How did you quit smoking? -

I have just decided to quit smoking. If you have successfully quit smoking what advice can you give me?(Especially when I get cravings)
I chewed gum.
hi Drama..

i have been quit for over 5 years now using the nicotine anonymous program.. meetings are available in many locations, as well as online.. i found the support of others who were quitting, as well as the experience of people who had already quit, was just what i needed..
I ate apples because they wake you up better than a smoke in the morning and I always did activities that were hard to do while smoking,,, like biking, walking, running, trying to tie something

Weening off is the best way. That way you pace yourself to zero. Cold turkey you-ll just drive yourself and others crazy to the point to where you-ll want and start smoking again.
You might want to try those electronic cigarettes. I have alot of friends who have quit with those, and alot who use them as alternative smoking methods. So some quit with it, some smoke with it - but many have gotten away from the traditional cigarette, smells, and all of the stuff that is not wanted from smoking.

So if your interested, check out http://smoke-anywhere.org , they offer a fair price, and the product is easy to use -its not like the other ones out there which require nicotine mg vials, and dropping liquid etc. Its just simply 2 pieces, you screw it on and you smoke it - when its gone you put another on. Also it saves money, because you can smoke the equivalent of a carton for only 15$. They also have alot of flavors - regular, menthol, chocolatee, vanilla, coffee, etc.

Its quite the interesting device -- I think why this is so popular and proven to work is because its the only item out there to smoke that youactuallyy smoke, and it feels like you are smoking in the back of your throat, but without all those nasty poisons/chemicals found in tobacco cigarettes.

Something to think about it - has no smell, and no flames/ashes - this would prevent the smell most people are bothered by, and would mean no smelly ashtrays lingering either.

I have tried lozenges, and cold turkey - I acutally did it for over 8 months, but you dont acutally quit untill you quit -- and even after 8 months, i started again for several years theraefter.

This is the only method that has kept me from touching any tobacco products, and its alot more affordable then smoking - and healthier then smoking ( no tobacco, and no nasty smoke that comes with it, second-hand, etc). I use to smoke over a pack a day, and spend over 180$ a month - I am now only spending 30$ at most or so, for the refills for this thing, and I feel great. MY family is happy my wife is happy - my life is better, and I feel better. It-s win win!

Good luck on your chosen method! IT is rough, but it can be done! :)
It works for some and not for others. I did it years ago and it worked fine. There are some catches to quitting the habit and one is to keep busy and not think about smoking.

When you want a smoke try substituting a candy like life savers that lasts a few minutes (so long as you don-t chew). Without this kind of small aid you-ll lapse back to butts in no time.

Try not to get into eating a lot instead of smoking. Many do this and actually gain weight. This is a common problem as people eat when they crave a butt, but you can offset with exercise (will help breathing) and eat properly and do the candy or other substitute for a smoke.
Cold Turkey is most definitely the cheapest way.

If you-re trying to quit, that would be your first attempt.
Although I have not smoked, I think it is. My daughter quit cold turkey when she was in the hospital for surgery to get her gallbladder out. She went 11 days in there without a cigarette and when she got home they did not taste good to her anymore. My other daughter quits every time she don-t have money to buy some. lol
You will only quit cold turkey if you really want to pack up if you don-t it wont work
Good Luck anyway

Be sure you want to quit. Be really sure, as this is the most important thing.

List all the reasons why you want to quit. Then just quit cold. When you feel like smoking, review all the reasons why you wanted to quit in the first place..

You won-t go crazy. The first three days are hard, but after that, all the nicotine is out of your system and it is just remembering the old habit that makes you want to smoke once in a while. Again, review your reasons for quitting. It gets easier and easier as time goes by.

I-m clean since 1-1-99.
Thanks! Yes, it worked for me - hope it works for you. I had two really good reasons for quitting: 1) My then-GF (happily, now my wife!) coudn-t stand smokers; and 2) The doc said my sinus problems were greatly aggravated by smoking. (He was right - the sinus is better now.)

jog every day for couple of months and you can cut it back after that to every two days. I quit from 93 - 98 by doing that. Until I met my ex wife
you can look up this stuff called Chantix. It-s a new FDA approved drug that has GREAT results, a proven record of people quitting and not restarting...
go to bed and sleep, thats a good way to aviod the cravings, it worked for me!
You need to be active, you need to find some activity to keep your mind busy... chewing gum will help keeping your mouth busy. Think that you are literally killing yourself in the slowest torture way possible in this world.
u must have a courage to quit smoking!think ur family want, hear ur family want, and do it.dont quit such as extremely people, just do it slowly but sure.or i have a one idea, how if u try to stay in hongkong.ok good luck

I am wanting to know where he says you tap on your body to help you quit smoking and for how long each time or whatever.
In the Search for questions slot type in roger callahan and you will get 2 hits, the first one is your own question and the second one gives you a lot of useful information that may help you including some roger callahan websites.
The Roger Callahan tapping thing is interesting but if you really want to quit smoking I recommend this program:

Will it make me sick?
no marijuana doesnt have nicotine, only if you shop tobacco with it:) but i do suggest however, that if you already smoke weed while smoking cigs to try and quit both... that what i gotta do:( because everytime i have a bowl or a joint i always want that cig after... BUT... if you dont normally smoke weed then it will probably help you a lot while your getting use to not smoking, cuz a joint still gives you the same hand movents and stuff... the only thing is... is you might gain weight... like soo many people say you gain weight when you quit smoking because you gotta keep your hands busy lol and if you smoke weed insted of cigs you will more then likely get the munchies which means more food ingested... but whatever you do GOOD LUCK!!
lol no marijuana doesnt have nicotine. if it did i wudnt be smoking it. and its much safer than cigarettes or alcohal. and it might even help you quit smoking. gnome sayin?

EDIT how can people say cigarettes taste better than marijuana?!
lolz, interesting so you want to quit smoking and instead start smoking weed?

how is that going to help?

you better stick with cig-s

cigs will take some time to kill, weed will kill very soon...
only mind control will help you stop.38yrs smoker took over 1 year before all cravings stopped.hardest thing i have had to do in life.now i dont even want to see another cig.smoke{ weed] helps get over withdrawls.
MARIJUANA TASTES BETTER THAN ciggareetes

no nicotine in ciggarettes.

however you-ll get hella fat from quitting nicotine and starting weed.
no bb marijuana has thc cannabidol try locating a pot dealer in your area and ask him for a mild strain not to strong to start with.
good luck n quitting :) i just quit a couple weeks ago and i feel great:)
marijuana does not contain nicotine. only good old THC:D
No it doesn-t unless you put it there. I tried the patch too, but I could never keep it lit. It tasted awful when you smoked it too.
Don-t stop smoking, you love that sweet taste, and the stress relief you feel after every single one. MARIJUANA IS FOR BlTCHES! Stick with your cigarettes.

My mouth has this constant funky taste in it...maybe it-s because I-m not used to not having the taste of tabacco in my mouth?

Has any other ex-smoker had this happen?
I can-t answer you question, but I congratulate you on your success.

Quitting smoking is the BOMB.

My opinion: Things probably taste funny because your taste buds, and nose are adjusting themselves. Smoking ciggs. for years can really destroy your sense of taste and smell.

Again, CONGRATS! =D
Everything would tase metallic to me, yet some things tasted bland. After a while the food began tasting better than I ever thought it would, so I ate more. Your taste buds are cleaning themselves and re-adjusting, so to speak. Be careful and exercise, because when things began to taste good -weight gain will occur....keep on moving...your taste buds are beginning to wake up. research links below.
Congratulation on your new life style. Yes your taste buds will change and you will start smelling thing you haven-t smelled for awhile. You will start breathing better as well. It is one day at a time and one step at a time each day you may or may not notice anything. Best thing that will happen you will live a long and a healthier life.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Qui…

First...CONGRATULATIONS!!! Yes that is normal, it-s just your mind trying to get you to start smoking again. Please don-t! That sensation will go away...food will start to taste fantastic soon. I-ve been smoke free for 2 years and (almost) 3 months! Nice not having that nasty phlegm anymore! You go, you non-smoker you! Keep it up!
This is Normal it takes a few days to build back your taste buds..CONGRATS !!!!!!

