Depends on the person and how long they have smoked. Some people are able to stop completely, with little difficulty. The most effective way is a combination of a smoking cessation program and medications. Medications might include Zyban, Nicorette gum, or the Nicoderm patches.
go to the health food store they have herbs and pills ... and many of them too. its to east the quitting process. good luck..
YA ..
Stop lighting them.
Quitting smoking is as easy as having will power. If you can-t just stop, you-re too weak of a human being. The easy way to quit is to just stop. Simple.
eat mints then you when you smoke you will get turned off them straigh away. they taste really bad after a mint
I think you have to really have the desire to quit and then you can do it. see I don-t want to quit so I would be a failure if I tried. My husband quit cold turkey over 10 years ago, this is because he wanted to. I am sure the day will come when I will be forced to quit but until then I am going to enjoy them, it is my own stress relief, no I am not an idiot I know what smoking does and I am not promoting it I worked in the medical field for well over 20 years I seen the effect I am just being honest about it.
ya don-t do it
Yes. Just desire it, and leave it alone.
stop buying them
Works for alot of die hard smokers I know.

yup
try -transdermal patches- for tabacco ask ur doc abt it its more easy then u can think it would be
nothing work sreally. just throw ithe pack away and stop completely. initially you will get the urge , but gradually it iwll disappear. your mind will clear and you will be able to think better. healthwise also u will feel more energetic
don-t buy cigs - keep them out of house
That depends in part on how hooked the user is, both physically, - emotionally. Replacing a habit is easier than just stopping one.

There is a relatively new prescription called CHANTIX that works pretty well. After 20 years of smoking I quit and its been 7 months now. Realize that you have to want to quit and you have to try.
If there is, i think there won-t be so many smokers around. Just tell yourself how bad smoking is for your (and people close to you) health and stick to that reason, then I think you can do it.
nop, not an easy way, its either cold turkey or patches and neither are easy
Yes, as soon as you see this message, say -I quit smoking right now!- and throw away any cig. left with you and stop buying anymore! See, it-s that easy!
That depends on your motive(s) for quitting. To really want to change is good, but if you don-t want, completely, to quit, then you won-t be able to. If you want to then you will be able to, reguardless of the method you choose.

What happens, physically and mentally, when you quit smoking? -

What happens, physically and mentally, when you quit smoking? -

Withdrawal symptoms can include any of the following:

* dizziness (which may only last 1-2 days after quitting)
* depression
* feelings of frustration, impatience, and anger
* anxiety
* irritability
* sleep disturbances, including having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, and having bad dreams or even nightmares
* trouble concentrating
* restlessness
* headaches
* tiredness
* increased appetite

These symptoms can lead the smoker to start smoking cigarettes again to boost blood levels of nicotine back to a level where there are no symptoms.

Smoking also makes your body get rid of certain drugs faster than usual. When you quit smoking, it changes the way your body handles these medicines. Ask your doctor if any medicines you take regularly need to be checked or changed after you quit.
you feel like dying but you look better
You become healthier

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Well...everybody is different. I think the tougher part is mentally. Your so used to always having something to do with your hands! I would say you may feel a little different for maybe two weeks but, it will get better after periods of time. It-s just something you have to stick with. It can be challenging but, well worth it! I quit once for 8 months but, made the mistake of starting again. I have no clue why but, it sure is true you smoke more when you start back up again! A pack may last me a day and a half now where it used to last me two to three days, four if I was lucky. Quite a difference lol...If your thinking of quiting..Good Luck! :)
Simple, you`ll have a healthy body and long life.
you go thru a period in which you have to wean your body from the addiction to nicotine -- very real, very physical. once you-ve accepted that you will have moments in which you are cranky and want nothing more than a smoke, you can learn the tools for not giving it.

you will learn that it-s OK to be anxious or tired or whatever normal responses we have. that you don-t need to drug yourself to get thru life. your lung power will improve immensely. you won-t stink. your significant other can kiss you without gagging. you can walk into a group of people without their backing away from the stench. you won-t be a slave to the nicotine. you will be able to sit through a meeting without thinking about when you get away for your next fix.

you will think and act more clearly and be a more productive, humane and responsible adult.
For me, I saw Jesus.
you dont smoke anymore.
you want to do it very adly again .its veryy hard to quit smoking becuase of niqotine
you start to breathe better and more active.. and you begin to think clearer and make better choices
mentally you go quite insane physically you grab a pack of smokes and sniff them and tell yourself you dont need a smoke
Headache, anxiety, just being a straight *****. They say after the 3rd day all the physical withdrawals are gone and anything else you are feeling is mental. It is a very powerful legal addiction.
For the first 3-6 weeks, cigarette dominates your conscious mind. You have this overwhelming feeling that says I have to have a cigarette, If I could just have one, I would be okay and then I could continue with my program to quit. Of course that one cigarette puts you back on the road to smoking.

Your sense of smell returns as well as the sense of taste which becomes sharpened. You will want to eat more because of this and will generally gain significant weight. Eating seems to take the place of cigarettes.

You feel better physically and mentally, but you will still have the nagging desire to smoke. You will have trouble sleeping soundly at first, but that will fade away gradually. You will then begin to sleep more soundly and wale in the mornings feeling more rested and just feeling better in a general sense.

If you continue with program you will feel better about yourself just because you were able to beat the cigarette. Something you can be proud of the rest of your life.

If you are active in sport, you wil find that your performance will improve because your body is no longer anchored by the effects of cigarette smoke.

That congestive sound from your chest when you laughed when you were on cigarettes will disappear.. The source of the irritation was removed when you stopped smoking. To this day, I can identify a smoker just by listening to his or her laugh.

Your rest heart rate will decrease dramatically. Your body will begin to purge itself of the effects of nicotine and other toxins that cigarettes contain.

After 4-6 months the longing and craving for a cigarette should diminish dramatically. It won-t really go away totally for a year or two depending on the individual.

You have to be careful when you go out clubbing with friends that you don-t give in to have a cigarette with a drink. That would be the beginning of the end, and believe it when I say it-s a huge temptation. Be aware of it and just say NO. It-s not easy.

After about 1-2 years of no cigarettes, you can consider yourself an ex smoker. You will begin to wonder at that point how you could have ever thought that smoking was pleasant and how you could have ever willingly put that poison into your body.

But as I said earlier, you will be proud that you quit and you will be proud to tell all your friends - I quit smoking in 2008, and I am happy that I did.- .............Good luck and stick with the program.
Physically you dont smell anymore, you feel better about your self, you dont worry or always have the thought of whether or not you smell like smoke. Mentally all depends on the type of person you are really.
u go thro periods of withdrawl, u mite becom depressed or sick, but as long as u dont relapse, ur body will get used to the lack of nicotine in ur system.

u will get soooo much healthier.
You want to die for awhile; then it gets better.
You start shaking and get grouchy

What is the best way to quit smoking ? -

Smoking is one of the most terrible habbits one may have. I am a smoker . I am 42 and now it-s about 25 years I am smoking . Along all of my life , it has been my worst nightmare. You know , when I realize that I am killing my children-s father and my wife-s husband I really feel like hating myself !
But still I am smoking !
Damn !
I can-t stop it !
Whenever I try to quit , I feel nervous and angry , I feel like missing something !
I wish I can do that one day .And I-m sure your guidance will be so useful .
I smoked for nearly 30 years In fact from when I was 11 years old till I was exactly 40 years old. I had annual chest exrays and managed to stay healthy thru all this. I always said the day I turn 40 would be the last day I would smoke. I tried many times and failed. Once quitting for almost 3 months.

The day I turned 40 I put out my last cigarette and have been smoke free for 11 years and to this day have never had a nicotine craving.

When you are ready to quit you will. Pure and simple.

I will warn you tho, the smell of cigarettes makes me throw up and it probably will do the same to you.

Good luck and keep up trying. One day it will be easy as pie to quit.
You have to just quit—but for a reason. I wanted to walk up and down the Grand Canyon which I knew I couldn-t do if I kept smoking. I did that in 1988. I also knew that if I died from lung cancer that my family would be without sympathy.

The chemical dependence ends in about a week. The psychological dependence is strong for a year. Whenever you get into a situation where you had last smoked–like doing your taxes or having a beer—you will think of having a cigarette. After three years, you will have learned to ignore all these cues.

You have to remember that any one smoke will not make your craving less but, instead, intensify your craving.

