I need advice from anyone who has successfully quit smoking? -

I have absolutely NO will power lol, and I-m so scared to quit. I-m scared I-ll just flip out and kill someone lol, I-m scared I-ll gain weight, and mostly I-m just scared that I-ll fail and I-ll never quit smoking!

Has anyone successfully quit? If so, HOW? Personal stories and experiences welcome! Thanks so much!
the questions should be just how many times did you try to quit??? For me it was literally dozens, so if you do fail, you will not be any worse off than the rest of us who has tried and failed.

The key is to keep trying, and if you truly want to quit you will when your ready to. And for petes sake do not start taking vitamins to try and quit smoking... talk about substitution....When you start to get the urge to smoke do something that you normally would not do while smokeing. Keep your hands busy and keep your mind busy...

You will succeed!

I have tried quitting cold turkey more times than I can count. I have tried -the patch- multiple times- I have tried Zyban and have tried the gum as well. I have even tried the patch and Zyban. All off these did not help me quit. Not because they are not good products because yes I did cut back and so some would say that was a small victory for the time and I would agree with them.

But I would eventually get back to where I was. But that-s the point -I- would go back it wasn-t the quit smoking aids that went back it was me. I eventually started a slow process where I went from a Marlboro Red down to lights/ ultra lights. I know I know big deal right.... Well for each step down I made it was a small victory for me and I felt good about it. So it helped. This last time I tried has been the most successful I have even been.

It started when I friend who is a OB/Gyn nurse asked if I had heard of or tried Chantix. I said I hadn-t and she left it at that.... Then one day a few eeks later I was just getting ready to pull into my drive and she was pulling out and through our vehicle windows she handed me a pamphlet on Chantix and said she wanted me to read it. By this time i was curious about it and had asked about it and heard good things. So I decided to read it. I then talked to my wife about it to see if she had heard anything about it. Went to our frined and asked her about it got the skinny ect... So about a month later I decide I wanted to try it. went to the doc he wrote the sript and started me off.

Read the instructions and the first thing was keep smoking... I said ok I have no problem there..LOL take 1 pill once a day for a week then stop. Hmmm ok getting leary here. Sounds like a cold turkey thing to me. But I tried and did ok for the first few hours of the second week....
Still taking one pill a day but I decided I was going to do my bvest not to smoke but if i felt i really needed on then i had one. Then I started week 3 2 pills a day. At this point i decide it was more of a habit than a want one. So I strecthed it out more. this is when they started tasting bad but not bad enough cuz i still smoked em. Now week four comes and I smoked the last cigarette in the pack and I said -I-m not buying any more!!!!- And I didn-t..... Then about a month later had a stressful day and borrowed one... Went home with my head hangin and told my very supportive wife I failed. She didn-t care she was happy i made it a month without a cigarette. She just said its ok stay on the bike a continue riding. So I got up the next day determined I would go longer. I made it month damn it I can go longer. I took my Chantix for 90 days like the doc said to and come this April it will have been 2 years without a smoke for me.

I seriously believe that my friend and Chantix saved my life and helped me quit. Without ether one I may have never heard of it. So each year I plan on sending my frined flowers and athank yoiu for saving my life.

It worked for me and it will work for you to. Good luck a I-ll be praying for you!
My dad was a smoker for about 15 or so years and he actually quit smoking on a bet with his brother to see who can not smoke the longest . Though my dad quit by using the nicotine patch i don-t know which one , though he was kinda grumpy for like a month or so and about a year later he-s fine . He was tempted to smoke one time , and i had to tell him to stop . So i-m sure your family will support your decision . My grandfather has tried to quit for 30 years and he can-t ,he started to smoke at the age of 10(he got cigarettes from his older friends) and he-s 56 now . He has tried everything and i told him why can-t he quit ? He said that smoking to him is like drinking water and he just simply can-t .
If I were were a smoker trying to quit, my strategy would not be to find the easiest way possible. Rather, it would be to quit cold-turkey, endure all withdrawal symptoms no matter what, suffer for a couple weeks, and make a recovery.

After all, if quitting is super-easy, you might be tempted to start smoking again. You can always quit later! But if quitting is painful and difficult, yet you manage to endure it, it will be a significant achievement you won-t want to throw away by starting again.

PS: Drink plenty of water and take vitamins regularly during withdrawal. Do not be tempted to substitute another drug (such as caffeine or diet pills) for the nicotine you-re missing.
Yes i had succesfully quitted smoking after smoking for 8 years and this happend because of my will power i took one packet of cigrate and decided this is going to be my last packet and no more will be there here after,i smoked one because i was knowing this is going to last,u should know that withdrawal symtoms are extremely bad they can make scream the walls down or pull out the hair, but keep the control on ur self and try chewing gums when ever u feel the addiction, honestly saying this had worked for me,its been over an month since i smoked,i mean the addiction is gone and feeling like heaven,Best of luck.

Do I need to have a degree to start up a service which helps people quit smoking? -

I want to start up a business that helps people stop smoking. Do I need a degree? and is there a course that teaches people how to help people quit smoking?
I have no idea why you would need a college degree to start a business. You-ll need a lawyer to write up a good disclaimer, for those who can-t quit smoking. Doctors prescribe medications to help people quit, and that-s not a guaranteed.
Did you used to smoke and you want to share with others what worked for you?
generally to own your own business you need a masters or associates degree in business and management and it would be very rare that youd be able to find a course to help people quit smoking nor would i think it would be considered as college credit. on the other hand, business is not a good field to get a degree in at the moment. i know 3 people with degrees in business, 2 have an associates degree and 1 has a masters degree in business and they all are working at chili-s as bartenders because the economy-s so bad. but i-m sure it-ll get better by the time you get a degree.
No but you-ve got to have some credentials.

How hard is it to quit smoking, and what is the best way to do so/? -

I was just wondering. No, I don-t smoke, but nobody believes it when you say that anyway...please be nice. I-m asking this on behalf a relative who has no idea what I-m doing.
Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to break. In my experience as a physician, I-ve seen higher success rates from alcoholics and drug addicts. I think the reason is that smoking involves two forms of dependency.

The first is the addiction to nicotine. Nicotine binds to areas of the brain that are associated with -pleasure centers.- These areas are very active during orgasms. If one places an electrode in a similar area of a rat-s brain, the rat can be trained to push a button to stimulate that electrode. If given that opportunity, the rat will continually push that button. If you place such a rat in a cage with two platforms separated by an electrified grid, and one platform place food and water and the other platform place the rat, no matter how hungry or how thirsty the rat is it will not cross that electrified grid to get to the food or water. But if you place the button for the electrode it will cross that grid, willingly receive those shocks, in order to push the button.

Smokers are much like that rat, in that you know full well the hazards of smoking and yet you continue to smoke. This was demonstrated over 10 years ago in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzogovina, when during the height of the seige by Serbs, with bombs going off in the streets and snipers on the rooftops, people still waited in the open in lines over a couple of blocks long, to receive their tobacco ration. Another story is that of a man who was a survivor of the concentration camps who saw the depths that people would go through to obtain tobacco, even more than they would go through for food or water. This man vowed that if he survived he would become a tobacco seller because there would always be people to buy his products. After being liberated, he moved to California where he opened the first of what turned out to be a string of tobacco shops and became a multi-millionaire. Note that he never ever smoked a cigarette, cigar or pipe his whole life.

The second dependency involves all of the subconscious habits associated with smoking: Think about how you reach into the pack of cigarettes in your pocket, your purse or besides your computer, pull that cigarette out and unconsciously light it. It-s like driving a car. Do you actually consciously pay attention to how much torque you need to turn the key in the ignition, how much pressure to apply to the gas or brake pedal, how many degrees of rotation to turn the steering wheel? If you did, you-d be unable to pay attention to the road and would get yourself in an accident. Yet try to break the routine. If I try to even drive my car from the garage into the driveway and I don-t have my seatbelt around me, I feel very uncomfortable, yet while driving I-m unaware of the belt around me. Our brain constantly filters out a myriad of incoming sensory inputs. Consider this: until I brought it up, you were unaware of the sensation of the fabric of your jeans against your thighs. But now you are and in a few seconds you will go back to ignoring that sensation.

