How can I quit smoking? is there any alternative when I feel smoking? -

Hi
I am trying to quit smoking. I smoke 10-15 Cigrates per day. I am smoking from past 3 years. Please help me.....

thanks.
Sujay
do not withdraw! but if smoke 10-15 sticks a day.. then try to cut one stick per week. then alternstively, if u feel smoking.. eat candy..or..do something which makes u busy.. and dont let yourself be alone and doing nothing, coz you will think of smoking.. instead, engage into sports or go to gym.. or start cooking your own food. but do not withdraw rigth away.. or substitute your cigar with something right away.. go in the process... little by little.. im not saying that doctors will just waste your money.. but try your little own remedy first, then if u succed, you will be proud later, what a brave thing you-ve done..

but if its hard.. seek medical advise from professionals

good luck

p.s.
my two brothers smokes
my four sisters smokes
my papa smoke and so as my mama who was a change smoker (R.I.P.)
i have one sister who doesnt smoke and of course me!

after trying to change litlle by little, now....
my papa doesnt smoke anymore
my two brother doesnt smoke anymore, thank god
my two sister still smokes( they have Cadio=pulmonary problems)
my other sister smoke occasionally...

they did not go to doctor, they helped themselves..

good good good luck to you

me and my city supports in -tobacco:deadly in any form or disguise-
I did it the good old fashioned way...Cold Turkey. I smoked a pack a day for about 20 years, but fear became my biggest motivator. I prayed a lot for strength, I walked until I was exhausted, and I did deep breathing exercises when I really got the urge. Those worked better than anything else. Also, this sounds gross, but I would take -drags- off one of my husband-s punched-out cigs, and I would get the nicotine taste without the smoke that way. It-s hard, but you can do it. Good Luck !!!
One alternative to smoking would be the holistic approach where you can have acupressure or acupuncture done to help with some of the cravings.

Another method that is worked for some is keep a container of liquorish on your desk so when the craving arrives chew on some it gives your mouth something to do. Just like holding and puffing cigarettes sometimes just giving your mouth an alternative can ease the cravings a bit.

Do not forget if you really want to stop smoking you have to become more active in regards to not smoking just like working out every week. You invest time into it if only a little at first, as long as you keep at it until it-s a routine in your daily life. The more you focus on finding help groups and caring about your health and what smoking can do to your lungs in the future the more you can help your self to better health. Find a goal if not for yourself for your friends and family around you.

The help is out there it-s up to you to make the choice to beat it and not have it beat you. I know you can do it.

Best of luck to you.
If you want to quit- congratulations! you-ve made the first step!

Quit rates using:
cold turkey - ~10%
patches - ~20-25%
zyban - ~35%
chantix (not sure if it-s available yet) - 50%

I recommend seeing your Primary Care Physician and asking him what he/she thinks is best for you.
ask your doctor for zyban
When my parents quit smoking, they both went on the patch and found chewing gum or sipping water through a straw to help with the habit part of it. It-s the hand-to-mouth action that yoru body craves, so anything that you can chew on, fiddle with, etc.
Nicotine Gum.
i agree with the person above.. i prefer u ask ur doctor wat is best for u
talk to your doc.
GOOD LUCK, I just started to quit smoking I am on a new med called Chantix it works great! I recomend it, talk to your doc about it. I have no cravings now that I am on it. good luck!!!

What physical symptoms should I expect when I finally quit? I-ve smoked for 20 years this year.
I smoked for 11 years VERY heavily (Marb Reds). I have been without a cigarette for 2 ? months now. After the first 48 hours you will feel really light headed. The reason you feel so light headed is because your body isn’t used to getting that much oxygen… So that is really a good thing. Using the commit lozenge is very helpful if you feel nicotine withdrawals.

The easiest way to quit and the ONLY way that worked for me was to use commit for 2 months… about 8 lozenges a day. I took the 4 MG ones. That is the strongest dosage available over-the-counter. Get the 4 MG ones if you smoke your first cigarette within a half an hour of waking up. They also offer a 2 MG Commit Lozenge but it seems like the 2 MG ones break up too easily in your mouth. The 4 MG ones stay solid in your mouth. I prefer the Mint ones. If you have a sweet tooth then go for cherry. Be carefull tho. Somtimes they will leave white powder on you mouth that could be embarissing if you-re not paying attention. Just lick your lips from time to time. At first the lozenge will burn your mouth but… you will cry for joy when you feel the nicotine going through your body and killing your urge to smoke.

WARNING!!!! When you decide to quit. Be prepared. You will go through phases where you want to smoke severely. You will become VERY irritated.

How to get through the Addiction Fits.

Some times something you will be doing will trigger the natural smoker reaction you have to get up and go outside and smoke…. Or maybe you smoke inside…. But the key to staying off of cigarettes is to simply survive without one through these nicotine fits. When you have a nicotine fit simply DON’T give in. Jogging helped a lot for me. Pop a lozenge in and fight the urge. Make sure to throw away all of your cigarettes. There were times I KNOW I would have given in if they would have been on hand. Just know that the Nicotine fit will pass over time. Sometimes it feels like they wont but they will ALL eventually pass. It is allong the same lines as when you have an itch. if you don-t scrath it it will irritate you for quite a while, but it will eventually pass.

Another symptom you will start to feel is relief. When I used to smoke all I could think about was dying. When you quit you will feel alive again and all of your nervous habits will relax. You will feel human again and won-t be full of fear!

To be honest when I look in the mirror now I look so much better. I can tell that i look better by the way the girl react to me.

Another thing that helps is to tell your family. They can help support you. I know my girlfriend supports me 1000%.

My throat used to be constantly in pain from smoking. It almost felt like I had throat cancer and my breath smelt so bad I constantly had to chew gum. ... Now 2 months later my throat feels completly healed and my breath is totally healed as well.

Take it from me. 2 months ago I literally couldn’t walk up 2 flights of stairs without being so out of breath I had to breathe through my mouth. 2 months later….. 0 cigarettes; and I feel so much better. Jogging has raised my cardio back up to where I feel human again….

Be prepared tho….. You will get hungry again. Try switching to diet rite soda, and snack on veggies, take a multi-vitamin too. You are going to feel TIRED. For one, your body is going to go into a healing cycle for probably the next full year and without all the nicotine in your body lifting your energy levels you will want to sleep more…. But hey that is a good thing.

Please have fun quitting. It will probably be the hardest thing you will every face in your lifetime…. But know there are others out there that are standing with you…. I am for one.

I used to be affraid that if I quit, somehow they would outlaw cigarettes and I wouldn-t get to have one again if I ever -change my mind- . Don-t worry about that. The only thing in life that is irriplacable is your body. I started smoking when I was way too young. 14!~ Please stay positive.

Oh and one more thing. I haven-t gone to church in years but I found that praying and begging to God did help.

GOOD LUCK!
I have been smoking for the past 31 years, and have been thinking seriously about quitting for years. You already know its a terriable addiction and the damage it is doing to your lungs, so I don-t have to stress that point. Recently I decided to start buying those little cigarette filters, they are clear and catch the tar and nicotine your Filter does not catch. Honestly after looking at that nasty sticky brownish yellow stuff that this filter catches and realising all the years that stuff was being swallowed and going to my Lungs and other body parts, it will do a Mental job on you for sure. I am slowing down on my Smoking now and when I do smoke it is never without a filter tip on it now. I am hoping that once I can break the Nicotine addiction, I can break this bad habit.. Good Luck
I ggt bad stomach cramps the first night. Better to quit in the pm, then go to bed early, then it gives you more hours without nicotine without the pain.

Why is it that you tend to gain weight when you quit smoking? Even when you are not eating anymore than usual? -

Why is it that you tend to gain weight when you quit smoking? Even when you are not eating anymore than usual? -

I think there are several different reasons, but the two that I-ve heard: -nicotine speeds up your metabolism,- and -smoking is more of an oral fixation than a habit, replaced only by something else to put in your mouth.- Drinks have calories too.... You don-t always have to EAT more, sometimes you DRINK more.... Like a straw replaces a cigarette...
People have this tendency to replace that cigarette that was between their fingers WITH FOOD....then the pounds pile on......
Because nicotine is a stimulant and it increases your metabolism just as a diet pill does.
Smoking stops your hunger x

Can you give me some advice? I consider myself a social smoker, or maybe worse. I only smoke when I-m bored. When I-m at home, I-m always busy doing something, but as soon as I go out, I feel the need to light up a cigarette. Can you please give me some advice on what should I do, or with what should I replace the cigarette with?
Buy a bulk box of Chupa-chups and keep three or four in your pockets and car and hall table and so on, and stick one of them in your mouth whenever you feel the urge.

Works, trust me.

How do we quit smoking and abstain from alcohol? -

Just stop. Make the last cigarette and the last drink the last one. Then drink coke , lemonade or juice when you go out.
Your body does not need these poisons.
Think about leaving your loved ones behind when you die from a painful death from cancer or liver disease. Or think about how they have to watch you suffer and take your last breath. Sorry I don-t want to sound mean and nasty about it but this is the truth. I saw what my wife had to go through when her father died from cancer. This has cured me from wanting to go back to smoking. I have been smoke free for 15 years. Quiting is the best thing you can do.

