How long does it take for the lungs to clear after you quit smoking? -

I know there are a lot of questions about this answered already, but I want to know specifically about me. I-m fifteen and have been smoking since I was thirteen, give or take a half a pack a day. I -clipped- (put out and then re-lit hours later) most of my cigarettes. I quit today and I was just wondering, will my lungs completely heal from the damage?

Thanks for your time :)
Good for you!! Since you stopped so quickly after starting, and only have two years of damage you should recover well. usually they say you start to see the benefits of quitting a few days after, but it takes months and even up to 5 years before you get back to the same levels as non smokers.

You will notice a big change in your lungs though without smoke, no carbon dioxide in your blood will give you more energy in the next couple of days too. It will be a process, but keep off them and you-ll be good. You are so young your lungs should recover very well. Heck, they are not even done growing yet are they!
Good for you! that you decided to quit smoking. Your lungs will definitely recuperate from smoking for about 2 years. I started smoking since I was 16 years old and I quit when I was about 28 years old. It was a battle for me to quit. I had ups and downs. I-m 35 now and my lungs today are as healthy as someone who has not been smoking at all. Check out this site, it could interest you.

Yaaaa!!!! Good for you. You are young so this is on your side. You should heal well. But remember second hand smoke effects you too, so avoid this as well. Again, good for you.

my fiancee really wants to quit smoking for me and wants me to write up a plan on ho he can do it, but i-ve never smoked so i don-t know how to quit it! Help!
TELL him to pretend that the cigarette is a penis when he-s sucking on it, then he-ll get grossed out and quit because smoking is gay.
Freezer pops, like the ones from when you were little. You-d be surprised, but they really help kick the habit. it keeps your hands and mouth busy so you don-t feel like you need a cigarette. and they-re addicting all by themselves... so you-ll probably end up buying about a box a week. But it-s still cheaper than cigarettes! lol :)

Another trick, for in the car, is coffee straws. hold one between your fingers, chew on it, stick it in your mouth like a cigarette. Same goes for toothpicks. Smoking is a habit, more than an addiction. for me, the nicotine addiction isn-t as difficult to get over as the actual habit. Especially when I-m driving.

Another thing you might want to consider (if he wants to taper off from them) are those mechanical cigarettes they have out now. they look odd, but taste alot like a cigarette (though personally i think they taste like a mild cigar). theyre just alot better for you... if i remember correctly it-s just straight nicotine, without all those fun cancer causing chemicals.

I hope this helps!!
Hi Rose

I have found by myself and talking to others that the first physical addiction is the easiest part to get over actually. Its usually gone in a few days, BUT whats difficult is to break the HABIT and phycological addiction that can last for even years!

I have found one method that uses NLP and ANCHORING to be succesfull. It is straightforward and simple but requires some work, but it is FREE. It works by making you so tired of smoking you will never want to see a cigarette again!

Check out the link:

I too have tried many things and am about to try Chantix. Might look into it
Hi,
I have prescribed Chantix to many of my patients and so far am impressed with the results. You start with a tapering dose up to 1 mg twice a day. The first few weeks on it, you continue smoking until you no longer have the urge. Apparently the drug replaces nicotine within the brain. The stadard course of treatment is 4 months.

Having said that, it has been my experience that most people fail on the patch due to underdosing. A nicotine patch that is 21mg per day is the equivalent of one pack per day of cigs. If you smoke more than that you would need perhaps 1-1/2 or two patches per day.

Talk to your health care provider. Some insurances are starting to pay for Chantix.

Good luck,

I quit a little over a year ago-- COLD TURKEY.... the trick is you HAVE to trick your brain into thinking you ARE smoking by substituting the actions you took WHILE smoking with something else.... and without gaining weight in the process.. here-s what I did and it worked 100% for me.... I LOVE navel oranges... those big seedless ones with the thick skins.. So I bought TONS of them and whenever I craved a cigarette I grabbed an orange. The process of peeling it by hand, pulling apart the sections and then eating it section by section COPIED the actions I did with my hands AND mouth while smoking...my BRAIN was satisfied... Sometimes it would take 2 oranges...other times just 1. I would cut up a view oranges and put them in plastic baggies before going out in the car and grabbing pieces out of that baggie satisfied my desire to smoke IN THE CAR... I live ALL ALONE so the desire to smoke has ALWAYS been very strong with me and I was an almost 2 PACK A DAY smoker for 35 YEARS....within a WEEK and a half, I could cut down on the consumption of the oranges and did NOT miss the cigarettes....it-s been an entire YEAR now and I don-t miss them at all...... and haven-t gained even ONE POUND since I quit....

Have any of you quit smoking using chantix, the new pill out? -

Have any of you quit smoking using chantix, the new pill out? -

if you have, was it fairly easy to quit?
I have about 50 patients on Chantix. It is a useful tool. Though it is the most effective FDA approved smoking cessation medication, the major clinical trials demonstrate a 1 year quit rate of 22-24%. This is significantly better than placebo 12% or nicotine replacement 15% or Zyban 18%. The problem is not in getting smokers to quit (Our clinic has 1 month quit rates of 70-80%) but rather keeping them from doing something stupid (like picking up a cigarette) 6 months down the line.
I mention this to emphasize that you must be psychologically prepared to quit as well. You must learn to respect this addiction and realize that you will -always be 1 puff away from a pack a day-. Fear that first cigarette like an recovering alcoholic fears a drink.

Good Luck

Dr Voelker
coworker took it since Nov and just finished her series Successfully also her cravings have gone away
No, havn-t used that, I used nicoderm,no side effect. pills!!! I have my doubts, I took one, can-t remember the name, but the side effect were horrendous.
I quit over Two years ago with nothing but will power the cravings go away after seven days but the craving will never leave you have to be strong

I want to hear from people who have quit smoking using the patch...? -

I want to hear from people who have quit smoking using the patch...? -

My husband smokes a pack a day, he is trying to quit and I want to know if the patch will really help. He-s high strug, so he stresses very easily, then we visit his parents every weekend who are 4 pack a day smokers (that makes is harder for him to quit when he has tried in the past). Will the patch really work? I don-t want to spend a ton of money on something that won-t work.
I quit by using the patch a few years ago, but only for about 6 wks. I have a lot of stress, so I couldn-t maintain. Acupuncture helped a lot, but ended up not being effective in the long term either. I am starting the new drug Chantix on Monday (I have a bad cold right now so I-m waiting). My doc told me that everyone he has put on Chantix has been able to quit. He also said the likelihood of quitting using Chantix is 70%, versus 30% for the patch or gum. Chantix works by giving you a steady stream of endorphins (woo-hoo happy happy). The only side effects his patients mentioned was nausea, which subsided within 2-3 days. It is a 6 month program, but most people stop medication after about 3 weeks. I can-t wait to try to quit again!
this is not a good idea, but i have been quit for two years i started using skoal.
replacing a drug with another which is exactly the same doesn-t really make sense. think.. if your husband was a heroin addict would you give him heroin to quit? i believe that smoking in primarily a psychological addiction. try buying him Allen Carr-s Easyway to Stop Smoking or better still send him to one of the clinics which have a money back guarantee if you don-t quit. good luck.
Though I started smoking again because of awful things that happened in my life....the patch made me quit for a long time. It was a great help. Tell him to stay away from the family for five weeks though.....they will understand. Also......the patch is sold way cheap at Sam-s club if you have a membership?
The patch works.I gave up smoking 10 yrs. ago. However, the person who is trying to quit has to have the resolve -THAT I-M NEVER GOING TO SMOKE ANYMORE-,otherwise any method won-t work! The patch takes away that little voice inside that constantly reminds you how long it-s been since your last cigarette. You still have the habit for a while,though.There-s no panacea for quitting.Again, you have to be strong and WANT TO give it up!!
I used the patch. Worked for me. Started with the highest dose used for 2.5 months, then the next dose, used for 2 months then the lowest, used for 2 months and have been off of the patch and no cravings for 3 months now. It is expensive but when you compare to the health issues that can arise with smoking and the cost of smoking, it is well worth it for 6 months. Good luck.

What do u do if ur boyfriend wont quit smoking pot? -

What do u do if ur boyfriend wont quit smoking pot? -

Force him to make a choice: pot or you.
You could get yourself another boyfriend. This one just might not have much of a future in life.

