Tell me how you quit smoking. Or any good ideas? -

I-ve been smoking cigarettes for only 3 years, but still feels wayy too long. I-ve tried a million times to just quit cold turkey, but it is just NOT working. Especially when I drink alcohol or when I am around others who smoke. How-d you quit? Or do you know of any remedies?
hi Silhouette..

yep quitting is a bear, but it is doable.. i smoked for over 40 years, and like you tried repeatedly to quit... using not only, cold turkey, but pills, patches, and other aides..

the good news for me is that i did in fact quit... I have been nicotine free for over 5 years now.. what worked for me when other methods failed, was involvment in a support group..i attend nicotine anonymous meetings, both locallly, and on line... on line voice meetings are as close as your computer..

however you decide to quit good luck, there is simply no wrong way to quit!! its a solid decision!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
I think this is one of your best decisions. You must know what are the advantages of quitting:

This will keep you motivated throughout. My friend was chain smoker and he quit. He use to say, just be mentally strong and you can do it. Here are some tips that helped him:

There-s a video on howcast.com called -how to stop smoking- Type it in the howcast website and you-ll find it. It basically sais to suck on lollypops any time you feel the urge to smoke. Also if you exersize every day your just naturally not as bothered by not smoking.
My mother used this patch, It injected the smoking thing in her, But every day the injection got smaller and smaller, and sooner or later she quit smoking. I don-t know where she got it, Though.
Maybe this article will guilt you into quitting.

Stop smoking old fashioned, super dangerous cigarettes, and switch to electronic cigarettes.

I know it sounds nuts but check it out and see for yourself (link in source)
When you drink alcohol and are around ppl who smoke it is very hard to quit.

What I recommend is still cold turkey. This free website can help you. www.whyquit.com

Im looking for effective ways to help someone quit smoking.? -

my mom has been smoking cigarettes since she was pretty much a kid..and she is so unhealthy, she can barely breath without coughing and sounding disgusting..and she also has lung disease. more than anything..i want her to quit because i fear that she wont be around much longer. any suggestions or methods i can provide or present to her? thank you!
Get her elected President of the USA.

Really, she has to want to quit before any program can work. Let her know your concerns. When my son looked me in the eye and told me to quit because he loved me, I quit the same day. No smoking for 7 years now. But, you have to support whatever happens.
I have a good friend who recently became hooked to the terrible habit. He keeps saying he will stop on that pack, but never does, and always finds an excuse to go have a cigarette. The thing that bothers me is how they have absolutely no benefits at all! Why would someone just do something to harm themselves like that? Like I might as well carry really fattening chocolate bars with me everywhere and eat 15 a day and every time I step outside! It-s so dumb and costs a lot of money. I once saw a good idea to help people to stop smoking. It starts with figuring out how much the smoker smokes a day, and then finding out how much that cost them per day. Once you find that out, find out how much it would cost them per year, and show them what they could buy instead with that money being wasted on cigarettes. Usually it totals up to a few thousand dollars, which could get them a trip to the other side of the world if they really wanted to! Try that method. I hope it helps. If it doesnt, just do what I do, I try to flick the cigarette out of my friends hand or mouth every time I catch him having a smoke lol. I just kinda sneak up and flick it, but it hardly ever falls out, he has an iron grip on the thing I guess lol.
My husband - I quit smoking and we did it by cold turkey. It was the easiest way for me. Harder for my husband. My mother has smoked for like 25 years too and now she is borderline emphasema. If cold turkey isnt an option for her, as everyone has their own way to quit effectivly, there are nicotine patches, nicotine gum - there is even hypnosis. To be honest, i have never personally known anyone to quit without just going cold turkey. My mom has went on the gum - patches for 10 years on and off.
Good luck and i hope your mom can kick this habit.
I quit four years ago; My husband said I didn-t want to quit because I would miss smoking to much. I tried everything and thought I would smoke for the rest of my life. One day my husband heard this web site advertised on the radio and I took a look at it. I made an appointment with the doctor a week later. Smoked my last cigarette before I walked in to his office. I think there is a doctor locate-tor on the web site; otherwise call the number to see if there is doctor in your area. This procedure is alitte pricing but well worth it!
She needs to be educated. There appears to be a correlation between a country-s standard of living, level of education, and income on the one hand, and the number of people who have stopped smoking on the other. The more educated and better informed people are, the more likely they are to stop smoking.

First thing your mom has to want to stop. If she wants to stop she could start by not smoking in the house and car. Another words step outside snow or rain to smoke. Some people suck on hard candy instead of the cigarette.
Hopefully she does something very very very soon. Her health is in danger as you all ready know. Good luck!
A friend of mine quit cold turkey by having his wife basically be the -smokiing cop- to bust his chops if he tried to cheat. He fell off the wagon a time or two, but except for that he quit smoking. His case was a pretty desperate one too. Very poor lungs.
Chantix , It worked for me , I have been smoke free for two years now after having smoked for 30 years. I used to smoke 2 packs per day and now I-ve saved a ton of money. Cigarettes are $7.00 per pack in Albany New York so I-ve saved just over $10,000.00 in two years.

http://www.mytimetoquit.com/content/inde…

if she doesnt want to change she wont. it has to be her call. tell her you want her around and want her to see her grand kids, but there isnt much you can do
i think it-s going to be hard after all those years... as myself, not a smoker, even consider hard to quit...
so, i think effective way is to chew gum or exercise...
but before that, your mom really have to make a commitment not to smoke.
my dad smoked for like a day at age 25 and he stopped after a day cause he tried gum called nicotine gum it tastes like a cigarrete but it isnt bad for you at all. you can get it at walgreens and it works!
anti-smoking-plaster?

and give her something like a cigarette into her hands so she can get used to not having a real cigarette in her hands.

She needs another addiction instead? Perhaps coffee? xD
Im sorry for your mom :(, hope she gets better and quits

Best yet sexy way is....have her start a ******** convention, she-ll forget bout cigarettes ;););)

Hit me up when she does, I need one
check with president obama he is for hope and change and has been very successful in quiting.

have her drink alot of water and chew sun flower seeds.

Make her want to quit for herself not for you.

I want to quit smoking but if i dont smoke i eat,a lot, and i dont want that either, any sugestions,wt can i do? -

i noticed that i need to smoke,to much.If i dont though i take up the time by eating and i dont want to do either but theres so much time now and i dont know what to do.
Keep low calorie snacks around. Dried bananas, apples, carrot sticks etc. Good luck with quitting. Take up a hobby that uses both hand like needle point.
This is how i quit.
First, get nicotine patches, and every week use a slightly smaller patch. Go at your own pace and don-t try to rush it, when i did this system it took 200 days to quit, for others it could be longer.

Here are some of the problems i ran into and how i dealt with them:

1)i missed the relaxing smoke sensation, when the smoke flows out of my mouth, so i go clove ciggaretts witch have even thicker smoke.

2)i made it more difficult because i smoked hookah which has nicotine. Stay away from hooka
First you must decide whether eating more is better or smoking. Obvious answer is eating more Now question arises how to regulate this over eating.Again answer is low calorie food, high fibre food which makes you feel full - lots of fruits.
I have gone through the same experience 15 years back when I gave up smoking totally. I started over eating because the same food was tasting lot better, I was feeling more hungry. Over the time, I shifted to healthier foods. I now feel fit. My coughing - panting when climbing stairs has vanished. Take my advice. Give up smoking immediately. You may not get the urge again..
Chew some gum or suck a sucker when you are wanting to eat something!

