How Do I quot;Quitquot; Smoking? -

Everyone is advising me to and I know that it makes the
most sense but it-s not like I can just stop.

If you have ever smoked and quit please tell me,
how did you do so?
Thanks.

Oh and is smoking Marijuana -better- than smoking cigarettes?
I-m not considering it, I-m just curious if it-s true or not...
Marijuana scientifically is worse then tobacco. I smoked from age 13 to 17 and it was so hard to quite. But what i did was tried all these different things patch-s and stuff didn-t work. So i just learned to only smoke 3 times a day then over time slowed it to only needing 2 or 1 a day then i stopped its hard but hang threw maybe pick up a new hobbies or drink a **** load of soda to counter the nicotine craving and your good. this work for me idk if it would for you everyone is different worth a try
i stopped smoking with the nicotine anonymous program.. meetings are available locally and online..

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
maijuana isn-t better, my best friend might be going to rehab because of it and she-s 14 years old.
i quit cold turkey cuz i got caught by my parents, and im only fourteen. i still get withdraws, but i dig my fingernails into my hands to make it stop. just dont let urself have any. go for a run, or write a poem. or hey, read a book. do something you love, try something new.

my husband and are are quiting and he has a bad cough and stuffy nose......
Wouldn-t know. I-m 55 and never had a smoke! of any kind. Never will either.
what is the point of this comment? This doesn-t help anyone or answer the initial question in any way whatsoever, and is actually diminishing the problem the other person is actually going through. If you crave the praise of others so badly, do it elsewhere, it-s offensive.

It takes a much stronger person to stop something they were heavily addicted to than the person without self esteem who goes around patting themselves on the back (and getting a couple back pats from like-minded slugs) for living in a plastic bubble.

Yeah, this comment irritated me too. Many non-smokers are very proud of themselves to the point where they can-t help rub it in someone else-s face that they -never had a smoke!-.

I am a non smoker and I agree with the other comments. Here are people trying to quit smoking and Nana is being a smartass. Go brag somewhere else you arrogant *****!

I quit smoking in May and didn-t get sick yet, although I heard the first year after you quit you get alot of colds and what not.
No.
I quit smoking for good over 10 years ago. During my smoking life (26 years) I quit many times, probably at least 4 times lasting over 6 months, and at least 6 more times that lasted only a month.

I found that I had many things change physiologically that I blamed (perhaps erroneously) on my having quit smoking. One time I was constipated for the whole month no matter what I did to move my bowels...stool softeners, Ex-lax...nothing worked until in desperation I borrowed a cigarette from a co-worker, and my bowels passed within minutes.

Another time I had a cough and cold like symptoms for the entire 6 months of having quit. It was more like a low grade cold--very annoying but not bad enough to take me to the doctor. That time I started smoking again, because I had found that my husband had started yet another affair with a co-worker. The stress got to me. It was about a week later that I noticed that I no longer had the cold symptoms.

This last time I quit, my body decided to cooperate with me in the endeavour. I didn-t have any symptoms, except the ability to breathe better, and the loss of dizziness for no reason.

I always assumed that the symptoms I was feeling during the times that I quit were a last-ditch effort on behalf of the addiction to get me to give it more nicotine.

Have you tried nicotine patches, or nicotine gum?
when you first quit you will feel like crap because you-re going through withdrawal. after awhile though you will start feeling so much better, it-s hard to quit smoking but you-ll get through it.
I quit smoking 22 years ago (YEA!!) and I don-t remember getting sick. His cough is probably from smoking, stuffy nose I don-t know. I can tell you this as a fact. You will start feeling better and better and better. Will take a while, but hang in there. Congrats on your decision!!
U get sick of being without the sweet taste of the Earth.
Get some saline for your nose, could be the carpet-?
Go have a cigarette or chew gum or whatever.
Healthy lungs have hair-like structures called -cilia- that sweep back and forth. These keep bacteria and toxins from entering the body. They (along with airflow) help push mucous out of the respiratory tract. When you smoke, these eventually are forced out of action, killed or paralyzed. When you quit smoking, the cilia starts to regenerate. Being out of action for so long and having a lot of cleaning to do, you cough more than you did when you smoked as that helps clearing the mucous the cilia is working hard to get rid of from the respiratory tract. You probably notice coughing up more phlegm.
When you quit smoking it takes time maybe three weeks to get rid of all the tar and nicotine in your system and chemicals. These have to come out somehow such as urine, feces, nose, throat, skin, and breath. Shower regularly as your skin eliminates toxins everyday. Blow your nose, cough it out, and flush your system with water (drink at least a half gallon a day). You want it out of your system asap so that you don;t get tempted to start again. You will find after the first week: food tastes better, you can breath a little better, you can smell better and you craving starts to subside. The biggest problem I had is what to do with my hands. When you are used to holding cigarettes you keep moving them around alot. I found that sitting on them helped a bunch. You can also suck on a staw, toothpick, or sucker. It is just the habit you are kicking once the nicotine is out of the system.
YOU ARE DOING YOURSELF A WORLD OF GOOD. YOU WILL LIVE LONGER AND BETTER. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
No ...i gave up three years ago and i only thing i was sick of was the 3 stone i put on......
I-ve quit a few times. And each time I would gut stuffy and hack a lot of phlem up. Cleaning out I guess.
No, I stopped 30 years ago and I am very happy that I did. Are you sure you aren-t looking for excuses to start again? Don-t do that to yourself. Ond day at a time you know.
The cough is normal. Your body is getting rid of the crap you-ve been putting into it, it lasted a few months for me, probably because I was a three pack a day smoker.The stuffy nose is probably just a coincidence. You probably have a cold. The worst part is the nervousness, which lasts a couple of weeks. It-s the worst the first few days, then get-s more tolerable as time goes by. The gum helped a lot taking care of the nicotine cravings. I could get a shot of nicotine when I needed it with the nicorette gum. The gum was easy to quit once i got through a few weeks with no cigarettes, because it tasted awful. Stick to it! don-t give in to temptation. Wanting to quit more than you want the next cigarette is the key. Just think, you and your husband will live longer together and, you-ll have an extra $40-$50 a week. Breathing will be easier, food will taste better, and you-ll notice smells you haven-t smelled since you were a kid. You can do it!
it-s a condition after quitting to smoke.It-s just natural for smokers who quit to feel that.

