Is it possible to quit smoking and NOT gain weight? -

I have quit several times but always gain alot of weight so I start back up again. By the time I lose the weight and try to quit again, i start gaining the weight back. HELP!!
Your body-s metabolism slows a bit when you quit smoking, as nicotine raises the metabolism - only slightly. So get going with some exercise - even a walk a day, or some sport, dancing etc.

Also some people replace smoking with food, so arm yourself with healthy stuff and stick to it!

There-s all the advice you need here:

http://www.quitguide.com/smoking-and-wei…

Possible, but not probable.
most people smoke because there bored. most people over eat because there bored.

smokeing is not a diet plan infact its the farthest thing away from healthy liveing as you can possiby get which im sure you have relized time and time again.

try takeing up an activity that will destract you from both over eating and smokeing. you may have also found that when you were a smoker you were forced to go out side more possibly move around more? walk far distances to avoid bothering other people with your gastly smoke.. hmm.. so how about instead of smokeing go for a walk. you cant not keep a healthy wait buy eating right and exercising its impossible.. you may be gaining wait but its probably your body gaining back the wait it needs to be healthy and happy.
Yea its possible. The only reason you gain weight is because people who used to smoke have developed a habit and then you have taken that away people then start to mindlessly eat. We munch alot and we dont realize that every little finger food and every nibble and every 1/4 of a candy bar really adds up at the end of the day. When I quit smoking everyone tried to get me to chew nicorette and I hated it. I chewed alot of gum and everytime I thought I was hungry I really thought about why I had this feeling and whether it was emotional or physical hunger.
I-m sure. If you have the self control and motivation to quit then surely you can control the eating. If you do gain a little weight then your metabolism should get a little faster as the effects of smoking wear off and that could help shed those lbs. But if you feel that you-re eating has increased and you feel that you are gaining weight then when you have that craving to eat then brush your teeth. Most people don-t want to eat just after brushing their teeth. So hopefully this helps some or a lot! LOL! Good luck! I promise the slight gain that may come after is well worth it! You feel so much better when you quit smoking!!!
Yes, it is possible and I-m living proof. I quit smoking about 5 months ago and I haven-t gained weight - the key is not to substitute smoking with eating - chew on a straw or a pen or drinka glass of water everytime you feel the urge to smoke. Hope this helps. God Bless You!!!

Anybody every try hypnotism to quit smoking? Did it work for you? -

I bought an audio cd to try it. I have a question though. Do you quit and then do the hypnotism? Or do you do the hypnotism and you just don-t want to smoke? No instructions came with the CD so I don-t know what order to do things. Do you listen and then gradually quit? Thanks for the help, I really want to beat this smoking thing
Well, here-s how to do it. Sit down and make a list of all of your goals, no matter how trivial they may seem. Write your goals down. Find a quiet place where you can be alone and there will be no distractions. Begin your session with a normal voice. Use deep breathing to relax and focus your mind, body and spirit on your intentions. Once you are in a deep relaxed state, begin to count yourself down. Spend as much time as you need to in this vivid world. When it’s time to leave, talk yourself out of it as you entered.
One of the major advantages with using hypnotism to quit smoking is that a majority of people do not go back to the habit after the hypnosis process.

You can combine other quit smoking programs such as using a stop smoking herb along with hypnotism to quit smoking for even better results. There are basically two ways in which you can use hypnosis in order to quit smoking. While one method involves using the services of a certified hypnotherapist, the second method involves doing self-hypnosis.
I don-t think that it helps to all.

I suggest using quit smoking drug Chantix. Bcoz, it is a non-nicotine drug unlike other drugs and It inhibits the nicotine in cigarette smoke from binding to the nicotinic receptors in the brain and helps reduce the effects of dangerous nicotine.