I-ve heard commercials on the radio advertising classes to hypnotize you in order to lose weight or stop smoking, just wondering if anyone has heard or had good results from this.
If you don-t mind my offering a suggestion: Try the book -Instant Self-Hypnosis- by Forbes Robbins Blair. It has completely changed my life. It has helped me lose weight. It has helped me to quit biting my fingernails (something I did for over 30 years). Please read it and decide for yourself. Better yet, try it out...it is an easy read, and it will revolutionize the way you look at self-hypnosis! It did for me. I knew I was going to see results, and that was key, because I wanted it to work...so I set myself up for success. You will too.

Best of success with your search.
I cured myself and I bet you can cure yourself too from this bad habit with this product I found out:

I read his book with such determination only to fail. I really want to quit but the book just didn-t work. Anyone else?
My friend ( who quit for 6 months and gave me the book) has gone back to smoking. She is now reading the book again and setting a new quit date. Every time we quit we can learn from the experience. We learned how to smoke and become addicted to nicotine, so, we can learn how to not smoke and become addicted to a healthy life style.

I am now 2 weeks into my quit after reading the book and using nicotine replacement patches. It is easier this time, but still hard at times. Great help at site www.quitnet.com if you decide to quit again. Good luck.

K guys i just quit smoking bin 4 days since i had a puff i feel miserable as all heck its my chest that hurts the most and i feel like a child always needing something i feel like im going insane or dieing i really need help its mostly my chest i can deal wit the anxiety what can i do guys please someone help me im diein here! also to note feels like in my chest as if i had a cold and i bin coughing but i actually dont have a cold!
Since nicotine is so adictive, you-re basically going through withdraw. It took me 18 times to actually quit, because I kept having the same symptoms that you-re getting.
Don-t take a smoke. Get rid of the cigs, but you-ll probably need a new thing to do.. Try nicotine gum, or chewing something like sunflower seeds. Keep yourself distracted, but know that quitting is the right thing to do!
Be persistent, and definitely DON-T give up!
I quit smoking too - I-m right there with ya. You have to change your habits! Whenever you feel like you need to smoke pop a mint or a piece of gum in your mouth - do something. Anything! Go outside for a minute, play a game on your computer, water your plants, sew a button on a shirt, something! It-s been about 20 days for me (I don-t count, I find that counting days only makes me dwell on it more), and it does get better. I still want a cigarette almost 24/7, but I just pop a mint, do something different - eventually forget about it for a while.
go to the Dr and get on Xanax for anxiety, and it will make you more sleepy and chilled out, also talk about Depression medications. You will feel better and healthier just give it time. Good luck and keep it up! remember smoking kills you!
Its called with drawl if you do not get better see a doctor. It could be that you are really sick . Do not give up it took ten tries before i finally was able to quite it is tough but in the long run it is a wise move and your body and health will improve greatly.

good luck.
What is happening is you are coughing up all that nasty Flem in your lungs. Believe me you will feel better soon. Congrats on quitting. You may want to know this that all the nicotine is out of your system, I-ve been there myself and haven-t smoked in 18 years.
go have a smoke life is to short ,what you quit and could walk in front of a bus and then what.your lungs are recouping and soon you-ll cough alot of stuff up ,it is good to cut down but quiting is up to you

I crave cigarettes when I drink, I want to quit smoking without quitting drinking. Any suggestions? -

Drinking is one of your triggers, so you have to break that trigger, just like some people associate a cup of coffee with a cig, or driving, or break at work etc.
There-s a lot of free info plus a great course to break your habit and the associations you have, here:
http://www.quitguide.com

Chew on a tooth pick or straw.
then when you drink and you smoke, if you don-t feel like smoking then don-t drink.
thats like saying u want to diet but still eat apound of cookie dough it wont work.....but if u realy want to do it u would stop both and i knpw u can do it just try....
When you know these facts, quitting is not that hard anymore.

Smoking will damage blood vessels in the penis and will shorten the penis and ultimately lead to impotence. This is all real. Canada and Australia alread force -Smoking can lead to impotence- label on cigarette box.

How do i get the motivation to quit smoking and get back into the gym after not exercising for one year -

i want to lose about 10 kg in 6 months any suggestions on diet and exercise
Find something that inspires you. Getting healthy sometimes isn-t enough to get someone pumped up in the gym environment. Bring your music and listen to something that gets you excited! You need to keep looking forward to the benefits you-ll get out of quitting and joining the gym.

Life will be so much better for you when you-re healthy!
Put your cigarettes next your tracksuit and trainers.

Set a recurring alarm on your cell-phone calendar to play something motivational like eye of the tiger. Set it for the time you usually get home from work.

Imagine yourself as you expect to be after successfully training for 6 months.

Keep a record of your activity and if you fall off the wagon, don-t worry, you will feel differently in an hour or two.
I wish I knew!

I need to do the same thing, but can-t get the motivation!

Hope you succeed!
You just do it.

How did you quit smoking? How did you deal with your cravings and cope with anxiety/nervousness?Thank you!? -

I quit cold turkey 5 years ago after smoking for 17 years. It wasn-t easy by any means, but it really wasn-t that hard either. You just need to accept that you will crave them and commit to not touching them. I just kept looking at why I quit (for my then 3 year old daughter) to give me strength....and it worked and now I-ve been smoke-free for nearly 5 years.

It can be done so stick to it....and if you do happen to fail, DON-T beat yourself up over it- we all fail in life...pick yourself up, brush yourself off and try again....and keep trying. If you give in, look at the reasons why you gave in and learn from that mistake.

Best wishes to you and have a very blessed day :-)
I quit cold turkey after over a decade of smoking from the age of 12. I always kept my smokes on me at all times so that it always remained my decision not to have one, rather than feeling denied a smoke because I could not get one if I wanted. I guess the anxiety and nervousness will depend on what they are caused by. Is it just the absence of the smoke and hand to mouth reflex that provides comfort or are there other issues that need to be addressed.
Clearly keeping busy will help. Avoid situations where you do things that have smoking attached, like sit down coffee breaks etc. Spend time in smoke free environments. Read fiction novels to give you something to focus on. Take up walking. Each time you really need a smoke have a slow drink of water instead.
I gave up for my kids. Even now I would still love a smoke, for me the urge has never gone away. Every few months I toy with the idea that just a few cigarettes will be ok. But fortunately I have been able to resist. Well enough, all this talk has me thinking about it again.

Be safe, be sage
At first I used the patch. I called the 1800 quit line and I got 4 months supply for free. The patch was great. I had no urges to smoke at all, until I took it off. Then I was prescribed Wellbutrin for Depression and adhd, and after about 2 weeks on it, I had no desire to ever smoke EVER! I am no longer on the Wellbutrin. While I do get an urge to have just 1 cigarette every now and then I have to remind myself that 1 cigarette will turn into many. I worked too hard to quit. Even with the patch and medicine it was hard because it had become a habitual routine. I have to maintain willpower in order to stave off those pesky cravings. I just dont smoke. I may want to, but I know the craving will go away in a few minutes.
I-m still trying to quit. I thought I-d see how others have quit. Maybe some of their tactics will work for me. I hope so because I really don-t enjoy smoking anymore. It-s a bad habit that the government allowed and now little by little is taking away. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment. I-m tired of the high taxes too.

What can I say to convince my cousin to quit smoking?
There are so many things that smoking does to the body. The really sad fact is that it does not just hurt the smoker. It really does effect all persons around them.
A smoker has increased risk of respiratory and vascular complications. Smoking actually creates a tar substance in the lungs and decreases the persons capacity to take in oxygen. Also smokers veins and arteries are constricted from chemicals in the cigarettes. This puts them at a higher risk for blood clot causing stroke.
Mothers who smoke when they are pregnant usually have smaller babies. A nonsmokers umbilical cord (which supplies nourishment to the baby) is usually about wide as a roll of quarters and the smokers umbilical cord is about as thick as a pencil.
Children who grow up in the home of a smoker are at higher risk for developing asthma and/or allergies. They can develop lung cancer just as easily as the actual smoker can. Not to mention that growing up with parents who smoke puts them at higher risk for becoming smokers themselves.
I have a grandfather that smokes. He is eighty. The last several years he has been on oxygen. He wakes up at night because he can-t get his breath. He has a barrel chest because that is what your body does to try and help you get more oxygen. Your lungs try to get bigger so they can take in more oxygen because the cigarettes have destroyed portions of the lungs over the many years of smoking. Some people would say he has made it to eighty and that is a long time for a smoker to live. You have to keep in mind that most of his family lived into or close to their 100-s. They say that every cigarette takes five minutes off your life. There is no telling how long he could have lived if he had just been able to stop smoking.

Send them to this site and let them read this information. Though it will only help if they are willing to quit. If there is no desire to quit, they won-t. It-s worth a shot though.

