How can I get my dad to TRY to quit smoking? -

He always smokes in the house and it-s making me sick. Whenever somebody tells him to go outside, he goes -ugh- and ignores us! The only place in the house that doesn-t smell like smoke is the very BACK room. The worst part is, he smokes at his computer desk and the desk is right around the kitchen! HELP! IS there any free thing to help him quit smoking? Thanks!
Recently, my dad quit smoking after years of us encouraging, motivating, persuading, yelling, and cussing (you name it, we’ve done it). It was a struggle for so many years, but the fear of sickness finally convinced him to quit smoking. Many of us smoke (in fact, one third of all male in this world do), but none of us ever think about the harm it has on our body and our wallets. From experience, I won’t dare try to convince anyone to quit smoking, but here are some financial facts we should all consider every time we light a cigarette.

At $5 a pack of cigarettes, my dad could’ve accumulated $1.6 million in investment and savings. This is assuming that he would invest or save the money weekly for 50 years earning 10% annually. 50 years ago, the cigarettes were not $5, but my dad smokes more than one pack of cigarettes many days of the year too. This also does not include the cost of lighters or matches.
His life insurance is much higher because of his “experience” in smoking. Actually, we were told that his insurance would probably be 1/4 if he never smoked.
His health insurance is the same thing, read the life insurance point again
Non-smokers receive home owners insurance of about 10% because there are less chances that they will burn down their home
Non-smokers usually perceive a better image than smokers which indirectly lead to a higher salary. This is due to smokers potentially having yellow teeth, bad breath and smelly clothes.
Those extra packs of gum, extra trips to the dry cleaners all add up in our lives.
The list goes on and on. Smoking ranks as one of the most harmful activities we can do to our physical and financial health.
You can try to ask him politely if he can smoke outside and tell him that its out of respect. its your lungs hes affecting too. if he goes into the whole, -i pay the bills- lecture, explain to him that you understand, but your health is at risk too and you don-t smoke.

as for getting him to quit, you can try laying out the facts for him and posting them up or showing him. but im pretty sure hes heard all of it before right?

him choosing to quit is completely up to him. he HAS to WANT to stop in order for him to quit. he needs will power. you cant make him quit. its like every other drug addict, alcoholic, etc. its completely up to the person. they have to decide that what they are doing is not healthy, and then quit.

if he continues, well then you may just have to wait until you get older and move out. however, that is extremely disrespectful to you i must say. any parent who puts their kids through that is extremely selfish. i don-t smoke, but if i did, i would be doing it outside so my kids wouldn-t get sick.
just take his packet of cigarette and throw them in the garbage... dont let him see when you take it... and dont throw it where he can see... good luck,
i totally agree w this guy. you dad should have respect for the family, especially since its making you sick, and you guys dont smoke. good luck kiddo
Install water sprinklers in your home....when ever smoke will be detected they will start showering and this may help you...

What is the most effective way to quit smoking? -

I know cold turkey is obviously effective but the withdrawl symptoms are a little much. I-ve heard of pills, patches, and gums. Which one worked best for you or someone you know?
A prescription called Chantix. I was a 3 pack a day smoker for 45 years. My doctor prescribed it for me because my emphysema has gotten worse. I have tried everything and nothing except the Chantix has worked. It took 2 weeks before it affected my nicotine cravings. I have been smoke free for 3 months.
Fall in love with someone who cant stand smoking, worked for me. Also keep telling yourself all of the cons of smoking, Have you ever seen an older person and you could just tell from their appearance that they smoke? Do you want to have premature wrinkling and reek of tobacco smoke?
Sadly lung cancer works pretty effectively.

Either patches or gum depending on whether or not you like chewing gum. I doubt there-s much difference between them in effectiveness so much would depend on availability, your personality and also, I guess how much you smoke at present. I-m sure a pharmasist would give you better advice than anyone here on Y!A.
Try a Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking-.
cold turkey worked for me. I tried the gum and it didn-t work because I was just substituting nicotene from cigarettes with nicotene in a different form. I figured why do that? All I am doing is prolonging my pain. So I just toughed it out and quit cold turkey. The first month was really hard, but after that things got a lot better. I still think about cigarettes every now and then, but the thought goes away so quick it-s like nothing happened.

Question for any one that has quit smoking? -

Does anyone have any helpful ideas for quitting smoking..like i know theres patches n stuff but anything else or just general ideas like drinking lots of water ect.
What helped you quit....or was it.......COLD TURKEY.. :p eh
thanks
Hi - I quit 23 Feb last year and even now want to smoke! First up, you have to WANT to quit, if you dont want to (like I dont actually want to but HAVE to) then youll struggle.

Stay away from people / places with smoke for a few weeks to get over that -hump-, dont play chicken with how long you can stay in a smokey atmosphere as itll only make you break and have one lol

Distraction works great. If you have a hobby or pass-time, really focus on it in your spare time as this will help keep your mind off the cigs

I went cold turkey, no patches or anything, and I think Ive finally done it! Good luck to you. Drop me a line if you want to chat :D Bxx
i never found any easy way to give up cigarettes as it-s the hardest thing i every finally did (many attempts before it finally worked). The only way to do it is just to do it. Keep yourself really busy (- fit), brush your teeth lots to enjoy the experience of a fresh mouth - throw on a patch just to take some edge off the nicotene withdrawal. Good luck - although it takes ages the urge does go away - one day you will be an annoying ex smoker who hates smoking.
It Metaly hard even after 1 year.
Yaa , U will get these type of idea but always the best one is
the most simple one :-
do it :-

1) Leave friends who r used to smoke.
2) if wanna to smoke then generally try to get 1 cig. rather than a pack
3) try to search for a alternative for smoking

these r done by me and i got benefited.
Giving up smoking was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but in the end I did it!, I went cold turkey for about a month then decided I would try having one, I felt sick and dizzy and that made me stay away from them. My husband used the chewing gum, then went on to the patches, then started having peppermints to replace the cigs, it took a while but he did it.
Good Luck and I hope you succeed. Take care

Trying hard 2 make my boyfriend quit smoking. any suggestions? only genuine ones plz...its very imp!? -

Trying hard 2 make my boyfriend quit smoking. any suggestions? only genuine ones plz...its very imp!? -

my boyfriend has been smoking since the last 5-6 years...and i really want him 2 quit...he realizes the need 2 do so himself...and has tried several times...but is able 2 do so only for 2-3 days, after which the addiction takes over and he starts smoking again...plz help...want some good tips on how he can quit it permanently.
I smoked for 2 years and in the end, I just threw them away and never looked back. I know that-s easier said than done for a lot of people, but, I had a scare from this man that was shopping in my store and he was buying a nightgown for his wife who was in the hospital getting her trachea removed because of smoking. He asked me if I smoked and told me to go home and throw them away, -it ruins lives-.
I believe it was the sadness coming from his eyes that really shocked me.

Really, to curb the cravings, you have to substitute another activity to do during the times you formerly smoked. For example, after dinner I would put my shoes on and go walking to keep from thinking about smoking. I walked on my lunch at work and chewed a lot of gum. It worked, I haven-t smoked for 22 years.
Smoking leads to Cancer. you can collect some pics of mouth cancer patients due to smoking and show it to him. Please try to take him to a Cancer Hospital especially to the Mouth Cancer Ward. He will surely stop smoking.
well u should probably try this:
hide his smokes when u find them or come across them and when he want to smoke only give him 2 a day and c what happens and soon enough he would probably get tried of it and if he loves u he will understand.
Usually the government has a -stop smoking- program and helps smokers guide their way to stop. Search in your community for such a program and let him know that it-s easier if he-s with people who are going through the same thing. Also, some of these organizations sometimes have a contest and you can win a prize if you quit by a certain date.

Good luck to him!
I have been smoking on and off for the past 30 years. I quit and then go back. I recently stopped smoking with the help of Chantix and I-m determined to stay quit. If you have never been a smoker it-s hard to understand what he is going through. Just remember that smoking is worse than trying to quit drugs per my doctor. Be patient with him and help him. Hidding his cigarettes will only make more tension. Be supportive even when he fails. He will succeed eventually. This has been a habit just like habits others have. Good luck to you and him..
my remedy to smoking has been tested quite fruitful in most of the cases i had handled. i had applied this procedure with most of my friends and it turned fruitful. so i would suggest this procedure which you should adhere strictly. when ever your boyfriend goes for smoking , give him a deep kissssss. i would say for 10 minutes. then tell him to indulge in masturbation. this would keep him engaged and he would forget to smoke.

