How did you quit smoking? -

I have decided to quit smoking! I am 28 years old and have smoked since about 17 years old. I notice I am winded and it is starting to affect me. I am overweight 232lbs 5-8-- and plan on doing the p90x workout, I mention that because I know exercise is essential. My questions are for people that have quit smoking, how did you do it?? Especially people that drink beer! Tell me!
I-m on day 9 right now. I have quit a couple times before and alcohol broke my quit everytime. So I have given up alcohol and I no longer hang out with my alcohol and smoking friends in the evening. I started working out too. I joined 24 hour fitness and started walking and jogging in the morning. You will have to figure out your triggers----alcohol is mine. Good Luck to you!
i smoked for 20 years and when i decided i wanted to have kids i quit cold turkey. i still drink a beer from time to time, but it does not taste good without a smoke- sorry, but its true.
the best way to quit is to decide that you are done. my hubby took forever to quit, he tried everything, but when i got pregnant i told him i would not allow him near me or the baby if he was smoking and that did it.
it takes less than a week to get the nicotine out of your system, but the habit is very hard to break. you need to change your lifestyle. getting in shape is a good step, you can eliminate the things you smoked while doing- sitting around, drinking etc.
it really doesn-t take long if you focus on why you are doing it, think about how you are going to save the rest of your life, and the occasional nic fit will be inconsequential.
I still drink wine without smoking anything. I have been smoke free for over a decade -one of the best things I-ve ever did for saving my health.

I was a very light smoker for starters. While my friends were smoking a pack a day, I smoked like 2-3 smokes, and then I hated the way I smelled after wards. Its a disgusting habit and it doesn-t make someone look cool at all, it makes that person look like a Bum. Turns your teeth and fingers yellow. It makes you cough up mucus. It can cause birth defects in pregnant females, and erectile dysfunction in males.not to mention how much it costs, its a very nasty habit.

Try enjoying your nice meal around a dirty ashtray, that should be enough to stop the urges- just keep thinking about that nasty ashtray..

Some helpers: Get strong cough drops like Halls and take one every time you want to smoke.
the good news is that i now have been quit for over 5 years.. i quit trying to quit alone, and joined a support group.. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally and on line.. on line voice meetings are he as close as your computer, and you can attend while still smoking, before actually attempting a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck, there is simply no wrong way to quit!!

Who has tried Chantix to help quit smoking?,how does this drug make you feel? -

I-ve tried chantix, it did help me with the cravings. As far as side effects it gave me dry mouth, diarrhea and I had some weird dreams.
I tried it a few months ago. It made me sick to my stomach, but it helped me quit smoking fast. Although I also quit taking it, and was good for about a month and am now back to smoking again though. But I do remember the first few days of it making me feel very pukey, did the same to my husband to. I-d say that-s a normal side effect of it though.

I have gained 60 pounds since I returned from working for a year in Iraq. I also quit smoking, is this normal? -

I have wondered if my weight gain is due to a medical condition.
Most people gain weight when they quit smoking because every time they get an urge for a smoke they take a bite of food instead. Normal.
smoking increases your metabolism so you need to exercise to build muscle so your metabolism will get higher... that-s my theory anyway
Have you went back to work yet? That might have alot to do with it not being as active. Is the climate hot where your at like overseas-you might not sweat as much at home either. I have the same problem-but mine is lack of having a job in a while. Good luck.
Sure, you are probably doing less physical activity then you were in iraq. And you are probably eating differently, even just a little bit. And quiting smoking, CAN make you gain weight! You might have just gained a little more then you thought you were going to!
Well, if you think it could be a medical condition you should see a doctor. However, my guess is that you simply got used to those huge Army meals and kept eating that much even after you stopped being so active. If that is the case, you need to start exercising and/or reduce the amount you eat. Good luck!
Yes, as some weight gain can be expected as you quit smoking.
congratulations on stopping smoking i quit 4 years ago and was warned by doctors my appetite would increase and it did. this is cos smoking sepresses the appetite just try to eat somewhat healthy it should pass over a couple of months
A lot of people put on weight when they quit smoking. Also, I know when I returned from Iraq that my -normal- job is more sedentary than my job was there, in a much different environment. If you are doing less and eating the same, you will put on weight.

Can quit smoking trigger myathenia gravis? -

Since a couple of months I have been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. I have quit smoking, as a chain smoker 2 packs a day, last July 2005, so I question myself now if to quit smoking could have triggered that chronic illness which I have to carry till the end of my life. May going back to smoke recess the myasthenia?
Smoking doesn-t cause MG...but it can aggravate it (putting stress on the body) for someone who already has it. And, since quitting smoking is also stressful, it can trigger symptoms.

Any stress can trigger symptoms.
\If you hadn-t quit smoking, whatever else happened next in your life that caused stress would have done it. At least now, you-re not fighting MG while filling your lungs with smoke rather than oxygen. Congrats on quitting!

