Chantix...Should I try Chantix To Help Quit Smoking? How Expensive Is Chantix? -

Chantix is a terrific way to stop smoking and it-s a very effective new treatment. For more information about Chantix, click the following link:
http://www.121doc.co.uk/affiliate/script…

I-ve heard good things about it, and the cost is high, like over a hundred a month
I tried Chantix and it works. I-ve been smoking for a very long time. Since it just came out and I got it before my health provider had it listed as covered, it cost me $122.00 for the first month of pills. You get 4 separate packs for each week. It says to pick a day when you want to quit and start your first pack a week prior. during this week you can smoke, but by the end of the week, the cigarettes start to taste so horrible that you don-t want to. it worked for me and i tried everything. its also a 3 month program. even if your not covered, its still only $30 a week, same money you would use on smokes. good luck. and trust me, it works
I was just recently prescribed this by my doctor, but I decided against filling it and did it cold turkey. I have quit in the past (over a yr) and then -something- happened in life and I picked it up again. You know what they say...Just one drag will suck you back in and trust me IT DOES!! When I quit that time I did it cold turkey too and I had smoked for 13 yrs.

In all honesty it comes down to will power and how much you really want something. If you really truly want to quit then you will with or without help of medication.

Whatever route you decide to go I wish you the best, its not easy but its certianly possible. I know this time no matter what -curve balls- life throws at me I will NOT pick a cigarette back up to help relieve the stress. I am done and done for good.
My wife is moderator of a quit smoking group on Yahoo and so many use Chantix with good results. I am not too sure of the cost though
my wife and i used wellbutrin the generic for the Zyban
got more than 20 from Doc for trial and a script. Since my plan covered some pysch stuff i only paid 30 bucks for it worked GREAT~! 4 years no and no craving yet. recommend losing a bunch of weight before you quit will help. also...support from your partner or spouse...necessary. Check your plan for smking cessation some plans will pay 100 % of any smoking sessation plan...comes from the class action suits over smoking related cancer
My best friend and her husband both took it and had great results and they both only took it for 3 weeks!!! Its worth a shot! Good Luck

Facts to use as motivation to quit smoking and chewing? -

My boyfriend smokes, and uses those chew pouches to control his cravings when he can-t smoke. I-m going to buy him the patch, but I want to show him solid facts to kind of put fear in him and make him aware of how it is affecting him everywhere, not just his lungs.

Links would be awesome! Thank you guys for your help.
I-m a dental student, and we counsel every patient that walks in about tobacco (whether or not they smoke). There is so, so much out there that shows research about how awful it is, and I-ll try to find some. However, I think the best and more effective way is by finding some risky-looking things in the mouth. Almost 100% of smokers and chewers will develop some sort of oral lesion. A lot of them are benign, but some will become cancerous. I know that -scare tactics- aren-t a fair way to educate someone, but there-s something to be said for getting a point home when you can see evidence in your own body.

Here-s what to do: take a flashlight and shine it into his mouth (or have him look himself.) Have him stick his tongue out and look under it, and on either side (way in the back). Look at the skin on the inside of his cheeks, the roof of his mouth, and on the inner side of upper and lower lips. Look for any white spots, ulcers, or red spots. Here-s an idea of what to look for:

http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/NR/rdonlyres/69…

With people who chew, almost everyone will develop a corrugated white lesion called hyperkeratosis. Here-s an idea:

If you see ANYTHING abnormal, make sure he gets to his dentist to get it looked at.

Tell him that he is 5 times more likely to get periodontitis (severe gum disease), which has irreversible bone loss and can cause his teeth to get loose. Also, the massive amounts of bacteria associated with gum disease has been linked to heart disease and stroke as well.

If he ever has surgery, it will be difficult for him to heal. In fact, dentists will NOT place implants and most hospitals will reject regular surgery if the patient smokes. That means if he needs something done, he will simply be sent him. Period. They don-t mess around with it since smokers have such poor healing rates and sometimes even get worse after surgery because tobacco constricts blood vessels.

And his cancer risk is MUCH higher, of course.

Here are some good sites:

Here-s a link to a picture of a smoker-s black lungs next to a a cancerous lung - not pretty.

Hope your boyfriend manages to quit:-)
Find pictures of people with gum cancer after chewing. It-s freakin discusting. Then once he grosses out on those, tell him his lungs look worse than that. Once he chews the gum or wears the patch, and he intakes nicotine he-ll be in so much pain he won-t want to do it again.
He should use some natural products, which can help quit smoking, a product which can relieve symptoms.

Quit Smoking? -

I-m finally ready to quit smoking. I-ve been a smoker since I was 14 year old. I-m now in my early 30-s. I-m so disappointed in myself for smoking. My children tell me every day to stop. (both my husband and I are smokers...we only smoke outside)
Has anyone sucessfully quit? My quit day is May 1, 2008.
I have NEVER given it an honest effort to try to quit. There-s this really nieve/stupid part of my mind that says -if 50% of smokers die...I-ll be part of the other 50% that survives. Why can-t I get it through my head that this sh*t is going to kill me AND I just hate myself for setting such a poor example for my children.
I wish I could actually see inside my body and understand exactly what I-m doing to myself. I was thinking of volunteering in the cancer ward at our local hospital. But again...my mind will think...-that-ll never happen to me-
WHY am I so ignorant when it comes to this?
I-m a bright person, self employed, do quite well for myself....HELP!!
I smoked for 25 years and quit. It wasn-t as hard as I thought it was going to be. For me, the patch and gum were helpful. I used the patch until I had a skin reaction to the adhesive (this happens to me fairly often), which was about 3 weeks, then I switched to the gum.

I had tried quitting in my 20s and it was too hard for me. In the ensuing 20 years, as I lived through many things, I found that quitting smoking was a challenge, but nothing compared to some stuff I had endured.

I always reminded myself when I got the urge while quitting that whether or not I smoked the cigarette I wanted right then, the urge would not be fulfilled. If I smoked it, I-d want another in an hour. If I didn-t smoke it, I-d want another. So why give in, if it wouldn-t fulfill me?

The other very helpful thing I did, was to say to myself when I wanted a cigarette, -I want a cigarette, but I CHOOSE not to smoke one.- This does 2 important things psychologically: 1) it acknowledges the desire. Suppressing a desire often only makes it come back stronger. Acknowledging it disempowers it. 2) It empowered ME instead. It said that I was stronger than the desire to smoke ... that I always, every minute, every day, had the power not to smoke.

Best of luck to you. It-s never too late, and it-s a brave task to undertake.
There is a prescription drug which finally worked for me. It is called Chantix. My insurance wouldn-t cover it and I paid $100 a month. I think that it was the biggest help for me.
I had to go in for a tonsillectamy(not sure how to spell that but its when they take your tonsils out) So because of that i had to refrain from smoking for 2 -3 weeks. I did and god was it hard at times when I got stressed out and eventually i didnt need it at all. Its been a month now and i tried smoking a cigarette again and god did it taste disgusting and i could actually feel it hurting my lungs. I didnt get it so i had another after throwing the half finished first away and still hated it. I just realised today that i didnt need it and im so happy and i feel happier and healthier already. Im glad i quit young but i dont think i could have quit without that 4 weeks of not having any.
You should try to get a prescription for Chantix. It will make you feel a little nauseous the first week of taking it, but it gradually makes you smoke less and eventually make you not want to smoke at all. My stepdad had been smoking since he was 14 years old too, and he is now 42 and has been quit for 2 years due to taking Chantix. Hope this helps. Good luck!!
one of my relatives has been a smoker since 16 and she quit this past year, and she looks so much better, and she said she just FEELS better. and i think that if you feel that way, that you set a bad example. then you would be setting an example by quiting.

i hope that helped your decision.
I-ve tried Champix. you need a prescription for it. I-ve actually found an easier way to quit smoking but i-ll get to that in a sec.

Champix, I think it was available before this year but i think it was only until Jan 1st this year that the Australian Government decided to subsidise it.

It is designed to be a nicotine receptor for the brain. Make your brain feel like it-s getting nicotine, hence remove the cravings. As a former smoker myself and having tried the champix drug, i-d just like to say, that the drug is not very effective. Reason being is that there is nothing that helps you address the psycological aspect of quitting smoking.

I-ve tried calling the quit smoking hotline for support but i-m afraid that they aren-t much help. Well they weren-t for me. I was still struggling after 3 weeks, i was getting stressed at everyone, stressed at work, had poor concentration and was getting depressed. What many non smokers dont understand is that smoking had become a social part of my life. It-s kinda like taking away a day off.. Sunday from your normal life.

Try this new product called the electronic cigarette. It’s a new non burning device with no tobacco or any other harmful chemicals. It does contain nicotine and it emits -smoke- in the form of vapour. I don’t think they are readily available in Australia yet, but in Europe it looks like it’s a big hit. I bought mine online and I must say, it actually feels and looks like a cigarette, but it isn’t. I paid $50 for mine but after that I only have to change the cartridges at $2 each. So im still saving a lot of money. Much cheaper than those patches and gums on the market, not to mention much more effective.

It-s a nicotine delivery device that imitates the same sensations as a real cigarette but without the risks. I think this helped me stay off tobacco for now. I find the hardest part is not just quitting the nicotine, but quitting the habit.