Whats the best method to quit smoking? -

ok heather i have had to do this, keep something in your mouth like a peice of gum or hard candy and dont buy the cigarretts no matter what, have a friend help you by giving you an assentive for following through with it, like they will take you out to your fav. resturant or to a movie things like that, also in the end you will realize that you will save TONS of money along the way to buy awsome purses or jewlery for yourself. Trust me it is worth it. GOOD LUCK and god bless
You have to really want to and have lots of support from people around you. So if you fall they-ll pick you back up.
cold turkey.

however, cigarette addiction is partially mental, partially physical. if you are not mentally prepared and ready to quit, you will not quit.

you have to WANT to quit more than you want to smoke.

i smoked a pack a day for years, then quit cold turkey over a year ago. it was easy, because i WANTED to quit.
If you truly want to quit, then you just quit. You make a choice to not buy cigarettes again. Remove all lighters and ashtrays from your house. Hard candy or jawbreakers can help too. This is what I did two years ago and haven-t smoked since.
1.- Never start
2.- Hypnotization
3.- Get pregnant
4.- Have a friend that cares for you and is a doctor examine you and make uo that if you dont quit now youll die in 10 months.
5.- when you feel like smoking substitue it with something better, (candy, excercise, or couples excercise ;))
I used to smoke almost 2 packs a day and tried everything. I found doing it cold turkey was the best for me. It was hard but worked.
The best method is to get a spine and just quit.
The next best method if you won-t sack up is to work with your primary care physician.
First off, you have to WANT to and then I would consider Nicorette Gum. I bought for my husband on eBay as the prices were consderably cheaper than retail and he loves it! He still smokes a few here and there at night time but during the day, in the field at work, he doesn-t smoke at all.
Heather - this depends on the person.

23 years ago, I just got darn tired of spending money for the rising costs of cigs, plus I was weary of losing my breath after climbing a flight of stairs and having ash burns on my shirts.
So, I just quit.
I suppose my brain chemistry didn-t have as many addictive receptors as some people.
And I believe that is key to quitting - what a persons addictive level determines their quitting ability.

You are going to have to find out for yourself what you have the strength to do alone or with support from the patch or other methods.

Good luck!
If you make it, think of the money you-ll save...let alone the health insurance!
try reducing how much u smoke in a day or just cold turkey completely stop, that-s how i did it, goodluck.
stop hanging around wit peeps who smoke, get a new hobbie uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh It makes people stink!!!
used Zypan a prescription drug, haven-t smoked in 15 years
good luck
80% of the people that quit, do it with grit. I did it that way after smoking for 10 years. Here-s how I ATTAINED and KEPT that grit to DO it...

If you remember seeing,-Indiana Jones- there was a scene where he is running from a bolder. The harder he ran the further away the bolder got from him. The harder he ran, the SMALLER it got TO him.

Every day you say no, you get further and further from that temptation. It-s always going to CHASE you, because that-s the way the makers MAKE cigarettes, but as the temptation gets smaller, with every day you say no, you can literally take a non-lit cigarette butt and -put the temptation in it,- step on the butt, and the temptation goes out.
balls

just to WANT to stop.
I-ve heared the best way is cold turkey. They say it-s hard in the first week but then you-re less likely to start back up.

I also know someone who had success with the patch.
Good luck!
Congrats to me, I made 2 years yesterday after 40 years of smoking. I did it cold turkey. Just put it in my mind that I needed to quit when I had a hard time pushing 140 pounds on wheels 50 feet. Now I feel better.
Here-s two VERY helpful suggestions: #1-Tell everyone you know that your quiting on whatever date. That way you will not want to look like a *%!^+#! to your friends by starting up again. #2-This one WILL help you SO much: the craving for a smoke only lasts a couple minutes. Your tough-enough to ride that out! The cravings eventually (quicker than you think) get further apart and then you-ve got it beat! Just REMEMBER the cravings do go away quick! (maybe chew-gum then if you have to)
Cold turkey that way you are not tempted to start agian. And when doing this for about a monthh try to stay away from others who smoke or ask them not to smoke around you. Oh and be sure to keep a lot of gum Good luck and you can do this.
I smoked for 13 years, tried cold turkey and patch, I ended up doing to a Duke University smoking cessation study, and for some reason, that did the trick, what it was;
i had to keep a diary of what i smoked, when and why, I wore a patch that they provided and smoked the cigarettes (my brand) that they provided. No one knew whether the patch or the cigarettes were altered, but it worked, and it worked well, I haven-t smoked in a year. I would call your local Universities and see if they have any similar to that, personally, I think it was having to answer to someone about my behavior, not wanting to disappoint my lab tech, and having to think about what I was doing that helped me.
by not letting cig in your mouth

Hypnosis to quit smoking while on lexapro? -

if i take lexapro 10 mg and on ocasion some nites i take ambien to sleep (but i havent used the ambien 5mg in over a week now) can i still use hypnosis to quit smoking , ive been on lexapro for 2 weeks now.
I cant see why you couldnt use hypnosis, the best bet would be to check with your doctor. But i think they would weigh up any pros and cons and it would be way more benificial to quit smoking!!
Good Luck!
Depends on what you are on lexapro for and why you can-t sleep...
I can-t do hypnosis because I am a thinker (especially when I-m trying to wind down) and I can-t give full concentration for the hypnosis.
can-t offeer advice -- but wishing you the best on dumping
the smokes.
I see no reason that you cant do hypnosis, it has nothing at all to do with these two drugs.

Good Luck
if your taking them simultaneously i would have to say no because im no chemist but i think you added a different variable

beacuse the extra time your sleeping the drug may or may not be working
Wellbutrin is a great pill to stop nicotine addictions AND it can be taken with your lexapro without causing any difficulties, I don-t know about your ambien though...ask the doctor about that but Wellbutrin is really great for trying to quit smoking.

How do you battle depression that starts when you quit smoking? -

I am on anti-depressants to help alleviate the depression, but it keeps getting worse. I finally succeeded in quitting smoking, but I feel worse now than I did for the eleven years that I smoked. I-ve been exercising and eating right to. I just don-t know what else to do.
A cigarette usually helps.
Have lots and lots of sex. That will cure anything! If all else fails, masturbate!

If the antidepressants are not working then see your doc and have him try something else. He has no clue that they are not working well unless you call and tell him.
I heard Wellbutrin will help for both issues..smoking and depression
Congratulations on quitting!!! The first thing I would suggest is to stop taking the anti-depressants. Depression is a natural emotion that you will experience once you quit because the cigarettes have been the one consistent thing that has been with you or has been there for you for 11 years. You have now severed ties with that and it will take some time to cope with that loss. You will need to find a coping mechanism for those times when you feel down and blue. You-re actually on the right track with the exercise. It is one of the best stress and tension relievers. Also, if you have been eating healthier that has a bit to do with the depression because now your body is releasing unhealthy and bad toxins which tend to not only cleanse you from the inside it also has a tendency to stir up emotions. Don-t worry the depression is a natural state. It will pass just be patient with yourself. You-re experiencing a loss so go through the grieving process. Once you-re done you will be amazed how great you-ll feel!!! Best of luck.
That-s wonderful that you quit smoking! And that you are exercising and eating right too. Quitting is not an easy thing to do but you-ve gotten through the worst part. I would tell your doctor you-d like a different anti-depressant. And it may sound weird, but try taking chromium picolinate, if you occasionally still want a cigarette. Only take as much as it says on the bottle though.
Congratulations with your smoking cessation! I-ve just quit them myself.
You need to excercise harder. For some reason you are not excercising hard enough to release your endorphins into the bloodstream. It-s the endorphins that make you feel good.