Good luck! It is an intense struggle.
Congratulations to you for even thinking about it !!! That-s the first step you have to want to be ready to stop all the patches and ideas aren-t gonna help if your not ready. I quit smoking 6 months ago and it was has hard but the patch really worked for me and with the money i saved from not buying them i got a gym membership and even lost weight. But you need to be ready just remember you need to talk it over with your doctor he/she might have some other ideas for you ..... GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
Yes, you can stop it. Cold turkey worked for me after smoking for 30 years. I did use the patches and the lozenges, and they helped. Been smoke free 1 year now and still crave cigarettes. It-s an addiction. I-m told I would want a cigarette for the rest of my life. I choose not to smoke. It is my decision. I-m not letting the cigarettes control me!
I know it-s hard, but you got to beat out the addiction through out your cigarrettes and make your relatives tie you to a chair if it-s legal. I-ve also heard of prescription drugs that help you kick the addiction. Not sure if they work, but remember: diligence, Dilegence, DILEGENCE!!! good luck!
leave it immediately
I have smoked for 30 years. I am getting acupuncture treatments and no longer crave smokes.
I like with a smoker (he has to smoke OUTSIDE).
Acupuncture also worked for my sister, who smoked for much longer than I.
Hi, i quit after a 25 year habit at age 40, what worked for me was cutting back drastically to about 7 cigerettes a day from 25 for just over a week, then i slapped a patch on and started chewing the nicorette gum too! i know your not suppose to use both but it was nessesary for me!! what i found was the physical part of the addiction passed in about two weeks, but the mental part took a little longer!! keep your hands occupied, i took up knitting again or i just held onto the remote! LOL...Drink lots and lots of water that is so important.

Good Luck!! it-s been 4 years smoke free for me, best descion i ever made.
First you make up your mind to do it, then Cold turkey. The only way to quit and stay quit. I quit at 39. The first 4 hours were as bad as I imagined it would be, but about 30 minutes after eating lunch, the craving went away and I haven-t wanted one since. I started at age 6 and was up to 4 1/2 packs a day, the 1/2 pack after going to bed! I am now 62 1/2. All my male kin on mom-s side died with cancer from 39 to 49 years old. My brother at 48, I being the only one to pass 50.
Good luck with your abstinence:)
...jj
Heroin is easier to kick, Try the little plastic inhalers for $150.00 and take the new time release Welbutron, another $100.00. that may just do it, good luck, I just lite up, I-m worse than you but I almost quit last time... don-t worry about the money you-ll have it back in no time...
The most successful treatment friends of mine have received is at Baylor Medical School in Houston. The period of time is 6 weeks...everyday one has to get up and go buy one pack of cigs for the day. Everyday one has to buy a different brand each day. If you are smoking two packs a day, then buy two, but only those two packs in the morning for the day. This goes on for a couple of weeks before you start taking out one cigarette each day (still having to buy a different brand each day) Finally, you get down to none. It is a fabulous way to try....many succeeded. Going cold turkey CAN cause health problems (extreme stress that leads to many just as bad health problems)......
Pfizer Pharmaceuticals has just had a new drug for smoke cessation approved that is very interesting. It may be worthwhile going to pfizer.com and reading about it. If it sounds like it may help, call your doctor and get a prescription. Nicotine patches and gum help also.

Most people can quit, but it sometimes takes a few attempts.
Good luck
It-s not easy to quit smoking so if your looking for a quick easy solution, it-s not out there.
Even if you use other medical means to help you, it will only help the addiction part but not the habit.
It-s the habit smokes that are a killer.
Just tell yourself the first week will be hell and then it will only get easier from there and whatever you do, no matter how confident you get, don-t ever have that -just one-.
There is a site called Quit Net. Has much advice, chat rooms, clubs and post sites where you are not alone and have 24/7 support with people in the same boat as yourself.
All I can say is, if I can do it, you can do it too.
Good Luck!
You need to really commit. This site has helpful info.
My mother was a heavy smoker. She went cold turkey. It is hard for the first couple hours, and then even harder for some time, but hard physical activity kept her mind off. It just takes sheer will.
There are many ways to quit smoking. Different approaches work for different people.

My father quit smoking last year after he was recommended a product by Rick Beneteau.

He gave it a try and he managed to quit smoking within one month. Our family is very proud of him because his health has greatly increased (my mom especially, because now she has more money to buy more fancy shoes, lol).

Anyways, I hope this product can help you too, all it takes is a little will power.
I quit -cold turkey- 10 years ago. Since you have a tendency to anger when you have tried to quit in the past, I wouldn-t advise the cold turkey method.

Of course you can-t stop - nicotine is an addictive drug.

SUPPORT GROUP - trust me on this one; in addition to other remedies available on the market (nicotine patches), this is the best advise I can give you. You can not go through this alone. Join a support group; look on the Internet for one. Tell your family, friends, and co-workers about your intentions to quit cigarettes and ask them for their support.

P.S. For awhile, I chewed a lot of gum and lollipops. I wish you the best and good luck!
First you have to make your mind up to quit. Decide you really hate this habit. Maybe you can find a friend to quit with you and help you be more accountable. When I quit I started with patches. That lasted a week, I then went cold turkey. Chewing gum does help, chewing on carrot sticks. It is a hard habit to kick. The hardest part is to make your mind up that you really hate this habit and you really want to quit. Stop enjoying it. Good luck! Smoke free for five years.
I would suggest cold turkey and to get yourself a membership in a gym or health center to help work off your withdrawal symptoms
Just quit and handle what takes place. If you can;t do that,...your weak.
Don-t be so stupid. Just stop it. It always makes me angry when I-m in any public place where there is smoking allowed, especially in a restaurant and the kids are shut up in the smoking section with whoever is smoking and is too inconsiderate to stop smoking long enough to eat. Plus, it stinks. And yes I used to smoke for about 13 years. When my husband and I met, he asked me to quit and I did. It-s just too nasty not to quit.
I suggest that you get the book Prescription for nutritional healing by BALCH AND BALCH. located in the Vitamin world store is where i first purchased this book.

Read the beginning of the book as it will explain the reason for the book and how to use the book It is very very important so you do not hurt your book.
I also suggest that you get an anatomy book and start to understand your body.

start looking for pictures of diseased lungs on the internet The American Lung Association has some great inspiration photos that I suggest that you hang all around your house for support.

You need immediate assistance in detoxing your body of the nicotine, and other chemicals. The Prescription for Nutritional Healing Book will help but I suggest that you see a Nutritional Doctor that is credible. When you look for this doctor as him to give you names and phone of patients that can give him reference. Those will be your best judge of his or her knowlege.

I am now 46 and have been giving my body as much fresh vegetables and fruit that I can get my hands on I look and taste the raw forms of food to see if my tongue and nose approve I suggest food that is from the earth in raw form because it has the most vitamin and mineral content. If the food doesnt look and smell healthy it probably is not.

Again your body needs detoxification which takes time , plan to give yourself a break to rest and concentrate on healing any damage to your lungs, heart, facial organs.

You can do it You have to go through the detox process and I guarantee that you will look back someday and be so proud of yourself.
I went through the stages that are make this moment your priority and go to a health store with a good nutritional doctor and heart and lung specialist.
good luck Stay away from all environment that produce smoke or toxins to let your body start to heal.

sincerely DeeDee
Throw away all your money. Burn what you can, and toss the rest of the coins out the window while driving at a high rate of speed. This will reduce the likelyhood of frequent smoking material purchases.

Wear handcuffs behind your back.

Try using military duct tape across your mouth. You may gain a side benefit through the loss of unwanted weight.

Sleep with your face in an ashtray.
Mind over body!
Sometimes your body needs it though. MAybe you can substitute it for a lollypop, just so you-ll have something in your mouth, and about the nicotine addiction, maybe those patches. I really don-t know. I don-t smoke. But i think that if you keep focused and recognize your attitudes your body responses to the withdrawal that you can change it, or maybe distract your mind from it.
I smoked for 17 years too and it was tough to quit. I have quit a few times, and gone back (unfortunately). But I have been smoke free for 2 plus years now. I stopped cold turkey, threw away my last pack. It was HARD to not get more and start up again. It takes alot of willpower and years of dedication, before it just calms down. One thing that helped me when I was craving was to take vitamin B3 (niacin). It makes you not want to smoke. It does sometimes have a small reaction/side effect of a sort of a -flush- but it calms nerves and makes you feel pretty good. Good luck! You have already taken the first step to quiting....
throw away ur cigarette packet and dont buy more
The most sucessful way to sto smoking is to stop smoking. - Cold Turkey- is the way to go. I did it after 20 years of smoking and yes , I was not a nice person to be around for the first week . The motivation lies in the reasons you want to quit.,remember them and If you really want to quit... then U will.
Personal will power. No gadgets or memberships will cure you.