Its now nearly 3 months on the electronic cigarette and im down to low strength cartridges. They even got nil nicotine cartridges.

I hope i this information helps you all trying to quit as it sure has helped me. Quitting smoking

How can i make my father quit smoking? -

my father smokes a lot.we have told him so much about disadvantages of smoking be he never persuades.now what can i do???
You can-t force anyone to do something they don-t want to do. Just keep pounding the negatives of smoking into his head.
Does it bother him that he is harming the other people that he lives with? Would it bother him if you got lung cancer? Or his wife?
Sorry but you can-t. It-s something he has to want to do. I had a friend that had lung cancer and they removed one of his lungs. He still smoked until it killed him.
d/l and print out articles on second hand smoke and leave it in a place where he can read it, It-s killing you
hypnotism...it really works and I dont believe in that kind of thing but my boyfriend use to smoke all the time and hasnt since then
you can-t make anyone quit, most react in anger because we feel like we are getting are rights to freedom taken away too. wish their was a way to make it fair for non smokers an smokers ,it is a legally sold product .You can get the nickerett gum or patch and give it to him as a gift and say dad you can try this if you want to. he will probably say no, if so tell him to put in in his desk or some place and it will be their if he decides to try it. AT LEAST YOU CAN SAY YOU TRIED TO HELP. you would be surprised at the amount of smokers that won-t buy the stuff to help them quit because its so expensive. if they really want to solve the problem of people quiting they should give it away or lower the prices to the same amount as a pack of cigarettes .I WONDER- IF I COULD buy a pack of nickarett gum with 20 pieces or pack of 20 cigarettes I AS A SMOKER TOO I-D BUY the gum AND TRY IT if it was the same price as the cigarettes,I told a doctor that once and of course the rich can-t see ,like right now a person may have $5.00 in their pocket the stuff to help them quit $52 which one is the person going to buy. ask your dad why he hasn-t bought the patch or gum .
The only thing that you could possibly offer is to quit something with him. It is so much easier to have a partner and a support person to help go through it together. Kind of like a Weight Watchers or AA for smoking, ya know? Is there a habit or something you-re doing that you could and should quit and -buddy up- with him? For example, if you drink a lot of Cokes and know how bad they are for you, offer to be his quitting buddy. You-ll quit Cokes if he-ll quit smoking. Or you-ll start exercising, or you-ll diet, or stop chewing your nails, or whatever it is you can change WITH him. Talk about your progress and your weak moments to each other. Be supportive and each other-s motivation. Also, has he heard of Chantix? It-s a pill the smoker takes to alleviate the cravings for nicotene.
You can-t make your father stop smoking, just like any other drug he will want to have to want to quit.

(Many blessings)
all you can do is try. you can-t make anyone do something they don-t want to do. you can continue to talk about it with him, suggest some ways of quitting, and tell him all the bad things it can do you, but its hard for a person to quit and they only can if they really want to
take out a cigerrate in front of him and try to light it ......

ever heard of a quote .... -venom is a cure for poison -

i did it when i was 11 to my dad

What is the most effective way to quit smoking without spending too much money? -

I know that I need to quit and I have tried many times. What have you tried and found to be the most successful solution?
Go Cold Turkey.

I smoked since I was 15 years old. When I found out I was pregnant I just stopped but started again when my daughter was 1.5 years old.

Then, I started to think about not being around for her if I kept smoking so one fine day, I just stopped. I think I scared myself enough.

That was in Sept 2005 and I haven-t lit up since.
I was a smoker for 25 years and I had quit smoking for over six times ,but never really quit smoking before.Just after I read that quit smoking program, I realized how easy quitting smoking was.I am a non-smoker now! I highly recommend this program to you.It really works. You can check out
http://quit-smoking-in-3-hours.info

Good luck!
Well smoking makes you get horible wrinkles around your mouth and face and make your skin look like crap. Seeing this on other smokers made me quit. Does that help? Hope I am not too late.
I tried a lot of stuff, but I finally quit cold turkey, that-s free, and haven-t had one since January of 1990 and I smoked for 30 years.
I-ve attempted to quit smoking a few times and it is very difficult. I know there are quite a few things out there that supposedly helps, but I think it has to do with you really wanting to quit. I-ve been told several times that medication (Chantix-the new one that-s out) or gum or that other stuff won-t help as much without having the WILL to quit. Good luck to you! :-)
There are multiple programs put on by the gov-t that are free for you to stop smoking
I would call your local hospital and talk with the social services division. They shoudl be able to guide you to the right phone #-s for your area.
Wellbutrin - your insurance may cover it. It is a mild anti-depressant that has been found to help people quit smoking. It worked for me 18 months ago.
Cold turkey. Just stop. Very cheap.
think about it this way, u may spend 20 bucks a week on smokes, well if u quite on somthin a lil expensive now u will win in the long run :)
good luck i quit smoking a few yesrs ago
Don-t buy cigarettes, don-t ask people for cigarettes. Don-t even touch a cigarette and you won-t be able to smoke anymore. I gave up trying to quit. Still smoking. Good luck!
Quit cold turkey.
I have told several of my patients this method and they have all had sucess with it.

The problem with quitting cold turkey is that depending on how much you smoke now, you body has a craving for the nicotine. You need to wean your body off slowly. So here is what you do.

Start out with the normal amount of cigarettes you smoke in a week. Take 2 away the first week.

Every week after the first week, take away 1 more cigarette from what you normally smoke until you are down to none. This way your body is easing itself off the nicotine addiction, you don-t have to spend money on expensive patches or gum, and you still are able to maintain the oral fixation, which is easier to get rid of than the nicotine addiction.

Hope this helps!!!
when you lite up a cigarette, just get one puff only then throw the cigarette away. if you still want to smoke then lite up another one, have one puff and throw it away. if you stick with it, you WILL quit!! Or when you lite one cigarette, throw one away!! trust me. stick with it and it will work.
well i know that its a big turn off just the smell in ur closths house hair breath everything n it really hard 2 get out almost n possible,,,,,,,,,,,my mother smokes n i cant stand it.........it makes me want to get away from her...............which isnt a real good thing lol......so think of it as if u smoke the people u love wont want 2 b around u...........or how dicusting it is when u smell it on a person.....no hard feelings k? and good luck

He doesn-t smoke around me because he knows it really bothers me. But sometimes he also shows up to meet me with smoke breath. Even if I can-t get him to stop, how can I at least get him to stop before meeting up with me?

I-m 16, he-s 17
If you hate smoking. Don-t date smokers. That-s just common sense.
You can-t make him quit because he has to do it on his own. He has to decide if you or smoking is more important. He has to realize that he is an addict and can-t quit on his own. He has to go to a doctor for help. He will quit if you tell him if it-s me or the cigarettes. Think of all money you can spend together instead of the cigarettes.
More than 400,000 individuals die from tobacco each year. If you care for him have him quit for his health
I think this is one of your best decisions. You must know what are the advantages of quitting:

Is there any way to tell if someone has quit smoking when they hang out with others that do smoke? -

My teenage son admitted to me he was smoking and he asked for help quitting. Nobody in our home smokes and I have never seen him smoke, he admits he was smoking with friends. They gave him cigarettes, he has no money to purchase any. He has been chewing gum to help, I purchased a used dirt bike that he can have if he stops smoking. He was with friends at school and they were turned in for smoking. My son claims he was with the group but not smoking because he really wants the dirt bike. He claims he told the police that he was smoking because they wouldn-t believe him and he didn-t want to argue. I don-t know what to believe. His friends claim he was not smoking but they are not the most reliable sources of information. He was also fined $50 which I have to pay this month. I have explained to him numerous times that by associating with those who partake of illigal substances for a 15 year old he was putting himself in a vulnerable situation that would catch up to him.
There would be no for sure way to tell. Unless they were caught on a security camera or you could get intouch with whoever turned them in. They might have witnessed if your son was smoking. Other than that I think you-ll either have to trust him and believe him or not trust him and see him as being dishonest. But remember the fact that your son came to you for help. That is great, I wouldn-t have dared asked my mom for help when I was his age. And I think you should help him the best you can. I honestly think it might take a little more than bribery. I would highly recommend that you stress the importance of him quiting though. Even if you have to take him to meet people with emphazyma and other dieseases caused by smoking. He will be old enough to drive before you know it, and then he can leave and go smoke far from where you will catch him. I even hid my cigarettes in my car when I was 16. I am only 20 and have been smoking since I was about his age, maybe a little younger. My lungs have suffered so bad from this. I guess a pack and a half a day will do that to you. They hurt when I even do moderate physical activity. Although I have tried to quit many times all attempts have failed. Tell him he doesn-t have to smoke to be a bada$$ there are plenty of other ways to be -cool.- I would make sure he knows how much he will regret it in the future. I have only been smoking for 6 or 7 years and I hate it, but it is so damn addictive. This is probably the toughest thing I have had to deal with in my short lifetime. Don-t let your son make the same mistake. I would at all cost prevent him from picking this habit up. Even if it means losing some so called friends. I would have hated my mother when I was 15 if she made me lose my friends that got me into smoking, but now I-m hating most of those friends and their peer pressure. Good luck. And don-t give up on your son.
Well, if you had to pay a 50 dollar fine, than he hasn-t earned the bike yet.