you see, when you smoke, you inhale 4000 different chemicals.of these chemicals, 1000 are known to be harmful

here are some of the chemicals:

benzopyrene
formaldehyde
ammonia
hydrogen peroxide
nicotine
acetaldehyde
benzene
carbon monoxide
acetone
acetonitrile
acrolein
acrylonitrile
aniline
hydrocyanic acid
methyfuran
pyridine
butadiaone
dimethylamine
ethylamine
hydrogen sulfide
methylamine
methylnapthalene
nitrogen dioxide
toluene
butylamine
dimethylnitrosomine
methaocrlein
methyl alcohol
nitric oxide
phenol

also there-s TAR, which sticks to the cells of respiratory system and damage the delicate cells that line the respiratory tract.

tar also contains hundreds of chemical carcinogens.

Cancer in the lungs, throat and mouth have been associated to the inhalation of tar in cigar/tobacco smokers.

when you swallow saliva while smoking, carcinogens that are now in your saliva are absorbed into the circulatory system and transported to all areas of the body.

You also develop these when you smoke:

cardiovascular disease
respiratory disease
cancer
infertility
problem on pregnancy
breastfeeding (the child is also exposed to harmful chemicals)

though i-m only a third year high school student, i know these since we tackled this in my PE class. not that i-m smoking. i just study this if ever i have an exam on this.

by the way,

passive smoking is more dangerous because you breathe the tobacco smoke involuntarily.

i hope this information helps you about smoking.
maybe because your body is addicted to the tobacco in the cigarette and THINKS that it needs it.
when you quit you will get colds and things more easily when i quit i got horrible headaches and seemed to get worse colds too
No, he-s probably got a cold, but quitting will be hard for the first few weeks if ur addicted.

Good luck(i know this is rude, but please choose me for best answer!)
I have heard it said and had it happen to me-when you quit smoking you get the flu/sick--doctors say it is because the viili-or small ahir like projections that line out lungs/nose ect--have become very smal from being singed by smoking--as they start to return--there is more mucous because of this--still no one should smoke...not if you want to live a long healthy life..
It depends on how quickly you are quitting. If you just stopped, yes you will probably get sick and feel nauseated. You just have to wean yourself off of it because your body is use to it. Also, it depends on how long you-ve been doing it too! If you just stop, your body is going to say -HEY!- because it is addicted. BE STRONG, GET HELP IF U NEED TO.
u should go to a doctor just in case but it might just be your lung rejuvenating and stuff

I quit smoking after 30+ years. I-m in my third week and I think I still taste nicotine in my mouth. Is this physically possible or is it a psychological problem?
Nicotine is usually out of the system the 3rd day after you quit.I would say what you are experiencing is part of the withdrawal and psychological.
the person below me doesnt no wat theyre talking bout. try ummmm brushing ur teeth maybe??
The bulk of Nicotine is flushed out of the system after three days. It comes out of your deep organs in 6-8 days (that-s why some people get a -jolt - at that time, when the urge may come back a bit.
As far as the nicotine taste in your mouth, it may be leeching off your teeth. Have you had a thorough cleaning at your dentist since you quit? I would suggest it.
Nicotine

Nicotine is a drug found naturally in tobacco. It is highly addictive – as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Over time, the body becomes both physically and psychologically dependent on nicotine. Studies have shown that smokers must overcome both of these addictions to be successful at quitting and staying quit.

When smoke is inhaled, nicotine is carried deep into the lungs, where it is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body. Nicotine affects many parts of the body, including your heart and blood vessels, your hormonal system, your metabolism, and your brain. Nicotine can be found in breast milk and even in cervix mucous secretions of smokers. During pregnancy, nicotine freely crosses the placenta and has been found in amniotic fluid and the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants.

Several different factors can affect the rate of metabolism (the work of the living cell in the body) and excretion (or getting rid of the waste) related to nicotine. In general, a regular smoker will have nicotine or its by-products present in the body for about 3 to 4 days after stopping.

