Do you have any quit smoking tips? -

I am quitting smoking very soon, and I-m looking for any good tips or tricks that can help you quit or anything that helps you deal with cravings. Anything really! :)
Thanks for any responses!
If you have been a long term smoker who has smoked a pack or more a day, I really recommend the Patch (use the clear one... less irritating).

Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and when a craving hits, start sipping on it. You can also chew on sugarless gum for a few moments... if at home, brush your teeth during a craving, start some housework, doodle on a pad of paper. You only have to get through 2 minutes... that is the longest a craving will be. Cravings lessen over time and get better with each day.

Keep your hands busy... start up something new... yoga, drawing, painting... anything. A Rubics Cube puzzles, crosswords will also keep you busy... physically and mentally.

You need to stay away from triggers for a month at least... if not 2 or 3 would be better. Alcohol, caffeine, bars, etc. As well you need to start new morning, after meal, stress, etc routine. Wash your face first thing in the morning, brush your teeth after a meal, go for a walk if something upsets you.

Everyone I have recommended it to has really liked it and found it helped them. (Its free). All the people on that site are quitting or have been quit for a long time. They are a supportive bunch and can get you through rough patches, give great tips and help you stay in the game. So do take the time to check it out.
As I am sure you know, there is a plethora of methods out there to help people stop smoking. The best way to achieve this is not to use nicotine suppliments. It may help with cravings depending on how many pack per day you smoke, but it is still putting the drug into your body.

Discuss with your doctor the possiblility of starting Chantix. It is the newest drug on the market for smoking cessation and studies have shown that it has a much higher success rate than other products.

Two other things to consider are support groups (check out the Get Quit program from the makers of Chantix) and changing your behavior. My this, I mean if it is a situation that you would normally have a cigarette, try not to put yourself in that position. (Smoke after a meal, take a walk, chew gum, start a hobby-anything but the cigarette) Sometimes it means that you change your friends that you would normally associate with.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

Quitting smoking does not require any patches, gums, hypnosis or anything like that. These methods are expensive, time consuming and simply do not work. All that is required is a bit of motivation, self belief and determination.

It is key to stay positive, don-t focus on the cravings. Keep the reasons why you quit in the first place circling through your head. This will keep your spirit and motivation high. Cravings will ease as a result.

Good Luck and Good Quitting

I quit once after 7 years, stayed off until some really rough times 5 years later but quit again after half a year. Both times nicorette was my lifesaver although you can end up addicted to the gum, but that-s better then smoking if you research the known health hazards of nicotine gum it-s minimal. Can ween off using regular gum. Definitely a hard habit to quit, you have to really dedicate yourself to it for the long run. Good luck.

p.s. I used the walmart brand, cheapest and I didn-t mind the taste at all.
Stay busy. Begin or increase exercise routines. Put money equal to what you spent on smokes into a savings account or just stashed in a drawer for awhile as a reminder of the money you are saving and as a positive reinforcement of your decisions and convictions. As silly as it may seem, do good and or nice things for others. When I was given this advice I doubted how it would have an impact on me but I tryed it and it did help. It made me feel like a good person and built my self esteem which contributed to my will power to want to be a healthy person and a worthwhile person who takes care of themselves. Good luck to you.
Last carton of Winston cost me $ 1.60 per carton. That-s right: one dollar and sixty cents. So it-s been a long time ago. When I quit, I was smoking 3 packs/day. Of course, when I started smoking, I never thought that I would end up smoking that much.

Here is how I quit: A friend told me to run a mile, and then breathe through a straw for about 5 minutes. Of course, when I tried that, it was impossible! When I told him about how hard it was to get my breath through that straw, he laughed at me and said -keep on smoking!. . . . that-s how hard it-s going to be in the next 25 years if you continue to smoke!

My father-in-law smoked for 55 years. He smoked unfiltered Camels. He quit 10 years before dying. Those last10 years were absolutely awful for him. He would STRUGGLE for breath just sitting in a recliner, watching his TV. Sometimes he would cough so hard that he would spit up pieces of his lungs. That is what smoking did to him!

I can-t believe that this coming January 10th I will have been quit for 37 years. Thank the Lord!

Good luck to you!
A friend of my started little by little. When you smoke, take a few puffs and put out the cigarette and save it for later. When the urge is there, use the same cigarette, take a few puffs and put it out and save it. He was smoking two packs a week. It went down to one a week, then half a pack until he didn-t need it anymore.
First of all thats good u want to quite smoking i use 2 smoke and gave up about 8 months ago. well all u do is go onto www.google.com then write in lung cancer and watch the movies in you tube about people dying of lung cancer. like i know its not easy to quite but if u keep smoking you could get cancer so i would just think would u wanna be lying in a hospital bed dying of cancer!! i would say quite while u can ay.
save all the money you-d otherwise spend on cigarettes and put it towards a vacation... whenever you feel like a cigarette, just think about how great that vacation will be. depending on how much you spent daily, you could be looking at a nice getaway!
the doc has a new medicine that will help block the nicotine receptors in your head. It worked great for me. I was smoking 2 packs a day. It took me a few months but it has worked.
try using the patches because they really work. If you say that the patches are to expensive, think about how much you spend on cigarettes.
try to:
-discontinue looking at cigarettes
-chew gum
-if you ever need one just do something else like running
1. think about the effects of smoking and stop

Stop smoking, and start walking
nicotine gum or try one of those stop smoking things
go to Smoke Enders
