I have quit smoking. What can I do to both ease the side effects and help my body recover from years of abuse? -

Don;t be afraid to get medication for the side effects. nicotine is a powerful drug.

Just stopping helps your body recover! Look at this timeline:

20 minutes:
Blood pressure drops to normal; pulse rate drops to normal; increased circulation in hands

8 hours:
Oxygen level in your blood increases to normal; carbon monoxide level in your blood drops

24 hours:
Your chance for a heart attack has already gone down.

48 hours:
Your ability to smell and taste is already improved; walking is becoming easier.

2 weeks to 3 months:
Your circulation has improved. No more cold hands and cold feet. Your lung function has already increased up to 30%.

1 month to 9 months:
You-ll notice that coughing, sinus congestion and shortness of breath have decreased dramatically. Cilia have re-grown in your lungs increasing your ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs and reduce infection.

1 year:
Your risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half.

5 years:
Risk of stroke reduced to that of a nonsmoker. Risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus cut in half. Risk of lung cancer reduced in half compared to a smoker.

15 years:
Congratulations! Your risk for coronary heart disease and stroke is the same as for a lifelong nonsmoker.
LOL

I quit 55+ years and 5 packs a day

It took over 14 months before I started feeling better

This includes cardio pulmanory rehab
Good job. A big mistake people make is to try to ease the withdrawals.
Live with the side affects (for a short time) to truly understand just how powerful a drug nicotine is. Months from now, you-ll know why you quit and have no desire to start again.
yea probably unless u want 2 keep goin and get lung cancer...
Drink lots of water , exercise and eat a balanced diet.
You can reverse some things that smoking has cause , however somethings cannot be reversed but can be stopped. My advice to you is , get a full physical and see what comes about . To ease the side effects , chew gum , flavored chew sticks ( can be found at a Caribbean store) , suck on mints ect. Also , see a dentist , have your teeth cleaned (not trying to be funny), Get a fresh start . Congrats on stopping it is probably the best thing you could have done for your health and body! Take a vacation with all that you will save :-)
Congrats again and I hope this advice helps you !
Congratulations! You have already done it. Just don-t start back again.
My mom chewed lots of gum... I worked out... My sister B*****d all the time.... You do it your own way... Right before I quit I would start telling myself how nasty those smell, then I would really confess myself, to the point of almost vomiting, I have tried to smoke once again, and cant because I get this nasty taste in my mouth... Just think of the thing you hate the most in the world to eat, like liver... and imagine you are eatting that and you will get that taste in your mouth every time! Try IT!!!!