Hi,

It is best, not be reminded about the time when you were a smoker. To overcome any such thoughts is by replacing the habit with something good such as a fitness program.

BTW, you are a winner, keep it up !

How do you deal with irritability from quitting smoking? -

I quit last Weds (1/10/07) and am taking Chantix. I have been really irritable and find myself getting depressed, feeling guilty, etc. I exercise, eat right, talk with people I trust. What else can I do? I also take antidepressants.
You may want to read this article
http://nitzitry.notlong.com/
i found, will be useful also has info on different treatments and should help with your depression. And some natural remedies which will help cheer people up.
I would recommend talking to your doctor.
i took some medication before i quit and that help be calmer.
If it-s just from quitting smoking, the problem is TEMPORARY. You say you-re taking antidepressants, so it looks like you haven-t told the whole story.

I quit smoking so many times I lost count of how many times I lost count, and then one time it finally worked. I haven-t had a cigarette in 31 years and I have no more desire to smoke one than to put one in my ear.
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Keep it that way, be strong-minded, stay to it. We know it-s not easy.

What antidepressants are you taking? Since when are you taking them?

You should talk to your doctor that this Chantrix that I-ve never heard of can interfere with your antidepressants. Maybe you just haven-t found the right antidepressant for you. Go on webmd.com and find the forum for depression where you can talk about how you feel, what you-re taking, etc. You can find some support there.

good luck
You can-t just quit. You have to reduce the amount of your cigarettes first, then quit. That-s what I did and I manage to quit without any drugs or medication. But I don-t exactly call that I quit smoking, because I still smoke one cigarette per month and that helps a lot. Consider it paying your dues for one month without any cigarettes.

I need to quit smoking because I am pregnant. my problems with quitting are I get real angry, I get tired ? -

all the time and I get light headed can someone please offer me some advice? I already know all the bad smoking does.
Every day you smoke the baby is not getting as much oxygen via your blood stream as he/she should. So NOT quitting is potentially hurting the baby.

Being tired goes with being pregnant for a lot of women, so I-m not sure what you are feeling is the fault of trying to quit. If it IS the lack of nicotine, those sensations will pass in about 1-2 weeks, as will the anger and light-headedness. Those are all signs of nicotine withdrawal... and the body flushes out nicotine fairly quickly... as I said 1-2 weeks. You can speed up the process by drinking lots of water, fruit juices, milk, and other non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic liquids.
Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

Most companies who sell quit smoking aids admit to this on their websites. They say to use their products in conjunction with a psychological support program. Why? Because without one the chances of quitting are greatly reduced. In reality the psychological program does most of the work. The quit smoking aids are more of a helping hand and are often unnecessary.

It is key to stay positive, don-t focus on the cravings. Keep the reasons why you quit in the first place (your baby) circling through your head. This will keep your spirit and motivation high. Cravings will ease as a result.

Visit our site to join our inspirational 12 day e-course. You can also download our free book -36 Powerful Superfoods- to help fight weight gain and start mending damage caused by smoking. For more information and to post your opinion about the products you have tried, visit the following website.

Good luck to you, all the best with your pregnancy
This is something you really need to discuss with your doctor. Quitting effects the baby as well, and you will not be able to use most quit smoking aides.

Also, call your local cancer agencies and ask them to send you booklets about quitting while pregnant. And go to your local bookstore to buy Allen Carr-s book on quitting smoking. If you read it, it will help. It may seem goofy in some parts, but if you take the actual point of it, it will help.

Also know that cravings only last 2 minutes. So sip on some water when you have one, or walk around the block.

Withdraw can be almost unbearable for a lot of people trying to quit smoking. This is why there are so many smoking cessation aids on the market. However, since you-re pregnant these aids are not available to you. You will have to think of the life of your unborn child and go cold turkey. Good luck to you.
Try replacing it with a food. You need to probably up your food intake to help curve your cravings. You need to anyways since your pregnant. Find a favorite snack that you just LOVE and when you get the urge just start snacking.

You really don-t break bad habits, you just replace them with a new bad habit so be careful.
I-m pregnant and I quit smoking the day i found out!! Do it for you-re baby... The tiredness and getting light headed is all part of being pregnant so don-t let that be you-re excuse for not quiting. Just do it for you-re self and most of all for you-re unborn child!!!!
just do it. The headaches are withdrawals from the nicotine. If you quit for the entire pregnancy don-t start smoking again.
you get like that cos your body is craving the nicotine. Its the nicotine fit.
I would suggest you replace it with a hobby or your favorite snack. :D

congrats on the baby!
get a little fresh air take walks, that wil lhelp open up the lungs and get your lungs feeling better..in turn your body will promote energy and you wont think about smoking so much
Kids make you angry and tired too. Take some responsibility.
Talk to your doctor maybe he/she can help u.

Maybe trying eating fruits in place of smokes.
I need to quit smoking because I am pregnant. my problems with quitting are I get real angry, I get tired ? -

How did you quit smoking? -

How did you quit smoking? -

I ran out of money. haha
Smokings expensive.
In Arizona I pay about 8 bucks a pack.
I almost had a heart attack when I went to Cali and only paid 4 bucks for Marb Reds.

Anyways- you just have to suffer it out. It-s like having hunger pains, wanting to eat, but wanting to lose weight and not eating lunch. You feel discomfort- but you just have to deal.

also everytime I crave a cigarette I try to do something healthy for myself. Like- when I crave a cigarette in the morning soooo bad, I-ll go take a walk.
Just think of heart disease, think of cancer, stroke, bronchitis, and think of emphysema! There are approximately 4000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, many of them toxic. The ingredients in cigarettes affect everything from the internal functioning of organs to the efficiency of the body-s immune system. The effects of cigarette smoking are destructive and widespread. Cigarette smoking causes 87% of lung cancer deaths. Cigarette smoking alone is directly responsible for approximately 30% of all cancer deaths annually in the United States. Each year, a staggering 440,000 people die in the US from tobacco use. Nearly 1 of every 5 deaths is related to smoking. About 87% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, and is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. But not all of the health problems related to smoking result only in deaths. Many of these smokers are suffering from more than one smoking-related condition. The diseases occurring most often were chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. Emphysema is one of the worst things to live with that you can imagine. I watched my mom suffer with it for years. There is nothing worse than not being able to breath, it-s like torture. You can go on for years like that. And you know what it can be like to live after a stroke?

If all this is not enough to motivate you to stay quit, or get you over the cravings, than nothing will. Than your a fool indeed. Sorry to be harsh, but I have always beieved some of the dumbest people in the world are smokers who keep on smoking. Yes it-s a powerful addiction. I smoked when I was a teeneager, also use marijauana, cocaine, pills, speed, narcotics, etc. I quit them ALL!! I am almost 50 and can hold my breath or sing a single tune for almost two years. I play the tune game with my daughter. Everytime I do, I think to myself Thank GOD for good lungs and being able to breath easily, and I would NEVER smoke in a million years!

cold turkey, no money for smokes, pay for gas at the pump, and don-t go to places that sell cigarettes, most stores have assigned registers or special locations to buy them, just stop using them, if not just hold them and put them back at the very end when u are about to pay, i started when i was 14 quit at 17, I-m really proud of that, but still take one about once a year. for old times sake.
i quit by having niccotine patches, but it didnt work, so i went cold turkey and it worked, have faith in yourself and remember, cravings only last a couple of minutes or so, if you learned to walk, drive, talk, run, there the hardest challenges of all, but quitting is tiny, all you have 2 do is put down the last ciggi down! GOOD LUCK XOXOXO

from KitY :o)
I developed a severe rash like whelps on my legs and buttocks around the age of 9 and I had to stop.

It was either that or my dad said he was going to kill me if I ever filched another cigarette from off the top of the refrigerator. That was the FIRST time I learned that cigarettes were harmful to your health.
I actually kept the pack in my pocket (one of those hard cases), and just decided -Okay, I don-t wanna smoke anymore.- It-s all about will power. But I-m lucky. Very few people are able to just up and quit cold turkey.

When you quit smoking does your metabolism slow down? -

is this why people put on weight when they quit? thanks.
no, it does not slow down your metabolism. The reason people gain weight when they quit is to do with snacking. you get hungrier as it is an appetite suppressant also you snack to occupy yourself :)

How to quit smoking ? -

has anyone out there got any tips for quiting smoking from personal experince ??
stop
Try the commit lozenges they worked well for me.

Mostly it-s a behavior issue.

After the cravings disappear,-you need to work hard on this- change routines surrounding your smoking habits.