We kill our taste buds from smoking and our smells everything should start tasting better and smelling better !!!!!

This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quite smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK!
I stopped smoking cigs in October 02
and the way I did it was my new bf was not a smoker, he gave me some info on what was in the tobacco and made me think twice on -lighting up-
I didnt feel right smoking around him,
and when we moved in together I decided to STOP
one day when he returned from work I told him that I want to stop and that was my last pack so dont buy me anymore cigs.
He said ok then later we went out to dinner had a few drinks n I had a few cigs but when we got home,
I decided naa I will just flush em now and get it over with.
So thats exactly what I did, he was shocked guess I was too but havnt looked back infact now I cant stand the smell, and Your nose will start to get senses back because about a week after I stopped we were driving down the road with the sunfroof open and I could smell a passerbyer{car} someone was smoking I was like wow I never smelled that before, would have never recognized that if I were still smoking.

Another thing We went on a hike and I found this stick in the river that resembled a cigarette so I picked that up and kept it with me and every time I felt like having a cig. I would take that lil stick out n hold it like a cig and know WHY I STOPPED.
My Health, My Future, My Love.
Or cinnamon sticks work well too!
I never been smoke. But my friend told me that chewing bubble gum all the time can help to make your mouth busy and forgot to smoke. To override the uneasy feeling for stop smoking, the vit C like the one cameronscami has adviced is good. By going adventure somewhere in the fresh nature also helps get rid of those nicotine that still stay in your body.
Vitamin C! This rad little vitamin helps your body chase away the nicotine faster and get you over withdrawls sooner. Using grapefruit juice (if you can stand it) also helps modifly taste in your mouth, changing little things that trigger that urge for a cigarette. You should also brush your teeth frequently to -reset- your mouth.
I quit about 6 months ago and it was rough. I had the urge to smoke for 2 months after I quit. One thing that really helped me was chewing on sticks of cinnamon. I know it sounds a little gross, but is was the one thing that helped me not gain weight (which is very common) and control my urges. Good luck and stick with it!
throw away anything smoking related, ash trays, lighters etc, patches seem to be good it worked for me, gum is also good. and stay away from smokey places. good luck, youll feel the benefit in days
I trying to quit too. I found the best way is do not have that first one. Once you have that first cig, your body wants it much more. If you can push that first oneday off, then each day just try not to have one. One is really what causes you to want another.

How long does the most mentally challenging part usually last when you quit smoking? -

Ive heard 24 hrs,3 days and 2 weeks. I would like to hear from other peoples expereinces not on what you-ve heard. 2 more hrs will be 24hrs for me am i almost past the worst part or does it get harder?
each craving lasts only 2-3 minutes and how many cravings you have per day varies from person to person depending on how much you smoked before you quit. The key is to have a plan when the craving hits, like listening to your favorite song (that just so happens to last 3min and 22sec), or do 50 sit ups, whatever... FYI exercise is a great thing to do when quitting smoking because smoking increases your metabolism and you-ll need something else to do the same thing when you quit
it really depends on how long you smoked. i smoked for 18 years and now have been a non smoker for 9 years. the hardest part for me lasted for about 2 weeks. i had to find things to do with my hands instead of holding a cig. i used the patch to quit. are you doing it cold turkey? keep busy and know it-s ok to cry (i know that sounds funny but i remember crying out of frustration) good luck to you and good health is coming
That depends on you and how much your fixating on it right now. The more you think and worry about it the harder its going to be.
Personally I found days 3 and 4 difficult. I am a month in and after that first week I havent looked back. If possible find something else to do to take your mind off it. I started running (of all things). Good Luck and congradulations on taking the first step.
Today makes 43 days for me. Thanks you, jj lol
really it does and i still have days where I wake up and want one. the first week noone wanted to be around me and I didn-t really like myself. My doctor told me if you can go for 24 hours with out one then it is a mind over matter thing. She also said that for everything to get out if your lungs, that usually takes 3 months. So I think even if you have quit for 7 years, there still may be days that the cravings are worst then others. Stick to it! Keep your chin up! You are doing a good thing here. Good luck!
the first week...
I am on my 6th day. My worst day was day # 2, after that it gets better and better, although last night I had a hard time going to sleep. That was weird, kinda felt like I was having some sort of panic attack, but today I feel fine again. I read a book by Allan Carr and he said 3 weeks is the magic number of days til you feel free.
well I-ve been smoking for, holy sh**, 11 years, wow that-s bad. Anyway I-m sure the damadge is done now but regardless, I-ve been off the butts for a week now. I dont really have any cravings, nothing unusual is happening. I think the hardest part is not smoking when you are out drinking, this I have not overcome yet. It-s not bad at all for me at work and in the car and such but when I-m out partying I make up for the week. Something about beer and smokes is just too good (I-m gross, I know) anyway good luck quitting. It will make your skin look nicer too so there-s an added bonus I guess.
You-ll feel it for a couple weeks but dont give up you-ll feel so much better.
From personal experience, it pretty much lasts your whole lifetime. I smoked at least a pack a day for about 10 years. I quit, cold turkey. Been without for at least as long, but a day doesn-t go by when I don-t want a smoke. I just don-t. I mean, when you drink a cup of coffee, you-re gonna think, maybe just for a second or two, -boy, a smoke would go great right about now- and then you stop thinking it. The trick is to just not dwell on it. You don-t have to tell yourself that you-re not getting the urge....you simply tell yourself you-re stronger than the urge. It helps to love someone...that way, you-re doing it for someone else as well....
unfortunately forever it is a constant mind struggle to quit smoking just like any other craving usually if you quit one bad habit you will pick up another usually just as bad

Is stopping cold turkey best way to quit smoking? -

i don-t smoke, but ur answer might help someone.
I quit cold turkey March 1st. It worked but I had support.
I think so. The people I know who have quit cold turkey have had the most success. My husband has been quitting for years now. He keeps saying tomorrow, tomorrow. Well, tomorrow never comes, now, does it.

Cold turkey is the way to go.
Yes. But loads of support from friends and family will be a great help.
The only people who I know who have actually quit successfully ALL did it by quitting cold turkey. It was NOT the approach that mattered. It was something that clicked inside their head that said, -You-ve GOT to quit smoking.- Until they arrive at that point, I don-t think anyone is really ready and no smoking cessation aids will have long term success.
I was told by my MD that yes, it-s the best way to quit. When you continue smoking, your body is still getting the stimulation from the nicotine. When you try to -cut down-, you are just spreading the misery out over a longer period of time. I only tell you what my MD told me. I have yet to master the art of quitting smoking. Hope you have better luck than I did!
yeah
Without a -step-down- program to alleviate withdrawls, cessation is 5 times less likely.
Yes, it worked for me.

I realized I did not own the cigarrette, it owned me, as I kept chasing after the next pack.

So I asked God to help me quit, and the first month was the biggest pain........and that was when I was 20, now I-m 56, and I hate being around second hand smoke...even to walk by smokers chokes me. Amazing grace!
It is not the only way to quit.

There are two ways, one way, is you quit cold turnkey, the other is you quit when you die of lung cancer.

Your someone elses call.

Darryl S.
If you have enough will power it is definately possible. I know a few people who have quit smoking that way. Its very hard though... And sometimes it opens you up to finding new addictions (coffee, food).

Another way may be to stop gradually, and use those nicotine patches. a really good book to try is by Allen Carr, everyone who reads that beek seems to quit successfully.

Whichever way you choose to quit will be difficult, so good luck and be strong! YOU CAN DO ITT!!

I want to quit smoking and lose weight what do you think i should do first? -

I want to quit smoking and lose weight what do you think i should do first? -

I-d say quit smoking first.

I-m quitting tomorrow (got my patches ready) and I also want to lose about 2 stone. I figure if I quit smoking it-ll help to make exercising easier as my breathing will be better. Also I find when I-ve tried to quit smoking in the past that I-ve kept myself busy to distract myself from wanting to smoke. I can do more exercising to help keep my mind off smoking.