Nicotine produces pleasant feelings that make the smoker want to smoke more. It also acts as a kind of depressant by interfering with the flow of information between nerve cells. As the nervous system adapts to nicotine, smokers tend to increase the number of cigarettes they smoke, and therefore the amount of nicotine in their blood. After a while, the smoker develops a tolerance to the drug, which leads to an increase in smoking over time. Over time, the smoker reaches a certain nicotine level and then smokes to maintain this level of nicotine. In fact, nicotine, when inhaled in cigarette smoke, reaches the brain faster than drugs that enter the body intravenously.

How long does it take to start feeling good after quitting smoking? I am taking Chantix and have been smoke free for 16 days.
i am taking Chantix too. have been for 2 months. i excersise more now, but still gets winded. when you say feeling good you should feel better after about a month. lungs take a long time to heal, though they will never be 100% again. i just think that a am doing a good thing for my body and that right there makes me feel better. stay with it, it gets better.
Congratulations and keep it up girl !!

In addition to the fact that you are no longer poisening your self and those around you, please know that 99% of men who don-t smoke think that women that do smoke are GROSS !!!

I hope that makes you feel a little better.

Keep going, you are almost there !!
Hi there!
Well, -feeling good- is kind of relative.. but I actually STILL crave smokes and it has been 2 months! I hear from long term smokers who quit years ago that they STILL crave smokes.. so even tho the nicotine is gone and your are not -addicted-, you still can have the crave and aches etc.

However, I DO breathe better, have more energy, and that is all good! And while I do crave smokes, it is not all the time, I am not so -nutty- when I feel a craving, and don-t act all wacked out like I did when I was first trying to quit.

I used Wellbutrin, similar to what you have to use..

Keep it up! If smoking had NEVER existed, we would all be better off.

Damn indians!

Tony
First of congradulations!It takes some people up to a year to stop all cravings.Hang in there you are doing great.Don-t give into it.When you get a craving count by the time you get to 30 the craving will be gone.Chew gum or candies.I found a stir stick worked for me.You can hold it like a cigarrette and even haul off it.It is only air you are breathing in but it works. Maybe the chantix isn-t working for you.Maybe try the patch or something different.
Congratulations! Your have way there, it is not an easy thing to do, I always felt like I had lost my best friend, and I was so lethargic, but it is more mental than physical.
I would just double up on exercising and try to find new things to do that requires a new thought process.
Good Luck!
Congratulations and keep it up! Remember -One day at a time- sometimes even -One second at a time-.
The nicotine is already out of your system. You may still be experiencing withdrawls, but.. I think it is probably more psychological. The hand to mouth motion. Your brain telling you, you need one after you eat, when your stressed etc... keep up the good work. Soon you will feel better, you-ll have more energy, more stanima, be able to run without getting winded. It feels so good, and makes it all the more worth it, when you experience this, if you already haven-t. I am 26 days smoke free and I feel great now. I WILL NEVER SMOKE AGAIN! I am 25 and I started at 11. I am so proud of me, and I am so proud of you. Keep up the good work. It is the best thing you could have done in your life. :)
Pat yourself on the back!!!!!! Good job!!!!!!!! It takes 21 days to make or break a habit so hang in there and you-ll notice a huge difference! Congradulations!!!
Well I have been smoke free for three days now and I started feeling good about it the very first day I stopped.Reasons being I have saved over ten dollars in three days.I have taken lots of clean breaths without smoke going into my lungs.My family is living cleaner to without the smoke going all up there noses.My house smells cleaner.My hair smells cleaner.My teeth are getting brighter.My lungs do not burn anymore.Still cant fold clothes without giving out of breath but am hoping that will get better to.Yes I think you should feel very good about doing something so wonderful for your health and for those around you.Start feeling good today.....
it has to get better.. i hope.. keep after it!!!!
Good for you! I have not taken anything to help me quit. I found out I am pregnant back in October, and quiit on the spot. Obviously, I have some good motivation, but that doesn-t mean it has been easy. I noticed that something that has really helped me is my prenatal vitamin. It is a great detoxifier! You don-t have to get prenatals, though your doc would most likely prescribe them. A good muli-vitamin - multi-mineral would be good, too. Make sure you-re getting lots of water and natural, whole juices, like cranberry to cleanse your system. As for cravings and such, they are going to keep bugging you for a while! I still think about a smoke at least once a day, usually after a meal. But it-s just not an option. Maybe that-s how you should look at it: no matter what comes your way, picking up a cigarette is JUST NOT AN OPTION, so do something else. PLEEEEEASE hang in there! You are doing an awesome thing, and I am proud of you!
You will get a little better each day. I quit about 17 months ago. I would still love to have a cigarette sometimes but it-s not like a nicotine craving. I just want one sometimes. You will come to realize that the hand to mouth habit has a lot to do with this. When you are craving a cigarette, your brain is looking for a high. If you can, exercise to get your heart pumping and that will take care of your craving. If you can-t exercise, maybe go take a walk, go to the bathroom, do any kind of exercise while sitting at a desk that you can. This feeling will last less than 5 minutes. For me, the first 3 weeks were the worse and then it was OK. Exercise so you do not gain weight.