Be in control of your body, dont let your body be in control of you.
Have you tried medical help? There-s a lot of things out now to help people quit. Try cutting back and smoking less and less each day. This seems to help a lot of people. Just keep trying and don-t give up...try, try, try and one day you will succeed. Good luck!!
You cannot stop until you are ready. Just telling yourself you need to quit is not enough. You have to believe you can do it so you are not ready. I know, I-ve been there. I quit after 21 years and it was easy. I was sick of smoking and I knew I was ready. I resisted cravings by taking Wellbutrin prescribed by my doctor. Self talk helped too. Smoking is a psychological addiction as well as a physical one. Psyching yourself up is more than half the battle. Good luck.

Any ideas on some coping mechanisms? My biggest concern is breaking the behavioral issues, like always smoking in my car. I-m trying to find behaviors to replace my smoking behaviors. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
I chewed a ton of sunflower seeds when I wasn-t chewing gum. That helped through that first week. But realize once you-ve gotten in your car a few times without smoking that that association dies away pretty quickly. I thought I-d never be able to drink coffee again but I found it tasted better with the smokes. The biggest obstacle is the fear that you have thinking you can-t do something with cigarettes. But it-s very empowering when you realize you can.
congrats.I quit smoking on october of last year .I chewed gum, sucked on hard candy, and just simply kept busy.keeping yourself distracted from it is the best way.If I felt a need to smoke I would go for a walk in the park, get on the computer,go out with a friend just keep busy.Good luck.
Congrats my friend Almost your first anniversary. If you have survived this far keep up qhatever you are doing. I quit cold turkey after smoking 3 pkgs of 25ès per day Sept 25, 1991 at 8:30pm. Welcome to the non smoker-s club
My friend-s dad bought tic-tacs in bulk and ate them constantly. He-d always have a bunch of packs all over the house, in the car, and always one in his pocket. It worked pretty well for him!
congrats. on your attempt!try chewing gum,and when you catch yourself dwelling on not smoking, grab a pencil and hold on it til you break it,lol.good luck!!
that-s my birthday :)-

good for you! listen to music while driving.

Im thinking about quitting smoking. People who have quit, how long does it take for the cravings to stop? -

I-ve only been smoking for 2 years, 15-20 a day. Has it done damage already after only a short time? I want to give up for health and the money. But i really like it. How will i quit?
The cravings faded pretty soon - weeks - but the habit was hard to break. I found I had to change my routine so I wasn-t expecting the after-dinner cigarette, the coffe break cigarette etc. After 25 years, I still dream about it sometimes but not often.

I used to tell myself I really liked smoking but the truth is I really feared the challenge of giving up. The way I manged it was by NOT giving up but by simply saying I will not have a cigarette FOR NOW. I kept a packet with me for 3 months and told myself I would have one if I really, desperately had to and absolutely could not resist any longer. Since my ego would never let me be beaten by stick of tobaco, I am still not smoking.

Can you imagine anything more stupid than paying good money for a wad of vegation, wrapped in paper that you put in your mouth and set light to? What genius came up with that idea? If someone asked you to burn a bundle of money, you-d think they were daft but that is what we do. Worse still, it makes us ill or in some cases kills us. On top of that, it makes us stink. Our clothes stink, our breath stinks ... that-s not how I want people to think of me. Don-t suppose you do either.

When you give up, your body and your mind will play tricks on you. You will find yourself thinking that, if I feel this bad, I-ll just have one cigarette ... how can it possibly be worse than feeling like this. Please do not believe these lies your addiction is telling you. I saw my addiction as a parasite inside me whose only purpose was to survive by fair means or foul.

Please stop now, not tomorrow, not when you finish this pack. If you find that difficult, it just goes to show how right you are to stop and to never give in to temptation. I really wish you well. You can beat the evil weed because, like the adverts say: You are worth it.
It takes a long long time - it took me about 2 years to give up fully. And then the cravings lasted about another 2 years after that. The worst time for me - when I got the cravings - was when I had access to alcohol - or coffee. But I haven-t smoked for nearly ten years now and I was smoking 15-20 a day for about ten years before that. I tried everything to quit, but you know how did it? Sheer mental will power and endurance. Personally, I don-t think anything else will work. This is what did it for me: someone asked me if I liked the thought of being a slave. I answered, -no-, I did not, and then that person told me that nicotine is like a slave driver - it has control over you - it makes you go out searching for tobacco at all times of the day or night, it makes you crave the nicotine. So do you want to go through your life being the slave of nicotine? If you don-t, then tell yourself, everytime I get an urge I will disobey. I will start a rebellion with the voice that is telling me to smoke. Be strong and endure. And for every cigarette that you don-t smoke, put some money (whatever it would have cost you) into a jar. By the end of the year, you would have saved enough for a fortnight-s vacation in the Bahamas. Think about it. Wouldn-t you rather have control over IT? Also, about the damage that may have been done. The good news is this: after 10 years, your lungs have the ability to clear themselves up and return to the same condition that they were in before you started smoking. If I were you, I would take that journey to a clean bill of health starting now...
Ok,15-20 cigarettes a day has probably done some damage,so you should probably quit unless you want to get lung cancer or emphysema.
As for how long the cravings are there,I have no idea.My parents smoke and every time they start to quit they end up having at least half of one a day. So,must be kind of persistent.But,it-s different for everyone.I suggest whenever you have a craving, you should chew some gum.It-s a lot cheaper and helps distract you. A single pack of gum in a gas station can be like, .50 to $1. =]
every cigarette does damage but it is better to stop now, it can only get worse.

my dad just stopped. he threw ashtrays away and refused to smoke, with willpower you can do it that way.

also, if you do more exercise/a sport it should take your mind off it, my dad cycled like mad and its been 2 years now, hes still enjoying cycling, he says he likes the smell but he doesnt want to smoke.

my mum, is trying to give up and tried the nicorette patches and stuff but said theyre discusting with the taste they leave in your mouth or something?

id suggest doing something new to take your mind off it, meet new people, go somewhere? start a new sport? do some kinda project? be inventive :)

my advice to anybody reading this, dont try your first cigarette
i smoked 20 a day for 40years i gave up smoking 8 years ago the first 2 weeks were the worst but the benefit to my health was amazing i could breath properly again i had cravings for about a year after, but after that i had no problems and the craving was gone,so best of luck i hope you can beat it.
I have quit for over a year now after smoking 15-20 a day for 14 years.

The hardest time was the first month. But I found it very easy after that because I must of really wanted to stop. I also used the inhalators.

You will crave for the rest of your life just to warn you. BUT the craving gets easier and easier. But it doesn-t go away.

I believe the whole body recovers. Well I personally believe that the lungs- small hairs that has been damaged with smoke do NOT improve or recover. Don-t know why I think that - I hope I-m wrong!
It took me about a week to get over it, I smoked for 15 yrs, prior to that. According to all the doctors it didn-t do me any damage but everyone is different, so who knows what it may have done to you.
here you can find how to quit smoking easy
i quit almost a year ago and still crave them
i usually just find something to keep me occupied though
they-re not bad cravings anymore
I-ve quit 2 years and I still get cravings every now and then. You just need willpower and determination
It has been over a year and I still crave them but the craving last about 10 seconds
Never could give up, tried often, would be going nuts after a couple of hours.

Went into hospital a few years ago for a serious op, couldn- t get any cigs except for a couple I cadged outside during the first couple of days.

the recovery from the op a few weeks later was going to be helped by not smoking.

So I did stop, after the couple of cigarettes on the first two days I didn-t have any more and it didn-t bother me because I didn-t have any access to cigarettes, so I just stopped thinking about them and after the first 3 or 4 days I was amazed to find that I didn-t even want one.

It wasn-t that I was exerting any huge effort of willpower, I wasn-t exerting any at all, I was just in a situation where I had no means of access to cigarettes so I had no choice but to accept the situation and once I did that, I found that I stopped thinking about cigarettes.

Once you stop thinking about cigarettes you don-t seem to experience any craving, I-m convinced that the craving is a mental thing.

If somebody had offered me one I wouldn-t have been interested and when I went outside and there was anyone smoking it didn-t bother me, the only emotion I felt in that situation was one of pity for the smokers.

also I could smell cigarette smoke from a distance and it turned me off.

