a smoking girl, is like kiss an ashtray

think about the children, the kids, they smell the smoky lady

i do smoke and i-m not quitting, but i know i must.
your hair stinks, your clothes stink, your teeth are yellow, and when you cough, you sound like a 60-year-old man.

howz that?

i-m not joking about how much you stink - if i get in an elevator with someone who smokes, i can tell instantly. it-s disgusting.
You answered your own question

-...since it is a discusting habit-
It is a filthy habit
costly
causes cancer
makes your teeth yellow (and your skin looks papery and ugly too)
makes your hair stink
you do not look cool smoking
go lick a full ash tray...that what it is like kissing a smoker
do you still need more reasons???
A research surgeon compared two lungs - one of a non smoker and one of a smoker... the smoker-s lung was shriveled and blackened. It makes your nails yellow, your breath smell bad and causes you to cough. Did you know that a smoker just passing someone in the mall with asthma can cause that person to be rushed to hospital with with life threatening breathing problems? It happened to me once. That why you should not smoke- but most of all- you should do it as a favor to your own health. Kids also suffer the same with smokers unexpectedly lighting a cigarette up nearby them.
Since I am going to have all the tests done tomorrow to check for COPD (I have been smoking for 49+ years), I can comment!! Every answer that has been given is correct, but telling a smoker to look at your dirty lungs or your breath is disgusting is like showing a drug addict a picture of a man in prison or a dead man (we all know that drug addiction can only lead to death or prison)!!!!!! Smoking is a powerful addiction, and, yes, the only thing that tugs at my heart strings is to know that my body is supposed to be a temple for God...pure...Am I going to quit???????? I don-t know....the disease of addiction owns me at this point. It doesn-t ever get easier, so give it your best and good luck.
I don-t need to give you reasons. You know them all and if you aren-t impressed or motivated by those reasons, millions of people telling you isn-t going to make a whole lot of difference.

It can be done, I did, but I really wanted to...for me.
your life and all those you love and who love you should be the biggest and most important reasons.
I-m a nurse, and I-ve taken care of hundreds of people who were dying of lung cancer from smoking. It also increases your chances of having a stroke.

I used to smoke 2.5 packs a day and quit cold turkey. It is the only way to do it. It is hard, I will pray for you, but I believe you can do it.

The best reason is that you want to be here years from now to watch your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.
You know its like a desease you trying to have it. DID not you see oprah show? they brought lungs which is good - other have a cancer. Also your teeth will be black ,your body will have bad smell, your nails will be darker skin than your hands.By time, you will not be able to bring baby, and if you are in my country, you will lose 204.000.000$ in year which you could buy a house or acar.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$…
you-re more likely to have lung disease such as emphysema, where you are short of breath all the time. I can remember reading about Richard Boone the actor who had it...he was so bad he couldn-t get out of bed or do anything. Just think laying in bed all day and not being able to move, it-s not the way I want to live my life.
The best thing I got from quitting (other than the obvious) was better breath.
One word - Waste. Smoking is a waste of time, money, good health, energy and self-esteem.

Have a read of this story on the Baccy Gang:

And you are so coooool to quit!
you know the reasons ..just do it ...i quit cold turkey after 35 years of smoking ..i was a chain smoker but i did it ...i am smoke free for over 5 years now..good luck and bless you..you will feel so much better