When you try to stop smoking you are changing the routine of your life and you will feel uncomfortable for a few days. That may not be so bad, except you are also trying to withdraw from a very addictive substance.

The strategies for stopping smoking try to reduce the impact of these dependencies. Certainly cold turkey is associated with one of the highest long-term success rates, but few people are truly successful at this. Nicotine replacement systems, such as the gum, the patches and the inhalers, allow you to get over the habits associated with smoking while delivering nicotine in a much safer manner. Once you feel comfortable not smoking, then you can systematically withdraw from the nicotine. The other method involves the use of buproprion sustained-release, an antidepressant that blocks the addictive nature of nicotine. When successful, the user of buproprion no longer feels the desire to smoke because they no longer receive the same -thrill- from smoking. The smoker quits because there is no enjoyment in smoking outside of its ability to efficiently deliver nicotine to your brain.

All strategies for smoking cessation should be combined with active counselling. When you do stop smoking, it is important to not even try to go back. I tell my patients that the first cigarette is the easiest to resist, but that the second is the most difficult. When you think, -What can it hurt?- to have just one cigarette, remember that one cigarette can put you right back into active smoking again.

Good luck in your efforts. In the end, if you fail a few times, don-t be discouraged. It takes an average of about 6 attempts for a smoker to be able to quite. Don-t give up until you are fully a non-smoker.

i don-t think there is a best way, but most people that i know, who quit smoking , did so suddenly after finding out they got ill
the best way is to just quit cold turkey
Try getting them to chew on a piece of garlic or garlic tablets before they light up. From then on when they get ready to smoke the cigarette will taste worse and worse to them making it easy to break the habit. Hope this helps and Good Luck!!!

What is the best way to quit smoking cold turkey? -

1. Don-t get rid of your cigarettes - if you-re quitting only because you don-t have any available then you haven-t really beaten the addiction. I quit several times when I got rid of all my cigarettes, only to start back at a weak moment when I had the chance to get more. The last time I quit with half a pack still in the house... and they are still in the house to this day, over 4 years later. Talk about some stale smokes!

2. Focus on how enslaved you are to the habit. Get ANGRY at how the addiction negatively affects your life, and get resolved to break this addiction and release the hold it has over you.

3. Stay BUSY. I went through my house cleaning everything with bleach. It kept me busy AND got the smoke smell out of the house.

4. Change your routine. If you smoke in the car, take different routes for awhile. If you smoke after eating, start eating at a different place. If you smoke at the computer, stay off the computer or move it to a different place.

The chemical addiction is actually the easy part to break. The hard part is the mental addiction / habit. I found I had so many -triggers- that made me want to smoke. Recognize the triggers and deal with them one at a time. Always remember that every craving and every hour you don-t smoke makes it that much easier. It DOES get easier, and before you know it you will be repulsed by the smell of it. Good luck! You can do this!
Don-t buy anymore cigarettes.
i smoke and my bf smoked for years but he quit 2 months ago cold turkey i being selfish person that i am cant help but to smoke around him at times on accident but thank god he didnt relapse he usually sucks on something or chews gum sometimes walks around with a toothpick in his mouth if your trying to quit i say good luck and hope this helps!
LOL, well cold turkey means COLD TURKEY, no help or substitutes at all. Just stop, don-t buy cigarettes. If what you are asking is how to cope after stopping cold turkey, I can-t help you I am a smoker myself.
look at xrays of the lungs of smokers and people who has cancer. then try to stop buying cigarettes or any type of tobacco products. Stay away from people who smoke, because second hand smoke will kill you also.......
To quit smoking cold turkey, first of all you really need to really want to quit and secondly, you need to stay away from other smokers. Being around people that smoke makes it nearly impossible. Lastly, keep your mind and body occupied on anything but smoking.
pretend you are smoking pretzel sticks. it-ll keep the tendency to want to smoke in check (and it-s cheaper)
I smoked for 28+/- years. I have been nicotine free for almost 11 yrs( Dec, 1). After attempting with many methods, I took a week and cut out the automatic cigarettes. That was the first one in the morning with my coffee, the one right after a meal or sex, the one I always lit up when I got in my truck when going somewhere, and the last one just before bed. I set the date when I was going to quit and then I told myself every time I craved a cigarette, - Don, you really love smoking and it has been such a big part of your life, but let-s not smoke one now.- I did that every time I craved a cigarette, and then would focus my attention on the task at hand. If I was not working or doing something I would focus on some goal or a good time in my life, and the craving would pass. Each time it became easier, and suddenly one day I realized that it was mid-afternoon I I had not even thought about a cigarette all day.
serve your turkey on christmas eve and give your cigarettes to your visitors. hehehe
Don-t buy any more ciggs and don-t be around people who smoke!!!!! It-s not easy but good luck!!!!!!!!!!!
Different people have different ways of quitting, you just have to try it first to find out. However, not many people could do it cold turkey. There will be acute withdrawal symptoms depending on your level of addiction. IF you do not succeed, I suggest an alternative, use postponing method. It works for most of my friends. Smoking is based on addiction AND habit. This method will be more effective as the withdrawal lessens as you slowly changed your habit. eg. if you smoke 20 sticks a day on every hour. the first week start smoking at 9 am instead of 8am. week by week progress and postpone hour by hour. 10am, 11 am 12 noon etc... your body will adjust to the timing. Initially, treat it as a challenge soon you will find that there is no urge to smoke in the morning, than afternoon and soon you will give up after having the last week of night puff. hope it helps you.

i did it .here is what i did and it took a lot of effort and -some tricks-.Withdrawls are the worst thing i ever went through. So to deal with that ,I did this.buy a carton of the cheepest -smokes-you can. Then I took a pack, and in each smoke i poked a -stick pin -in the filter.First pack gets 2 pick holes, and then the next pack ,open the pack take the smokes all out and -pick 3 holes-in each filter and keep doing this. You still get the feeling of smoking, but you will get -less and less-with each pack.then when you get to the last 5 packs in the carton ,keep increasing the amount of -holes- you poke in the filters and after that carton is gone ,you will get less nicitone and less ,till the nicitone will be outta you.But like i said the with drawls are the worst .like i said it worked for me.i tried medicin.welbutrim, the patches.you name it i tried it .nothing but -my trick-worked .try it it couldnt hurt.and i-ll add this when you are going through the withdrawls, either stay away from people or explane that you are trying to quit smoking and say your sorry for loosing it,cause you will loose it,your patience and the shakes, the headaches, sick to your stomach, all of it.good luck
I found that the patch was pretty good, and regular gum. Nicorette tasted bad to me, but the gum gives you the oral fixation and the patch lessens the craving.
Real, total and final, absolute and complete determination to quit smoking.

I had absolutely no trouble when I bought my house.

Ok, the withdrawal was hell.

But to lose a house because of an expensive and retarded habit?

Just..don-t... smoke. Be strong.
Get locked up in a non smoking jail for a long period of time
If I were quitting the best way would be to put me in a straight jacket! LOL

Nicotine gum, patches work okay. I usually wore the patch on my hip/cheek area. It always came loose by the end of day on my arm. I read on here the other day that the foot was actually a good place, too. Haven-t tried that.