The decision is entirely up to you.
leave him,he is being foolish. he knows how to smoke it but does he understand what it does to you/? he make think it takes his troubles away, but it dont,i know .my son wouldnt listen either. now i visit him,but cant talk to him, he is with god. please talk to him. it is wasted money. giving it to someone to destroy there lifes. i will pray for him.
The next time he is stoned mention things to him that are totally stupid and not to be believed because he will. Mess with his head. Then when he is not high ask him why he believes those crazy ideas. After several episodes he will either smoke more or tell you he needs to quit. When all is said and done... you might just want to start looking for a new guy.
If ya can-t beat him, join him.
Smoke his pot so that he won-t have any. He-ll have no choice but to quit
Make sure he learns how to run his own business because he will never get a good job working for any company.
Break up with him...Seriously pot is something u do for 1 reason to make urself feel better and it usually hurts everyone else bc its ppl do stupid stuff when they r high. I would not recommend dating anyone that was a regular user. It-s true 1 high leads to another.
Give him an ultimatum... If he really values he will quit. My friend-s ex-boyfriend quite pot, drugs, stealing, drug dealing and everything else so that he could date her and he was in love with someone else at the time.
my boyfriend smokes pot too....wat ive leaned to do is make a deal with ....like if hes comeing to see u then he cant smoke pot before he comes that way yall can both be happy 2 gether ....trust me it works
Get a new boyfriend. I mean, you are better than that aren-t you. I-ve been there, trust me, he-s not going to quit. It will be hard to break up and find someone new. Don-t settle for less- ever. The right one is out there.
I am not sure but i struggeled with it about four months ago. Then i had Five baby girls born and i just lost the desire when i realized there was more to life than that.

Maby you can say that you love him so much that it hurts you to see him like that and that he hurts all the people he loves when he does that.
i also sugest you help him sever all ties between him and his bad inflluences.
when you look good you feel good so maby take him shoping for some non thug looking clothes abercrombie, Old Navy, Or even just some collerd shirts.

I quit smoking 2 years ago and i still want a cigarette a lot of times,Will this ever stop? -

I smoked for about 25 years and im glad i quit but i still want a cigarette.
Hang on, danelover! I had my very last cigarette on October 16, 1998 and - some days more than others - it-s still hard for me to stay away from those things. I still have what I call -Relapse Dreams-. (Fortunately, those ebb in frequency as time goes by.)

Ahhhh, ....I still remember how it feels to have a cigarette after a great dinner.... ahhhh, especially Thanksgiving. ...Oh, dear. ...

Anyway! As diversion tactics, I carry around a bottle of water and take sips all day. While at work, I take bathroom breaks, quick trips to the mail room or copier, log on to Yahoo! for a minute or two, etc. Try to replace -The Habit- with something begnin or, the gods forgive, something HEALTHY!

Oooops, my 2 minutes are up! Good luck - Keep Smokeless, Sister!
unfortunatly,no but the craving will weaken.please hang in there and remember nicotine is harmful.think of how you feel now compared to how you felt then.
I-ve been there many times. It has to be your will power,
desire and determination to NOT take it. Think about all
those sickly people with all kinds of diseases on account of
smoking. Go on line and get info and some pictures of what it does to your lungs, heart, body and those around you.
And I also prayed that God would give me the strength to
quit and the courage to say NO!
I quit for 6 months and still wanted one every day, then one day I had one and started back up. I think it-s totally normal to still want one, but my hubby says you never have quit till you never smoke another. Best wishes
eat chocolate!!

he he he he
depends, try the patch to stop the urge
Once a smoker always a smoker, but stick with it don-t give in, you-ve done the hard part, it can only get better.
either chew nicotine gum, use a patch or smoke those fake cigarettes! never smoke again ewwww!!!!!!
That is normal, but don-t do it. It is hard to quit. Please pass this on to anyone who thinks they want to start.
I quit smoking in 1963 (November 15) after 11 years of smoking and I still like - more than like - the smell of a cigarette burning. I don-t move away when someone lights up near me. But I think that about 3 months is all it takes to kick it for good. I don-t see any danger in still wanting a cigarette. I think after two years you are beyond going back to it.
Are you using any -quitting aids- like the patch, nicotine gum? Anything containing nicotine? these things can be addictive, and leave you craving cigarettes. If not this could be psychological. You could try a hypnotist to break the habit built into your Psyche.
(I was a chain smoker, now the smell makes me sick. But I didn-t need help with this. I had convinced my self that being around smoke was making me sick, and I started showing physical symptoms)
It never really does but gets less and farther apart with the passage of time
Sure it will stop...

when you die.
I have a friend whose father hasn-t smoked in 20+ years (forgot, but it has been a LONG time.) He says he STILL has the urge every now - then. It decreased over time, but never totally went away.

Let that be a lesson for anyone who doesn-t smoke! Don-t start!
quit three years ago, still get cravings,
It-s normal, but you can-t give in to the desire to smoke. You have to think about your family and your friends. I don-t think they would like to see you hooked up to tubes and they-re planning your funeral because the doctors say you don-t have long to live. Please think about it, it could save not only your life, but someone else.

How did you quit smoking? -

I tried everything but I-ll retry something. I did use Chantix, the patches, the gums, hypnotism, smoking sensation classes, etc...
I read a book called, -The Easy way to stop smoking- By Allan Carr.
It should actually be called the simple way to stop smoking.
The book teaches you how to change your relationship with nicotine so that you can just stop.
It takes time for the principles to take hold in your mind but it really works.
Its really hard if you get into something.
Vices (smoking,drinking and etc.)
I suggest you to avoid thinking of ciggarettes even though its hard and avoid seeing ciggaretes cause it tempts you to smoke.

This is my suggestion if you really want to quit smoking.
:p
I went through my best friend losing a lung and it didn-t stop me. But when 5 years later I watched the doctors shove breathing pipes down her and ask me two days later if I had power of attorney to pull the plug. I never touched one again. I had smoked 3 to four packs a day for twenty years. I have now become the the worlds worst reformed smoker. Oh and she died a very painful death. So go to a hospital and visit someone who is a smoker .
Maybe you jsut realy want to smoke? Sounds psychological. My boyfriend quit with chntix if he can anyone can. He actually cried cause he said they were his friends.

Maybe you don-t really want to quit deep down, no one can change that but you.
when you want a cigarette just eat a candy and don-t think about it. take a small nap or something.
hope it helps. :) it helped me
I used the best method ever, I was never stupid enough to start.

Sorry, I realize that isn-t very helpful.

What are my chances to Quit smoking without any direct support,, I have no family or friends to help me.? -

congratulations on your decision to quit smoking. I have been a non-smoker for eight years now and it is the best thing you can do for your health.

First of all, you have to ask yourself why are you quitting smoking. I think it has to be for yourself. It-s for YOUR health, YOUR life, YOUR money. The desire to quit has to come from within. This is all about you.

Secondly, support from family and friends is great if you can get it but seriously sometimes they can be your worst enemy when it comes to things like this. I-m sure they don-t really mean it but I can remember my Mother laughing at me when I told her I was quitting and she said to me things like, -its really hard you know- and -maybe you should just cut down-. Sounds harmless enough but what I really wanted to hear was...-that-s great- or -good luck with that- and -when I quit this helped and that helped-. Lets face it you can-t always get the support you want or need.

Thirdly, contact a quit smoking helpline. They have lots of great ideas and tips. Tell everyone around you that you are quitting smoking and then tell them why. They might not openly support you but at least they can understand why.

Good luck with your quitting smoking. Remember, that the strength to achieve anything comes from within you.