Plan ahead set a quit date Do not allow people to smoke around you, or in your house. Get non- smoking friends who have successfully quit. be patient with your self and exercise.
Just stop! It worked for me.
If you-ve been a long-term smoker than quitting cold turkey is going to be much, much harder than if you haven-t smoked that long. The first thing is you have to be really motivated to quit. The patches and nicotine gum work pretty well. You gradually withdrawn from the nicotine. I found Zyban to be extremely helpful. Going cold turkey I would have severe withdrawal symptoms for several days but on the Zyban (generic name bupropion or amfebutamone, also available under the brand name Wellbutrin for depression) I only experienced very minor withdrawal symptoms for one or two days. If you can get through the first five days or so each day will become easier. If you do succeed in quitting don-t EVER TAKE EVEN ONE PUFF off a cigarette. Good luck.
When I stopped smoking, I quit cold turkey. I ate a lot of salad and vegetables. It helped me to replenish vitamins and minerals that I didn-t have because of smoking. I made a habit out of eating fruit and vegetables instead. Before I knew it, I no longer smoked!
I was never a smoker. But my father smoked heavily for years.

He quit cold turkey when he had to go into the hospital for appendicitis.

Gum will probably help, if you need to put something in your mouth. And you will need to take up a hobby that will keep you busy so you won-t be tempted to reach for the cigarettes

I-ve also heard of people who would keep jars to put the money into that they would have spent on cigarettes. It-s quite gratifying watching it fill up.

Good luck!
You have to intentionally decide to, you already know it-s the right thing so you-re half way there!
Every fifteen minutes or so... don-t have one.
Just make up your mind to quit and you will.
jog everyday and gradually you will hate it....dont force your self to leave it....just let your body decides and you will be amayzed ;)
I have tried many things to stop. I smoked 3 packs a day. I smoked so much it was more than my car payments every month. The best program I have used is the -quit smoking right now program- http://tinyurl.com/yag6v4
They helped me go cold turkey and never look back. In fact, I can have a cigarette now and not want another one. That-s how great it works.
I used the patch as well, and didn-t smoked for 2 months but had headaches every day. the mental part is hell, no question. what worked for me is chewing big red gum, (no other flavor helped, kinda strange), and changing your habits. if you normally wake up and smoke while drinking coffee, take a walk instead and have coffee when you get back. you really have to do something totally different at those times when you would normally be smoking. it-s hard to do, but someone told me that the mental craving of a cigarette only lasts for 7 minutes, so, if you can get past that 7 minutes, it-ll be easier! I suggest you invest in yourself and then put the money you are saving into a jar and watch it grow, then buy yourself a nice reward for quitting. good luck to you!
Wow, the hardest thing I-ve ever done was when I decided to quit smoking. There is no easy way to do it! I just stop cold turkey and it was so ruff, but it made me stronger. It taught me to be able to tell other people NO!. When I did smoke and I didn-t want to do something for someone (family, friend, husband) I would just give in and go smoke. So it a tough but it will make you so much stronger and not to mention the sense of smell - taste. I have been smoke free for 9 years. Every blue blue moon I will crave for a cigarrette or reach for one out of and old habit.
Best of luck!!

COPD life expectancy if you quit smoking? -

I was wondering if anyone knows someone with COPD. My mom was just diagnosed, I don-t know exactly what percentage of her lung is diseased, I just know it-s in one lung, and she is now on Advair. If she manages to quit smoking, will she be ok? I mean, will she live more than just a few years? I can-t imagine losing her, she-s only 56. My mother in law just passed away a few months ago at 62 from lung cancer, I can-t even handle this right now. I AM going to make sure somehow she quits smoking, but does anyone know if it truly helps and will prolong her life a lot? I want her to live to a ripe old age of 85. I don-t want her to just have 5 or 8 years. Thanks.
LISTEN to me VERY closely. I have COPD. I have it spread thru out BOTH of my lungs. I am 60 years old. I am on oxygen 24/7. I am on many drugs. YOU didn-t ask about my health, you came on here and asked a question regarding your mother and I am going to answer your question.

This DR. FRANK is SO INCORRECT. The ONLY TWO things I agree with that he said is, -There are not any drugs that can improve COPD-. And the second item was, -your mother has to quit smoking-.

He referred to inhaled steroids such as Advair only being used on extremely bad cases of COPD in the U.K. with less than half their lung capacity. THAT could be true in the U.K. BUT here in the U.S. every other person is on ADVAIR. There are different strengths of Advair and it is still very widely used here.............
He had no right to scare you with -things are already very bad.-

IF your mom has COPD in ONE lung and the other lung is fine, she could live until she is 102. You only need ONE lung to live. IF the COPD lung is that bad, they can remove it. Your mother-s prognosis is EXCELLENT if you are privy to everything and know this is the truth..........I would give anything for one good lung.

Your mom can get a lot of help to stop smoking. I am sure her doctors would give her the drugs and whatever she needs to quit. BUT she will have to do it on her own. You cannot MAKE her do it. My daughter still smokes and she watched her grandmother die and now I have it. You just DON-T make a smoker quit...........

Your mom having COPD is worlds away from lung cancer. She has a second chance at life, a lot of people do not......I hope she learns that.
Also she has diabetes, anemia, hypothyroidism, now COPD and a spot on her lung they-re watching b/c it-s too small to biopsy. So you could say i-m freaking out right now. I just hope she-s not one of the percentage that still smokes even after being diagnosed with this.

She-s lucky in some respects, I have COPD,, I use sprivia and asmenex (cortisteroid) daily I only have 30% lung capacity
I have oxygen as a PRN thing - I-m almost 67.

I do cardio/pulmonary rehab, I can-t say enough about the program

If you rehab for a few hours a week, you have an 87% better chance of staying out of the hospital

There is a statement about excersise that might be an incentive

~If you can walk 1/4 mile, odds are you will live 3 more years ~

I do a mile in 27 min

The first year I had problems, I was in the hosp 5 times

I have 11 more days to make it a year w/o going to the hospital

Rehab cost me $362 a year One trip to the Hospital is over $500.

If you get a good rehab like I did, They have a pulmanory Tech, A cardio tech, A respiratory RN and a monitor that goes to a DR if you have trouble

IMHO you can-t beat the price
Life expectancy varies. It all depends on how bad your COPD is, what diseases make up your COPD, if you have any other health concerns and your current age.

I can tell you that if you enroll in a pulmonary rehab program, it can increase your quality of life and may ever extend your life.
i just quit smoking last friday, and your mom-s story gives me strength.

i hope everything works out for you guys, i love my mom a lot too...
You sound so caring, she-s lucky to have you as a son. COPD can be mild, moderate or severe. So it depends what level your mother has. Giving up smoking won-t help her lungs recover but it will slow down the deterioration and if she looks after herself and gets proper treatment she might well live to a ripe old age. But I think you should go with your mum on her next appointment and ask the experts.
There is no set amount of time to live...depending on her life style, and that she quits and manages to stay that way will only improve things...there are treatments and centers that help manage the copd , make sure she gets all the help she can.
My father died recently, with COPD as one of the causes. He was 89, Diagnosed w/ emphysema 30 years ago.

He was a carpenter, worked with asbestos, and was on oxygen 24/7 the last 2 years of his life. He was also a smoker. It was only in the last 3-4 years he had problems catching his breath.
So, she could be around a LONG time.

Stopping smoking NOW is the best thing ANYBODY could do for their health,

Was she diagnosed by a pulmonary specialist?

You might consider a visit to one for a thorough evaluation. There are inhalers which do a world of good.

Run this by her primary care doctor.

I hope 20 years from now you can tell me she-s doing well.
No way to predict her prognosis, but to have any chance of getting anywhere she must stop smoking NOW! I like your optimism but unfortunately even when given this diagnosis, and even if SHE, rather than you where talking about giving up smoking, the chances of her succeeding are not much better than 14%! So you will certainly have your work cut out.

No drugs improve the existing lung damage in COPD. In UK inhaled steroid are now only recommended for COPD patients whose FEV1 has dropped to -50% of normal. If this was the criteria used for her therapy decision then things are already very bad.

No sense at all beating about the bush, Ignoring therapy , none of which does more then decrease exacerbation-s her only chance is to stop at once.
COPD is a slow killing disease! If the person stop smoking(it-s a must!)whit normal medication,(Advair,Albuterol,etc..)you can get to the 80-s.Go to web sites and check what really COPD.You can learn a lot and show your Mom, what cigarettes can do for the health

I have quit smoking for 5 weeks and still crave daily, is that normal.? -

I have quit smoking for 5 weeks and still crave daily, is that normal.? -

I would have thought that by now I would not be craving - thought they are fairly manageble. I smoked for 20 years.
After five weeks, what you are now feeling is more than likely not cravings but rather habits. I quit smoking years ago and the process was easy for me once I learned the difference. I wanted a cigarette because I thought my body craved one, just had to have one. But in reality, I wanted a cigarette because I was doing something or in a situation when I would have normally lit a cigarette without thinking twice about. Habits can be easily broken.
Yes. There-s a lot of unfortunate nonsense out there about how nicotine withdrawal is over in two weeks, but it can and frequently does last much longer than that. The strength of the cravings depend on how much and long you smoked, and how sensitive to nicotine you are. As some say, they may never go away entirely, but they-ll keep getting milder for as long as a year.
i quit about 1 year ago and every now and then i think i want a cigarette, but at one point, i took a puff from a friends cigarette and ended up choking..sort of like i had never smoked before...as it turns out, after all the years of smoking, i really just missed the idea of smoking and not the reality...but cravings are normal and you just have to ignore them and focus on the fact that you quit for a reason. Good luck!
I was thinking very often about smoking for months after i stopped. That was 12 years ago. It was one of the best things i ever did in my life. To be able to say -I quit smoking- still makes me feel good.