Quit Smoking?? -

I am going to attempt to quit smoking. Today I will try to avoid doing so.....can you offer me any words of encouragement as i have never tried to do it before? I-ve never wanted to, but I think i want to now. For my kids...i want to try. Any advice? Kind words?
Seek support!! Either from family or friends....anyone!! Support is the main goal in trying to quit!!
When you get cranky, go for a walk outside. Just keep reminding yourself why your are quitting and that you can do it. Also remind yourself that the crappy feelings you have are just temporary - in a week or two, you will feel better than you have felt in a long time. Also make sure you are eating healthy snacks and drinking lots of water.

Good luck!
you are either a master of them or a slave to them. It is up to you to really decide. You don-t need good luck or a patch, you just need to decide what you want to be.
i give you a lotttt of credit, that is sooo hard and im trying to quit right now too.. except im a teenager... idk if that makes it easier or harder...

but anyways....
just keep your mouth busy..
like always carry a water bottle or
something to drink... and eat healthy
foods when you get a craving for a cigg..
but most of all DONT give upp.

you should also do research on different foods you can eat that make ciggs actually taste bad, and taste good.... so you can avoid the foods tht make them taste good.
i read about that, but i cant remeber the websites i was on reading this, due to the fact that i was on a BUNCH of websties. lol

anyways im ranting... GOOOOOOD LUCK!
dont give up girl. your body doesnt need the nicotine.
There-s nicotine patches and gums ( which i tried all and no, i am still addicted ) but it works for some, not all. You could give it a try. Like you i got kids and many times i tried to give it up yet whenever i am stressed and especially after a meal i would involuntarily pick up a stick. Guess all these are just my pathetic excuses. But i wish you all the best and hope you succeed.
Think about how much you stink. Once you quit smoking your clothes, hair, skin, breath, kids and home will smell normal. Now they just smell like a bar. If you like clean consider that smoking is one of the dirtiest things that you can do. Furthermore, parents who smoke have kids who smoke.
YEAH!! GO FOR IT, IF YOU REALLY TRY YOU CAN DO IT!!! How-s that?
Hi Sara,
I am a former smoker (2 packs a day).
My advice is to have a possitive attitude. DO NOT tell yourself it is gioing to be hard to do. Tell yourself that you are going to do it and remind yourself of all the reasons you want to quit. When you have a craving, smile, laugh, and tell yourself -NO WAY-. When you have been 3 hours w/o a cigarette, don-t feel dred. Instead, feel proud of yourself and praise yourself. When it has been 24 hours, don-t think about how much you want a cig. Again, think possitive, and continue to pat yourself on the back.
No, it won-t be easy, but it can be done. The longer you go without them the better it gets. Don-t let it control you. You control it. GOOD LUCK and DON-T GIVE UP
Chew gum :D Buy nicotine patches, throw your cigerette packets out the window. Also i bet you have lots of will power, so just keep your mind off it by doing a hobby, working or watchign a film or something, Good luck ;)
good luck, im in the same boat. im going to try chantix a new perscription
I found the gum works well to curb cravings. Getting past the first three days is the hardest because that is the chemical addiction to nicotine working on you. After that it is a matter of kicking the mental habit. I would avoid drinking alchohol for a while because that is my major trigger. Also if you have any friends or family that smokes tell them you would appreciate it if they didn-t smoke around you. Good luck, its all mind over matter.
Just do it
Quit doing it. Its for your health and the kids. Second hand smoking is bad. Plus if they see you smoking naturally they might want to do it to when they get older. It may be hard at first because of the addiction but I know you can do it. Your lungs will be appreciating the fact that you are wanting to quit. Find something else to take the place of the smoking. Reward yourself everytime you you want to grab one and you don-t. Oh and your breath will smell better and everything thats around you. Less health problems, and the lines above your mouth from smoking won-t increase! And I think smoking kinda like makes your teeth darker. Anyways COME ON YOU CAN DO IT! PUT A LITTLE POWER TO IT!! YEA!!!!BOYAHH!!!!
thats so sweet doing it for your kids all the best xxxx
The thing that works best is really wanting to quit. You can TRY this and TRY that. Different things work for different people. But if you really want to quit, you will find your own way and make sure it works. Good luck!!
try smoking less ever day it Will get easy er as u go on
It is up to your mental attitude to quit it. Do it for your children as it will benefits them
i quit seven years ago. my husband had heart attack triple bypass. i knew he had to quit so it gave me the strengh to quit. i smoked three to four packs a day. i just said this is it . i never want to have to go through that like he did and i love him enough to stop. i feel so much better. he stopped to. if you really want to you can. i believe youy do or you wouldnt be writing this. also there is a new drug that is suppost to help. you can ask your dr about it.if you have will power and pray for the help you can do it with out anything. remeber second hand smoke is worse for your children than if they smoked. 1st give it up for your self than for the family.lots of luck.keep me informed and let me know how it goes. i beleive any one can do what they want if they put there mind tp it.
Good luck!
Keep yourself busy. If you feel the urge, try replacing it with a short walk or chew a piece of gum. Try staying away from other people when they are smoking, as this will tempt you. Congratulations on your decision and best of luck to you in quitting and becoming a healthier person for you and your kids.
Try not to bite anyone-s head off. I tried and tried to quit, and finally I got a rx from my doc for chantrix. The stuff actually takes away your desire to smoke. I had a pack in front of me and didnt even want one... it makes your stomach ache for the first week though, but it-s totally worth it. Good luck!
Congratulations!

You-re off to a good start by considering quitting smoking. Most people wonder if they can really do it, and what is the best way to quit. Being successful takes planning and patience. Sometimes it takes quitting 3 or 4 times before you are finally nicotine-free. Don-t get discouraged!

You are NOT alone! Eight out of ten students at MSU choose not to smoke and we want to help you join the majority. Know that you have resources on this campus to help you quit, such as nutrition counseling, fitness evaluation, and pharmacy services, as well as support groups that are available in the area. Information on these services is available throughout this guide and on the resource page listed on the left. It will take determination, but you can join the 80% of Spartan students who are smoke free.

Quitting Methods
There are various methods available to help you quit smoking. The choice of which to use is completely up to you. No method works best for everyone, so it may take some experimentation to see what is best for you. Some smoking cessation methods include:
Cold Turkey
Medications
Nicotine Replacements
Cutting Down
Accupuncture
Hypnosis

--------------------------------------…

Cold Turkey
This is the most common method used to quit smoking. About 10% of people that go cold turkey by itself will still be smoke-free after 1 year. Not very good odds, however, you can improve your chance of success by combining cold turkey with another method such as using the nicotine patch, hypnosis, or joining a support group. By adding another method, 75% will remain smoke-free after 6-8 weeks, and about 1 in 4 will still be smoke-free after a year.
Pro-s: Cold turkey works best because the smoker makes an immediate commitment to quit. This helps the person avoid putting off their quit date until -a better day-. There is no ideal better day.

Con-s: Many smokers have not examined their smoking situation very well. Immediate cold turkey without a well-thought-out plan of attack does not often succeed.

--------------------------------------…

Medications
Zyban
Bupropion hydrochloride (Zyban) was approved in 1997 to help smokers quit. The drug, available by prescription only, is also sold as an antidepressant under the name Wellbutrin.
Common side effects include insomnia, dry mouth and dizziness.

Treatment with bupropion begins while the user is still smoking, one week prior to the quit date. Treatment is then continued for 7 to 12 weeks. Length of treatment is individualized.

Dosing should begin at 150 mg/day given every day for the first 3 days, followed by a dose increase for most people to the recommended dose of 300 mg/day, starting on the 4 day of treatment. The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg/day, given as 150 mg twice daily. An interval of at least 8 hours between successive doses is advised.

People who have not made significant progress towards abstinence by the seventh week of therapy are unlikely to successfully quit during this attempt, and bupropion treatment should be discontinued.

The average wholesale price for bupropion is approximately $2 per day.

Chantix
The newest prescription drug Chantix, Varenicline tartrate, is only the second nicotine-free smoking-cessation drug to gain FDA approval. The active ingredient varenicline works in two ways - by cutting the pleasure of smoking and reducing the withdrawal symptoms that lead smokers to light up again and again.

The tablet will be taken twice-daily for 12 weeks, a period that can be doubled in patients who successfully quit to increase the likelihood they remain smoke-free.

The most common adverse side effects include: nausea, headache, vomiting, gas, insomnia, abnormal dreams, and a change in taste perception.

It is necessary with all types of medication to follow the doctor-s orders and use the products only as prescribed and/or according to labeling.

