I quit smoking at the new year and now have a nasty, phlegmy cough- is this normal? -

when you smoke you kill all the cilia in your throat which normally move and sway to push all the phlegm and crap up away from your lungs. Think of this as a good sign, they are starting to regain consiousness and push all the crap back where it came from.

Jan. 7, 2010 (in 1 year) : Your risk for heart disease is half that of a smoker-s.

Jan. 7, 2014 (in 5 years) : Your risk of having a stroke is the same as someone who doesn-t smoke.

Jan. 7, 2019 (in 10 years): Your risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a smoker-s. Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas also decreases.

Jan. 7, 2024 (in 15 years) : Your risk of heart disease is now the same as someone who doesn-t smoke.

Your doing great, keep going!!
I don-t know how long you have been smoking for, but it will be your lungs getting rid of all the gunk you have swallowed over the length of time you have been smoking.

My husband and I know of a lot more people in the same situation that have stopped smoking and cannot get rid of this nasty phlegmy cough, my husband stopped smoking 5 years ago and is now under the doctor for Emphysema due to the damage done to his lungs from smoking.

Another friend who stopped smoking had the same problem but never went to the doctors about it, could not take the coughing and feeling ill anymore and went back to smoking and she is now fit and well. But who knows for how long, but she said she was willing to take the chance as her life was not worth living because of the way she felt when she stopped smoking.

My husband is so sick of being breathless, coughing and bringing up nasty stuff that he even contemplated smoking again, up to now he hasn-t but he is getting desperate as before he stopped smoking he was fit and well and once he stopped his health went down hill.

We honestly don-t know what is best, everyone says stop smoking for health reasons, who knows if he had never smoked he might have been ok now or if he had carried on smoking he might have been dead now. We will never know, all we do know is that our lives have been turned upside down now due to smoking as he cannot go out in cold weather or walk uphill, we have to plan our days out or see what the weather forecast is before we do anything.

If you have not been smoking for long you should be able to get rid of all the gunk without any after effects I truly hope you can.
Yes - that will last for ages - indeed, be prepared for it to get worse until all the shite you-ve been pumping into your lungs has gone and then suddenly after quite a few months you-ll realise that you-re not coughing your guts up every morning. I know what I-m talking about - I used to smoke 100+ a DAY then stopped dead before I dropped dead !
Yep, your coughing up the fruit of your indulgence, nice? tasty? Stick it out, And remember, the cravings will get easier.
Yep. Expect flu like symtoms etc too.... ur just releasing toxins - stuff... by giving up, you are already increasing your life expectancy.

Remember cravings come in 3-s. You-ll get them every 3 hours - they last for 3 mins (apparently!)
You could have a non related infection, but I would say it is the little cilia growing back and working their magic to bring about healthy lungs.
all that rubbish thats came off the smoking is now coming back up . keep it up and you can have a healthy chest .. i quit 5 months ago
Yes it`s normal, getting rid of the rubbish....
Yes, they-re getting rid of all that nasty stuff you-ve been forcing on them.
Yes, Its normal - Will clear after a while.