Honestly, i quit a few years ago and it sure as hell wasn-t easy but what worked best for me was the patch. Also I am a firm believer that if you really want to quit it has to be you that wants to quit and not someone else pushing you. you have to find what you dont like about it and keep thinking about that whenever the urge to smoke comes. Finally, you should do everything you usually do when you have a cigarette and force yourself not to have one. For example, eat a meal and don-t smoke afterward, have a cup of coffee without smoking, or the hardest one, have a beer and dont smoke. although if you can hold off on the alcohol as long as possible i think that would be the best. Eventually I lost the urge to smoke and when i picked up a cigarette a while later i was grossed out by it and thankfully havent smoked since. Hope some of this helps and if you have any question dont hesitate to ask.
I smoked so bad that I had to have a butt before coffee just to get up to make the coffee. I smoked three packs a day when I didn-t to out more if I did. To stop I washed my bathroom with a tooth brush chewed the salt off the pretzels and prayed like crazy also walked till my feet almost fell off and ate half a pound of chocolate every night till finally one day I found I had stopped. This was before the nicotine patches and it has been 20 years. Good lucky you can do it and you will NEVER regret it. I certainly don-t and would rather chew off my right hand then ever go back to smoking. I-ll say a prayer for you

do it cold turkey. Right Now!
stop and say to yourself that this is it.
with time you will loose the urge to smoke. it may not be easy, but you will get there. just look forward to the future when you wont have that urge anymore. everyone looses the urge with time. and so will you. plus, it-s good for you and your family.
you-ll need something to counter weigh this endeavor so start exercising. this too will be hard after smoking, but time is on your side.
This may sound odd but it-s worked for me - just go to a strange city you-ve never been to before. Get a plane ticket to Seattle or Chicago or Atlanta or wherever is close enough to be affordable, and two nights in a hotel. As long as you don-t bring cigarettes with you, the disruption of your regular routine and disorientation at being in a strange place should make it easy not to smoke. The most difficult part of this method is staying smoke free when you get back home. It-s a lot easier not to smoke after 48 hours or longer of already not smoking, though.
Well I knew someone who went on Chantix and they quit. Along with the treatment, there is a website that supports you and really encourages you. You go on it like once a day or something and it gives you encouragement. It-s really cool and I think that-s the best idea.

I am really proud of you for stepping up and making a great choice! Congratulations!

What were somethings that you had to overcome after you quit smoking? -

I quit smoking about 5 months ago... (I am so proud of myself) I feel so much healthier and a whole lot better about myself! :) It feels so weird to not get that --break- to get away from something. To deal with things! Sometimes, I get so moody.... :( I know I have to stay positive! Lol... Quiting feels so good! So would you please tell me your story! How did you learn to calm yourself? If you put on some weight did you lose it after sometime? Do you feel more alive? How has your life changed since you quit? :)
I quit smoking when I was 27. I was smoking 3 packs a day and I drank coffee by the pot. I was eating Oreos and ice cream, and otherwise snacking quite a bit through the day because the cigs tasted better after I ate,, sooooo.. I was gaining a bit of weight before I quit. I gained no weight when I quit smoking, I lost... I also had a headache everyday of my life and had gone to eye drs, chiropractors, etc.. trying to cure them.. after a few months of no smoking I realized I had no more headaches...

So one night I was getting ready to go to sleep and I heard a wheezing sound coming from my mouth.. I said no way, and put my 1/2 empty pack of cigs in my pocket the next morning so that I wouldn-t go through the crazy looking for cig buts or bumming from somebody else etc... Then I never smoked again. I did like it for the first few months when a person came around and was smoking, I could breathe their smoke and feel so good... But soon the smoke was not pleasing anymore, 6 months, a year and a half.. I don-t remember exactly. Then the smoke irritated me..

I was very busy with my retail store so I was never bored and wandering what to do with my time so I think that helped. I also quit coffee as I said, they went together and I figured it would be easier to quit smoking without the coffee. I still don-t drink coffee to this day.. 20 years later... I dreamed off and on for about 7 years that I was smoking again, I would tell myself that I was so stupid and -why did you start again after so long- I would be really upset with my self when I woke up, sometimes I couldn-t tell if it was real or a dream after a awoke. I think that I was really ready to quit and it made it very easy for me. I think that you just have to keep your mind set to the fact that you are no longer a smoker and just never take that 1st one again...

I always thought I would kill everybody around me when I quit smoking, I had a lot of stress with my business, and a wife that was a hypochondriac and a liar, I thought that I need to smoke so that I would not blow up and yell and scream, beat on people or something... But the only real problem I had was wanting to sleep all the time, I think from quitting the coffee. I got over that in a few weeks though. I didn-t kill, beat or even yell too much.... The best thing is that now at almost 50 years old I feel better and stronger than I did when I was 27. I would drive my van in to Vegas a hundred miles and when I got out I would walk across the parking lot like an old man.. Now I jump out and do two double back flips and... oh well I do jump out and walk upright...
I-m hanging on but only quit a couple months ago and my
chantix is all used up. my biggest problem is lack of will
power. i breathe much better and actually feel human ago
after 40+ years of acting like a chimney. Moody ? and how,
times i wonder if-n i can keep it up -- that-s when i concentrate
on how much better i feel and smell. did put on a litlle weight
but have started wlking in the evenings and that holds it
in check

How long does it take for cravings to go away after you quit smoking? -

How long does it take for cravings to go away after you quit smoking? -

I just quit last night and with a combination of my medications and cravings, I-m going crazy. It-s been 13.5 hours so far.
The physical withdrawal should take 3 days to kick, give or take. (some people say a week) But the psychological addiction can often take much longer. they say it takes about a month to form a habit, and a month to break one! :)

hope this helps
Nicotine starts to leave your body as soon as you put out that last cigarette, after 48 hours all the nicotine will have left your body, but your cravings will remain for as long as you-re an addict.