Studies suggest that everyone can quit smoking. Your situation or condition can give you a special reason to quit:

- Pregnant women/new mothers. By quitting, you protect your baby-s health and your own.
- Hospitalized patients. By quitting, you reduce health problems and help healing.
- Heart attack patients. By quitting, you reduce your risk of a second heart attack.
- Lung, head and neck cancer patients. By quitting, you reduce your chance of a second cancer.
- Parents of children and adolescents. By quitting, you protect your children and adolescents from illnesses caused by second-hand smoke.

Nicotine Replacements
Nicotine Patch
The nicotine patch releases a constant amount of nicotine in the body. Unlike the nicotine in tobacco smoke which passes almost instantaneously into the blood through the lining of the lungs, the nicotine in the patch takes up to three hours to pass through the layers of skin and into the user-s blood.
The patches are similar to adhesive bandages and are available in different shapes and sizes. A larger patch delivers more nicotine through the skin.

The patch must be worn all day, and cannot be put on and removed as a substitute for a cigarette. Most of the patch products are changed once every 24 hours. One particular patch is worn only during the waking hours and is removed during sleep.

Wearing the nicotine patch lessens chances of suffering from several of the major smoking withdrawal symptoms such as tenseness, irritability, drowsiness, and lack of concentration.

Patches range in strength from 7mg-22mg of nicotine, depending on the brand, and whether the product uses a single dose regimen, or the -step down- approach. The -step down- approach gradually weans the user off therapy over a set number of weeks.

Some side effects from wearing the patch may include:

- skin irritation
- dizziness
- racing heartbeat
- sleep problems
- headache
- nausea
- vomiting, muscle aches and stiffness
Average retail price for over-the-counter transdermal nicotine patches (starter box) is approximately $4 a day. Patches are available at Olin Health Center Pharmacy for approximately $25-60.

Nicotine Gum
Nicotine gum delivers nicotine to the brain more quickly than the patch however, unlike smoke, which passes almost instantaneously into the blood through the lining of the lung; the nicotine in the gum takes several minutes to reach the brain. This makes the -hit- less intense with the gum than with a cigarette.

Nicotine gum is not designed to be chewed like normal gum. Rather it is used in the -chew and park- method. When you insert a piece of gum into your mouth, chew it a few times to break it down, then park it between your gum and cheek and leave it there. The nicotine from the gum will make its way into your system via the blood vessels just under the lining of the oral cavity. If you continue chewing without parking, the nicotine will be released directly into the saliva in your mouth, which will eventually be swallowed, leaving you with a nasty stomachache and a craving for a cigarette.

Nicotine gum contains enough nicotine to reduce the urge to smoke. The over-the-counter gum is available in 2mg doses (for smokers of 24 or fewer cigarettes each day) and 4mg doses (for smokers of 25 or more cigarettes each day). One piece of gum is one dose; maximum dosage should not exceed 24 pieces per day.

Nicotine gum helps take the edge off cigarette cravings without providing the tars and poisonous gases found in cigarettes. It is a temporary aid that reduces symptoms of nicotine withdrawal after quitting smoking.

Nicotine gum must be used properly in order to be effective. Steps for nicotine gum users include:

- Stop all smoking when beginning the nicotine gum therapy.
- Do not eat or drink for 15 minutes before using, or while chewing the gum (some beverages can reduce its effectiveness).
- Chew the gum slowly on and off for 30 minutes to release most of the nicotine. Parking the gum between the cheek and gum allows the absorption of nicotine into the lining of the cheek.
- nough gum to reduce withdrawal symptoms (10-15 pieces a day but no more than 30 a day).
- Use the gum every day for about a month or so, then start to reduce the number of pieces you chew a day, chewing only what you need to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Discontinue use of gum after three months.
- If the gum sticks to your dental work, stop using it and check with your medical healthcare professional or dentist. Dentures or other dental work may be damaged because nicotine gum is stickier and harder to chew than ordinary gum.
- The average retail price for nicotine gum is approximately $4.50 (10 pieces) a day for average usage during the first six weeks of use.
Nicotine Lozenge
In 2002, the first and only over the counter nicotine lozenge meant to help smokers kick the habit was introduced to the market.

Nicotine lozenge comes in the form of a hard candy, and releases nicotine as it slowly dissolves in the mouth. Eventually, the quitter will use fewer and fewer lozenges during the 12-week program until he or she is completely nicotine-fare. Biting or chewing the lozenge will cause more nicotine to be swallowed quickly and result in indigestion and/or heartburn.

Nicotine lozenge is available in 2mg or 4mg doses. One lozenge is one dose; maximum dosage should not exceed 20 lozenges per day.

Each lozenge will last about 20-30 minutes and nicotine will continue to leach through the lining of the mouth for a short time after the lozenge has disappeared. Do not eat or drink 15 minutes before using the lozenge or while it is in your mouth.

Do not use nicotine lozenges for longer than 12 weeks. If you feel the need to continue using the lozenges after 12 weeks, contact your healthcare professional.

The most common side effects of lozenge use are:

- Soreness of the teeth and gums
- Indigestion
- Throat irritation
The average retail price for nicotine lozenge is approximately $6 a day for average usage (12 doses) and up to $12 a day for maximum usage (20 doses) during the first six weeks of use.

Nicotine Nasal Spray
Nicotine nasal spray, dispensed from a pump bottle similar to over-the-counter decongestant sprays, relieves cravings for a cigarette.

Nicotine is rapidly absorbed through the nasal membranes and reaches the bloodstream faster than any other NRT product, giving a rapid nicotine -hit-. This feature makes it attractive to some highly dependent smokers.

The most common side effects due to the nasal spray are nose and throat irritations.

A usual single dose is two sprays, one in each nostril. The maximum recommended dose is 5 doses per hour or 40 doses total per day.

The average retail price for nicotine nasal spray is approximately $5 a day for average use (13 doses) and up to $15 a day for maximum usage (40 doses).

Nicotine Inhaler
The nicotine inhaler consists of a plastic cylinder containing a cartridge that delivers nicotine when you puff on it. Use the inhaler when you have a craving for a cigarette. Use no more than 16 cartridges a day for up to 12 weeks.

Although similar in appearance to a cigarette, the inhaler delivers nicotine into the mouth, not the lung, and enters the body much more slowly than the nicotine in cigarettes. The nicotine inhaler is available only by prescription.

Each cartridge delivers up to 400 puffs of nicotine vapor. It takes at least 80 puffs to obtain the equivalent amount of nicotine delivered by one cigarette.

The initial dosage is individualized. The best effect is achieved by frequent, continuous puffing for 20 minutes. One cartridge will last for 20 minutes of continuous puffing and deliver 4 mg of nicotine; only 2 mg are actually absorbed. This is the equivalent of about 2 cigarettes. The maximum suggested dose is 16 cartridges per day.

Side effects include irritation of the throat and mouth in the beginning. You may also start to cough but you should get over this after a while, if not make sure to consult with your doctor.

The average retail cost of the nicotine inhaler is approximately $45.00 for a package (42 cartridges).

--------------------------------------…

Cutting Down
This method involves cutting down the number of cigarettes smoked by a few per day. If you smoke 21-30+ cigarettes per day, cut back by 5 every day. If you smoke 11-20 per day, cut back by 3 cigarettes per day, and if you smoke 10 or less then cut back by 1 a day. Quitting Day follows the day after you have reached 5 cigarettes per day.
Example: If you smoke 30 cigarettes per day, cut back as follows:
Day 1: 30 cigarettes
Day 2: 25 cigarettes
Day 3: 20 cigarettes
Day 4: 15 cigarettes
Day 5 10 cigarettes
Day 6: 5 cigarettes
Day 7: Quit Day

Pro-s: Cutting down can help build confidence and gain insight into your smoking habits.

Con-s: Some people find it difficult to taper off because they feel tempted to smoke one more cigarette than they should. Also, some people inhale stronger and hold the smoke in longer to take in a greater amount of nicotine per puff when trying to cut down. If temptation is a problem for you, this method may not be best.

--------------------------------------…

Acupuncture
Acupuncture uses small needles of different lengths and sizes to stimulate the skin in a particular area of the human body. The area for stimulation is chosen corresponding to meridian or pathway that provides energy to the affected body field or area. In case of smoking cessation, needles are inserted in the areas that will affect energy flow to the mouth, lungs and respiratory system as well as parts of the brain that generate cravings for tobacco smoke.
It is proved in studies that smokers who are given acupuncture treatment have less desire to smoke and their smoking actually decreases after the treatment of acupuncture. It has been proved over and over again that people who receive acupuncture treatment are twice as likely to quit smoking than people who smoke.

