Do you really gain weight when you quit smoking? -

im on my second day of not smoking and it hasnt been hard so far. ive heard people saying how they put on weight when they quit. i dont want that to happen as im in the process of losing 10 pounds.
so is it true??

also what are some good techniques to keep me away from food?

thanks for taking the time to read this and answer
First, congratulations for making the decision to get your life back and quit smoking and for making it this far. When I quit 19 years ago, it helped for me to stay busy and try not to be around smokers. When you get the urge, take a walk or eat carrots or celery. Some claim that quitting leads to weight gain, but that is because they are replacing one addiction(smoking) for another(eating). Stick with crunchy fruits and veggies - they are healthy for you and your jaw will get tired and you won-t want to keep eating. Keep active and keep your hands busy. Keep telling yourself that you are not only saving your life but you will improve your quality of life and prolong it as well. I wish you great luck on your journey!
Smoking supresses your appetite, so when you stop smoking you have more of an appetite, which is why many quitters eat more and therefore gain weight. You can fight this by not eating all the time (stay healthy, though) and exercising. As for avoiding food, whenever you feel the urge to snack, do something to distract yourself. After a few minutes you probably won-t feel as hungry. You could chew gum, too. You don-t need to go around feeling hungry all the time, though - stock up on healthy snacks so that when you do eat between meals you-re not ruining your diet plans. Good luck quitting!
Hi, the idea that you gain weight when you stop smoking is not entirely true and it can definitely be avoided, although the majority of smokers do gain weight just because of the fact that your body is trying to break a strong habit (smoking) so it tries to cope with it by taking on another habit (eating). The only reason I know this for a fact is that my dad has been a smoker for almost all his life and he did gain quite a bit of weight while trying to quit. Just think outside of the box.... Your body would probably settle for something else just as easily such as chewing sugar free gum. Well, I hope it helps, and the best of luck on quitting smoking.

Some people say that you-re gonna gain weight once you quit smoking. I-m not sure if there-s scientific basis behind that. As long as you stay fit and active your weight will do just fine. Try to set a new routine, such as working out or going to the gym. If that isn-t possible, you should try waking up earlier and going for a short walk. If you can turn that walk into a run or a jog, it is going to be very stimulating and the best way that you can start your day.

When you decide to stop smoking, you-ll bring on other changes in your life as well. Smoking is a very addictive habit, meaning that, for others, it is very hard to quit. There are a lot of changes that take place, although exercise can be a big help to you when you decide to quit.
lots of studies have been done and they say that smoking has no direct effect on losing or gaining weight

the only idea out there is that the nicotine can suppress and appetite, but then again, green tea is supposed to do that too, but people take it in pill forms and still stuff their face wondering why they-re gaining weight

some studies suggest that the smoking actually screws with the way your body stores fat and can cause you to GAIN weight

everyone-s body reacts differently, if you-re aiming to lose weight, then quitting may very well help you, especially if you-re making healthy food choices and working out

you should not try to -keep away- from food, that will just make you more hungry, and more likely to over eat

just chose healthier meals and get your body moving every now and then, drink lots of water too!
It can be true.. though the weight gain is generally minimal. Nicotine will increase the bodies metabolism, so the lack of it may result in some weight gain However, if you are already in the process of losing weight, the impact should be minimal.

The health benefits from quitting smoking far outweigh the cocerns over the minimal increase in weight.
yes it can happen because smoking actually helps you loose weight and when you quit you won-t be losing weight anymore.
Don-t avoid food, just keep exercising.
It doesn-t always happen to everyone actually I know people who quit and nothing happened. No weight was gained at all.
Umm I don-t think there is any real evidence of gaining weight after quitting smoking. I think people just get depressed from the lack of nicotine and don-t bother doing any physical activities but this is only temporary. Maybe trying those protein shakes will help with keeping away from food.
yea. it sucks but smoking is good for keeping off weight.