Find all the details at:
http://www.quit-smoking-drug.com/chantix…

They are also providing free doctor consultation. Chantix is a prescription drug.
I don-t know anything about it but I know it worked for my uncle...give it a try

Can dipping be used instead of patch or other meds to help quit smoking? -

I know dipping isn-t good for me, and I-m not looking for a PC answer. Dipping helps ease the urge ALOT because of the nicotine, but it-s helping my body heal from smoking. Why isn-t it recommended for an aide rather than the patch wich does the same thing as dipping....releases nicotine to help with physical withdraw so you can focus on habit part first?
Dipping will allow the nicotine to go directly into the bloodstream, that is like going from smoking crack to making it a liquid and injecting it. Dipping is probably more addictive, just less popular. Good luck.
DIpping is just another way to get the nicotine, only without the smoke. It also raises your chance of mouth cancer. It is disgusting to look at and to watch people spit. Girls wont want to kiss you. You are addicted more to the nictotine than the actual smoking.
if you wish to quit smoking the best natural way is to avoid the situations or thing or people because of whom you smoke, you even directly say it to your mind that you have to quit smoking this will help you i have even quitted smoking.
replacement therapy for any addiction is only good if you change the behaviors associated with your addiction.

So your lungs are healing while you are giving yourself mouth and throat cancer.

Find something that isn-t nicotine to alleviate your withdrawals.

You-re not addressing the nicotine, you-re just feeding your addiction in different manner.

When you need a cigarette, try doing something, not just putting something into your body to alleviate the craving. This is going to sound really creepy, but nothing knocks out a drug craving like sex.

If you can go three days without nicotine, you have won half the battle. After 5 days, the cravings are psychological and not physical anymore and less intense.
Dipping isn-t typically used as a smoking cessation tool because of the increased risk of mouth cancer, and the fact that it-s just an unappealing habit to many (watching someone spit saliva soaked tobacco).

The patch is something you put on and don-t think about again...the gum is a bit more noticable (chewing)...but trying to get off tobacco by using tobacco, doesn-t make much sense...y-know?
Because dipping leads to throat cancer, tongue cancer, cancer of the mouth - look at those photos - you will get off tobacco very quickly!

Don-t be a dipstick! Your body is not healing, you are just relocating the problem. And fooling yourself.

What is the best way to quit smoking with the highest success rate? -

Don-t know about the success rate, but have faith in yourself. If you don-t have this, you won-t succeed whatever way you choose.
1.Stop placing cigarettes between your lips
2.Do Not place a lighted match or open flame to the edge of the cigarette
3. Do not suck on a cigarette between your lips when a flame is placed at the cigarette-s edge.
I can-t quote success rates for you, but I found out that there is a three-day hump. You should quit on a monday, AND go back to the gym the same day you quit. I don-t know why it worked, but after the three-day hump, it worked. Cold Turkey. Good Luck!

Any simple and effective ways?
I quit 4 years ago using the patch. And I was smoking 4 packs a day. Each patch last 3 days even though it says to take them off and reapply every 24 hours. So i managed to get 6 weeks worth with 2 weeks worth of patches. I bought 21mg and 14mg. Believe me, leave on for 3 days each. And you will NOT have any urge to smoke while on the patch. Now I was able to go cold turkey after 6 weeks. I still got urges but they were weak ones.....easy to pass. Thats my story.

http://www.stop-smoking-tips.com/

When I quit Smoking back in 86 everyone i knew
or worked around smoked, My wife, family just
about everybody. The only way I was able to quit
was when I took a week off from work, went to
a motel, lock myself in, and sweated it out. I Lived
on orange juice - aspirin for a week, but I did it.
In my opinion don-t bother with any medications or such you will become reliant on them to stay away from smoking the best way is to be positive and exercise your will power to refrain from getting back to smoking.

Quit and start focusing on all the benefits of quitting smoking and leading a healthier lifestyle, just my opinion.

This is a site with some good information to help you out
Ask your doctor to put you on Welbutrin or Cialis. Me, my friend and her husband all took Welbutrin and quit. After the first week or so cigarettes don-t taste the same, they taste yucky, so you really don-t want to do it anymore. The hardest thing for me was in the car, so it took a little longer for me than my friends, but I haven-t had a cigarette in 12 days and don-t want one. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!
There is no simple way.
I have at one time, smoked 60 a day.
I decided to give up when I realised how much money was going up in smoke and going into other people-s pockets, you can buy a car with the money you save?
First I carried an unopened packet on me.
You will find that as you go with out a smoke in the early part. The temptation is easier to resist, if you tell yourself that you are not going to let a little bit of tobacco push you around.
You will find that as the time between the urge to smoke gets longer, the urge will get more intense until the 18th day when the worst will be over. If you do give in to the temptation?
Do not give up because if you give up the smoking, you will be a stronger person for it.
If you are in a group of smoker and they offer you a smoke decline by saying no thank you. you may find that some one will deliberately tempt you, but any weak person will give in.
It takes a very strong and smart person to say NO and not give in GOOD LUCK.