Cravings are mental, consider it like this - when did you ever wake up in the night because of nicotine cravings? Yes there are cravings when it comes to nicotine, but they are very slight and it-s more about the mental need for a cigarette than a chemical or physical need...as such it-s *impossible* to say when the cravings will go away. I-ve known people who have quit using willpower or NRT methods who have still had cravings years, even decades after stopping - thus why willpower and NRT have such low sucess rates, they may cut the drug out of your system (NRT obviously cut down nicotine before cutting it out compleatly...so is just a slower way of going cold-turkey), but they don-t deal with the addiction itself.

Seriously hun, do yourself a favour and use Easyway to quit smoking, then you-ll have no cravings, you won-t feel deprived of your cigarettes, and thus why Easyway methods have a 90% sucess rate, not just stopping smoking but staying a happy non-smoker...there-s really no need to suffer from cravings or withdrawl, certainly it doesn-t have to be hard to quit so don-t make it harder on yourself by using a method that makes you feel the way you feel now. Go see the Easyway web site
http://allencarr.com
or a few $-s will get you the book, with all the same sort of information you-d get from an Easyway clinic, for such a small amount of money at least give it a try -

HI Nikki..

first of all congrats on at those 13.5 hours.. a great beginning, and as your finding, an eternity to a new quitter..all i can say is don-t pickup, quitting is so worth it!!... of course the severity of the cravings depend on a lot of things, like how long you smoked, how much etc..

the good news is that they do go away.. also there are coping mechanisms, a number of us use the 4 D-s... 1 distract, that is so something else, (cant smoke with hands in dishwater)....2 discuss (many of have friends or quit buddy-s we can call).. 3 drink water, this simple act flushes the system, and temporarily relieves cravings.. 4 deep breathe (smokers often developed the habit of shallow breathing except when inhaling smoke)...

myself i have found that participation in a support group helped me quit ( i have been quit for over 5 years now after 40+ years smoking).. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally and online.. you are welcome there

After I quit cold turkey I would dream I was smoking for over a year. In order to quit I had to just tough it out. I took more potassium since your body dumps it when you quit smoking. Then when I got the urge to smoke I would go out and do some exercise. Also now a days they have Lobelia herb that helps people quit easier.
It is an herb. You can get it at any health food store.
But mostly I had dreams for at least a year after I was done with the smoking. That was over 40 yrs ago.

Chin up you can do it. Take one day at a time.

i really want to stop smoking i thought i could quit cold turkey but it is harder then i thought it would be i get really irritable any suggestions or experiences that worked for someone?
I tried all of the patches, the gums, etc. And all I ended up with was an addiction to the patch and gum. I finally ended up quitting cold turkey. (6 years long now, thank you very much!) You will get over the irritable thing. It takes a couple of weeks. So try not to plan any family reunions or first dates until it passes. I found it best to busy myself with other things....I planned a day trip to a local lake, went shopping...ALOT!...went to the movies, etc. I basically went places that I would not normally smoke. Then came home and went straight to bed...no matter the hour. You need to give it some time to get the nicotine out of your system.

Buy some bubble gum!! Everytime you get the urge, crack that stuff as loud as you can!!

Good luck!! I-m sure you can hang in there.
Cold turkey works. Just bear with it. Get some hard candy to keep on hand to help with the urges. I have tried patches, gum, etc to quit and the only time I was able to quit was to simply throw them away and stay out of bars for a couple months.
smoke one sig, less than usually, every day, -1 -2...
stitch your lips shut
chew on stuff, pencils or pens can work for that(dont get used ones!). find a hobby so you can concentrate on that hobby, get non smoking friends to help you out. One of my friends ended up quitting cold turkey.
I used a pill to stop smoking and it really helped me also, I felt better when I drank water from a mug through a straw, (helps with the hand to mouth thing )
Both of my parents smoke. One way my mom quit was she set a date. And it was the cold turkey. She stopped on that date and through many days of goofyness. she recovered it was very weird though. When people that are addicted to nocotine on-t hvae it in thir system they act like any other drug addict that has not been taking drugs
GOOD LUCK dont give up!! :]
See your doctor. There are several options to help you quit, including a pill (ex: Chantix). If you don-t want to see your doctor, try the gum. When you quit smoking, you will inadvertanly want to replace your oral fixation of cigarettes with something else, so the gum is good because it keeps your mouth and lips busy. If you want to do the patch, I suggest buying some lollipops too. Best of luck to you!
My wife quit cold turkey for about a week. Then she decided to try the patch and that worked for her. She would wear it during the day, take it off when she went to bed. And when she went to break at work she would go for a walk instead of sitting by her friends that smoke. We also stayed out of the bar for about two months.She-s been smoke free for ten months now.
I recently quit, had my last smoke back in January of this year after smoking for 20 years.