What is cold turkey and any tips to quit SMOKING? -

What is cold turkey and any tips to quit SMOKING? -

I have heard this -cold turkey- wen I was looking for ideas on how to quit smoking.
What is cold turkey? And any suggestions for me to quit smoking please? I prefer suggestions that do not involve nicotine gums or patches or any such tertiary stuff.

I have been smoking for 8yrs now. I smoke 8-10 cigarettes a day. It used to be 10-15 wen I worked night shifts.

I even tried to quit totally once and I went into depression. But then, I had no job either and that was nagging me. But now I have a good job and still can not quit smoking. Everytime I try to reduce, I miraculously meet smoker frnz and start smoking.

But 1 thing is for sure-

I WANT TO QUIT SMOKING.

HELP!!
I did not start smoking until my mid 30-s. Stupid, right? I had all the reasons to smoke, if you call extreme stress among those. I also had so many wonderful reasons NOT to smoke. 4 of those were my children who were looking at me like I was dropped from an foreign planet. Those 8 piercing eyes resulted just a few years later into 6 eyes belonged to young developing bodies and young adults that decided they were going to also pick up this nasty habit. In other words, 3 of my 4 children became smokers.
I decided that New Years Day I was going to smoke what cigarettes I had and not buy anymore for myself. So far so good--a little over 8 months have gone by. My reasons to stop:
1. Money--I have saved an estimated $623 in purchasing to these cancer by-products alone. I could count more if you count that when stopping at the local fast food store, I usually spent more than just money for cigarettes.
2. My health and concerns for a better life to breathe deeply and walk at the same time without being out of breath.
3. My children. Now out of those 3 children of mine that chose to pick up the habit, I am on them constantly to stop NOW and 2 are in their first week of trying to eliminate the habit as well.
4. Who has the brains to stop, you? Or do you allow the cigarette to rule your mind and you end up giving in to a stupid piece of rolled up paper with chemicals that have been proven over and over again to cause health problems.
5. Additional costs, insurance premiums are higher for a smoker-this includes health and life insurance.
6. Smokers smell. I know, hubby is still a smoker and I end up ticking him off by asking him to move to other side of room, not smoke in bedroom while I-m there, etc. all to avoid smelling the fumes. If you think you can just spray air neurtralizer, you are wrong. That smell is deep within your furniture, your clothes in your closest--everywhere. I read on a website one time, that it would be best if you were a smoker and had a job interview to put your dry-cleaned interview attire in a large zip-lock bag and put them on right before your interview and to at least refrain from smoking while driving to your interview. There is this aura of doom that is invisible to you that you can not see that others smell as being weak.
7. I quit to be around longer so I could be a grandmother to more than just the 1 grandchild that I currently have.
I hope these reasons sink in and do not appear to be preaching. You need to quit for yourself. Besides friends who you used to hang around with and know you are trying to quit, are not really your friends if they light up in front of you. Respect is what they should give you. Respect is what you should give yourself as well.
Good Luck.
perleo
Cold turkey is when you decide to quit smoking, unassisted and with no replacement vises. This usually can only happen when you truly desire to quit smoking. The fact of the matter is most smokers must cut down first in order to quit, and taper off smoking until they no longer desire to smoke. I reccommend that you start cutting down(which is what im doing myself) and notice that you don-t want a ciggerette as much as you think you do, alot of it is habitual, and alot of it is physical addiction, mentally you may be very ready to quit, but don-t underestimate the sway your body can have over your mind. I recommend you cut down, and start chewing gum, that helps with the oral fixation, and is a better vice than many others. Bottom line is if you want to quit smoking, you will.
Quitting cold turkey basically means that you quit smoking. Period. No half measures, no cutting down your daily no. of smokes. You just stop.

It is the hardest yet most effective way. If you feel that you can-t hang around ur smoker freinds without lighting up yourself then you ought to stop meeting them till you-ve been smoke-free for a couple of weeks.

The most effective tool in quitting is will-power. Just put your mind to it and think of all the positives of quitting smoking and all the negatives of continuing to smoke.

Good luck
There are so many sources and helpful books on how to quit smoking and different methods out there that it can get quite confusing. I was a smoker for over 5 years, at my peak I was smoking 10 cigarettes a day. I took it slowly, reducing my intake finally to one a day over the next 2 years. Then I got the flu one week and pretty much felt horrible so i didnt smoke, and I haven-t touched it since.

In brief taking gradually reducing my intake worked for me. Cold turkey would be cutting it off completely and relying on your will power to help you through the cravings.
Cold Turkey is when you just throw away all your cigarettes and stop smoking. This is the most difficult way as you are stopping without any physical help.

My family member, who smoked for 50 years, decided to stop and had the same problems you describe for yourself. He decided he wanted a new car and the money he paid for cigarettes would go towards that dream. He stopped smoking -cold turkey- and used the money he paid for cigarettes to achieve that dream.

Today, he is healthier and happier. Every time you reach for a cigarette, think of your dream. It could be a vacation, car a new wardrobe or something else.

Good luck!
Cold turkey is the Opposite of reducing or cutting back gradually. Cold turkey mean you give them up in one shot...

And by the way, it is the ONLY way to quit.

If you want to seriously quit, Pick a thursday evening. Day 1 you will be working...withdrawal wont be too bad..day two might be a day off..withdrawals will be tough...day 3 you will be in friggin agony..and will want to die...YOU NEED TO TOUGH it out and SUFFER!!! but at least its a Sunday and you might not be stressed at work...Day 4...monday..you-re starting to feel like HEY, I can do this..

Don-t worry, its just a few more days.after that...then you will be freeeeeee!!!!

After about the 7-8 day you are pretty much past the real addiction...Now its all breaking the habit.....

forget about this miraculously you start smoking again...you mean stupidly you start smoking again!!!!!

You will be constantly eating, so make sure you-re taking healthy snacks to work...do not start eating a lot of junk food and gain 50 pounds!!! Because you will, guaranteed.

You wont be able to have even a puff after this, EVER. If you do, you will be instantly addicted again!!! That much I Promise.

Do Not use the gum or anything else!!!! Tough it out, you will make it!!!!

Forget this garbage about making a deal with your friends that if you ask they will say no..as another person suggested..They will gladly give you cigarrettes!!! There is no way any smoker is truely happy to see someone quit...they happily will sabotage your efforts..
YOU QUIT...you don;t ask people for cigarettes!!!!

You are going to have to do better than TRY to quit. You have to QUIT!!!!! If you TRY to quit, you won-t make it. I TRIED to quit about 100 times!!!

Quitting is NOT about willpower. Quitting is about enduring pure hell for 2-3 days in return for a lifetime of freedom from this deadly addiction. The willpower comes later, when you don-t need a cigarette, but foolishly have 1 when you are out drinking!!!!! That-s when willpower comes into play..to say no so you dont get sucked back into it!!!!
Cold turkey means just stopping all at once. I used nicotine gum - losenges and it worked for me when I felt the craving. The only problem was it was hard to stop chewing the gum and also it-s kind of expensive.
Cold turkey means just stopping with no aid like the gum or patches.
Try weaning yourself off it slowly (cutting back gradually) until you start going whole days without even one.

As for the depression, ask you doctor for a perscription to help with that. It is common to have emotional up and downs when trying to get rid of your addition (it is an addiction) and many people find it helps to take medication for it while they are going through the rough times.

Good luck!
I haven-t done it yet, but I want to quit too!!!!
cold turkey is stopping all at once, not stopping gradually
Cold Turkey is quitting smoking all at once. A great tip would be to not have any cigarettes or lighters available to you. You can-t be tempted to have one if you don-t have any. Also tell your smoker friends that you are trying to quit and if you ask them for a cigarette, that they do not give you one.

People usually smoke 1 or 2 cigarettes less each day until they reach none. Writing yourself a little note on why you want to quit, and having it with you is a good idea. It may help reinforce the idea. I hope this helps!
cold turkey is stopping smoking immediately and completely without any - weaning - yourself off.

your doctor can supply certain antidepressant medications that will help stop the cravings.
OK cold turkey is when you just quite with out any help form med-s and as for quiting smoking take it slow and you will get threw it ok take up a hobby when you quiting it will help

ps: quiting smoking is nuthing compared to quiting coke
Try a ahoo search for -how to quit smoking-.
Like everyone else here has said, Cold Turkey is just stopping....

And... The best way to quit smoking is... not to light up another one!

I have quit smoking. What can I do to both ease the side effects and help my body recover from years of abuse? -

Don;t be afraid to get medication for the side effects. nicotine is a powerful drug.

Just stopping helps your body recover! Look at this timeline:

20 minutes:
Blood pressure drops to normal; pulse rate drops to normal; increased circulation in hands

8 hours:
Oxygen level in your blood increases to normal; carbon monoxide level in your blood drops

24 hours:
Your chance for a heart attack has already gone down.

48 hours:
Your ability to smell and taste is already improved; walking is becoming easier.

2 weeks to 3 months:
Your circulation has improved. No more cold hands and cold feet. Your lung function has already increased up to 30%.