Stay with it, it gets easier as you go along and you will feel so proud of yourself when the craving finally dies down. GOOD LUCK.
Sometimes u need to change the things u did that would trigger the want for a smoke ex. cup of coffee and a cigarete when u have coffee u want a cigarete u have trained your mind for so many years that it only seems natural to have a cigarete with coffee, the physical addiction for nicotine is gone after only 3 days the rest is mental, it worked for me
It is very normal to still think that a cigarette would taste good. Fight the urge and in time the urge will lighten up. For some it takes years and others not so long. Be patient with yourself and at the same time be very proud that you have quit.
yes! that is very normal!
there are a lot of people experience craving for how many years.
so dont be worried.
u are in a good pahtway of quitting smoking!
^_^ goodluck!
yes, but at this point its all in your head. it takes one week for your body to rid itself of nicotine. everything after that is up to you
Yes, normal.
Thank you for quitting!!
And good luck.
yes thats normal, the cravings could last the rest of your life but if you manage them they go. Keep at it
I have quit smoking for 5 weeks and still crave daily, is that normal.? -

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

I haven-t smoked in two days but starting to get the cravings. I-m not even sure if I want to quit permanently. Maybe I just want to take a -break-.
They say after two days, the craving is all in your head, and
it-s only psychological. The hardest part is the withdrawl your
body goes through in the first 24hours. Aside from that text-
book info., I-ll advise you, here and now, to take a permanent
break from smoking. For two reasons, later on, they will be
harder if not seemingly impossible to lay down. And second,
if a doctor one day tells you that you have to quit due to
some malfunction in breathing, you will be able to put them
down. The longer you smoke the harder it is to quit. I was
a smoker for all of my adult life. I quit several times but
stress usually brought me back to smoking again. I had
a boyfriend get me started in highschool and it was cool
to be among those kids that did smoke. But I hid it from
my parents and succeeded til I was able to quit them.
I restarted when I started working after highschool, but I
never smoked at home. Only on work breaks. Then that
changed to becoming hooked and I smoked steadily.
Then when my daughter had a child, I became his care
giver and she didn-t want me smoking around the baby. I
quit again for four years, and then picked up the habit
one more time. Four years ago, I had to quit for good. It
affected the way I breathed. And I had developed Asthma,
and a heart condition. Quitting smoking the last time was
the hardest thing I-ve had to do as I still crave them once in
awhile. I hear most people do. They have ingredients that
make them more habit forming now, and it-s so easy to
become hooked after just a drag or two. You can-t just have
one and leave them alone. They aren-t made to -work- that
way. I had to make the choice of whether I wanted an early
grave by trying to inhale to smoke and enjoy it, or breathe
and put up with the withdrawls. Well I chose to breathe, as I
didn-t want to die. It came down to that fact. So I-ve been
a non smoker for about five years. And now I-m hooked on
the Nicorette gum. But my doctor would rather me be on
that for stress, than cigs that have tar that coats the lungs
and shortens lives. I have to wean myself off of the gum
next, since it-s been really too long. But they serve as a
buffer to stress, and I still -need- them.
So please take my advise, it isn-t cool to smoke. It is down-
right dumb. I know only -losers- smoke, from first hand
experience. As you will be a loser too, if your life is taken
away. Tough love, kiddo, but true to life!
I hope you can get on a nicotine withdrawl program, or more
aptly called, Smoking Cessation.
Please give me some feedback a month from now and let
me know how you-re doing about not smoking. I hope for your
sake, you won-t pick up another.

Put the cigarette down! It-s not that hard!
1st - don-t by any smokes.
2nd - do your best to keep out of situations where you know you used to smoke - such as if drinking your more likely to smoke, you might want to stay away from social drinks until you know it won-t make you want a drink.

for added help, patches or gum is a good help. Good luck with the quiting. But don-t get discouraged if you don-t succeed the 1st time, next time try to go longer without a smoke.
Research all the health hazards smoking has on the human body. If thats not enough i dunno I-m not a smoker.
JUST SAY NO !!!
the best way to stop smoking is to not light up
to stop smoking just when you feel like smoking go out and distract your self. try to work out or clean around the house just do some activity to stop smoking, smoking is bad trust me you will feel so better and stronger if you stop smoking the cancer sticks...
Trust me you do want to quit forever. I quit after 20 something years and it is the best thing I ever did for myself. I just quit no patches or anything.

It was not easy by any means when I got really aggravated in the evenings I would just go to bed knowing that the next day would bring me a little bit closer to being smoke free and it worked it is going on 10 years and I do not miss it one bit and I have lots more money whooo hooo.
I say everyday you make it without a smoke reward yourself buy yourself a treat. Good luck it is so worth it!!
i don-t smoke, but i know every single smoker i talk to wishes they could quit. It kills taste buds, can cause cancer obviously, makes car and house stink and dirty. I heard you can suck on a prune pitt to help cravings, i think it will work, maybe just suck on prunes, taste good to me, just like big raisins, good luck
The best thing that worked for me was the patch. I did all the steps and am now smoke free. Its very hard to do it cold turkey. you should be proud of yourself! Oh and for headaches..take some Tylenol or some pain pill. that really helped me when i quit. Whatever you choose, best of luck and while its not easy, you can do it. your lungs and body will thank you for it! I forgot to add that while the patch is not real cheap, just remember how much a pack of cigs cost nowadays
you should quit smoking for your healthy. if you want to quit smoking, try have some candy (especially mint or clove taste).

hope it works.
Hm.. thats a tough question.
Quitting takes a lot of will power.
I say getting professional help
Would be the first step towards
Kicking the addiction. I for one do
Smoke, but only 3 cigs a month.

Hm.. If you really want to quit, start
Smoking less, instead of giving it
Up quickly, because you already
Now its just a matter of time before
You start again. Just keep it under
1 pack a month, space out the cigs
Throughout your week.
Call for quit smoking campaign, around you ?
cold turkey.
The best way to quit is to think that u r wasting your life just to look cool. think!!!! do u want to die in your early 30-s?
Just tell yourself the next cigarette I light up is the one that will start the cancer that is just waiting for the right stimulant to set it off.
It-s all in the if you want to quit, everytime you think about it do something that takes up your time in the thinking department. I quit because i wanted to, and did things that preoccupied me. I have been smoke free for 4 years. It-s all if you want to quit!
Visit people in the hospital who are dying of lung cancer. I don-t mean just look at them, but really get to know them. When you observe life being wasted, your own outlook will be different.
Apparently accupuncture I know 2 ppl personally who quit that way! My mom is one of them.
first of all I believe you have to really want to quit, I know it sounds silly but I am also trying to quit smoking and I am finding that my want to give up is still not as strong as my need to give up.The best way I have found to take away the cravings is to go onto Nicotine Patches and if you do a course on these(usually 2-3mths) then you will just have to learn how to live without smoking. It is very hard to quit but dont beat yourself up if you have a slip just try again.
There is not much that I can tell you about that situation. I have tried to quit muliple times and I still can-t kick the habit. The patvh aaaaaaaand the gum is way to expensive for my pockets. Whem you find out the best way to quit Let me know:}
cold turkey baby! you go girl!

Anyone successfully quit smoking cigarettes? what helped motivate you to go through with it? 10pts? -

or if you know anyone who did.
My friend gave up smoking almost accidentally, she read Alan Carr-s -Easy Way- book that she found lying around at her sisters and just never wanted to smoke again!

I read it too and -really- made me want to quit but wasn-t quite enough to make me do it. Whenever I tried to quit, I would hear the little voice in the back of my head telling me to smoke... and once it started, I couldn-t stop thinking about cigarettes until I had one. Drove me mad!

In the end I went to a hypnotherapist, it cost me about AU$200 but was totally worth it. It made that little voice in the back of my head just shut up... so I never waivered. I didn-t have to use any will power, I could still hang out with my friends who were smokers, it was wonderful.

Hypnotherapy only works if you really want to quit, as it is not magic, just helps align your conscious and subconscious desires. I really wanted to quit because I wanted children... As long as you really want to quit it can really help you.

You CAN DO IT! Even if you fail a few times, keep going! You-ll never be a non-smoker like someone who has never tried it, but an ex-smoker can still have a long and healthy life :)
My motivation to quit was my son and his constant requests for me to quit ( he is 10). It still took me several attempts, you still need a solid method and a change of attitude towards smoking before you can successfully quit without future temptation.
I had a sore that wouldn-t heal.I recommend cutting down gradually until your quit date. I did this. I cut down to half a pack. I did this for three months. I smoked by the puff, not by the cigarette. I took only the amount of nicotine that was necessary to satisfy my urge to smoke and put the rest of the cigarette out.