Also get a plant light bulb and put that in your lamp. Make sure you get at least an hour of sitting under it. Keep it in your mind that these negative feelings are temporary.

Those things ought to help. Good Luck and keep up the fight!
Try adding salmon. tuna or sardines/anchovies to your salads or sandwiches, or taking fish oil capsules each day -- it lifts your mood in no time at all!!!

How to avoid weight gain once you have quit smoking? -

How to avoid weight gain once you have quit smoking? -

I don-t know that I can maintain both my weight and not smoking at the same time. But, I don-t want to gain very much as an adverse side effect, either. Suggestions? Thank you.
Every time you think you are hungry, drink a glass of water and wait thirty minutes. If you-re still hungry for food after that, then eat something. If not, then you just needed water! A lot of the time our bodies need hydration, but we confuse the feeling of thirst for the feeling of hunger. Just another reason so many people are dehydrated.

If you genuinely are hungry for food, but don-t want to eat something at that time, try chewing sugar-free gum instead of eating. Don-t chew gum too often, as you may become afflicted with TMJ, but using it to pacify an oral fixation sparked by years of smoking should do the trick.

Good luck quitting!
Your body-s metabolism slows a bit when you quit smoking, as nicotine raises the metabolism - only slightly. So get going with some exercise - even a walk a day, or some sport, dancing etc.
Also some people replace smoking with food, so arm yourself with healthy stuff and stick to it!
There-s all the advice you need here:

http://www.quitguide.com/smoking-and-wei…

First Congradulations on making one of the most important health changes in your life !!!. When we smoke it raises our blood pressure and heart rate, so when we quit our metabolisim slows down. Therefore you need to try and speed up your metabolism through excercise, so join a health club, walk for half hour everyday. Have low cal snacks such as fresh veggies in the fridge at all times and a very important thing is increase your water intake. The water really helps to detoxify your body of the nicotine. Try to take up a new hobby that keeps your hands busy, and get plenty of rest. Another good idea is to chew sugarless gum till you get over that craving for nicotine.

How do i quit smoking weed? -

I-ve been smoking weed since 6th grade and i-m almost a junior in highschool in the past 4 years the longest i went without weed was a week. need ADVICE!
Weed is not addictive. That-s a fact. So you just have a habit like biting your nails. Except this habit can cause lung cancer, cancer of the esophagus, and more.
Now, it-s just mind over matter. All you need is the WILL to quit, and then a some willpower. Don-t even keep the stuff around. That way you won-t be tempted.
Being naturally high is so much better! WILLPOWER! Mind over matter! You can do it! I know you can.
Bless you! :)
Get a smoking substitute. Weed isn-t addictive, but it also doesn-t cause any kind of cancer, miss nurse. Any cancer associated with smoking weed is caused by rolling it in tobacco paper. However, it is proven that smoking it before the age of 15 can cause developmental damage, which is probably why it-s so hard for you to quit.
This is easy! Just don-t smoke anymore. Same way I quit nicotine. The darn things don-t jump in your mouth and light themselves! It requires a conscious effort to roll and smoke. JUST STOP!
O.o thats a long time idk just try and get a new hobbie 2 replace smoking weed idk try a sport or a game

Help! I quit smoking and gained 45 lbs? -

I-m not eating any more than I used to, but I quit smoking in November and I have gained 45 lbs. Everything I read said that the weight gain from quitting smoking would even out over time, but it hasn-t. I also seem to retain a lot of water, to the point that my weight can fluctuate by 10 lbs overnight. Is there anything I can take to boost my metabolism? And what would help me to quit retaining water?
you probably retain a lot of water because you eat salty foods, so you can cut down the salt in your diet, and to boost your metabolism you should do some cardio right when you wake up in the morning, just something to get your heart pumping, not too much, just like a 2 minute jog in place or something in the morning, everyday, and another thing you could do is eat every 3 hours, but make sure they-re small portions, and drink lots of water, this is because if you dont drink a lot of water your body starts to retain it, its like a survival mechanism
take water pills but make sure you drink alot of water also eat carrots to kept your weight down. stay away from sweets if you can and dont drink so much pop because that will make you retain a lot of water in your body. so water pill and drinking lots of water will help. and no sweets nor pops (coke, pepsi, ect)

Just wanted to know who has quit smoking after smoking 10/20 a day for alot of years, and actually feels relieved to of done it, or did u quit then realize how much you missed it once you stopped. Just wnated to know because I couldn-t imagine stopping smoking unless I fell pregnant, yes money can be an issue but if I wanst spending it on cigarettes i-d be spending it on booze and take aways. any answers are welcome, if you know someone who-s stopped or what ever. Thanks for your answers! x
i smoke anywhere from 10-20 cigerettes a day.. but give up smoking when i fall pregnant everytime..
i do not smoke around my children, i always make sure i am in my own -space- when i decide to light up - this is normally outside in the back yard.. i do give up successfully for my children, theres no hesitation, my body just refuses to smoke while pregnant - im very greatful for that...

the only reason i take up smoking after pregnancy, is because i find thats my -me- time, where i can sit and relax - enjoy my OWN company hehe. even though i know its causing my body harm, i actually enjoy it! :-):-).. thats terrible i know! but im no saint!
i smoked for many years but quit when i moved into my bachelor pad coz i didn-t want it to stink of fags (i did have a few cheeky ones whilst hanging out the kitchen window though). i found it really really difficult to quit and still have cravings 5 years on but what i found that worked was having an apple instead of a cig (sounds a bit cheesy i know) but it seemed to work for me. i-m down to about 7 apples a day now :)
giving up smoking is hard, your body and mind are hopelessly addicted after all, but i do feel so much better now, and its satisfying to know i-ve given up when others couldn-t.
but to be honest, i-d still love a ciggie after my sunday dinner :)
My boyfriend quit smoking for over a year now. He went cold turkey and has no desire to smoke again. He was smoking a pack and a half a day for over 30 yrs. He is amazed how much better food tastes and the air he breathes smells fresh. I am very proud of him and he knows it. Anyway, it is no fun to kiss an ashtray, if you know what I mean.
I am going on my 12th year of not smoking and it feels so good. I can-t believe I used to smoke with the window down in my car while it was raining or when I went to the restroom. I loved to smoke and didn-t want to stop but I am glad I did quit.
I am going on 5 years at 15-20 a day!!! And i see no end in sight!! Just thinking about quitting causes me stress and anxiety.
Hate to say it but i think i am hooked for life!!!
I quit 20 years ago and am glad I did. It was really tough for me. It wasn not an easy time at all.

Are there any ways to quit smoking where you don;t feel the nicotine withdrawals? -

I have tried cutting down tremendously! I smoke a half to a pack a day. I dont- like how your body feels the anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, and the anxiety. Is there a way to avoid this and still quit?
I think your best bet is to use the patch. It must be Nicoderm CQ. The generic brands are crap. Use the patch, and have plenty of fruit available for you. Everytime you have an urge, have a piece of fruit. It will help the cravings considerably. Further, start a new hobby (something physical) immediately on your quit date. Although, you will have some withdrawal, this is an easy way to freedom!! good luck!
Yes, there are ways to avoid this and still quit.