1 month to 9 months:
You-ll notice that coughing, sinus congestion and shortness of breath have decreased dramatically. Cilia have re-grown in your lungs increasing your ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs and reduce infection.

1 year:
Your risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half.

5 years:
Risk of stroke reduced to that of a nonsmoker. Risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus cut in half. Risk of lung cancer reduced in half compared to a smoker.

15 years:
Congratulations! Your risk for coronary heart disease and stroke is the same as for a lifelong nonsmoker.
LOL

I quit 55+ years and 5 packs a day

It took over 14 months before I started feeling better

This includes cardio pulmanory rehab
Good job. A big mistake people make is to try to ease the withdrawals.
Live with the side affects (for a short time) to truly understand just how powerful a drug nicotine is. Months from now, you-ll know why you quit and have no desire to start again.
yea probably unless u want 2 keep goin and get lung cancer...
Drink lots of water , exercise and eat a balanced diet.
You can reverse some things that smoking has cause , however somethings cannot be reversed but can be stopped. My advice to you is , get a full physical and see what comes about . To ease the side effects , chew gum , flavored chew sticks ( can be found at a Caribbean store) , suck on mints ect. Also , see a dentist , have your teeth cleaned (not trying to be funny), Get a fresh start . Congrats on stopping it is probably the best thing you could have done for your health and body! Take a vacation with all that you will save :-)
Congrats again and I hope this advice helps you !
Congratulations! You have already done it. Just don-t start back again.
My mom chewed lots of gum... I worked out... My sister B*****d all the time.... You do it your own way... Right before I quit I would start telling myself how nasty those smell, then I would really confess myself, to the point of almost vomiting, I have tried to smoke once again, and cant because I get this nasty taste in my mouth... Just think of the thing you hate the most in the world to eat, like liver... and imagine you are eatting that and you will get that taste in your mouth every time! Try IT!!!!

Hi. Anybody out there that can offer me ways to quit smoking amp; drinking? Im at wits end - thanks? -

First of all you have to be committed to quiting. If you-re not completely committed then forget about quiting. For smoking you need to get on like a program or something. You need to find something that works for you. Maybe go to your doctor and they can help you. Gum, patches. I-m sure there-s some medicine to help too. Drinking is a lot easier to stop. If you can-t stop drinking, then you-re an alcoholic aand you need to get serious help for that. Otherwise, just keep yourself away from parties and people who are going to drink around you. You need to just say no to drinking, buying alcohol or anything. Don-t go to bars or whatever, go bowling instead lol. Get rid of the alcohol in your house. Drinking is really as simple as just not doing it. Smoking is an addiction though so it-s harder. But when things get hard and you feel like you need to smoke or drink, especially when you-re stressed, don-t turn to drinking or smoking. Have to do something else that helps. Exercise or get a massage or i dont know lol, go to the movies.
Hi I-m an alcoholic and I stopped drinking two years ago. I-ve never had a relapse, I quit without Alcoholics anonymous. I have terrible willpower but I still succeeded and I can say with confidence that I will never drink again.

ONE THING AT A TIME!

If you want to quit drinking, don-t try quitting smoking at the same time. It just won-t work and you will fail. It is too much to take on at one time.

Firstly admit that you have a problem, (I assume you have done this) Make a date to quit and see your Doctor about help with withdrawal.

Avoid places where people are drinking in the early days

Join AA only if you must as they have a really high failure rate, instead try rational recovery. (this worked great for me)

Keep a journal and write down all of the emotions you go through after quitting and help you to remind yourself why you quit in the first place.

Join a gym and get fit, this will help a lot.

Get a new hobby and find something which makes your life more enjoyable.

Read about cognitive behavior therapy, You can buy a -Dummies- book about it from Amazon

Meditate daily, try
http://www.moonfish-design.co.uk
there are some great free tools there.

Keep reminding yourself why you quit, don-t listen to the internal voice which tells you to start again.

Do it a day at a time, the days merge into weeks, months and then years.

Check out my blog about alcohol addiction
http://www.addictvoice.com
you-ll find some more tips there.

Wishing you the best, if you really want to quit you will.

Cold turkey, the only way to quit...and lots of support afterward. I-m an ex smoker, I tried gum, pills, patches, filters, everything but hypnosis (not a candidate.) the only thing that worked was putting them down and not picking them up again. It was hell for a few months, but got easier as time passed.
cold turkey... will power... evrythin else is prettymuch useless
Ok, I know most will roll thier eyes at this but.... Alcoholics Anonymous really does help a lot. They use a 12 step program that can also help with any other addictions (of any kind), so it could help with the smoking also. I know it is not for some, maybe not for you, but if doing it on your own doesn-t work (like it didn-t for me), it-s an option. If nothing else, it provides tons of support and I know it has worked for tons of people. You-ve probably already heard of it so if it-s not your kind of thing just disregard....but either way good luck!!!!
yo i can help but it will cost you a little bit of time no doubt about it
here is a method to quit smoking in which you do not need any professional or a deaddiction programme. its a self-help method, you will succeed if you are enough determined to get rid of this evil habit. then here it is :
Saying many ways is not a big deal but you have to accept it so first try to control your mind - heart create a feeling that if your supposed to see a cigar or drink you have to hate it as soon as you seen that, anger towards that must fill your must fill your heart. If ur not sure that u can-t control it by ur mind then go for some pills that-ll help you in controlling - avoiding that things, If ur ready to go for a pills then consult doctors advice befora taking that pills.. The decision u-ve taken to quit smoking - drinking is really good try to leave it soon..All the best...

It-s nicotine withdrawal. Give it time, you will be OK.
Good luck! It-s great you could do it fighting the habit of 40 years!
Withdrawals.
Withdrawal symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms are the physical and mental changes that occur following interruption or termination of drug use. They are normally temporary and are a product of the physical or psychological adaptation to long-term drug use, requiring a period of re-adjustment when the drug is no longer ingested. In the case of smoking, some of these are: [9]

Whats the best way to quit smoking? -

Pretty self explanatory, but I will give some details specific to my situation.

I do work a somewhat stressful job and go to school, so I can-t just go cold turkey unless I wait until Christmas. I HATE nicotine gum, that stuff burns my mouth. The patches don-t seem to deliver a dose for me, whatsoever.

What are other ways to do this?
I’ve noticed that many members of this forum have been asking the same question about the best ways to quit smoking. However the truth is that one which work may not work for others.

The best way to quit smoking is the one that suits you best, if you feel comfortable using a product and you actually see results in a short period of time then keep using it and get a healthier life style.

And I-ve write several articles about it and put in a website where is free for you to visit at
http://stopsmokingherbs.org

You asked the -best way to quit-, yet you already indicated you won-t do it.

Going cold turkey IS the best way to ensure success. The first few weeks are rough, to be sure, but withdrawls from any drug are going to be far from pleasant.

It will help you to quit if you first figure out why you pick up a cigarette. After some soul searching, I figured out that one reason I smoked was to calm hunger pangs. Knowing this, when I wanted a cigarette, I chewed taffy. Really. I got fat, but it was alot easier to lose weight than it was to quit.

The most success will ultimately come from trying and trying again. Eventually, you will get it right.

Good luck.

what is the absolute best way to quit smoking and stay quit???
The best way to quit smoking is to make an absolute decision to quit. You have total control over your addiction, but lack conviction. Find a reason to quit smoking that is better than the excuses you use to keep smoking. I quit 33 years ago and never looked back. You can do the same.
As a Certified Hypnotist, not only do I help individuals who wish to rid the habit of smoking - I have done it myself! It is now over four years and i have not touched - literally -touched- a cigarette! I combine NLP (Tony Robbins) and Hypnosis to put in -roots- - amazing results. Now, you truly have to want to quit or nothing will work (most smokers LIKE to smoke and don-t really want to give it up).....it-s all about you....the hypnotist is there just to -help you change your mind...-
you will do it cold turkey.
great, the first step is the desire for quiting, you should find a natural substitute for smoking, such as tea or coffee. also relaxation exercises and music are great. oh and also stop smoking little by little cuz it-s impossible to quit smoking from one day to another. keep a record on the number of cigars you smoke , but try to drop the amount really significantly, and also think on the financial benefit from quiting
Is there an absolute best way to do away with an habit?. I think it-s an individual thing. Once you have reached that stage that u believe in the inner recesses of your mind that you may have enjoyed smoking a bit too much, then I guess you get up and walk away from it and keep on walking.Never look back.
. When you started smoking you bought the cigarettes, now you stop buying cigarettes. That should be the -absolutely best way.- Ignore the withdrawal symptoms. There are many other ways to quit smoking, ask others that have quit to share, what worked best for them, to keep them smoke free!
I-m a smoker who hasn-t been able to quit. 2 things that I have never tried that have worked for some other people i know are hypnotizm and some prescription from your doctor. i forget what its called. But I haven-t had much luck with gum, patch, cold-turkey, laser, ect.
to stop smoking you should do it abruptly, and not gradual. have lots of candies or mints at hand, in case you crave.
You need to stop smoking!
You can try to buy Stop Smoking products, like a Zero Nicotine Patch.
See it here..

