Any tips on how to help a friend quit smoking? -
He wants to quit. I didn-t suggest it, he did, which I think is great. But I-m pretty much his only good friend that doesn-t smoke, so I-m trying to be there for him and help him through it. If anyone has any advice I-d appreciate it. Thanks!
I have quit five times. FIVE Times! I am currently on try number six and using the electronic cigarette. If your friend is truly a smoker, he is as addicted to the action of smoking as he is to the nicotine. Have him try the e-cig. If he wants to reduce his dependency on the nicotine, he can step down his nicotine cartridges till he is at zero nicotine.... just like the gum or the patch. But he STILL gets to smoke.
Now... when I say smoke, it is a little different. The electronic cigarette produces a vapor which can be seen. But as it is water based, it dissipates within seconds of entering the air. There is no smell.
By changing his habit, and not drastically, it will keep him calmer and make the switch something he can actually see himself sticking too. It is like with all of these diets that people go on. Sure you can loose weight, but can you keep it off once you stop paying for the meals? It-s all about taking your bad habit and replacing it with a good one.
I write a lot on these and there are a lot of places he can visit to get himself comfortable. The link below is a good starting point. It will take him to other links and other sources. They are legal in the US and available in several styles.
That-s one of the toughest addictions to break. A few of my friends used Chantix. It worked well, does something to break the addiction in the brain. They didn-t usually want to smoke after they took it, but when they did, they called the support line to get through the rough spots. They are some of the only people I know who quit and didn-t go back to it.
Try to get your friend to do things with you that don-t involve smoking. I know this isn-t a guy thing but take him to the mall or go to the movies. It will cut back some. Just give him as much support as you can and don-t criticize him if he falls back to smoking. I-ve been smoking for about 5 years now and it-s really hard for me to quit smoking. The thing that scares me the most is the thought of getting lung cancer. Maybe try and get him to a quit smoking program and support group.
Its diffcult no doubt u need to have a strong will power, thats just not enough the will power should be motivated.