First and foremost, adjust your diet to be as healthy as possible. Follow that up with some daily cardiovascular exercise. You would be utterly amazed how much going on a run every day helps to reduce cravings and contribute positively to your physical and mental well-being.

Lastly, I highly recommend a regimen of St. John-s Wort, available at most any drug store. Take about 900mg in the morning after eating a well balanced breakfast.

All of these things will help. Congratulations on getting this far, and good luck in the future!

Would you quit smoking weed for your girlfriend/boyfriend? -

Would you quit smoking weed for your girlfriend/boyfriend? -

Lets say they dont nag about you and youve been together for over 4 months everythings great but your partner acts a little strange towards you everytime you smoke.. would you quit?
yea definitely. especially if you like them alot, plus weed is bad for you..
I think it is in your best interest to quit, although you should already know that. I think you should talk to your boyfriend/girlfriend about it and maybe find a solution that you-re both happy with. For example, you would smoke once a week or only at parties.

If you want my personal answer to that question, I would have to say it depended on how important and/or influential that person was on my life. I believe if you really like someone, you-d be willing to make this sort of change, because it isn-t a negative, and it will be better for you in the long run. (:
it depends. if the person had a serious problem with it, and i planned on staying with them, then yes.

instead of going on -they act a little strange-...why not talk to him/her and ask if they want you to quit? they may be fine with what you do but just unsure of how to act around someone that smokes weed.
If I was you I would quit right away, your partner dosnt want you to as they know the effects and you must want to quit or you would not have asked the question. Also very bad for your health.

How can I quit smoking if Im always bored? -

Im bored alot unfortunately, and to me theres nothing better to do than smoke. Unfortunately, thats gotten me into a smoking habit which I kind of like smoking, but I would like to quit. Its getting very expensive. What can I do????
use the money you would use to buy cigarettes ant take up a hobby.
guitar is good as your fingers are kept occupied, as is trumpet, just something to keep your hands busy
I struggled to quit for a long time, but never was comfortable with pills or patches. And at the end of the day, I found an intelligent way to quit smoking.

The important thing is to realize that smoking creates strong emotional bonds - and it is these bonds that need to be severed. Physical cravings only serve to wake up memories of the emotion...

Once that realization and awareness sets in, it is then important to reframe your thinking about smoking. Instead of saying -I am stressed and therefore I smoke- say -I am stressed but there are other ways to deal with it-. This shift in thinking is important.

Good luck, and if you want to learn more, go to http://www.wisdomtoquit.com
seriously. stick it to obama and quit.

he put money in the stimulus bill for helping people quit, yet the SCHIPS bill is funded nearly entirely by revenue generated by tobacco taxes

ridiculous.

find the willpower to do it and just do it!

you can do it
The only way you can quit smoking, is if you do something that counters it... like working out, and eating healthy.

Once you start putting in a lot of hours working out, and the time to put yourself a healthy meal, you will not want to UNDO this hard work, and you will not smoke.

At least thats what made me stop smoking...

p.s. you will never quit smoking, you just stop temporarily. I been on and off for 10 years. And when someone around me smokes, i have to have one. But I trained myself to have only one in a while when im out.
There is a pill called Zyban that is a very effective quitting smoking tool. You should see your doc.

As far as boredom, find a hobby. Get an XBOX 360 and play games or start running. I have found that running lessens the urge to smoke and makes you feel a lot better. Everytime you want to smoke just go for a long walk/run and work it out. Good luck!
yo read the box, get a woman, (if you don-t already have one) its not healthy trust me, smoking weed is better than cigarettes, not that im tellin u to do that but hey look it up and while ure at it look at other ppl who smoke and how they end up u might get the big picture.
go into the toilet and take a whole pack with you and pretend your reading the box and then just drop them into the toilet... im pretty sure you wont smoke them after that...

get an xbox360 or something, you need to occupy yourself

or you need to get out more
dude do u have a xbox or anything else ....i find when im playing call of duty 5 or halo...or guitar hero 4 it takes my mind off of whats going on ....and grabs my attention ........so i have hardly anytime to smoke dude ..or if u have a gf dude ...hang out watch a flick ......play a game with her .....it will keep u busy

try a patch, the gum, talk to your doctor. trust me...your heart and lungs will thank you later. the longer you smoke the harder it will be to quit. good luck
Second the hobby idea. You can-t be bored if you have interests, and there-s something out there that should interest just about anyone.
you should try taking up a hobby, like masturbating. I find it-s a lot more fun than smoking and it keeps your hands busy.
Chew Gum. it works that-s what I do. or keep busy.

I want to stay off the herb for my reasons to become a cop and to serve the lord please give me a site that will help me!
It-s really a matter of looking after yourself one day at a time; eating healthily, taking good care of yourself; finding ways to handle the less positive aspects of withdrawal, being kind to yourself; doing physical activity to stimulate endorphins - natural highs - drinking plenty of water to aid detoxing; journal your feelings if that helps.

Be aware of artificial ways to get high - including eating too much junk and candy - as that may prolong the amount of time it takes to bring your body back into balance.

Also, what-s in the past stays there. No point in beating yourself up over smoking weed; just resolve not to do it again. In the future, that may mean not being part of the undercover cop programme if that is offered to you. *Some* of them do end up addicted to it.

Treat yourself to a comedy now and again. Laughter IS the best medicine.
dude from my personal experiences as a teenager smokin weed all the freakin time, ive learned that it isnt physically addictive. basically if you dont want to crave it so bad you have to stay away from things and people that have it or are using it. basically go cold turkey by just staying away from it

Your doing a great personal rehab on your own I have been working on it for a few years, If you don-t mine they have N/A all over the world go if you need to it helps me a lot. I don-t go everyday maybe once a week, just to get through the week. Just watch out for people places and things. I had a supposed friend try to talk me back in to it, that-s not a friend that-s a aquantence.
HI Watson,

I quit smoking 4 months ago, I recently started coughing on and off especially during the night? -

I quit smoking after 17yrs. I developed a case of brochitis 4 months ago and decided to quit. I was treated with antibiotics and recovered. Just in the past month, I developed an on and off cough with clear mucus that occurs at night.

Is it allergies? anybody else have this situation?
Your body will cough up the bad stuff by the end of 6 months off the smokes. Make sure youre exercising so you can increase your lung health quicker.

Quit smoking? -

Yes, when I suddenly had difficulty breathing six years ago after 20+ years. I mean I had no warning! No chance to think, -Okay, okay, I-ll quit so that I won-t harm my lungs any more.- Having a suffocating feeling is a remarkable incentive to quit. Now I can no longer play tennis, hike, take long walks, exert myself much in anyway. I had to take a steroid which had negative side effects, mainly weight gain and thin skin. I don-t have cancer, but it is a condition that will never go away. So now I -smoke- three different inhalers to try to relieve the symptoms. I even have to use oxygen sometimes and to sleep. I sure wish I could go back and undo the harm. If you smoke, try to imagine that this happened to you, then realize that it isn-t too late for you! And don-t forget, smoking is very expensive, smells terrible (it really does, it-s in your hair and clothes), is becoming socially unacceptable, and definitely affects your stamina and breathing capacity. Try going fast up a flight of stairs. I know it-s hard to quit, it-s such a comfortable habit. Maybe you don-t even smoke, but are just asking. But if you do, please THINK ABOUT IT CAREFULLY. You won-t always be young, and you would hate being a pulmonary cripple. I still drive, and get around on two legs, but I-d much rather be my normal self. I have my younger, smoker-self to thank. Imagine meeting your future self, and being frightened by it. I was frightened into quiting cold-turkey by my breathing troubles, and it was already too late! Wish I could be this long-winded in reality. Good luck to you.