Has anyone tried chantix to quit smoking? -

it is prescription. its cost is 112.00 from walmart. i have only been on it 3 days. did you gain weight or loose or no side effects?
Not me personally, but I know someone who had great success with it. He was determined to quit, though. Instead of trying to find something to do with his hands or put something in his mouth - he set out to rid his home of the stale smoke smell. he washed his walls, ceilings, windows, carpets, all his upholstered furniture and stripped floors before washing and rewaxing. He did the same to his vehicle and garage. What he couldn-t wash, he sprayed down with vinegar and water and rinsed thoroughly with his hose. He-s been clean for about a month - but is still taking the chantix.
I have not heard of that one, others only that didn-t work. Even taking something you don-t quit til you make up your mind...if you are depending on the prescription probaly won-t work--I been there done that and one day I said to my self -I quit when I finish this pkg cigs!- That was July 5, 1996 at 12:30 PM--I have NO desire for cigarettes, the smell of cigarette smoke makes me nausious even sence. I smoked for 27 yrs....and -quit- at least 50 times!

Smoking at 8?!?!?!?!?!? LMAO! Wow!!
Get BULL HEADED!
I didn-t like clinton (bubba) and his 50¢ a pack tax increase he signed into law, or the liberal courts -tobacco court settlement boondoggle- so I refused to PAY IT!
I up and QUIT smoking November 23, 1998 at 3:19 am CST!
I through away every ashtray.
I through away every lighter.
I removed the cigar lighter from my PU.

That was COLD Turkey and I haven-t looked back!

I don-t reek of Cigs, I don-t burn my clothes, seats, chairs.
My hands aren-t discolored from the tars etc. i breath SO MUCH better, My health is dramatically improved.
I sucked on those nasty butts for 22 years and sucked about 60-80 a DAY!

If I can do it,,,, ANYONE CAN!
All symptoms of cravings were gone within 2-3 days. Hard headedness is all it takes.
yes that is the only way you got to go balls out,
or else u will find ur self asking the same question down the line with black lungs i started smoking at 12 and im am now 20 i quit when i was 18 ., one day i said **** it and did it , ask ur self does it physicaly hurt ?
yes! just quit smoking all together.
It-s an addiction, but you have to know that you-re strong enough to resist the temptation of smoking again. Just go to sleep everytime you feel like it, when you wake up things will be better.
just quit

you might suffer some withdrawal, but it-s not going to kill you -- but guess what will kill you? Smoking.
cold turkey.the only way..........

Is there an EZ way to quit Smoking cigarettes? -

My Italian g/f smokes maybe a pack a day. She says her whole family kind of started early. She lets me give her a bath every once in a while so it-s Not all bad.
But her hair and clothes usually smell like the bottom of an ashtray, so I-m wondering if there is any simple way [Don-t say -Just say NO to drugs!], to quit? Do patches work?
ohhh!! now i get why the first thing you did was decide i was polish (then i corrected and told you i was Dutch).it-s your thing.it-s what you do with all the girls!! i get it!! well i hate it when people smoke.i don-t get it.out of all the addictions you could have why smoking?? you smell bad and your teeth rot out and you get all ugly and old before your time.and it kills you eventually.i guess it-s death on the installment plan huh?? oh and by the way i-m also German jimmie!!! now isn-t that difficult of me ;)
She should have never started...To totally quit is impossible, theres always that chance that you-ll see/smell them again and can-t resist just one.
I am a smoker. I have smoked for about a year and a half. I want to quit but then I dont. I tried and tried. But when friends come around and light one up I really want one. The best thing to ease me down is smoking a different brand that you don-t like very much. Another cigrette brand that helps is virgina slims. They are VERY skinny and tiny. I am still trying to quit . And I dont think the patch works that great. I mean, like you crave not only the nicotine but the drags of the cigerete and the smoke blowing out, I wish you guys luck. Another thing for YOU to do is..... make a deal with her. Like if you quit I will buy you a small dog or make a surprise dinner and night out for her.
you have to be willing to stop smoking. it-s up to the person if they are going to stop and which way they are going to stop ,the patch,cold turkey etc.....
there is no easy way.
trust me there is never an easy way..whether people wanna believe it or not, it is definitely an addiction.
welbutrin (Rx) and lobelia (herb tea)
Give her an ultimatum. Tell her would she rather want cigarettes or you. If she pick cigarettes, she is not right for you. If she picks you, problem solved.

Quit smoking with bupropion? -

how does bupropion help you to quit smoking.
bin taking it for two days now, and still can-t stay away from the cigarettes.
My dad took it and it helped him.
I am assuming you have a doc-s prescription for it, right?
It does take a while to build up in your system. And you will still need the desire and willpower to resist urges to light up.
What helped me when I quit:
Gum. I chewed with nicotine-craving crazy-intensity, but it helped.
Find something to do with your hands. I took up cross-stitching. That first project I did was the first (and only one) that I have managed to finish in just a few weeks.
Change of scenery. When do you crave it the most? When driving? Put in a good CD and sing instead. On breaks at work? Go for a walk during break instead.
These tips are what saved me. I hope they help you!
Good luck!