Help! I am trying to quit smoking and now I cant even function at work!? -

I have smoked for ten years and a week ago I decided to quit. I have been on the nicotine patch for 4 days now but it only helps a few hours each day.

I am disoriented, moody, depressed, and have these crazy migraines all day long. I am also drinking a lot more coffee and tea to make up for the nicotine.

How can I function better throught the day while I am trying to quit smoking?
Instead of the patch, perhaps nicotine gum or lozenges might be a better answer for you? People who are social smokers, or have a regular smoking routine instead of chain smoking all day, often find that the little bursts of nicotine (and activity) from the gum or lozenges work better than the slow and steady action of a patch. If you were a very heavy smoker, you might want to use the patch PLUS gum or lozenges, but you should check with a doctor or pharmacist first.

Also, congratulations! If you-ve got through the first week, you-ve got through the worst week.
Check the strength of the nicotine patch as well, inside the pack it should come with a leaflet and it gives you symptoms of a nicotine overdose.
Symptoms are sweating, nausea, dizziness, confusion, headache, hearing and vision disturbances, stomach upset and weakness.I smoked a similar amount to you and was recommended to start on the heaviest patches and ended up getting a nicotine overdose, it just sounds familiar of what happened to me. All the best with giving up.
Well for gosh sakes your hyped up on caffeine.

Self control, the rest of us did it.
Awesome! keep at it you will get over that part and soon you will start to feel amazing. Phew! Doesn-t it feel better to know that the longer you stay away the lower your chances of getting lung cancer will be. Give yourself a break. You will twice as energetic at work soon to make up for lost prodcutivity. Think of all of the smoke breaks you are missing now.
a lady I work with sucks on licorice... it makes up for the mouth fixation. Just think once it-s over it-s over, you-re already four days into it, DON-T quit!! My parents smoked until I was a senior in HS and I have all these asthmatic problems from the second hand smoke, you are doing a good thing! Maybe you should stop with all the caffeine and sip iced herbal teas through straws, at least it wouldn-t have calories.

I-m trying to quit smoking I-m in need of help I-m on the patch but the need to smoke is still there anything you know that might help
Hey Chris,

I-ve tried just about every method there is out there with zero success.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Eventually a friend told me about a NLP method, check out this article:
http://www.squidoo.com/Not_Smoking_Any_M…

It’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!

I had acute/chronic laryngitis, the doc said i had to quit smoking, so i did, its been 3 months, and my voice is still husky, ive been resting it, and drinking, and i cannot sing even a note...its just a struggle, Any advice greatly appreciated? Thanks
I think you need to call your doctor back, there may be something that he can recommend to soothe your throat a little more effectively than the honey that I normally suggest to my patients.
Your decision to quit smoking was a very important step that will serve as a positive reserve for the rest of your life-I applaud you for that! Congratulations on your efforts and God bless.

How could i use the law of attraction to quit smoking? -

How could i use the law of attraction to quit smoking? -

Yes and no. You can-t really have -smoking- as part of the picture, so you have to want things like improved health, lung capacity, sense of smell, etc. As soon as you think -I don-t want to smoke- the LoA hears -smoke- and will offer you more opportunities to smoke. Even the stop smoking gum infers smoking.

Think about going hiking, or breathing the morning air, or going to the beach.

...and it wouldn-t hurt to bring along some gum or a Tootsie Pop or two, either, on your outing.