People make much of the nicotine craving effect, but I don-t believe it, I think it has much more to do with the conditioned Pavlovian type response of automatically reaching for a cigarette whenever you feel like it, most smokers don-t even want to smoke and don-t enjoy smoking very much, it-s a repetitive compulsive psychogical habit.

People have pointed out that when drug addicts are released from prison they will not be under the effects of drugs so there is no chemical compulsion to start using drugs again but many do start using drugs again and this usually happens when they return to their old haunts and mix with their former aquaintances, it-s a mental addiction, not a physical one.

I once heard a doctor who specializes in treating addictions say, that nicotine was far more addictive than heroin, well I-ve never used heroin, but I believe him.

I lasted three months and never had the slightest desire to have a cigarette, and in fact I actually enjoyed being in the vicinity of people who were smoking, (apart from the smell ), because it reinforced the pleasure I felt at not having any desire to have a cigarette, and then I started to come under a lot of stress, from things that were beyond my control, not health related though.

One day I was going home and I was feeling under pressure from all the stress and I just wanted a little respite, and I decided to have a couple of cigarettes, well, one cigarette and I was hooked.

So the only method I can suggest to you that I know works for certain is to try and get yourself into a situation where you are in a remote location with no means of transport available for about a week, and no means of access to cigarettes, you will be amazed and astonished how quickly you will forget about smoking when you can-t get any cigarettes.

A friend of mine once said that his wife had found hypnosis to be very effective.

All this stuff about cutting down gradually, well it might work for some people, but personally I reckon it is just a form of self torture, I think it should be an all or nothing approach, it-s already difficult enough to stop smoking without tormenting yourself whilst you-re doing it.

You either smoke or you don-t, that-s my opinion.

As for all of the holier than though types who love to be critical and judgemental about smokers and their inability to quit, and who love to look down on smokers, I say this to them, try it yourself before you get so self righteous, what things do you fail at ?.

As for the health benefits, they say that within a year your risk of heart disease and stroke falls by about half, or something similar, the figures are pretty huge anyway.

I also noticed that I slept much better and didn-t feel so tired during the day.

Whats the best way to quit smoking? -

I never realized how addicting it was until I tried to quit. Is there any methods other than patches or pills that I can use or do?
Ween yourself off is the best. Cold turkey will just drive you back to smoking, because it will drive you crazy so fast, you-ll want one, and you-re hooked again. Just start off with a number, and work your way down each week until you hit zero.
I quit a few months ago - after 20 years, except for pregnancy. Well my husband quit talking to his parets and it has been an incredibly hurtful and stressful situation for years. The proverbial straw finally broke the camels back and we broke off all contact. On a day when I heard particularly hurtful information, I just said, -OK, that is enough.- And I quit smoking! I just had to let go of hurting myself and turn it into a positive.

But, I did tell my husband that in 14 years when my child is 18, he can find me drinking beer and smoking a cigarette. So anyway, it is just a final decision and a simple decision that you will not pick up a cigarette no matter what. It simply is not an option. Also, honestly, I wrote it down that I wanted to quit a year ago in a journal. I believe that writing things down does something like make it real or permanent or something. So this year, for my once a year entry, I wrote that I want to lose 10 pounds. We will see.

But I do miss it. Missing it and doing it are two separate things. When I got pregnant and quit, it was the easiest thing in the world, I never even considered smoking. But as soon as she was born, I wanted to smoke again. How odd is that? Also, I can-t imagine drinking again without smoking.
when u feel like u want to smoke suck a lollipop or chw a gum also u may want to change ur hobbits(EX: u get up inthe morning ang go to smoke istead try to drik a tea or go ro a walk) try to plan ahead for the day. Watch a movie about how bad smoking is. and count all the money u spending on that.

Are there any herbal options to help quit smoking? -

I quit smoking on New Years and this is pretty rough. After 18 years of smoking, chemical dependence really has a grip on me. I heard that there are some herbal treatments that can help. Anyone know any?

No... I am not interested in advice that involves SMOKING herbs :)

Thanks in advance!
Eating licorice helped me.....I know there must be articles on it because that-s how I found out about it. It worked for me, as well as eating sunflower seeds (sunflowers have nicatine in them)
Yogi detox tea helped me to on another quit.
Exercise, and on different quit I had going for 2 yrs. was nicorette gum
Yes, it-s also time for me to quit again too.
Good luck YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
It DOES get easier
Go to -Blairsville.com-/smoking support board.
When I went on there, they had helped me tremendously to quit smoking....it really works too.
ok so let me get this right.. you are telling this person what to use to quit that didn-t work for you??? Try using some integrity, thats like being 100 pounds overweight talking about being physically fit. This may be one of the most hypocritical answers I have ever come across!!!

A person who is overweight may be very informed and knowledgeable about being physically fit or healthy...some people don-t practice what they know or how genetic disorders etc...that does not mean they are not educated.

A doctor doesn-t have to have experienced first hand a cure for cancer to know what to do to help etc. I-m overweight but how studied alternative health 28 years and I-ll stack my knowledge against the average person or size anyday. I took offense to your comments.

also the person didn-t say it didn-t work, just that they restarted for unknown reasons which may have had nothing to do with how they quit. Some smokers like my dad and brother had to quit numerous times before they stopped permanently.

Each time they learned something new..give them some credit for stopping or trying to..I hope they both try the remedy I listed below..it has a proven success rate and the licorice in it is not the same as candy licorice BTW..

By the way, Crystal, you gave a good answer..hyponosis is how my brother finally stopped and it-s been at least 15 years for him and maybe he will not have to go through the awful death from lung cancer like my dad did..and,

of course, lobelia is the herb..it is even nicknamed Indian tobacco..it has similarities to the nicotie that helps but desn-t addict. Great answer.. I hope both those two quit..for good..they will never regret it..I quit 30 years ago..

Good job trying to quit. Studying herbs was one of my hobbies before. But I can-t recall seeing anything about quitting smoking. I-ll tell you when I find out. Good luck!
No, I quit smoking 13 years ago after smoking 4 packs a day for 20 years. I had dizzy spells for 6 months and it almost drove me crazy but I finally got over it. I still consider myself a smoker who hasn-t had a cigarette in 13 years, but the urge is still there and it is a daily struggle not to smoke. Every time I have an urge to smoke, I picture in my mind what my lungs looked like and me dying far to early.
In several scientific studies these herbs
have been associated with successful smoking cessation:

St. John-s Wort (for mild to moderate depression),

Kava Kava (may help with anxiety),

Valerian (may help with sleep problems),

Licorice (may help reduce stress),

and a Chinese herbal nasal inhaler
called Smoker-s Herbal Aroma
(may help reduce cravings).
go to yahoo india they would know
try avena licorice compound by herbpharm.

this caused a 30 year smoker I know to quit and have no cravings for at least 5 days. He kicked the habit. good luck! It is the lobelia in the formula that is most helpful..
try lobelia also if it gets realy bad download a hypnosis cd online for smoking cessation.. thats all i have done is lobelia for the 1st 2 days then the hypnosis and i have had very few cravings and i had been smoking for 11 yrs.. best of luck to ya
I think people are always after an easy solution to something - me too. But nothing easy is worth having.

A herbal treatment will not be a patch on medical treatments - nicotine patches, nicotine gum etc.

My own personal belief on it, is do it slow. Say you smoke 20 a day, cut to 19. Do it until you don-t notice one missing. Then cut to 18..

It might take months, but it-ll be worth it right?

How did you quit smoking ? ? And how can i ! ? -

I-m only 21 but I have been smoking a pack a day since I was 15. I-ve tried to quit about 4 times using the nicotine patches. The longest i-ve quit for has only been a day. I don-t know why I just can-t do it. I-m really shy and always smoke in any social situation. I also always smoke when I-m bored. I don-t see how I am ever going to stop. I-m wondering what methods other people have used to quit ! ? Help ! !
Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
you know, I started smoking when I was about, 13 or so. When I decided to quit, I left the pack in one place of my house, usually upstairs, or on the opposite end of the house of where I usually hung out, and whenever I thought about having a cigarette, I would do something else, like clena my room, or watch TV, or wash the dishes, usually clenaing was my way of getting over the thought of smoking. Then, by the time I was done, I was worn out and didnt want to smoke. It went pretty well, at least I quit cold turkey for 6 months, until I started up again with an ex. It took a month before I picked back up again, but, if you stick with it, then its alot easier.
It is a very real thing. I have had many friends in your situation. I have seen devastating effects of this drug. Some people use nicotine patches or gum. There are also some organizations like Quit Smoking Today that have great success numbers. I have never dealt with a problem like this myself, but Quit Smoking Today seems effective. There are some hypnosis methods, but I am disbelieving that they actually are worth the money one pays for them. I am glad that you have a will to stop smoking. This link will take you to the page if you care to use it. Best of Luck, sincerely.