But, it is also important that you follow some simple things to receive the full benefit of the acupuncture treatment. They are:

A smoker receiving acupuncture treatment to kick the habit must get it twice a week for three weeks without any gap, for the treatment to be fully effective.
The smoker getting the medication will be taught to do self acupressure on ears in order to reinforce the treatment and help cravings to pass.
It is always better to use this method with other therapies such as nicotine replacement therapy or support groups.
Even if acupuncture can not help you recover fully, it will surely help you reduce the cravings and the amount of cigarettes you smoke will diminish to a large extent.

Hypnosis
Hypnosis is concentrated relaxation. In other words, hypnotism allows a person to relax, while focusing on a particular problem or desired result. It-s not just relaxing or falling asleep. During hypnotherapy, you relax your mind and body, moving past the guard of your conscious mind, to the subconscious mind. Your conscious mind constantly edits and grades and judges your thoughts and inputs. Your subconscious mind is a sponge waiting to absorb whatever you give it. Your subconscious mind doesn-t know the difference between reality and imagination. Therefore, if you can get past the locked gates of your conscious mind to your subconscious mind, you can feed the subconscious -imagined reality.- So if you can imagine yourself as a non-smoker, your subconscious mind will accept that as reality.
By reprogramming your subconscious mind you can change your actual behavior. Hypnosis is the key to removing the barrier your conscious mind places in front of you, and reaching the subconscious.

Hypnotism to stop smoking is an excellent way to end your smoking habit because the success rates are possibly double that of the patch and gum. You can also use hypnosis together with other stop smoking programs like the patch to achieve even better results.

There are a couple of ways that you can use hypnosis to stop smoking:

- Self-hypnosis
- Hypnotherapy by a certified hypnotherapist
Self-hypnosis involves using techniques to relax yourself, and guide yourself through the images that can make quitting smoking work. This technique can take practice and time to master.
A hypnotherapist is typically certified (or should be) and has specific training and expertise to help you relax and guide you using specific images and words that work to help a person quit smoking. Some hypnotherapists will offer a one-session program, while some may suggest multiple sessions to make sure you succeed.

A third alternative is really a combination of these first two methods: a recorded program produced by a professional, that you listen to in the comfort of your own home or office. This option is far less costly than visiting a hypnotist in person, and it gives you flexibility and repeatability in your program.

you can do anything that you put your mind to...as long as you truely want to do it. if you don-t want to do something, then believe me, you won-t.

i know this isnt like trying to quit smoking, but i bit my nails for 13 or 14 years, and my mom and aunt told me that if i stopped, they would take me to a broadway play in NYC (i live in CA so that offer was awesome!) so i just quit cold turkey. i grew my nails out, got a french manicure, went and saw the play, and i havent bitten my nails since! :)

so dont give up!! and remember the benefits of not smoking, you will feel sooooo much better!! and pray for encouragement!
if you read your question again you will have the most powerful words of encouragement.. you sat a goal infront of your eyes (your kids) and you-re gonna make it for them..

I used to be a smoker myself and i knew what quiting smoking means (somehow non-smoker sees it easy) but let me tell you sister, it is EASY.. and you-re gonna feel better every tick of the clock.. i promise..

whenever you feel the urge to smoke.. drink a cup of cold water.. eat some peanuts.. walk for 5 minutes.. or anything to get the time passing for your first day..

the second day will be easier because you have done a great job in quiting smoking for 24 hours..

the third day you will never feel that you never had put any ciggertte in your mouth..

wish you all the best..

and keep going
First week is always the toughest, stay away from places where smoking is permitted, don’t hang out with friends while they smoke, and keep yourself busy so u won’t have time to think about cigarettes.
Congrats on the decision! Your kids are worth it. You need to set a good example. I have been quit for 4 and half years, and will never go back. My tips are as follows:

-get some nicorette gum for the bad cravings, but don-t just use it whenever... wait for the tough times
-stop doing the things that really make you want to smoke. For me, it was hanging out with a specific crowd of people that I always ended up drinking with. (Drinking for me was what made me fail)
-You really have to make up your mind once and for all, that you are ready to give up everything about it. Be honest about why you smoke: image, extra breaks at work, meeting people outside, etc. The power of your mind is really how you will get through it, so make sure your whole heart is in it! Remember: stress relief can be done in many other, more productive ways!
-replace it with excercise (kill two birds with one stone by quitting smoking and getting more fit!)
-if you mess up, don-t throw in the towel and start back up again, just say -Wow, I was actually able to go a whole day/__ without one- Doing it gradually is fine!
-Reward yourself. Take all the money you would normally spend on smokes and buy something just for you with it- yoga classes, clothes, shoes, vacations etc.
alright for me today it is ONE WEEK of no cigarettes. i started by cutting down to about two or three a day, and it-s been one week since i-ve actually smoked one. what keeps me from smoking is i look at women who have been smoking their whole lives, who have a billion wrinkles and yellow teeth and i think... no, i wanna look good still when i-m 50-60 years old! not like that! it-s rough when i-m around smokers... but make sure you NEVER give in and buy a pack even if you want to -keep one around just in case- no! don-t do it! good luck, if i can do it... you can too! if you ever need more advice with it, just ask.
Don-t say you-re gonna -try.- Say -I-m quitting today.- You have to WANT to quit, which you do!! And what a good Mother you will be. When you quit, just feel proud to say, -No thank you. I don-t smoke.- I quit over 20 years ago cold turkey. It-s really easy if you want to. The cravings will be completely gone in 2 weeks. Chew gum if you get the urge. Throw ALL your cigs away , even the butts. Congrats! In 6 months your lungs will be all pink again! Just do it!! :)
Hey,
I just quit about 11 eeks ago and it is seriously one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I feel 100 % better than I used to.So please just take it from me, it will be hard for the first week or so, but after that it-s a piece of cake.
Ya, good luck. Just don-t take up eating and get fat.

How does the laser treatment to quit smoking work? where do you go to have this done? -

A low level laser (no stronger than a light bulb) is beamed onto certain pressure points and this said to help reduce the effect of withdrawal symptoms. This is similar in principal to other unconventional but more ancient methods such as acupuncture and reflexology.

When we smoke endorphins are released in the brain. This gives us a feeling of pleasure that we want to experience again and again. That is how we get hooked onto smoking. Laser therapy is said to release these endorphins, mimicking the act of smoking. Smokers have even said they walk out of the clinic feeling like they have just smoked a cigarette. This -nicotine mimicking- can last for as long as 9 months. It is said that cravings and withdrawal symptoms will be very minor during that time. The theory is that quitting will become much easier.

I don-t believe that this will help you to quit. There is no clinical studies that prove that this method works. It is sill very much in the experimental stage. The Smoking Products link below has more info on the subject.

how do i cut back on the sweats i cant seem to out the candy bar down down sice i quit smoking
Im still a smoker, but My sister just quit and she had the same problem.
But she said she just bought lost of gum and tick-tacks. Just stuff that you can chew on or whatever to take away the cravings of food and smokes. She said it works really well, so maybe it would help you.
I wouldn-t tell you to -do something else- as somebody said... That-s just replacing one addiction with another, doesn-t solve your problem... You have to ask yourself what-s the inner need that-s getting you addicted and work on that, then you won-t need to replace anything, you-ll just be free of the addiction.
Do something else. You are obviously replacing a cigarette with a candy bar, I know you know that. Well, when you crave a candy bar, take a walk outside instead or count to ten or chew some gum. Just some thoughts.

* This was humorous: -You have to ask yourself what-s the inner need that-s getting you addicted and work on that, then you won-t need to replace anything,---ha,ha,ha,ha,....
smoking also involves an oral fixation so get some lolly pops or suckers. it-s less calories than candy bars but you need to brush more often because your teeth will be constantly coated with sugar if you use them all day.