What happened to your body when you quit smoking? -

I quit 10 years ago after smoking for 33 years. My body started acting normal. I could walk without huffing and puffing, my blood pressure and heart beat went way down. My appetite kicked in so I had to be careful what I ate, but that soon adjusted. My hair did not stink, my closet did not stink. All in all it has been great.
SOme will say they put on weight. I give that no credence. Like me they were weak to begin with, smoking that is. So they were too weak to keep the pounds off.
When I quit I remember my head feeling like it would explode. So, I highly recommend to anyone to ween off. Decreasing the amount monthly, weekly, daily, and by the quit date.
You might sweat alot going through withdrawals, and feel like nothing is satisfying you, you will have no food cravings, and feel flu like. This is the body-s way of detoxifying. I would recommend maybe an anti-depressant before quitting so you will be able to sleep, because withdrawal interrupts sleep. Get plenty of excersize and eat really good, change your drink and other patterns until you feel comfortable bringing some things back in.
So, your going through flulike symptoms, anxiety, and sleep withdrawal.
Excersize will help you physically and mentally.
Focus on the proactive part- health, save money, you will gain so much mental clarity and most important TIME.

Good luck!
Lot-s of good things. starting as soon as 2 hours after you last cigarette. lower blood pressure, increased respiration... not to mention missing that smell, the yellow teeth. being able to make fun of smokers, while at the same time tell them -hey i used to smoke too, you should quit, it will change your life- i hate hearing that. what else.... oh smokes are what 5 dollars a pack now, ridiculous. You lower your chance for mouth, throat and lung cancers. smoking is also a major cause of heart disease. I guess the impact it has on your circulation facilitates the buildup of plaque on your arterial walls greatly increasing the chance for heart attack (leading cause of death for men and women in America... in fact heart disease kills more people than all forms of cancer combined) or even stroke. what is bad about quitting smoking. 2 things, 1 food will taste better so you will gain weight. 2 sweet sweet nicotine, the most addictive drug we know (yes, even more addictive than heroin, though withdrawals thankfully are not as bad)
well, i got a horrible cough 2 days later, i almost thought i had bronchitis. and my skin has broken out terribly. i-ve been a non-smoker for 2 weeks now.
at first i felt down, so i started working out. One year later, i-m healthier than i-ve been in 10 yrs and i feel great. I still get cravings when i-m drunk around other smokers but for the most part i feel great.
My body felt better and my lungs washed themselves out. The best part of it was I saved over $300.00 a month.
Oh, it just shriveled up and my liver bit me.
If you were a chain smoker or an addicted then your body will feel pain but for some while. After that you will find yourself and your body apparently strong and way out from something polluted.

Anybody know anything about Chantix quit smoking Rx? -

Anybody know anything about Chantix quit smoking Rx? -

Heard about it from some friends it worked for. Heard it had some potentially scary side effects (graphic nightmares, severe nausea). Also heard it had been taken off the market due to increased suicides. Ordered it anyway. Any input greatly appreciated.
I smoked for 30 years. I have tried several different ways to quit over the years. The only thing that has ever worked for me was the Chantix. I took the months supply and haven-t touched a cig since. I do not crave cigarettes. They do not put nicotine into your system so it really cuts the desire. I didn-t have any adverse side affects at all. One thing you must do! You really have to have the desire to quit. Good luck
Well my mom took it to quit smoking and I think she only had strange dreams. Her brother also took it to quit but it took him waaaay longer to quit than her. She smoked for 40 years and is now smoke free for 3 years. She defiantly wasn-t nauseated when she took it. Hope this gives you some insight

i remember now the nauseating side effect was only at the idea of smoking a ciggarette. this is how the pill works. makes it to where when you smoke one it taste horrible and makes you feel off.

P.S My boyfriend and I both quit cold turkey no pills. But we are young and he smoked for i think 10 years and i smoked for 7 years.
I was trying to quit smokig and My doctor prescribe me chantax this week. I haven-t yet bought it but if it is that risky he wouldn-t have prescribe for me. I first used the patch but it didn-t help me that is why he I wanna use chantax. But now I have questions too since it might increased suicide. I don-t wanna kill my self.
I haven-t heard anything good about it so far. My wife and I started using the nicotine gum to try to quit, been on it for over 6 months now. We were amazed to find that you buy it at flea markets for around $5 to $15 a box. When you have to pay the $50 and $60 they want in the stores for a box you start thinking.............. wow, if I have to spend that much I-d rather be buying cigarettes! Good luck on quitting!
My cousin used it and he still smokes. It was more of a social thing for him.

On the other hand it worked for my grandma, but she did get severe nausea. She also has high anxiety while on the drug.
Have heard it works was going to try it myself... but now this information maybe not. I know I didnt try it because insurance does not cover it. Good Luck!!!
sounds like a cool drug, which street do i go for it? I can go for some nightmares.
no

I just started using the patch to quit smoking on 5/2/08. Today I am having some severe anxiety/panic attacks -

Has anyone else experienced this?
I used the patch about five years ago. I had smoked for 5 years, about a pack or more a day. I started with the highest dose and followed the directions. If you were smoking less, you maybe need to lower the dose. I know I was nauseas and a little depressed. For a while there, I was cutting straws and -fake smoked- with them, because that was part of the addiction. My hand was just used to it. I still to this day have cravings, but I-ve fought them. I tried to smoke twice on the patch...bad idea, I threw up. Just try lowering your patch does and see if that helps. It may not hurt to see your doctor too! Good luck to you and I hope you-re successful with this! You-re doing a great thing!
Is it possible that you started with too strong of a patch? Maybe the amount of nicotine you are getting from the patch is actually MORE than you were getting from smoking? That would cause your symptoms. I would call a pharmacist and discuss it with them.
NIcotine withdrawal can cause anxiety. Too much nicotine in the patch can cause nervousness. Hard to know what is causing your symptoms.

But hang in there! You-re doing the RIGHT THING!!
I haven-t tried the patch, but I-ve tried the gum. It could just be nicotine withdrawal.
this is a withdrawl symptom, not related to the patch.
I just started using the patch to quit smoking on 5/2/08. Today I am having some severe anxiety/panic attacks -

How does one effectively quit smoking? -

How does one effectively quit smoking? -

i have tried twice and the first time i quit it lasted just about a month or os...then the second time around 3 days..i-ve been smoking for 3 years now and im only 19..turing 20 on july 26..which is an hour away..hahaha!
You have to remember that quitting smoking is a test of mental fortitude and will beyond all else. You can quit, but you won-t quit until you actually do it. That is of course the hard part, but no one said it was going to be easy.

First off, only very determined individuals can quit on their own, most people aren-t -very determined individuals- so I advise you have a bunch of friends and family to support you for this.

Second, avoid smoking all together, don-t go to bars where they smoke, don-t go to liquour stores, don-t look at the cartons at the grocery counter.

Third, one mistep will send you tumbling to the bottom again. If you break your resolve even once, you are highly likely to fail. Just like exercise, consistency is key. You can never -Have just one to calm my nerves.- If you do you will probably -Have just one more to calm your nerves.- Later and be hooked as before.

Remember that smoking is a addiction and that it will be easier to resist once your body gets it out of your system.
it-s a commitment you have to make with yourself. Remind your self of all the nasty effects it has...
happy birthday... to you and to me ;D.
i think it-s something in your mind, that works like a key. i smoked for almost 10 years, in the last time i was feeling more and more guilty for it. And i stopped in one day. I simply did not buy cigarettes anymore...
Just think, and ask yourself...are you an intelligent, independent person? Do you, and no one else, have the control over yourself? If you answer with -yes...- - you are lying. You are depending on a small, stinky cigarette, that damages your health and even the health of your future child, it takes years for the body to reconstruct itself, if it happens at all.
You are not just depending, you are making something incredibly stupid, endanger yourself and others, and paying even for it. Think about it... i did a lot, and i quit it. I wish you good luck... in life and in becoming independent!
Be the boss of your habits, not opposite.
me and u got the same birthday and i just quit. COld turkey - really no other way of going about it. I dont think the gums or patches work but you can give them a try maybe they work fors ome people. Some people also try hypnotism or there is some medicine that the doctor can give you to help get over it. You just gotta keep your mind occupied and not htink of it.
i-ve dished this answer to at least 5 people here:

-the easy way to quit smoking- by allen carr. read it. it really works and is quite cheap to buy. myself and about eight people i know all read it about 4 years ago and we-re all still off them.
no pills, no patches, no weird cigarette substitues. you read the book, follow one or two very simple and easy instructions and quit.
believe me, if i could quit, ANYONE can!! Good luck.
U can picture a disgusting image every time u have the urge to smoke.. Nicotine gums, no sweet candies
Tips for Quitting:
1.Identify the times when you reach for a cigarette out of habit.
2.Change your daily routine so that you avoid situations that trigger smoking.
3.Avoid people who smoke and situations that are conductive to smoking during the first few weeks.
4.Make a list of the reasons you want to quit smoking for, post it around the house, and read it when you feel like smoking.
5.Chew sugarless gums, suck on sugarless candy, or munch on carrot sticks or other healthy snacks when you feel a desire for cigarettes.
6.Drink plenty of water.
7.Avoid alcohol, coffee, teas and colas for a while because these substances often stimulate the craving for tobacco.
8.Exercise frequently.
9.Think in terms of quitting for a few minutes, than an hour, and then a day, saying things to yourself like, -I choose not to smoke during this hour.- or, - I have to do this only one day at a time.-
10.Take deep breaths to aid relaxation when the craving to smoke gets strong.
11.Brush your teeth often to remove tobacco residue.
12.Stop buying cigarette by the carton; buy them by the pack instead.
13.Set a final target date for being tobacco-free and stick with it.
14.Make a ceremony out of the last cigarette, and declare your intentions to family and friends.
15.Get rid of smoking reminders, such as ashtrays, matches, and lighters.
16.Plan rewards for yourself each time you resist lighting up.
17.Become aware of improvements in how you feel, in your sense of smell and taste, and in how you look.
18.Get positive reinforcements and support from nonsmoking friends.
19.If you relapse, or go back to smoking, know that you are not failures and that you can try to quit again.
20.Think about all the benefits of being smoke-free.