PS. Welcome to the world of the healthy, non-smoker!!
its also an emotional addiction, as physical, so hold a cigarette in your fingers when the urge comes, without lighting it, so you withdraw physically FIRST THEN emotionally..... Best is to stop by will power... bind negative associations with the smoking part..... whenever you see something horrible think of smoking.... Hope this helps, take care
self determination and will power.
I was smoking 3-4 packs a day for 32 years..I QUIT IN 1 DAY!..2 years ago. i went to the hospital.. doctor said, quit or die.. i am on breathing treatments now but can-t walk from room to room.. i need breathing treatments to walk the dog but you know what? We have tried those nicotine pads before, all they do is give him strange dreams.
The best way is to ween yourself off. Cold turkey usually means driving you and others crazy to the point where you start up again. Just subtract a little off every week until you finally hit zero.
Threaten him with a gun.Cruel i Know but it is the quickest way possible.Cruel to be kind ya know.Or tough love lol Or whenever he wants or implies or has a cigarette ***** slap him and say NO.Like yourt talking to a dog.Naughty dad naughty. Now go to your room and thi9nk about what you-ve done.!lol

Do lungs heal after you quit smoking? -

I started smoking about 4 1/2 months ago, about a pack maybe a pack and a half on average. Every now and then like once every 2-3 weeks id go on a binge of 2-4 cigarettes ones after another. Im about to quit in a couple of days. Hopefully I haven-t done so much damage then again im still only 18
Information for yourself: Everyone has cilia in his/her throat that leads from the lungs to the mouth. You can think of cilia as little fingers that move back and forth, which carry mucus from your lungs to your mouth. Now smoking, can damage these cilia, it basically burns them away. Now why are cilia so important. You ever see people who smoke all the time and you hear them cough, very loudly? Well this is known as the smokers cough. Their cilia no longer work and therefore, they have to cough terribly hard and long to cough up all that mucus. Cilia do a lot for your body. Now people who have destroyed their cilia, have been smoking for many, many years. And once a cilia is killed, it is more than likley that it will not grow back. However, if they are damaged they can recover in time.

So yes, the best thing you can do now is to quit smoking, try to find something else to take your mind off of smokes, and nicatine.

good luck my firned.
Your lungs start to heal immediately after stopping smoking. Good for you. You have started a healthier lifestyle and everything will get better from here on out.
Go to the American Lung Association to find just how quickly things in your body start to heal after smoking.
Congrats!
Good God, dude, stop being so paranoid. You have to smoke heavily for years to get smoking related diseases. Your real problem will be quitting. Don-t put the cart ahead of the horse here. You haven-t tried stopping yet -- there-s a real good chance you-ll still be smoking when you-re 40.
Your health will better and some small lungs can heal, do more exercises and have a good diet, too.
not really.. if you already have a lung complication then even if you quit it dont do anything.. sorry... :(
NO they don-t heal , but I-m sure there-s no damage yet.

I want to give up the filthy things before I get the big -C-..I smoke well over a pack a day, and I-m also a diabetic with lung problems already. I know, bad..
Anyone here quit smoking and how did you do it? How long did you smoke? And how much? I-ve been smoking heavy for 16 years, I-m 32 now..I REALLY want to quit.
Any tips, or helpful advice would be greatly appreciated..thanks.
I smoked for 7 years and I throughout those last 4 years I struggled to quit and always failed. My failures were due to the fact that deep down inside I did not want to quit. Kicking the habit involves really wanting to quit. You have to really want this. Think about all the positive things you will gain from quitting such as your lungs recovering having a better sense of smell smelling better to others better taste buds better skin living longer being healthier in general and preventing lung disease cancer. Be mentally prepared and the best way honestly is cold turkey. Every time you feel like picking up a cigarette relate it to all these nasty things that you do not want or become. That-s how I quit. Good luck.

EDIT: My boyfriend wanted me to tell you that every time you crave for a cigarette tell yourself that it-s your lungs trying to heal itself. would you rather have a cigarette or live? and if you have kids would you want them to visit you in the hospital breathing out of a tube from your throat.
OK cold turkey does not work. Ill give you my program that actually does work if you have the patience.

Basically, you smoke less every week until you aren-t smoking at all.

Say you smoke a pack a day. In week 1, you can smoke a pack a day. In week 2, you can smoke 19 cigs a day, week3 18 and so on. When you get down to one a day, you can begin to go full days without smoking. Gradually you increase the amount of days you dont smoke until you are cig-free.

The most important thing about this program is to keep track of how much you smoke, and NEVER oversmoke. If you are finding it difficult, wait two weeks until you drop a cig but never go back up.

Even if this doesnt get you smoke free, it will reduce the amount you smoke.
I started when I was 16 too. I quit 4 years ago when I was 42 . I smoked 1 to 2 packs a day. When I quit, I got rid of all smoking materials. No cigarettes, no ashtrays, no lighters. I used little jawbreakers to ease the strain. They aren-t too fattening but they did distract me. The first week or two was probably the hardest but I just made a decision that I was NOT going to go buy anymore. I also have a little program on my computer that tracks how long I have stayed smoke free. It is a great motivator. Good Luck and have faith in yourself. You CAN do this!!
I started smoking when I was about 20 (curiosity made me start). I was doing 2 packs a day for nearly 2 months when suddenly -grace- reset some mental switches and the urge just left me. Yes, all of a sudden, no action on my part. I am still grateful for that (and yes, I started drinking too and again the switches in the brain/mind were reset by some invisible hand).

Blessings to you and may you succeed in your effort. Sai Ram.
I smoked weed for for along time but i quit, if ya talking about cancer sticks (ciggz) i could never even start smoking that stuff, it doesn-t taste good, it jus calms me down but not even by a lot ...

Best answer plz???
I did it cold turkey aftre getting a health scare with my heart BEST THING I EVER DID

good luck

It is probably wise for me to quit smoking before I want to diet and exercise huh? -

I am so out of shape but I know smoking is not helping me want to exercise because of the out of breath feeling. I hate that feeling, and know I have to lose weight. So smart idea to do that first. It will be hard. I am thinking of having my friend email me stuff asking me how my breathing is going. She-ll do it and be nasty about since she hates smoking. That-ll piss me off cuz I-ll think that she will believe I am failing.
All are good things to try to accomplish: stopping smoking, eating well and exercising more... but, if you try to make too many changes all at once, you may find yourself very frustrated and failing at all. Pick 2-3 small objectives/goals that you can work on for the next couple weeks. Things like, reducing the number of cigarettes, walking 10 minutes a day, eating more veggies... these are 3 small things that you can easily incorporate that will help you toward all your goals... and you will find that the more you increase healthy behaviour, the more you will want to reduce/quit the unhealthy ones.

You might also want to consider a support group. Having your friend help you is a great idea! Support groups (online, telephonic, in person) add to accountability--which it sounds like you are wanting.

Good luck to you!!
Smoking is bad, so no matter what you should quit. At first quitting may alter your weight, but keep with it! Good luck!
Yes, I would strongly suggest to quit smoking if you want to diet and exercise.

Your breathing does shorten and you will have less breath to do exercise if you don-t stop.

My sources have a good website for people who are looking to quit smoking, like you :)
yes it would be wise. smoking makes that stuff harder. it gets in your lungs and makes breathing dificult. and while exercising u dont want to pass out and collapse. my sister, when she was in school, she smoked alot and stil does, but in gym class she had a hard time because of the smoking.
quit for yourself not for anything or anybody else. and be sure to stay away of sugary snacks it increases nicotine cravings. it maybe hard to do it all at once but if you get weak just remember you can do it and that i beleive in you. i did it and you can too. go girl! i am your number one fan!
Always remember: You can-t quit too many things at once--OR you-ll go back to ALL of them.

For instance, if you drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and overeat--choose ONE of them to QUIT FIRST. After you-re confident you won-t go back to THAT one, QUIT the second... and so on.

Good luck to you.
If you want to work out, do it only 3 times per week. That was the secret. Anyone who tries to work out more than 3 times per week, is either a meat-head, body competition wanna-be or just gives up and doesn-t do it at all.

So, plan for 3 times a week.

As for smoking, it is about the most unhealthy thing you can do these days. You are basically killing yourself.

There are only about 8 different reasons why people smoke AFTER they have decided they wanted to quit. Try to really think about what is going through your head when you have urges to light up.

It is NOT just a physical addiction. That is the easy part. The mental addiction is the hard part, and you really have to understand who you are at that moment in time when you desire a smoke.
It is probably wise for you to quit smoking period, first, before doing anything else in life. We have all heard the dangers of smoking, however quitting is just do difficult. If you are serious about quitting i recommend you try this. It changed my life.