Good luck and I hope you manage to reach your goals! :)
If you can, try to do both, if your at the gym you wont be aloud to smoke and if you go running or something don-t take anywith you. Try to do about 30 minutes a day exersice and eat more fruit and vegetables. And for smoking, it may be easier to start by just cutting down, I don-t know how many you have a day but say you have 5 try to only have 2 and then a few weeks later only 1 and then try to go without them, hope I helped.
Smoking -- it-s more dangerous and for most people it-s harder to do, and it also tends to cause weight gain so better to get it over with and when you-re comfortable work on your weight. Whatever you do, don-t do both at once, it-s too much to handle -- wait until you feel you can handle things.
Quit smoking first. The reason is you are going to gain after you stop smoking. Chentex worked for me ask your doctor. I have been smoke free for over a year now. If you lose the weight first then quit smoking as you add a few lbs back on it might be to much and draw you back into I need it to lose weight and you may never stop. Good luck and I hope for you the best it is not easy. HUGS
One solution for both probleums Smoking and overweight
Try acomplia 20mg it will help you alot, its safe and gives fast results . i have lose about 20 pounds with it ..here you can get more information about acomplia

Get rid of the cigarettes which are seriously damaging your health more than having some weight you want to lose. Once thats done (i know, its not as easy as it sounds) but then you can go on to feeling healthy and being healthy without coming home for a smoke. (:

If you are on benefits your doctor can give you free smoking patches. Also there is a anti smoking campaign by the NHS look on line go to www.docnet.co.uk and from there will help with you stop smoking and the right way to lose weight and keep the weight from going back on again. Good luck in doing both Jane
stop smoking first better for health and when people stop smoking they generally put on weight so there would be no point loosing weight then stop smoking then having too loose that weight again!
quit smoking first

because then you can be free to lose weight.
lose weight, continue smoking to take a stand against political correctness...join us!
Be careful here - I know a lot of people that have put on weight after stopping smoking.
smoking first as more people die from smoking than being overwight
Both..

Ok, so I am 5 days cigarette free right now, and I have to admit....i am being soooo grouchy! Every little thing is tickin me off, and I soooo badly want to go buy a pack right now. Is anyone else trying to quit smoking? If so, do you have any good tips to help me get over this hurdle? Thanks.
You-re almost over the worst part...don-t give in! Try sucking on an ice cube or a piece of peppermint. Also, try to stay active. Being idle always made me smoke more.
I smoked for about 25 years and I quit smoking about 5 years ago and all I can tell you is to keep thinking of how terrible the smoke smells in your hair and how sick they can make you. also if you don-t quit now it will be much harder down the road. oh and remember you can quit smoking but you can-t quit cancer
I quit smoking(cold turkey) the moment I found out I was pregnant back in Feb of 08. I had the hardest time trying to get the thought of cigarettes out of my head, but it was worth it! You should try to pick up a new habit. I had a friend that started chew gum and another that also started jogging. It worked for both of them, but the craving never really goes away. It-s always a little nagging thought at the back of my mind! Anyway, good luck.
Oh my god. Ive been trying to quit for WEEKS now. I HAVE to quit for medical reasons and STILL I don-t get scared enough to just quit. I went a whole month two months ago without a smoke then gave in like a wuss. Really, they say it takes many many many times of trying to actually quit...typically. I can tell you all the usual tricks, chew gum, get the patch, try the nicotine gum, have a person you call like a smoking anonymous sponsor, tell everyone you know you-re quitting so if any of them catch you you feel dumb...I think theres even a 1800 number to call and freak out on people when your flipping a nutty. Good luck, for sure. Where IS that patch of mine anyways?....
relax take it slow, usually if you-re ever craving, just take a glass of water and you-ll be over it in about 5 minutes.

Trust me, it-s been 2 years, and I have had huge cravings, Just do something else for a while, and they-ll go away.
I am currenlty watching my mom go through the same process as you. She has become ten times more grouchy without her cigarette-s. To help her craving, she chews gun (normal or the nicorette stuff) there is also pacthes available at your local drug store.
I know someone who took up jogging. Another person took up a boxing club. Someone else tried karate.... Try something physical!
GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!
i am currently going cold turkey u just have to replace ciggs with something healthy so theirs no hole in your daily routine

Have you tried it or know anyone who has,I am thinking of giving it a go.

(This product might have been out for up to a year but I am not sure?)
Its called cold turkey.
You are talking about Pfizer-s Chantix (http://www.chantix.com), which has been on the market for several months. It-s not nicotine, but the medication works on the same area of the brain as nicotine and blocks the brain-s cravings. It requires a prescription, though, so you-ll have to discuss it with your doctor.
I hope there is so I can recommend it to my friend.

simply you have to throw everything away in the toilet.
not so simple, cold turkey is hard and you probably should use something like a nicotin patch, though it is true that if you have cigarretes around the house it-s just another temptation to smoke. If you have the need to put something to your mouth - eat pretzels :D

You have to want to give up - it wasn-t easy we were both very heavy smokers - but it was worth it in the long run.
Good luck to you
everyone i know says the patch works best, the patch and working out
The first step is to make sure a person really wants to quit smoking. It is hard to quit something you like and is even harder if that something you like is an addictive substance. Anyways, the person in question must really want to quit or it won-t happen.

The next step is to get educated as to what is available. There are organizations that can help you with this. Get as much info as you can. There is no knowledge that isn-t power. Things to consider is success rate, availability of product, price and side effects if any.

third step is to come up with a battle plan that fit your needs. Some people can do it cold turkey. Most can-t. You may choose to a combination of methods. The idea is to do what you think will work for you. You know yourself better than anybody else. Be realistic.

4th is to understand you triggers and avoid them. If you know you smoke when you see your friends smoke then maybe you should hang out less with those friends or avoid that situation. Another trigger can be routines, or after watching a certain t.v. show. FInd what your triggers are and see how you can change them or at least learn to recognise it.

5th finally understand that you will fail many times. Is ok, you are human. JUst keep at it and over time you will succeed.
try jogging it worked for me or try chewing gum
Throw out all you cigarettes. Best is to flush them down a toilet. Then of course, give your lighter and all your money to your wife/husband and let him/her keep it, and remind him/her that you-re trying to quit smoking so she won-t give you any until you quit.
You have to want to quit and know that it will be the hardest thing you will ever do. join a support group and remind yourself everyday why you want to quit. Educate yourself on the damage of cigarettes and remember that each day that you don-t smoke you are healing and become more healthy. Plus it is great to regain your smell and not have your clothes and hair smell like an ashtray. Good Luck. Exercise is also very helpful.
cold turkey is the only way to quit for good. weining yourself with medication or patches only makes the withdrawal symptoms last longer. those who have quit successfully with the patch end up still addicted to nicotine and often chew nicotine gum, continue using the patch, or substitute with another tobacco product.

cold turkey is the most traumatic to your lifestyle, but your body is clear of nicotine in 3-5 days. thats how i did it, and i am 4 years without nicotine, and have absolutely no desire for anything similar anymore.

Ive decided to quit smoking, need help!? -

last night as i lay in bed gasping for air, i finally decided to quit smoking. i have bronchitis pretty bad right now but dont have insurance to see a doctor. i know that if it gets any worse, which it usually does, i will have to go to the ER. I was wondering if anyone has some good advice to keep myself on track. It has been 7 hours since my last cigarette and with a two years old running amuck it has been hell.
I used this site when I quit and it was a real lifesaver. Take the time to check it out (its free too which is great). Gives you lots of tips, answers to questions and support all day and all night.

Good luck!

