I quit smoking, started gaining weight...any tips? -

I quit smoking almost 2 weeks ago. I have done great with very little side effects, except I am always eating. I have gained about 3lbs since I quit, so somone suggested I chew on straws. I have done this all day and it seems to work, but it can-t be great for my teeth. Anyone have any other suggestions? I try not to eat candy because I really watch my sugar and caffine intake. Hope someone can help!
keep healthy snacks like carrot sticks around and get some exercise when ever you can.
the first month is the hardest.
you can do it!!
congratulations on doing something to help your health.
try chewing sugar less gum and anytime you wanna eat run around the block to get your mind off food
I have never smoked but I would say that you should try to never smoke again because it kills you. Eating healthy food helps to keep you thin and healthy if you are gaining weight. I would also excercise or try chewing gum.

My mom has COPD but she quit smoking 7 years ago. Why is it still getting worse?!? -

My mom has COPD but she quit smoking 7 years ago. Why is it still getting worse?!? -

My mom has had COPD for many years but ignored it till she got heart trouble 8 years ago. Now her heart is doing better with treatment, but she is shorter and shorter of breath. If she stopped smoking (for 7 years), why are her lungs getting worse?
Stopping smoking can decrease the rate of progression of COPD but cannot halt or reverse it as COPD is a progressive disease. It-s like a chain reaction that can-t be stopped. Although giving up smoking at any stage in the process means an increase in lifespan.
Because the damage caused by the smoking is already done. As she ages, her lungs and general health will continue to get worse, highly due to the smoking in her past.

A family friend developed lung cancer 20 years after he had quit smoking; why? Simply because the damage was already done.
Had surgery for unrelated problem, was told had emphysema. Dr said early stage if quit smoking reversible to point. If not will be on oxygen in 5 yrs dead in 10. Guess it depends on the stage.Im 47
COPD doesn-t get better over time. It usually gets worse. She has already done too much damage in the past. Most people that have COPD will eventually require supplemental oxygen.
just because she stoped smoking doesnt mean that she is going to be cured because the damage is already done
she has damaged her lungs beyond repair. have her follow up with her pulmonologist.

I want to quit smoking so bad. But I cant seem to kick the habit.? -

I have idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Can be seen at www.pumonaryfibrosis.org and still smoke. I must be nuts. Can anybody tell me how to quit smoking in a way that really works. I have tried the patches, but they don-t work for me. This lung disease I have is fatal and can only get better with a lung transplant.
start with the patch, in order to assist you psychologically...do not throw your cigs away. Keep your current pack with you, but do not smoke. The patch will soothe your physical addiction, and the comfort of knowing you have cigs with you will alleviate any panic or anxiety.
Good luck and remember you can only succeed if you truly want too.
Ever heard of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)? The way it works is like this.. a person focuses on the physical, emotional or mental problem that needs to be worked on, then the person taps with their fingers on certain acupuncture meridian points a few times, which then unblocks the flow of energy through the body. Once the blockage is removed normal functioning of the the body can resume. It usually works almost instantly and it generally produces permanent results. Sounds too simple to be true? The truth is ALWAYS far simpler than we think it is. Buy the set of DVD-s from the following website. It-ll be the best $60 you ever spent in your life. If you-re as desperate as you sound (no offense intended), it-s worth a shot isn-t it? How much money have you already spent on worthless patches?

patches
Help me to , i am so weak cant give up
I smoked for 3 years and then I could not stand it anymore and I finally quit because it was the taste and the smell that got to me. I got sick when I was smoking and took a drink of water and that was enough to quit. The taste of the water mixed with the cigarette was gross. That was years ago and I-d say that you have the power in your mind to do anything. It will be hard and you will want to go crazy but after a while you will win. It-s either that or die.
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quite smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK!
don-t quit cold turkey. just slowly eliminate the number of times you smoke. for example you smoke after every meal and you eat 3 times a day. stop smoking after lunch. after you get comfortable with that, stop smoking after dinner, and then after breakfast. and TA-DA you quit smoking!
don-t expect it to just happen, it will be frustrating and hard, but you must be strong. there are many programs out there to help you be strong and quit.
good luck!
i smoked 30-40 aday until doctor told me i had chronic lung disease. i was going on holiday the next day to Italy so i didn-t take any cigarettes with me! I spent the entire holiday having so much fun that I didn-t give smoking a thought. when i came home i had been smoke free for 2 whole weeks and it was easier to cope with. it worked for me so why not give it a try. good excuse for getting away for a while. keep busy is the secret. Take one day at a time. only think about not smoking today and see what happens tomorrow when it comes. Good luck.
Quitting smoking is extremely difficult. The withdrawl makes us not want to, but we know the risks and we know that they are not worth it. For anyone who wants to end their nicotine addiction, check out www.stopsmokingcleveland.com. This is the MOST effective method on the market. It is 86% effective and the details of the program are on the website (no signing up or submitting your information).

I tried this program and it changed my life.
Believe it or not, I used hypnotherapy. I haven-t smoked in 5 years.
me either I feel your pain
i cant stop.you CANT STOP so stop trying.
dont buy cigarrettes.
I quit 2 months ago. It took me several tries and I am still getting nic fits. I have tried patches and the gum before, but this time it was cold turkey. The fits were so bad I had to take sleeping pills at night to get some sleep. Will power and self discipline is what it-s going to take. Constantly remind yourself why you are quitting.
Even try light meditation, visualize how much better it would be if you quit, and visualize what would happen if you got cancer and died slowly and painfully.
Just throw all them away and get over it *****- jk, just talk to a phycologist
if you dont put them in your mouth you want smoke them.If that dont work get the patch.
GOOD LUCK
i quit smoking last year cold turkey. haven-t had one since.

I kept myself busy, and for the times when I had nothing to do, I chewed on straws. Quitting smoking is the best thing you can ever do for yourself! Another thing I did, was when I was finding it really hard, I would get online and discuss quitting smoking with others who were in the same position I was in. I think talking to others about quitting smoking helped the most! It really is hard, but don-t give up even if you have a relapse! The benefits are well worth it!
Ok, quitting is easy for some and so damn hard for others.

If we look at why people start smoking in the beginning we should look at the life circumstances that drove normal human beings into such habits.

It is an emotional journey in the house or family one is living in. This is not only limited to family but to the social groups and ones work.