You really have to be committed mentally for any of them to work, I think. The third day is always the hardest for me to quit, so be prepared and don-t buy any cigs or have any temptation around. I wish you the best.
Champix. By prescription I found it the thing that worked for me. You still will have to WANT to give up though. Nothing will work if you dont try your hardest. Remember also...when you give up smoking you are -giving up- nothing. It is not worth doing..but you have heard all of that before. When you stop call yourself a -smoker that chooses not to smoke- that way you wont be tempted to just -have one- and be back on the trail again. Good luck x
I took a carton of cigarettes and smoked them one after the other. If you-re a heavy smoker do 2 cartons. If you vomit, keep on smoking. I did it late at night. Next morning I woke up and had to clean the house. I couldn-t stand the smell of cigarettes for 10 years. I still don-t like the smell. I-ve never smoked since.
brush your teeth whenever you want a smoke.

it-s another hand to mouth habit that substitutes the smoking...it actually helped
I quit smoking in US Army Basic Training. It wasn-t that hard because I was very busy being yelled at and made to do pushups.
The three day rule if you don-t smoke for 3 days then you-ll be fine
never start in the first place....but my bf used that patch thing and it helped
never quit quitting.
Pleasing Jehovah God by not wanting to smoke anymore. I used no cessation aids just will alone.
I figured it would be the fastest way to beating the addiction.
chew gum everyday
drink Espresso when i fell like smoking
got sick....quit smoking.....havent gone back...chew gum, get in shape, run

I want to quit smoking but I always seem to fail! Does anybody have any tips? -

I want to quit smoking to save money and for the sake of my health but every time I give up i get paranoid and angry at the slightest thing! I think half of it is all in my head, I convince myself that life is not worth living without smoking.
Any ideas, tips or suggestions?
Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.
I gave up August, first 3 days are the worst. then 2 weeks is kina tough, but if you get over them 3 days without lighting up, you will feel great.
Good luck. Theres stuff on my 360 that helped me quit. xxx

Yes,I found using 2 patches instead of 1 worked for me.I stuck them over my eyes so I couldn-t find my cigarettes!
Alan Carr-s book Easy Way to stop Smoking worked for me on the second reading. I-d tried patches and cold turkey a few times as well. Important that you also want to stop or else you-ll be trying because you think you should, not because you want to.
Try Allen Carr-s book The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It really works. He also runs workshops which you can attend.
I quit in june this year an still have not had one! i went cold turkey the worse bit is the first 3 days! after that the cravins get less day by day! Patchs are to expensive an u cant get them free on the NHS just at a knocked down price!
The way i see it is that tabacco not as addictive as heroin! you dont need a substitue!
I packed in 18 yrs ago, I did not smoke while driving, or at work, or while asleep so I worked it out logically, seeing that I did not smoke for 75% of the day why bother at all, and I went cold turkey. No problem at all, no withdrawal symptoms, and have never desired a cigarette since (no lie) I have my sense of taste and smell back, just overall better health etc. And I cannot stand the smell of the smoke either in pubs or on peoples clothing. Give a real go and mean it, it is the only way.
This is how I did it 11 years ago. I haven-t smoked since then, and it wasn-t easy to begin with, but hey, I-m still of -em.

1. Decide you want to stop, and do it at the start of a new day - then STOP.
2. Recognise it won-t feel nice. This will go away. Recognise that you-ll still want them. This doesn-t go away EVER. Don-t lose hope - read on.
3. Do NOT use the phrase -I-m giving up smoking.- This may sound odd, because to everyone else this is exactly what you-re doing. In fact what you are doing is -Choosing not to smoke again-.
4. Ask your friends and family not to try and tempt you. You really don-t need some jerk saying -Go on, just this one, it won-t make a difference!- It will, so try and avoid these people if they don-t stop it.
5. Every time you feel the urge to smoke, remind yourself that you-re -Choosing not to smoke again-. Just like in Alcoholics Anonymous, you-re dealing with an addiction; don-t say you aren-t because fags will make you just as dead as booze.
6. Take one day at a time. Every day is a new one in which you could smoke, but you-ve chosen not to. Remind yourself of this every day - it may seem boring to start with, but it becomes automatic after about four weeks, which is the major breaking point in your metabolic fightback.
7. Eat sensibly - don-t snack to make up for not smoking. I didn-t and put two stone on. This is important because nicotine is an appetite suppresant, so you-ll have to fight yourself not to push the other animals away from the watering hole, if you get my meaning.
8. Congratulate yourself every day you don-t light one up, because it is a victory! You are keeping yourself alive after all, and if you did smoke 20 B-H per day, you save around £1800 a year which is the price of a really decent mountain bike to get fit on!

The -paranoia and anger- stuff is your brain rebalancing it-s chemical makeup (probably from the cyanide derivatives added to your regular smokes!), and tobacco companies want these bad feelings to happen. You get the shakes, you think -A smoke would calm my nerves- and hey presto! You-re a smoker again!

AT THIS POINT, REMEMBER - YOU-VE CHOSEN NOT TO SMOKE, SO YOU-VE GOT THE STRONG HAND ON THIS GAME.

One of my closest mates did this exact method, and is still off them after 13 months. Don-t buy the patches, because they don-t work without the willpower. If you have the willpower, you don-t need the patches. The bottom line is, choosing not to smoke is not just a way of saving some money, it a way of living longer and being able to run around the garden with your kids/relatives/naked partner at midnight, instead of watching from a wheelchair.

Most of all, do it tomorrow morning, and I wish you all the luck and strength in the world.
Im assuming you have tried the gums, patches, etc.

Have you considered Zyabn? Its a prescription only medication, you need to see your doctor to check if its suitable for you as it has side effects, but its wonderful.

It basically stops the craving signal being sent from your brain.

Iused Zyabn, it worked well. I took two tablets for 11 days, during which time I continued smoking, then on day 12 I quit. The night before I chucked out all the ashtrays and lighters etc and when I woke up on day 12, I got up, showered, had breakfast, did some housework, popped to the shops for milk, came back, played on the PS2, made lunch, and only then realised I hadnt wanted or even thought about having a ciggie.

It definitely worked for me, it stops the brain from receiving the -craving- signals, and even though I thought about fags after, i didnt get the physical craving I did beforehand. I continued taking the tablets for about 3 months after, i had one slip up when I was drunk, but quit smoking.

In the past ive tried patches, gum, inhalators, lozenges, but they all still contain nicotine, so i was still having the drug in my system.

With Zyban, its not nicotine based at all. It started out as an anti-depressant, but people were still depressed on it, but a lot of people reported that they had packed in smoking. So they did some research and remarketed it is as a giving up smoking aid.

It is a strong drug, and cannot be taken with a lot of other mediciations, it also cannot be taken if you have a history of severe migraines, epilepsy, fits, seizures or head trauma.

Have a good look at the information available online, then go to your GP and talk to him.

You may read some scare stories about people dying after taking it, but the people that died were ill anyway, and the Zyban interacted with their medication, which i why doctors now know to be careful when taking it with other drugs.

All in all, I found it safe, reliable, effective and an absolute life saver.

lozz xx
my boyfriend gave it up instantly after reading the Allen Carr book. He was smoking about 12 a day and went straight off them all successfully. Only effects were weight gain.Good luck trying to give them up.
lifes to short to worry about if you want to stop stop i did after 22 years of smoking,it was me that wanted to stop for myself thats all you can do no tips just do it for yourself and give yourself a chance of a better life good luck and i wish you will.
I-ve tried a coupla times in the past year or two. I-ve tried the patches, the gum and hypnotherapy. nothing worked for me yet.
i suspect that at the end of the day, you need a really GOOD reason to quit. I know people who-ve quit because it-s got too expensive, they-re having a baby, or they-re tired of coughing all the time.

It-s all in the mind, but I lost mine years ago.
each day start a little bit later, even if it is a minute or two. after you start just smoke as usual. after you make it to around lunch or early afternoon it will be easy
go to the doctors and get the patches on the NHS but to be honest it more to do with will power you will feel a hell of a lot better when you-ve given up and food taste like food again (i use to smoke 40 a day)good luck
Hey, I-m a smoker too and I understand completely where your coming from, I know its very hard if you get angry of upset but I find if I-m going through my stage of wanting to stop I get a pint of water and take a deep breath and drink the whole lot which usually gets rid of the craving, if that doesn-t work try eating oranges, apparently its a fantastic way of getting rid of that horrible craving! Good luck! x
I have been a smoker for over 40 years and have tried everything from will power, Gum, Patches, Hypnotism and acupuncture to no avial, that is untill I read Allan Carr-s book the easy way to give up smoking!!!! what a load of toot read a book that starts by telling you not to stop smoking till you have finished reading it? well I had to laugh for over 40 years I have been smoking and there is nothing you could tell me about how difficult it was to give up, that was till I read this wonderfull book and I havent smoked for over 2 years now!! try it
Me too! I-ve just bought Paul McKenna-s Stop Smoking DVD, I-m convinced it-s gonna work he knows all about the psyche that guy. Why don-t you try it! What have you got to lose apart from the price of the dvd or your life through lung cancer.
I am 51 years of age and hve been smoking since I was 16. Over the last few years I have tried to give up but always found it too difficult.I live abroad and when i was back in the UK earlier this year,i went to see a good friend of mine.he is the same age as me and had been smoking for the same amount of time as me.To my astonishment he had given up his 60 per day habit ,and hasn-t had a cigarrette for 18months.He recommended to me Allen Carr-s -how to give up smoking the easy way-I got the book,it is as boring as hell, but I havn-t had a cigerrette since the 18th August and not had any real cravings either. by the way, the book says percevere until the end of the book,I didn-t,I stopped smoking just over half way through.
Try it,and good luck.
I asked the same question a month ago and this answer helped me

i just pictured myself telling my wife that i had cancer and i was going to die because of smoke. that-s what cut our years short...smoke. sucks doesn-t it. kiss your family goodbye for smoke. hope this helps.
every time you eat brush your teeth and rinse with cinnamon flavored mouthwash.

drink a lot of pink grapefruit juice...

and PRAY!
Just say to yourself and anybody within earshot -when I-ve finished these, I-m not going to buy any more- - AND STICK TO IT ! ! ! I did just that, so work on the assumption that if THIS prat can do it, so can everybody else. ! After three days with that in mind you-ll start to remember you ever smoked. TRUE !
Quit buying.