I wish you sincerely success in quiting. I smoked about 200 cigarettes at the most over a eriod of 3 months at the most. i thought it cool and grown up. i was 18 at the time and started to smoke more and more. I stopped when I started to like it more and have not smoked over 42 years.. I was stupid to start as I have had asthma for the last 57 years. Try nonsmoking clubs, nicotine patches, counselling for your shyness. It sounds as though you have low esteem problems. I have as well. Email me. I wish you success.. You can do it. I believe you can do it
I tried for years to quit smoking. Nothing worked. NOTHING. Smoking was always just so... I don-t know. Enjoyable? Anyway. I quit recently. It might be worth checking this out. I highly recommend it.

edit: cliff5550 is right about the e-cigarettes. I-ve heard they are effective.
Go to the e-cigarette-forum
I smoked for 40+ years and was up to nearly 3 packs a day. I haven-t smoked one tobacco cigarette since I started smoking SmokeStik. Go to this forum site. There are many, many other forms of e-cig - and they work. I also tried the patch and even tried Chantix. This is the only thing that saved my breath and extended my life.

Tips on how to quit smoking? -

I-ve been smoking for several years and have decided to quit. I-m also writing a speech on it for one of my classes.

I-m really sick of tips from websites and from people who have never smoked. They usually don-t know what they are talking about.

I want to hear from smokers. People who have successfully quit. And people who have relapsed. What methods have worked best for you. What hasn-t. And why do you think they have or haven-t helped.

Thanks
=)

~Raven
Honestly, you know that quitting is hard. Quit now, and if and when you relapse, quit again. You have infinite chances. Every day you spend not smoking will add up to years on your life. It takes time to quit, to essentially re train your brain to seek out something else instead of that cigarette. Start to replace the smokes with things that you really love, that are relaxing and stress relieving. If you lapse, and have a smoke, don-t beat yourself up. Learn form it and put it behind you. Quitting starts out as a process. I don-t know anyone who has quit once and had it work out perfectly for them. The length of time that you stay quit will grow and grow until it is years, and then you will realise that you don-t even think about smokes.
I quit smoking after more than 20 years and several attempts. The thing that worked for me was reading, -The Easy Way To Quit Smoking- by Allan Carr. I-m not sure why it worked, I was obviously ready to give up the stinky, smelly, disgusting, expensive habit. It will soon be a 1 full year!!!! Good luck with giving up your habit.
its all about what method works for you. it could take many tried.. or it could just take 1. my mom stopped after 30 years cold turkey. i-ve tried many times and faild! lol. you just have to really be ready to quit. not just wake up one morning and say :- i-m gonna quit today- try first by lowering what you smoke per day even when you buy a pack throw a couple of them away... keep track of how much money you speand ont hem and what else you could be doing with that money.

good luck!!!!!!!!
Go to youtube and watch some videos about cigarrettes and smoking.

How do i convince my husband to quit smoking? -

How do i convince my husband to quit smoking? -

You can-t.
If he doesn-t decide for himself, then he-ll never quit.
Quitting is hard enough without having someone nagging at you. He must be totally convinced and totally committed to even stand a chance of stopping.

However, as and when he is, you might ask him to read this.

Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.
Your husband needs to realize how much he means to you and the reason you want him to quit is because you care about his health and you want to be with him for a long time. We are all people of choice and that-s what makes life in our control, we like to make our own decisions. He needs to come to a decision for himself to quit but definetly keep trying and don-t give up because you too have a choice to keep your husband in good health and you have the choice to make deals, get angry, be annoying, burn plastic in the livingroom when she lights up a cigerette in the house.......ohh sorry that-s the stage I-m at now. Good luck and let me know what broke the -camels- back, no pun intended.

TIPS FOR QUITTING

Quitting smoking can be a difficult but very rewarding decision for you and your friends or family. To help you begin living your life smoke-free, review the following tips for success.

Think about your reasons for quitting. Write them down and carry them with you. You can read them every day or when the going gets tough.

Choose a good time to quit and set a quit date. Stick with it. Sign a contract. Announce it to family and friends who support your decision.

Think about when and why you use tobacco. Do you use tobacco for a pick-me up? When you are bored? When you are angry, upset, worried? When you are driving your car? When you are with others who are using tobacco?

A couple of weeks before your quit date, wrap your cigarette pack with paper, pencil and rubber band. When you smoke write down the time of day, how you feel, and how important that cigarette is to you. This can help you identify your reasons for smoking.

Have a plan before you quit. If you use tobacco for a pick-me-up, plan to exercise or take a walk instead. When you-re bored, plan to call a friend, listen to music, go for a walk, play with your pet, JUST GET BUSY! When you-re upset, angry, or worried, call a friend, write it down, or talk to someone you trust.

Think good thoughts. -I will do this.- -I-m worth it.- -I-m in control.- -I-m proud of myself.-

What if you smoke after quitting? This does not mean you-re a smoker again- do something now to get back on track. Don-t punish yourself- think about why you smoked and decide what to do the next time it comes up. You-re still a non-smoker.
i think thet this site is wery helpfull

Postpone sexual relations until he quits.
From personal experience, there is nothing you can do to make him stop smoking. Stopping smoking is a choice he will have to make for himself and one that he must know for certain is the right choice.

There may come a time when he will realize this, that is when you can step in and be as supportive as possible. In the mean time you can express how much you care for him and let him come to this healthier conclusion.

When he does, I recommend a trip to the doctor and a prescription for Welbutrin (Zyban). This is a mild anti-depressant that will help him kick the habit. Give the meds a few weeks to work, then when he takes a toke... well, hopefully he will not have a full stomach. Believe me, this works! Been smoke free for 2 years now after smoking for over 20 years.
you cant it is up to him to quit, i know it can be aggravating but let him know how bad it is for him and if you have children and that is all you can do... smoknig is an addiction and it is very difficult to just quit.
I-m going through the same thing with my boyfriend - he-s getting there!
tips: get a book on quitting smoking from the library and put it under his nose. Also explain all the health dangers - lung cancer, mouth cancer, peripheral vascular disease.
and the social -dangers- - bad breath, smelly clothes and hair, stained yellow teeth.
Finally; explain how all public places are going to have no-smoking bans imposed within the next couple of years no matter where u are in the western world..
the whole world is turning anti-smoking!
good luck with that one, Ive been trying for 8 years now to get my hubby to quit be he says hes not ready and as long as im nagging him he wont quit. i guess its something you have to want to do yourself.
How daring are you willing to be?

the reason i bring this up is I knew a guy who dated this girl who smoked and could not stop.

he told us that one night, after she lit up, he unzipped his pants and whizzed on her pack of cigarettes and left the house in silence.

She stopped smoking that night for him (and for herself)
stop nagging him, it-s only gonna nerve him and need another one.
He-ll quit when he-s ready, and then you can offer support.
do the math on how much he spends on cigarettes in a yr and go for a goal of something he really wants and see how long it willtake to save the money if he quits.
Go to this web site it has a lot of information on the dangers of smoking. Hope it helps. Thanks for the points.

http://www.ti.ubc.ca/pages/letter21.htm

show him a picture of the lungs of a long time smoker with cancer or any other lung problems , if that dosent stop him, then ur out of luck cause its up to him to quit its as bad as smoking crack
Maybe you have something that he really likes. Maybe you could work out a deal.
Can-t give you a definitive answer since I don-t know what kind of person he is. A friend of mine just found out that his kid is allergic to nicotine/tobacco smell. Knowing the type of person he is, I knew the moment he told me that he-s going to try his damnedest to quit.

http://www.itk.ca/health/cancer-message-…

check that out
No amount of convincing can get him to stop. We can-t change others, we can motivate and hope they change on thier own, but we just can-t do that for them.
he must be addicted to it now, although you can make a rule that there is no smoking in the house because if he wont stop his smoking is harming you too, also your kids and pets if you have them.
If you dont have kids and he wants them let him know that smoking reduces your sperm count

Has anyone quit smoking with chantix? -

First, congratulations on deciding to quit!!! It-s the hardest thing you will ever do in your life, but definitely will be worth it every day that you can breathe. I quit using chantix almost two years ago, and every time i see someone coughing, smoking, whatever, i thank God i finally was able to quit. One thing i want to tell you is pay close attention to the side effects and do a lot of research because many people have had some serious side effects on it and it has cost a few their lives.
Now that that is out of the way, you should quit as soon as you think you can handle it. I won-t tell you that the withdraw will be completely gone, but it will be so much better than you have ever experienced before if this is not your first time quitting. I quit 5 times before i finally was able to do it with the chantix. I used the patches, the smoke away pills, everything. Nothing worked and i was absolute hell to be around when i was quitting. But with the chantix, the withdraw was so mild that i was finally able to get through it completely and never looked back. I only took about half of the recommended dose because i did a lot of research on the medicine and it scared me. I also only took it for two months at half the dose. But by the third or fourth day of taking the pills, i was ready to just not smoke anymore. It suddenly lost the pleasure it used to give me. It was amazing. Good luck, stick with it, even if it gets hard. I swear it will be worth it!!!!!!
I tried but the side effects were too much. Read up on depression before you decide to take it.