Cut the emotional crap out of your life and you will cut the unnecessary things you will do to harm your body.

Here-s what I did first thing - get a hold of my life and decide what I want to do with my body as far as shoving down **** through it.

I started to decide for myself instead of letting others have an affect on me. I distanced myself form peoples problem either indirectly or directly aimed at me.

So be a strong minded person.
Be an individual thinker.
Decide what you want instead of making others happy about what they want you to do. (this is probably what peer pressure is all about).
Use patches as prescribed and have the want to and it will work!!!!

Any advice on ways to quit smoking?

Cheers
- just throw away your cigarettes and never smoke again (sort of hard...)
- ease off and gradually smoke less (eg 1 less every day or 1 every 12 hr instead of 6 hr) this is a little easier
- check out websites that have info about people who want to stop smoking/drinking
good luck :)
Try Chantix. It-s a prescription that really works. You take it for 3 months (12 weeks) They tell you to take it for 1 week and plan on a quit day during week 2. Don-t do it like that. You will gradually smoke less and less. By week 4-6, you just kind of stop. There were 6 of us at work on this and we all quit. I haven-t smoked for 4 months now and I don-t miss it at all. Good luck.
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
You could investigate the nicorette activestop program developed by experts to help smokers to quit and you can find it in a web search for -nicorette activestop-.

I have been smoking for 40 years. I started taking Chantix about 3 weeks ago and my stop date was the 1st of Jan. I can-t seem to do it. I was so manic and aggravated that I am now smoking about 6 cigs a day again. I was smoking 2 packs a day before. I know that everyone says you have to want to do it. I do, it was my idea to quit. Now I find that I don-t have the will power to do it. Any ideas?
I am on Chantix as well. I was a pack a day smoker. This is the 3rd time I-ve tried to quite (I did the patch and the gum- they are great for airplane flights but not for quitting).

I started a few days after you did. My stop date was January 3rd. I smoked about 5 cigs on the 3rd and 4th, 1 1/2 on the 5th and then stopped completely. This is my second day. While there is still desire, not enough to go to the store and buy them!

What I noticed about Chantix for me was cigarettes were no longer pleasurable. OK the taste was good and the inhaling good, but there was no rush so they stopped being useful to me.

I weigh about 130 pounds and am on the standard dosage.

Getting to my point now... It might take a few days longer for you to feel the effects of Chantix. Talk to your doctor, the drug might take longer to take effect in you, or you might need a higher dose.

The good news is that even if you do smoke, Chantix is designed to block the pleasure of your cigarette. So I am not suggesting that you keep on doing it -- it is also a habit that you are breaking -- but that don-t worry too much.

OK - on to the willpower thing. The Chantix has a GetQuit program that you can sign up for at:
http://www.chantix.com/content/The_GETQU…
They provide a bunch of tips and activities to get you started.

Keep your mouth busy with chewing gum. I like cinnamon gum because it is a bit hot and spicy, sort of like a smoke.

The biggest one for me...when I finally ran out of cigarettes from all of my stashes then I finally quit! Remove ashtrays. Get rid of cigarettes, give them away. Get rid of lighters. Launder smelly jackets and clothes that smell smoky.

If you have a partner that smokes or friend that smoke ask them not to smoke around you for a while. Tell them how important it is.

OK, clearly I am not a pro at this, but I want to quit this time. I want strong lungs and I don-t want to die because of smoking. I also want to have a family and I have to quit smoking to get pregnant.

My favorite motivator for quitting smoking right now: I will not give in to the tobacco companies. I will not let them take part of my paycheck and retirement savings. I will not let them get rich at my expense.

Enough from me. Best of luck on your journey.
I don-t understand it either. Each time I have quit has seemed to be a little easier than the time before. The first time I ever tried to quit I was going nuts by the end of the first day. My longest quit has been a little over a month.

Well, I just quit 3 days ago (cold turkey), and so far this time has been a breeze. The easiest yet so far. Hopefully this will be my last one.

Check out whyquit.com. They are a bit cultish, but there are lots of great idea-s there.

Best of luck!

Nicotine Anonymous- A 12 Step Program offering support to those who want to quit cigarettes and quit smoking and stop other forms of tobacco and nicotine addiction.
Go now: http://healthylifeday.com/quitsmoking/
it is an addiction for many years that needs to be treated. consult your doctor for the best way to quit. as you said, you should have the willpower to quit. you can do this.
Just don-t give up, well done you-re now on 6 cigs a day. You must be proud of yourself. There-s really nothing more to do than YOU have to want it. Just trust yourself, you don-t want to give up just because some part of your brain says I can-t do it anymore. You came so far and it would be a shame to start again.
Try not to use anything that still gives you nicotine. Of course you-ll have withdrawel symptoms thats expected. Try another -hobby- for when you get the urge like chewing gum or....as bad as some think it is....biting your nails (thats the usual thing that replaces it) Heres some tips I found. All the best!!!
Perhaps you should contact the Quitline or join a Quit Smoking Clinic.
Chantix studies claim that only 44% quit after 12 weeks. You are not at the 12 weeks yet. All you have to do is keep trying to quit. I know that it is hard, and I know that it sucks. I know that it is a long process. Chantix is supposed to block the nicotine receptors so you don-t get that -high- when inhaling. That is the only thing that Chantix will do. You have to overcome the mental/ psychological part of quitting yourself. Chantix, will only put you through the physical withdrawal, because it is blocking the nicotine. It will not help you with the habitual part of smoking. You have to do that with your own willpower.

I tried the laser therapy back in August. While, I didn-t physically crave a cig, I mentally really wanted one. It was very hard. I messed up a few times, and then just did cold turkey. I struggle with it everyday and it has been 4-5 months now. I know that it sucks.

Good luck!

Try these, it might help you quit altogether. It is a proven fact that people who stop smoking start back-up . These are the safe cigarette.

My mother has tried about everything to quit smoking. She has even tried hypnosis. The nicotine gum did not even work for her.

There is a more expensive way to quit smoking, but I have seen the biggest improvement with a prescription called Chantix. It is a gradual way to stop smoking. In my opinion it is the healthiest way to go about it. It messes with the receptors that have to do with the urge to smoke.

I noticed a great change within the first few days; she really did not have much of a need to smoke. The only time she has a hard time with not smoking is when she is bored.