oil the social interacions of people. Look at the
many people of importance who smoke. They are a testamony
to the necessity of this behavior.
Yes.
Yes....Quit smoking
yes
Left Smoking 14 years back,I would ask all smokers to climb stairs and find out how they feel when they find great difficulty in breathing!! That-s what cigarette does to your lungs. Now I can climb 10 floors without slightest difficulty!
do it.

its good for your health and every stick you dont smoke adds a few minutes to your life on earth.
Yes absolutely. Smoking is damaging your health without a doubt. The longer you smoke the more damage you do. If you quit you will have more energy, a better lung capacity and will feel and be more healthy. Also you smell awful when you smoke so you will be more ozone friendly if you quit!!! Best of luck xx It takes 7 years to undo the damage of smoking to your lungs so dont delay!!!
good idea - good luck!
Took me forever, and I still have one or two every week. So... I guess no, but kinda yes. Whatever.
YES!!! I am a respiratory therapist and I see all kinds of patients that have been severely affected by smoking.

my father smokes a lot.we have told him so much about disadvantages of smoking be he never persuades.now what can i do???
You can-t force anyone to do something they don-t want to do. Just keep pounding the negatives of smoking into his head.
Does it bother him that he is harming the other people that he lives with? Would it bother him if you got lung cancer? Or his wife?
Sorry but you can-t. It-s something he has to want to do. I had a friend that had lung cancer and they removed one of his lungs. He still smoked until it killed him.
d/l and print out articles on second hand smoke and leave it in a place where he can read it, It-s killing you
hypnotism...it really works and I dont believe in that kind of thing but my boyfriend use to smoke all the time and hasnt since then
you can-t make anyone quit, most react in anger because we feel like we are getting are rights to freedom taken away too. wish their was a way to make it fair for non smokers an smokers ,it is a legally sold product .You can get the nickerett gum or patch and give it to him as a gift and say dad you can try this if you want to. he will probably say no, if so tell him to put in in his desk or some place and it will be their if he decides to try it. AT LEAST YOU CAN SAY YOU TRIED TO HELP. you would be surprised at the amount of smokers that won-t buy the stuff to help them quit because its so expensive. if they really want to solve the problem of people quiting they should give it away or lower the prices to the same amount as a pack of cigarettes .I WONDER- IF I COULD buy a pack of nickarett gum with 20 pieces or pack of 20 cigarettes I AS A SMOKER TOO I-D BUY the gum AND TRY IT if it was the same price as the cigarettes,I told a doctor that once and of course the rich can-t see ,like right now a person may have $5.00 in their pocket the stuff to help them quit $52 which one is the person going to buy. ask your dad why he hasn-t bought the patch or gum .
The only thing that you could possibly offer is to quit something with him. It is so much easier to have a partner and a support person to help go through it together. Kind of like a Weight Watchers or AA for smoking, ya know? Is there a habit or something you-re doing that you could and should quit and -buddy up- with him? For example, if you drink a lot of Cokes and know how bad they are for you, offer to be his quitting buddy. You-ll quit Cokes if he-ll quit smoking. Or you-ll start exercising, or you-ll diet, or stop chewing your nails, or whatever it is you can change WITH him. Talk about your progress and your weak moments to each other. Be supportive and each other-s motivation. Also, has he heard of Chantix? It-s a pill the smoker takes to alleviate the cravings for nicotene.
You can-t make your father stop smoking, just like any other drug he will want to have to want to quit.

(Many blessings)
all you can do is try. you can-t make anyone do something they don-t want to do. you can continue to talk about it with him, suggest some ways of quitting, and tell him all the bad things it can do you, but its hard for a person to quit and they only can if they really want to
take out a cigerrate in front of him and try to light it ......

I-m thinking about getting hypnotised to quit smoking. I-ve heard of people who quit smoking using this method i.e. friend of a friend etc but never met someone. It costs €200 for one session and apparently all I need is one session. The cost doesn-t bother me too much, although I won-t be able to afford it until another couple of months. Can anyone who tried this give me some info and their opinion please?

Thanks
Yes , it works but one session won-t be enough.

You have to *want* to stop, I guess you know that, but did you know that fear tactics, such as putting health warnings and Photoshopped disgusting images on cigarette packets actually makes you smoke more?

So is putting up the price, or hiding the packets from view, reverse phsycology.

You can input the same information as a hypnotist would yourself, visit support at
http://www.friendswithcancer.com.au

I have been hypnotised before, but not because of smoking. I was suffering with an anxiety thing.

Hypnotism will only work if you really believe it! The Dr. was able to contact my unconscious mind, which was very freaky but the same time amazing. He somehow made me lift my own thumb without me knowing it, this is how they test it-s working.

Your awake throughout it all, just with your eyes closed, so don-t be afraid that you will not wake up or anything like that.

But to be honest I do recommend it, and if i had any problems in my future life, i-d be getting hypnotised in a flash.

Any more questions, feel free to add detail to this question, and i will edit my answer.

Take care, you are doing a good thing.
I was hypnotised and it did work. Worth spending your money on it. Only things was i did not really want to stop smoking and carried on trying to smoke and i am still smoking. But it does work. It was done by a hypnotist in SA as a test.:)
I was hypnotised and it didn-t work. I came out of the building gasping for a fag! However it does work well for some people so I would give it a go if I were you, it-s worth a try! Good luck x
I don-t think it works unless you really really want to quit...you have to make the decision to quit before you have the hypno.
it workd for my dad but after one year he started again becuase he is too adicted he startd when he was 12 and now he is 45 so yh aslo he is a chain smoker so yh i would give it a go

I want to quit smoking so badly ...any tips? -

I-ve been smoking for like 10 years already and I smoke more than a pack a day. I want to kick the habit for good. I just need some ideas.
Hey this is a terrible thing. My wife smoked for 9 years and she stopped in 1 month. All the free info you need is on the net. This website helped hew heaps to stop smoking just from the info.
Cut down the amount of cigs you smoke , decreasing the amount each day, go as long as you can in between cigs , the cravings usually begin mild then intensify they can get bad but they will start to get better ,so try to remind yourself that it will not last forever. set a quit date , like give yourself 30 days to cut down and quit , mark it on the calendar and keep it in a visible place and stick to it. get rid of all ashtrays and dont let anyone smoke around you or at least stay away from them while you are in the process of quitting. it helps to buy cigs that you dont like to help yourself stay away from them! change your routine a bit , stay away from the areas you usually smoke in and stay away from activities you usually smoke doing if possible.if the cravings get bad try to go to sleep while your asleep you wont be consciously wanting the cig. Its a very hard thing to do but its will be the best thing you could ever do for yourself and those around you! talk yourself thru the cravings tell yourself that you can do this , look at a ashtray how gross it looks and smells and imagine all that going into your lungs, smokers dont realize it but they really do stink bad!! and would you want the reason for your death to be because of a stupid smelly and extremely expensive cig? keep those thoughts in your mind as well. the hard parts will not last forever once you get through the bad you will feel so good about the accomplishment and not to mention smell alot better to! you can do it!!!!!
Go to your doctor. I-ve heard of medications that are for that and there-s also the nicotine patch you can buy over the counter at drug stores.
Perhaps you can find some useful tips in
http://www.quitnow.info.au
.
I went to the doctor and was prescribed Chantix. I didn-t think anything would work, but that medicine worked wonders. Good Luck!!
you can stop smoking 3 hours from now

If you have quit smoking or are trying to quit, what is your biggest challenge? -

I quit smoking in 1971. Except for a few cigars I haven-t smoked since and my last cigar was in 1977. Have you quit or are you trying to kick the habit? I quit cold turkey without a support group or any kind of medicine or other aid. Once I firmly decided to quit I had no trouble staying quit, but I did backslide several times on the way to successfully quitting. I never doubted I could kick the habit, though it was not easy to quit after years as a smoker.
Hi warren..

congrats on that time its impressive.. i have been free for over 5 years now.. after smoking for more than 40 years.. the thing that worked for me was a support group..

the biggest challenge, was to become convinced, i couldent smoke just one..