How did i quit smoking? -

I LOVE smoking ciggys, but 3 days ago i decided i was not going to buy any more ciggys and i haven-t. i am dying for a ciggy but for some reason my body will not let myself drive to the gas station and buy a pack. How and why did this happen? I didn-t even want to quit, i still drink coffee, and stit out side on my -smoking- chair, my friends give me no support. I dont understand??
i had the same thing happen to me when i used to chew ( like skoal). i just couldnt do it anymore, i see it and it makes me sick. sometimes when i play golf with friends it pops up and i like to have one, but i havent bought one in almost a year, unless i was drunk. i really liked chewing, and i still like the idea of it, but its not for me any more.
well at least you did stop smoking!
I don-t know how that happened but I wish it would happen to me. Tell your friends you don-t care what they think. You will smell better and live longer now that you quit. Keep it up! :)
Trying to quit smoking is like trying to lose weight. Easy concept, Hard to follow. Its all a matter of will power :)
cold turkey.......harder at first but the fastest..cheapest way
Good for you for quitting! I am in the process also and don-t really know where to turn for help. It is a personal agony of sorts. Congrats on your 3 days without and treat yourself to something nice with the money you saved not buying ciggys. Biggest thing, is don-t pick one up. Best to you in your efforts.
When that happened to me, I found out the reason -- I was pregnant!

If not, maybe you-re just very lucky.
I love smoking too, thats why I will never stop. But, like once a year, I will instinctively stop for a week or two.
You realized what-s right, and what-s not. Keep it that way. Good job that you quitted. It-s probably something sub-consiously.

I don-t want to take pills or anything...what is the easiest way to kick the habit?? What are some home remedies to cleanse you body of the nicotine? How long will it take before I am totally a non-smoker??

I quit smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

Hey umm... What i would do is to have a limit on how many ciggerettes to have! and lower down each week and do some more active stuff like jog a mile!to get the exersize at least to gain back it from smoking! I think it will take 3 months maybe......it depends on how you are.
think of the consciences of smoking .
Don-t buy any cigs. Mind over matter. Don-t smoke. Completeley stop doin git. Find another addiction that isn-t bad for you. Drink a lot of water.
There are no shortcuts mate..but these routes may help-
1) make up your mind and stay focused imnportantly by your decision
2) reward yourself with -points- (that could culminate at the end of say 3months with some reward like a watch or clothes that you would saveoff than spending on cigarettes)
3) hang around buddies who dont smoke..very basic but important, you got to learn to refuse a smoke offered by say your pal when you chill out
4) when you get the itch in your mind/urge to puff- just get busy..do some activity that would distract your mind or leave that chair or room just for a minute to get a glass of water or fresh air outdoor
5) dont stay alone for long periods of time..boredom rubs in the habit of smoking
6) assess yourself at the end of the week in a logbook that you may keep- every week that passes by would make your mind more fresh and actually would make you feel younger- only beware of a possibly inceasing appetite!!
7) start preaching to others the ills of smoking..that would help in -cleaning- your mind as well from the habit
Lastly..believe in yourself that you would overcome it- many many have done it before and you know smoking kills- you have only one life to live, might as well enjoy it as much as you can rather than spend the last few months in a cancer ward.
You know something?..one doesnt smoke a cigarette (or whatever..)- they are just suckers of disease! ha-ha
Cheers and goodluck mate
Having a full glass of water when you get the urge to smoke, I also brushed my teeth at those times...don-t really know where I got that idea from, but it worked.
January 1, 1987 I had my last cigarette at 1am, after smoking a pack-a-day for over 20 years. Try the following. It will work. You don-t even need good luck.
Local hospitals offer week-long programs to make you quit smoking. Then you-ll need this trick to not go back to it: Don-t have that one cigarette for the rest of your life!
People buckle under the intense urge for a cigarette and think that their problem will go away with one cigarette. But that just makes the problem go away temporarily, only to come back with a higher intensity.
Quitting smoking feels like a loss of a loved one because to the brain it is just that - a loved one. So be prepared for the longing and the pain. Just endure it. It won-t kill you. Actually, it will make you live longer.
Adapt a new lifestyle i.e. eat fruits, go jogging, etc. Do whatever, but once you have gone through the week-long quit-smoking program, DON-T HAVE THAT ONE CIGARETTE NO MATTER WHAT. If you have that one cigarette, you fail and if you don-t then you succeed. It is that simple. You do need that week-long program to launch yourself into the wonderful world of non-smoking though.
One more thing: you may need to keep the company of non-smokers for a while i.e. at least one year.
stopping all together. take deep breaths when you have the urge to smoke and get plenty of exercise. just keep on trying and don-t give up

When you quit smoking is it normal to get depressed? -

I recently quit smoking (stopped cold turkey) and have been depressed for about a week. Is this common when people quit smoking?
I-d be depressed if I had to quit smoking.
I think that is pretty normal.
You trained your brain to see cigarettes as a panacea (a cure-all) for any kind of situation (boredom, stress, sadness, happiness).
Now that you don-t smoke your brain thinks it is missing something. You really need to train your brain again and make it realize how much better everything is without cigarettes. There are so many benefits to quitting smoking, this shouldn-t be all that hard
It happened to me. But that always happens when we force control on ourselves. But hang on a few more days and you will start feeling the opposite!
Yes, so you should constantly remind yourself that it is the nicotine exiting your system and nothing else. It isn-t you. The depression is the bad stuff leaving your body. Well done!
yeah ..this is very much common....and u wl face same situations whenever u pull urself out of an addiction..coz u force ur system to reduce the dependence on the chemicals like caffeine or nicotine or nething similar...
very normal. one may also feel anger, annoyance, nervousness
Only if your weak minded,
now tell me are u getting depressed???
yes its common, keep busy but not too stressed and you-ll get over it
my doc put me on a low dosage of antidepressant when i quit. its pretty normal. keep going; it gets easier.

I want to know about this lazer treatment to quit smoking? -

I-ve done some research on this and lasers do seem to help SOME people quit smoking. As with all things, the success rate varies with the determination of the individual.
Laser therapy is considered a non-medical procedure. Treatment with low-level laser helps to promote the release of endorphins in the body. Endorphins are natural chemicals in your body that signal your system to decrease stress and increase energy.

A low powered (soft) laser is used to treat nicotine addiction no more powerful than a 20-watt light bulb. Energy points related to addiction are identified and treated with a combination of a helium neon laser and electrobiostimulation. The entire procedure is external, non-invasive, and non-thermal. Laser Therapy is painless.

During the laser treatment energy points on your hands, face, and ears are treated. If a client feels the sensation from the low-level laser, they may feel a warm, pulsating and sometimes-tingling feeling. Some clients may only feel a calming sensation from the laser.