I have quit smoking for 6 days now , when will the craving get weaker ? -

I-m into the 6th day of not smoking , I often find my self thinking about smoking ALOT , I often get the urges to smoke all through out the day , when will this stop ?? Is it possiable in the future I can go a few days with out a craving ? where can i find a ex smoker support group in my area?
COLD TURKEY , IS, the best way. Your body needs to go through a state of De-toxication, usually a week or two.
It is suppose to but I still have the craving after 1 month. I keep a rubberband on my wrist and when I feel the craving i snap my wrist with the rubberband. Know this sounds crazy but it works for me. Good luck.
Did you quit cold turkey? Why didn-t you just try to ween yourself off of them.. When I quit, I would make a pack last a month... I-d smoke 2 hits and put it out... One cig would last me a day... I weened thats how I quit... I quit 15 years ago and I got fat too. But, then I found running and exercise. You have to replace your cravings with something else. How about 15 push-ups everytime you have a craving? Or 50 jumping jacks? That will shake ur system up..
I quit a 22 year smoking habit through Smoke Enders.(haven-t heard about them lately) At first we had exercises to decrease the amount of nicotine in our systems, but what I consider the MOST important aspect is: You have to change your thinking from being a smoker who isn-t smoking to a non-smoker. To look at someone who is smoking and thinking of them of being weak, and annoying rather than envying them. Figure out what your triggers are: When do you want to smoke the worst? on the phone, driving, coffee break and do your best to avoid those situations. Good luck and DON-T TAKE THAT FIRST ONE!!!!!
I quit after 55years plus a 5 pack a day plus

Hardest will be 3 weeks/3 months and 3 years

Made past the first 2
another week or so...it will get easier..don-t give up..you will have to relearn to do everything without a cigarette...I haven-t smoked in 31 years...but it took a long time to stop craving it...I went cold turkey..and was committed...they say it is the hardest addiction to kick!
I went cold turkey, too. It was the only way that worked for me and I-ve now been a non-smoker for four years! I cannot imagine going back. Don-t worry -- the cravings will go away very soon. In another couple of weeks, you will wonder why you ever wanted to smoke at all! Even the smell of second-hand smoke will bother you. If you really want something in your mouth, buy some gum. It really does help! (And it won-t make you gain weight... LOL!) Good luck!
Cold turkey is the only way to do it. I have tried all the other ways. I am 60 years old. Smoked for about 46 years. I now have COPD. I am on oxygen 24/7 and a lot of medication. I STILL WANT A CIGARETTE. Some days are worse than others. I have gone maybe two days without having the urge. I have not smoked since last May. Some days are going along quite well and all of a sudden it is like someone hits me in the head and tells me I need a cigarette..............

Every city has support groups. Call your local newspaper. Someone in your city knows where they meet.

You have to find something to eat. I have popcorn at night. Drink lots of fruit juice and water. Brush your teeth a lot. Walking is good too. Get on the computer. Answers helped me because you do have to think and your hands are busy at the same time.

Then at some point you start feeling better. The cravings lessen and you have found something to eat or drink that kind of fills the void.

QUIT and stay QUIT. You don-t want to end up like me. It is not a good life. Good luck and don-t give up..................
I have quit smoking 3 months ago now, and i have quit smoking 2 years ago and started again, but since three months ago i think about it every day especially when i smell other peoples, I-ve heard that people on average quit at least 8 times before quitting successfully, so you have to have will power and kind of test your self to see if you can avoid it, my boss has quit for 5 years and still wants one every day, it-s kind of like and alcoholic, you can-t ever go back, remember this you will think one is OK, and you will buy a pack before you know it.
IT SHOULD GET WEAKER SHORTLY.JUST HANG IN THERE. I AM PROUD OF YOU. KEEP IT UP. GOOD LUCK.
Groups are online and then you can find out about local. It is hard and some people have cravings forever. I quit 9 months ago and rarely have cravings now but they are really activities or situations that trigger memories rather than dependant cravings. My brother says he quit 39 years ago and he still wants one at times. My sister in law quit 8 years ago ansd says she had cravings for about six years. Each is different. I ate and got fat so don-t you do that. Best luck to you.
It-s coming soon!! Just hold in there, and don-t give up... that is so awesome!!