I need some help seriously! my husband lives in denial, how can i make him really quit smoking? this hurts me! -

I am a non smoker but his co-workers and best friends smoke big time, i guess that doesn-t help any, i have no idea what to do! i love him dearly, but if he doesn-t quit i guess i will have to leave him, i couldn-t stand watching as he self destructs.
Whatever happened to -for better or for worse?-

have him smoke outside, winter is coming and he-ll slack off.
Quiting is hard, and bugging him about it is only going to make him want to do it more.

eventually most smokers attempt quitting, It-s a very difficult thing to do. Especially if you are stressed out, and it-s hard to quit when you are always around others who do.
I-m not enabling his behaviour, but just sit him down and tell him how much you love him, and how much this hurts you. then drop it. He-ll come around.
Has he always smoked? Did he just start? If he was a smoker when you got married you can-t really be mad that he is smoking now. If you really want him to quit he is going to need your help and support. He can get the patch, or medications to help quit. Remember it takes the average smoker 8 attempts at quitting before they really do it.
No addict has ever quit any addiction because someone was telling them how bad their addiction is. It doesn-t work that way.

It seems you are emotionally attached to this, which is not healthy for you. I would suggest you research some type of -letting go-, for your own sanity.
This works...period. You have to get him to buy into this. It is a free site where people just simple help each other quit.

stopsmokingcenter.org

You go on it first. I quit on 1/12/07 and feel great, but wanted to quit...check it out for yourself...if he is really into it my e-mail is jimatusm@usmtg.com...I will help if he asks..
Find evidence against smoking and tell him. if he says he can-t stop, try chucking all the ciggaretts. It-ll help slightly. Make sure he stops smoking even with his friends. threaten him that you-ll divorce because you can-t put up with it. if he loves you, then he-ll stop. try it out. even use the guilt trick. But if you have kids, it-ll be a very very very bad problem

How can one quit smoking without so much irritation and emotional upset? -

I am quitting smoking again. I noticed I am irritable and emotional again. I don-t want those things to ruin my quit as it did last time. Does anyone have any experience, hope, or encouragement to share?
have a kid thats how my mom quit smoking
You can try electric cigarettes. These cigarettes are 100% safe, allow you to smoke in non-smoking areas and in public, and will provide you with the nicotine necessary to keep you from becoming emotionally unstable. They look and feel like a real cigarette, but without all the side effects or smell of a cigarette, and they are relatively inexpensive.
I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article: http://www.squidoo.com/Not_Smoking_Any_More
it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!

There have been opposite sorts of aids as good as a user can select that ever suits him best
You could get addicted to something else. Just something not so dangerous. Maybe get addicted to exercise. It will help...

Check out the book -The Easy Way to Stop Smoking-
It worked for me and other family members. The reviews on Amazon.com are all very good, too. All you have to do is read the book and you will be able to quit by the time you are finished.
Cold turkey plus. I went cold turkey with hypnosis. My ex hub quit smoking at the same time, so I had that reinforcement too. It-s been 15 years and I haven-t smoked a single cig since (I used to smoke 2 1/2 packs a day).

It gets easier after the first month or so. It really is hard--but sooo worth it. I don-t understand the theory that a different form of nicotine (gum, patch) helps you beat your nicotine addiction at all.
honestly, my dad did it with the help of God. it was an overnight kind of thing. he asked for help with it / it was his first prayer as an adult and the craving was gone overnight. he was a very heavy pal mal smoker / pack a day for years . he-s been wihout a cigarette for decades now , but says he has been tempted , especially , if he smells tobacco pipe . but he has never crossed line one time and stays in control.

many would not believe his story, but it is the honest truth. other people / members in family have prayed and prayed and dont seem to see the quick solutions. not sure why his prayers is answers, we are all just thankful that he was spared this .
New drug that is working well for a lot of longterm smokers. Chantix. Some people say it causes anger related problems, but anytime you try to quit smoking no matter what you use to quit you are going to have the anger issues. It is your body going thru withdrawls.
Stop buying cigarettes.
Nicorette gum (fruit chill flavor), The Idiot-s Guide to Quitting Smoking, and perseverance
I didn-t quit the day I bought the book or after chewing on one piece. I reminded myself constantly that this was the LAST time I was going to quit, and a one day set back wasn-t going to stop me. I had over a month of off and on before I finally made it a week. I still kept viewing it day by day, but I finally believed I could do it. I didn-t tell anyone until I hit a month. I continued chewing the gum for 6 months but less and less. I keep an emergency packet around, but I haven-t used it in months. Good luck.
Hypnosis... Many people go to hypnotists, and there is many succesfull results...
Try drinkin- bleech.
I tried the patch. lasted 10 days. You really do have to want to quit and not feel like you have to. I only lasted 10 days because I did not want to quit, just cut down. Good luck.
Best way is cold turkey, cheaper to.
i think thats probabaly the question of the century.
Perhaps a web search for -quit smoking- + -natural ways- might be useful.
Decide for your self that you really want to stop.. Really, really want to stop. And all else will be easy..

Quit smoking? -

I just quit smoking. It has been a week now, and I still feel very lightheaded, and like I am gonna pass out. Does anyone know if this is normal?
Sure it is.You will go threw lots of strange things as your body gets use to not having its daily nicotin fix.
well... that-s nice. you help save you body and the whole world. if you fell the urge of smoking chew some chewing gums perhaps. eat candies, do something to sweeten your taste.
I wouldn-t eat candies as suggested, because you are going to gain weight since you stopped smoking anyway...why increase the risk?

You have been going through withdrawl, so the symptom you describe is normal...what you really need to do is alter your routine. When you think about it, there were normal triggers that would cause you to smoke...while driving, you normally lit up at the same time every day. Go a different route.

You will need to do something with your hands to keep the urge away to light up...play with a rubber band, chew sugar free gum, chew on a straw. Do something to keep the mind from reacting to you not having a smoke. The hand and mind work together, so keep them engaged and you should see a decrease in your anxiety and cravings. You may also want to invest in some SAMe...don-t know what is in it that makes it work, but it sure does. You will be less anxious.

Stay away from other smokers, too. You feel less less desire to smoke again. BEST OF ALL, CONGRATULATIONS AND KEEP IT UP!!!!

Why do people get fat once they quit smoking? -

Why do people get fat once they quit smoking? -

is this true. and if so...why do they get fatter is it because of the lack of smokes or the food we are eatting and why is better to do
Because smoking supresses the appetite so when they stop they want to eat more.
The obvious way to burn fat is to consume less and move more, the problems surface when we really try to put that into practice! There are a lot of temptations in the real world don-t you think?! I uncovered some excellent help by learning from the web portal in the box below, they have a lot of guidance, I worked off 7 pounds by taking their advice.

Along with the constricted blood vessels, smoking fills your lungs with SMOKE instead of oxygen. Oxygen depletion in your blood, means oxygen depletion in your cells, all you cells, which means the cells that make up your body are full of poison. They can cleanse themselves and heal when you QUIT smoking, meaning your skin cells and all other cells will be healthier over time, and they will stay that way.
Yes.
less wrinkles...dry drinking lots of water if you want to cleanz your skin
use a moisturizing lotion after showers or baths
I think its because smoker-s veins are constricted, and once you quit, more blood can flow. Better blood flow will give skin a heathier, glowing look!

Please, tell me how I can quit smoking...? -

My goal for this year is to improve my health. I want to quit smoking and lose weight....in that order. Please gives me some tips that I can use to imrpove my health in these areas.
I found Wellbutrin very helpful, but it was cold turkey that worked the best so far (2 years). I also decided to always say -I am quiting- instead of -I have quit-. As in - it-s an ongoing process and not something that is done and in the past.

It-s really hard. It took several tries before I got this far. Now it-s a lot easier.

It was also easier when I quit hanging around other smokers. To quit, I had stop hanging around with people that smoked.
I used the Commit lozenges, and the patch. And when I had a craving I sucked on ice, that numbs your throat and your craving.
there is a new medication out now called Chantix It is a pill you take 1 everyday and continue to smoke but after alittle while of taking them your cravings will lesson each day until you no longer feel the cravings to smoke. That is what I plan to do my problem is the medication is very expensive but has a 97% sucsess rate. as far as loosing weight? take out the suagry things in your deit replace them with hearty nutrius snacks such as fruit yogurts and fresh fruits and fresh veggies and lowfat dips. you-ll lose it make sure to exersize everyday take the stairs and so forth and like that. Good luck I hope I helped you some DonnaC
Well, I just stopped buying them. But you may need the patch or nicotine gum to help with cravings. Keep busy, exercise -will help you lose weight and keep your mind off cigarettes.
get the patches and dont buy them no matter what your bodey tells you!and it has 200 poisens in it and it has tar in it and it forms aroung your liungs soo stop!
replace cigs with small low calories suckers since its an oral fixation....