I used the Commit lozenges as directed. I must admit, They Worked!
I am now a proud non-smoker.
Give them a try at least.
Nicotine patch or gum. Or slowly reduce your cig intake on a daily basis by 1 or 2 cigs.
always have a coff drop in your moth
Make a $100 bet with someone who doesnt think you can quit. If you loose then you weren-t meant to quit.
ya same here i been telling my self i want to quit for over a year now. wooT im not listioning to my self anymore,, im gonna try gum once i get paid $40 a box tho is insain. make sure you really want it.

smoking is bad and its diry dont let the white cigs and white boxes make you think its clean there is nothing more dirty! its gross and effects your health. every time you smoke a cig you make it harder to quit so you better quit now. and make sure you dont smoke again. if you buy smokes you have to throw away the hole pack after smoking one and then you need to buy a new pask if you want another one!
Stop buying the things, and then next time you want one, you won-t have one.
ask your doc about chantix. looks like it really works. i am doing the cold turkey thing myself. good luck and maybe i-ll be calling my doc too.
Put a rubberband around ur wrist and snap it whenever you feel u need a smoke. Also take the supplement L-Tyrosine, you can get it at gnc, it will help you adjust emotionally to quitting smoking
I went to a group called Pheonix In Lincoln, England, they helped me.
I quit using the gum, I had tried the pens and patches before and even went cold turkey a couple of times. but it was the gum that got me off!

I also had to write on a piece of paper why I wanted to stop, and I had to carry that around with me all the time, so if I ever craved one, I looked at it, and it reminded me why I wanted to stop. I have only just stopped carrying that piece of paper round with me 4 years after quitting. It said;

-Others have done it, you can do it, no-ne else is better than you! You-ll save, after, 1 year - £3,640. 3 years - £10,920. 5 years - £18,000-

I used to smoke 2 packs a day, £70 a week my habbit cost me! I was put the money to one side and after the first week buy yourself a treat, to the value of what you saved. I bought myself my favourite takeaway, and a pair of trainers. then I was told to wait for 2 weeks and buy something with the money, bought myself a dvd player and some dvd-s. then I was told to do it after 1 month of saving, booked myself a holiday with the £280 I had saved. then I was told to spend it after 3 months of saving, bought myself a motorbike! I was told that I had to save the money then make sure I spent it, it proved to be one of the clinching factors to me stopping. I had been stopped almost 5 months, I had bought tons of new stuff, I had stopped smelling like an ashtray, it was great!

also a craving only lasts for 5-10 minutes, so make sure you can be busy when a craving starts! preferably getting your hands dirty, as you-ll be less likely to smoke then.

there are places out there willing to help you quit, and my advice is to find one! I doubt i would of quit if it wasn-t for the help of Mary from the Pheonix group.

good luck, and never giver up trying

Someone who has been smoking for 7 years and wants to quit- and has access to fairly good health insurance- does anyone have experience getting health insurance to cover cost of medications, etc for quitting smoking? I know this depneds entirely on the plan- but I am curious about the procedure?
- did you have to get medication prescribed, etc
i have worked in the health industry for 25 years
almost all insurance companies will not cover meds to help you stop smoking..even if they are prescribed by a dr
they will offer you smoking cessation classes but that is about it
????????????????????????
Many insurance companies have smoking cessation programs, go to the website listed on the back of your insurance card.
The money YOU will save when you quit will easily pay for any treatment process you choose! Until YOU accept responsibility for your health and habits, you will not likely change them.

Best wishes and good luck.

I am looking for a laser treatment center to quit smokimg in Madison Wi I cant find one please help
I am not from WI, but my sister did the laser treatment ,to quit smoking ,it really did not work, have you ever .Have you heard of a new treatment with pills ;called -Chantex- read about it ,

http://www.chantex.info/

You -ll get some Idea how it works , and it worked well with my sister, this is some behavior changing completely new and it is like a treatment, it takes about 2 to 3 weeks and slowly you drop the habit ,I have to tell you this , you need a doctor-s prescription and the cost is about $120 for 3 weeks supplements, you don-t need it more than 3 weeks ,if you are a hard core smoker you might get extended to 2 more weeks, . wish u best of luck.
I am not from Wi but let me tell you, don-t waste your money on laser it does not work. I was a smoker for over 36 years and tried any and everything to make me quit. I am now taking the new pill called chantix and so far it-s really working great, a little costly but not as much as smokes. Good luck to you, I-ll be rooting for you.
believe it or not call a chiropractor they seem to be the ones that offer it bout 100 dollars though
You can always try hypnotism...and I-m not trying to be an *** like the guy above me. If you look in the phone book of the nearest major city, you-ll be bound to find one or the other.

Both ideas are a little crazy, so it really doesn-t matter which one you go with.
I found this:

Meriter New Start - Center for Addiction
Quit Smoking Laser Treatment - LaserCare will help you stop smoking or lose ... Madison, WI. 53719. Website. www.meriter.com. Intake Phone Numbers

But I couldn-t find the actual laser treatment info on it. But, maybe if you call they can direct you to where you need to go.

Good luck!