Nonsmoking means:
1.Being able to take a deep breath.
2.Tasting food and having the full sense of smell.
3.Having good endurance during physical activity.
4.Using money for other things.
5.Preventing bad breath and having a clean mouth.
6.Unstained teeth and fingers.
7.Having hair and clothes that smell fresh.
8.Being free from addiction to nicotine.
9.Reducing the risks of heart disease, cancer, and leading respiratory diseases.
10.Taking pride that you are part of a health-conscious no-smoking movement.
mind over matter and get something to chew on!
Keep trying, it might work at some time, I hope.
by dying.
First Happy Birthday.

I us to smoke for 30 some years and tried to quit on my own a few times. All times were failures. (For ME) You may succeed though. Medical reports say some people take 3-4 tries before it sticks.

I have been smoke free for over 3 Years now. What helped me was my doctor prescribed Wellbritin.
It-s a medication originally used for depression, but they found many people quit smoking while on it. Now it is prescribed to help stop smoking. IT WORKED FOR ME!!

Once done and free of smoking You no longer need to take the medication.

I tried the nicorette gum and patches before. They actually made my smoking worse. And my nerves then were frazzled ALL the time.

Good luck in what ever you try.
And should you fail, just try something else till you find one that works for you.
It-s tough... I-ve tried and failed myself many times. I-ll quit and then someone will do something that pisses me off and I-ll want to have one again. I try and quit when I go on vacation or something. Unfortunately that doesn-t come around too often.
Latest medical researches proved that it is better to suddenly cut smoking for ever, don-t stop gradually.

Use nicotine gum if needed, and stay away from friend who smoke, and
pray to God to help you because you want to help yourself.

God be with you. ;)
You have to have your mind set on quitting everything else is superfluous.
Before starting to quit (!), you have to accept to quit.

I think the best is to change habits related to smoking : taking a walk after a meal instead of smoking, eating veggies to keep your fingers and mouth busy, etc.
Mark Twain said, -Quitting smoking is easy. I-ve done it a thousand times.-

How to Quit

Smokers often say, -Don-t tell me why to quit, tell me how.- There is no one right way to quit, but there are some key elements in quitting smoking successfully. These 4 factors are crucial:

1) making the decision to quit
2) setting a quit date and choosing a quit plan
3) dealing with withdrawal

Alright, it took you awhile to get the hang of it; it will take awhile to quit. There is a wellbutrin pill that will help or the patch. Just remember to take it in baby steps and never give up. From what I understand though, the cravings will not go away.
Stop! Stop! Stop!, I smoked two pks a day for 42 years and quit cold turkey over 4 years ago and I now pay for my foolishness. I have diabetes, COPD and congestive heart failure. So Stop the Madness and quit while you are young. Here is how I did it:

1. I told everyone I knew I was quitting (peer pressure)

2. I avoided areas where people gathered to smoke (breaks at work etc.)

3. I took walks whenever I had the urge to smoke.

4. Every day that passed I told someone that another day had gone by without smoking (personal gratification) and pretty soon it was a week, a month, a year and now going on 5 years.

5. YOU HAVE TO REALLY WANT TO QUIT!!!!

Good Luck and please give it your best for your own sake and that of your friends and family.
I don-t know!
make a promise to dear one.
Get a hobby that distracts you, some take up sewing or knitting but take up something that you know will interest you and that you won-t quit. Hope I helped and good luck.
I-m going on my fourth week. Its still hard sometimes. But I t stay active,An think positive. I Ride my bike alot an run around alot with my 2 year old dog. So in general i think more about my health @42 An also the money I-m saving, those 2 thing rite there are huge. Put them down rite now an don-t look back. Email me back if you need more help good luck Bobby

You effectively quit, and know that to be the case, when you do not smoke any more.
Just put them down.

Quit COLD TURKEY!
I wish I knew. My husband quit for 3 months, now he is slowing starting to smoke again. Its really tuff to quit. I wish I knew the answer myself. Have you tried the gum/patches? They sometime aid you along. I wish you luck..
My friend is using this successfully in his third week. It has an 80% success rate. He is jazzed about it and all his friends are bumming his patches. Please consider this natural method.

http://www.nicotinenomore.com/

if you can stop for a month, then it really is about the weakness of your mind. you-ve got to simply think it through. think about all the bad things you will suffer from smoking at such a young age. how about having a hole in your neck by the time your 40.
You MUST WANT to be a nonsmoker.
If you light one up, you are not a nonsmoker.
Ask for a drug called Zyban/Welbutrin, for many people it will make you ill when you smoke, and this acts as a deterrent by making the act of smoking undesirable. You could also try nicotine patches and chewing ***, but the success rate on these is lower.
the best way is just not to do it... you have more willpower than you think. See yourself starting to put a cigarrette in your mouth? take it out. its pretty simple. dont give in to temptation

Heres an easy way. At whatever frequency you would normally buy cigarettes, put however much they cost aside. when you feel like smoking, look at all the money you saved by not buying them and get yourself something that you want. say you buy a pack a day. depending on where you live, thats anywhere from 30-40 bucks a week extra at 1 pack a day. id like that much extra money laying around
First, You have to really want to quit. (If you don-t, then nothing you do will be effective or long lasting.)

Second, You just have to stop now. (No saying, -I will stop when I finish this pack.- Or -I will quit after this weekend.-)

Third, Just be a quitter. (What-s easier than just not doing something. You have to adopt the attitude that you are now a non-smoker, not an ex-smoker)

How can I quit smoking without expensive pills/patches? -

I have been smoking for 4 years and 8 months so far. I have been wanting to quit for the past few months now, and going to turkey just will not do it for me. I am thinking I just need a stimulant to use to overcome this addiction.

I was thinking about coffee? Would that be enough stimulant for me to quit smoking? Please provide your input!
Trust me, you doesn-t have to spend a single penny to quit smoking. What you need a STRONG WILL POWER which only works rather than any thing else. Just be strong and also learn to say NO to smoking and move away if some one is smoking near you or just ask them politely not to smoke in front of you.

When you have urge to smoke, just keep yourself busy in watching television, reading magazines / news paper or any thing which you find interesting. Drink cold water and can use chewing gum.

Remember one thing... -There is nothing impossible if we have strong will power to reach our goals in life-

It affects health and obviously, smoking cigarettes is dangerous to your health. Not only its not good for you but for others too. Those who smokes are called SMOKERS and those who inhale are called PASSIVE SMOKERS.Passive or involuntary smoking occurs when the exhaled and ambient smoke from one person-s cigarette is inhaled by other people. Passive smoking involves inhaling carcinogens, as well as other toxic components, that are present in secondhand tobacco smoke.

What is smoking?
Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke of burning tobacco encased in cigarettes, pipes, and cigars. Casual smoking is the act of smoking only occasionally, usually in a social situation or to relieve stress. A smoking habit is a physical addiction to tobacco products.

Everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue), organ damage, and heart disease. It can shorten your life by 10 years or more; and that the habit can cost a smoker lots of money every year.

A cigarette contains acetylene (fuel used in welding), cyanide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide, all of which are harmful chemicals. These chemicals are also used as poison. Many of the chemicals in cigarettes are actually poisons that can kill in high enough doses. Nicotine, the most common ingredient in cigarettes, is more addictive than heroine and ranked nicotine ahead of alcohol and cocaine in terms of dependence. Nicotine triggers the smoker-s brain to be more efficient in processing information. Furthermore, nicotine also reduces anxiety and induces euphoria. Researches have also shown that nicotine stimulates alertness and arousal, and sedation and relaxation based on the dose of nicotine intake. These effects of nicotine, though, do not outweigh the harmful effect of nicotine addiction, which is lung cancer, and possibly other ailments, which will all eventually lead to death.

Each time a smoker lights up, that single cigarette takes about 5 to 20 minutes off the person-s life.

Smokers not only develop wrinkles and yellow teeth, they also lose bone density, which increases their risk of osteoporosis. Smokers also tend to be less active than nonsmokers because smoking affects lung power.

The consequences of smoking may seem very far off, but long-term health problems aren-t the only hazard of smoking. Nicotine and the other toxins in cigarettes, cigars, and pipes can affect a person-s body quickly.