After doing this for three months I quit cold turkey.

Now I-m eating more candy to distract me but its been 4 months. I have urges but they don-t last more than a second or two. If they-re lasting more than that then you-re concentrating on the cigarette. Don-t do it. Concentrate on something else.

My asthma was quite severe and uncontrollable when I was smoking.

So one day, I just decided to quit cold turkey andnever look back nor regretted it. Now I can smell better. My hair and clothes don-t reek of cigarette smells. I burned a few holes in my clothes.
My husband quit after our son started to pretend that he was smoking toothpicks. We asked him why he was doing that and he said that he wanted to be like his dad. That next day I made an appointment with our family doctor and my husband got a prescription for chantax, he has been smoke free for almost 3 months now and my son has not smoked a toothpick since. :)
My cousin showed me a picture of lungs of a newborn and those of a smoker, that scared me away, and I play the saxophone so in order for me to be able to play properly I need healthy lungs...
i gave up for my kids, i coudnt see them breathe in my smoke and suffer so that gave me the determination to quit.

you need to find something worth quitting for if you want to stand a chance. xx good luck
Yes. When your nan and mum (both heavy smokers) get lung cancer and die it motivates you to give up, for the sake of your family if anything.
Anyone successfully quit smoking cigarettes? what helped motivate you to go through with it? 10pts? -

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

Get support. Hang out with people that you know hate smoking and smokers and tell them you want to quit and they will probably help you. Chew gum.
Buy the patch or the gum and try it out. Also you need to be ready to quit (determined). Put a picture of someone you love inside your cigarette pack where you will see it every time you pick up your cigarettes (preferablly your child if you have any). Get a moral support group (people who tell you how good you are doing rather than people who offer you more cigarettes). Tell people you would prefer if they didn-t smoke around you because it-s too tempting for you to be around. Hope that helps.
Just drop it. When ever you catch yourself, just toss it.

Its tough, and you may still have a craving after 3 months, though Just stop as much as you can gradually.

Like I went half a day, then 1 day, then 3 days, then a week, then another week, then 3 weeks, then a month....and so on.
As a TRUE ALTERNATIVE APPROACH here are some ideas:
Meditation classes: They really do help
Hypnotherapy: same idea, but a little more in depth
Chantex (if you want to go the drug route, I-ve heard this is the best one out there)
Acupuncture

(how do I figure? I-ve worked in the medical field with these approaches the past 5 years, so I-ve met the proof that it works--the patients that have successfully quit!)
Buy nicorrete gum then buy another pack of regular gum orange flavor.Dont worry about parking it in your cheek just put the nicorrette in your mouth and chew.Yucky huh? Now add in the orange gum.Wow you get both a nicotine buzz and a yummy new hobby.Do 3 or 4 peices a day like that.Soon you will be down to 2 or 3 then 1 or 2. Then none worked for me and when I feel the urge to smoke in certain situation I try to keep a peice of niccorettegum and a pack of orange gum with me.
Take a three or four day vacation even if its to a moutain retreat or a local cruise. Somewhere where you can relax and not smoke, or better yet thta its illegal to smoke like a forest or something. This will cleanse your lungs and give you the head start to go cold turkey. It worked for me, Havent smoked in 2 years :D
Think about it this way...

$4 or more a pack...what, $25-30 a week...a pack of smokes or a gallon of gas?

Just quit. It-s not that hard...after the first day.
I would say join the ymca and work out and swim and just keep yourself busy! and praying wouldn-t hurt!
Nicorette gum
Go cold turkey.
pray

I have quit smoking. What can I do to both ease the side effects and help my body recover from years of abuse? -

Don;t be afraid to get medication for the side effects. nicotine is a powerful drug.

Just stopping helps your body recover! Look at this timeline:

20 minutes:
Blood pressure drops to normal; pulse rate drops to normal; increased circulation in hands

8 hours:
Oxygen level in your blood increases to normal; carbon monoxide level in your blood drops

24 hours:
Your chance for a heart attack has already gone down.

48 hours:
Your ability to smell and taste is already improved; walking is becoming easier.

2 weeks to 3 months:
Your circulation has improved. No more cold hands and cold feet. Your lung function has already increased up to 30%.

1 month to 9 months:
You-ll notice that coughing, sinus congestion and shortness of breath have decreased dramatically. Cilia have re-grown in your lungs increasing your ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs and reduce infection.

1 year:
Your risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half.

5 years:
Risk of stroke reduced to that of a nonsmoker. Risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus cut in half. Risk of lung cancer reduced in half compared to a smoker.

15 years:
Congratulations! Your risk for coronary heart disease and stroke is the same as for a lifelong nonsmoker.
LOL

I quit 55+ years and 5 packs a day

It took over 14 months before I started feeling better

This includes cardio pulmanory rehab
Good job. A big mistake people make is to try to ease the withdrawals.
Live with the side affects (for a short time) to truly understand just how powerful a drug nicotine is. Months from now, you-ll know why you quit and have no desire to start again.
yea probably unless u want 2 keep goin and get lung cancer...
Drink lots of water , exercise and eat a balanced diet.
You can reverse some things that smoking has cause , however somethings cannot be reversed but can be stopped. My advice to you is , get a full physical and see what comes about . To ease the side effects , chew gum , flavored chew sticks ( can be found at a Caribbean store) , suck on mints ect. Also , see a dentist , have your teeth cleaned (not trying to be funny), Get a fresh start . Congrats on stopping it is probably the best thing you could have done for your health and body! Take a vacation with all that you will save :-)
Congrats again and I hope this advice helps you !
Congratulations! You have already done it. Just don-t start back again.
My mom chewed lots of gum... I worked out... My sister B*****d all the time.... You do it your own way... Right before I quit I would start telling myself how nasty those smell, then I would really confess myself, to the point of almost vomiting, I have tried to smoke once again, and cant because I get this nasty taste in my mouth... Just think of the thing you hate the most in the world to eat, like liver... and imagine you are eatting that and you will get that taste in your mouth every time! Try IT!!!!

Ne home remidies on how to quit smoking? -

so iv been smoking for about a year and i really wanna quit so is there ne thing that you know of that actually works like home remidies or ne thing else please help lol
Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

Quitting smoking does not require any patches, gums, hypnosis or anything like that. These methods are expensive, time consuming and simply do not work. All that is required is a bit of motivation, self belief and determination.

Visit our blog for more information and to download our free book.

Good Luck and Good Quitting

Drink lots of cold water. It-ll help flush your system out. You can get some lobelia extract and add it to your tea. Follow the directions. For some reason it helps with cravings. Get lots of sleep and eat right. Your body will detox and you-ll feel the effects. I was tired a LOT, and super crabby. I had insomnia too. You can take Benadryl or melatonin to get your sleep on schedule. You can also go to a site like quitnet.com. They helped me a lot. The bottom line is that you have to want to stay quit more than you want to smoke.
everytime u want a ciggarrette..take a plain straw..hold it between the 2 fingers and inhale and exhale....it helped my aunt quit smoking..if that dont work..get TONS of suckers..everytime u want a ciggarrette..suck on a sucker..it helped my step brother quit...u could try some of that niccorette gum stuff too. along with the straw if needed. good luck. and congrats on the decision to stop smoking :)
Get some fire runnin in the fireplace, throw ALL your cigarettes in, sit down and watch.

Then, never buy cigs again. I can-t really stop you from buying them though.

will power is the only way

I quit smoking 4 months ago and guess what happened? -

I put on over 30lbs - i have tried everything, starting with starving, then tried an expensive gym membership, have now bought my own stationery bike and am a member of weight watchers. I-ve lost .4lb in the last 4 weeks yipee - now I have just bought kevin trudeau-s weight loss book - please tell me have I just wasted $50.00 or does this work.
it true. you try distract yourself from smoking a cigarette by eating.
You were using smoking for oral gratification and giving up smoking must have increases stress levels and made your weight go up. Since I have not read that book, no comment. If you find it useful, fine, else donate it to a library.
You just wasted $50 for info you can get free on the internet.
firstly, congratulations on giving up smoking - much better for your health!