I want to quit smoking and i have 3 kids please help!? -

My house-hold is very stessful and i-ve already tried to quit once. After about 2 weeks (on the patch) I became so irritable, I began to yell at my kids for no good reason and they are only 2,3, and 4. they aren-t old enough to understand that it-s not their fault that I am mad. Also, my fiance works 2nd shift so she spends all morning with the 2yr. old while the 3 and 4yr. are in school. and when they come home mommy is at work until after they go to bed. She also smokes and refuses to quit unless i do it first! I want to quit so bad but, i don-t want to take it out on the kids but I don-t know what to do. Please help! I-ve been smoking for 10yrs. and never around the kids (only in the addition or outside, while away from the kids ofcourse)
I can relate, I quit 5 years ago after smoking for 30 yrs. I used the gum, mostly. I just told my stupid head into believing that IT WOULD WORK, and it has. I still chew the gum for special things, otherwise I-d smoke. I-d go back in a hearbeat if it wasn-t so bad for me. As far as berating yourself about the kids, I-ve been there too. If it-s severe enough, ask your doc for a script of welbrutin, it may help, it helped mellow a friend of mine. Set a date, and check the Lung Associations web site, they probably have more help. When you-re ready, you-ll do it. That-s how I felt, either I-d do it or die an early death. Everyone in my family dies of heart attacks, so figured I couldn-t be stupid anymore, you know, like time to grow up!!!!!
chew on the chewing gum . they will -stop- you from smoking as your mouth will be occupied by gums.
Believe it or don-t, but here you go. Get hardcore into your Church. Do good for others and worship God. Start eating right (no extra sugars or sodium), run 2 miles 3 times a week (at least). Do push-ups every day (you pick a good amount, but make it hard.) Read a good novel (I recommend War and Peace). A stable life with direction such as the above is the most effective way to kick bad habits. If you can-t do this, you may have problems with relapse in the future.
If u want to quit, eat limes, or chew gum.
If u dont want to quit, take vitamin C and eat lung foods like
celery,apples, fruit juices,carrots etc.
If you have a regular Dr. discuss this if your seriuous enough about quitting, there are new meds coming out to help quit, have to tried Zyban..
im in the same situation i think the best thing to do is find something to replace smoking, e.g take up kickboxing (or somthing similar)
I was smoking 10 years and quit cold turkey..... it is easier than it sounds...i had previously tried to quit using patches and the longest i lasted was 2 months.... the problem with patches are they continue to feed the addiction. Joel Spitzer is a champion who wrote a book free to download from the web which I read (with smoke in hand) and by the end had quit smoking and I have lasted a year now. His message is simple -never take another puff-. If you are keen to quit and want to stop nicotine ruling your life read this book and never take another puff.. Good luck buddy and cheers to Joel
Medical Makeover recommends quitting smoking last because it is the hardest and you need to be very rested and stable . They say quite caffeine , sugar and other stuff first, then when you-re calm . . . quit smoking . . . and even then they say check into a motel for a couple of days because you will be CRANKY.

BUT , I quit 2 packs a day in 15 minutes !
At one point it dawned on me that I was addicted, that some inanimate plant had more power than me and I got mad. I shredded them and stomped them into the ground and cussed them with f*** yous while I was stomping.
Maybe if you thought about the reality . . . that you are a slave to a mindless , potted plant . . . you might get angry enough to quit on the spot.
Best of Luck, your kids need a healthy dad
Not to mention the thousands of $$ you-re flushing on the cigs !
next time u try to quit on the patch.. try using the inhalent/ or gum aswell when your getting stressed . worked for me .. also dont forget to take 5 mins break every now and then like when u would nip out for a ciggy try taking some deep breaths ( which you do when u smoke) sounds silly but it does help :)
I am a healthcare provider and I have been ordering a new drug called -Chantix- for smoking cessation. I have had great results with people being able to quit using this medication. My own son is now one month free of cigarettes....and still counting. There is a website for this new medication, if you-d like to read about it. Go to your healthcare provider and ask for a prescription and try it.

How did you quit smoking? -

cigarettes, that is!
The main thing is finding a new addiction. Once you have a gaping hole for a habit you used to do, the only way to keep going is to replace it with something else. The biggest reason why people can-t quit is because you-re just standing there waiting for -the break-. Here-s some suggestions:

Become an exercise/health addict:
-You-ll be into repairing the damage done by the ciggerettes and getting more fit in the process. You won-t be so bored to have time to smoke.

Or...

Start teaching yourself an instrument or taking lessons:
-You-ll have your mind on something else.

Anyway, those might not be the best suggestions. Whatever you subtract from your life you need to add something of close to equal value in order to keep going.
I tried everything on the market for the first few attempts.
patch,gum,pills you name it.
I finally just gave them up cold turkey, stopped hanging out for a while in places people smoke(yes that meant not going out for a few weeks) substituted with the standard gums, and sugar free mints and the last trick I used was each time I was ready to break down and smoke another, i told myself to wait one more hour. then I would just keep doing that.
I found out that I had more willpower than I thought I did when I really wanted to quit.
Good Luck!
I saw all my family dieing off from cancer. They where all smokers. Once I got past the first 3 days it got easier. Don-t give up, it can be done!
dont buy em
its that simple
I used a prescription drug called Chantix for the first month. A lot of gum and sunflower seeds since then. Been tobacco free a little over 7 months so far.
Analysed the cost/benefit situation and decided cig-s where a waste of time and money. Alcohol gives way more bang for your dollar.
A Yahoo search for -how to quit smoking- will give you a wealth of useful information and advice.

The urge should go away after about three weeks however for about the next year or so you will have to deal with not only moodiness but the coughing up of all kinds of gross stuff while your lungs try to heal themselves as best they can. It is totally worth it though.
congratulations on quitting smoking, hope you stick with it. It-ll feel good to get compliments on how good you smell for a change. :)
It depends on how long you smoked before you quit.. Some effects after you smoke are weight gain, caughing up flemm, and occasionally you-re in a pissy mood. But dont worry it-ll go away as for the weight gain just eat what you usually eat and within time that should go away too. Congratulations by the way and good luck
well..... keep drinking coffee....
not to thank about it
I quit smoking to go on birth control pills almost 2 months ago. Apparently the combination of the pill and cigarettes is very dangerous for later in life, I mean, not like I won-t already be unhealthy later from just smoking, but I guess now I have a daily reminder of a reason to quit. The point is it-s been almost two months and I still get the occasional craving, particularly when I-m around my smoking friends. And I didn-t even smoke every day, maybe a few times a weekend and occasionally at school.

I just got out of rehab for drugs and alcohol. Before, I wasn-t much of a smoker but once I entered rehab, I became a full blown smoker...Now I smoke almost a pack a day and I really want to quit. However, I smoke because I still get cravings for alcohol and drugs and cigarettes kinda help me...But the whole reason I quit drugs and alcohol was because I didn-t want to kill myself anymore, and I feel guilty now because I-m doing the exact same thing with cigarettes...
I think this is one of your best decisions. You must know what are the advantages of quitting:

to get rid of nicotin in someone-s blood - to do cleansing and not for only 1 month.
anna97@yandex.ru
Nicoderm CQ
Drink distilled water because it helps pull the nicotene out of the body quicker than regular water.
Find your triggers. Mine were: behind the steering wheel, when I had coffee - when I was on the phone. Then put health snacks in those areas, such as carrot sticks, celery sticks, hard candy and/or cinnimon sticks. This will help satisfy the hand/mouth fixation.
Lastly, go to health food store - buy the herb lobelia in pill form or tincture. It not only tricks the body into thinking it-s got nicotene when it doesn-t, but it helps relax you as you go through the nicotene withdrawal.
i think anyone could be willing to stop smoking its just something that you have to do and believe that you can do that!!!

Ive been trying to quit smoking for 3 years, any real advice? -

i picked up my first cigarette when i was 11, and ever since i can-t stop. it-s starting to effect my look, soccer, and wrestling, and i find myself itching for another every minute.
Wait 10 minutes every time you think you want a cigarette. In a week, wait 20. Etc. Some people swear by -cold turkey- Do what works for you.

Whichever: Avoid people, places and things that are triggers. If you want a cig with your beer, give beer up for a while. Find activities you like better than smoking.

