Best ways to quit smoking? -

my boyfriend has been smoking for at least 10-12 years now. he smokes about a pack a day, full flavor cigarettes. he tried nicotine gum but that only made him want to smoke more. any suggestions?
As long as he-s willing to stop smoking, that-s the first and most important part. If he-s at that point, then congratulations to you both! ;-)

As far as answering, there are a lot of ways, and it also depends on how much he-s been smoking. The best ways are slowly lowering the dose (which takes a long time sometimes), or going cold turkey (which is faster, but harder). Either way, the last thing is making the decision to quit, so he-ll eventually have to deal with the withdrawal.

For the most part, when you deal with withdrawal, you-ll just have to tough it out, but there are some things that can help cleanse out the toxins and may help to minimize some of the effects of withdrawal...
Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it-s not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get).

All that being said, it-s likely that the symptoms should stop relatively shortly after the last smoke (it-s never as long as it feels like it is). Your neurotransmitters don-t take too terribly long to scream for something they are addicted to after you stop.
Another important thing to note is that no matter how bad it gets, taking more of the drug (and yes, nicotine is a drug) will only make the withdrawal last longer and will be harder in the long run. Good luck, and congrats again!
I-ve been using a nicotine patch. They-re available over-the-counter at Wal-Mart and pharmacies. I was smoking 2 packs+ a day. I-m down to about 8 cigarettes a day and don-t have any irritability or other problems. I should be a non-smoker in another week or so.

I think the best way to quit is to cause the least amount of stress to the smoker AND the other people around them.

PS-I-ve been smoking for 38 years.
Reality? There-s no best way. There-s no sure way. If there was, it would be the biggest selling thing in the country (next to Big Macs). Most of the products out there are useless and a waste of time/money. Nicotine is tremendously addicting, and he would need to consult with a doctor and also have it in his head to do this.

If he-s able to both physically and mentally quit, and not kill somebody during the process, it speaks well for his ability to fix something that-s very difficult to do. Beware...the urge to light up again will nag at him for years.
cold turkey is the best way, it may be the hardest but its the best.

you-ll be irritable and all that good stuff, but after 3 days of having no nicotine, the withdrawals will subside, and then will be completely gone after about a week,
from there on, its all mental,

good luck!
i dont know what its called and i dont know where to get it but there are these magnet things that you put on your ear and apparently it gives your body the same feeling as smoking does try to look on the internet for them. ps. they are not very ccheap but they are worth the try
Used to smoke 200/day. Tried every method. Did not work. Quit cold turkey in 1967.
Never smoked again.
When he dies from lung cancer at 65, that-ll stop his smoking for good.