Try some cinnamon suckie candies, or any kind of suckie candy, or even sun flower seeds can help keep your mouth busy. Also call 1-800-NO BUTTS and they can hook you for free with the nicotene patch to help you quit smoking. Good luck and congrats on making such a tough decision, Oh ya and there is also a prescription they can give you called welbutrin, but being since you don-t have any medical coverage, I would call the NO BUTTS number so you can get help for free.
I-m on week 7, and no relapse,

I can say that on the fourth day you will start to feel better, that-s the day i got out and ran a mile(that-s really not that far) and i coughed and coughed and got some of that bad stuff out. now i run every other day and feel great, i don-t feel sluggish any more or tired all the time.I know its hard, you always want to set time aside for that little puff puff. well ignore that and try and set something else in its place, like something that takes care of your body, like brushing your hair or applying skin lotion. anything that works, really. Oh and i have a 2 year old too, and i run and roll with him and -fly- around the house all the time, i love to see him laugh and giggle when i am playing with him.Good luck, you have a very special friend there that needs you and wants you and no one else. Take care.
Try running amuck with the two year old. When you exercise with your children you can do things together, it will take your mind off smoking, and it will help open up your lungs. I don-t know how brochitis might affect that, but hey I never said I was a doctor.

Plus you should smoke weed. I agree with my Nappy Princess up there.
if you really want to quit you will be fine ---- just a little uncomfortable for a few days but then it-s all in your head.
this is happining because your craving for fags.Try chewing gum to stop cravings.
I went to my doctor and started taking a new prescription medication that really worked for me. It is called Chantix. I had tried everything. You can look it up at www.chantix.com or call 1-877-CHANTIX. Many people need to take it for three months. The least expensive pharmacy was Costco. Good luck!
you cant take care of your child if you die, go to the er now.
It-s great that you want to quit. I really recommend this site to help you be successful:

Patches, pills and Gum don-t work. The process in this program really does work.

Tom
im quitting right now myself, im on day 13. I used the patch for the first couple days, my partner is using the gum. If you use either, make sure you do steady usage, remember to put the patch on every morning, or remember to chew a new piece of gum every hour -set an alarm, it helps-.

Another thing to remember, cravings will go away wheather you smoke the cigarette or not. Just keep saying you dont need it, and within 2-15 minutes, you wont anymore because the craving will go away. Talking to people and having people support you helps.

Also, if you cheat -try not to of course- Its not the end of the world. Just find out why you did it, avoid the situation, and dont do it again. Dont do what we did and every time we cheated, started smoking again -weve been trying to quit for 6 months now-.

Good luck!
Congratulations! Try nicorette gum of patches
It only takes three days for the nicotine to leave your system. Then it is a mental battle. A tough one at that! The best thing to do is keep busy. Keep some candy and water at hand and every time you feel like your missing something eat some candy or drink some water. It worked for me. After the first three days you should notice that the physical cravings aren-t very strong anymore. Once you are here you have made it through the hardest part so hang in there. The only way to quit smoking is to NEVER take another puff again. Not socially, not when your drinking, never. Once your brain reaches a level of nicotine addiction it will never go away. When you go back to smoking you pick up right where you left off. Sometimes worse. So no cheating. Other than that I would suggest strengthening your will to quit by doing some research.

Read the nicodemon-s lies page. Very helpful! Good luck!
Firstly, congrats. This is a hard thing to do but it will pay off soo much in the long run. Plus... think if the cash you-ll save!

You need to find a substitution. When you crave a smoke, insert substitution here. I think carrots are good... those baby carrots. Have one or two when you want a smoke. Others prefer sun flower seeds... but you-ll find your vice.

When you want a cigarette, wait a few minutes. Try to think of something to do instead of smoking; you might chew gum or drink a glass of water

If you want to ween yourself off, try buying cigarettes that you absolutely cant stand!

Change your morning routine. When you eat breakfast, don-t sit in the same place at the kitchen table. Stay busy.

Good luck!!!
As a healthcare provider I have been prescribing Chantix for my patients. The success rate is over 80%. Look it up on the website. Its a great new med to help beat tobacco dependency. My patients have loved how it worked for them.
I know many people who have found this book helpful. They also have a version specifically aimed at women. Good luck!

Edit: I have to disagree with everyone that says to use a substitute. The problem with smoking isn-t just the nicotine, but even more so the habit itself--the oral fixation, etc.... Even if you replace it with something healthy such as carrot sticks, sunflower seeds, or whatever, it still is going to make it easier to start again in the future; you haven-t gotten out of the habit of putting something to/in your mouth. Also the book I was referring to in the link is called -The EASYWAY to stop smoking- I have known this book to help a lot of people using no gums, patches or other alternatives.
Carrot sticks, straws, tooth picks, talking with people that don-t smoke, and pray a lot. No luck......simply Bless you.

I have heard of patch that would help to quit smoking is it true and will it have any side-effects? -

I have beeing smoking for years and now when i really needs to quit i cannot. i heard about some patch or something like that that will help me to cut it down. if some one has used it or you know that how it works please answer to me. and i would also like to know if it has any side effects.
Yes, there are nicotine patches available to help you quit smoking. They have patches with different levels of nicotine in them for different types of smokers (heavy, medium, or light smoker). You can also use the different patches to help wean yourself from the nicotine.

I have used them personally and find that they do work pretty well. However, as with any other method, you must have the will to really quit smoking. Side effects with the patches can be a problem for some people, especially people who still smoke while wearing the patch. Some people notice mild dizziness a bit after putting on the patch. This sometimes passes. If you continue to be dizzy or nauseous, try a lower dose patch. They can also cause heart palpitations, especially if you smoke while wearing them.

If used properly, the patches are an excellent method of quitting the smokes.
its good that you are quiting...the patches are realli good because they slowly take you off smoking...you can take different ones according to how badly you smoke and how fast you want to quit..
personally i haven-t used them...but my dad and brother has and it has worked fine on them
i dont think that there are any side effects but it wont be serious...if you do come out with anything after you started using them...then go to your doctor....
hope that helps
Side effects
The most common side effect of the nicotine patch is a rash on the skin where the patch
is worn. Moving the patch to a new area of skin each day will help reduce skin irritation,
and there are also medicated skin creams available at pharmacies.
Some people have sleep disturbances or vivid dreams, particularly with the high dose 24
hour patch.5 In these cases, it’s recommended that you either take off the 24 hour patch
just before bedtime, or switch to the 16 hour patch.
Less common side effects include headache, nausea and indigestion.10 If side effects do not
fade within a few days, or are distressing, you should see your pharmacist or doctor.
If you use the patch, you should not smoke as well, because it may increase the risk of side
effects and heart problems.

Using the patch:
The nicotine patch is a medicine and you should use it according to the advice from your
pharmacist or doctor.
You must use the nicotine patch correctly for it to help you quit. Once you’ve bought
the patches, you should set a quit date. You need to stop smoking before you start using
patches.
One patch is used per day. When applying the patch, make sure you press it onto a hairless
area of skin for about 10 seconds, to make sure it sticks properly After it’s on, wash and
dry your hands thoroughly to avoid getting nicotine in your eyes or nose. Do not use soap,
as this may increase absorption of nicotine.
The manufacturer’s information sheet that comes with the patches will tell you how many
weeks to use them, and when to use lower strength patches. The programs vary between 10
and 16 weeks.
However, recent research shows that using patches for eight weeks works as well as
using them for longer.
Highly addicted smokers who still have cravings and withdrawal
symptoms eight weeks after quitting, may benefit from longer use.
There is no evidence
that switching down to smaller patches in later weeks is better than simply stopping use of
the larger patches.