Then to get healthier cut out soda...including diet and everyweek do one more thing liek that until most of ur bad habits are gone

Good luck
okay
say your smoking two packs aday
what you have to do is gradually go down to one pack
do this in the first week.
then once you only smoke one pack then switch to lights
and then after lowering that for a week goto ultra lights
and then youll be lowering it so its much easier to quit
cold turkey, or the patch
There are many aids for quitting smoking. Nicotine gums and patches are very successful at controlling cigarette cravings. Using the gums might also help with managing the lost oral habit, because you-ll be chewing something, and your mouth will be busy. I think I read somewhere that the gum, for this reason, has a slightly higher chance of preventing weight gain.

Also, talk with family and friends. These people can be a tremendous support when the irritability and withdrawal comes in. They can do their best to make sure not to add unnecessary stress to your life that might make you want to smoke more than you already will. Below is an article on what you can expect your recovery from tobacco addiction to be like, with tips:

http://whyquit.com/whyquit/A_Symptoms.ht…

As far as weight loss, I think it-s wise of you to put that after smoking cessation. You-re obviously well informed enough to know that weight gain may be a possibility, but that it-s worth it in the long run to stop smoking. Good for you!

I-m on day two and I-m quite the little b**** now. lol xD

Any suggestions on how to get rid of the crankiness?
Give it a day or two more.
To help ease the b*tchiness answer as many questions as you can.
OMG..LOL..don-t mean to laugh but the bit chine$$ never goes away. I stopped smoking 2 years ago and I-m still a witch spell-ed with a capital - B--.
Ok seriously, the crankiness and irrability you are feeling right now is normal and part of the quitting process.
Your brain is fighting the urge to smoke while your body is aching for that niccotine. It could last about 2 weeks at most.
YOU CAN DO IT ! Keep the fight! Don-t be uptight!
(ok, getting carried away here..sorry)
Have you tried gum? I-ve heard after about a week it-ll stop making you so bitchy..
Take your mind off of it or cling onto a new habbit. Good luck and I hope you stick to it no matter what. Cheers.
once u get passed the third day the bitchiness will start to go away.. just keep urself busy

heres my question will the doctor still prescibe them even though the insurance company that won-t pay for them is paying for the doctors visit. i plan on paying for the prescibtion myself. it-s medicaid by the way
I can-t answer that question but i can tell you of two people I know who smoked for more than 20 years quit when they were Hypnotized..It was only 60 dollars a visit and it only took one visit for both people..
Try smart fixx.
I think they will still prescribe.. also, the drug Chantix is great. My hubby and I both quit using that. Miracle drug as far as I can tell!!!!
I quit one week ago today. Pack a day for 18 years. No gum or patches or anything. It was hard the first 3 days. Now it-s super easy. I-ll never smoke again.
Here-s how I quit smoking:

I bought an Xbox video console, and NASCAR racing game. Every time I wanted a smoke, I fired up the racing game and used pretzel rods to chomp on. I was off the smokes in about two weeks, and have NEVER had a smoke since.
See if they-ll pay for Chantix.

Expected weight gain when you quit smoking? -

How much can you expect to gain when you quit? I stopped 12 days ago, ok. I have had 3 in that time but it-s still progress. I am using the patch. I have gained 10 pounds already. I monitor my weight constantly for other reasons but it is 10 pounds.
I gained 20 pounds in 1 yr. Start exercising now 2 avoid it b/c u-ll wanna eat more. Chew some sugar free gum. Learn 2 manage stress the right way.
I quit four days ago after smoking for years!! I-ve gone back on my gestational diabetes diet and I-ve lost 5 pounds. Basically you wake up and eat a piece of toast with peanut butter.
10:00 AM Snack Cheese and Crackers or 1/2 peanut butter sandwich
Lunch--A Healthy Choice ( or similar) frozen dinner that has less than 25 carbs
3:00 Snack--Cheese and Crackers, 1/2 bagel with cream cheese, peanuts, pecans or 1/2 Peanut butter sandwich
Supper--If you have a casserole, only eat one cup. Low carb veggies (green beans, etc)
9:00 PM 1/2 bagel with cream cheese or 1/2 peanut butter sandwich

My diabetes nurse said that the peanut butter keeps your metabolism revving CONSTANTLY. I lost 65 pounds PREGNANT!!!! And I felt like I was EATING ALL DAY LONG!!!

At the 9:00 PM snack time, DON-T EAT BEFORE OR AFTER THAT TIME. Try to stay with 9:00 on the dot! It will help you sleep.

TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM MILK. --
first drop the patch
second drink water around 2 liters
third exercise to replace the craving
eat more fruit more healthy food
start playing video games or something anything that
try meditating
also eat more but healthier like spread it out threw the entire day
You need to exercise- the nicotine in cigarretes is an appetite supressant and a stimulant so ur body needs to adjust . once you are throught with withdrawls in a couple weeks your weight should return to normal as long as you eat healthy and exercise

Im trying to quit smoking. Im down to two cigarettes a day. What can I do between halves to pass the time? -

I-m cutting back on my smoking. I-m now smoking a half every 4 hours starting at 9am and going till 9pm. what can I do to pass the time between halves?
to lose weight u need to eat right and have a workout plan 5-6 days a week.u have to want it.
***try this u need to change ur diet.
eat six times a day. ea of ur 3 main meals needs to combine a lean protein such as chicken breast ground turkey turkey bacon egg whts also combine that with a complex carb such as a baked potato or sweet potato wild rice brown rice oatmeal or girts. also add fresh fruit and vegies to lunch and dinner. pick fruits low in sugar like pears and berries. if u get canned vegies get ones with low sodium. eat every 3-4 hrs keep ur metablism moving.
***also the most important part is WATER drink at least 64oz. no soda or juice. water will curve ur cravings.
u need to hit cardio 3-4 times a week running outside it great workout if u can hit a gym and cardio machine is great at least 30mins***
also add weight/strength training 3 times a week.u can google free weight traning guides anywhere. its not hard to find things for free. also for those wanting sexy hot abs. a nice toned stomach comes from a body with low body fat. so if ur overweight and u do a million crunches or any ab workout you r wasting your time!!! cant see the muscles under fat. low body fat equals=a nice flat toned stomach.
***plan ur meals ahead of time.always have a healthy snack with u so u wont be tempted to eat fast food. also if u wait to late to eat u will get so hungry u will eat the world. make time to work out start out with 30 mins then increase.its ur body treat it right. ur diet alone can help lose weight but working out makes ur body look good. shows muscles and tight skin which is sexy and beautful. stick with it ur body will amaze u!!! to be healthy and look great u need both in ur life. good luck email me if u have further questions
I am in the process of quitting smoking right now as well. I am going cold turkey though (an incredibly miserable process). I find myself becoming jittery and anxious. I have to keep myself busy in order to control my temper, that seems to be flaring today (this is day two for me). I have been doing my spring cleaning. It was suggested that I crochet, read, etc. but anything that requires me to sit still only makes the tension and severe cravings worse. Even if your house is already clean, organize your drawers, clean out some extra stuff that-s been accumulating in the closet, etc. If the weather is nice where ever you are from do some yard work. I don-t suggest going anywhere there are people though bc you are bound to see someone else smoking and I can guarantee that seeing other people smoke will make you give in to your cravings not to mention the fact that your irritability is increasing due to the lack of nicotine.

Hope that helps, all this talking about cigarettes is making me crave even worse. LOL Good Luck! I won-t give in if you don-t!
My Aunt used sunflower seeds. It keeps your mouth busy with the cracking of the shells and getting the seeds out.

Also there is chewing on pens. You also have something that your hands can play with, and it is a similar motion for your mouth and hands to smoking.

Hard candies and gum as well.

Has anyone heard that constipation is a side effect after you quit smoking? -

Has anyone heard that constipation is a side effect after you quit smoking? -

Yes it can be.