Smokers experience many of these problems:
Bad skin. Because smoking restricts blood vessels, it can prevent oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin — which is why smokers often appear pale and unhealthy. An Italian study also linked smoking to an increased risk of getting a type of skin rash called psoriasis.

Bad breath. Cigarettes leave smokers with a condition called halitosis, or persistent bad breath.

Bad-smelling hair and clothes . The smell of stale smoke tends to linger — not just on people-s clothing, but on their hair, furniture, and cars. And it-s often hard to get the smell of smoke out.

Reduced physical performance. People who smoke usually can-t compete with nonsmoking peers because the physical effects of smoking (like rapid heartbeat, decreased circulation, and shortness of breath) impair sports performance.
Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Smoking affects the body-s ability to produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and ligaments, will heal more slowly in smokers than nonsmokers.

Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they-re just around people who smoke). Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weight often light up instead of eating, their bodies lack the nutrients they need to grow, develop, and fight off illness properly.

Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything — more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live!

So have a smoke free and healthy life and also encourage and teach others for the same so that may help few lives which gives you lots of blessings and happiness which can not be expressed in words!!!

Good luck !!!
Joshua H-s response is right on. Chantix is currently the frontrunner and proven way to quit smoking assuming that you are aware of its suicidal effects which can be overcome by simply cutting the daily dosage by half. It-s one of many smoke cessation programs which has a substantial track record of success. Based on your smoking record of 4 years plus at $1,500 per year for a pack a day habit, you have already consumed $6,000 worth of smokes. So the initial cost of taking Chantix [which is around $350.00 total] is a bargain program when compared to what you are going to spend in future smokes.

Good luck!
I began smoking at the age of 15 and finally quit for good at the age of 57 (a year ago), when I was at a pack a day. Even tho- all the experts say you have to go cold turkey, I think that just increases the craving. This is how I did it. Everytime I wanted a cigarette, I only smoked half of it. So, I immediately cut my intake in half. After a few weeks of doing that (gives your body time to adjust to less nicotine), I would only take about 4 puffs, put it out and save it for the next craving. After a few weeks of that, I went to 2 puffs, then one puff (where one cigarette could last me a day or two). My body gradually got used to doing without the nicotine and I got to a point where I said, -when this pack is done, I-m not buying anymore-. That was a year ago. Recently, I stayed with my son, who smokes, and took a drag off his cigarette. I didn-t like the taste and it hurt my throat. If I can do it, you can do it, because I loved smoking!!!
You are right in thinking you need to replace the smokes...I just think replacing them with another stimulant is not the best idea. I swapped the smokes for regular sugarfree chewing gum, bottles of water and going for walks. All 3 combined managed to keep me rather sane and able to quit the nasty smelly habit. 3 years later and I havent slipped up...I very rarely linger when I smell a cigarette but its very rare...

The first 3-5 days are the hardest...once you get past that you are on the home stretch and its relatively easy.

You can do it...and you can certainly do it without expensive patches and pills...
You can also try some rehab program which can easily help you to quit smoking. Even I was a smoker and it was difficult for me to quit smoking until i tried a rehab program. I have now stopped smoking and it is not much expensive. See if this helps!
I have tried just about every way to quit smoking possible and only one thing has ever worked for me. It gives you the nicotine you crave and none of the harmful chemicals or cancer. The best part is, you use it like a cigarette, only instead of smoke it-s water vapor..For me it felt just like smoking and really helped me. Oh and it costs the same as cigarettes per month and much less for some depending on the brand you smoked before.
Get your hands on the book, -The No Nag, No Guilt, Do It Your Own Way Guide to Quitting Smoking- by Tom Ferguson, MD. I know it-s a lousy title, but it-s a very helpful book and an easy read. It-s been around a long time, so you won-t have to pay much.
Your doctor might prescribe a stimulant like Ritalin to help you get over the urge to smoke. The only problem with this is that most people tend to smoke when they get anxious -- and stimulants make you anxious.

I think you should try a nicotine replacement rather than a stimulant.

Either way -- good luck to you!
No, a stimulant will not have the desired effect, not one that wouldn-t be worse for you than smoking, anyway. You need the proper meds, preferably Chantix. If you give up smoking, it will save you money in the long run.
cold turkey is not they way to go...to hard on the body and mind. just slowy quit...just cut down on the smoking a little each day until you are down to none. set a day and mark it on the calender....set a date where you will have your last smoke.
okay i have been smoking about the same time as well and i quit they way i did it was i joined the army. lol. you can-t smoke for half a year anyways so yeah if your interested join the army.
If you really have the desire and most of all, the will power, you can quite cold turkey. You can do it. It-s a good test of your will power. lol
look at a picture of your lungs. and think about your possible death, not that that would be a good enough reason (jkjkjk) hmmm, a new addiction is what you need. how about punk rock???
Hi. I found a great site where you can find how to quit smoking. I tried it and it works. Here is the link
http://www.quitsmokingrightnow.com/
Must try it.
I-ve proved in many Filipinos that chewing a bubble gum is they way of preventing themselves to smoke. And try to buy different flavors to enjoy it!
Would patches be any more expensive than cigarettes? Even if they are at least they aren-t killing you slowly.
I agree, going to Turkey is a bit extravagant to quit smoking. Try drinking Vodka. It cures all.
Substitute weed for the cigarettes.
Duct tape your mouth shut.

I have about 4 or 5 cigarettes left, and do not want to buy another pack. Does anyone have any ideas? Help, it-s getting expensive!
I have a briliant idea, but promise you will follow.....

Buy a fresh packet of cigerette.

Then take out all the cigerrettes from and choose one stick

Insert it in you asshole completely.

Schuffle all of them and put them back in packet.

Carry the box in your pocket.

Just remind what you have done before taking a smoke.

Do not buy any packet before it is empty.

HAPPY smoking................................
Aggh, I knew there would be some smartass comment on this.
I hate smoking, so kudos to you for actually asking how to stop and looking for a reasonable answer. If this person hates smoking so much, they should be glad that you-re asking how to stop.
I hope you manage to get there : )

Chantix. It can only be prescribe by a doctor. It-s expensive, but TRUST me it is worth it. I smoked for five years. I know it-s not long, but I i tried patches and the gum with no success. Although Chantix can be dangerous for some people, for many it is not. See the Chantix website for more research. Only thing that worked for me within three days after it was prescribed. Hope that helped a little.
I recommend cutting down gradually until your quit date. I did this. I cut down to half a pack. I did this for three months. I smoked by the puff, not by the cigarette. I took only the amount of nicotine that was necessary to satisfy my urge to smoke and put the rest of the cigarette out.

After doing this for three months I quit cold turkey.

Now I-m eating more candy to distract me but its been 4 months. I have urges but they don-t last more than a second or two. If they-re lasting more than that then you-re concentrating on the cigarette. Don-t do it. Concentrate on something else.
Hi geri..

grab ahold of a support group, that will help you more than anything.. there are a number of voice meetings on the internet daily!!!

Yep, chew gum or use toothpicks. Every time you want a cigarette put a piece of a pencil in your mouth to imitate a cigarette. Here-s a site with a list of sites for people trying to quit. It may help. ----

No easy way to it, smoking addiction, unlike a heroin addiction is purely a mind thing, not a physical addiction. As stupid as it may sound you just have to use mind over matter
The nicorette active stop programme is really good. Provides a lot of help and support, and you can either chew gum or use will power. I bought some gum and found that I didn-t even need it!

I quit smoking for 3 days and like an idiot smoked yesterday.. Now today I feel like crap. It takes 72 hours? -

to remove nicotine from your system, and I was doing fine and screwed it up.

How can I get this nicotine out of my system so I can start feeling better?

FAST!
Quit again. Iv-e quit now for ten months 2 of those using chantix which works great. I still have days i want one after all this time. It gets easier though.
Try to quit again. I don-t know about everyone else but i quit a month ago and i still get cravings. Although it is so much easier to say NO now. Try a gum or patch to overcome the Habit of smoking. It usually takes about three days for all nicotine to get out of your system and about three weeks before the chance of you lighting one up again reduces. Take it one day at a time.

Good Luck with it.
Smoking is a horrible habit. I quit a 2 pack a day habit using an electronic cigarette. They are amazing. The last time I had a traditional cigarette was an hour before I got my e-cig in the mail. I have not had the desire to smoke a traditional cigarette ever since. They don-t stink at all and you can smoke them indoors at bars and restaurants. I feel a million times better now. Here is a link to the company I buy from. They have one of the best reputations in the e-cig world and great prices. Good luck on your journey to a healthier you.

The nicotine will leave at its own pace, nothing you can do except to go through the withdrawal and remember not to slip again, since as you know it takes just one to bring back all the symptoms!

Is there any link between quitting smoking and heart disease.? -

I know smoking is a cause for heart disease. I know 430,000 people die every year in America due to smoking related disease, heart being the major one. I know smoking is too bad and it has to be even banned like cannabis or any other drug. I know smoking is dangerous extraordinaire. And yet, I read somewhere smokers who quit smoking may develop serious heart disease within 2 years fromn the date they stopped smoking. Is it true?
There may have been a study on this, I haven-t seen it. The problem is that these people may have had the same complications if they continued to smoke. It might not mean that quitting is bad for you, it might be that quitting too late is bad for you.

