How to quit smoking ....please help? -

My husband and I are both ready to quit smoking, the cost and are health are both factors.

We have tried, it didn-t work. Does anyone have any advice on how to help. Thanks
Nicotine is a drug and if you can just stop then thats great. If you have a lot of trouble then do what is advised for addictive drugs, taper off.
Everyone differs in the way their body copes with the removal of a drug, its down to metabolism and we-re all different.

Mouschi-s idea is a good basic plan, reduce the number of cigarettes by 1 a day - or maybe cut down by 5 initially as that is not so hard and will make you feel you-re getting somewhere straight away, then one per day after that.

Its a good idea to keep a written note of how you do each day and as you go down you-ll have worked out which times of the day you want to smoke the remaining number, which stops the panic.

If you slip up during your reducing and end up having an extra one, try and see it as -OK, I-ve smoked more than I was supposed to today, that was just a one off treat, tomorrow I-m going to be back on form- instead of thinking -I-ve messed up and I can-t do it-.

If you need to spend more that one day per a one cigarette drop, then do it that way - just set a time that YOU can cope reducing, the less stress you feel about cutting down, the more likely you are to be be able to get off them comfortably and permanently, and thats the aim in the end, however slowly you reduce.

If you keep an accurate notepad record throughout you-re able to see how successful you-ve been - even if you-ve had the extra one occasionally -and the jump off at the end will, by the time you get to the end, be more of a great feeling that you can do it, than the vague and terrifying one normally associated with giving up.

If you think you-ll need extra help to fill in some of the gaps between cigarettes, stock up with something to do that, whether its raw carrot or celery or fruit or even chewing gum - whatever does the trick for each of you. Plan it all out as far as possible in readiness for the start. Best of luck, but you won-t need that - you can do it. :)

PS: Please don-t even think of taking champix (or chantix - depending on where you-re from) if your GP suggests it, as there are already warnings of some nasty side effects
http://www.fda.gov/consumer/updates/chan…
and some suicides have taken place on the drug.
http://cbs11tv.com/investigators/chantix…
and in 2008 Chantix/Champix clocked up -...50 fatalities and 1,001 serious injuries in the first quarter of the year. Since its approval in 2006, the drug has been implicated in 112 fatalities and 3,325 serious injuries...-

There is only one way to stop smoking and that is -Will power- say that you are both going to stop smoking and don-t let any thing stand in the way, also if you both spent £10 a day on smoking then put that £20 a day in a jar were you can see it, after a month when you se how much you have save, then you won-t want to start smoking again, I paid the deposit on my house with the money I saved from smoking.
Ok, I will give you three advices, one of them will 100% help!

1. Nicorette - it helped to my friend, but after 1 year he started smoking again, tried this pell and 2nd time it didnt work.

2. Take a cigarette, put it into milk, and then place it somewhere in sunny place, so it could dry out. After it dries, smoke it! You will see results!

3. This one, I tried on myself, and I acctually did quit, but only for 6 month :) So, just smoke as many as u can!

Good luck!
Try calculating about how many cigs you smoke in one day. As each day goes by take one cig away. For example, say you smoke 15 cigs a day. The next day only allow yourself 14. It is important to only keep the specific amount of cigs each day. This way a secret stash of cigs won-t send you into a relapse. Eventually I found myself down to 1 cig and I knew right when I had to have it, after eating1 This did work for me. It was advice from my OBGYN. I believe it is possible to wean from cigs. All you can do is try! Good Luck! Be Strong!
To be honest I don-t think there is any guaranteed method of helping you to stop , patches , gum , hypnosis , and even acupuncture work for some but not for others.
All you can do is just stop buying cigarettes , if you don-t have them you can-t smoke them..you.just have to have the willpower to do it.
I had the same problem with alcohol , used to drink way to often and way to much...just said to myself Right No More !! Just stopped it
immediately and never have or never will drink again.

good luck : )

Hey at least both of you are trying to stop that helps .Good ole peer pressure .That-s how you got started ,right? The only people I know that have been successful went cold turkey. Remove all guns and knives, and razor blades before trying this! Some states have free st smoking hot lines . Good luck.
I got to get back to my bottle of scotch now!
Jai Ho... Nice answer from you!!!

My advice would be to put every penny you would have spent on fags into a jar, after a while count it up and go treat yourself!!

As for the initial giving up, speak to your doctor - They will give you lots of advice!
cold turkey is the proven, most effective method. 2nd is the patch. Best of luck to you. It-s really a great thing to do for you and your spouse.
Shock therapy. Works a treat. Nothing will get you off the fags faster than seeing the rotted lungs of a deceased smoker up close and personal. Speaking of which i-d better find my nicorettes.
You have to WANT to quit smoking. That-s the only way it will last. If you quit just because it is expensive, you will still feel the urge and will most likely come back once the price goes down.
There are three options you can choose from ,patches, sweets or gum. and will power
my cousin stopped smoking by chewing gum.

everytime you have the urge to smoke, chew a piece of gum.
NHS is the best place to start, good look if you contact them they will send you a dvd free
go on the pill
then you-ll get a stroke
that will make you stop