There are a whole list of -side effects- to giving up smoking.
No, the usual side effect is diarrhea. Nicotine is a nerve poison, and when you take it out of the body, sometimes the nerves overreact and you get diarrhea. But any big change in your habits can cause problems. Just make sure you are drinking enough liquids, and if you need to, start taking one of those fiber laxatives for help.
of course it can be a side effect. Nicotine is a stimulant, and without it in your system any longer it will take a while for your bowels to become accustomed to doing with out it. The best way to avoid constipation during smoking cessation is to take a stool softener and drink at least two liters of water a day.
No. It didn-t happen to me.
Yes, this is common.

The main reason that you get constipated is because your body is going through withdrawals and it causes your system to shut down for a few days.

How can i quit smoking dope without worrying about other stuff? -

How can i quit smoking dope without worrying about other stuff? -

i haven-t smoked dope in like alomost a month but I want to get high again and my friends still all do it and ask if I want it and I-ll say no except if I am having a hystarical day. for instance walikng in on my ex with my best friend
it-s all a matter of exercising your freedom to choose. i don-t believe the folks who say that the likes of us who like to get high are getting nowhere because it-s only highly hypocritical and quite superficially their answer to why they don-t do it themselves!first, though, if you really want to quit, you have to also minimize the time you spend hanging out with those who still smoke dope. it makes you feel bad and left-out when they smoke, but it makes you feel worse if you break this sort of compromise you-ve made with yourself because you know you-re quitting. just try it for like, two weeks minimum! surely you won-t miss it if you indulge yourself in other things. find a new hobby, for example.
just tryin to help, but hey if you want to smoke this afternoon, i-m free at two pm. haha! do take care
Never do drugs they will ruin your life. Thas all i have to say.
Narcotics anonymous could help you, but you most likely wont need it. During the process you go through in order to eliminate substance or drug abuse from your life, you might need to make some drastic changes in your immiediate atmosphere. This means that you may need to stop hanging around these friends of yours that use drugs. Or you could simply leave to go do something else when they are doing drugs.
To find motivation in eliminating drug abuse, you might need some DIRECTION. You can find direction from a number of people. Maybe the reason why you turn to drugs in the first place is because you dont get the proper direction and guidance from your parents, or from an older role model. Without direction, that is, without a destination, a reason to quit doing what your doing; you will only continue on the same path even if you make small increments of progress, such as quitting marijuana for a month.
I recommend finding an alternative hobby, and also concentrating on the development of your life. You have all the opportunity in the world to become whatever you want, living in America, and you need to take advantage of this blessing. Working out is an excellent hobby, and you could try to find a local kickboxing gym or a good martial arts dojo to join. Make sure that you find a good teacher, someone that can give you excellent advice.
Dope is a crutch that will take over your life. Unless you want to end up as a homeless bum, you have to be strong and keep saying no. Find different friends. The ones you have are dragging you down.
Life is full of problems but drugs will not make them go away. They will just become another problem, the worst problem of all.
Be strong, youre better than stupid drugs! Difficult sh!t may come your way but dont resort to drugs they will take over your life and make it hell. If it gets worse try consulting one of those drug helplines. i know they are lame but they might help save your life.
Notyou311 is taking things in exaggeration. But it is something you don-t want to do often, if not at all. I did it once. It wasnt that great for me. I-m not gonna do it again. Not because its against the law. Just cuz I don-t need to. Find other things that make you happy that don-t cost you money. I-m not trying to sound like a DARE advocate, in fact marijuana should be legal. I-m not even a stoner!
Try going to N.A. (Narcotics Anonyomous)
Smoking dope may seem like an easy escape from your troubles, but really you-re just getting sucked into addiction... An addiction that can potenitally harm you. =( Try your best to quit, and to help quit worrying about other things, try spending some more time devoted to yourself, and try to avoid situations that will make you worry. Also, it seems like you don-t really have the best of friends... a good friend wouldn-t try to force you to smoke, or offer harmful drugs to a friend they really care about.

What is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

LLLT is the application of a -cold- pure laser light to treat certain conditions. It has been used to successfully treat many kinds of musculoskeletal injuries because it promotes healing and tissue repair. LLLT has also been found to be an extremely successful treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, weight control, and smoking cessation.

Is LLLT safe?

LLLT is a safe, painless, and medication-free treatment. It has been used in England, Canada, and Europe for over 20 years with no documented adverse side effects. Laser therapy is a non-medical procedure and is respected by many physicians as a highly effective treatment.

How does LLLT work?

The laser light reached through the skin to stimulate your nerve endings to produce endorphins. Endorphins are produced normally by you and are nature-s own mood lifter and anesthetic. The endorphin production relives the physical withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking and helps keep you from feeling anxious or -crabby-.

good luck
I Hope this is enough information for you, and at least it is a start..
good luck
and I know you CAN do it..
I-ve never heard of laser therapy. However Hypnotherapy is meant to be effective. It takes around 3 sessions, and costs around AU$80 per session, which is worth it if you add up the amount you spend on cigarettes. I-m going to give it a shot, I really want to quit smoking aswell. Best of Luck.
I got laser treatment and it made me want to smoke more! Also, I love Jar Jar Binks!
Uhhh... your friend lies. That-s not possible.

Hypnosis, maybe, but unless they-re having their lips lasered shut, I don-t see how you could possibly do that.
rehab is for quitters
Here is what the American Cancer Society has to say about Cold Laser Therapy and smoking:

-Cold laser therapy providers advertise this method as a way to help people quit smoking, and some TV stations have reported this as news. The treatment is supposed to relax the smoker and release endorphins (naturally-occurring pain relief substances) in the body to simulate the effects of nicotine in the brain, or balance the body’s energy to relieve the addiction. Despite claims of success by some cold laser therapy providers, there is no scientific evidence that shows this is an effective method of helping people stop smoking. -

Why do people get fat once they quit smoking? -

Why do people get fat once they quit smoking? -

is this true. and if so...why do they get fatter is it because of the lack of smokes or the food we are eatting and why is better to do
Nicotene speeds up the metabolism and also acts as a comfort mechanism replacing the desire for food with the desire to smoke, so when you stop smoking, you tend to eat more and also burn less calories in a sedentary state. But if you try to exercise a little every day and eat as before, then that together with kicking the habit will make you really fit and healthy and totally worth it.
If you really want to quit smoking, take a look to a new perspective at:

http://stopsmoking.eu.pn/

It-s designed for everyone who seriously wants to stop smoking without the use of any drug nor patches, taking into account nutrition facts, and It-s free.

This site tackles smoking from an addiction perspective; It doesn’t matter if you are a five a day teenager, or a one hundred a day pensioner, male or female, or if this is your first or fiftieth attempt at stopping, if you follow all instructions, certainly you-ll become a non-smoker and without gaining any weight.
Smoking increases the metabolism and suppresses appetite. When you go through nicotine wtihdrawal, the opposite happens.

If I quit smoking today, how long would it take to feel human again? -

At 2 weeks I already felt much better and cravings were much less intense. At 1 month I think I actually felt human again. Good Luck!
Look, if your addicted then you will never feel completely normal, You will always have a subtle craving for a smoke. But don-t be discouraged, the first 2 weeks are the absolute worst, if you can get past that you are on the right track.
What were you smoking that made you feel inhuman? And where can I get some?!
Within 12 hours after you have your last cigarette, your body will begin to heal itself. The levels of carbon monoxide and nicotine in your system will decline rapidly, and your heart and lungs will begin to repair the damage caused by cigarette smoke.

Within a few days you will probably begin to notice some remarkable changes in your body. Your sense of smell and taste may improve. You will breathe easier, and your smoker-s hack will begin to disappear, although you may notice that you will continue to cough for a while. And you will be free from the mess, smell, inconvenience, expense, and dependence of cigarette smoking.

As your body begins to repair itself, instead of feeling better right away, you may feel worse for a while. It-s important to understand that healing is a process-shyp;it begins immediately, but it continues over time. These -withdrawal pangs- are really symptoms of the recovery process.