I highly recommend this, but the downfall is that you may have really intense dreams, some mood swings, or nausea.

Good luck! :)
I agree with Helen J. Gum are good way to quit smoking. My friend had the same problem and he took the help of nicotine gum, whenever he felt like smoking he used one. The best point is that he received a free sample of 100 gum to try for free, they helped him and he then continued with them till he quit. I am sure it can help you too, you can also ask for free sample, he got it from the resource included below.. All the Best!!!
You can try
Try chewing those nicotine gums.
Or gradually decrease the amount of cigarettes you smoke everyday.

I hope this helps.
And please stop smoking. :(

chew chewing gum when you desire. chew little bit of tobacco when you cant live w/o cigarette. and finally shift to e cigarette.which is safe.
I feel your pain. I set a date and I just quit 10 days ago cold turkey, but I-m still fighting the urge to go buy a pack. I-m using nicorette gum which has helped a little.

The best thing you can do is to focus on something to take your mind off the cravings. I started on a health and fitness craze and Im trying to lose weight. It sounds like you are doing two hard things at once, quitting smoking and starting exercising, but it has helped me so far.

I hear the first week is the hardest so just try to tough it out and avoid things that will get you smoking, like drinking and other smokers. Good luck.
cold turkey. lots of water and a good multi vitamin. forewarn all people that you are coming in contact with that you are quitting.stay busy and stay away from people who are smoking. clean your house thoroughly. in a week of no smoking your sense of smell will change and you won-t believe just how bad your house, clothes and body used to smell when you were smoking. it-s really gross.if cold turkey is out of the question try to just go longer between smokes until you are no longer smoking.buy one pack keep what you need for the day and make them last even if you have to give the pack to some one to hang on to so you don-t cheat.good luck. also your doctor can give you the patch but my hubby found that they irritated his skin so he didn-t use them.

Has anyone successfully quit smoking cigarettes after smoking for a long time? -

I am 26 and have been smoking since I was 13. I have periods where I quit for a few months and even once I quit for 2 years. I want to quit for good. I-d like to hear from anyone who used to smoke for a long time and is now quit and what their secrets are. I would appreciate it very much! Thanks!
I quit -cold turkey- for over 9 years, after having smoked for about 14 years. About five years ago, my mom broke her neck, and I started smoking again from all of the stress! She never was able to get out of bed again, and passed away from lung cancer about 2 1/2 years ago. I quit again yesterday, -cold turkey-, on what would have been my mom-s birthday! This time forever! My secret is willpower, pure and simple. No tricks, no gimmicks, no gum, no patches. You have it within yourself, you just have to trust in yourself to bring it out.
I sucked on lollipops and ATE toothpicks (the peppermint ones).
Yes, I bit off little pieces, chewed them for awhile and swallowed them. I smoked for thirteen years. I do cheat occasionally (like when my baby was in the hospital) but I always feel like crap afterwards. It-s been five years since I quit, but only 2 1/2 months since my last smoke.

They also make these things that look like plastic cigarettes that you can suck on. Or try Zyban, it helps to ease the tension and anxiety.

Good luck.
I smoked on and off from 11-13, then steadily till 31. I quit a few times, but started back. This time, I have been quit for 18 months, and swear never to return to them. Everytime I think about starting again, I think about how hard it was to quit and how much better I feel now. When I smoked, I couldn-t run 1 mile, now I-m doing my first 10k (6.2 miles). I could never do that if I still smoked. Think about how much healthier you will be without the cigarettes. That-s what worked for me.
I SMOKED FOR 20 YEARS - GOT BRONCHITIS (?) AND COULDN-T INHALE THE SMOKE - PUT CIGS AWAY TILL I GOT BETTER AND I NEVER WENT BACK TO THEM -HOWEVER, I DID KEEP MY LAST UNOPENED PACK FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS BEFORE I TOSSED IT. GOOD LUCK!
Yes, I have quit. You just don-t allow yourself to smoke. You just don-t do it anymore. You can do it with Gods help. Just keep telling yourself, I am better than this, smoking stinks, it-s expensive, it-s unhealthy, - I will not do it anymore.

I quit 21 yrs. ago. By the way that was on December 11, 1985. I just got up one morning smoking 3 cigs before I even got out of bed - decided, that-s it, I quit! I still have the urge though and I know if I ever smoke even one, I-ll be hooked again. I-m 47 now.

Tip: Best way to quit is -Cold Turkey.- Forget all the patches - all that other crap, just do it.

Paul
Stopping smoking can be very difficult.
Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
I have been smoking 33 years and quitting for 30 good luck try gum hypnotism drawing on a straw whatever crutch you may need to beat it good luck.My grand mother quit by becomming very religious but dies of thyroid cancer after beating breast cancer.
I quit. Like you, I started in my early teens, and by the time I was in my mid to late 20s, I wanted to quit. I used gum, not the kind for smokers, just regular sugar-free gum, and I kept it in my mouth all the time. My biggest problem was at bars. I basically had to stop going. It really took me about 3 years from the time I made up my mind. I made myself cut back to 2 cigarettes a day, and I did that for about a year, then I-d smoke only on the weekends, 2 a day, then finally, I ended up smoking only occassionally the last year, maybe twice a month, until it finally started disgusting me to smell it.

I feel for you because it-s an aweful addiction. Fortunately, the physical addition ends in only 3-4 days cold turkey; it-s the psychological part that-s so hard. Good luck. You CAN do this.
Try organic cocoa beans in a banana smoothie.

It worked for my roommate who smoked for twenty-five years. He has not smoked tobacco in over a year.

Of course he was hooked on the smoothies for a few months. (But that might be because of all the pot he smokes.)

Good Health to You,

P.S. I just saw a site for laser therapy to stop smoking, very interesting. Freedom Laser Therapy...

I very badly want to quit smoking. Are there some ways to keep myself from carving for Smoke?
lessen your smoke.
Hearing the decision to quit from you, yourself is very rewarding and could warrant a higher rate of success if you would not fall into temptation to smoke again. However, quitting does not happen overtime. It takes time-days, weeks, or perhaps even months. First of all I would suggest that you get rid of any cigarettes that is still in your possession and stay away from it. Also it is advisable to chew on something like a gum for instance to keep your mouth busy especially when you have these cravings for nicotine. Moreover, involve your family in your decision to stop smoking for they are the ones who can help you manage your problem and keep track of you whenever temptations knocks at your door. Try to keep yourself busy like focus more on your hobbies and things that you enjoy aside from smoking.