The low-level laser acts as a tool to assist the client through the initial physical withdrawals from nicotine. The first 72 hours of quitting is considered to be the crucial detoxification period. The laser mimics a similar endorphin release for a period of 3-5 days following treatment, which aids in alleviating stress associated with giving up nicotine

Will i gain weight automatically if i quit smoking? -

Will i gain weight automatically if i quit smoking? -

ive heard you gain 10-20 pounds when u quit. i was very overweight and now I am just right, I am very worried. why do you gain when you quit? WHY....is there anyway to not gain weight?
The 2 main reasons that people gain weight when they quit smoking are 1: due to the slight slowing down of the body-s metabolism when there-s no nicotine around, and 2. some people replace smoking with food.
There are a lot of other factors, such as exercise and emotions, but unfortunately the latest research to hit the headlines distorts the real truth, and that is much more pleasant. Remember so much research is done or funded by biased parties, so take everything with a grain of salt and look at the rational aspects of it. The rational facts about smoking and weight are here, plus some great free advice to follow:
http://www.quitguide.com/smoking-and-wei…

just if you replace smoking with eating, try replacing smoking with carrot sticks or gum to cure oral fixation
hi from experience i will say yes because i quit for 3 weeks and gained 4 lbs. so i started smoking again now im back down to 105. anyways. my aunt stopped smoking i believe not for certain but 5 years ago, she used to be a size 4 now she is like a size 16 i mean maybe its time gaining weight but i believe smoking made her gain weight because she ate more.

i ate more also i duno why.
Usually it-s more out of eating more. It-s about the oral fixation, and some folks will eat more to give them something to do with their mouths.
The other thing is that sometimes smoking helps speed your metabolism somewhat.
Most people seem to eat more after they quit smoking. It -fills the void- of the habit.
Just keep that in mind and find activities to keep you busy. I found the best way to quit was to change the routine I had when I was smoking. Like after you eat, get away from the table and do something. Or while driving. Find something else to occupy you. A water bottle, conversation, anything. You-ll find you have more energy anyway, and will want to do other activities rather than smoking... good luck!

What is the most successful way to quit smoking permanently? -

And remember, if you smoke cannibis, you are a smoker, whether or not you smoke tobacco.
1. Pick a good date to quit smoking.
2. Get the support of your family, friends and co-workers.
3. Be prepared for withdrawal symptoms and be sure you know the different ways to combat them.
4. Find something to replace your smoking habit like having a new routine at work or go into sports or anything that won-t make you think of smoking.

I am being forced to quit smoking, i really don-t want to but i don-t have a choice. Is there anything that can help me out? I-ve tried chewing gum, but that-s not much help. It is really the hardest thing to do and i don-t think there-s anything that can help. Any techniques would be great though. Will i ever even fully quit? or will i always keep wanting a smoke?
it-s really all in your head - YOU must decide that you WANT to stop, and you will.

gum, candy etc. will help to REPLACE the smokes, whenever you feel like lighting up. But in the end, it-s your mind doing all the work. Mental crutches do work - see below.

-Will i ever even fully quit? or will i always keep wanting a smoke?- yes, you will.
I smoked when I was young and stopped when our son was born - cold turkey, same day. Tried a cigar years later, did not taste and never wanted another smoke again.

best thing you-ll ever do for yourself and those around you!

Is there anything that will flush the nicotine from your body after you quit smoking? -

Is there anything that will flush the nicotine from your body after you quit smoking? -

Is there anything you can take to flush the nicotine out of your body when you quit smoking?
I would suggest drinking lots of water and taking two 500 mg tablets of vitamin C with each meal for a few days, then cut back gradually. Smoking destroys Vitamin C in the body, so taking a lot of it will help repair the damage that smoking did to you.

Nobody will tell you it is easy, but you really must stay off tobacco. Good luck!
nicotene is actually created by the body after a while... the fact that you smoked caused your body to stop production of nicotene... so just stick it out.... and drink lots of water...
All I know of is time, eating healthy and drinking lots of water. Clears most toxins out of the body...
I agree with GTB. Let nature take its course. You will probably get cravings for a cigarette for at least 3 weeks until the receptors on your nerve ends, damaged by the nicotine, repair themselves and your body returns to how it should be.

This is the case with all dependency drugs including alcohol and narcotics.

Drink lots of water when you get the urge to smoke or get jittery.

By the way- Congratulations on taking steps to look after your health.
Time is the best way. Eating a balanced diet, exercise, and a generally healthy life style will help markedly.

Products recommended for such actions are promoted by those wishing to sell a product. Too bad there is no sound science to back their claims.

You are to be honored for quitting tobacco use. I am sure it was hard but you will be rewarded many times over with the lesser risk to your cardio vascular system, lungs, and over all body.

Give it time and let the body to its job. Avoid the -wonder- drugs or supplements which are costly and which do no documented good.
you are about 12 because any idiot would know nicotine is not in your system you are addictted to it and your body craves it

How can i get my boyfriend to quit smoking weed? -

How can i get my boyfriend to quit smoking weed? -

You can-t -get- him to quit smoking. The only way he is going to stop is if HE wants to stop. The only thing you can do is tell him how you feel about it. If he does not want to stop, he is not going to. If it bothers you that much you need to end the relationship.
Tell him that he needs to stop smoking weed because of everything you just mentioned. He needs to go to Narcotics Anonymous and you need to go to the significant other meetings, like Alanon for AA.
If he doesn-t want to stop weed, YOU can-t make him. He has to want to do it. People won-t change unless they need to. You may have to leave him if he won-t stop, because he is becoming a different person than the one you fell in love with. If you stay with him and make excuses, then you are enabling his activities, not helping him. It will make your life pretty awful if you do stick around.
With any addiction it-s important that the addict wants to quit, otherwise they never will. I-d talk to him. Express your concerns and tell him how much he-s changed. If the weed dependency increases, it could lead onto harder drugs which pose a greater risk to a person-s health. If the addiction is becoming more severe, I would tell his family/friends to see what they have to say.

It could be that his friends are the -bad influence- - weed is very much a social drug, more so than others - so finding the root of the problem is a key issue.

Then again, it could just be that he likes to smoke it and it-s not an addiction, but more of a habit. You won-t know unless you talk to him first.
Look, the bottom line is you can-t change someone. My brother had a girlfriend he quit smoking weed for. As soon as they broke up, he started doing coke and ecstasy and basically just splurging on every drug he could get, because he felt oppressed for a long time.

Weed isn-t really a terrible thing in and of itself but if it-s getting between your relationship then you-ve gotta say something, right? Even if he doesn-t change, you-ll feel better for having tried. Just try not to be preachy. People don-t like to hear -It-s bad and you-re bad for doing it-.

(P.S. to the poster above me, NA people would laugh at you for going there if you went for weed. It-s not addictive, impossible to overdose, and people who use actual narcotics that carry some sort of risk besides your lungs hurting would just find you ridiculous.)
Well see my boyfriend does it also. He quit when I told him I didn-t like it too much when we first got together. But he picked it back up little by little. To be honest it-s not as bad as it seems. I had a horrible boyfriend before the one I have now and I-m glad that-s all he does. Look at it this way. At least he isn-t abusing you, at least he doesn-t tell you that you are ugly or fat, at least he doesn-t cheat on you. There are much worse things that he could be doing other than smoking weed. If you don-t like it tell him to hide it from you. That-s what I asked my boyfriend to do. I know he does it. But I don-t know when, where, or with who. If your too worried about it talk to him and tell him how you feel. But if I where you, I just wouldn-t worry.
you cant except somebody to change for you, they have to change for themselves before they start changing for anyone else.

the only thing you can do for now is sit him down when hes sober and tell him what your telling us.

see how he reacts.
theres not much to do for someone who doesnt want to do something for themselves.
i know its not what you want to hear but if you love him as much as you say then you-ll stay with him, high or sober and if he loves you back the same way he-ll stop or wont do it as much, if he doesnt love you enough to respect that, you already know what to do.
well technically he isnt addicted to marijuana physically because weed doesnt have the affect alcohol, cigarretes, or hard drugs have on a person..his addiction is more mental... it would take him initiative to quit so you should have a talk to him..show him how this makes u feel and come up with some sort of compromise..if this is hurtin ur relationship then u might *** well move on if he does not want to cooperate
You can-t. If he didn-t want to smoke the stuff, he wouldn-t. Your best bet is to change boy friends and find one who does not do the stuff.
That-s not the answer you wanted but we live under a great misunderstanding that if we want something badly enough, it will happen. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride comes to mind.
Sorry. It sucks but you will never change him. Give him a choice. You or the drugs. See which he picks. If he chooses the drugs over you you need to tell him to be gone,. There is no futire with this man. Imagine having kids with him in the future....then imagine them getting taken away because of the drugs in the house. Goods luck.
well I smoke and have a girlfriend too

all you gota do is smoke too!

we get along great and love each other a lot =D

girl why you even let him do that. you crazy. get a leash on the man or get out.

