Why do most people gain weight after they quit smoking? -

is it because they eat or.... something else? i am trying to quit. I-ts been day to and ive smoke a cig and a half. i am on the patch and i must say the cigerette i smoked tasted like DIRT. so if i quit will i gain weight and why? or again is it because most people turn to food after quitting?
Cigarettes actually suppress the appetite. Therefore, when you quit smoking your appetite comes back. In some cases people do turn to food to take their minds off of their cravings. Just being aware of this possibility will help you to control it more. I commend you for quitting. Good Luck. And remember, a few extra pounds is better than lung cancer any day.
all the people above me have stated tha exact truth.. smoking cigarettes is a hand to mouth motion and when you quit you have to fulfil that hand to mouth motion still.. thats the addiction. so any other hand to mouth motion that will take place of the cigarette is the substitute.. (like eating). thats my take on it..
They eat to compensate for the absence of cigarettes Plus cigarettes are an appetite suppressant anyway.
Coming off cigarettes you are likely to feel hungrier.
because people eat to find a new addiction cos that what smoking was, they would always rely on it and now they need something else to feel the void
If you gain a few pounds while going through the process of quitting tobacco, so be it. The benefits will affect your life as well as those who love you in more ways than you can imagine. You can quit smoking without gaining a lot of weight. Don-t let the fear of weight gain keep you chained to an addiction that will kill you, given the chance.
Weight can be lost, lungs cannot.
Smoking increases metabolism slightly:
Smoking burns up to 200 calories a day in a heavy smoker
Because smoking burns calories, metabolism is boosted (increased) slightly
Nicotine is an appetite suppressant
When you quit smoking, a gain of between 5 and 10 pounds during the first few months of cessation is normal. If your eating habits have remained the same as they were when you smoked, you can easily shed this small gain with a brisk, 30 minute walk daily.
Studies have shown that women are at greater risk than men for returning to smoking as a way to avoid weight gain. Understanding what happens to our bodies when we quit smoking, and what we can do to alleviate discomforts in constructive ways that do not involve weight gain will help you stay on track.
Sometime food is a replacement for smoking and you feel a little satisfied but if you really want to quit you just have to stop and consider all the bad things smoking can cause, I think if you are sincere about quitting cigarettes that you can do it , You can smell when someone is a smoker when you are not smoking because the smoke clings to your clothes,