By the way, have you tried nicotine patches? If no, you might wanna check on that. I hear it works. If the day would pass without you touching that cigar then you should always congratulate yourself. Good luck and hoping the best for you...

Why?
Why do you want to?
It-s easier if you have a definate reason for giving up

I used to be a 40 a day smoker when my wife said sh had to give up (5 a day) because she was pregnant with our first. So decided it was only fair that I did too, this was a lot easier than i thought it would be.

One tip if you haven-t smoked for two days just tell yourself that it will be easier to go another day, and so on eacj day, before you realise it you won- of smoked for a month, just build day by day.

good luck,hope you do it
yes there is a way to make you stop smoking, try to look around you do you think the people around you like the smell of your smoke and you could also avoid going to the store just to buy smoke. it saves time and with a little exercise you could restore your health before you started smoking
You have to quit, just cold turkey. It is hard work and don-t be surprised if you become depressed. I smoked for 14 years and quit going on three years ago. There are still days that I crave cigarettes, but the smell like crap and I know they are going to taste twice as bad. Good Luck!!!
Try to go to some clinic for injection. Some clinic has this kind of medication. Or, you keep the cigarettes in a drawer and lock it and tell someone to keep the keys.
just gradually decrease what you smoke. i started on monday with a whole pack, and by the end of the week i only had 5 to smoke that day. by the time you get to the last day, you should be more ready to kick it.
Show this website to those people concern and they will think twice about smoking it has some articles, picture, videos about smoking. http://smoking-kills.weebly.com
I replaced it with jopints until that go too expensive cuz I don-t believe that weed is addicting as cigerettes it worked for me!
Check out www.freewebs.com/stopsmokingforever
dont put urself in to a position where u can smoke.. take up a hobby.. go camping.. or start drinking.. up to u

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

I had to do it on my own because I didn-t want people telling me what to do. I cut down drastically to about 5- 10 a day and then I quit all together. I bought some Nicotrol INhalers, as I thought they would be like having something in your hand just like a cig and puffing on it. They helped dramatically!! But now I am not even using them, but still feel the urge for them because of the nicotine. I don-t miss the smoke and the smell, which is good, just the affects of the drug I think. Another thing is I quit drinking so I wasn-t in -bars- and hanging around others that smoked..So that helped tremendously not being around it.!!! Hope this helps and you get stopped.. GOOD LUCK !!! Had to add that I am 3 months smoke free...
Don-t buy any more cigarettes easy as that. Chew some gum.
I think the best way to quit smoking is using the nicotine patch or just go cold turkey. Let me tell you right now its going to be a long hard process. But you can do it!! You will start having withdrawal symptoms and your body is going to want that cigarette and at times your gonna want to light up but fight that urge! If you can last for 2 weeks then the hardest is over. For the first two weeks you will feel really sick and will want to give up just hold on!! After the two weeks you will begin to breathe better and will feel like a whole new person. Hang in there!
I got a really good friend to stop by being her smoking coach. For the fist week you get 5 a day. The second 4 and so on and so on. If she was on her 4th week and was smoking her 5th one for the day I would take it out of her mouth and step on it. You basicly just need someone to be on you to stop all the time. My friend stoped in only 3 weeks.
From reading the answers you have gotten already, none of these people are smokers.

I have been smoking since I was 12. I -quit- for 5 years, and have been back smoking for 7 years.

The first thing you must have is the want to. If you don-t want to quit, it will just about be impossible. I -quit- because I was pregnant and it made me sick -- thus I wanted to. But the longer it went on the more I wanted to smoke. So know that it is possible to -fall off the wagon-.

I had allergic reactions to the medications the doctor gave me to quit (wellbutrin) as well as the patch, so that won-t work for me. I have tried a -smoking diary- in the past. Write down every time you light up, and what you are doing. After about 2 weeks, figure out an average of how many cigarettes you smoke a day. Then divide by 24 hours, and smoke on a schedule (if you smoke 24 cigarettes, smoke one an hour, etc). Then take one away. Two days later, take another away. Adjust how far apart your cigarettes are as you take them away. Eventually, you will not be smoking. If you fall off your schedule, start over. Use the gum or patch if it helps you, but if not quit using them, cause you are just getting more nicotine using them (and I have issues with using them cause it is just replacing how you get an addictive substance, not addressing the addiction).

Talk to your doctor. They have many ways to help you. But before you do anything, get the first step down -- want to quit.
make up your mind that you will quit and you will find a way.
decrease the amount you smoke slowly... kinda like weening yourself off of them... there are patches and pills and gum... you just have to shop around and see what works for you

hope your able to successfully quit

~~**wyndorah**~~
1. Use the words -Stop Smoking-. If you say
I quit smoking, that means you will never
smoke again and you don-t know if that is
true. I stopped for 9yrs., and 11mos. and
started up again in 2001 and am still smoking
those sticks today.
2. If you have it in your head that you are
serious about stopping, then you will be
able to stop.

When I stopped smoking my Mom was sick and we thought she had cancer. I made a promise to myself that if everything was okay I would finish out the cigarettes I had and then stop. Mom was okay and I kept my promise.
Nine years and Eleven months later my Dad was dying from cancer and I got extremely mad and just started smoking again.

By the way, when I stopped I used nothing but my own willpower, no patches, gum or drugs.

Good luck to you!
My mom quit smoking.... she did it by taking Wellbutrin though. I think it is trading one addiction for another but hey i guess if you want to get the job done, it works. She has beeen smoke free for over a month now, and she said she hardly gets craving, but when she does she said its usually when shes out drinking with her buddies and evryone is drunnk and lighting up cigarettes. but you just gotta be strong. i guess taking a pill is better than smoking cigaretted though ( on a healthy scale )
Simple answer is -don-t light up-. Find something else to do with your time. Go to the library, keep busy, get a hands-on hobby. Get the patch or gum or whatever.