How can you convince someone to quit smoking? -

How can you convince someone to quit smoking? -

The -someone- would be my mom.
That is what we have in common. I find ciggarettes in her purse. (as in my mom) But some times, you got to steal her light and ciggs. Talk to her too, that will help out. Tell her you want your mom to stay alive for a long time and that you love her. When she tries to quit, she may be cranky. But you got to learn, helping can have some concequences too. I want my mom to be above the influence no matter how old she is. But like people have been saying, you cant just make somebody quit smoking, encourage them. Kaiser Permenente has this thing that helps people with a smoking adiction. It might take so many tries for her to become a successful quitter. My teacher-s mother also has some kind of lung problem. That-s what happen when you get an addiction!
u cant. the only way someone will stop smoking is if they want. honestly when someone gets on me about how i should quit it makes me want to smoke more
You can-t...Take it from an ex-smoker who has tried to get her father to quit for 10 years. BUT you can tell her how worried about her health you are and that the thought of losing her scares you to death. That-s what my children did 10 years ago when my husband and I decided to quit together. You can tell her that you know it will be one of the hardest things she has ever done and that you will be supportive even if she is terribly grouchy and irritable, which she will be. You can help by buying some of the Nicoderm CQ patches which is what we used. A lot of people who haven-t ever smoked before don-t understand that you are not only giving up the nicotine but also the hand to mouth habit. Which is why so many people gain weight when they quit smoking. That was the hardest thing for me. What to do with my hands? But if you nag, it will backfire and only make her try to avoid you. My younger sister does that to my dad and he doesn-t want to be around her. The only way that a person can quit an addiction is if they, themselves actually WANT to do it. If she decides she wants to do it because she hates seeing you so worried then she can do it with your help. Try to be understanding...depending on how much and how long she has smoked she could experience night sweats, shaking, nightmares, headaches, and possibly feel tightness in her chest. My husband did but I didn-t. Good Luck!! It-s one of the best things we ever did and I wish I could convince my dad to quit also.
i-m a smoker and i have been for 4 years now. it is extremely hard to quit smoking. i-m sorry to tell you this but you cant make some quit smoking. it is something they have to do on their on. be supportive, find materials and booklets on smoking. tell them you will help buy products to help with quit, but make sure you buy them and not just give her money. if she really wants to stop she will, but it is a very very hard thing to do and it takes a lot of strength to quit.

good-luck!
I don-t think you can. They have to want to do it themselves. It is an addiction. My husband has tried to quit many times. I keep hoping one of these times he will be successful. You can only encourage your mom to quit, for her sake and yours. The rest is really up to her.
depends on the person. If they are really addicted then proubally not nut if dey jus started den yea if you really talk to em
Sorry, You can-t convince someone into quitting smoking. Most likely anyway
Most people I know that smoke (me included), have to want to quit. If they don-t want to quit. Most likely they wont. I stopped smoking, only I decided that it was time to stop. I say stop because I stopped smoking for five years, only to start smoking again. So, you see most people have to have the desire to quit. Ask anybody, and they will tell you the same thing I think.

Has anyone had acupuncture to help you quit smoking? -

Does it really work?
To quit smoking, you need to make two considerations. First, you have to deal with the cravings, which are from the physical addiction to the chemicals in cigarettes. Second, you have to address the habit or the behavior of smoking. The cravings can easily be addressed with acupuncture, it does work for this. On the other hand, the behaviors - things like smoking after a meal, lighting up when you are stressed, etc - are a completely different issue. You will have to make the effort to form new habits to replace smoking. It is like that old saying, -you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.- The role of the acupuncturist is to make YOUR job of quitting easier. If you are determined, the acupuncture therapy can make the process of quitting go more smoothly for you. Also, acupuncture therapy can help your lungs and body begin to detoxify, reduce stress and improve your general health. Good luck to you.
I HAD IT DONE,STILL SMOKIN.
NOTHING IS GOING TO WORK
IF YOU DON-T WANT TO STOP.
Yes, acupuncture does really help you to quit smoking. Not only that, it also improves your health in many other ways including relieving your stress.
Smoking cessation is something that you have to make up your mind to do...I have had acupunture and did not stop however I tried hypnosis and did not smoke for almost 11 years..

Did it work?
Did you experience any of the side effects -In clinical trials, the most common adverse effects of Chantix were nausea, headache, vomiting, flatulence (gas), insomnia, abnormal dreams, and dysgeusia (change in taste perception), according to the FDA.-
How long did side effects last?
Would you recommend the use of Chantix to other smokers?
Yes, it worked. Yes, there are side effects, nausea and vivid dreams being the most common ones. I did have a couple more, but I quit, and it-s been 7 weeks that I am smokefree and 5 weeks since I stopped taking Chantix.

I blogged about my whole experience here:

Yes. I used it to quit after 35 yars of smoking and it worked. Nothing else really matters now does it?

I started a yahoo group when I quit (over 7 months ago) with extensive files, links, news etc. attached that can answer ANY question you might have about smoking and quitting. Feel free to have a look and...Hang in there.......R

I had zero side effects and stopped smoking after the 5th dose, although I continued to take it for 30 days just to be on the safe side and get the nicotine out of my body. It really is a miracle drug!
Chantix is an excellent way to quit smoking with few side effects. For more Chantix information, please click the following link:
http://www.121doc.com/champix.html?a_aid…

I am currently using Chantix, and have been quit for 8 weeks today! I had severe exhaustion, which was alleviated when I cut the dose back. I got nauseous if I took my morning pill without food. I get headaches if I don-t drink enough water. I was very gassy, but that has gotten better. The dreams have been fabulous, thanks for asking! Overall, the side effects have been mild, especially because this drug REALLY WORKS and I have been able to quit smoking while not trying to strangle anyone. I absopossilutely would, and have, recommend this drug to smokers.
I stopped smoking without using anything, it was tough to quit, with 3 other people smoking in my home while I was quiting. It-s been over 2 yrs now since I quit and I haven-t smoked a time since I quit!
I have been on this medication for 25 days now. I haven-t smoked yet. It isn-t as easy as they make it out to be; in fact I still want to smoke at times.

The side effects are strong, but I guess after smoking for 20 years they should be. The sleeping dreams and not sleeping are the worst. I eat all of the time.

After the two weeks - I started to want to move around like I use to. Before, that I was out of it and wondered if this was worth it.

The drug has a daily check in service. However, it doesn-t allow for questions and the answers are specific to your case. They keep sending you to the doctor for advice.. Who can afford that?

A word of caution.. When I cut my dose in half I feel better and don-t want to smoke. However, the makers of Chantix want you to keep taking the pills and paying out the money.

I am not sure that if I quite taking the pills I would feel better anyway.

Good luck
I used it and it worked beautifully!
I had no side effects and stopped smoking by about week 3. I have been smoke free since...about 8 months now...and would definately recommend it to others.

Good luck!
I experienced no side-effects. I quit with that med., and patches. I won-t say it was a breeze, but it wasn-t that bad either.

Peace

I could die at any moment. I have -live for today- tattooed backwards on my chest so I can read it every morning in the mirror. I live in the moment. Should it really matter how bad they are when life in itself is so fragile?
You seem to appreciate every minute of life you get. While I appreciate your realization of the fragility of life, consider that you just might live a long time. Do you really want to spend the last years of your life dying in a hospital bed? Life is made up of a string of -todays- with consequences for your actions. So live for today, but consider that you may have thousands of more days to live, hopefully in the best quality possible.
hi.
i totally agree with live for the day but think about it logically. if you continue smoking you wont have that chance to live for another day.
there will be a time which you wont manage to live for the day because there wont be any other day... you will die.
i am telling you this because my grandfather got cancer from smoking and i lost him. he believed that you have to live for the day but the day came when he regretted that.
if you want you can visit this site and see what smoking does to you.
p.s only see it if you have a strong stomach.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXAlpHSI-…

If you really want to -live for today- doesn-t that mean you want to live to the fullest?
Cigarettes have over 4,000 poisons. They make you feel like ****, but you don-t realize it because you got used to it.
Google -quit smoking- and you-ll find endless support.
I smoked for 10 years and stopped 3 years ago before I started trying for my daughter. I smoked 30 a day and it nearly put me to the wall trying to stop but so worth it. I send you all the best in trying to stop. Life is fragile but you don-t need to make it anymore fragile by smoking.
i quit smoking to set a good example for the smokers. I can quit, why cant u?

When i used to smoke, many non-smokers advised me to quit it. But it was not effective.

One of my friend, showed his medical reports and his health was gone bad after smoking for about 18 years. He didn-t have choice except to quit it.