Does smoking weed make you stupider? When is an appropriate age to quit smoking? -

Marijuana isn-t the worst of drugs but i worry if ill ever be able to quit, and if it is affecting my day to day life. If i currently do it one a week, is this terrible, 16 years old.
I smoked for 20yrs. Everyday. I ran a callcentre for a major company and smoked to relax after work. I smoked on weekends to get me busy to clean the house. I smoked Sunday arvo so I could enjoy the football. I play trivia nights 3 times a week, and usually win. My friends call me TP, for Trival Pursuit. I-m 35 now and last year I decided to quit. I did. 1 yr now pot free. Was it hard...for me no. I treated it recreationally and substitued it for the Gym. My memory is fine. I was lucky.
I have known alot of my past smoking buddies who have either commited suicide through depression, or are in - out of homes due to schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, that have been bought on by smoking pot. You need to know it is a lucky dip. You could be lucky like I have been....so far, or smart and not play russian roulette with your life. You just don-t know what it will do to you smoking all those chemicals that is in the hydro now days.
Please think hard about this life altering decision.
Smoking weed makes you a total idiot,
that-s why street gangs exist.Never
smoke weed at all.The worse thing
to do is smoke and drink alcohol.
That leads to violence,drug
(weed) selling and other retarded acts.
Stay away from them all if you
want to live and go to Heaven.
At 20 all sorts of smoking should b stopped.
and start yoga then
http://ad-wise.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_a…

Marijuana won-t make you stupid overnight, but it has been linked to weaker brain function, such as issues with memory and speed of thought. Here-s the Journal of the American Medical Association-s article:
http://jama.highwire.org/cgi/content/abs…

If it-s interfering with your everyday life, then it is time to quit. There-s no age cut-off, really, it-s a matter of knowing when it-s something you do occasionally and when it-s something you can-t function without.
You can always tell who-s on dope - after a while their reactions slow down, their speech slurs and they have a vacant look in their eyes.
16 is a good age to stop!
Umm, its not that it makes you MORE STUPID it does however effect your memory and concentration and attention span....i know trust me lol
I think there is no appropriate age to quit smoking. I think at any age smoking should stop. I think there is an age where it is not good at all to smoke, the age where you grow.

When you become an adult your body doesnt grow that much , it will try to settle with what it has. It is like going up the hill and after that is down the hill.

So when you go up the hill , you could look at smoking as a gravity pulling you (not growing well) , not making it up there, but when you are on the top smoking again acts like gravitiy and pulls you all the way down,( don-t function very well) which is death really.

However, it all depends on your genes, this is not to promote smoking, but just what i have seen, some people smoke while they are in their 80-s and they decide to quit then. So i think life wise its all in Gods hand when you leave or stay.

Saying so, smoking weed is a differnt issue, at least that makes you high unlike cigarettes, there is a point to do that.

Although studies say, it kills your brain cells and blocks the tissues from grasping any oxygen causing hillusination (i dont know how to spell it ) or causing things like cancer and all. I think there should be a limit to it.

I dont see it as a drug , if weed is a drug then cigarettes should be considered a drug as well. If you think about it, alot of medicines in the pharmacy , the one prescribed are drugs! therefore, i think drugs is good for you in a way if you have the right intention , like for your well being, not just to abuse it.

With weed, you do get more creative, you do experiment the -out of ordinary- situation , which will lead you to brighter ideas, because on a stable mind you would have not thought that, now i am basing all this on important people who effected our lives , such as shakespeare, Im not sure if einstein was part of it, but it did help alot of people see things that were not there. It opens the dream world so that you could see what you dream. But ofcourse it is how you use your weed really. I think as long as you have control or limit yourself you should be fine.

I know alot of people who disagree with me and say that i am only promoting, i dont smoke or anything, but i wouldnt mind trying it once, but since i know i am weak at controlling myself i dont do it, because i might ruin whatever roof is on top of my head.
But if you ask me that is how i see it. Look on important painters of our time or scientists , and see if they did use any.

If you think about it , if it was that bad they would not allow it in holland, but as u can see that country is free to do so.
I dont think it makes me stipider but it did make me important I caint perform anymore in bed with wife. But as far as I can tell its all in good fun . Well heres to you and your new habit I hope you have as much foortunes as I have had. YOur Fiend possom
Apparently.
Smoking weed as well as taking other drugs does make you stupider. You are young enough and you don-t smoke it enough you can quit easy. Quit now before you smoke it every day.
I started smoking weed when i was 16 and i quit when i was 18, i just turned 19 and its not hard to quit, well it wasnt for me. Sometimes i think that it made me not able to concentrate as well but it could just be me. if you look Marijuana up in an encyclopedia it says its a natural herb and it wont harm you. doing it once a week isnt terrible now if you did it every night that might be bad.

How did you manage to quit smoking? -

If you-ve successfully managed to gve up smoking, please share your experiences and helpful tips with this nicotine junkie.
I used Zyban (wellbutrin) for a couple months. It was invaluable in making quitting tolerable, since I had to work and I couldn-t be exploding on people when the cravings got really bad!

I-ve heard mixed reviews concerning Chantix, it-s the newest smoking-cessation treatment out there.

Regardless of what medicine you use or don-t use, you have to WANT to quit! I went to a seminar where they showed an actual charred lung from a cadaver who had smoked. To me, that was HUGELY motivational. It really creeped me out to think that my lungs looked like what comes between two buns at Burger King...

Good luck! It ain-t easy, but it-s worth it!
~~No cigarette is going to do to anything but harm to you.