You will have to beg for a smoke and soon everyone will force you to stop.
Keep smoking and put all your butts in a jar filled with a little water. You-ll soon see the colour of your lungs and this will be a sure turn off, it worked for me. Goodluck.
join a stop smoking group ask at your doctors about it
you shouldn-t of started to smoke in the first place what you gotta to is put all the horrible horrible nasty smelly murdering tobacco in the bin and put the rubbish/trash/garbage outside
Read the book -Easyway- by Alan Carr. I also bought the CDs. They were inexpensive and I found them to be the best thing ever. I have tried millions of times but have now been smoke free for 12 weeks. Its not as easy as he states, but it has been easier than ever before.

So very pleased somebody recommended these to me. Please try. You too may become a non-smoker. Word of caution though. I have felt ill since giving up. Think its a shock to my body.
I can tell you of a friend, a heavy smoker, who found HIS way to quit. He said if he had a cold, he found he couldn-t smoke. After the cold, which lasted perhaps a week, he felt he could resist returning to smoking as his body had, as it were, kicked the habit during the cold.
I urged him not to return to smoking after one cold, and he tried it. It worked, he stopped completely, with no side-effects or desire to smoke ever again.
It sounds strange, but if you should get a cold one day you might try it!
Allen Carrs book -The Easy Way to Stop Smoking-. Read it. It works .Really. I smoked for 15 years and quit easily. So have all my friends - none of us can beleive we went so long without readin it. This method works by tackling the brainwashing that cigarettes give us.... and I have never wanted a cigarette since reading it - yes, even in the pub :-)

Good luck. Oh! and at about 8 or 10 wuid it is the cheapest way to give up!
To quit, all you have to do is never have another smoke again. I only quit a couple of months ago and thought I-d get all the worrying withdrawal symptoms and cravings and start putting on weight. All I have noticed is I look healthier, I have become more confident as a person and I have more money than I used to. Every morning I wake up and take a deep breath and feel more oxygen entering my blood. I realise it is not an easy task but again, to stop smoking... all you have to do is never have another cigarette again.
I want to quit smoking but I always seem to fail! Does anybody have any tips? -

If i quit smoking will i put on weight? -

If i quit smoking will i put on weight? -

Apparently smoking keeps your weight down.
you may.. generally, people replace smoking with eating when they quit, thus the weight gain.. if you dont start to comfort eat when you quit, it should not be anything to worry about. besides, the health benefits of quitting smoking outweigh the possibility of 5 extra pounds by a long shot!
I personally think that smokers are used to having something in their mouth (cigarette) and eating helps control the urge to smoke...Try chewing gum
No way smoking is not good for you in any way
maybe... but even if so... I would rather be with someone with a few extra pounds than someone who smells and tastes like an ash tray!!!
No you gain weight from eating more not from not smoking.
NO! Because my daddy quit smoking a few months ago and hes fine. He did not put on more wieght.
well...yes and no. it depends on if you eat more..yea you-ll put on weight. if you watch what you eat and not eat so much no you wont gain weight!
I didn-t gain weight when I quit smoking, but the advice I give to others is that you need to replace smoking with something healthy, most notably working out, running, etc. That worked for me. Or get yourself a hobby that takes up some of that idle time when you used to smoke because there was nothing else to do.
Most likely!
probably.....

Any advice on ways to quit smoking?

Cheers
- just throw away your cigarettes and never smoke again (sort of hard...)
- ease off and gradually smoke less (eg 1 less every day or 1 every 12 hr instead of 6 hr) this is a little easier
- check out websites that have info about people who want to stop smoking/drinking
good luck :)
Try Chantix. It-s a prescription that really works. You take it for 3 months (12 weeks) They tell you to take it for 1 week and plan on a quit day during week 2. Don-t do it like that. You will gradually smoke less and less. By week 4-6, you just kind of stop. There were 6 of us at work on this and we all quit. I haven-t smoked for 4 months now and I don-t miss it at all. Good luck.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
You could investigate the nicorette activestop program developed by experts to help smokers to quit and you can find it in a web search for -nicorette activestop-.

I do feel good in a way, but Im now sick so quiting smoking hasnt really made me feel too much better yet. can anyone who quit smoking tell me the advantages?
You are still feeling blah because the last remnants of nicotine are fading from your body. You have to make it through the first months for the really bad withdrawal symptoms to disappear. It takes a full three months before you-ll feel totally human again. It sounds like you are quitting cold turkey [ie. no gum or patch]. The good news is that people who quit cold turkey and succeed generally are able to give it up forever
Keep the effort up!
You will soon start feeling better. You will be able to exercise longer, and little efforts will just be little efforts. Try controlling your anxiety, and not thinking too much about it. Good luck, and congratulations.
You can find quit smoking help here;
Smoking kills u quicker,fun doesnt
I smoked for 20 years and have quit for 5 years. You may not feel your health improving because its slow. You WILL notice it decline if you start smoking again. Your taste should be sharper and your sense of smell. You will definately smell better. Quitting is the hardest thing I ever did. Good job and good luck.
Hang in there
you-ll feel better soon just try to take your mind of smokes i 2 have been there

What is the safest way to quit smoking for someone with current risk of strokes ? -

I have been a smoker for 25 yrs, and have a history of severe neurological sarcoidosis.
The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements
A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.” Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

this method works for me ;)
My Dad smoked a non filtered cigarette for nearly 40 years and he quit COLD TURKEY. If you put your mind to it you can do it and there is no health risk in quiting. Good luck!!!!

I need help trying to get my mom to quit smoking, can some one help me? -

I need help trying to get my mom to quit smoking. She has ben smoking for long time. My dad siad she promised to stop when they got married but she still smoked.
I have tryed to talk to me mom about it but she just got upset and grounded me. I told her why she sould stop, like my frends one time saw a buch of segrets under my deck( she hides them there not very well) it was not cool when they saw it, she says she want me to vist her when she old but she may die when she-s young because of smoking and i told her a couple of other things, but like i said all she did was ground me and get mad at my dad. My dad has basicly given up after all this years. Im going to show her some pictures of a damiged lungs. i dont care if she grounds me i just want here to quit smoking. Can any one give me some advice?
i am so very sorry for you, i hate to tell you but your mom will only quit smoking when she wants to and when she is ready, i-m sorry, you sound so very worried about her an that is so sad, i really wish there was some miracle that i could give you to stop her but you know there isn-t, you sound way too young to be carrying this worry, maybe you should try to stop trying to get your mom to quit, i know it took me a long time to quit an my sons tried to get me to quit but i wouldn-t, i used a pill called Zyban, from the doctor, i was ready to quit an it-s been over a year now. good luck to you dear an God Bless!! please try not to worry so, ok.
JOIN THE CLUB. i-ve been trying to get my mom quit smokign for years and i dont- nwo what to do either if you find out contactme k thanksss
Sweetie, from an expert.....NO one will quit till they decide to do it.
You and your Dad-s naggin- only make her more upset and you cause her to be a -cheat- as she has to hide them.
Having already had your sayso...leave her be to her own choices.
You may find her trying to quit on her own............smile

You might tell her one day you know of a lady that was smoking outside the hospital when an older man in a wheelchair w/oxygen was being wheeled out. He stopped and looked at her, with much pain you could tell it took to say,-oh, if I could only tell you.-
They say smoking is harder to quit than herion, I can believe that beause I had quit smoking 2 times and it was so hard. Both with the patch and that nicotine gum. I think the gum was more helpful, but that is a person-s preference.
My Kids kept me busy and we started going for walks and playng video games. It kept my mind off it. Ask her to cut down instead of quit and maybe write it down on the calender how many she has. The nagging does get on a person-s nerves and makes you almost want to smoke more. Good luck
tell her to use nicatine patches, it helped me quit.
smoking is only a way rather smoke tobacoo th ere is also some other plants which are used as herbs and can use as smoking in ancient time for respiratory problem u cam email me at bhakt_rajput@rediffmail.com
My mom has been smoking since i was born. She smoke while she was prego with me. I want her to stop, but i know i cant get her to..You need to let your mom know how you are feeling about this. I have talked to my mom..No it didnt help her but she knows what im feeling about it!