Secondly, this won-t make you feel any better, but weight loss is pretty simple - just burn off more calories than you take in. I-d suggest doing regular cardio at the gym (say most days, or every other day) to burn calories, and weight training to increase your muscle mass and therefore your metabolic weight (every other day would be good). If you do this for a week or two and you-re not losing weight, eat less Calories and/or do more cardio (upto say 30-45mins per day); repeat until you-re losing 1-2lb/week. And yes, that is easier said than done. This site is good for general advice on exercise/diet -
http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php

Thirdly, I-m afraid you-ve wasted 50bucks on the book. Trudeau-s advice is largly stupid, sometimes dangerous - don-t touch with a barge pole. At least you can avoid wasting any more money buy not buying the junk natural -cures- the bloke recommends.
most of the time, quitting smoking makes people gain weight at first, then u gotta start watching ur eating habits, and stick to regular excercises, if u say u spend all this money, expensive membership, etc., then u should do fitness as well as cardio, like running, and/or walking. in this way will also help u get u breathing better faster, specially for a former smoker
I quit smoking and didn-t gain any weight. In fact, I lost about 10 pounds.
I wouldn-t say you wasted your money but I think you should have done your research on quitting smoking. I did and I found that you gain weight when you quit smoking. Trust me your energy wasn-t wasted in quitting. Use the book and keep trying and the weight will come off.
I quit and put on about 40 pounds. My doctor told me I was better off with the extra weight.
I have since lost that weight by taking up a healthy lifestyle. Mountainbiking, ultra running, triathlons and such and I-m in my forties. So just don-t give up and don-t go back to smoking.
Hang in there. I quit smoking and gained 70 pounds in a year using food to substitute for my nicotine addiction. I then made up my mind to lose the weight and I just ate 4 oz of steak and a glass of orange juice everyday for 7 weeks. My doctor was really mad at me. You don-t need to be so drastic. Just watch what you eat and continue to exercise and your metabolism will eventually straighten up. As an incentive put the money you used to spend on cigarettes in a coffee can or even the bank and when you lose the weight you can buy yourself something nice. Keep up the good work. I-m proud of you!
First of all, Congratulations on quitting smoking!

My boss at work quit smoking also yet she did not gain ANY weight.

She told us that she has been following the tips she obtain from this fitness expert on the internet.

I listed the website for you below.

She said to lose weight...you need to burn the fat.

I hope the following website and tips will be helpful to you.

Keep up the good work!

HOw do I quit smoking without eating too much? -

try chewing on something.other than the nicotine part of smoking it is part oral fixation too.
excercise is good!
I went to the local farmer-s market and bought a big bag (20 lb) of small pecans. They both keep my hands busy and they provide healthy nutrition instead of the other junk I have taken in past attempts. By buying the small pecans, and I do mean the ones that are too small to go into most commercial offerings, I bought them cheaply and have to do a lot of work for very little food.

That was my solution. Hope it works for you.

Regards and good luck.
Chantix, the new Rx drug
Depending on where you live, look up Laser Concepts. It is a pain-free procedure that cost me $300 the first treatment. If for any reason you feel the need to pick up a cig call them and they will give you another treatment as long as you don-t smoke a cig. You have the option of getting three treatments after the first one for free within a six month period from the first time you got the treatment. I tried it and I stopped smoking without gaining any weight. You don-t have the feeling that you are missing something and that is why most people gain weight because they turn to food. Good Luck!
Try replacing the cigarette with gum.

That-s how I quit. Sugar free gum all day long.
I-m in the midst of quitting after 12+ years...

gum and mints help and can be low calorie... I-m using small bottles of water that will help me to lessen my appetite, it-s healthy, and it gives me something to replace the hand to mouth motion that is so habitual.
Try sigars!
Most importantly by contolling your silver ware.
Exercise - every time you want a cigarette, go for a run tell the need is gone. The more you exercise the less you will feel the need to smoke, and the less weight gain you will have.
My BF is using the Nicoderm CQ patch and it-s working great for him! When I quit, I chewed sugar free gum. :)
Keep loads of HEALTHY snacks around at home, work, in the car, where ever you usually smoke.

DO NOT buy the ho ho-s and cupcakes...stock up on carrots, celery, peanuts....etc.

Also, try the inhaler that you use like a cigarette...that seems to help the -oral fixation- aspect of smoking.
try nicotine patch or chewing-gum or else u can undergo councelling.
But remember -Smoking reduce the weight......yes destroy one lung at a time-
Use a patch- that will curb the nicotine cravings.
Start taking walks- physical activity will not only curb the food and cigarette cravings, but it will help your body detoxicate.
Also, buy one of those grip balls that you can squeeze, and use it whenever you-d smoke out of boredom.
Also, keep fresh carrots, celery, apples (crunchy veggies and fruit) handy and clean, so that you can munch on those if you really need to eat something between meals.
Good luck!
I noticed a lot of good answers on here, the exercise is perfect, if you aren-t an active person that doesn-t want to exercise, the gum works well, just buy lots of your favorite gum, and every time you want a cig, grab a piece of gum. My smoking trigger was the telephone, I could not talk on the phone without a cig, so try to avoid situations that make you want to smoke, brushing your teeth, or washing your hands also helps, when you get that urge for a cig, leave the room brush your teeth, wash your hands, they say the urge for a cig goes away in about 5 minutes, so try to keep busy doing something else for those 5 min. Food tastes so much better when you aren-t smoking so do keep around healthy snacks, or crushed ice worked for me, get a cup of ice and crunch away, The 3rd day, and the 3rd week are the hardest to get over. Good Luck!!!!
I lost weight and found it hard to eat when I quit. But I lose weight when under stress.
Drinking water helped me when I quit... for 2 months :)
Tape your mouth shut. no cigs or food can go in that way!
I am going through this right now, because I quit smoking. Instead of eating alot of junk when I crave a cig I usually just chew some gum or suck on mints and jolly ranchers.

http://www.rfshieldbox.com

Purchase a nicotine removing filter[s],or cartridge. Use this with your regular cigarettes, through several packs. Next, try chewing a nicotine gum solo. If you can-t do it alternate back and forth until you can. Finally diet on sugar free pudding pops and fruit juice bars combined with an otherwise high protein-low carb menu with the nicotine gum as long as you need. Tip:When you master this try cinnamon hot gum etc. and various cough lozenges.

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

I have tried cold turkey and I go ballistic.. besides patches and pills, what are some creative ways you have done it?
I saw a hypnotist do it once.

After he had the smoker hypnotized he told him that the next time he lights up a cigarette it was going to taste like horse$hitz.

It worked long enough for the guy to quit successfully.

.
Sorry... been there... no solution but determination and cold turkey. Not a bad idea to remove yourself from temptation to help... maybe a camping trip where you simply can not get smokes.... first three days (day three, especially) the worst... after that, the craving gradually diminishes BUT... back to square one... you have to be determined to stop. All the best - it is worth it!
it reminds me if starting a diet theres never a good time just choose a day and
start another habbit to keep your mind off of it
Try the nicotine gum. It doesn-t taste very good and it turns into a hard piece of rubber after a while. Also, if you chew a piece a lot, the nicotine eventually ends up getting into your stomach and making you feel kind of nauseous.

Eventually, you-ll stop craving the nicotine, because you can-t stand the way the gum tastes and makes you feel. Then, one day, stop chewing the gum (takes about a week or two). You-ll suddenly realize that, not only do you not feel like chewing the gum, you have no craving for a cigarette, either.

Also, what you can do in addition to the gum is to cut back on the number of cigarettes you have each day leading up to the day you -quit-, substituting the gum for the missing cigarette. At some point (a coupla-few days), just make the decision to stop smoking and just chew the gum. It gives you a softer landing.
March of last year my partner and I had low level laser therapy, it cost £33 ($66) each here in the UK, on a basic level the laser pulse switches off the nervepaths which cause nicotine addiction to hold in the brain, i walked in smoking 60 a day, even had one just before i went in, walked out 20 minutes later a non-smoker. Neither me nor my girl have had a smoke since. One of the health boards ran a pilot scheme for employees and found 60% stopped completely against around 10% for tradition methods.

What I really want are some good reasons to stop smoking besides the obvious!!! I dont know, I havent had a ciggarette all day today, and I need to know how to keep from going crazy. How long before the cravings go away?????
Quiting nicotine is one of the hardest things I have ever done, but even harder than quiting is staying off of it. It is so hard to be around friends that smoke, and if your like me, you like smoking when you are drinking alcohol or coffee. The only thing that really works is a strong desire to quit. You just have to quit for your self, you are the only one strong enough to do it, you will never be able to do it if you are doing it for someone else! Good luck!!
i smoke but im not addicted to it.
i know that its hard to quit for people that are addicted. ive watched my dad he went crazy. anyways. you could throw your cigarettes and lighters away, try to stay away form the ones that smoke for a while. drink alot of water, eat regulary and exercise. find things to do. to keep you busy . hope my advice helped
If you-re young honestly I can-t give you any good reasons. I only quit when I got old enough to start having health problems. But cold turkey is the way to go. The patch just infuses you with the chemical you are trying to break from. I have never understood that.
your answer is in the site in my sources
Im trying to quit as well its hard but try this web site http://www.anti-smoking.org/?gclid=CL-91ObjjJkCFRxNagodVX7DnA.
They have alot of info and its a good read. GOOD LUCK!!
Well, my friend the best reason that you can tell yourself is smoking will end your life prematurely.

I want to quit smoking marijuana but I dont know how to do that . Can you advise me ? -

I want to quit smoking marijuana but I dont know how to do that . Can you advise me ? -

I am not a very big smoker.
I was once a heavy pot smoker (daily). Then I reached a point in my life where it was time to move on -- not necessarily from the marijuana, but just in life generally. I moved out of state, got a new job, and made new friends. I did not take any marijuana with me, and I made no efforts to try to acquire any in my new home.