What does it take to quit smoking for good? -

To previous posters, Don-t be so inconsiderate.

Just don-t beat yourself up. Stay dedicated, if it get to hard, have one, or the patch, or the gum. But stay committed. If you stay committed you will make even though you didn-t quit overnight.
Persistance and a willingness to learn from your mistakes. If you quit and start smoking again, review just what triggered your smoking.
Ummmm...... Don-t ever put a cigarette to your lips again and light it... seems pretty straight forward to me.
decide to be a non smoker. those who try will fail. You are either a non-smoker or a smoker. It is up to you to decide. Remember what Yoda said -do or do not. there is no try-.
Lots of willpower, a good support system, and knowing that you are adding years to your life
-Never quit quitting- You keep trying. Forever. There will always be times that you will want one, even after you-re quit for years, but you resist.

It also helps to have some nicotine replacement helper when you first start out.

When you have a craving, work-out or do some deep-breathing excerises. To simulate the deep in-breath that you take when you inhale with smoking. Sugar-free hard candies help a lot, and having a toothpick can help as well.

If you find yourself in need of something to do with your hands, take up knitting (or similar) or find something for your hands to do!

Be strong! and Good luck!
When I quit (5 years ago) I sucked on hard candy everytime I had a craving
The same way any human breaks any habit they have. For the person who smokes to decide they no longer want to.

Yes you can! Don-t let negativity enter into your mind. I did it and so can you. Just make the commitment and the longer you go without smoking the less urge you will have.
Tried the patch, gross gum and those commit things. None of that crap worked at all! I used the program from this site - it-s wroked pretty well as I-ve been smoke free for a couple of months now - and my will power sucks!

When you feel like you want to smoke, drink or eat something and think what will happen to you if you continue smoking...(You do know, don-t you?) There are these things that you stick on your skin to help you and there is medicine.....GOOD LUCK!!!=)
You can stop.
First thing is concentrate on your motivation, this could be to save money, health or to stop a person you care about from smoking as well.
Next is method, patches, gum etc.
Tips, avoid others who smoke, go to no smoking places, treat yourself with money saved, over the years it will buy a house.
Think of the downside of smoking, emphysema, cancer, early wrinkles etc.
If you fail pick yourself up and try again.
Chew gum instead. I know it sounds lame, but chewing gum can be just as addicting as smoking. Also, cut yourself off of anywhere you could get tobacco. But what you really need is professional help. I know you are probably really afraid, but because tobacco products contain nicotine, an addictive substance, you-ll have a really hard time quitting on your own. Try nicotine gum or patches or something. YOU CAN DO THIS!
I quit on 09/09/90. Having smoked for almost 20 years.

In the end the only secret is - decide to quit, mean it - stick to it. Everything else is just how you do this. Sounds obvious, but it-s all about REALLY meaning it.
This site made me kick the habit. poke around it for an hour and you-ll want to quit afterwards.

Whats the best way to quit smoking? -

I have been smoking for 9 years now. I need to quit smoking, but part of my problem is that I really do enjoy smoking. What is the best way to quit? Please, no -just stop- answers.
Like everything in life, different things effect people differently. I did a combo of lozenge for a few days and then cold turkey after that. From what I-ve heard, getting a prescription for Chantix is a pretty painless way. You continue to smoke for about a week while taking this pill and then stop cold a week later. I think it blocks your nicotine receptors in the brain so they start tasting like crap.

Believe me when I say that I too enjoyed smoking. Or at least I thought I did. I smoked 2+ packs a day for more than 20 years. Once you-ve got some quit time under your belt you-ll see that you didn-t enjoy it as much as you thought you did.

Good luck!
Smoking need company to make it fun. If all your friends around you do not smoke, then you will not feel the fun. Chew something when you have the urge to smoke.
You can try to cut down slowly by 3 packets to 1 packets to few sticks and to 1 stick.
Try to play outdoor games as these games may keep you temporarily not to smoke.