im a 17yr old and started smoking when i was 13.now i want to quit, and i have tried but i get headaches,i feel many thoughts are moving in my brain,i feel nervous and angry .i have also tried nicotine patch and nicotine powder .it helped for 5days but then the cravings for one more cigarette begin.now i smoke 16 to18 packets a day .PLEASE HELP ME TO QUIT !!!!!!!!!
Most importantly, make sure that you are committed to quitting ... if you secretly really don-t want to quit, it will jeopardize your chances of success. Also be sure that your family and friends know that you-ve decided to quit, so that they can support you. That said, you may want to try asking your doctor about prescribing Welbutrin. It-s been proven to reduce cigarette cravings and also minimize, if not eliminate, the majority of withdrawal symptoms. For the first few weeks of taking Welbutrin, I-d recommend weaning yourself down on how many cigarettes you smoke. Try taking 1 or 2 out of the pack at the start of the day and just increase that amount until you are down to 0. You may also try Quest cigarettes - they are low-tar cigarettes specifically to help wean you off the nicotine until you quit completely (in 3 stages). It-s important for you to reprioritize your spare time that would have been spent smoking. Try a new hobby, get out and - walk/exercise, read ... anything. Remember that cravings only last a couple of minutes ...
Also check out www.quitnet.com for additional help to quit and stay quit (forums, advice, etc). Best of luck!
Check with your doc. There is a new drug called CHANTIX (www.chantix.com). You must set an agenda, clean your house just like has been said before. Chantix will help.
talk to your doctor and see or just throw the pack away and compensate with gum or something.
Quit / doin-t start lol. will power. u-re young U have it right...
you have to do it your self i went to a school to study and its addictive you have to stop your self. try it
Pick a target date. You must COMMIT in your mind that upon that date, you are no longer a smoker. Not an -ex-smoker- but a -non-smoker-. I recommend Nicotine gum while overcoming the physical addiction, but it really is a matter of decision and discipline. Avoid situations, until you have broken the psychological addiction that will encourage it. Avoid standing with friends smoking. Replace ritual times for smoking with a new ritual. Affirm to yourself all your reasons for quitting on a daily basis. Free breathing, money saved, longer life, better overall health, no stink, which is REALLY easily picked up by non-smokers. I know this because this is how I succeeded. Hope this helps.
You just say -I QUIT- and tat-s it
stop buying cigarettes and get hooked on something like sunflower seeds that helped my cousin
You just have to play brain game with the cigarettes...as they are very strong...try to ignore the side effects and when you feel down just get an apple or any other fruit..I used to eat lots of salty seeds and my tongue used to become sore..which kept me away from the cigarettes...the most difficult is the first month and at the end of the 3rd month..once you pass them you are free from your once best friend! just prove who is the boss of your mind and body!

Many times i tried to quit smoke but just end up in a month and i don-t want to die sooner
Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying. My doc said that it will take several times to quit for REAL. So don-t feel badly, it seems that that maybe the way it is for a lot of us.

Gotta get that oral fixation satisfied. Along with the the physical psychology of holding the ciggie. The nicotine will be out of your body in 24 - 72 hours, so your brain is no longer telling you to have some more. It-s more of the physical aspects of smoking that keep us going back.

Good luck on your journey, and like I said -KEEP TRYING!-
Will power.
Some ppl say you can-t just quit -instantly-. The best thing is to take one step at a time, I mean it-s really hard to just stop smoking but the first step is to try to reduce the amount you take each day, e.g. if you used to smoke about 10 cigarettes/day, try reduce it to 8/day. The next day, you try to reduce it more.. and if you feel that you-re not too addict any longer, try to stop smoking completely, I mean try not to touch or even see a cigarette in a day. It surely very hard, but if you have the will, I-m sure you-ll be able to stop for good. Just try to be disciple with yourself. Wish you luck!!
a friend of mine kicked the habit with the patch...he says it worked wonderfully.
Andy Indian Chief, if you give up smoking how will you smoke the piece pipe?
If you feel like sticking a cigarette on your mouth, stick a lollipop instead. You can also use gum or MM-s or anything you want besides cigars. Hope it helps! :)
just dont buy them and stay away from people who smoke.
I fond the best thing was these mint like things called comitts
Friend,
I have the same question because I am very much affraid from the bad effects of this bad habit. I am smoking for the last 22 years. I have never tried to quit this habit hardly. But I will be very much thankful to the person with whom help I will overcome from this habit.
I will pray to god for every one who wants to quit this bad habbit.
NEVER OFFER AND ENCOURAGE TO ANY ONE FOR THIS THING.
You have to make a conscious decision that life is the most important thing, above secondary things like vices (whether food, smoke, or mind/body altering substances). If you are truly commited, you-ll know the time. Good Luck w/that.
just say NO
I used to work with a band, so the nightlife really turned me on to smoking... but then I decided I had to quit because I found out from a friend of mine that was a nurse that the damage smoking does to ur body is irreversible. Then I decided to quit. My friend helped me out when she told me that as long as I keep doing something for more than forty days, it-ll become a habit... well I have been a non-smoker for five years now. Good luck! You will overcome. Just Decide on it.
first of all, you have to have strong will to stop smoking.

and, makes your self busy with some positive work

try to consult with doctor, so you know what will happen with you if you still smoke.

try mint candy, because it can neutralize your smoking habit

I have smoked for almost 38 years and have COPD am trying to quit and am serious about this but I need some help. Does anyone know if these Commit Patches really work? Thanks
I have copd, emphysema, asthma and have just recently had a cat scan, then a pet scan. They found a small nodule on my lung and that is something really scary. Benign at this time thank God. I-ve also had pleurisy recently and that is something so painful you just wouldn-t believe. It hurts to even breath. I smoke and have used the patches so many times but went back to just trying 1 more cigarette so no to me they didn-t work so well. Now for the good part...go to your Dr and ask for a prescription for Chantix. To me it is a wonder drug although you can backslide on those also which I done but if you are serious about quitting then you-ll be fine. I quit for well over 6 months and back on them again now for sure. Please try this and don-t let happen to you what has happened to me. In my opinion God has given me a miracle. Good luck and please let me know how you are doing with whatever you choose.
The patches work for some people. The Commit nicotine lozenges are even better. If that isn-t enough, talk to your doctor about combination therapy, which is both patches and lozenges. Also talk to your doctor about Chantix, a pill. It is the most effective stop smoking medication known, though not everyone can tolerate it. Also keep in mind that joining a group when you use these things increases your chances significantly.

No matter how addicted you are, some combination of these things will work. Given that you have COPD, I think it-s inexcusable that you are not already receiving these or others therapies under medical supervision.
This may sound terrible to you but it worked for me, a three pack a day man. Buy a package of chewing tobacco and every time you have the urge to smoke, put a small piece in your mouth and suck on it. Do not spit.

Well now Jason...I-m a professional smoking quitter. I-ve quit many times...

1. Cold turkey - I lasted 9 months then started again while drinking.

2. Cold turkey - I lasted 16 years and thought I could have a smoke and forget it...ha, ha, it grabbed me and I was a full time smoker again in about 3 months.

2. Zyban - worked well, weird dreams but I started again after a year.

3. The patch - I tried about 5 times, once I lasted about 8 months.

4. Hypnosis - I am now smoke free since August 31, 2005. No withdrawal but I am always aware that I want a smoke but I have something in my head that says no way!

I wish I could say which worked the best, they all worked, I failed.
Don-t start in the first place!
Try jogging or stair climbing instead. You can-t do these and smoke too!

You must remember that smoking is ingrained in your lifestyle. Thus the only way to really quit is to change your lifestyle. Examine your day-to-day activities and find out when you smoke the most. Eliminate or minimize these activities first and then it will be much easier to quit smoking.
Since time immamorial, people have quit smoking suddenly.....Never try to decrease the no of cigrettes...as it never helps..Also in case you find too hard to quit it then you can try NICOTINE SHOT/PATCH......Its available with local chemists. Even I am planning to get one. Its safer and surer way to quit it.
stick a paper describing all effects of smoking on our health on the cigarette box .naturally the tendency of reading it increases and smoking decreases! try it! good luck!
Having some fairly recent experience in this matter after more than thirty years of smoking must say I tried everything! However, I finally got around to the patch that coupled with a real desire to quit did the trick and at long long long last I am smoke free. I no longer allow it in my house or car.

I just was very very very tired of smoking and was starting to wake up sounding like I was trying to cough up a lung it was ugly. I decided I was going to quit come what may went to the druggist could not do the gum I have false teeth and gum sticks to them so tried the patch and voila.

My prayers are with anyone trying to quit today. May you know great success and breath free from the vile and costly corruption for all time.

Oh oh oh and I had a mantra to that I heard from someone long ago. Every time I thought of or think of a cigarette I said, -Let the thought be fleeting and no action taken.- It really helps to refocus my energy and I actually use it as a prayer.