The hardest parts are when im at work i have that little voice in the back of my head that says just have one, or share one with a friend. I haven-t gave into temptation, i find that if i say the phrase it will not kill me to not smoke out loud or in my head and then start branching off like my girlfriend likes it when i don-t smoke so it will not kill me to not smoke, This type of reinforcement helps me a lot of the time when i am having an urge. I think that is the toughest part about quitting is the conscious mind that wants you to smoke.
Ive been smoking for 5 years, and i have tried to stop many times but its hard being in a social environment where there are smokers. And sometimes i enjoy a smoke whether i am bored, out for coffee, drinking...thats where i will find it hard....i know i shud stop cas i can feel the effects but it is VERY hard...i know that in a month or so they are putting cigarettes up to $20 a packet...that mite influence me not to! I kno its going to take a few goes before i really stick to it..
its seeing a cigar in a store and knowing Ive got my drivers license in my purse. But it helps not to take youre drivers license to the store so u cant buy em
The hardest thing for me was getting to the event that finally forced me to quit. It was a sore that wouldn-t heal.
Sex...we used to always enjoy a cigarette after sex.
So since we quit smoking...we don-t have as much sex.
But we eat a lot of ice cream.....
I Have tried and failed at it and i Applaud you .keep up ur excellent work
Warren, I first quit about six months ago, after smoking for nearly fifty years. I did pretty good for a few months. But my daughter who lives at home, also smokes. So yes, I have backslid too. (Sorry Charli)
I have since quit again, sneaking a few drags here and there. But I know I cannot afford even this.
The one thing that keeps me firmly rooted to my final destination is my breathing. My breathing sounds so horrible (like a death rattle) it keeps me awake at night, and at times it gets difficult to breathe.
My last pack of cigarettes, I was rolling my own! They had gone over $5.00 a pack!
-Cold turkey- is the only way and without all the support.
The more attention drawn to it the harder it is...
I commend you, my friend! I am still in battle!~
I am indeed impressed. I salute you, congratulate you, and no one could possibly bestow enough accolades that you so richly deserve: I am dead serious - -scouts honor-.

I-m only about 7 yrs. your senior, and I-ve given up totally trying to quit. My last attempt was about 2 mos. ago, when I tried Chantrix I think it was called: a medication program that is designed if I recall correctly, to take approximately 8 wks. or so to be effective - results were supposed to have been noticeable after the 2nd wk.

I had begun the 3rd wk., but I began to feel so strange and really rather ill, that I had to quit.

As an adolescent(child-?) around 11 yrs. old, my brother and I were persuaded by our farm friends, peers - lived in rural Arkansas - to try a cigarette. Become hooked good, shortly thereafter, and have smoked around 2 + pks. a day, ever since. Stopped once for 6 mos., and another time for maybe a week or two; but for never as long as you have.

And guess what? Even though I have COPD, I have no signs of lung cancer. So I-ve just forgotten about my smoking, and decided to try and live life at it-s fullest during the time I have left - and you know who, only knows how long that will be.

Cheers,

Alberich
I began smoking at 17 and decided I needed to quit at 38. I did use the patch (21gms nicotine for 6 weeks, 14gms nicotine for 2 weeks and 7gms nicotine for 2 weeks). Got through the first 8 weeks with a plan and didn’t need the last 2 weeks of patches. The last cigarette I ever smoked I did it in front of my mirror. I made it as unpleasant as I could by taking frequent long drags (I wanted it to be the most unpleasant memory of smoking that I could create) and asked myself if this is what I wanted to be a slave to for the rest of my life or did I have the courage and will power to conquer it.
My plan: I decided in advance that I was going to tackle all of the things around my house that I thought about for years and never got around to them. First on the list was to refinish my kitchen cabinets. I chose the most difficult and time consuming thing first. By the time I finished that project I had pretty much kicked the habit. Keeping my hands busy and focusing on something that I had committed myself to really helped. I also chewed on straws, all day! Honestly, it was easier to overcome the addiction to nicotine than it was to overcome the habit of actually going through the motions of smoking.
Every once in awhile, even after all the years that have gone by, I still get a craving for a cigarette but it is only after a meal and the craving lasts for about 1/100 of a second.
I am very glad that I quit and I know I would never ever go back to smoking, if only because it is so darn expensive now. Besides, I can’t stand the smell of it.

How 55 year old man can quit smoking? -

My father is 55 and he smokes a lot. He smokes one and a half of package a day. Who can tell me if Micoderm CQ works or not. His teeth are protez and I don-t think he can chew a Nicorrette gum. please, those who had experience with Micoderm CQ or commit or lazanges, tell me what works the best?
hes pretty deep. they now have nicotine-free smokes. since he is deep in the ritual aspect of it, perhaps those might be up his alley.
I smoked the same number of cigarettes as your father for 47 years. I thought I couldn-t stop smoking and I tried everything you can buy to help you stop. Nothing worked! Even after my doctor told me I had emphysema, I still couldn-t quit. I was taken to the hospital near death one night and fired up on the way home a week later. I was put on oxygen to help me breathe at night. The next year, I was in the hospital again for a week. Once again the doctor asked me when was I going to quit? My answer was why? What-s the pay-off? An extra two months in the nursing home?
He asked me who told me that and I said that I figured that out myself. To which, he replied that my reasoning was flawed.
-Nothing will reverse the lung damage, but if you stop smoking you will not damage them any further. You can still live a productive life if you stop now.-
Challenge your father not to quit forever, but simply stop smoking for two weeks. It-s really tough for about three or four days and after that, not too bad. Two weeks without cigarettes and he will feel so empowered and so much better, he-ll probably realize quiting is a real possibility. The gum, the anti-smoking aids, maybe it works for some folks, but not for me. What works is making a choice. Do I want to breathe or die? Breathing is better!
Hypnotism to stop smoking is an excellent way to end your smoking habit because the success rates are possibly double that of the patch and gum. You can also use hypnosis together with other stop smoking programs like the patch to achieve even better results.
The only thing that can possibly help him to quit smoking is his own self-determination. If the will is not there then no outside factors will help.
I used the the nicoderm tablets and good old fashioned lollypops, (you maybe too young to remember Kojak in the 70s.)

he was a detective that went areound with a toostie pop so he would not smoke and he would always say, -who loves ya baby?-

anyway, after 3 month of tablets, ihave not smoked since thanksgiving and still suck on the suckers a little , but not much.
I quit using nicotene nasal spray - worked for me.