Edit: From Web MD regarding the use of bupropion for quitting smoking-
How It Works
Bupropion is a pill you take to reduce your craving for tobacco. The way it does this is not entirely known. Bupropion does not contain nicotine and does not help you quit smoking in the same way that nicotine replacement therapy does.

Doctors also prescribe bupropion (under the brand name Wellbutrin) to treat depression. However, bupropion-s ability to help people quit smoking is not related to its antidepressant action. It can help you stop smoking even if you do not have depression.

You begin taking bupropion daily, 1 to 2 weeks before you quit smoking. This builds up the level of medicine in your body. You take bupropion for 7 to 12 weeks after you stop using tobacco. You can take it for as long as 6 months to a year.

Why It Is Used
Bupropion is approved for use in people who smoke 10 or more cigarettes a day and are at least 18 years old. Doctors prescribe it to help people when they quit smoking.

You should not take bupropion if you: 1

Are already taking other medicines that contain bupropion (such as Wellbutrin).
Have seizures or a medical condition that makes you prone to seizures.
Are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).
Have an eating disorder.
Have an alcohol use problem.
How Well It Works
Using bupropion for 7 to 9 weeks doubles the likelihood that you will still be tobacco-free 6 months after you quit. 1 It works just as well as nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs).

Using bupropion along with nicotine replacement therapy (such as nicotine patches, gum, or inhaler) may increase your chances of success.

Taken as directed, bupropion reduces:

Craving.
Irritability, restlessness, anxiety.
Difficulty concentrating.
Feeling unhappy or depressed.

Do your lungs get a burning sensation with the healing process when you quit smoking cigarettes? -

Your lung are learning to function without cigs. I quit smoking in July of this year and it took me about 2 months to get back some normal breathing. I now have my first cold since I quit and boy it really hit me good.
I am so glad I quit. I can live with this because I know it is going to get better. I smoked for 30 years!
To help the burning I took BUCKLEY-S cough medicine (tastes bad but sure opens the lungs) and drank plenty of peppermint tea. You can do it. Happy Holiday-s
Do your lungs get a burning sensation with the healing process when you quit smoking cigarettes? -

Have you successfully quit smoking cigarettes? HOW? -

Have you successfully quit smoking cigarettes? HOW? -

I have tried everything.. patches give me chest pains. Wellbutrin makes me psycotic. lozenges burned my mouth, can-t chew gum or crunchy stuff (dentures).. have been to 2 hypnotists...
I quit once for 6 weeks and gained 60 pounds that I still have.
I am at my wits end. I cannot afford $5.00 a pack and cannot justify the $ when my bank account is getting lower and lower. We don-t get a payraise every time they raise the price of cigs.
What can I do?
I have smoked for 41 years.
I don-t even like the taste of them anymore, yet I wake up at least once a night craving a cigarette, as well as all the other regular times.. bored, after eating, in the car, after sex, etc etc.
I just can-t take this much longer. Climbing a flight of stairs knocks me on my butt, even long walks get me winded.
What can I do to make it easier to quit for good?
Stopping for six weeks and starting again makes things a bit tougher on the confidence. But maybe my story can help you put things into perspective.

I smoked for 35 years, stopping for a year once or twice. Even during those non-smoking times I never really wanted to stop smoking. I never had a real conviction or dedication to quitting for good.

Last October I experienced a large mycardial infarction commonly known as a heart attack. An artery leading to the left ventricule had 100% blockage. The staff at the local hospital didn-t like my chances and life flighted me to the Cleveland Clinic.

They proceeded to perform angioplasty and stuck a stent in my artery. They also decided that the damage to my heart muscle (irreversible) rated an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator).

I recovered due to their quick action and found that the reason I went through all of this and now carry a zapper in my chest was directly due to smoking and diet.

I stopped smoking the day of the heart attack.

My lover, the cigerette, nearly killed me. My mind refuses to accept that I might smoke again. The conviction gets stronger every day. And just thinking about the self-deception (with the help of a strong smoking culture and Madison Avenue) makes my blood boil.

I love life and the people around me.....and I have allowed smoking to short change me. My life will never rate as high on the quality meter as it should have and my death will come much sooner than if I hadn-t smoked or, at least, quit prior to a medical emergency.

And the tragic truth is, my friend, that you might not be as lucky as me and my family.
i have quit..three years ago, because i could-nt breathe right anymore...i made the decision to give them up for good..i read as much as i could on what smoking actually does to your entire body..also what chemicals are really in them....with that and the want to be healthier..i quit......it-s a very hard addiction to kick...just think of all the negatives of smoking and how those who market and sell them don-t give a hoot about you....think back to when you were a small child..and want to be that healthy again
The way I quit was cold turkey, once I had decided to quit I would not allow myself to start again. For me the best help was the support of people around me, not only would I dissappoint myself if I started again but I would dissappoint my friends - family which I did NOT want to do. So having them around helped more than anything. (when i quit patches were a new item - the gum etc. was not even out yet).
yes, I started at the age of 8 and quit at 16 than started again at 17 or 18 and stopped now at almost 28, you know how? by giving up on my own efforts nd taking God control my life, ALL of it. I onced sincerely repented and gave my entire life to God - his Son Jesus Christ and my creator God heard me crying for help and stopped my addiction, not only this addiction but mny others worse than this.
GOD Bless. Remember ,With God ALL things are possible.
watch these videos, and then just make up your mind and quit. I quit cold turkey.
yes