Cancer - emphysema certainly cure smoking if all else fails.
I think is by putting a picture of a lung with cancer, and pictures of people in bed suffering from lung cancer or other associated diseases. put it in your refrigerator, your coputer at work. I have heard of people using the patch and they said it didn-t work. I have heard of people using hypno therapy that did work. Just find what is good for you by trying things out. But just make sure you set your mind to it. GOod Luck
The best thing to do is wean yourself off. Start by cutting back and then come up with a plan. The most effective plan that I have seen work is once you have cut back to less than a pack a day then start limiting yourself. When you think you want a cigarette tell yourself that you are going to wait ten minutes before you have one. And each time you want one add ten more minutes. Pretty soon you will find yourself going most of the day without a cigarette. It is a lot easier on your body to cut back. It is a shock to the system to just quit cold turkey and it usually leads to upper respiratory problems such as bronchitis. But first and foremost you have to make the decision that you are ready and then stick to it. It also helps to remind yourself frequently why you are quitting in the first place.
Definitely read -The Easy Way to Stop Smoking- - by Allen Carr along with whatever method you choose. While not a smoker myself, I-ve had two friends who smoked for years and never lit up again after reading it. Cant say it works for everyone, but I was impressed.
The best way is to really be committed to quitting; knowing that you don-t want to continue a slow suicide. I quit after 40 years of smoking after developing shortness of breath and asthma. Every time I would even look at a cigarette I would tell myself -It-s not even an option in my life anymore-. The message finally just sunk in my brain until I completely consider myself a non-smoker. Don-t even miss it, and I-m breathing so much better. Go for it. It is so worth it.

I can-t understand your question. Could you try rewriting it and take the time to check the wording before submitting. I will be happy to answer your question as soon as I can understand it.
My husband quit smoking several year ago - What he did was drink copious amounts of citrus juice. Every time he wanted a cigarette he would drink 2 oz of 100% pink grapefuilt juice (pink because it-s sweeter and you cannot add sugar because the sugar would cause more of a craving)
it was very hard for him but he did it. The doctor told him that grapefruit juice would take away his craving for nicotine - and it really did - but slowly!
I also had a brother who quit smoking many years ago - but in order to quit he took up chewing coppenhagen. I know it was a trade off - but a better option than smoking.
Good Luck - And stick with it! You can do it just don-t let the craving defeat you
It-s time to chill the bird. GO Total Cold Turkey.
The express elevator is right around the corner if you don-t......
Get the patch from your doctor right away and after a couple of months lung improvement you-ll be ready to cut back on the patch gradually..... If you have smoked more than 10 years your lungs will never go back to their original condition, but you can get 80% back...... It will take at least one year........

I never smoked because my dad, a career ARMY officer, showed me very brutally how easy it is to find a smoker in the woods at night, and Viet Nam was on big time when I was in High School. I have other severe medical problems due to military chemical exposure that are treatable but are not curable. My stuff never gets better, it always gets worse. It-s so rare it took 8 years to get it diagnosed and treated......

It-s a real change in view point to know what you-re going to die of,,, all you have to do is fill in the -when- box..........

How do i quit smoking? -

i-ve been smoking for only a year
Antonaki, this is hard...It is an addiction..Just you you have to decide it, and throw away everything reminds you smoking...ashtrays,cigarettes...(I always say it...but...lets see if i do it)
I spoke with my doctor at a checkup. She put me on Wellbutrin XL. (It is available in a generic.) I took a pill a day for a week and then was told to attempt the first smoke-free day on day 8. Wow!!! By day six the cigarettes even tasted bad. Really bad. And the nicotine effect was just not there. It was pretty much over after that. I have cheated twice (normally happens so don-t sweat it), but have not been able to smoke more than 3 puffs before getting disgusted and putting it out in both cases. I have been smoke-free for a year. No cheating.

Of course, drink lots of water and try a gentle walk around the block everyday or some form of exercise. The first few weeks you may cough and have stuffy sinuses, but your body is just undoing the damage you have done from smoking. Avoid people who smoke or tell smoking friends to deny you cigs. Go to non-smoking restaurants for drinks, etc. You can really control a lot by controlling your environment.

You can do cold turkey as well. A good site is WhyQuit.com for cold turkey support. I tried this and had some success reducing the cigs, but I needed the help of a doctor to really kick it. This is just what worked for me. You may be different! :-)

Be gentle with yourself and stick with it. You may slip a few days, but just tell yourself that you are now a non-smoker and keep plugging away. You can do this! Best wishes.
Cold turkey is hard but best. There are many options now, lozenges, gums, and patches. When I quit I used the patches at first. I chewed lots of sugar free gum (like Orbit) and the stronger the flavor the better. Suckers also helped me with the hand-to-mouth motions. Drink plenty of water to flush out the nicotine. Exercise to keep your mind off of it. The first month is tough, but since you have only been smoking a year, it may not be that bad.
There are many methods:
nicotene gum, cold turkey, hypnosis, nicotene patches, there are new types of medicine......................

Just pray to God daily and he will help you.
first of all ,in order to stop smoking,,u need to determine and agree its bad for your health.,.,.second is gradual withdraw,,,of addiction,,,by smoking a cigarrette less daily for a week,,then u go inot the cleaning zone,,,get rid of all cigareete related stuff ,lighters,ashtrays...and avoid smokers,,and stop smoking,,u will face headaches .,and cravings u over come them by moving around more,,,and taking analgesic s,,best is 2-3 tablets of paracetamol - caffeine(panadol extra)..over next 4-5 days u will get edgy ,,and try to not socialize or go near places with smokers,,,then bang its over...just u need maybe 1-3 months your respiratort cells will change and u get rid of the tar and chemicals plugging the lungs ,best of luck(ITS BETTER THAN GOING WITH GUMS AND PATCHES THIS METHOD)
Go to your docter.