I am very well read, and have researched MANY ways one can quit smoking. WHAT REALLY HELPED YOU? I-m looking for innovative ideas! (Please don-t respond with: -ZYBAN- or -GET THE PATCH-.) Been there, done that.
The reality is that you need to approach it from a stopping a habit perspective rather than a nicotine withdrawal perspective.
Popular culture and the drug companies have taken a minor annoyance like nicotine withdrawal and made it out be this huge horrifying experience- it-s not. Granted for the couple of days it-s a pain in the *** but that-s about it.
Glad I could help

Just quit! that is what I did 33 years ago when a pack of Marobaro-s cost $0.45 per pack.
I tell you what worked for me was to just stop.Cold turkey. No patches, no gums, just no cigarettes. After the first few days you fiend for a smoke but you just can-t give in. If you can stick with it for 21 days then you have created a habit. Of non-smoking, and by then you should be well on the road to wellness. I smoked from 14 to 24 then quit a pack a day habit. I haven-t smoked for 10 years. Sometimes I still think about it, but not enough to start up again. It-s to expensive on the wallet and mostly on your health. So that-s my two cents worth. Hope you are sucessful.
i have tried everything also, and nothing works, one of my friends broke down and paid alot of money to get hypnytised (sry i cant spell), and it worked, i was surpirised. she started smoking again about a year and half later, but she it made her just not want to smoke. I have yet to try it. good luck

Does quitting smoking cause someones breath to smell? -

Does quitting smoking cause someones breath to smell? -

A friend I recently met has quit smoking 2 months ago after smoking for 20 yrs. This is a great feat! The issue is her breath stinks? I don-t know what her breath smelled like when she smoked; however, could her quitting smoking cause the pungent odor that seems to be constantly present.
Last June I could still smell my own smoking breath even after I quit it two months ago in April. I still occasionally smell that smoking breath from myself after I quit 10+ months but it-s getting rare and rare. It-s a gradual and slow healing process after one quit his/her smoking. But it-s worth it pretty much!
It could be that she had bad breath before she smoked...or it could be that years of smoking has done some damage to her teeth and gums, which may be causing the odd smell.

Many times, bad breath is an internal problem, actually coming from the stomach rather than from just dental hygiene, like people tend to think. If this is the case in your friend, it could be that maybe her eating habits changed while she was trying to quit. Chewing gum, using mints, and brushing/flossing/rinsing regularly may only mask the odor.

Your friend should go to the dentist and see if the problem is an oral one. If not, there are actually herbal (natural) herbs that you can chew that work with your stomach acids (they can also be bought in pill form) and fight bad breath internally.
i think the smell doesnt go away

It-s gotta be worth it though, because smoking is as hard to quit as heroin is. Make the bets small at first and gradually make them bigger. Taylor the rewards based upon what she likes. It-s even better if you offer to do (or not do) something as well.

For example: If you don-t smoke for 1 day, you get this or I-ll do this. (small reward. Breakfast in bed, dinner out or made by you, etc...)

After she wins the first bet, she-ll feel confident and will be much more receptive when you suggest another -bet-. This time it will be more difficult (naturally) but the reward will be bigger.

It-s a slow process and I know you-d prefer a fast one, but it just may work for you. If my husband makes bets with me for breakfast in bed, a massage, a housekeeper (him or hired!) for a day, a great pair of shoes, a weekend getaway or piece of jewelry, I-m ALL over it!

If your wife is at all competitive...she-ll be up for the challenge.
Thanks for picking my answer - I wish you and your wife all the best!

Go to www.chantix.com read about this new quit smoking pill manufactured by Pfizer Corp..It-s expensive, some insurance companies will cover it, Your Doctor has to prescrib it or maybe you can get a prscript. on line...I know people who are on it and were 1 to 2 pack a day smokers..They have been on it from 30 to 60 days and say they don-t even have a desire to smoke regardless of situations nor have they put on weight..They swear by this..Cost should not be a factor even if Ins. company doesn-t pay..a carton of Cigs is at least $30.00 so month of Chantix is 6 cartons of cigs and a better quality of life..is it worth it you bet..Good Luck..
I have a cure I swear will work for anyone: Start running. After a long run, you will initially crave a cigarette. But as soon as you take the first puff, it will seem very foreign to your body (even if you are an addict). You will keep trying to suck it down but feel worse and worse, both physically and emotionally. You will then give up trying to smoke for that evening, and repeat the process the next day. However, I think drinking always causes cigarette cravings for former smokers, so that will never go away.
jail. no access to cigs and not around anyone smoking. but she will never quit if she doesn-t really want to.
tie them to a tree and throw pies at them until they give in
TRY THE NICOTINE INHALOR BUT IT IS UP TO THE PERSON THEY HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT
there is no easy way, your wife must want to stop, and put all her willpower into it.,,good luck
This is the best way

There are many ways, depends of the person you apply. I recommend to take her to a hospital whit people how soffer becouse they don-t stop smoking in time, to see and learn about the dammage of smoking.
Good luck
I used the patch, and bag after bag of Mary Jane candies, Every time I felt the need to smoke I tapped on the patch a few times. Didnt do anything but it made me feel better
First she would need to want to quit. I-m a smoker and have been for 17 years and no amount of pleading and begging from my boyfriend, or children or anyone else for that matter will get me to quit. I enjoy it. I figure, I-m going to die anyways, I might as well die happy. But if she wants to quit, it has to be HER decision, not anybody else-s.
You cannot get someone else to stop smoking.
They have to really want to stop themselves. If someone is nagging at them about it, it only makes it worse.
She already knows how you feel about it, so you have to be patient and wait until she is ready.
That-s just about impossible. She has to make up her own mind to quit smoking. Smoking is very addicting.
you can-t -get- anyone to do anything they don-t want to do. it-s as simple as that.

Nicotine replacement products provide low doses of nicotine that do not contain the contaminants found in smoke. They are proving to be twice as helpful as other standard quitting methods. Replacement products include nicotine patches, gums, nasal sprays, and inhalers. Side effects of any nicotine replacement product may include headaches, nausea, and other gastrointestinal problems. People often experience sleeplessness in the first few days, particularly with the patch, but the insomnia usually passes. Patients using very high doses are more likely to experience symptoms, and reducing the dose can prevent them. Certain individuals like people with heart disease, pregnant women, small children may need to avoid nicotine replacement products.

Nicotine patches: Nicotine patches, or transdermal nicotine, can be an effective way to quit smoking. The quit rate for patch users is around 20% after six months. Nicotine patches are available over the counter, but it is best to consult a doctor before using them, particularly people with any medical problems.

Nicotine gum: Nicotine gum (Nicorette), available over the counter, has also been effective for a number of people. Some prefer it to the patch because they can control the nicotine dosage and chewing satisfies the oral urge. Long-term dependence may be a problem with this method.

Nicotine inhaler: The nicotine inhaler resembles a plastic cigarette holder. It comes with a number of nicotine cartridges which are inserted into the inhaler. It has some specific advantages over other slower nicotine replacement products:

Nicotine nasal spray: The nasal spray satisfies immediate cravings by providing doses of nicotine rapidly, and thus may play a useful role in conjunction with slower acting nicotine replacement therapies.

Nicotine tablet: A nicotine tablet that is held under the tongue is also very useful.

How hard is it to quit smoking? What are the best ways to quit? Are the benefits worth the aggravation? -

How hard is it to quit smoking? What are the best ways to quit? Are the benefits worth the aggravation? -

Quitting smoking is not easy due to the very powerful drug nicotine. Because smokers become addicted to nicotine they also inhale harmful tobacco tar which contains around 120 different poisons and 1200 chemicals, many of them carcinogenic. Imagine all those on your tongue! However here-s how to do it and it works because I did it.