Really want to quit smoking. Need some suggestions from those who quit!? -

I have my first cigarette within 3 minutes of waking up in the morning. Cup of coffe and a cigarette. (It-s disgusting and I know it!). Those of you who have quit, how did you stop that first cigarette of the day? I want to start tapering off and begin taking Chantix. If I can postpone that first cigarette that in itself would be an accomplishment! So, what did you do when you got up instead of smoking? (and don-t tell me to stay in bed lol)
Chantix worked for me. You can still smoke for the first week you take it. I figured it out and timed it so I had my last smoke at bedtime the night before my second week started. Then I used gum (regular, not nicotine), sunflower seeds, and Tootsie Pops as substitutes. It was a challenge, but I-m nearly six months smoke free so far. Just make sure after you have that last one that you don-t have any more smokes around. I went so far as to get rid of all my ashtrays and empty all the ones in the vehicles as well. Get rid of as much temptation as you can because you will get cravings. I still get them now, but a plain old stick of gum is all I need to take care of it. Best of luck to you!!
I have been smoke free for almost 3years. I-ve tried the nicotine gum nasty and patch are expensive. the pills I tried as well and had to stop taking them got one of the severe side affects. the best way I found I tried several times with out sucess but kepted trying. you have to prepare yourfelf mentally. then one day it will happen and you will make it. I went through a lot of chewing gum and hard candy, drink alot of water to flush your body. exercise also helped me as well. plus having friends and family helping along the way. the best way is just put them down. Good luck and best wishes
i haven-t quit yet but i-ve been close. you need to be very consious of what you-re doing. i-ve actually forgotten that i was trying to quit b/c it was such habit. try putting a note for yourself over your cigarettes before you go to bed reminding yourself to wait 10 minutes before you light up. or make a small list of things to do before you can have a cigarette. brush teeth, make coffee, take shower, etc. when you-ve waited the alotted time, pat yourself on the back and try waiting 5 more minutes. also, smoke only outside. pitch the ashtrays too. i wish you all the luck you need. i-m going to start the chantix myself soon. hope it works for you.
chew gum instead, also use patches.
Do something else when you first wake up. Like talk a short wake then take a shower. Turn that negative into a positive.
What you did is reinforcing yourself to smoke. Smoking is not a habit but 100 of habits:
1. you smoke at the morning
2. when you have coffee
3.yada yada
try not to smoke at morning first, then go to before coffee.
Maybe not taking cofee will help, change to other beverage.
reward urself if you can quit one habit.
Good luck.
Use Chantix when you get up. For more Chantix information, click the following link:
http://www.121doc.com/champix.html?a_aid…

Patch or chew a piece of nicotine gum instead to help. Nicotine gum or the patch is healthier than smoking. Start with one cigarette at a time. Replace 1 cigarette a week with a piece of nicotine gum and then cut down as you feel ready.
i have no idea but if you find a way please tell me so i can get my boyfriend to quit
Quiting smoking is really hard. I went on the patch at first. Don-t waste your time though, it doesn-t work. Take the medicane that-s what helped me. And when you start taking it, you don-t have cravings. Yes, you will think about it because it-s routine now, but just control and don-t smoke. There-s no point. Good luck !

use a twelve step program substitute smoking as your addiction
don-t start
I have tried everything on the market even prescription the only thing that I found that really works if your willing to quit is a prescription called CHANTIX it isn-t cheap but it works good.
will power, determination, lots of gum and cleansing the body of the toxins. cleansing helped allot. If you can get past the first four days you are in the clear.
Just be positive about it.
Study where you don-t smoke, how much you smoke a day, cut day a little at a time, hang around places where you never smoke, but give it time
For me it was to lay them down and walk away.

Why are my biopolar moods swings getting worsts and i have quit smoking? -

Nicotine is the most addictive drug, worse than heroine. I wouldn-t even consider quitting without the patch, gum or lozenges. Do you have any of those? Nicotine withdrawal is very stressful both mentally and physically. Stress of course will make your illness worse. Good luck honey hope this helps.
I agree; nicotine withdrawal is very difficult, so use strong patches first, then weaker, then not at night, and have things to occupy your hands, and strategies for special occasions, when you would normally smoke. Consider trying www.freehypnosis.com - addictions. I use one of their free ones to help maintain focus.
Smoking is a natural antidepressant, you may have been medicating yourself. Also, depression is a normal part of nicotine withdrawal.

And remember, if you smoke cannibis, you are a smoker, whether or not you smoke tobacco.
1. Pick a good date to quit smoking.
2. Get the support of your family, friends and co-workers.
3. Be prepared for withdrawal symptoms and be sure you know the different ways to combat them.
4. Find something to replace your smoking habit like having a new routine at work or go into sports or anything that won-t make you think of smoking.

Whats the ideal aerobic workout for someone that just quit smoking? -

Whats the ideal aerobic workout for someone that just quit smoking? -

I just quit smoking, best life decision Ive ever made. Im so excited about quitting and I really want to start working out more, not necessarily weight training, just aerobics for now to get adjusted to being physical again. Im not completely out of shape, well maybe a bit. 5-9-, 187lbs, 23 years old, male. Anyway I went for a walk last night, which turned into a jog, which turned into a coughing fit, and that was after a 1/4 mile of jogging. Also, my chest felt real tight which was kinda scary. I know I have to take it easy, but Im just trying to figure out what would be a good and safe aerobic regimen for a exsmoker.
I went through the same thing last year, I quit smoking because I wanted to train for a marathon (I later learned that baby steps are ideal!) The best way is to start small. If you-re interested in running (the best workout by far -- cheap and easy) try going to halhigdon.com. He has a variety of training programs for beginners. These will get you in shape even if you aren-t planning on running a race. I liked running because it really works your lungs and heart. If you keep up with it, you see results in a relatively short period of time. Plus, getting fresh air makes cigarette smoke seem so confining and disgusting!

I also liked pilates, kickboxing, and strenght training. These kinds of workouts focus a lot on building inner strength as well, which it takes a lot of to quit smoking. It helps to set a goal for yourself, too.

Needless to say, try to incorporate some fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet, if you don-t already. For me, the more fresh foods and fresh water (lots of it) I put in my body, the less I wanted to feel that heavy, cloudy tar. I can-t stress the water thing enough, because besides the fact that your new workout routine requires it, it-ll give you something else to do with your hands besides smoke.

One last tip -- go to sparkpeople.com. The have so much information on living a healthy lifestyle, workouts, and diets, and you tailor it specifically to your needs. There-s even an option if you-re quitting smoking. Best of all, it-s completely FREE!

Hopefully through all of my rambling you found something that-s of use to you!
See your doctor, he/she can reccomend a safe exercise program and gradually build your stamina up again. Also if the doctor says its ok, go to the local pool and use the steam room, and maybe take a swim. The steam room is a good way to detoxify your body after having chemicals from smoking in you. Swimming is also a great workout. Good Luck! And congrats on the quitting!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! for the good decision...

For now you-ll be good walking no to slow though.
And start a good diet, healthier, you know fruits, vegies, cereal, meat, nuts, beans, etc.
So your body will b getting prepare to do more exercise

im desporate to quit but i keep failing and i am so mad at myself!
HELP anyone!
In the Search for questions slot type in -quit smoking- and you will get at least 7,100 results.
hey, dont get mad at yourself. its natural to fail a lot before you succeed. at least you-ve found a number of ways not do in quitting smoking. anyway, change your habits and try to do some exercise.
I FINALLY quit smoking! I started smoking in 8th grade and I kept on till just recently and I-m now 24yrs old. What helped me was smoking really, really gross cheap smokes! Get the ones that look like little cigars and smoke those, they will make you quit fast I promise, that is why I quit! Good luck!
I tried quitting for 25 yrs before I finally did. The reason I quit was because I had chronic bronchitis which had stopped responding to medication. One day I decided I wanted to be healthy (I was pretty sick) more than I wanted to smoke. I quit cold turkey in 1989 - haven-t had a cigarette since.
keep trying it is very hard you will fail a few times but you will eventually succeed if you can make it a week or two without smoking you have it licked but you will still get the urge to smoke for quite a while actually I still get them and I havent smoked in 2 years I am pretty sure it-s like alcoholism once addicted always addicted but that doesn-t mean you can-t quit it just takes persistance and will power
The time that I quit for 4 yrs (yes, I-ve started again since like a dumba**), I chewed gum, and it helped tremendously. Just any kind of gum, it will help keep your mind off it, and keep your mouth busy, and fresh. That-s what helped me the most. Also, take deep breaths, and just notice how good it feels to actually breathe fresh air. Yoga might also help.
Hi,

If you realy wants to quit smoking then you should know some facts.

This is for your information pl. that Cigarette smoking kills nearly about 420,000 people a year, making it more lethal than AIDS, accidents, homicides, suicides, drug overdoses, and fire.

The main risks of smoking are

1. Heart disease
2. Cancer
3. Dementia and neurologic diseases
4. Lung disease
5. Female infertility and pregnancy
6. Male sexuality and reproduction
7. Behavioural and Social Problems
8. Effects on bones and joints

The methods to quit smoking are

At this time the most effective methods for quitting is a combination of nicotine replacement products and the antidepressant drug bupropion bolstered by counselling.