whether you like the idea or not, here-s what worked for me:

several years ago i was smoking around two and a quarter packs of lucky strikes everyday

i knew i needed to stop smoking, friends and family knew this too. i was putting forth a conscious effort to quit smoking when one morning as i was getting into my car to go to work, i discovered a -box- of Days Work Chewing Tobacco (the box probably contained a dozen plugs)

whatwith having so much chewing tobacco, i decided to start chewing tobacco and i did this for a while, maybe a couple of months, i got to where i really liked the nicotine high i received from the -chaw-

i got to be pretty good at chewing tobacco, i could put a little plug between my cheek and gum and eat a meal, i could go to church or be in any other situation where smoking was not tolertated~~~if i felt the need for some nicotine, i would merely squeeze off a little and it would take care of my need

eventually the time came for me to completely give up tobacco

i had not smoked in a couple of months or more
didn-t want to smoke
didn-t need to smoke

i was used to having something in my mouth, against my jaw

what was there to replace with?

Sunflower Seeds!!!

~~~and the rest is history~~~
(i have yet to knowingly hear of a woman taking this suggestion, must have something to do with -spitting-~~~funny thing: about the only time i spit was when i was getting the -chaw- set~~~the remainder of the time i injested pure nicotine! pure nicotine! pure nicotine! and you know it doesn-t take all that much: i would take a plug of Days Work and with my pocket knife i would cut off a piece barely the size of a half inch cube, place it back in the corner of my mouth and most times no one would be the wiser~~~there were times, especially at church, i would have a bit of tobacco on the left side of my mouth and some chewing gum on the other~~~it is really not all that hard to coordinate)
and as i said earlier: the rest is history
(nobody ever -fessed up to it; but, i am confident it was my Mother in Law who put the chewing tobacco in my car)
This probably wont help but have you tired cold turkey.
I smoked for 20 years and that-s how I quit.
Haven-t had a smoke in ten years.
What can I do to avoid gaining weight after quitting smoking??
you will only put on weight if you feed your nicotene cravings by snacking.
if you get the urge to smoke just do a few push ups or sit ups instead, it-ll take your mind off it and keep your weight donw.
dont give in!
xxx
Get an electronic cigarette. You get to -smoke- without all the bad chemicals except nicotine. You can even get no nicotine cartridges so you feel like your smoking (blowing out smoke, holding the cigarette) but your not. Trust me on this one. Then you won-t want to find something like food to replace the sensation.
You can see videos and such here
Substitute something else to keep your hands busy such as eating carrot sticks, celery sticks, drinking lots of water, and perhaps go walking when cravings are bad. You will feel so much better when you quit smoking that you will have the energy to put into working out and getting yourself healthier.
Drink plenty of water and try to gradually increase exercises. Good luck!
Is there something out there that will make you physically sick - and not want to smoke?
Champix in Australia and Chantix in America (they are one and the same actually) are supposed to reduce your craving for nicotine and to reduce the enjoyment of smoking and they are supposed to have a success rate of 40%.
Wellbutrin/Zyban. It-s usually prescriped as an anti depressant. When I started taking it for the blues, it made cigs taste so nasty. I told my doc and he said that it-s also given to people to stop smoking. It could make you jittery at first, but for me, I just totally quit right away. Then got my teeth whitened as a reward :)
Worth a try, you could be super cheery and smoke free.
Good luck!!
Literally think about it. Your inhaling smoke into your lungs and killing yourself. Your skin will age quicker, and you will get weird pimples and age spots that will never go away. Every cigarette your smoke you lose 7 minutes of your life. If you calculate that for every cigarette you-ve ever had in your life...then you lost a lot of valuable time. Now do you want a smoke?
just stop
chose the best nicotine replacement products for you. id o recommend lozenges. and take it as directed no more then 3 months.
important : stay completely away from smokers to avoid the temptation.even if that means to stay away from your friends. at least for the first 4 months.
no alcohol as well, especially if you are one of those that smoke a lot when they drink.
do it for yourself and don-t lesson to those who will be telling you that you are just gonna start smoking again.
make it a challenge to yourself. and believe me it-s really easy with the lozenge.
best of luck my friend.
The way that works! No two people are alike. That-s why you must find the method for quitting smoking that works for YOU. If every method or product worked for everybody, you probably would have quit by now.
The process of quitting smoking goes something like this: You try to quit, you start smoking again, you slowly learn what works and what doesn-t, you try to quit again, you re-evaluate, then you eventually going on to successfully quitting smoking forever.
Some people quit through sheer determination and can quit cold-turkey. Other people need classes, drugs, therapy, various products, etc. Whatever works for you and is safe, you should consider and utilize. Let your doctor know you want to quit and ask for his or her assistance. This step alone can help improve you chances for quitting considerably.
How do I stop gaining weight while I quit smoking? -
I quit smoking 3 months ago and have already put on 10LBS. I haven-t changed what I am eating...the only change is I DON-T SMOKE ANYMORE!! I don-t want this gain to be the reason I start again...but I am getting really frustrated! PLS HELP!