How did you quit smoking cigarettes? -

I quit by using the patch. It wasn-t as hard as I thought. You have to want to quit. Really, really want to quit. I went through the whole 3 steps and have been smoke free for 4 months now.
Hubby just didn-t buy any more cigarettes and sucked on hard candy and chewed sugar free gum.
My mom got pregnant with me so quit cold turkey
I used the patch, but beware, you MUST REALLY WANT TO QUIT. If you are not committed, you will fail.
Cold turkey is definitely hard.
And the recidivism rate for the -patch- and -gum- are sad to say the least.
I agree, chewing gum or hard candy is definitely helpful, but it is hard when smoking or dipping becomes a part of your routine. Like smoking while driving, while quitting, driving may be annoying. They say that if you can get past the first 3 days cold turkey you have a great chance of keeping with it.

Don-t get discouraged and remember -YOU CAN DO IT!-
I said, -Enough of this.- And that was it.
Used the patch for a month and a half to get over the grouchy sleepies. Been smoke free for a year now.
How? You don-t buy any more. You don-t have any available and you don-t allow others to smoke in the same room as you are in.

I-ve smoked for 35 years, every single day. Until 2 days ago. None since then. 3 days in about 6 hours. They say if ya can go -cold turkey- for 4 to 5 days, the physical worst is behind ya. But that the mental part will never totally leave. I agree with that because I used them as a crutch for so many things. And if I couldn-t find a reason, well then boredom became yet another reason. I could chew one in half right now. Oh, and if there was one in the house, I-d probably smoke it before day 3 got here...... ;(

How do ya quit smoking? I dunno..... yet.
the way i quite was... i first just tryed my hardest to not buy anymore. and also using that nicotine gum really helps to.
Cold turkey after watching my Mother with CO-PD, Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema walk around with an oxygen hose behind her. I don-t want to live that way. It has change her life sooo much. She smoked 60 years. I wish she had quit years ago, but if she wasn-t sick, I bet she would still be smoking.

I Love My Mother but she doesn-t think she will have that much of a future. I hope that is not true. As long as she is alive, I-ll make sure she has as much fun as she can take. She can-t walk that much before she gets winded. She has to use a wheel chair with her oxygen canister on the chair, but I do take her out for some good clean air-mostly Sunday when there isn-t as many cars on the road. She loves it!.

Stop smoking somehow. It will be 2 years for me in August.
cold turkey the first time, then...10 years later, i started smoking again. now I am talking to my Dr. about Chantix. hope it works.

Heard about it from some friends it worked for. Heard it had some potentially scary side effects (graphic nightmares, severe nausea). Also heard it had been taken off the market due to increased suicides. Ordered it anyway. Any input greatly appreciated.
I smoked for 30 years. I have tried several different ways to quit over the years. The only thing that has ever worked for me was the Chantix. I took the months supply and haven-t touched a cig since. I do not crave cigarettes. They do not put nicotine into your system so it really cuts the desire. I didn-t have any adverse side affects at all. One thing you must do! You really have to have the desire to quit. Good luck
Well my mom took it to quit smoking and I think she only had strange dreams. Her brother also took it to quit but it took him waaaay longer to quit than her. She smoked for 40 years and is now smoke free for 3 years. She defiantly wasn-t nauseated when she took it. Hope this gives you some insight

i remember now the nauseating side effect was only at the idea of smoking a ciggarette. this is how the pill works. makes it to where when you smoke one it taste horrible and makes you feel off.

P.S My boyfriend and I both quit cold turkey no pills. But we are young and he smoked for i think 10 years and i smoked for 7 years.
I was trying to quit smokig and My doctor prescribe me chantax this week. I haven-t yet bought it but if it is that risky he wouldn-t have prescribe for me. I first used the patch but it didn-t help me that is why he I wanna use chantax. But now I have questions too since it might increased suicide. I don-t wanna kill my self.
I haven-t heard anything good about it so far. My wife and I started using the nicotine gum to try to quit, been on it for over 6 months now. We were amazed to find that you buy it at flea markets for around $5 to $15 a box. When you have to pay the $50 and $60 they want in the stores for a box you start thinking.............. wow, if I have to spend that much I-d rather be buying cigarettes! Good luck on quitting!
My cousin used it and he still smokes. It was more of a social thing for him.