Whats the easiest way to quit smoking weed? -

i need a answer from a real smoker none ov u smart a$$es that jus say -u shuddn smoke in the first place.- if anyone has tips on quitting or to make it easier plz help. IM QUITTING FOR THE ARMY RESERVE!!!
honestly just stop buying it...thats how my room mate did it. keep all ur cash in the bank so u have none on hand....good luck man
I personally don-t smoke weed, but i heard on the radio about these new magnets that you can put on your ears that make you crave it less. You could also be motivated by wanting to reach your goal of making it into the army reserve. Honestly, you-ll feel like crap for almost a month. Just stay positive, and remember that quiting is for the better.
Hope i helped!(:
Just try to use some good substitute.. I know about nicotine chewing gum that help in giving up smoking. My friend used them and successfully quit smoking. most of the time you can ask for a free sample. if you find them good you can continue.
I have been smoking weed for many years. Tried to quit smoking weed several times but always gave up.

But last few months I have managed to quit smoking weed withour going back. Found this book very useful.
use money on things you need so in the end...you wont have money to buy it. just stop smoking. i used to smoke cigs and easily stopped. i know its a bit different but just stop lol.

dont tell me about CHANTIX
I experimented with it, and with the other nicotine replacement products. The one that I ended up finding most useful was the Commit nicotine lozenges, but your mileage may vary -- I suggest you try them until you find the one that works for you.
i used it for four weeks and it helped me stop.
it give a spuprisingly good dose of nicotine and allows you to satisfy your hand-to -mouth habit.

use it - i enjoyed using it in restaurants, bars and at home!

After I quit smoking I gained about 30 lbs. Can anyone recommend a good over the counter appetite suppressant? -

Weight gain after smoking.
you don-t really need to take a suppressant . . . you only have to stop eating to replace the cigarettes . . . you are going thru the -need to do something with the mouth- . . . try chewing on straws, gum, natural wood golf tees - things like this give your mouth and something to do other than putting food in your mouth . . . drink more water and walk each day if you can to help give your mind something else to focus on too . . . if you still want to go on a suppressant, ask the pharmacist at the drug store to suggest the best one on the market today
it-s not your appetite that-s out of wack it-s your metabolism. Smoking increases your metabolism so just get some a supplement that does the same thing. There are so many out there though I couldn-t recommend one. Talk to a pharmacist.
I quit smoking recently, 2 weeks ago. I also have had to deal with changing my own metabolism. (trust me, the drug companies will not help you with your metabolism, and their products are just a waste of money!) I was 145 pounds, which is quite a lot for 5-1, and now i am 110 pounds. anyway, here is my advice:

if you switch to a healthy diet the temptation to over-indulge will be much less. if someone snacks on vegetables they can pretty much eat as many as they want until they feel like they cant eat anymore, because they are simply eating for nurishment/antioxidants, where as eating junk food fills you up with calories, but not a full stomach. Even if you can get away with a cookie or two a day and not noticing any weight gain, Junkfood is Never healthy to eat. (chances are you could eat a mango or a delicious cherry instead and feel the same amout of satisfaction from it than you would the cookie!) Fast food is physically addictive.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/270714…

If you are in a situation where you must eat fast food, Subway or Quiznos is best. Skip the ranch.

According to the USDA and the United Nations, using an acre of land to raise cattle will yeild 20 lbs. of usable protein. What you may not realize is that an acre will also yield 356 pounds of protein if soybeans are grown instead. (we COULD solve world hunger if we wanted to) Land, water, and resources that could be used for our human consumption is being instead used to grow crops that feed and fatten live stock for wealthy America and Europe. If everyone on earth recieved 25 percent of their calories from animal products 3.2 billion could be fed. If you drop that figure to 15 that would mean 4.2 billion could be fed. (Remember, there are roughly 6.3 billion people on Earth) If everyone went vegan everyone would have more than enough food.
Now, If you really need help losing your appetite watch this video at
http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?…

It was enough to make me go vegan, and now I am much healthier because of it.

THE MEAT INDUSTRY:
Not only does the meat industry make the animals lives a living hell, it also pollutes our air and water and turns once-fertile land barren and dead. These wealthy companies will try to influence you through messages in the media, some obvious and others subliminal. In turn, they give you food has been brutally slaughtered, (the government doesnt have time to enforce all of the health code regulations,) pumped with hormones, and will probably give you heart disease. They are simply made to convince you to increase your use of animal products. If they suceed, they will increase their profits at the expense of further poverty, hunger, and environemtal degredation, moving their factory farms to low-income nations.
You can get free starter kits at
http://veganpeace.com/links/vegan_starti…

Of course, i am not trying to force you to go vegan. what this comes down to, is this: it is simply your choice!

There are many other pleasures in life other than smoking cigarettes, and you can not fill the void with food either...
Light some insence, if they help you relax, Meditate. Figure out what truly makes you happy in life!

(Of course I don-t know you personally, so i say this to everyone really...)

Smoking does not make you look cool!
Smoking is not a part of your character, either! You have character without cigarettes, and you will need to tell yourself that frequently if you are quitting and are addicted to cigarettes. Being addicted is no way to live, so dont let it rule your life. You will be much happier once you have kicked the habbit! So, congradulations on the progress you-ve made so far.

In the long run, a good metabolism can not be achieved with pills, you just have to exercise.
30lbs isn-t a huge amount of weight and alot women have found dat when they gain weight guyspay more atteion 2 them... and curves r comin bck monroe was a size 20 (uk) and i think guys have relised that stick thin isn-t sxy... i meen take away dapaddedbra i might as well b a guys body...!!
Sorry on this planet nothing is more contra-weight efficient then cigarettes. They kill you slowly, but not as fast as other suppressants and, chemicals.
Maybe some people will judge me for my answer, but I now someone who is dieing because of a drastic diet as we speak. She was so beautiful before, but she exaggerated her “weight problem“. Right now she is in a hospital, and she lost some teeth because they tried to feed her by force, and she still won’t eat. Don’t ever take suppressants, or hold you’re self back from eating. Just make up a healthy diet and go on with you’re life!
Speeds. But I wouldn-t advise it.

I had 3 cigs. as i was so anxious and upset. it is like I have become depressed almost overnight. Am I going to be a total failure, and advise i would appreiciate. I dont want to have a smoke here and a smoke there cause I dont I wont quite.
How long will these anxious feelings last? And has anyone else felt this way?
What is Champix? I smoked for 5 years and it-s been 6 years since I quit. The anxious feelings will go on and off for about 2 months. It just takes time that-s all, you-ll be OK very soon.