1. Nicotine replacement

Nicotine replacement products provide low doses of nicotine that do not contain the contaminants found in smoke. They are proving to be twice as helpful as other standard quitting methods. Replacement products include nicotine patches, gums, nasal sprays, and inhalers. Side effects of any nicotine replacement product may include headaches, nausea, and other gastrointestinal problems. People often experience sleeplessness in the first few days, particularly with the patch, but the insomnia usually passes. Patients using very high doses are more likely to experience symptoms, and reducing the dose can prevent them. Certain individuals like people with heart disease, pregnant women, small children may need to avoid nicotine replacement products.

Nicotine patches: Nicotine patches, or transdermal nicotine, can be an effective way to quit smoking. The quit rate for patch users is around 20% after six months. Nicotine patches are available over the counter, but it is best to consult a doctor before using them, particularly people with any medical problems.

Nicotine gum: Nicotine gum (Nicorette), available over the counter, has also been effective for a number of people. Some prefer it to the patch because they can control the nicotine dosage and chewing satisfies the oral urge. Long-term dependence may be a problem with this method.

Nicotine inhaler: The nicotine inhaler resembles a plastic cigarette holder. It comes with a number of nicotine cartridges which are inserted into the inhaler. It has some specific advantages over other slower nicotine replacement products:

Nicotine nasal spray: The nasal spray satisfies immediate cravings by providing doses of nicotine rapidly, and thus may play a useful role in conjunction with slower acting nicotine replacement therapies.

Nicotine tablet: A nicotine tablet that is held under the tongue is also very useful.

2. Alternative and ther Methods for Quitting

Scheduled reduction: One study showed that people who used a systematic withdrawal schedule were twice as likely to quit as those who went cold turkey. The procedure involves the following steps:

Divide the number of minutes per day awake by the number of daily cigarettes; the result is the minute-long wait between smokes.

Set up a schedule with time intervals based on this result and using a timer, smoke only at those intervals; if the -cigarette appointment- is missed by more than five minutes, the smoker must skip that cigarette.

The following week, one-third fewer cigarettes are used and the smoking time is recalculated based on the lower number.

During the third week the count is again reduced by a third, and the smoker quits in the fourth week.
Change daily habits:

Change the daily schedule as much as possible. Eat at different times or eat many small meals instead of three large ones, sit in a different chair, rearrange the furniture.

Find other ways to close a meal. Play a tape or CD, eat a piece of fruit, get up and make a phone call, or take a walk (a good distraction that burns calories as well).

Substitute oral habits (eat celery, chew sugarless gum, suck on a cinnamon stick.) Go to public places and restaurants where smoking is prohibited or restricted.

Set short-term quitting goals and reward yourself when they are met, or every day put the money normally spent on cigarettes in a jar and buy something pleasurable at the end of a predetermined period of time.

Find activities that focus the hands and mind but are not taxing or fattening: computer games, solitaire, knitting, sewing, whittling, crossword puzzles.

Avoid heavy drinking of alcohol, caffeine, or other stimulants or mood altering substances.

i am trying to quit too, it sucks. i like the niccorette fruit chill gum, it helps a lot. my mom tried chantix and it worked great for her, she quit in less than a month after smoking for almost 30 years. i wish you the best of luck and don-t kick yourself for slipping up, it is very hard to quit. just keep with it and you will do it eventually.
First off, you are NOT weak. But if you keep telling yourself that, you-re bound to believe it.
Drink water... even better from a bottle. Your body needs help detoxing, and your mind wants hand to mouth.
Remember that cravings only last 2 minutes tops, and they get easier and less day by day. Breathe through those 2 minutes and you-ve waged war against a difficult battle that you can and will win!
Lastly, I-m going to give you a site that I used every flippin day when I quit. (its free too which is a huge bonus!). Whenever I thought I-d cave to crave, I-d log in to get back to my senses. It gives advice, tips and support... all day and all night. Use it.

You can do this.... believe it.
Just see a picture of damage lungs by cigarrette....i-m pretty sure you will quit smoking definitely.
Do it for your health!!! No body gonna take care of you better than yourself.

I want to quit smoking? -

I want to quit for me. However, my husband smokes and I dont want to expect him to quit. I also find it hard because I can-t stay away from smokers, and I love to drink and smoke together, I cant very well stay away from drinking on the weekends either. I need that to wind down on the weekends, My husband is in Iraq and things are Very stressful right now, I picked a bad time to quit, but its a top priority for me right now. Please any advice would be great. I have tried cold turkey and as soon as I eat or go walking, or go kart riding, anything i do on a normal day, I want one so bad, and my friends and family are no help cause they give into my begging. Please help me out here.
I tried going cold turkey, but I also got no help from friends or family. What I did was go to the supermarket and buy a bunch of celery. Every time I wanted a cig i just ate a stick of celery (0 fat, calories and carbs). I went through alot of celery but it was worth it. Drinking and smoking go hand and hand but I brought gum to the bars. When I wanted to smoke I chewed gum (alot by the way). It was hard but by day 5 it gets easier. Its hard to stop, but I think you can do it, you will feel better I promise you. I will pray for you husband, and all the soldiers, to return as soon as possible. When he comes home thank him for his service to our country.
My sister in law, quit cold turkey. She put her cigarettes in the top shelf of her cupboard, so that she would have to climb to get them. She quit that way. Unfortunately, she didn-t quit soon enough, she died of a heart attack, several years later. Sit down with a calculator, and figure out how much you will save per month by not smoking, then figure out how much longer you will live, when you quit smoking. I never smoked, but my siblings did. I now have outlived all of my siblings.
Here are a couple of websites to check out.

I did not quit smoking on my quit date while taking chantix, do I still have a good chance of quitting? -

I am on my second week of chantix and yesterday was my quit date and I did not quit but i have cut down a lot. Is there anyone that is or has taking this drug have any advice?
I quit about 5 days after my quit date. I-ve been 9 months now without a cigarette. Don-t give up on it.
Just keep at it. There are special instructions on their web site for people who don-t quit right away. You may have to double the length of time you-re on it from 3 to 6 months.

How did you quit smoking? -

I would like to try to quit and would like to know what has worked for everyone else. What did you do and how long has it been since you quit?
willpower

smoked for over 30 years , tried many times to stop

but the only way you can stop is if you - really - want to

none of those gums or patches will wok unless its what you - really - want to do

been off them now for 18 months

hope you make it

all the best
Ian
I used an old method of spacing the time between cigarettes.
The first day I smoked one every hour.
The next day one every two hours
then three hours
then one in the morning, one after lunch and one after dinner
then the last day, one in the morning and I quit.

I had to crumple up the remaining cigarettes and throw them away for the closure part of it.

I quit in December 1977 - 29 years ago.
I quit 20 years ago and I kept ice cold water near at all times and everytime I craved a cig I drank it. it worked and I did not gain weight. it-ll be tough but you can do it I was a smoker (pack A day) for 19 years GOOD LUCK.
my friend quit smoking (she drink a lot of water and eats a lot of candies sometimes the nicotine candy)
Cold turkey. I smoked since I was 15 and tried to quit so many times using pills, patches, gum and acupuncture. Woke up one day coughing up a lung (I am only 31) and just thought how pathetic am I?

It was hard, but mind over matter. Cold turkey is the only way I could do it. Good luck!
Go and stay with non smokers, not left with much choice then. Works for me every time.
I used the gum and at first it was very hard but after about a week I craved the gum instead lmao and then I began addicted to gum for a short while lol. I quit earlier this year.
A bad case of the flu along with my asthma and it-s been 7 years since I quit...

Probably won-t work for you?!?!
gum
There is no way to do it slowly like people say, but I quit!
when I found out I was pregnant, I was barely 2 wks pregnant, but I came out of the office, gave the cigarette pack to my brother-in-law and said -here, I won-t be needing these anymore- and that was it. I quit cold turkey. I felt like I needed them for about a week, but I just didn-t do it and that was in 1993. I now have a healthy 14 yr old! Good luck, I know some people have a hard time with it.
In 1970 at 18 I thought it was so adult to smoke. I quit very soon after 24, when I was sober, smelled the terrible smoke on my clothes, my hair, saw my dirty teeth. In short, I was disgusted with the whole thing. Oh yeah, along they way, mistaking you new beer for one that somebody used as an ashtray also was disgusting too.Its bee over 32 years. My kids being born had something to do with it too, not to mention the cost. Milk vs. cigarettes and beer? Hummm? Kids first. Never regretted quitting.
I got a punch on the stomach 20 years ago by my older brother, so I quit while he continues until now. He said, I don-t want you to be addicted to cigarette like me. Thanks bro.

try chewing gum, n they sell this patches to stop smoking, sum say it works.
Heart attack last Sept. 25. Doctor told me to find another doctor if I didn-t quit. So, I quit cold turkey.