Immediately after quitting, many ex-smokers experience -symptoms of recovery- such as temporary weight gain caused by fluid retention, irregularity, and dry, sore gums or tongue. You may feel edgy, hungry, more tired, and more short-tempered than usual and have trouble sleeping and notice that you are coughing a lot. These symptoms are the result of your body clearing itself of nicotine, a powerful addictive chemical. Most nicotine is gone from the body in 2-3 days.
couple of months, then you can smell the nasty smoke on other people... yuck!
From my own experience three days of feeling bad and mad at everyone---Then you should began to feel better--- find something to do after eating or drinking---change your habits do a lot of walking.
depends. how long you have been smoking? and how frequently?
No one mentions the severe withdrawals and cravings. Do yourself a favor honey, get yourself a nicotine patch, it helps a great deal.
At 20 minutes after quitting:
blood pressure decreases
pulse rate drops
body temperature of hands and feet increases.

At 8 hours:
carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal
oxygen level in blood increases to normal

At 24 hours:
chance of a heart attack decreases

At 48 hours:
nerve endings start regrowing
ability to smell and taste improve

Between 2 weeks and 3 months:
circulation improves
walking becomes easier
lung function increases

Between 1- 9 months there are significant improvements in:
coughing
sinus congestion
fatigue
shortness of breath

At 1 Year smoke free:
excess risk of coronary heart disease is decreased to half that of a smoker

At 5 years smoke free:
from 5 to 15 years after quitting tobacco, stroke risk is reduced to that of people who have never smoked.

At 10 years smoke free:
risk of lung cancer drops to as little as one-half that of continuing smokers
risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases
risk of ulcer decreases

At 15 years smoke free:
risk of coronary heart disease is now similar to that of people who have never smoked
risk of death returns to nearly the level of people who have never smoked

Need to quit smoking, and ALL my friends smoke. Help? -

I never feel the urge to smoke unless I am around my friends because they constantly are smoking. I-ll wake up every morning after smoking and feel so ashamed, then by the time work is over and I wanna relax with my friends, I find some way to convince myself that it-s okay to have a few smokes. It-s NOT okay. I need to stop.
Any help? I can-t afford any quitting aids or things like that
Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

if they are round at yours, tell them they have to smoke outside. Tell them you are trying to quit and it may even encourage them too. It will also help them to respect you and not smoke around you. Since you cant smoke in bars, dont go outside when they go for a smoke then you wont be tempted!

You say you cant afford quitting aids, yet you can afford fags, doesnt make sense!!! You will save a lot by quitting, and you wont smell like an ashtray anymore yay :D
Sometimes, things around us can affect in either in a good or bad way. I would replace smoking for something more healthy like gum, sunflower seeds, or herbs; when you need or feel like smoking , just take out a piece of gum or anything else but a cigarette. Smoking is doing you damage every time and things can get really ugly, I don-t want to scare you but you could die in a short period of time. Well, I hope you can make the right decision. Good luck!
no it is not ok, and it will just get worse, buy a lot of gum, or if you have to smoke, buy herbals, they don-t have any nicotine in them, and some are actually healthy, smoking a herb -colts foot- which is the main ingredient in herbals, is actually beneficial

we all started like this, and most of us never quit smoking, I managed to quit after over 10 years and God knows how much damage to my body
lol i know how it is. seems like all my friends smoke i usually carry our some toothpicks or matches for i can chew on if i get a urge to smoke. also drinking water or eating candy helps too
Actually, It-s fine to have a few, they key word being -few.- Stop trying to be Miss Perfect and enjoy your life.
Destroy them.

How can a person help get someone to quit smoking and how can i understand thought he might yell at another? -

How can a person help get someone to quit smoking and how can i understand thought he might yell at another? -

Kathy,

Nobody can make anybody do anything, especially when it comes to an addiction. Only the individual can make the decision for himself.

With regards to the rest of your question, I-m not really sure what you are asking. What do you want to understand, and who might he yell at?
Don-t try to make someone quit smoking. It will just annoy the crap out of them. A friend of mine said he would quit when people stop trying to make him quit.

Does The Patch Really Work If You Want To Quit Smoking for Good? -

Does The Patch Really Work If You Want To Quit Smoking for Good? -

The patch is great. It takes all the stress out while you learn how not to hold a cigarette . Nicotine gum is great. BOTH require willpower. You will find that the psychology of smoking is the worst thing to break. Be determined.
The patch is designed to pump nicotine into your system to help ease nicotine withdrawal.

I have taught hundreds of people how to quit smoking, and I have found that the patch doesn-t work for most people.

The reason?

They rely too heavily on the patch. When the can-t quit

they say: the patch didn-t work for me.

The method that I have found that works the best is to taper down on how much you smoke. Smoke only when you absolutely need one. Within a week you should be down to 3 or 4 cigarettes a day.

At that point, you are only fighting the urge to smoke 3 or 4 times a day (rather than 20 or 40 if you smoke a pack or two a day) and when you do quit, the nicotine withdrawal isn-t as severe because you have already cut down.

Some people are able to look at the patch as a short-term crutch to help them quit -- that-s all it is--and for them the patch can work.

i am trying to quit smoking and i can not find a way that works for me i have tried the patch, inhaler, and just putting them down nothing seems to work. any suggestions?
Try the gum?

I used to smoke, but I quit because my parents caught on..
anyway, here-s why I never went back:
I work at a grocery store, and the people that buy cigarettes seriously smell disgusting. I never thought I smelled bad, or any of my friends, but long time smokers smell awful.

I mean I don-t know if you care about that, but seriously, just step back and think of how gross cigarettes are to you.

I suggest Cold TUrkey. Reward yourself somehow for every day you didn-t smoke one.
OR my friend decided she-d quit smoking after her current lighter ran out of fluid. Seemed like kind of a good time to start quitting.

I hope I was helpful!

What can you do to help a person who is trying to quit smoking cold turkey? -

What can you do to help a person who is trying to quit smoking cold turkey? -

If you-re a Christian, I-d highly suggest prayer. It-s the only thing that-s helped a couple of friends of mine. Otherwise, I don-t know what to suggest.
Buy him lots and lots of chewing gum.

I quit cold turkey a few years ago and it was tough. The main thing was the feeling of not having something in your hand or mouth in stressful situations that ordinarily would call for a smoke.

So in times like that I-d pop a chicklet or anything handy. Not exactly the same, but the craving would pass eventually.

And for you, his wife, by all mean DO NOT GUILT HIM if he should stumble once or twice. Be supportive. Tell him your pulling for him. But don-t nag, guilt, or anything that really isn-t gonna help him out.
They may not appreciate the advice because they want to -go it alone, but a few suggestions that will help are:
1. When the urge hits, take the deepest breath possible, then slowly exhale. Then a few more semi-deep breaths with slow exhalations. Simulates smoking and sorta tricks the body while it reduces the urge.
2. Drink heap of water, particularly in the first few days, to flush the system. Reduces cravings quicker.
3. Keep some healthy nibblies on hand - bits of carrot, celery, apple pieces, nuts, etc. Craving a smoke is very akin to a hunger and this also is a bit of a body trick.
hit him in the head and send him into a comma for a year then maybe by the time he wakes up all the niccotine will be out of his system! or
get yourself a pair of ear plugs so you don-t have to hear him complaining about every little thing! I would go for the comma though, be much less stressful on you! LOL
I would suggest the patch. I think it helps to avoid the withdrawl symptoms and with cravings.
you can tell him that smoking effects his vascular system so much that his future orgasms won-t be as strong and surging.
you can pray for him. God doesn-t want him to smoke and hurt his body either.
you can tell him that you want him to be here with you forever, why do you want to die sooner.
I quit in 1988 cold turkey. I kept a ash tray full of ashes and every time I wanted to smoke I would put water in the ash tray. Take my finger and play in it and smell my finger (it stinks bad) when the urge to smoke was over I would smell the ash tray one more time and wash my hands. Good luck
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quit smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK
I have been through this with a man. I guess the first thing is to accept that he may be irritable and sensitive while he-s breaking this addiction. To the best of your ability, make the household run very smoothly during this time. Keep plenty of tasty food and drink on hand - he-ll want something to do with his mouth. Jerky, chips, nuts, things that require lots of chewing and have a satisfying strong taste may give him substitute satisfaction. If he likes chocolate, keep some around; it-s a mood elevator and mild stimulant. Control the noise level in the household as far as you are able; people in the throes of quitting nicotine seem very sensitive to sounds. Any discussions or situations that create tension should be postponed until he-s over the most painful phase of quitting.
Send him to an acupuncturist. They can work WONDERS!
Get him hooked on something else..maybe like soda or something, LOL...I really don-t know :/
Don-t nag him, get out of his way.