Some suggestions though. I would start taking care of yourself very well by eating good and getting fresh air. I suggest the blood type diet. Lots of fresh raw vegetables. The better you take care of yourself the easier it is going to be.
Good luck with the Chantix.I know numerous people who were successful at quiting using the drug.Be strong.........you can do it.
You are only a failure if you never try. When you feel anxious, take a little walk and enjoy all the smells of spring:)Take all the money you would have spent on cigarettes and put it into a savings account and then take a nice little vacation or by a new wardrobe.Best of Luck:)

What do you Suggest doing to quit smoking? -

What do you Suggest doing to quit smoking? -

A few years ago, I was smoking enough to the point of coughing up blood every now and then. That did it for me.
Just think about the disease it can cause (google a pic of a cancerous lung), having ashtray breath and yellow teeth, spending money on something that-s basically killing you slowly.
Hope that helps.
Acupuncture may be something for you to consider as an alternative treatment method that can deal with both the physical and the emotional effects of nicotine addiction whenever you quit. Acupuncture may seem like a strange alternative treatment option, but it actually works for many people. There are a lot of smokers who have tried many other methods unsuccessfully and find that acupuncture is the only method that will work in aiding them to quit smoking successfully with ease and finality.
I stayed mostly in bed as much as I could for a week. I figured I had a type of sickness so I-d act like it. That helped a lot. Took away the temptation and I was not fun to be around anyway. After that, if I were out driving and had an urge to buy cigarettes, I-d go into a drug store. walk around the inside of the store and leave and drive away. It was just long enough to get past the urge. I once heard on the news about a man who quit smoking by chaining himself to his sofa for a month!
try not buying them!

Have you tried to quit smoking hundreds of times? -

Did you finally succeed? How-d you do it? What was different about the last time?
I wouldn-t say that I tried to quit 100-s of times, but I did give it a very good shot several times. The first time I went to a program call Smoke Enders. It was very good and I quit smoking for about six months. But I let stresses get the better of me and picked up the cigarettes again.

Then a couple years later I tried Wellbutrin and that never worked at all for me. Then I tried the patch and that was worthless. I also tried the gum, but that didn-t work either, the taste was so bad, I lit a cigarette to get rid of the taste.

One morning I woke up and said to myself I really want to quit smoking, I had been limiting my cigarettes up to this point to less than a pack a day for several years. I always just bought a pack, and if I ran out by 3 PM that was it for the day until the next morning on the way to work I would pick up my daily pack.

Anyway, that morning I decided that I was going to quit smoking. That was over seven years ago, and I have not had a cigarette since then. Oh I will admit there have been times when I have really had cravings, but I never gave into temptation. I used breathing and changing my focus, but I did it.

I am a college graduate and of all the things I have accomplished in my life time, I am the most proud of having quit smoking because I can honestly say up until I was mentally prepared to do so, it was the most difficult thing I have ever done.

If you are thinking of quiting, you won-t be successful with any program until you are mentally prepared to quit. Good luck and God Bless.

Edit: You ask what was different the actual commitment and being mentally ready to do so. Doing it for the right reason, me not because of society.
i-ve never dedicated my life to smokes
No.
I had tried to quit because I knew I should but I didn-t actually want to, I really kind of liked it. I had my coffee routine, driving to work routine, hanging out in the evening routine and of course the cocktail routine...and they all centered around smoking. I started realizing some negatives comments were coming my way...you smell like cigarettes, I bet you don-t exercise, your whole house stinks. So I went to an acupuncturist, and then a herbalist, and then a hypnotist...nothing worked. And then there was this gal at work who-d been trying to get pregnant and while joining us at the smokers door said she-d quit when she conceived. Well she didn-t quit, and I watched her belly grow while she stood there smoking with us day after day. See I-d always said I-d quit when I got pregnant too...and it scared me that maybe I-d choose to put smoking above my baby-s health, then it occurred to me I-d already put it above my own. I kid you not the very next morning I got up and never smoked again, no planning at all, I just did it. That was seventeen years ago.
I did man, must have been 20 or 30 times. Turns out, I didnt smoke. So I figured, hey, to quit I need to start right?...Now I-m hooked.

It-s just a form of acupuncture, so some people will say -yes it helped me-, some will say -it didn-t work-.

In the end smokers have to take responsibility for the fact they are addicted and the only thing that-s really going to work is will-power.

Has anyone successfully quit smoking cigarettes after smoking for a long time? -

I am 26 and have been smoking since I was 13. I have periods where I quit for a few months and even once I quit for 2 years. I want to quit for good. I-d like to hear from anyone who used to smoke for a long time and is now quit and what their secrets are. I would appreciate it very much! Thanks!
I quit -cold turkey- for over 9 years, after having smoked for about 14 years. About five years ago, my mom broke her neck, and I started smoking again from all of the stress! She never was able to get out of bed again, and passed away from lung cancer about 2 1/2 years ago. I quit again yesterday, -cold turkey-, on what would have been my mom-s birthday! This time forever! My secret is willpower, pure and simple. No tricks, no gimmicks, no gum, no patches. You have it within yourself, you just have to trust in yourself to bring it out.
I sucked on lollipops and ATE toothpicks (the peppermint ones).
Yes, I bit off little pieces, chewed them for awhile and swallowed them. I smoked for thirteen years. I do cheat occasionally (like when my baby was in the hospital) but I always feel like crap afterwards. It-s been five years since I quit, but only 2 1/2 months since my last smoke.

They also make these things that look like plastic cigarettes that you can suck on. Or try Zyban, it helps to ease the tension and anxiety.

Good luck.
I smoked on and off from 11-13, then steadily till 31. I quit a few times, but started back. This time, I have been quit for 18 months, and swear never to return to them. Everytime I think about starting again, I think about how hard it was to quit and how much better I feel now. When I smoked, I couldn-t run 1 mile, now I-m doing my first 10k (6.2 miles). I could never do that if I still smoked. Think about how much healthier you will be without the cigarettes. That-s what worked for me.
I SMOKED FOR 20 YEARS - GOT BRONCHITIS (?) AND COULDN-T INHALE THE SMOKE - PUT CIGS AWAY TILL I GOT BETTER AND I NEVER WENT BACK TO THEM -HOWEVER, I DID KEEP MY LAST UNOPENED PACK FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS BEFORE I TOSSED IT. GOOD LUCK!
Yes, I have quit. You just don-t allow yourself to smoke. You just don-t do it anymore. You can do it with Gods help. Just keep telling yourself, I am better than this, smoking stinks, it-s expensive, it-s unhealthy, - I will not do it anymore.

I quit 21 yrs. ago. By the way that was on December 11, 1985. I just got up one morning smoking 3 cigs before I even got out of bed - decided, that-s it, I quit! I still have the urge though and I know if I ever smoke even one, I-ll be hooked again. I-m 47 now.

Tip: Best way to quit is -Cold Turkey.- Forget all the patches - all that other crap, just do it.

Paul
Stopping smoking can be very difficult.
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
I have been smoking 33 years and quitting for 30 good luck try gum hypnotism drawing on a straw whatever crutch you may need to beat it good luck.My grand mother quit by becomming very religious but dies of thyroid cancer after beating breast cancer.
I quit. Like you, I started in my early teens, and by the time I was in my mid to late 20s, I wanted to quit. I used gum, not the kind for smokers, just regular sugar-free gum, and I kept it in my mouth all the time. My biggest problem was at bars. I basically had to stop going. It really took me about 3 years from the time I made up my mind. I made myself cut back to 2 cigarettes a day, and I did that for about a year, then I-d smoke only on the weekends, 2 a day, then finally, I ended up smoking only occassionally the last year, maybe twice a month, until it finally started disgusting me to smell it.

I feel for you because it-s an aweful addiction. Fortunately, the physical addition ends in only 3-4 days cold turkey; it-s the psychological part that-s so hard. Good luck. You CAN do this.
Try organic cocoa beans in a banana smoothie.

It worked for my roommate who smoked for twenty-five years. He has not smoked tobacco in over a year.

Of course he was hooked on the smoothies for a few months. (But that might be because of all the pot he smokes.)

Good Health to You,

P.S. I just saw a site for laser therapy to stop smoking, very interesting. Freedom Laser Therapy...

Why is it so hard to quit smoking? -

Why is it so hard to quit smoking? -

Smokers please explain to someone who has never smoked why it is so hard to quit. I-m always trying to convince my uncle to quit but he says it is too difficult.

What makes it so hard and what does it feel like when you can-t have a cigarette and you need to smoke?
Unfortunately, it-s not just the nicotine. It-s genetics. That-s why some people can quit easily and others suffer. -A study conducted by Jacqueline Vink, of the Free University of Amsterdam, used a database called the Netherlands Twin Register to analyse the smoking habits of twins. Her results, published in the Pharmacogenomics Journal, suggest that an individual-s degree of nicotine dependence, and even the number of cigarettes he smokes per day, are strongly genetically influenced.- (It has to do with getting a certain chromosome from both parents.)
because of all the nicotine in them i advise you to quit immediately
Nicotine is addictive, much like alcohol, cocaine, meth, heroin. When you are addicted to something, your body requires it in certain intervals. If you don-t oblige, you start going through withdrawals. These withdrawals are so unpleasant, you smoke to make them stop.