I hate smoking. Last month he passed away due to lung cancer. He was good man.
So you live in the moment....ok, fine but don-t you want your moments to be the best they can be. Life can be long - not so fragile. It can be long, healthy - a blessing if you do the best you can.
I wish you well.
Yes you should. Live for today, dont die tomorrow because of smoking. Live in the moment, spend time with family/friends/whatever, cause you are right we could die at any moment. But dont let a ****** cigarette kill you bro.
Quitting smoking will improve the quality of your health in the short term, as well as the long term. You-ll likely look, feel, and smell better once you-ve quit.
Hey there, i can only speak from experience here, but i haven`t had one for about six weeks now and after having smoked for 15 years, I`ve never felt so good, hope it helps
Can-t answer it any better than Baby Boo.

I quit smoking 6 months ago but never developed a cough? -

Should i be concerned that I am not clearing the mucus from my lungs because most people who quit say they cough up a lot of stuff... or should I be happy I don-t have a cough and just forget about it?
Lucky You; and CONGRATULATIONS
no feel lucky =]
if you smoked menthols then the gunk doesnt come out. if you smoked normals then you might still develop a cough. if you dont then theres not much you can do about it!
Congratulations on quiting smoking. I don-t think mucus from your lungs will be a problem, I have asbestos in mine but there is nothing I can do until it develops into something bad. Here is an idea you may want to pursue. NASA completed a Clean Air Plant Study a few years ago and found :

-Common indoor plants may provide a valuable weapon in the fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution. Those plants in your office or home are not only decorative, but NASA scientists are finding them to be surprisingly useful in absorbing potentially harmful gases and cleaning the air inside modern buildings.-

-NASA research has consistently shown that living, green and flowering plants can remove several toxic chemicals from the air in building interiors. You can use plants in your home or office to improve the quality of the air to make it a more pleasant place to live and work - where people feel better, perform better, any enjoy life more.-
Be happy you don-t have it. If any new symptoms develop be concerned. Congratulations on quitting!

Help, ex-smokers! How did you quit smoking? -

Help, ex-smokers! How did you quit smoking? -

I am going on nine years of smoking a full pack a day. Before that it was off and on. Anyway, I know people quit after smoking for 20, plus years. How do you people do it? I-ve tried, but never been able to do it. Does any ex-smokers have any pointers?
I quit a 25 year, 2 pack a day habit COLD TURKEY 23 years ago. In my case, I pretended that they quit making my brand.
My dad had smoked for over 30 years and got a prescribed medication to help him. He had a hard time for a few weeks but got past that and now has no cravings and cant stand the smell. They gave him Wellbutrin to help him stop, but there are others as well.
I smoked three packs a day for over 20 years. Woke up one morning and almost coughed my lungs out and realized enough is enough. I threw away the pack I was smoking and have never looked back and it has been almost 20 years. One really has to want to quit the ugly habit before he/she will really quit. I am so happy that I quit when I did because I probably would be dead if I didn-t. Good luck......
I have smoked for the last 11 years, about a pack and a half a day. Last Monday, my husband and I bought a package of stage 2 nicotine patches and we each used 3 patches over the course of 3 days. That was to get over the initial time without cigarettes. We also radically changed our routine and have avoided smokers like the plague. Seriously, I don-t even breathe if I have to walk past someone who is smoking, because I don-t even want to be tempted by the smell of it. Cold turkey quitting does tend to be the best way to quit, but the only real way to quit, no matter how you decide to do it, is with absolute determintation that you will never smoke a cigarette ever again. Not just on the weekends, or just this once, or only when I-m drinking, but NEVER again. Once you have decided that you will NEVER be a smoker again, the rest will be easy.
I smoked for 35 years and stopped smoking 3 years ago. I developed a very bad respiratory flu and physically could not smoke because all I did was cough and cough and since we always smoked outside (it was winter at the time) it made my cough worse. It started off not smoking for 1/2 day, then increased it to 1 day and said to myself -if I went one day without maybe I can go 2-, etc. But be prepared for the cravings because they never leave you - they do become less and less as time goes. Good luck and try whatever you think will work for you.
You have to commit to quitting. Don-t say you are trying to quit.
Just say that you have quit. If you go for a few days without smoking, then you have managed to get rid of the body-s physiological dependency and all that is left is the psychological dependency. Some people find that they need to replace the activity of smoking with something else. Chewing gum helps some people. The patch and the gum can help lower the physiological dependency over time but most people tend to have a pretty strong will power for a short period of time. It may be easier to do just do it cold turkey over a short period with more will power.
If there are people in the family that smoke, it is best to all quit together and use each other as a support group.
One couple did that, and when at home, shared a kiss when they felt like smoking. Made for a happier marriage while they were quiting smoking.
My friend just quit in July after about 17 years of smoking a pack a day. She started freaking herself out over cancer and emphysema. Those graphic anti-smoking commercials started to get to her. She then read The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr (it-s about how we are brainwashing ourselves into thinking we can-t quit). She stopped buying cigarettes and used the patch everyday. She bought tea tree oil flavored toothpicks and started chewing on those all day. She was a mess for about a week but slowly got better after that. She actually quit using the patch once the box was empty and she tried the gum but she thought it was gross. She hasn-t smoked since and it-s been about 5 months.

I tried the exact same thing as her and I-ve been smoking about a pack a day (sometimes more) for about 10 years. I had a mental breakdown after about a week then I ran out of patches. I freaked out about gaining weight so I ran out and bought cigarettes instead of patches. I-m still smoking. Honestly, the patch was working but I made the decision to buy cigarettes instead. I really didn-t try hard enough because I was afraid of the weight gain.

The anti-depressant Wellbutrin is supposed to help people stop smoking but I can-t take it since I-m on other medication.

How can i quit smoking and doing drugs? -

Its mind over matter. If you want to quit, you can be strong, and if you want to be going down the wrong track, then you can be weak. There is no magic cure, so just put your mind to it.

The first step with any addiction is recognizing that you have a problem, and you-ve managed that.
It-s really hard. Smoking is not an easy thing to stop doing. My close friend-s dad stopped smoking several years ago, and still has to chew (normal) gum. He went from patch =- nicotine gum =- normal gum. Patches and nicotine gum are very expensive in the long run, but probably about the same you currently spend on cigs. It is possible to stop without these, but you-ll need a very, very strong will (and it-s almost impossible to stop without any aides, as I-m sure you already know). You should be prepared for withdrawal. My suggestion is to choose whether you want to quit both smoking and doing drugs (you should have specified which ones) at the same time, or one at a time. I recommend you stop drugs first if you choose one at a time. The withdrawal process will be painful both physically and mentally. It-ll take many days to even slightly feel better. Kicking drugs is faster than kicking smoking, but is far more intense. Quitting smoking is a much longer process it won-t be as drastic, but you-ll likely be very grumpy and snap at pretty much everything every time you take a new step (switching to gum, etc.)

If you-re really serious, and not just a kid who-s formed a habit and can-t get professional help/doesn-t have the money to, I really do suggest you check into rehab for your drug addiction, and perhaps find local support groups (such as NA, AA, or any groups who are dedicated and serious) for quitting smoking. Quitting in a group provides a lot more motivation to many people than doing it alone. You can also devise a method of operant conditioning to help you. But that-s probably as far into psychology as you should delve...do not try a hypnotist.

You-ll also need a strong reason to quit. A person, an event, a thing, a goal. A reward, even. Something strong enough that you can think of it when your withdrawal is at it-s worst and it will give you the strength to keep at it and not give in.

Don-t be afraid to rely on others for strength/ask for help. If you truly want to quit, and it-s not just you saying, hey, I think I-ll quit b/c I feel like it, then you won-t care what it takes to stop. It-s not a decision you can make lightly, you have to be fully devoted to it.
Well, I quit gambling which is just another addiction to add to the list. It took me a nasty (and I mean NASTY divorce), a week in the hospital, and 16 months in counseling before I could stop. Also, I think AA and NA are awesome programs. Some people will tell you you just have to have the will but anyone who is an addict knows that it-s more than -will-. Get some help. There-s no shame in getting help.
Good Luck.