When I quit smoking more than 4 years ago - I slept a lot, like being in a daze, but it wore off after a while.

Has Anyone Went To A Hypnotist To Lose Weight or Quit Smoking? Do You Believe? -

Please- Could you tell me what it was for, do they work or just a money grabber.
How did it work for you ... In what way?

Thank you very much.
Some people who tried this method failed and the hypnotist had to give up and told them that they were resistant subjects. You cannot be hypnotised against your will. You have to be cooperative and wishing and willing.
Personally, no, but I do know a few people who have tried it for weight loss and quitting smoking - with absolutely no luck. It-s mind over matter. Save your money.
not everyone can be hypnotized. People who have difficulty trusting are not able to.
It didn-t work for me.
hypnotism works very well for some people, not at all for others, it depends entirely on how suggestable you are. But be aware, if you try that route, it takes many visits, just one will not work, and it can get pretty expensive.

OK Please noone yell at me,I had doublebypass 3 years ago and diabetes type 2 since last sept.I started smoking again last year,we live on a farm in the middle of nowhere, cannot drive at night, night vision shot because of meds, have no friends here, cannot sub candy etc.I think it is a crutch for me because of lonliness etc.any suggestions?
well i dont have any experience with smoking ingeneral, but i-d say just stop. throw out all your cigarettes. you-re gonna get really pissed off and want to smoke again, but it-ll be worth it. or you could try the patch or gum. i-m only fifteen, so i dont really know how to help, but my dad smokes, and i know i-d give anything for him to stop.
cold turkey like me pal !!! i had a triple bypass 2 years ago this thanksgiving ! im justt turning 35 , point is if you want to live stop the damn smokes and get a tread mill , yes it sucks real bad for 6 months but damn it it is an addiction just dont light up dotn buy them even when you want to , i know you crave em i do to sometimes but man i want to live i hope you do to
My suggestion is to gradually quit. Try putting out like 15 cigarettes for a week. Tell yourself that this is the only amount of cigarettes you have to last you for the day. Then the next week, only put out 14. Eventually, you-ll get it. If you quit cold turkey, you will fien them more, and I know how bad that can be. I know a lot of people successfully quit this way, but I suggest weining yourself away from them. Good luck, I-ll say a prayer.
just cold turkey... you can do it!!
My brother started taking Welbutrin, and it worked for him

It is an anti depressant, so you-ll prolly feel better and not smoke
what you should try is smoking mre per day, eventually you will get tired of them you wont want any more
ask you doctor to prescribe something to HELP you quit. I have tried zyban and it made me really angry all the time. The doctor might also prescribe an antidepressant to help with coping while trying to quit. Snack on raw fruits and veggies throughout the day to satisfy the urge to put something in your mouth. (and for all you perverts out there I wasnt meaning what you are thinking) This should also help in losing a few pounds as well. Lots of fresh air and sunshine is always a plus. You need to take up a hobby that uses your hands. I have been crocheting alot and that helps me. The longer I keep my hands busy the less I can smoke, right? When you get that first urge to light up go to the kitchen and get a tall glass of ice cold water. DO NOT keep your cigarettes in eyes view, out of sight / out of mind. (Sometimes) If you do smoke a cigarette, break it in half to where you are only smoking some of it. Set a goal for yourself, ei; today pull out only 10 cigarettes for the whole day, space them out evenly giving you atleast 1 hour in between each. Next Monday, pull out only 9 for the day, and so on. eventually your cravings will slow down if not come to a hault all together. If you are sitting there right now reading this with a cigarette in you hand then put it out now and get something to drink, go wash your hands to get rid of the smoke smell, and hide your cigarettes. It-s getting late anyhow so you dont REALLY need to smoke again before you go to bed. OH, also make a rule to only smoke outside and never in the house. Be sure your friends and family know of this new rule as well, you dont need any temptation. When the weather gets cooler you really wont want to be standing outside in your skivies just to smoke. I hope you are really taking the time to read this. NOW, GO PUT OUT THAT CIGARETTE!!
You can only quit if YOU WANT TO.

I have found that Zyban, or Wellbutrin actually make the cravings stop. You have to be strong if you want to be a quitter.
Go to this smoker-s lung photo collection:

http://www.medicinenet.com/smokers_lung_…

I quit cold turkey a very long time ago.

Not because of health, because I had 2 young children that told
me how I smelled~~~~then I saw a picture of a healthy lung and
a smokers lung (pink vs black) that was enough for me.

You did it before~~there are no excuses, or substitutes~~
just good health and clean fresh air and a longer life!

Be positive ~ you can do it again!
well my doctor put me on wellbutrin and i barely smoked at all and my medicine was to cure depression and it cured my smoking habit that i only did at nite cuz of my boredom and loneliness also and now im happy lol ..u should try it cuz it really takes away the urge and ive been on it for only 2 wks...and it makes me nauseous if i try and believe me i try and it smells nasty and tastes nasty also..

How long did it take for you to feel better once you quit smoking? ? -

2 -3 months went by before I felt better, mentally and physically.
I quit October, 2001.

It goes in threes.

First three hours.
First three days
First three months
First three years.

My lungs started to really clear out after nine months (the younger the sooner).

Sometimes I still want a cigarette but I prefer breathing (and sleeping through the night without waking up coughing) over smoking.

The chance of you getting emphysema are more likely than cancer from smoking. The feeling is that of drowning in your own lung fluids. Doesn-t hold a candle to -water boarding-.

T
Immediately after making the decision to quit, you automatically feel better! because you have taken control of your own life. It is good to be in control, and not be controlled by anything.
We humans were put here with the freedom of choice. and when that-s a problem we seem to behave inhumanly!
Maybe choosing to smoke is one of the reasons we neglect the underlying issues of our basic human rights. Respect, Dignity and Freedom......Equal Rights and Justice brings Peace and Harmony.
Do you think that you would still want a cigarette if these ideals were true?
I felt better the first day and better every day after that. But, i gave them up becausei could not afford $8 per pack. After a year i now am back to 3 cigs a day...

A long term smoker will suffer what effects when they quit smoking? -

I asked this earlier but didn-t get a response to what I was wondering. What I really want to know is if I quit smoking (I-ve been at it for 20 years now) am I going to have temporary respritory problems while my sillia begin to repair themselves.
Nope u won-t have any respiratory problems after cessation of smoking ... the only documented sideeffect was gain in weight .
No I-m a nurse. You will breathe clearer and will be OK.
Probably not, chances are it will feel awkward for a while because you wont be breathing in smoke anymore, but I dont think you will have problems, I know ex-smokers can be irritable temporarily though, you might wanna watch out for that.
I had one chest infection after another for about six months and believe it or not my teeth started to fall out. I put on four stone, apart from that isn-t life grand?
I just had cravings, and I found I did not want to eat as much, then I got a bit irritable for a while, but having been smoke free for a year I feel much better and my skin looks better as well

What is a good method for easing into an exercise plan and quitting smoking? -

I have smoked regularly for 2 years and am ready to quit. I don-t want to gain weight after I quit. It-s not as if i-ve been totally lazy, but I would like to gradually build up my endurance again. Any tips?
it took me about 2-3 tries, but I quit smoking and started running. i previously ran cross country in high school, but got adrift in college smoking/partying. i accomplished this change by:

1. Being consistent. Making sure I walk/ran a set distance every day at the same time. It was a park across the street (did one 2 mile loop) every day at the same time.

2. Improving my speed through interval/burst running. I started off walking mostly, but did small bursts of running to pressure my lungs/cardiovascular system. Eventually my intervals got longer until I was able to run the whole circuit. It took me nearly a month or a month and a half after about 2-3 years of smoking a pack a day.

You may have been smoking longer, I don-t know. But I realized I was on the wrong track and it was pretty hard to quit and get healthy, but I did it.

I would suggest you look up terms like Endurance/Running on the web. There are a lot of simple schedules/routines to follow. The best thing to do is make sure you are really stressing your lungs/body (don-t over do it). You have to get your heart going.
Start walking up to 30 minutes a day. You will need to cut down on calories because the average quitter gains 10-20 pounds in 6 months.