For people who have quit smoking? -

I-ve decided to quit smoking, my quit date is the 29th of this month. But I don-t know which to use the patch or gum? Has anyone sucessfully quit from using any of these? I-m leaning toward the gum, but not sure. Please help. Thank you!
My friend quit a 20 a day ciggy habit but now has a 30 a day gum habit!! Be careful!!
I quit using the NRT gum. I know people who have used patches and quit with no problems also alot ot people who quit cold turkey. I suggest you thoroughly check out all options available to you and take it from there. Everyones different but will power is still needed whatever you choose. Also you could check out the author Alan Carr I used his easyway method and its been really easy, also Smokeworm and the Whyquit website. Remember - Knowledge is Power. Good Luck for the 29th.
I quit cold turkey 3 years ago and I didn-t use either. Maybe you should ask your doctor for a prescription for Chantix. I know about three people that have had success with that program. Whatever you choose I wish you lots of luck. Quitting is hard and you just have to remember to take it day by day.
Cold turkey is definately the way to go. Been 13 years since my last one. The only thing that I used was regualr mint gum.
cold turkey for me as well; it-s been 9 years

I quit smoking today and would like to know what i can expect over the coming weeks in terms of withdrawals? -

etc.
For the first couple of days, you may feel a kind of heaviness or tightness in your chest when you get the urge to smoke. Nothings wrong, and it will pass. You may develop a cough. It-ll pass too. You may also find you are irritable, eat more, and gain a few pounds. All of those things will go away without you having to do anything about them.

Congratulations!
you may notice yourself starting to eat more you may get upset a little quicker yeah definitly on the edge but yes you will notice when frusturated you-ll grab something to eat you can also expect to gain weight cause some reason smoking speeds your metabolism when you all of a sudden quit your metabolism slows down dramatically remember after 72 hrs. its all in your head nicotine is out of your system after 3 full days
ARRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

AAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

stick with it...
don-t drink alcohol....

chew gum--sugar free candy to snack on..
drink plenty of water.....
after three or four days that tar and nicotine will be flushed out.
well iquit last week and u will get a little edgey and jumpy but be strong and u should succied oh and heres a tip keep anasty cigar arond for a emergancy
It depends on how long you have been smoking and how many packs per day. Congratulations I quit in March. The best way is go cold turkey, stop all at once after your mind is set. The urge hits you with wanting something in your mouth, or reaching for the pack that isn-t there. I carry 2 packs in my car as a reminder. I had open heart surgery with 4 bypasses and a $70,000 bill. When I get that strong urge I look at them and remind myself what I went through just to get up.Good luck, set your mind and you too can stay quit.
You will probably experience interrupted sleep. You will also not be as patient with people as you were yesterday. You will cough up black stuff because your lungs starts cleaning themselves immediately. Probably gain a little extra weight.
It is a tough thing, I did it once myself... the hardest part of quitting smking is avoiding the times you enjoy smoking the most ie: when talking the phone (stay off phone) after large meals (eat small meals/snacks, driving in car (chew gum)... thsoe are the tough things.. as far as a physical pain.... or longing.. nah.. its all psychological.. fight it!
clenching of the teeth , blowing out air from your mouth as if you are blowing out smoke , chewing alot of gum ...and over eating or some other bad habit to replace the old one..... be strong and choose wisely....
This is what happened to me
I was very tired for like 4 or 5 days...not really irratable but just constantly thinking about it...a little insomnia...hungry all the time...headaches like you wouldnt believe...make sure to drink alot of water and try to avoid coffee at all costs..coffee always made me want to smoke..try to avoid places where people smoke for a week or so too because the smell will make you want a cig so bad

Go Cold Turkey...its the only way..patches and gum only delay the process..
Good for you. You-re likely to be irritable, jumpy, and crave smokes for a while. After a few days the jumpiness and irritability will reduce. The craving will stay with you for a long time--months. It will be easy to start again.
You-ll also not be able to keep enough food in your mouth often enough so weight gain is probable.
cold turkey you should have gotten the patch your body need time to adjust go to the drugstore and buy the patch
Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulateyourself on completing the first day - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
1. Extreme cravings
2. possible weight gain
3. sleepiness
that is mainly what i experienced when i quit and it all depends on how much you smoked for and how often and how long

i been smokin for 2 and half years and i want to quit and also i want to learn how to recover from the short endurance and the damage that was done to my body :D
When you quit, start to exercise and eat right. You-ll recover slowly, but will recover eventually. Two years is not that bad in the grand scheme of things. Good luck!

If you need a product to help you quit, check out this site:

Quit it. And drink plenty of water, have regular exercising and eat healthy diet, they will help. I quit it cold turkey for 45 days after over 30 years of smoking. Good luck to us!

My new year resolution is stop smoking. What is the most effective method to rid one of this deadly habit?
You have to replace a habitual hobby with another. Instead of smoking, eat carrot sticks, chew gum, or do something else that-s healthy in order to make it nearly impossible for you to smoke. Commit, Nicorette or nicotine patches would be last resort, but they-ve all been proven to be effective, and also expensive.
Everytime you want to smoke, chew a piece of gum. Smokers always have to have something in their mouth, so chew gum, have a lollypop, have a mint.....eat a candy. Or you can draw a picture of lungs and color it black!
jump off a bridge for me
What I-ve been told by those who smoke is that quiting is really more of a commitment and decision than anything else. MAKE UP YOUR MIND you will throw away that last pack, and that is IT.
The only method that works is proper motivation. If you are not really ready to quit, whatever method you choose will not work. If you are ready to quit, whatever method you choose will work.
well l been a smoker for years and lm with you on this and lts just an awful habit to quit. but ask your doctor cause theres pills out now that you can take to quit
Try to get more information regarding some ways to stop smoking at my profile.
if ur going to quit smoking u will have to fight hard against it
its not going to be easy but take same quit smoking medison (sorry about the spelling) and u will have to give it a fight for about 2 to 3 weeks go on u can quit smoking.u quit smoking and peaple around you will be much better health
Chewing gum can help with the oral fixation. Myself, I liked having something in my hands, so I got a stress ball and a hand exerciser if I felt myself getting fidgety.

The problem a lot of people run into is the fact that it-s such a big part of their routine. Try varying your routine in other ways so that you won-t notice it nearly as much. Waking up at a different time, taking breaks and doing something different, taking walks, etc.

The nicotine cravings suck, but I promise they will eventually go away. A lot of people like to eat if they get them, and this can help, but just be careful you don-t overeat. A lot of people trying to quit end up gaining a lot of weight because of this.
The patch worked for my son. I just quit.