First of all you-ve got to want to quit, and genuinely, because if you don-t you-ll backslide at the first chance you get. Don-t forget that when you give up just having the odd one makes you a smoker again.

Right then, here we go.

Pick a date that you want to stop. Make sure it-s not a day when you would normally smoke heavier such as Saturday night in the bar. Don-t -stock up- by smoking heavier than you would up to Q-Day (Quitting Day). If you can cut down a bit. The craving is caused by the nicotine levels in your body dropping thus creating a -need- to replace them. On Q-Day don-t carry anything connected with smoking, no cigarettes or matches or lighter. Do have a supply of mints or sweets to suck when you get a craving. Tell friends and family that -You Don-t Smoke- NOT that -You-re Giving Up- otherwise they-ll offer you one saying -Just one won-t hurt-. If they do tell them that it will and if they give you one you-ll break it up. If they insist, do that, they won-t offer again.

On the first day you-ll get cravings, but try to think of something else and suck a mint. DO NOT substitute food for cigarettes. Eat normally. Remember that you have -Chosen- not to smoke. Each time a craving comes you have a choice to smoke or not to. Choose not to.

Within the first three days your body will start to reject the toxins and poisons you-ve been filling it with and you-ll feel worse and probably have a bad taste in your mouth. Don-t worry this is normal. After a week this will pass. You-ll start to taste your food again, smell things better, breathe better and feel better. You may cough up some phlegm. Do not worry. This is your lungs getting rid of some of the tar. After two weeks it becomes more normal not to smoke. Eventually you will notice how badly other smokers smell and how loathsome tobacco smoke is. You will feel fitter and better in everyway.

Don-t forget to remember that you are a non-smoker now. It was your choice. If you want to see some tangible results each morning put the amount of money you would have spent on cigarettes that day in a jar. In England they cost around £4.50 for twenty so a twenty a day smoker will spend around £135.00 a month on this dirty habit. In exchange they will get poor health, die younger, be poorer in the pocket, be offensive to others and impair their senses besides being an un-neccesary drain on the Health Service. If I asked you before you smoked to pay that in exchange for those things, would you buy them?

Think of why you smoked in the first place. Remember that starting smoking is not pleasant. It makes you sick. Was it peer pressure? Did you think it made you look -cool- or -grown-up- or -tough-? Are those things still relevant. Think about all the non-smokers who are -cool- They-re certainly more so than smokers.

Finally I will not criticise you for being a smoker, I was one myself once but let me close by letting you into a little secret. Before I retired one of my jobs was to sell life insurance and pensions to my customers. One of the questions on the application form was -Do you smoke?- and -How many cigarettes a day do you smoke?- Why do you think that insurance companies ask you that? I-ll tell you. It is proven fact, not conjecture, fact, that each cigarette you smoke knocks between 5 and 6 minutes off your life expectancy. I worked on 6 so that for every ten a day you smoke you lose an hour. Every 24 days you lose a day. Every 24 years you lose a year. If you start smoking at age 18 and do 20 a day then by the age of 66 you have lost 4 years life expectancy. If I were to ask you at 66 -Do you want to live until you are 70 or die today?- what would your answer be? You see, with life policies we had to pay out sooner to smokers as they died sooner so the premiums were loaded. If you have life insurance when you have given up for one year tell them and they should reduce your premiums. If you lie, of course, they-ll know from the post mortem and medical history that you have and may reduce the payment for the policy.

I hope I have been of help. Good luck with giving up. I quit on February 14th 1975 and haven-t smoked one since. I was on 15-20 a day.
Tell everybody you know about your decision.

for a complete explanation about the Trick To Quit Smoking
I-ve quit for 3 yrs and I was known for being an unrepentant heavy smoker. I quit on father-s day when my wife was pregnant and the Spurs won their second championship. So picking the right day is crucial because I know if I start now I will never have as good a reason again. I planned it for months. I used the nicotine patch and some audio hypnosis I downloaded. I also ate like a pig. Remove anything that reminds you of your old life. Do stuff that was hard to do before like exercise or go to a restaurant and eat without having to go outside. Just remember why you are quitting and focus on that. Depending on where you live quit when the weather is worst outside. I know this is random but it-s what I remember I did. The patch also came with a web site with good tips. It took me 15yrs to quit. Remember with an addiction the drug is always #1 and yourself and your family will always come after. I think it was one of the best things I-ve ever done.
I took Zyban, really worked, but I really wanted to give up.
If I can do it anyone can, trust me.
I do feel much better, and I-ve so much travelling with the money I-ve saved.
Smoking is one of the hardest tasks a person can endure.
I believe the best way is cold turkey and I think this makes it even harder.
I have done it this way. There is usually some weight gain, but that can be controlled as you move on. I have noticed I rarely get colds or throat infections. Its so much better than before.
Go for it if you are the smoker, it will be the best achievement you have ever accomplished.
Very hard.
I found usefull the nicotine patches
but after 4 month sometime i still want a cig.....
I learned this the hard way, the best way to quit is to not start with it in the first place.
Best way is cold turkey but keep soda, crackers, water handy and hide in a room for two days. Then get ready for headaches and double vision for the next two days. Then get ready to gain 10 pounds. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
Smoking can be really hard to quit, and often thought impossible. But there are many aids available such as patches and pills to help you accomplish such a task. Is it worth the aggravation? Certainly yes. The truth is you will NEVER be able to repair all the damage you have caused to your lungs (I don-t need to lie to you) as nicotine plus the other carcinogens tobacco contain seriously adverse your body from affecting your skin, teeth, nails, intoxication and lungs. But just weeks after quitting you will be able to feel better immediately, gaining energy and breathing in a more efficient way. Please stop now, the longer you wait the more damage you cause and the harder is to recover.
Saint Nic has had me by the throat for years too...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
best way is to keep forcing yourself to work while chewing gum so you do not think of smoking at all and its not all hard. The benefits is definately worth the aggravation,do you think a few years of life span is worth a few weeks of hardship?

Any tips on curving the emotional issues tied with quitting smoking? -

I am attempting to quit smoking, again, and using the patch as a nicotine replacement. I am finding that even with the patch the physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms are still quite strong and almost unbearable. I am experiencing alot of edgyness, irritablilty and anxiety to the point that is effecting my relationships with others. Do any past smokers have any tips or maybe even a timeline in which to expect these symptoms to subside?
I went cold turkey. I think the most painful part was the first 2 or 3 days. maybe try explaining this to your friends/ family, so they-ll be more understanding. a BIG help will be for you to start exercising, like running. that-ll help clear your lungs, and calm your nerves. weight lifting is good for nerves, too.
Try what I tried:

Just for a couple of weeks try to avoid your usual schedule and routines, Dont frequent the places where you smoked, Dont hang with the smoking buddies of yesterday until youve kicked the habit ! Doesnt mean they are no longer your friends but they are your temptation! To take your mind off smoking by going to places where smoking is banned, Do things that you usually dont do as you will see your mind is more focused on -WHATS NEW- and not -WHAT OLD-,good luck and my prayers are with you as this is a battle you can win! Mind over matter!
Keep a packet of Rowntrees fruitgums handy

When you feel a craving stick some on your tongue and drown your tastebuds.

it worked for me 36 years ago and no looking back.

Do not keep any cigarettes at home or in your car or anywhee. get rid now.