When you want to smoke and can-t: I would get nervous and edgy, sometimes angry.

I smoked for 17 years and was able to quit only with the help of a prescription, Chantix. It has some side affects, but I took it for three months and haven-t smoked in nearly a year now.

Quitting smoking is as hard as quitting anything else. An
alcoholic cannot simply stop drinking, a drug addict cannot simply stop using. It is a long road and they need all of the help they can get. But your uncle has to WANT to quit in order to make it happen.
it is not hard to quit...it-s a bad habit more than anything
you can suck on a lollipop, patches, tooth pick, pen/pencil to replace it......if you can stop smoking for 14days straight....it won-t be hard to quit.....b/c by then you-ll start to hate the smell and 2nd hand
Nicotine, a chemical in cigs, is very addictive and the reason many find it quite difficult to quit. You can do some research on that to find out more about nicotine addiction, it-s affects on the body, and perhaps understand better why quitting is harder for some than others.
I smoked for 15 years and finally quit this past new year-s. It hasn-t been easy but I have so much more energy and time to spend with my kids instead of finding time to smoke my next cigarette I-m playing with my kids and cleaning. I was a 2 pack a day smoker and when I was at work or somewhere where I couldn-t smoke I literally felt angry when I couldn-t have one. It is a serious addiction, worse than alcohol I think. I-m a happier, healthier person today. There are so many benefits. Show your uncle the website whyquit.com, I guarantee he-ll have a whole new outlook.

I just recently quit smoking, I am having shortness of breath, is this from quitting smoking,? chest xray cler? -

I just recently quit smoking, I am having shortness of breath, is this from quitting smoking,? chest xray cler? -

I had a chest xray and it was clear
If your chest xrays were clear I wouldn-t worry. Get checked for asthma.
Tex and Unpretty are right. Tobacco smoke paralyzes the cilia lining the airways, making them inefficient at pushing mucus, dead cells, carbon particles from pollution - smoking and microorganisms out of the lungs as nature intended.
When you stop smoking, these cilia begin to repair themselves and clear out years of gunk. Unfortunately, many people use this as an excuse to smoke again, e.g. -I felt worse when I quit-, so I-m glad you asked. This should subside in about 6 months, getting progressively better all the time. If not, then you may want to have pulmonary function tests to see if you have mild COPD or asthma.
I know it-s very hard to quit-you can be proud. Best of luck to you.
The human body is conditioned for certain repeated actions. since while smoking you in hale air and smoke with certain force this is missed when you quit smoking.
this is the cause of feeling breethlessnessin the early stages when you quit smoking.
The body will require some time to adjust.
So do not revert back to smoking.
Yes, quitting smoking will cause shortness of breath. Your lungs are trying to clear themselves of the toxins from the carcinogens that are in cigarettes. Your lungs are basically feeling tight because they are overworking to regenerate cells and -fix- any damage that smoking did to your lungs. This is how my doctor explained this to me when I quit for about a year eight years ago. That-s one of the biggest reasons I wish I had never started back up...I want to quit again, but remember that feeling. It was almost like a panic attack, and that coupled with the other physical symptoms...blah! It won-t last a long time...I believe it was about two weeks for me, but depending on the amount of time you smoked, it might be more or less.

I commend you on quitting and hope things go great for you! :)
Smoking has been known to cause emphysema which can cause shortness of breath. Yes, it can be attributed to quitting the habit. I should know, I suffered from the shortness of breath but eventually, my lungs cleared up.

Its also a natural reaction to the quitting. You-ll have itchy throat, as this is the body -cleaning- itself from all the nicotine intake you-ve been doing. Congratulations, and I hope you keep this up .. its a good choice .. it will bring your healthy results.

pack plenty of gums ... the urge to light one is still strong at this point, and when it does, the chewing gum comes in handy .. keeping the mouth busy and your mind away from sticking a cigarette into your mouth ..

clear chest e-ray? good for you so don-t ruin it.
Its probably from quitting. Whenever I got pregnant I quit smoking and I was always short of breath and had headaches. And I picked up smoking again now that my daughter is 16 months old (I-m trying to quit again) and I get shortness of breath if I don-t have a cigarette. I wouldn-t really worry too much about it.
It takes a couple of years for your lungs to repair the damage caused by smoking and to rid them of all the gunk that has built up.It is a normal process but takes time
cigarette is harmful for the lungs and it is illogic to say that you are getting SOB because of quitting it. it can be that you have got asthma or pneumonitis, better to contact a doctor

I plan to start drinking now that I can go to the pub and don-t come back smelling like a disgusting ashtray
Awwww so glad there are so many inconsiderate smokers! You guys every waited for a train and when everyone is trying to get on all huddled together the smokers are blowing smoke in your face and smoking like a steam train engine!
ders already a ban where i am in ireland
I find the £5 a packet more off-putting than the ban.
no chance i-m gonna smoke more,i will not bow down to these anti-smoking nazis.dont you people know that smoking makes you look cool and is actually good for you*cough cough*
We have the ban in Wales already and so many people have given up smoking,
Anyone that values their health............... :)
Me.....although I-m a smoker I-m all for being treated like a social pariah....if I go to a friend-s house and they don-t smoke I tend to not smoke, so I may aswell have a go at giving up. Everyone I know who smokes is planning to quit

Anybody else out there quit smoking recently? -

I haven-t smoked in 3 days myself. Just wondering if anyone else is fighting this addiction? If so, good luck all. [:
i quit 2 1/2 weeks ago, found out i am pregnant again and that was all the motivation i needed. not to say it still hasn-t been hard, but at least i have the motivation of my little one to keep me going smoke free!
I used to be a heavy smoker, then one day I decided I was ready to quit. Mainly because I had a sore throat and I just didn-t feel like smoking. Well one day turned into two which turned into three and now its been 2 months. I still crave a cigarette every now and then, and I do still smoke when I drink although I have cut back on that significantly too. But over all its almost like I-ve -forgotten- that I-m a smoker. It definitely gets easier the longer you go. Good luck and good for you!
I quit over a year ago. And by -quit- I mean I bought my last pack in August 2008. However, in January 2009, I had a couple of drags from a cigarette I bummed off someone. Since then, nothing. It is still tough, especially lately when so many things are stressing me out.

How can i stop overeating since i quit smoking cigarettes? -

ive quit smoking for almost 3 weeks and have gone from 140 to 172lb. thats 32 pounds in 3 weeks. i was very lean and i just lost control. i used to use cigarettes as an appetite supressor with my diet but now i find it very hard to stick to a diet. its like the 3rd day that i give in. dieting is extremely harder since i quit smoking. i feel lke i have to eat everything. im gaining hella fat and i need to nip it in the bud. any advice to get my fatass moving in the right direction instead of wineing on yahoo?
The next time you go grocery shopping, get Lean Cuisine or South Beach Diet stuff since they are supposed to be in Total Cholesterol. Stay away from candy and junk food and eat something that is high in fiber and low in Cholestrol - you will feel a lot better and you will lose weight in no time, and get out and excercise and possibly mean up with friends and/or relatives and walk with them.
Stay out of the kitchen. Put some toothpicks in your pocket and when you have the urge to put something in your mouth, use the toothpick.
try sucking on sun flower seeds it helps
eat alot of veggies to snack on

Any ideas on the best methods to quit smoking? -

Any ideas on the best methods to quit smoking? -

I work for a company that is going smoke-free in about 2 weeks, they have many options available. I would like opinions on the best ways to be successful in quitting.
Look into the new medication Chantix from Pfizer.

Extremely high success rate - 20% remain off cigarettes one year later.

http://www.chantix.com

my friend did the buddy system...like the would excercise togethre talk and when they had a craving they would call each other and talk it through...they-ve been smoke free for 4 years and are in the best shape ever....
Tell everybody you know about your decision.