On the other hand it worked for my grandma, but she did get severe nausea. She also has high anxiety while on the drug.
Have heard it works was going to try it myself... but now this information maybe not. I know I didnt try it because insurance does not cover it. Good Luck!!!
sounds like a cool drug, which street do i go for it? I can go for some nightmares.
no

What are some good ways to quit smoking? -

i did it for 12 days and then started again on new years and i just need some strong suggestions but i dont want the gum or patch... any help?
What are some effective ways to quit smoking?

While there is no one best way to quit smoking, you will be most successful if you are aware of the challenges ahead, find support, and prepare a plan to keep you on track. Here are some basic steps to quitting:

S = Set a quit date.
T = Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you plan to quit.
A = Anticipate and plan for the challenges you-ll face while quitting.
R = Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work.
T = Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit.

Be realistic. Quitting is not an easy undertaking. It requires effort, determination and commitment.
-Accept the fact that you need to quit. Do not deny the
adverse health effects that you are unnecessarily putting yourself (and those around you) through.
-Be prepared for anxious and resistant feelings. Since nicotine is habit-forming, just thinking about quitting may make you feel anxious – this is quite common. Give yourself a specified amount of time to identify and move beyond these feelings.
-Take quitting one day at a time, even one minute at a time—whatever you need to succeed and find support!
-Develop a quit plan that works best for your needs.
-Talk to your doctor or health professional to help develop a plan.
-Enlist the help of family and friends by telling them about your plans.
-Ask others who have quit how they handled withdrawal symptoms – both psychological and physical.
-Learn new behaviors.
-If you’ve tried quitting before, identify what did and didn’t work for you. Build on your strengths and discover new techniques.-
It is enough you quit smoking. That will be my victory. I want you to spread this to all your smoker friends and save them. Thanks for the compliments

Why not the patch?

I did the patch stepping down each 2 weeks it worked and in October I have been smoke free for a year.

Good Luck
Might need an anti anxiety pill to get thru the withdrawel
I-ve heard that you can take some tobaco and boil it, like a tea or something. Drink that up. You-ll get nausea, probably throw up if you-ve got a weak stomache, then you-ll have an aversion to tobaco and it-ll help a lot to counter your cravings.
Go to your doctor and get some CHANTIX, this medication if taken properly is helping people quit. Be warned though it is kind of expensive, but if you are serious about quitting, give it a shot.

also go to WWW.QUITNET.COM for some great support.

Good luck
There are already good suggestion in your answers. Do not give up. give it up again. It is a nicotine addict on and the cravings are diff cult to cope with. You also need something to do with your hands, in order to overcome the habit. a hobby such as knitting croche, playing piano, typing or what ever is done with hands is helpful. It is not doing something that you are used to do. There are many ways you can work at this and be succesful, and it will be the best thing you have done for yourself when you are free from nicotine. Is there a friend that is also trying to quit? Would it help to do it together? See yourself without a cigarette in your hand. Many others have done it and are smoke free, You will be able to do it. www.quitnet.com it is a good and informative site. God Bless you
Get on the patch!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you been able to quit smoking successfuly, how? Thanks!? -