There are patches, gums, and now a new product called Smoke Everywhere. These are safer than cigarettes because there are no added chemicals or tar in them. They allow you to cut down slowly and quit for good. If you cant go cold turkey these are excellent choices.

There are also many smoking cessation groups available. Look for one in your area. It helps finding others to help you through and understands the misery you are dealing with while quitting.

When you are ready to be healthy, you will do it. Best of luck!~~

Cold turkey. It-s cheap, easy, and inexpensive. My husband smoked 2 packs for 25 years and one day just decided to quit. He had NO problem. 9 months later I was ready to quit. You have to want to quit.
I did it cold turkey. Sure, I missed the habit for a couple weeks, so I chewed gum.
That was 20 years ago, and the urge really went away after 2 weeks. I see it every day. A woman finds out she-s pregnant, so she quits. Another person finds out he has heart or lung problems, so he quits right then and there.
It-s all willpower. Just throw them away (you better wet them first!) and be proud to say, -I don-t smoke.- You know it-s a disgusting, stinky,
expensive, and DANGEROUS stupid habit. Here-s a star to get to you started. Congratulations!!!! :)
I decided that I wasn-t going to be a slave to nicotine anymore and put them down; never picked them back up and I smoked for 7 years. No gum, no patch, just quit.

Whats the best way to quit smoking? -

i want to ASAP!
I have smoked for 31 years.....I just quit 2 months ago.....just stopped....it really does work...I take a drink of water every time I think about a cig....it works....I am so over smoking....good luck
Chantix was the only thing that actually worked for me... Smoke free since January.
Prayer. Pray for help. Get your friends and relatives to pray for you. Get your church to pray for you (prayer list). Ask strangers that you have started up conversations with to pray for you.

The nicotine addiction is the small and easy part to fight. It is the compulsion to smoke that is the hardest to resist. So the gum and the patch never helped me to stop.

Prayer worked for me. I don-t know which person it was, but one of them said a prayer for me to help me quit smoking, and one day, the desire to smoke just went away. It went away for three days, and that was long enough to get me on the wagon, I just needed to keep praying and remain vigilant after that in order to stay quit. I had been smoking for 14 years.

I haven-t smoked for 3 years now.

Good luck to you.

Why is it harder to lose weight after quit smoking? -

Why is it harder to lose weight after quit smoking? -

I quit smoking last april and have gained about ten pounds since then. I wasnt heavy to begin with but I dont want my weight to creep up on me. I used to be able to lose 10 pounds easy now it seems harder. Any ideas why?
the simple answer:

You can now taste the food. As such, you tend to enjoy it more hence eating more.

As well, psychologically you need to do something with your hands and we tend to eat something small that we can hold in our fingers (so once again eating more).

Exerercise more. When you would take a smoke break before spend this time on a brisk walk instead. This will burn off the calories of the extra food you are taking in due to quitting smoking.

Congrats on quitting. If I could only join you in your amazing feat :)
once you get rid of one habbit you go on to another one like eating constantly non-stop especially crunchy stuff
Before when you were hungry you may have simply gone out and had a cigarette (unbenknownst to you) which would stave off hunger for awhile where as now, you have no way of sating that oral fixation in any way except eating. most people don-t know how to separate their cravings into what they really are like the need for water, food or drugs. try drinking a ton of water when you feel like eating...or chew a peice of gum. it may work, it may not.
Several reasons, A nicotine is a stimulant, so it speeds up your metabolism, B) it-s an appetite suppresent, it tricks your body into thinking its fuller than it is. C) It ruins your tastebuds, so food is blander and less appealing and D) the extra time and desire to be satisfied from smoking has to go to something so food generally ends up taking its place.
well i know smoking reduces your appetite so maybe you were eating less and therefore kinda putting urself on a diet without even knowing it. So i would say your prob just eating more,
putting things into your mouth is a habit formed by bringing a cigarette to your lips constantly

How can I get my dad to quit smoking? -

How can I get my dad to quit smoking? -

My dad has been smoking since he was a teen, and he always says that he want to quit. He always tells me that he is going to quit, but then the next day, he buys a carton of cigerattes from costco. And each time I tell him to stop he gets angry and stuff. so yeah help?
Quitting is hard...I too have been smoking since I was 12...I have tried to quit several times...I actually quit for 3 months once..but without the right program and alot of stress in life..it-s virtually impossible.
You may suggest to him to try those nicotine patches for a couple weeks...but the key to those is keeping busy..if he gets idle then the chances are he-ll light up.
To keep him busy and to get you 2 to spend quality time..sign up for a fitness program with a trainer...not only will he keep busy but he will get healthier...
Look at me...trying to give advise.
Take some of his cigs and you start or just walk out every time he lights up (healthier). When he yells at you to ask where you are going, tell him that a true father wouldn-t harm his kids and to have him call you when he want-s you to return home.
If he wants to quit get him Allen Carr-s book -The easy way to quit smoking-. It is truly easy but he must want to do it. Do not nag him though.
I don-t think you can. And it-s NOT your decision to decide this. It-s his.