BTW: I-ve been smoke free for 2 weeks.
Heart disease usually is caused by a build up in the arteries. Heart attack can result because the blockage restricts the amount of oxygenated blood that gets through the heart. Without oxygen, the heart does not function properly. The cause of blockages? Poor diet. Control your diet and exercise.

Smoking can lead to a NUMBER of terrible illnesses. Applaud yourself for quitting. Your lungs have a number of stretchy tissues that enable them to expand. Smoking DESTROYS them. While they may be able to heal, sometimes people smoke for so long that they don-t have TIME to heal. Living with any type of COPD such as Emphesyma or Chronic Bronchitis is not fun. Emphesyma causes the alveoli (where carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged) to collapse and complications follow.

Stop smoking.
Learn to eat healthy.
Be active.
Chances are those people would have died even sooner had they not quit! Every cardiologist will tell you that one of the most important things you should do for your heart if you smoke is to quit NOW!

Of course it-s easier said than done, but if you-re worried about your health, it-s a must.

Some help can be found here
http://www.smart-heart-living.com/quit_s…
in terms of reasons to quit along with some resources that might be helpful.

Good luck!
The smoking hazards are over exagerated,, over smoking is injurious like every otherthings.. Once stoped smoking the effects heal.
It-s very possible but not because they quit. The effects of smoking will stay with you for years. It dissipates over time but doesn-t just disappear when the cigarettes do.
smoking does cause heart decease and its been proved time after time not to mention other complications your body does heal its self but it all depends how long a person has been smoking for

Why cant I quit smoking, what can I try? -

You will quit smoking when you SINCERELY make up your mind that you will be a non-smoker. Once your mind is really made up, you will quit. Also, stop asking -why can-t I quit?- The question should be -How can I quit?- It-s not a question of why because, in fact you really can do it. You just need the method.
Eliminate the word TRY from your vocabulary.
There is no such thing.

How long after you quit smoking should you feel the benefit? -

I quit smoking two weeks ago (smoker for 17 yrs) and ever since I have woke up in the morning with a sore throat. I have also put on a lot of weight ( about a stone) despite eating healthy snacks (grapes, melon etc). I am starting to feel any health benefits I have gained from stopping have been undone by the extra weight I now carry. How long will it be before I actually feel any benefits from stopping ? Any ideas on how to boost my morale and feel good about quitting?
first of all Congradulations on packing in smoking.i packed in 21 years ago i can remember feeling awful at the time in fact i felt worse when i packed in than i did when i was smoking i had a really bad cough for weeks after i went to see my doctor he said it was all the chemicals in the tobacco that was clearing out of my body i was pregnant at the time i packed in so i put on weight anyway.keep up the good work watch what you eat sounds like you are being sensible in what you are eating anyway try to get regular exercise.it may not seem it right now but in a few weeks even months you will feel so much better GOOD LUCK

Why quit smoking before surgery? -

Why quit smoking before surgery? -

I have scheduled plastic surgery. Doctor has asked i quit smoking 1 month prior. All articles on internet concerning my specific surgery (tummy tuck) have said 2 weeks including doctor web sites. I want to know if it is safe to smoke until that 2 weeks prior or is the one month a new time frame. I know i need to quit for good but right now please focus on the question at hand.
The most likely reason they want you to quit smoking before surgery is because smoking causes constriction of the blood vessels. This will cause problems with healing and may even cause the procedure to fail if a decent blood supply is required. If I were in your situation, I would certainly heed your actual doctor-s request.
The one-month recommendation is to give you a little fudge factor in your quitting. The first day, then the next two days of quitting are toughest. The next toughest time is at about two weeks--so you-d be due to cheat at the worst possible time--right before surgery.

If you quit a month early, have weak moment and smoke a couple cigarettes at two weeks and quit again, you-ll be better off than if you quit and had that moment of weakness two or three days before surgery.
Smoking can cause blood clots. If you are smoking around your surgery, you have a VERY HIGH RISK of blood clots (which can kill you quickly).

I know you may not want to quit, but check this out...

I know this may sound weird, but Bananas can help people trying to give up smoking. The B-6 and B-12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body-s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

So try eating some bananas :)

Some of the addiction is oral and normalacy... when you normally have cigarettes, that-s when you crave them... one of my friends would always have a ballpoint pen with her ... she would hold it in her hand like she would when she was a smoker... and if she had the oral craving, she would chew on the pen... sounds weird, but worked for her :)
You are safe to smoke up till the day of surgery. The reason that they ask you to stop smoking is to help lower your blood pressure and help you to heal faster. Smoking will make your recovery time longer.
quit because smoking kills

After the death of Allen Carr I have finally decided to spend some of my free time to help other people BASH THE WEED. I have made a real commitment for the new year to help other people give up as I have.

Due to smoking in 2006 we lost two dear friends and also two of my close family have died of cancer related illnesses in the past. To lose Allen Carr this year was a horrible loss as he has done so much for the cause, he was a titan in the war against the horrible habit.

Also new laws in 2007 will stop smoking in public places in the UK so gives people a real reason to stop. All profits of the website will be used to fund charities and further the products and development of the website.

My goal is to help as many people stop smoking as I can.

So how do you think I could do it?

Phillip

That is very nice of you wanting to help people stop smoking. I am a smoker and frankly i wish people would put more effort into banning all the adverts on tv showing what fun it is drinking. In all honesty i believe more people get attacked, killed, drunk drivers and aggressiveness are caused by drinking. I have never felt aggro or wanting to beat my hubby to a pulp when i smoke. But go for it. I wish you well, but try doing something about getting the alcohol adverts banned as well. :)))
Well fug me Julia finally says something that makes sense...who is Allen Carr?

I will need all the help i can get, but i don-t see how you can help me besides handcuffing my hands behind my back. smokers all know it is bad for their health, but constant nagging and adverts on the tv do not help. for me they just seem patronising and childish.
We know its bad, but it is an addiction that needs treatment.
I-m a smoker. I visited your website. With the greatest respect, you need to think again about your approach. Smokers aren-t stupid and ignorant. We know smoking causes cancer, strokes and everything else you mention but clearly, it doesn-t make us stop. Allen Carr, as you rightly say was a titan in the war, but you are no Allen Carr. The fact that you call smoking a -habit- proves you don-t know anything. Allen Carr really knew his stuff. He concentrated on the psychological aspects of addiction. His book was loaded full of theories and thoughts that really do make smokers think. All you-ve done is listed a load of diseases that will stress out smokers. And what do smokers do when they feel stressed?? That-s right. They smoke.
i honestly think that you could not stop a person smoking. they can only do it themselfs once they face up to the true cost to there lifes and fanancialy.
Unfortunatley we all have free will right? No, im sorry my friend but we are not forced to smoke, it is a choice. i personally hate smokers. it is gross, my father quit and it was for the best. unfortunatley cigarettes are like any other addiction people start, only they have the ability to stop. good looking out though. i know what it feels like to loose someone close to you becuase of something so iewyuck!!!
GOOD LUCK!
Most young people start smoking because they feel it improves their image. I-d build a campaign that portrays smoking as the most nerdish and naff thing a kid could do. The danger is that marketing in this space can be terribly unpredictable and you can sometimes create an opposite effect to the one intended.

Good luck though!!
shoot them
If you can afford to hand out free nicotine alternatives to people you target, that-ll help them on their way.
Those things are so expensive, it-s no wonder lots of people are put off... They cost more than the cigarettes themselves!
That is a great endeavour, well done you, and good luck!
You can-t.
But tell them this, my story;

I stopped smoking two weeks ago, it-s the best thing i-ve ever done. I feel so much healthier, so much happier, I regret wasting 6 years of my life inhaling that filthy, putrid smoke. I-ll never smoke again, ever.
So long as it is intended as help, with their willing cooperation, that-s a great idea. But the instant it turns to coercen it becomes tyranny. Just like anything else, noone has the right to force another to conform to their beliefs, no matter how well meaning your actions may be.

Try something different, try earning their cooperation through education. You-ll get a lot further than if you try to force them to do what you want and you will not be walking down the path of dictatorship.
You could join other charites and offer your work volunterially, you could set up your own web site, and you could write a little nte to that prime minister of ours, do some marching outside no 10. I will back you up! good on ya mate x
I think the problem is people can only properly quit if they really want to or have a reason close to their heart. I can-t see how anyone can help others give up unless they wish to do so, the only thing you could do is offer support, and arrange for other people quitting to be able to talk to each other and offer tips and advice.....the rest is down to the individual.
Why bother? Every smoker is aware of the risks that he or she takes.
Smoking generates tax revenue and materially shortens lives mainly at a time when the smoker has given up or is about to give up work. Health costs are very low compared to revenue generated and pension saved.
If people wish to pay over the odds for a shorted life of smoking why should anyone interfere?
IM TOTALLY WITH YOU- IVE RECENTLY PUT A QUESTION IN MYSELF BOUT THIS.... we should start a massssive campaign... look how unhealthy we all are. xx