I wanna quit smoking can anyone help? -

Heeyah i wanna quit smoking but i know know the best way how. My doctor said i have to go to one of those group things, but i don-t think that-s for me. And i know about the inhaler ETC you can buy but i know what which one is for me. Does anyone know how i can get cigarettes off my mind. Ive only have two today which is good (:
Try the nicotine patches
I needed to cut down gradually in order to quit. The patch did nothing for me, but the gum helped. It-s advised that you don-t smoke at all while using either of these, so toss your cigs. I not only missed the nicotine at first, I missed the -inhale-, so a quick intake of air through pursed lips helped. Distractions help, too. I never, ever thought a group would help me, but in combination with tossing my smokes, gum, breathing, and distractions, they did make a difference. Good luck!
i quit by reading a book called - The easy way to stop smoking- by Alan Carr. it-s about 15 bucks. and you smoke while you read it and then at the end, you smoke one more cigarette and then you have quit for good like magic. it-s amazing. and you don-t have withdrawals .. it-s almost too good to believe. good luck :D
well i don-t know if this will help you, but try distracting yourself like what do you like to dddo, maybe play sports, read.
You can also try eating sun flower seed , cause your so occupied in tasaking the shells off that you forget about your need.
Try to do things that lead you off track of smoking.
but otherwise ide suggest the group.

but if some how neither works and your willing to spend a good few bucks

http://www.e-cig.org

this dosent necessarily mean that it will make you stop its just a better solution.
I-ve heard that hypno-therapy works. I-m not really sure where to find out information about it but if you type it into Google you should get heaps of answers. Good luck and I think you-re doing the right thing :)
wean yourself off, start at 10 the 1st day, 9 the 2nd day and so on till you get to 1 and you will be off them.
ITS ALL IN YOUR HEAD, JUST DONT THINK ABOUT IT ANYMORE AND MOVE ON

is it proven to help quit smoking?
i used Nicotrol Inhaler. i do not feel it helped me quit smoking [i started back again] but my main issue is the actual ACT of smoking, so constantly puffing on the inhaler substituted puffing on a cigarrette. I suggest you DO use a nicotine replacement, because if you dont, you are likely to suffer from withdrawal. Nicotine withdrawal could definitely cause a person’s mood to get worse. The symptoms of Nicotine withdrawal are:

1) dysphoric or depressed mood

2) insomnia

3) irritability, frustration, or anger

4) anxiety

5) difficulty concentrating

6) restlessness

7) decreased heart rate

8) increased appetite or weight gain.
I used this unconventional spray stuff... it-s called -smoke control- by this brand -king bio-
*shrug* all I did was spray it in my mouth/under my tongue a few times a day. then I lost it a month or two later and haven-t used anything since. it-s a homeopathic remedy so it-s hard to understand how it works, but it worked great for me.. the day after I quit smoking I was sooo much happier! I couldn-t believe it.. of course I-ve still had cravings, but I think that it-s better to go with that than a patch that is still giving you nicotine, which is so icky..... =)p

first of all u shouldnt quit smoking suddenly
u have to do it gradually
for example u used to smoke 10 cigarettes daily
try to reduce that n umber for the next week 8
for the next 6 per day
for the nest week 3
and till u smoke 1 cigarette each week
blood renew itself each week
so ur body used to need more smoke from ur cigarettes
so try this
Don-t smoke anymore.
Listen very carefully, this is the absolute best way, DO NOT LIGHT THE CIGARETTE!!
Get a horrible cold and sinus infection. Worked for me, I couln-t stand the smell of smoke for about 6 weeks. When the cold was gone, so were the cravings. I still smoke occasionally, but I don-t have the habit, and I can take them or leave them.
i wanna ask the same thing!! i hate not being able to quit real fast /easy but i heard cold turkey is the best, only way.
Try to count how much money u spend on smoking each month. See how much u could save each year? What all u could by with that money? Good luck;)
shifting to some other habit which will not turn to columns of vice
Well, first you have to really want to give up. Smoking is very addictive, and stopping can sometimes be difficult. There are patches that you can get from stores like CVS and Walgreens that help you stop smoking(they decrease your attatchment to smoking..or somthing of that sort). Theres lots of different ways(that im not really educated on) but you can ask people who work at pharmacies and stuff. I wish you best of luck=)
same dont smoke
Hypnosis
well here-s how i quit i just threw away lighter and cigs and never pick them back up
Waxingthe and kobay have no idea! I am trying too and it-s very difficult, heroin addicts get more sympathy! I just try to stay busy and not do the things that I normally smoke doing, for instance I normally drink vodka and coke, now I dring wine so that I won-t miss the cigarette so much. Try to stay away from the things you associate with smoking.
Hi,

I quit this time last year having had a 30 a day habit. I-d tried and failed with allsorts until I a friend recommended this program - see below.

It also came with a 100% money back guarantee and has a 90% success rate - can-t say fairer than that!

All the best.

I quit smoking 3 days ago and started using the patch. i have felt tired and sick since... is this normal? -

i feel like everything is all bright. and i have heart burn. can you smoke at all while on the patch. i have not i was just wondering. are these symptoms just from not smoking or are they also from the patch?
Tired ? Yes As nicotine is a powerful stimulant and now you are getting less in an indirect way. Sick? Hmmm. maybe you are having a reaction to the patch but I never had that. Heart burn ? never heard of that either. Have you been eating a lot more ? And close to bed time?
I have never used the patch but when I quit smoking I felt a little queasy-and tired-but it could be from the patch-can you try to quit without the patch?

Well like I said I haven-t used the patch-but look on the box to see if it lists that as the side effects?

The best advice I can give for quitting is look up quit smoking on the internet you will see a boat load of web-sites that list all the people who wish they would have quit smoking when they had the chance, That worked for me....
You are going thru withdrawal. When you put the patch on in the AM, you get an initial hit of nicotine in the first hour, but then it tapers off during the day. I would go nuts at night since the patch would wear off and smoked 1 cig just to get me thru the night. I would only inhale it about half the time and just hold the smoke in my mouth for the taste.
From my experience, what you-re feeling is quite normal for someone taking Xyban/Welbutrin, orally or by patch.

You could smoke, but you-ll feel all that, but more so.

Stopping smoking is doing the best thing you can for your health.

(Your appetite will probably be duller. If you-re careful to eat good foods, this may be a good time to drop a few pounds.)
NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!!!

Free videos and support to get that nicotine monkey off of your back! The drug culture--thinking that taking one drug will get you off of the most addicting substance on earth--nicotine, makes no sense to me.