I WANT TO QUIT SMOKING BUT I CaNT AFFORD NICOTINE PATCHES? -

CAN SOMEBODY SEND ME A PACK OF NICOTINE PATCHES FOR FREE PLZ I AM SERIOUS ABOUT QUITTING SMOKING
THANX
Well you smoke. Smoke cost money. Use that money to buy your patches.

Your going to need to just deal with the pain of not smoking until you have money.

Shouldn-t of ever started to smoke.
u should quit smoking by not buying the cigarrette packets and also try not to live with friends which enhances u to smolke and nicotine packets are cheper than ciggarette packets
If you don-t quit smoking it will cost you much more in cigarettes. Just buy one box of patches ..it-s all you-ll need.
Lung cancer is HUGELY costly.
Don-t buy cigarettes and buy your own patches.
how come u can afford to buy smokes?
If you have insurance try chantix. It works way better than anything else on the market
Do you have health care insurance? Some insurances cover them. Also, if you know anyone in Ohio...cuyahoga county... they can get them free from the state, til the end of June. There are generic versions that work the same and half the price. Check with you local hospital, they have cessation info, sometimes classes, they may have some assistance with the cost.
If you quit buying cigarettes, you can afford patches, they-re cheaper anyway...good luck, don-t quit trying to quit...
buy gum then.....
Well depending on the insurance you have they should cover it, as long as your doctors writes out a prescription for them, and for any other ideas talk to your doctor that the best way to do it. I would send some to you cause I can get then from my insurance, but I don-t have an address to send them to, I am thinking about quitting myself, but I won-t use the patches

How do you quit smoking weed? -

I smoke almost everyday and I want to quit... Any tips? Thanks!
smoke what ya got and then don-t buy anymore seems the most logical and obvious choice. You gotta -not want it- to stop.
Good luck. I really hope you do it. Here-s some incentive. Both my brothers smoked weed every day and both ended up with mental health problems. The sooner you get help the better. Please do it. Ill be so proud of you if you do!

Somebody gave me a thumbs down. Would love to know why!
Call a local drug help center from the yellow pages. There are options...detox, group help, etc. Do what you-re comfortable with. Good choice to quit.
get a job that requires a random drug test
that will make a quit real quick...
just start drinkin
thats what i did

Hey there, I recommend using the Self Awareness Method - which is free at the moment and helped me quit after 17 years of smoking a pack a day.

Just go to www.how-to-quit-cigarettes.com and get started. The site tells you exactly how you can try various ways to get rid of the habit.

There are live success stories on the site for you to trust your confidence in.

Just remember, you CAN do it.

The answerer above me refers to an audio file that has helped several people. It is not free and I have tried it and it did not work for me. But I still would suggest trying it as you don-t want to give up any option that can help you quit.
my tia has been smoking mostly all her life and has now quit and its been months since shes picked up a cig.
i would say that is not going to be easy seeing how its an addiction
but, you can try to create a hobby...
when you get the craving or feeling that you need to smoke you can do this hobby to keep you busy and help prevent the -time- you need to smoke
hope this helps...my tia gardens lol

edit: maybe you can be the handyman around the house and try to fix things or remodel, exercise like taking a walk
Hey chechin,

I-ve tried just about every method there is out there with zero success.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.

Eventually a friend told me about a NLP method that eliminates the cravings! check out this article:
http://www.squidoo.com/Not_Smoking_Any_M…

It’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!
J.
It-s one of the most toughest things that I am dealing with. I get a lot of advice from this site. Take a look my friend..

I seem to sleep longer than other people and I recently quit smoking. Is this why? -

I need more sleep than other people I am 38 and recently I quit smoking. Would that be a reason for it?
It could be, however as we get older some of us need more sleep than other. Put the two together and the chances are this is the reason. I am not sure what you mean by longer than others? I can sleep for 12 hours straight, but that is due to a underlying health condition, so now and again I literally just crash. If I have been energetic like today, cleaning the home, mowing the lawn then a nice two mile walk, chances are I will need 12 hours tonight and I am a smoker!
Since quitting slows down your metabolism, I would think that it definitely is a factor but other factors should be taken into consideration.
First, how long do you sleep - have you always needed more sleep than others?
Second, when did you quit smoking - how did you quit (ie., patch, cold turkey, etc.)?
I quit on September 1st (am using Chantix) and definitely needed more sleep for the first few weeks but am finding that now I sleep pretty normally again.
Could be! Cigarettes are a stimulant. Since you are not using that stimulant you are probably making up for a sleep deficit.

Congrats on quitting! In an informal survey I made a few years back people who changed their sleep habits by going to bed earlier were much more successful quiting smoking over the long haul. So do not worry about getting more sleep ... it is probably helping you to get through this drastic change in your life.

I had my last cigarette 14 years ago. I am still sleeping a little longer each night. I am no longer a owl; however I do get up very early several morning a week.

How to quit smoking when your partner smokes like a chimney? -

I want to quit smoking, and I know it will bw hard cause my boyfriend smokes constantley. I need to stop smoking cause I have a daughter to think about and to think of all the money that can be put to better use! I need some advise.
Ask him to only smoke outside, and not anywhere around you and your daughter, especially in a vehicle. Hopefully seeing how much better you feel and the money you will save will inspire him to quit also!
You should try to at least see if you can get him to quit with you or at least have him not smoke in your present (and obviously not your daughter-s presence). Hopefully he respects your desire to quit and respect your wishes that he not smoke around you. The difficult part being is he is going to reek of cigarette smoke - which is either going to make you crave one, or totally turn you off because the stench can be bad.
hey its really hard to ans bcoz me too suffering 4m the same pro but let me ans u .....its a gud idea gust go through yoga or meditation ...which helps u to concentrate n go through the work which u like most..