I-ve been smoking about 30 cigs a day now for about 30 years. I-ve quit before for short periods, up to 6 months once. I need all the help I can get!
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
I smoked for 35 years, and wanted to quit. I told my doctor, who was more than happy to help. He gave me Wellbutrin, which helped with the cravings. I went to a county sponsored support group once a week, because you get 50% off coupons there for Nicorette etc. products. I drank alot of water to flush my system. Haven-t smoked in 9 month.
sure i did it,it wasn-t easy i did have to take xanax from my doc for about 6 months then winged off that, now i-m totally free from any addictions, you can do it it-s a nansty habit that needs to be broke and it-s definatly not worth your life.good luck
Ohhh, I so remember how it felt when I was in your shoes. I got so mad at myself - I smoked 1 or more packs a day for over 20 years and I really loved it. And I loved the people I smoked with - it felt like a special group of -us against the world- and we all bonded.
I got that patch over the counter. I slapped it on the first night just before I went to bed and didn-t smoke in the A.M. The urges I had were mainly psychological and I tried to stay as busy as I could. I had a stack of cards of all the reasons I wanted to quit - lungs, smell, wrinkles, etc. and I would pull them out when i was having a big urge and remind myself why I was doing it.
Take it one day at a time - say to yourself, I can go this day without smoking. If you put the patch on at night, it lasts until the next night so you are basically covered physically of having withdrawals. Psychologically is another story. I didn-t tell anyone unless they point blank asked me and no one did for about 2 weeks. :) I felt so strong! :) I did grieve for the cigarettes. I thought they were my friend and helped me get thru life. NOT true. Had to tell myself how my friend was hurting me. I decided not to wait until... like wait until the divorce is over, or until teens stop fighting, etc. I did that for 20 years! So I decided no matter what happened this is IT.
Other people thought I was crazy but it made me feel good to know I had a pack of cigarettes - unopened with a lighter next to them - right in my purse. I wanted them near me. I might be crazy but that helped me. That pack had to remain unopened. If you keep up with the patch you won-t have the phsycial withdrawals that get you.
I threw out that old package of cigs about 5 years ago. That was cool. I feel secure that I won-t need them no matter what happens and that if the world came to an end I could always run to 7/11 and get some more! :)
But when I turn 90!!!!....I-m gonna have a ball!
Good luck to you! It-s hard but you can do it!!
there is a new medicine called Chantix...it looks promising
I quit about 9 years ago.
The most important is to start trying to quit...Here is what I did:
First don-t tell anyone that you are quiting because when you have set backs it is easier to try again if you only failed yourself.
Then set goals like:
I-m only going to smoke 15 a day...then keep reducing it. If you don-t succeeded at first don-t beat yourself down just try again tomorrow.
Then keep your packs in inconvenient places...like I worked in retail and I would keep them in the truck. So I-d have to walk out and get one.
Make it a game...and don-t give up and don-t beat yourself down when you fail...because you will at first...but you-ll quit just keep trying!
I smoked for 50 years and quit using the patch.Start by putting the patch on at night before bed.Take lots of walks and drink plenty of water. It is very hard BUT you CAN do it.Just percerver/Good luck
Try Alan Carr-s book, Easy ways to stop smoking. No need to buy the more expensive books: just buy the first one he wrote. It really makes you see cigarettes from another perspective.

PS: the first pages seem to be a big advert for his clinics and his other books. But it only lasts for about 4-5 pages, so it-s ok, it-s not too annoying.
These are the ingredients, maybe it will help, I still cant stop smoking either though.

Hello i have Quit and it-s been 7 1/2 yrs i am 55 yrs and i did it with the Patch system , my wife quit at the same time also .
and i decided that i hated cigs anymore .i started to pull off the filters on them, i needed the nicotine so bad .
that-s when i hated them first( It needs to be that you Hate them)
smoking is mostly ,i think a mental thing you get a mind set and you are on your way, IT helps to have some one to call to and yell
BUG that means i am thinking about a cig, BUT just for a fleeting moment then you continue on with what you were doing
ask your Dr. about wellbutrin. it is a drug commonly given for depression, but it has the tremendous side effect of taking away nicotine cravings. I smoked over a pack of day for 20 years. Would turn into the worst monster imaginable when trying to quit. went on the wellbutrin and had totally stopped smoking within 2 weeks without ANY cravings. I remained on the wellbutrin for about 4 months, long enough to get the nicotine out of my system. worked wonderfully well for me.
After 25 years of smoking I was able to quit. That was just under 30 years ago.

No tricks or gimmicks, just make up your mind and quit -cold-turkey-.

I still consider myself addicted, and I-m sure that If I smoked one time, I-d be hooked again in very short order.
I mentally convinced myself over a period of time that I didn-t want to smoke anymore. I used 4 pieces of nicorette gum and was done. That was 7 yrs ago. Kind of like -I think I can, I think I can- until it just stuck. Only down side for me was gaining weight. Good Luck!
No I been smoking since 1966 when drs tell me to stop I tell them, -many people who quit got cancer, or discovered it, after they quit! So I figure if it ain-t broke why try to fix it?- Good luck w/e ya do!