Every time I try to quit smoking I feel like I cant breathe? -

I begin to feel anxious, moody, nervous, and a extreme feeling that I am suffocating. Even if I don-t smoke for a few hours I begin to feel like I can-t breathe, I have been heavily smoking for 4 years now at about a pack a day. Quitting in the past has been easier without these feelings that I can-t breathe, now it almost seems impossible.
Might check out if you have some underlying asthma. Smoking temporarily anesthetizes and paralyses the cilia and alveoli in your lungs. That way, they tolerate the crud that-s building up in them, and you also can ignore underlying problems like mild asthma. So when you stop smoking, you feel the cumulative effect of the smoking, and uncover any underlying problems. If you do have asthma, or just inflammation as part of your cig. withdrawal, an inhaler might help get you over the hump.
may be psychological... try this...
take a deep breath out (you don-t have to breathe in to do this)
take a slow breath in thru the nose
take a long breath out thru the mouth, then repeat by slowing your breath each time;; only do about 4-5 of these repetitions @ a time;; it will open up your airways - also relax you in case it-s just -nerves-;; make sure your breath OUT is a healthy one (not shallow)
well having a habit of something is HORRIBLE .

but it takes time and you can stop anything you put your mind to .
you feel that way because thats what your sending your brain to feel .
try not to think about it .

those things are seriously CANCER sticks .
see your doctor for Chantix -it will help the withdrawal symptoms. get checked for lung cancer, too.

Quit Smoking.? -

My boyfriend and i live together. We have decided to try to quit smoking. So far i am doing pretty good, i went cold turkey and it has been five days. He, on the other hand, lasted only one day. Although he has cut back dramatically (between 1 and 3 smokes a day), it is making it harder for me to quit, knowing that he is still smoking. Any suggestions on how i can help him try a little harder?
You can-t make him quit if he doesn-t want to.

You have to focus on yourself now, and accept that eventhough the two of you made the decision to stop together, you can only be responsible for yourself. Why did you stop smoking? Have you only stopped because he has stopped or have you stopped because you want to stop?

I have stopped twice before with my husband, and we have both started again those times. But my heart wasn-t in it. 4 months ago I decided to stop, because I really wanted to stop. And I stopped eventhough he continued to smoke. I thought the fact that he continued to smoke would be bother me, and I would be jealous . But I am just so happy that I don-t smoke.

I wish I could make my husband stop too, but I think nothing I say to him will make him stop - like nothing you say or do to your boyfriend will make him stop. My advice is that you take pride in the fact that you have stoppped and be happy about it. Maybe when he sees how happy you are about not smoking, he will want to stop too. Be happy about all the positive changes that you feel and tell him about it - lung capacity (suddenly walking up stairs is a lot easier), blood flow, your skin will look so much better soon. And the joy of not being a slave to nicotine anymore - I can-t tell you how liberating it is not to think about cigarettes all the time.

And off course, ask him kindly if he can please smoke away from you and outside (which I hope he is allready -second hand smoke is just as bad as smoke).

I read Allen Carr-s -easy way to stop smoking- before I stopped, and found that so much of what he wrote made perfect sence to me. Maybe your husband will like it too - the only problem is you are supposed to smoke while you read it....
But my husband also read it, and he didn-t stop...

Good luck - be happy and proud that you have stopped, and remember never to have another cigaret (it will only lead to more).
If he is really having trouble get CHANTIX. I just quit 2 weeks ago and my brother still (and did when I first quit) smokes around me and it doesn-t affect me at all. Its a pill and it really works. Trust me, just go to the doctors and get the presciption.

It is about $100 (at least it was for me) and health insurance does not cover any of it. How can you put a price on your health not to mention how much cigs cost.
Smoking is a very personal addiction though it affects those around the smoker. Don-t insult him. Don-t call him a failure or anything similar. Be his cheerleader and encourager. Don-t make it a competition between you and him. Don-t give up and keep encouraging him. Tell him that he can do it.

Most important. You have to realize that it is his decision. You can support him or tear him down. Either way it is his decision. Don-t make him walk alone.
Some people have a harder time stopping because they relate it to some of their day to day activities and cannot seem to break free.

Just keep trying and encourage him don-t nag because this will only make him want to smoke more.

Good luck
AW! your chain smoker yah its hard to quit that fast but try to busy your self and your BF in any activities or sports. .gud luck for ur quiting smoking you can do it!!
Happened to my boy and me - what I did was tell him that I was serious about quitting and that him doing it was making it too hard. I told him I needed to chose my health over our vice, and that I needed to leave him to keep my health.

That put him in the horrible place of choosing between the vice and me... he chose me.
Get him to visit this site (it will help you too). I used it when I quit and it did wonders for me, and others that I know.

Quit smoking for a week and a half for life insurance? -

do u think it will show up on the urinal test or the blood test? im taking it this coming up saturday(which will be a week and a half by then) and... i dunno if im gonna pass or not.. i have not picked up a cigarette since last thursday, but i have been around people that smokes.... thanks in advance
Even if you do pass your tests don-t you think your insurance company will find out once you are dead. What if you die from a smoking related illness?

These companies check up on all these kinds of things because they are there to primarily make money They won-t pay out if they don-t have to and pleading from your family members won-t change their minds. (I suggest you watch the documentary -Sicko- by Micheal Moore for proof of that).

Isn-t it better to just quit, full stop. You are going to spend the rest of your life paying the insurance company money. None of which your family will ever see back.

Visit our site to join our inspirational 12 day e-course. You can also download our free book -36 Powerful Superfoods- to help fight weight gain and start mending damage caused by smoking. For more information and to post your opinion about the products you have tried, visit the following website.

Good Luck
The last thing you want to do is lie on your application. And they may take a hair sample and test it for drugs and the likes, and the nicotine will show up. They don-t always do blood tests. Now if you haven-t smoked in 6 months, that would get you passed with flying colors. I don-t know how old you are or how long you-ve been smoking, but telling them you used to smoke and quit over 6 months ago, you won;-t have a problem. Can-t you wait that long or can-t you give up smoking that long? You will still get the insurance now, but it will cost you more if you are a smoker. Good luck to you and I hope you make the right choice.

Besides health, can someone give me some good reasons to quit smoking? -

Besides health, can someone give me some good reasons to quit smoking? -

Many good reasons to quit smoking:

1)Smoking can shorten your life by 10 years or more; and that the addiction can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. Each time a smoker lights up, that single cigarette takes about 5 to 20 minutes off the person-s life.
2) Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive
3) Many of the chemicals in cigarettes, like nicotine and cyanide and carbon monoxide are poisons that can kill in high enough doses.
4) Increased risk of illness. Smokers have an increased risk of upper respiratory infections like, flu, colds, asthma, bronchitis and pneumonia which can be deadly. than non-smokers.
5) Over the long term, smoking leads people to develop health problems like high blood pressure; heart disease, heart attacks; stroke, emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue),chronic lung diseases and many types of cancer — including lung, throat, stomach, and bladder cancer.
6) Smokers not only develop wrinkles and yellow teeth, they also lose bone density and increase the risk for osteoporosis), a condition that causes older people to become bent over and their bones to break easily.
7) Smokers also tend to be less active than nonsmokers because smoking affects lung power.
8) Smoking can also cause fertility problems and can impact sexual health in both men and women.
9) Smoking among teens can cause bad skin. In one Italian study, linked smoking to an increased risk of getting a type of skin rash- Psoriasis.
10) Bad breath. Cigarettes leave smokers with a condition called halitosis, or persistent bad breath
11) Bad-smelling clothes and hair. The smell of stale smoke tends to linger — not just on people-s clothing, but on their hair, furniture, and cars. And it-s often hard to get the smell of smoke out
12) Reduced athletic performance. People who smoke usually can-t compete with nonsmoking peers because the physical effects of smoking (like rapid heartbeat, decreased circulation, and shortness of breath) impair sports performance
13) Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Smoking affects the body-s ability to produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and ligaments, will heal more slowly in smokers than nonsmokers
14) Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weight often light up; instead of eating, their bodies lack the nutrients necessary for growth and development and fight off illness properly
15) Smoking can stunt your growth.
16) Pregnant mothers who smoke can have premature babies. Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to deliver babies whose weights are too low for the babies- good health.
17) Smoking harms not just the smoker, but also family members, coworkers, and others who breathe the smoker-s cigarette smoke, called secondhand smoke or passive smoke
18) Quitting smoking you can taste and smell the food better.Your breath smells better. Your cough goes away
19) Ex-smokers have better health than current smokers. For example, ex-smokers have fewer days of illness, fewer health complaints, and less bronchitis and pneumonia than current smokers.
18) Secondhand smoke from a parent-s cigarette increases a child-s chances for middle ear problems, causes coughing and wheezing, worsens asthma, and increases an infant-s risk of dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
19) The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that there is a direct link between smoking and eye problems and eye diseases.like cataracts and .Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
20) Personal relationships and smoking.A non smoker usually has a hard time dealing with the smell of smoke on clothing and in hair. They may also complain that kissing a smoker is like kissing an ashtray.
21) A non smoker may also make many attempts at getting a smoker to quit, which can result in resentment
22 ) All forms of tobacco, including cigars, smokeless tobacco and hookah water pipes, pose dental health concerns such as bad breath, gum disease which can lead to tooth loss; tooth decay; and slow down healing after oral surgery e.g. tooth extraction. Smoking can damage gum tissue and cause receding gums, leaving the roots of the teeth exposed. This could increase the risk of tooth decay and cause hot/cold sensitivity. Smoking causes stains on teeth that can-t be removed with regular brushing..It can cause a build up of tartar, which could require you to get more frequent dental cleanings
Thanks! What-s a TC?