Look at
http://www.theaones.com/answers/health/a…
for a complete explanation about the Trick To Quit Smoking
A study showed the best way to stop smoking is to quit cold turkey but that is real hard to do as you already know

But you asked for the best way.......

Also some people inhale a non light smoke and think that it is to help stop

or chew gum
What worked for me was 10 days in intensive care after they cut a cancerous tumor out of my throat along with my vocal cords and 50 lymph nodes.
First key is the real desire to quit... not because you-re being pressured - so be sure its what you want to do. I have just over a year of being quit and I found the patch to be really helpful and I also used a website (Quitnet) for support and motivation. Its sort of like a 12 step program for smokers :) When you join, you get a tracker which allows you to see your stats... how many days, hours, etc you-ve stayed quit, how much money you have saved based on your particular smoking habit, etc.
Good luck, hope you make it!
the gum worked for me..no withdrawl..best thing i ever did..but the most important factor is your desire to quit...you have to want to do it...
A nurse gave me this idea: Place the number of cigarettes you smoke in one day in a plastic zip bag. Each day, remove one cigarette. Follow this pattern until you reach 4 cigarettes a day and keep smoking 4 a day for one week. Then cut back to three a day for a week, etc. until you reach one cigarette a day for a week. The last day should be your last cigarette with no withdrawal symptoms. Good luck with whatever method you choose to quit. I hope it works for you.
don-t start would be my first advance, but since you already started, I would say consult your doctor to write a plan/schedule to help you fight your addiction.
Take Zyban pills and Nicotene patch combined .

Chew gum when you feel you need to smoke.
Exercise regularly.
I worked on the trials for Nicorrette gum when it first came out about 20 yrs ago.

Absolutely best method: Smoke really fast in a room full of smokers with no ventilation until you barf. This is called aversion therapy and it worked the best in our groups.

Okay, not into that? The next best method was the gum combined with supportive counseling. (We didn-t have the patch or Zyban then.)

Highest-correlated factor with successful quitting: Having your significant other put significant pressure on you to stop. This worked for me. My boyfriend, now hubby of 19 yrs, told me, -I will never marry a woman who smokes.- And I quit.
I think you need to start before 2 weeks so you don-t feel pressured to quit at the 11th hour. Start now so you can get through a lot of it before the ban goes into place.

There are many reasons why people smoke and you can address these by your choice of quit strategies. Talk to your doctor about going on Zyban which lessens withdrawal. They say you need to be on it for 2 weeks before it begins to help with withdrawal so you should start it now if you-re going to use it. You can also use the patch or gum in conjunction with this. A strong support network like quitnet is fantastic to bring you together with others who are experiencing the same thing.

You need to accept that quitting will be hard. Just because it is hard isn-t permission to give in. You have to ride it out through the tough part until it begins to fade and your body learns how to live and function without nicotine. Nicotine creates a very powerful addiction, and you need to attack it from all sides, in every way possible. ANYTHING is better than smoking and if nicotine replacement therapy helps you, throw everything available at the addiction. Nicotine replacement therapies double your chances of quitting, so they are really helpful to a quit. BTW, I tried the -aversion therapy- technique mentioned above. I got sick and slept (because of carbon monoxide poisoning probably). When I woke up in the morning... yep, I wanted to smoke again, so I lit up.

Makes lists of strategies to distract you when cravings hit. Drink lots of water, journal, exercise, have a bath, have a shower, read a book, read stories about people who died from lung cancer, reward yourself, go to bed, you need a list that contains a ton of different ways to help you cope.

You have to commit to not smoking NO MATTER WHAT. You will not die from the discomfort (although it may feel like it). And you have to make a promise to yourself (or to others) every day that you will not smoke.

It-s hard, but it-s doable. And you-ll be surprised how FANTASTIC it feels to be a non-smoker, once you get through the tough part. It is way better than you can ever imagine to no longer NEED to smoke.

from an ex-smoker!

My chest hurts because i just quit smoking how can i make it go away? -

i smoked about a pack every 5 days for about 4 years. and i have dry moth i stopped cold turkey
hang in there
your chest doesn-t hurt because you quit honey, it hurts because you were a smoker....
it will take awhile before the hurt clears up.

I know it-s hard - trust me.
drink lots of water - swish it around in your mouth.
drink juice too - if you are worried about calories, drink a sweetened drink powder or something.....ANYTHING to prevent you from lighting up again

blessings
You-re awesome--congratulations, long term I am sure your chest will thank you. Some people I know found that things like cinnamon candy helped them quit (I don-t really know why). I would try and find something else rewarding to do--eat somethings you really like, or get some new music, etc. It will take a little while for your body to get used to smoke free life.
The chest pain is not from a lack of smoking. Instead the smoking probably was the cause of the chest pain due to the blood vessels being constricted in your chest which causes a lack of oxygen which causes the pain. If you are suffering chest pains go to your medical provider.
Dont think about it and it will go away i promise
it will stop by itself with a little time. i smoked for 20 years and got to a point where my chest hurt almost constantly... after being stopped for a while it never does anymore..
It-s all natural. It-ll go away soon.
it is all focus, don-t focus on any of the habit that is craving your return, think out side the box give it to your doctor and say xannax, or Ny Quill or just do short breathes and stop trying for the big cigarette hits kind of feeling in your lungs, you have to remember the guy in you has been in to the habit for long time and you have to ignore the calls of desperation for the nico
Your chest probably hurts because you now have bronchititis aggravated by smoking.
The smoking probably masked the problem and you are only just now noticing it as you are looking for all those horrible symptoms everyone told you that you would experience when stopping smoking.
Your bronchi or lung pockets are inflammed and probably irritated from the nicotine that you have loaded up in your lungs over the years.
See a Dr who may want to give you a breathing test and prescribe an antibiotic.
I commend you on quitting cold turkey. I quit with the use of nicotine gum and that lasted 46 days. I restarted and made 30 days and started again. Today I am planning on quitting again, using up all of the nicotine gum that I have and finishing the process cold turkey because I have been told for years that this is the ONLY way to quit smoking.
The addiction to nicotine is comparable to the addiction of heroine and is a hard one to shake. . . .Hang tough and know that every day you have not smoking you have gained ground in beating the addiction.
Any chest pain should be talked about with a doctor.
You-re going to go through a period of withdrawal that will be very difficult. Stick with it and your symptoms should subside.

I-d recommend some deep breathing exercises to get your lungs into shape.

For example, take in mini puffs of air through your nose and count how many you can hold until your lungs are full, then let it out in mini puffs through your mouth, trying to DOUBLE the puffs out than in, but going until your lungs are almost completely empty (you should feel a sort of -squeeze- when they-re almost empty).

There are lots of books on deep breathing exercises, including one called Boost Your Metabolism which is great for lung exercises.

And... GOOD FOR YOU! Quitting smoking is a smart choice. Stick with it!

Jenni
www.paranormal-society.com
It will get worse before it gets better. Stick with it. Soon you will be feeling better.
Your body immediately starts healing after that last smoke. You will eventually feel better than you ever have in the last four years.
Stay hydrated! Try hard candies to keep your saliva glands working. As for the sore chest, there isn-t alot you can do for that. You could try a herbal expectorant, that will help your body let go of all the tar and junk you put in your lungs.

GOOD FOR YOU FOR QUITING!!! Thought I would add that :)

water on them accidently and I decided at that point i-m done, can do without. i was never a heavy smoker-4 or 5 a day for 15 years. but my question is i am always hungry now, any tips for ex-smokers on how to combat this? Don-t get my wrong I am more than willing to gain weight to have a longer healthier life just would like some tips. thanks
Some ppl start putting toothpicks in there mouth and them some start eating peanuts then they gain weight...
yes its common for newly quit people.. to put on a few -newly quit pounds-.. there are subtle changes to your metabolism, as now food simply tastes better.. in time the weigh goes away.. unless one is morbidly obese the risk of a few pounds is much less than continues smoking..

congrats on the quit however it was achieved..these is simply no wrong way to quit..

I-ve never understood this...

Does being hungry mean you HAVE to eat? No.
I want a cigarette right now and I-m NOT going to go smoke one.
I want to open those Doritos but I-m not going to do that either.

If you can resist the urge to smoke, you can resist the urge to eat a bag of potato chips. You can do it!
