I-m trying to quit smoking...yesterday I smoked one cigarette,today nothing. Beside effects I would also like to know some ways to deal with the cravings.I pretty much know some things from books or the internet,but I would like to know from real people who have experienced this.Thank you.
Have you tried one of the online smoking cessation forums? Unfortunately, I have not been brave enough or smart enough, for that matter, to lay the cigs down but I know from others that these work. Not only do the sites give you information but there are chat rooms/bulletin board type forums where you can share the experience with others, who are in the same shoes. Expect to have the cravings for quite a while because you where on a drug and parts of your body will demand it. You might want to try a anti-smoking patch for a while. But if that-s not for you get a strong rubber band and put it around your wrist. Every time you watch to smoke pull it to snap it on your arm. After a while many people have trained their bodies to not want to smoke.

There-s no easy way of giving up, but it is possible. It really all depends on how much you smoke and for how long you-ve been smoking for. There really aren-t any effects of giving up smoking apart from the cravings of course. I found it relatively easy, because I was a light smoker. The trick is to stay away from anywhere where you know people are going to be smoking for the first few weeks, e.g. bars and night clubs, and operate a no smoking policy in your own home if friends or family who are smokers visit. I found that it wasn-t so much the actual habit that was hard to beat as much as the emotional attachment to ciggerettes in social environments e.g. smoking with friends over a drink and going out for a fag in my lunch hour. If you can somehow ditatch the connection between cigarettes and good times, that-s the key I think. Different things work for different people. I personally wouldn-t recommend hypnosis or nicotine replacement products unless you smoke a great deal. Instead, get some advise from your doctor and talk to other quitters so you get as much support and motivation as possible.

I tried to quit smoking when I was in the military many times, and was not successful. However, when I got out, it was very easy. In my opinion it is best to quit when going through a big life change i.e new job or place or residence, but obviously you may not have that option. My suggestion would be to try a new hobby like running or anything else that will preoccupy you from thinking about smoking, and while at work or any other time you feel like smoking.... I guess try chewing gum.