Really the only way you can help is not to smoke areound them. Everything else they have to do themselves.
They have 2 want 2 quit. Patches work. It-s a hard habit to quit. It is a routine too. They have to change their life in order 2 quit. U can be supportive. Hope this helped.
Be as supportive as possible, and remember that nagging doesn-t work.
get them to start chewing gum
when they have a craving for a smoke
start doing some exercise
a walk a day
then increase the exercise
to maybe a jog, swim, or bike riding
be patient and understand how hard it is and even if they go back encourage them to stop and not be mad at them fora weak moment
u can-t do anything but be supportive. perhaps help them avoid tempting situations.
This is not a cure-all but,

Hypnotherapy could help
Encouragement of thei goals and don-t YOU smoke.
If they actually want to quit, you can help!

Don-t smoke around them.
Carry gum in case they have a craving.
Don-t let them smoke around you.
Suggest activities where there will not be much smoking. IE. Go to a party at your local club, rather than someone-s house.
Make sure they know you support their decision, and offer to be an on-call friend in case they need someone to talk them out of having a smoke. Believe it or not, it is a big help.
Also, try not to talk about smoking or quitting smoking around them. Just the reminder of a cigarette can bring on a craving.

I hope this helps you out, I-m sure I could think of more given time. Just remember, you are helping just by being a friend and supporting their decision. If they fail, it is not your fault. Also, if they fail, don-t judge them. It will make it harder for them to try again. Just because they fall off of the wagon, doesn-t mean that they won-t accept the arm of a friend to help them climb back on.
If they seriously want to quit, I simply don-t allow them to smoke around me. The rest is up to them.
Do not lecture to them by saying how this or how that. The person already knows this.

Put up with there snapping at you and the irritability without saying one word to them.

Best thing to do when someone is quitting smoking is keep your mouth shut!! Worst thing about non smokers or those who had quit is they think they are so much better then the one smoking. What works for one to stop doesn-t work for another. Do not be one of these kinds of people.

How long after i quit smoking can i use a nicotine patch? -

ok i hade my last cig around 6pm and now it-s midnight and i REALLY REALLY REALLY need a cig. can i just put a patch on now or do i have to wait a while longer?
Actually you can put the patch on right after you put your last cigarette. Generally it takes a little bit for the nicotine from the patch to give you the full benefit anyway. The suggestion is not to smoke while wearing the patch and wait at least 2 hours if your going to take it off to smoke. You surely can talk to a Pharmacist but pretty sure you-ll hear the same thing. The mg that you use is based on how much you smoked a day. A pack/day generally says use 21mg. Best of luck. Understand that some people have vivid dreams at night when wearing it to bed if you can stand that then you really ought to wear it the full 24 hours so when getting up in the morning you still have enough nicotine in your system to put on your new patch.
You should definitely read the directions or go to talk to a pharmacist, before using the patches. To be honest, you should just wait until you know the information before saying -this is my last one.- You can go tomorrow to find out as soon as possible and once you know for SURE. Then start to use them properly when you know how.
Hope thats okay advice.
Don-t smoke while using the patches!
Make sure you have a strong heart too, with no concerning heart conditions, before using the patch.
Ask a pharmacist, he will be able to tell you!

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

What is the best way to quit smoking? -

My mom is 41 years old and has smoked since she was 16. She has now decided to quit. She was wanting to try the patches but doesn-t know which ones would work best. What would be the best ones for her? Or is there another method that would be better?
Chantix works really well! Both of my parents smoked for more than 20 years and this really helped them out.
Hi Latasha,

It-s good that you are concerned about your mother and are willing to help her. Smokers need people like you who can support them during the process of quitting. Well done for at least taking the first step to find out how to quit smoking.

I was a smoker before and I successfully quit because I decided to to quit. Your mother has already got what that first requirement - the desire to quit and that-s good. Everything from here, even though, it sounds hard in the first place is going to be easy because she has that desire to quit.

If you ask me, I would say there are many methods out there that she can try. The results vary from person to person so it-s hard to say what work for some people will work for others.

The way I quit ? I just go cold-turkey. I just quit. Yes, cold turkey is difficult if you don-t know how to do it. There are ways that can ease the process of quitting using cold turkey. For example, to have supportive people around to accompany the smokers during nicotine craving. Those supportive people will keep them occupied with something. Another way is to have a 30-day calendar that tracks your progress. This calendar will remind you about your progress and yes that will have some psychological benefit on you - you simply don-t want to destroy your result by start to smoke again in the middle of your progress. There are many more ways.

That-s all I can say for now. There are many more methods that you can look for. Just keep looking and find what works for your mother. I wish you good luck !!!
Well... There is no easy answer to this.

The patches contain the same thing as the cigarettes do which help stop the cravings which proves my point. It-s the chemicals they add to cigarettes and not the actual pure tobacco that is bad.

She can remain more or less healthy and still smoke if she smokes all natural tobacco w/o additives which is hard to come by these days.

http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/are-nicotine-patches-harmful.html

Notice how they say that the chemicals are cancerous?

The person who answered here states -you can safely use nicotine replacement for the rest of your life if you need to-

Which, again, proves my point that it (the patch) has the same components as tobacco.

But something your mother could do to help her stop smoking is to get lots of exercise.

Exercise creates acetylcholine in the brain which is the same thing that smoking does. That is why smokers crave cigarettes.
Acetylcholine helps people deal with stress and anxiety, which is why when people aren-t feeling top notch, they smoke more.

Acetylcholine gets depleted because society is such that there isn-t a day where someone isn-t stressed/sad/anxious, therefore we use a lot and need more each day which can create chain smokers.

So, as I said before, exercise will help her a lot and also doing saunas :)
I think this is one of your best decisions. You must know what are the advantages of quitting:

This will keep you motivated throughout. My friend was chain smoker and he quit. He use to say, just be mentally strong and you can do it. Here are some tips that helped him:

my mum has finally quit smoking
so when ever she usually smokes, i was thinking on getting her a new hobby like when ever she wants a smoke mabye she could have a block of chocoalte or something?

any ideas?
Chocolate is a good idea but unhealthy and expensive.

I would recommend sunflower seeds. You crack to shell off yourself and the small nut takes good. You can get a big bag from any Chinese grocery store with various flavors (strong to very mild or just plain) for on average AU$1.75. Cheap and affective. Its compulsive when you start you cant stop. Well i can-t stop anyway =P hope that helps. Good luck to you both.