For years, I had convinced myself that I was addicted. Any time I went more than a few hours without getting high, I felt empty, agitated, anxious, depressed... I spent over a quarter of my life either getting high or trying to get high (from the age of 15 to the age of 24), not to mention all the money I spent on the stuff (only smoked top grade hydroponic, which as you may know is NOT cheap). I always just assumed that I would never quit.

Of course, I had never actually TRIED to quit before. I still firmly believe that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, and should be legalized and regulated by the federal government in the same way that alcohol and tobacco are. I did not have any reasons to quit -- I have no criminal record, my job at the time did not conduct drug tests, I had plenty of money to support my habit, I had no health problems, and it was not interfering with my personal or social life. My only real problem (aside from the short term memory loss, the -munchies-, and a few other minor side effects) was the powerful psychological addiction that the plant had over me.

When I made the decision to change the course of my life and break off all ties to my old acquaintances, I decided also to break off my ties to marijuana. I had thought it would be an exercise in futility; for nearly a decade, I had relied upon marijuana for my emotional stability. I had grown up with somewhat of a rough childhood (parents divorced at a young age, grew up in poverty, had a physically and mentally abusive stepfather, socially awkward in my younger years, etc.), which is why I felt the need to self-medicate. I had no idea what sort of mental or emotional breakdown I might suffer from giving up marijuana cold turkey.

For the first few days without it, I slept alot. I ate alot. I spent alot of time doing the things that I had liked to do when I was high, and I found that I could still enjoy them even without being intoxicated. To my surprise, I didn-t think about getting high as much as I had thought I would. I had no way of getting my hands on any weed in my new home anyway, so pining over it would have been futile. Besides -- it-s marijuana, not crack cocaine. I wasn-t about to go lurking in the streets looking for a back alley pot dealer. That would be stupid and pathetic, not to mention dangerous. That-s the sort of thing that meth or heroin might make you do, but it-s NOT something you do to acquire marijuana.

In less than a week, my psychological cravings had nearly disappeared entirely. I never once suffered any physical withdrawals. Just like that, I gave it up and never turned back. I could now turn down even the most potently delicious ganja passed in my direction without even a moment of hesitation.

It-s not that I-m afraid to get high again, or even that I don-t think that I would enjoy it -- I-m sure it would be great fun, and I-m not about to promise that I will never ever smoke again. But it-s been over 5 years since I last touched the stuff, and I see no reason to go back to it now.

I notice that one person suggested you turn to alcohol as a replacement. Um, yeah... really stupid idea. You-d be better off smoking pot than drinking your job, your liver, your family, and your driver-s license away. Having a few drinks here and there on the weekends and having a glass or two of wine with dinner is one thing; making heavy drinking a habit is another. Take it from me -- marijuana may rob you of your motivation, but alcohol will rob you of everything else. I also dealt with that addiction in my teen years. Not only is alcohol more addictive, more destructive, and worse for your health (when taken in excess), but it is also physically -- not just psychologically -- addictive. The worst alcoholics can actually die from the withdrawal symptoms -- literally, not metaphorically.

Trust me on this one -- quitting marijuana is a piece of cake compared to trying to quit anything else. I-d have a harder time giving up donuts, coffee, gambling, or video games than I did giving up marijuana. You say you are not a very big smoker? Well, I WAS a big smoker... I smoked more in one day than most full-time stoners smoke in a week. If I can give it up without any trouble, ANYBODY can. Just put it down, pass the joint along to somebody else, and remind yourself that you don-t need it. Peer pressure is bull****, don-t give in to that crap. If your friends try to pressure you to smoke, just kindly point out that when you don-t partake, that just leaves more weed for them to smoke. If they-re true friends, they-ll eventually stop trying to get you to smoke.

You can still be friends with them even after giving it up -- in fact, I encourage it. That way, you can test yourself to see if you have the willpower to turn it down when it is right there in your face. Remind yourself that it is not addictive and that you don-t want or need it anymore. Of course it is fun and it feels good, but as you say, you WANT to quit. Which means that obviously, you-ve had enough of the silly intoxicating fun and the mellow kick-back-and-do-nothing feelings. It was fun for a while, now it-s time to take up a new hobby. It-s just a matter of saying -I-m done- and meaning it. Simple as that.

It-s not hard to not smoke. The only hard part is telling yourself that you will never ever smoke again while you reminisce on how great it feels to be high. Much like they say in Alcoholics Anonymous -- one day at a time. Don-t tell yourself that you will never smoke again -- just tell yourself that you do not need to smoke today. And tell yourself that same thing again tomorrow. And the next day, and the next, and the next. Don-t spend a whole lot of time thinking about how good it felt to get high, or wondering about what kind of wild and crazy parties you might be missing out on. Eventually you will find that you no longer crave it, or even think about it at all. And you will find that life has plenty of fun and good feelings to offer on its own, without having to rely on a chemically induced state of euphoria. You will learn to appreciate the simple things, and to get -high- on life itself.

Best of luck. Put it down and don-t turn back. I promise you, it won-t hurt, and the cravings will be gone before you know it. Peace brotha, take -er easy, live long and prosper, and all that jazz.
Don-t do it—it isn-t supposed to be addictive..
Get a new hobby.

Have you considered weight training?

Bromeliads?

Just changing your life-style so you can work yourself into making money and buying a yacht someday?

Good luck. Reality takes focus, and you can-t find it in the bottle and you can-t find it in a weed.
ok im 24 and smoked for along time the only thing that worked for me was to seperat my self from the thingks that present the habit to you like friends ect harsh but its the only way to stop and not go back sorry
Just dont smoke it anymore and you will be cured.
i used to smoke every day all day...i couldn-t watch a movie unless i was high because it just didn-t seem interesting enough...first thing i did...stopped hanging out with my pot head friends...thats the hardest thing...immediatly spend the money you were gonna spend on pot on something else or save it....i-m a girl so i spent my reefer money on make up and body wash...lol...keep busy with things that use pot use to keep you from doing...like i couldn-t play pool if i was too stoned...now i play on the time...when you quit smoking...try to improve other parts of your life to...when i put down the smoke i also started eating healthy and exercising everyday and only drinking water...get it in your head that you want to be better.
STOP! Just say NO. Find a Healthy HIGH
An ANTI-drug.
1. Stop purchasing the ganja.
2. Stop rolling the spleefs with the ganja you already have.
3. Don-t light the spleefs you-ve already rolled.
4. Don-t inhale.

Simple as dat, mon!
i use to be a big stoner and it was fairly easy for me to quit. since you-re not a very big smoker, it shouldn-t be any trouble.

1. distance yourself from those that use

2. gradually quit (quitting upbruptly is almost impossible)

3. have a positive attitude and self confidence.

you have any urges, try something different like getting laid or drinking. and every time you wanna spark up, remind yourself how long you went without smoking...i used to remind myself like that and always thought of how i wasted all that time trying to get clean only to do it again.

but seriously, if you-re -not a very big smoker- it should be no problem.
don-t get it to ur home, stay away from it.
if ur fiends are taking ask them also to stop. if they don-t stay away from them.
just concentrate on what u does.
avoid thinking of the same.
Get it out of your house and stay away from people who do it. I wasn-t a very big smoker either and I quit because they random drug test all the time where I work. It-s really more psychologially addictive than phsysical.
gradually then suddenly
there-s nothing in weed that is physically addictive. the only addiction is a mental one. so unless you-re a pansy, then you should be able to simply just stop. did you know weed adds estrogen to your body? so maybe you are a pansy....just quit.
It takes a great deal of dedication if you are addicted. Since it is illegal there are no patches to help.

My advice would be get a supportive friend to help you. Anytime you have a craving call that friend and have them help you through it. Don-t put yourself in tempting situations (parties with pot, etc.) and stay away from those who do it while you are quitting. Change your routine. If you normally smoke pot Friday nights, start a movie night instead or go to dinner with friends. If you smoke after school, join a club or play a sport. Fill up the time!

Seriously, though, I wish you all the best. E-mail me if you need help.
Don-t put the J to your lips. It is that simple.
First decide you are going to quit and then Do it !. Take some responsibility and pride and do something that isn-t pleasant, but certainly isn-t hard....it-s a choice and you don-t need months of therapy, meds, rehap to do it. Get used to the fact some things in life aren-t the easiest but you don-t need to hold somebodys hand to do it....or have an orchestra full of sympathy. At least you want to quit. That-s great. Just get out of the co-dependant/dependant/helpless victim mentality that is so rampant these days. Take some pride in your ability to make decisions, be responsible for them and have the guts to take on life without crutches.
I say try quiting cold turkey. I found that when I stopped I didn-t really have any cravings for it. It-s more the social part that made me want to smoke. So i say don-t buy any weed, and avoid going places where there will be a lot of it. But it-s not like you-ll have to give up your social like all together. If you-re friends are smoking, go for a walk for ten minutes. Don-t try to stick around when they do it, the temptation might be to much. It worked for me. Good luck.
I want to quit smoking marijuana but I dont know how to do that . Can you advise me ? -