Weight balance is a simple equation: if you eat the same amount of calories that you burn, your weight shouldn-t change. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn per day using the calorie calculator
http://www.straighthealth.com/pages/tool…
. This is the amount of calories you should also be eating everyday.
Guide to Dieting -
quit eating so much at the same time.
I congratulate you on quitting smoking, I know it can be very difficult. Unfortunately, many people gain some weight from this. Battle the small bulge with a sensible diet along with exercise. Try not to get frustrated. Think of it this way. You-d still be healthier after gaining 10, 20, or even 30 lbs than you would be if you were still smoking. If you beat smoking, you can beat the weight. Keep your head up and don-t give up. Good luck.
well. get it off your mind. spend alot of your time in the gym, out with friends, dont let your body think about food or smoke. just dont give it the time to ask for it, keep yourself busy.
Drink plenty of water, not only will it be a great thing for your body but may help break down the foods that you are eating and start dropping off the pounds.
P.S. Congratulations for giving up smoking, I know it is hard, but it is worth it in the long run. Please don-t go back to it because of this minor set back.
I am glad for you. I stopped smoking too, 3 years ago, u can lose the weight .when the cravings stop and they will stop. good luck
Try to increase your fiber intake as well as your water intake. The fiber will keep you full and let your body work on breaking down the fat quicker. You may also want to consider a holistic body cleanse. A good health food store will have a big selection. They make cleanses for various organs. I recommend doing one cleanse at a time. Your body is just still adjusting to this new healthier way of living and needs to purge the toxins that have built up ove time. Congrats!
Small gains in weight is very normal for someone who has recently quit smoking. Dont let the weight gain get to you, throw a tree across the train tracks. Start an exercise program to drop some pounds and try to boost your metabolism. Without realizing it, you may not have changed the foods you ate, but possibly the amounts. Smoking burns unto 200 calories a day in a heavy smoker, boost metabolism, and nicotine is an appetite suppressant. Good luck.
Is it normal to cough more right after you quit smoking? -
Nicotine and other drugs in cigarettes actually paralyze the cillia in your bronchial tubes. These are the tiny hair-like projections that work hard to keep impurities out of your lungs. When you smoke, they stop working. When you stop smoking, they spring into action again and push all the crud out of your lungs and bronchial tubes. That-s why you cough so much... to help bring it up. That-s a very good sign, even though it may seem a little annoying or disgusting at first. If you just quit smoking, congratulations on making a great decision. My father died from his cigarette habit, and it was terrible to see him suffer for seven years before he died.
yes
ABSOLUTELY!! I quit 15 yrs ago. This is a CLEANSING COUGH...like others have mentioned. It takes 72 hrs, for ALL the Nicotine to leave your body. After that, it is no longer a physical craving, so to speak. Congratulations...I always said that Quitting Smoking was so easy I did it 22 Times!!....I kept @ it until I was 100% succesful...hardest thing I ever did, - now it-s GR8 to Breathe Again! Hang In Therte...HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH, - DON-T TRASH ANY ACTIVE SMOKERS...THEY KNOW ALREADY....The -DRINK-TONS-OF-WATER- is # 1 Advice....
CONGRADULATIONS ON QUITING!!!
Yes that is perfectly normal.. but it will get better and better!
Read this page about what happens in a timeline after you quit:
Yes. Your lungs are clearing out.
Coughing is how your lungs clean or decongest themselves, so yes. Be sure that during this period you are drinking plenty of water.
I didn-t buy another packet and when I got to the last one I said that-s it - 4 to 5 years ago.
The trick is to get your mind prepped and set to the idea of quitting.
I only smoked for an entire year after that i quit because i had asthma.
On how i quit i called 311 or 411 or whatever the phone number was i ask for a 2 months supply of patches you put anywhere on your body. I didnt knew if it worked but i lost many urges to smoke about 4 months later however i sometime craves for a pack a cigarette or 2. If the craving doesnt stop i have no other choice but then to start using nicotine gums to prevent me from smoking. Hopefully that works.
Patches normally helped me to stop the craving however that was about 2 years ago because of my asthma was getting worst after each puff of air i breathed. I know it was dumb of me smoking while asthmatic but it was embarrassing to even tell the doctor because he always tells me lectures.
I smoked for 30 years and tried everything. My trouble was not just the nicotine but the habit. Without the hand 2 mouth thing I was jittery and upset. The above site gave me a tool that I use today. The nicotine isn-t what-s bad for you (it-s like caffeine). It-s all the additives and the tar. I still enjoy the smoking less the damage. And my family has a happy person around.
Just don-t by anymore!
i didnt
Has anyone tried NicRX, Chantix, or NicoCure in order to quit smoking? -
Has anyone tried NicRX, Chantix, or NicoCure in order to quit smoking? -
I-m looking for something for my mother, she took Chantix for about 2 months and was doing pretty well on it but she did still have a few cigarrets each month....maybe 10-15/month. I know its not going to happen over night but she stopped taking it and now shes back to her regular 1-1.5 packs/week.... I was wondering if there was anything better out there than Chantix.