1. Smoking stinks up your clothes, your house, and your hair.
2. Smoking leads to wrinkles around the mouth faster and more visible than in non-smokers
3. Your mouth smells and tastes like an ashtray to your non-smoking hunny when he/she kisses you.
Because after smoking you stink.I dont like taste in the mouth after.
I only do like 1-3 cigarillos in month :d and that enough.
think of all the money you-ll save in a year- put it in a jar and pay for a nice o-seas trip for your vacation !
Social acceptability? It-s getting harder to find places to smoke, and people are less tolerant of the smell.

Great ways to quit smoking? -

I want to stop smoking!!! But the more I want to stop the more I smoke! Its like a vicious circle! I don-t smoke loads a day, usually 10. But I-ve tried to quit and the last time I couldn-t sleep properly and I felt really anxious all the time! This lasted two weeks then I started smoking again cos I was fed up of feelng terrible!
So how did YOU quit or someone you know?
Any uncommon methods?
Thanks in advance.
I stopped smoking 5 weeks ago.
I-m using the nicotine patch, which your suppose to keep on for 24hrs.
I take it off 2 hrs before bed because it does effect sleep.

The first 2 weeks are the hardest then it becomes alot easier. I stopped drinking alcohol 5 weeks ago too. Its really hard to give up ciggarettes if your like drinking. I also keep active and have a clean healthy diet.

I feel so much better then i did 5 weeks ago.

Good luck, theres a book i read too which i thought was pretty useful.

-How to quit without feeling s**t-
Its a good decision that you have taken to quit smoking. The real point is that people smoke for many reasons and many times the reason is that they want to do something and they lit a cigarette. To help that you can try for some substitute when ever you feel like smoking. My friend has the same problem and he took the help of nicotine gum, whenever he felt like smoking he used one. The best point is that he received a free sample of 100 gum to try for free, they helped him and he then continued with them till he quit. I am sure it can help you too, you can also ask for free sample, he got it from the resource included below.. All the Best!!!
You can try
Stop by a senior citizens home or better yet, stop by the cardiac unit or cancer ward in a hospital every day for at least a week.
Find somebody to visit who is sick from smoking. Then force yourself to go outside and smoke and re enter to talk to them. You will feel so gross and smelly and realize that you are not doing the right thing to your body or to the air polluting yourself with smokes.

When you smoke visualize that it is liquid poop you are inhaling. Yep, lift up the back of your throat, down it goes, filling up the lungs, the heart, sticking in the crevisis and hardening.
That-s what smoke is.
Hey Leanne,

I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article:
http://www.squidoo.com/Not_Smoking_Any_M…

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!
J.
Smoking 10 cigarettes means you are a chain smoker. Its very difficult for the chain smokers to quit smoking easily. Its not that easy for you. All you can do is smoke just 1 or 2 cigerattes in day. Which is also dangerous for your health. Put up those patch, it will help.
All the best !!!!!!!!!!!!
my aunt stopped smoking about 2 years ago, she used a treatment called Champix, it worked wonders because shes not smoking anymore. My mom started the treatment too a week ago and she is starting to dislike the taste of the cigarette, so it works!
I heard that hypnosis tapes help really well. I have never tried it myself but I heard it has worked!
Im not a smoker but I hear doctors can help and why did you smoke in the first place? I know its the friends

I quit smoking cigarettes for a month? -

When I quit cold turkey my lungs started to hurt then it stopped. But now my lungs will start hurting for 5 minutes randomly maybe every 5-7 days.

Is this normal?
I experienced the same random pains when i quit. I never found out exactly what it was but after the first 2-3 months it went away and never came back. Good luck kicking the habit.
I think so? My lungs were a mess for a couple months after I quit smoking. They are healing themselves still and trying to get rid of all the nasty junk thats still in them. So I think having some problems is pretty normal?

If it is hard to breathe, really painful when this happens or you cough up blood or other strange stuff, or this doesn-t go away in the next few weeks then you should probably see the doctor. Otherwise I-d say its probably nothing to worry about.
your answer is in the site i mentioned in the sources
I don-t know, I never smoked

I quit smoking a week ago and now i am breaking out! Is it because of the Nicotine coming out of my body?? -

I get pimples a few times a month but these are different. My face is swollen and the huge pimples are very sensitive.
its bcause ur body is getting use to not having any of the chemicals in your body it will clear up soon if u feel uncomfortable use some acne product. Good Luck - Best Wishes!!!!!
probly cause you probly smoked when you got stressed and not smokin is stressin you and so you cant have a cig soo you breakin out i know how it is i did the same... but i started again soo go get a nic patch dont start again
that can be a side effect for the fist few weeks, your body is probably freaking out now because it-s daily intake of chemicals is much different.

see your doctor to get a cream to help your skin while your body adjusts, drink plenty of water and use a gentle soap to wash your face no more than 3 times daily. try not to wear a lot of makeup.
No it just your nerves, stress, is your problem. It makes you body go overboard. Find something to relax with. Hang out with friends who like you, for who you are, not what you look like. Have a great life, and I am glad you kicked, a bad habit!
I don-t think so. From what I-ve heard it takes 3 days for your body to get rid of the nicotine in it. It could be the result of added stress on your body/mind from not smoking, or it could be unrelated by the sounds of a swollen face. I hate this answer but if it doesn-t clear up you could go see the doctor to see if it-s just coincidence and is something else. But you already knew that.
No the toxins are just coming out of your body drink alot of water.
its stress mostly

any one tried chantix to quit smoking? does it really have a support group? any tips on quitting? I need advice especially from folks who are very addicted and have successfully quit.
chantix worked well for almost all my friends andand the only side effect they suffer is depression and there is reports now says that it increases the succidal tendency among users and support gb could guard against that by the way almost of lung damage is revesible
It is the best stuff ever. I am currently on week 6 and tomorrow will be a month without a cigarette. I didn-t completely quit after the first week like they say to try to but I went down to 2-3 a day. After the second week I quit completely and it really hasn-t been very hard. I cut the dosage in half about a week ago and quit taking it 2 days ago and won-t ever smoke again. I didn-t experience any depression. Does make your stomach hurt a little after you take it but just drink alot of water and it goes away. Will also give you really vivid dreams. I only had 1 bad dream but I guess it really messes with some people. I don-t know what you call very addicted but I smoked over a pack a day for 14 years and have tried the gum countless times and had never even quit for a whole day before. I really haven-t even changed my lifestyle at all, I still drink coffee every morning and go drink at bars and it hasn-t been an issue.
I don-t smoke, but I know someone who suffers with COPD and has to use oxygen at night. She said that she tried patches and gum, that nothing worked, so her doctor prescribed her Chantix and it worked. She is smoke free for several years, but the damage to her lungs is irreversible.