A friend of mine saw a hypnotist that specializes in stop smoking, cost him $200, worked. He was a chain smoker.
I work in a doctor-s office and there is a new medicine called Chantix that alot of people have used and have been very successful with it. Good luck. That is a hard habit to break!!
chantix....3 or 4 months
Just keep telling yourself your going to quit I think its all in your head to smoke and them you get used to it
It has been 2 months since I quit smoking. For six months I worked at cutting down, I went from and pack a day slowly all the way down to one a day. It really makes you think about which cigarettes you like the most and which ones you are just smoking because your bored. I was stuck a 5 a day for a while and rally had to push my self to go lower, I found that limiting the amount of cigarettes in my pack kept me on track. Then finally when I was down to one, I just figured I would try and go a weekend without one, and kept adding days on till finally I realized I could stop and I haven-t had one since. I still have craving every now and again, but I feel great. Sucking on candy always helped with the cravings, the gum just made me feel sick. Also having a great support system helps. Good luck, you are making the right choice, and trust me it is not going to be easy, but you will be so happy you did.
I-ve been able to smoke for quite a while (since 14 I think) and I-ve never had the urge to smoke; only when someone else is with me. I consider a very valuable social skill and you should cut the habitual smoking but not go totally -free.- The only reason I smoked was to prove that addiction for ME doesn-t exist and I haven-t touched a cigarette for half a year until now where everyone-s off winter break and old friends gather together to have a puff. Smoking alone is not cool and the biggest indication of addiction. All you have to remember is what it does to you. It makes me unable to hump a mile without stopping and make my d*ck limp and all I had to do was look at the effect it had on my body and I would stop.
I just felt like quitting one day....You know when you-re eating thanksgiving dinner, - you eat so much you-re just full - done? That-s how I felt, just...Done. I knew the cravings would come back so I got the patch. I went home - eventhough I didn-t want to smoke, I had seven left in a pack, - I smoked six of them back to back (just saved the last one for some reason...I still have it..never smoked, I just felt I needed to keep it) After smoking those six, I waited a few hours - put the patch on, - did everything I could to forget about it. I started working out like crazy, - doing a lot of running - bike riding. Good luck, - I hope this helps you. Any questions, just email me, it-ll be the best feeling in the world when you do quit!
Hi - congrats on the effort!

I quit in early summer. What helped:

- My boyfriend quitting just before me, so no comfy cigs at home - had to go outside.

- My city changed the smoking laws at the same time - energy and impetus in the air; again, no comfy indoor smokes.

- A combination of the patch and the gum. I-d tried the patch once, half-heartedly. Still wasn-t committed to quitting at that time, and had/have an oral thing going on... The second time around, and on the advice of a smoking cessation programme, I supplemented the patch with 2 mg gum. I chewed it ALL THE TIME. Was on the patch 5 weeks, on the gum for months. I-ve since moved to regular chewing gum, and still use WAY too much of that, but I-m not smoking!!!

- I joined a gym at the same time, to do something to control cravings. It helps.

- Working on perceptions helped bigtime. Connecting smoking with negative things, and not smoking with desirable things.

For me, smoking started LOOKING like something boring, uneducated, classless people did. (I kept a mental note of how many big brother contestants smoked, as was in uk at the time; make your own comparison if it helps.)

Smoking is a way to try to look sophisticated/older when you-re 13 - my age when I started - it-s really sad if there-s no better way to be adult once you can vote.

I tried to connect not smoking to the -me- that existed before I tried so hard to confound my life in various ways. Pink lungs = bright and shiny person. It meant change, optimism in broader ways.

Alan Carr-s book helped in that regard, even if it is loaded with logical flaws, etc. One line of thought there was this - when you-re born, your body is what it is, a whole. Smoking, though, introduces a new, perverse need, which when filled, is toxic. I wanted to return to my perfect self.

- Vanity. Smoking is really bad for your skin. Pushes wrinkles ahead of schedule, makes your skin and teeth yellow, slows healing so you-re left with scars.

Hope this helps, good luck!!!
well..you could try reducing the number of cigarettes bit by bit or chew bubblegums!
got drunk felt terrible the next day and it helped me quit...
Never started. Filthy.

Im 28. and have been smoking weed for 15 years many times a day. I quit a week ago because it kills my motavation. I allways use to get high and jerk off befor bed. Now when i do it it seems soft and dosent squirt like it use to. What should I do? I was thinking of smoking again to see if that might fix it.
lol, its because weed makes it like 3x better and no sober people will ever know it, dont be a b*tch and blame weed for u being lazy, get off ur *** and enjoy the high

peace, smoke up
sorry dude but once it-s gone...it-s gone
Weed can increase erections
Also it makes men and women horny

ur so used to it psychologically that you cant get it up as good

its all in your head mainly

or possibly you have ED and the weed used to fix it and now you stopped taking it
Just wait it out man...This may be because cannabis affects the same part of your brain as viagra does. So if you take viagra and cannabis together they will counteract. This may be on the lines of what is going on with you my man, that when it is takin away that stimulant in your reporductive system is affected.
Youve had it in your system for a long time so your body and mind are going through a lot of changes, its probably more of a psychological thing, less vivid fantasies etc. The best thing to do is to get fit. Plenty of jogging and cardiovascular activity will improve your blood circulation which will lead to harder, longer erecetions. One week is still no time to be off weed, it takes over a month to leave your system totally so in a months time if the problem is still there and bothering you, go see a doc
Sounds like a very sad situation, I would go to see a urologist immediately. When doing so, please be completely honest as to all of the specifics of your long-term marijuana use. In all honesty, I don-t think you becoming a pothead again is going to -do the trick-.
ummm.... no
smoking isnt the best idea, thats horrible for you and i give you props for quitting

your body isnt used to the change, but it should regulate eventually

=D

Whats the best way to quit smoking? -

My fiance and i smoke but he does more than i do. I know that i could quit if i wasn-t around someone who smoked (i only smoke 1-3 cigarettes a day) and lately he-s cut back to around 6 a day, but we don-t have much money right now and i was wondering if there are any habits or anything out there that doesn-t cost much that could help him quit completely? I-ve heard chewing gum helps, anything else? He hasn-t tried any patches or gum, but any advice on what works the best?
Cold turkey!! It worked for me. It isn-t the most comfortable, but it is the cheapest and most effective. You just have to fight the urge to smoke. Oh, chew a lot of gum. I found that the Orbit gum in the light blue pack was my fav when I quit smoking. I would buy the whole box right off the shelf at the check out. Good luck!!! You can do it.
When ever he goes to smoke tell him -Don-t Do That!- And call hmi throughout the day and first thing you say is Don- Do That, it actually works well. If you make your mind up and tell yourself to not do it, the cravings go away.
i smoked around 6-8 a day and quit for new years. the best way really is just pure willpower. just going cold turkey and waiting out the first two or three days. it really works.
Have him calculate how much money he spent on cigarettes, and how much more he will spend if he keeps it up, after he gets done crapping his pants he-ll hopefully realize how stupid it is.

Has anyone else quit smoking years ago but still craves cigarettes (nicotine!) all the time? -

Has anyone else quit smoking years ago but still craves cigarettes (nicotine!) all the time? -

I sometimes still crave a cigarette, even though I quit a few years ago... anyone else? why are cigarettes so freakin- good?
I quit like 2 years ago from ciggs ! And everytime i-m stressed or sick all i want is a freakin ciggarette !
i-ve never smoked, but i have a cousin who-s quit, and she says she craves sometimes. its because you-re brain is so used to the nicotine, that it feels it constantly need more. i bet it also depends how long you smoked and how much nicotine you had in your system every day. you can try patches instead of cigarettes, though.
I know what you mean. I smoked for twenty years and in the beginning I loved it but then it became just habit and my clothes and car stunk. I quit 6 years ago and I feel great. Hey, it does get easier every day that you don-t smoke it gets better. I still like the smell of a cigerette but luckily and hopefully I never smoke again. But I do know where you are coming from MJ. Don-t do it.
I started smoking when i was 13 now im 22. i quit for the second time in my life a month ago. i dont have that much cravings at all the last time i quit was 3 years ago for seven days i didnt smoke and i gained 10 lbs!

this time its different i dont know why but im really not having any cravings ever im just sick of cigs i think there nasty!
chew gum