What was it like for you to finally quit smoking cigarettes? -

How did you feel?

What kinds of physical changes did you experience?
I-m 45 years old and I smoked since I was 12. Today, I have never lighted a cigarette for 2 months. Physical changes? Well, my wife told me that my skin looks better; I put on weight(I was skinny and looked like I-m malnourish), I sweat more and smell better, my wife likes and respects me more. She told me that I taste better. lol

Pscyhologically, I feel great and my self-confidence is high. I love all the praises heaped on me for being such a strong person.

Health-related repercussion? I know what you mean and I-ll cut to the chase. If you quit smoking, exercise to control your voracious appetite. That-s the only problem I had with quitting smoking - I eat a lot. But, frankly, ignore people who tell you that there are repercussions to quitting smoking. Please... avoid them weak people.

BTW, I-m saving $200 a month on cigarettes. I heard that cigarette prices will go up next week. My advice: quit cold turkey - no patches whatsover! Just you against the addiction. Dare yourself - see who wins!
Well let me first tell you about my story. My name is Kyle and i had been a smoker for almost eight years. I have been trying to quit for the last three years and i have failed after numerous attempts. I recently saw a girl at a bar smoking a smokeless cigarette. She told me she hadn-t smoked a cigarette in over a month. I def tried them and really liked them. I started of at the full nicotine and then bumped down to the light nicotine then to the ultra light and then completely stopped in 22 days. They worked really well and it feels great to stop smoking. My skin really looks a lot fresher than it did. feels great!!!!
smoked for almost 40 yrs.had bad temper,14 months until i didnt want or even think of them any more.my skin is great 4 a older guy,so to me that is a bunch of crap.had bypass in 88 still could not quit.then two stents 2004 put in me .when one foot got in grave i quit.hardest thing i have had to do in life ..DONT SMOKE
I felt absolutely horrible. I have noted down some stuff on my blog regarding my first 3 days since quitting LoL
A whole LOT of new energy. A bit of regret I didn-t (really) quit sooner. The Chesterfield adverts hooked me, but gracious I am proud to say I quit even before JFK-s money-back program in 1961.
i dont know because i never smoke. i dont want to become stupid from it or look really ugly in a young age and to smell like crap.
I found it a lot easier to quit with an electronic cigarette or -e-cigarette-. It-s amazing really. http://turl.us/b19f0c

There is no way to get him to quit smoking inside the house. None. He smokes all over the house and he smokes a lot. How am I supposed to quit ??
The best thing to do is to spray a lot of aerisol, and use prescription nicotine patches.
The fastest way to quit smoking for me was in an ebook I got at http://www.itshrunk.com/quit-smoking-today This has made my life so much better. good luck and God Bless!

Oh yeah, all that chemical aerosol, that-ll help your lungs;)

you need to think of what your lungs look like and remember this when you light up. Think of the years that you could be taking off your life. Think of the last time you really tasted something. Look at your fingers and see the stains on them. Look at the cars windows and the crap on the inside. Wipe down a wall in the house with a wet paper towel, this is in your lungs as well. Take a deep breath and force as much air in your lungs as you can, it will feel like somebody is stepping on your chest. Look at your teeth and remember the wall, car windows, finger stains and what your lungs might look like.
Or the best thing you might want to try is go for a run and crawl home and then breath through a straw. This is what you have to look forward to if you smoke all your life and this is how you-ll spend your last days. You will not get enough air onto your lungs to do anything, the O2 will be needed to do anything, then sitting bed will be about it and finely you will start to past out because you can not get enough air into your lungs to function. So start breathing through the straw now and see if this is how you want to go.
I told my wife I want to go in the middle of a sex act and I-m guessing her weight.
Not breathing through a straw.
Good luck and if the husband doesn-t care enough about himself thats his problem, but give yourself a chance to live longer and go out a REALLY smell the flowers.
get a scip of chantex and start slipping it in his coffee this drug is supposed to intercept nicotine reciptors in his brain and he wont wanna smoke or designate and area of the house for smoking and second u need to quit on your own and not make up excuses its likely if your husband wont listen to u he doubts ur secenerity to quit well good luck
Is there a power struggle going on here?
Are you just quitting to make him have to quit or are you quitting because you are concerned for your health? Hows the rest of your life style? Does it reflect that concern? Sounds like he just thinks youre full of it and he isnt going to put up with it seeing how he brings home the bacon.
Will power. If you truly want to quit it won-t matter that he-s doing that. On the other hand he should be supportive and take it outside.

Is there no compromising with him? Is he not willing to do at least that much to support your lifestyle change?
That-s really unfair!
You should really move out for a bit till he understands!
If he doesn-t, this is a serious issue and you should consider divorce.
If you-re trying to keep your life longer, then he should respect that.
Divorce husband. Sell house. Problem solved.
tell him no sex til he quits LOL that would suck