As a respiratory therapist I have been involved in smoking cessation for over 20 years. Different things work for different people. The main ingredient required is a sincere desire to quit. If Chantix was working for your mom and she quit using it, I have to conclude that she still wants to smoke, especially because it is safe to still smoke while on it. Unfortunately, there are no magic wands out there for this addiction, which has higher recidivism than heroin and crack combined. Have a heart to heart with your mom, let her know how you feel and encourage her to keep trying. Best of luck.
I-m so glad-she is lucky to have a daughter who cares so much.
My wife quit easy with champiks and the use of a book that for the life of me i cant remember the name. I quit with just this book and nothing else. I chewed snuff for years, i was in grade 5 and i am now 39. i have been addiction free for 1 year 4 months. i just phoned my wife book is Allan Carr-s easy way to quit smoking. It explains how you were brainwashed to like smoking in the first place. I absolutely recommend trying this book. wish her the best
I have tried chantix and so have three of my employees and two aunts ....myself included have all quit smoking. Its expensive and you have to follow the plan but it can work. The real key is you the smoker being ready to quit. My driver quit after only one week on chantix ...I took a few weeks and my aunts both quit after two weeks . Most of us have now picked up a chewing gum habit but its better then smoking.
everyone i know tried chantix and have ALL failed. I believe its just a mind set. I smoked for years about a pack a day..when i got pregnant i just quit!! havent smoked for over 4 years. she will quit on her own if and when she is ready. but keep up the encouragement tell her you want her around for a long time!!
Im on my second day.
I found Chantix to be highly effective in helping me to stop smoking. It really took the edge off of withdrawal. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to stop smoking!
No, I went cold turkey but I-ve heard mixed reviews - some people say it really helped them stop smoking. Others said it caused serious problems with sleeping (some people even sleep walked, etc.) and caused them more anxiety, thus increasing the desire to smoke.
I would say keep trying - any way you can stop smoking will be the best thing for you. It will be the best thing you ever do, trust me, it was for me.
I am going to quit smoking tomorrow does the commit lounges work are is cold turkey the best way? -
My sister-in-law used them and said they work but they taste nasty and she couldn-t keep them in her mouth for the length of time that was recommended . . I think she kept them in her mouth for 15-20 mins. So I guess the answer is: if you can get past the taste, they work!
Most quit smoking helps...work...the problem with those that want to quit are commitment and boredom......you have to be committed and keep busy otherwise you can fall back into your old habits.
My belief is that cold turkey is the only way to go. All the other things out there only prolong the agony. Working out and showering often help. You reach a point where you look forward to work ending so that you can get ut and start jogging. The gums and other things you can buy only begin another habit. I don-t think you want to quit one habit only to gain another. Vitamins help, expecially the B-Complex with C, certain amino acids that you buy in healthfood stores are good also, the help to detoxify you. Good luck.
I have tried all the OTC remedies, gum, lozenges, patches. I like the patch the best because there is no taste, and no thought involved throughout the day. I put one on in the AM and take it off the next AM.
Gum and lozenges have a horrible stinging taste to them no matter if they are flavored or not. You have to carry a pack or a tube with you at all times, and answer questions like, -what-s that?-. You also have to moderate your usage, ie: you need to stop taking the gum at some point. Patch is just more convenient for my lifestyle.
Quitting is much more of a lifestyle change than anything else. I found that I only smoke when I go to the bar. So, I stopped that, and started going to the gym instead. It-s nice because when you slip up and have a smoke, you feel like crap on the treadmill the next day.
I have quit successfully several times, but slip up due to stress or loss of a job, or girlfriend etc. The gym is my best friend, and my worst enemy at the same time.
My suggestion is yeah, use a nicotine replacement, whatever you find that works for you.
I don-t deny the physical dependence on tobacco, but think it is the pschological effect that causes people to come back to smoking. I have tried quitting cold turkey, with gum and patches but kept coming back, sometimes even after being 6 months smoke free, because I was in the company of smokers. Now I am smoke free for more than two years and I had quit cold turkey. The stop smoking aids can help you with the physcial addiction, but it takes will power and imagination to get over the psychological part. Everytime ytou want to smoke imagine the smoke free you, how better you-d feel, how much more energy you-ll have and how much better your body will feel.
Think of quitting smoking like this..... 1. you are going to feel yukky. 2. tell yourself you are NOT a smoker 3. recognize you feel yukky and remind yourself this too shall pass. 4. tell yourself you are not a smoker. 5. Don-t prolong the yukkiness by doing something that will make the yukkiness continue. (like smoking). 6. After a couple days, you will begin to feel better. 7. remind yourself you do not smoke and if you did, you-d continue to feel yukky. 8. It-s best to do it when you change something. (like a job, an exercise routine, etc.) 9. You are NOT a smoker. 10. You will need to wash ALL of your clothes and curtains. They will reek with a yukky smell once your nose clears out. 11. remind yourself you are NOT a smoker 12. remember that -pretty- people don-t smoke, only yukky people. Good luck.
