How can I quit smoking when I live with a smoker? -

Even though he smokes outside and I can smell it on his clothes and breath. Then reason i do it bcuz it relives a little stress. What are other methods?
----Keep Busy
----Stay Away from What Tempts You
----Managing Cravings: When you really crave a cigarette
Remember: The urge to smoke will come and go. Try to wait it out. Or look at the plan you made last week. You wrote down steps to take at a time like this. Try them! You can also try these tips:

?Keep other things around instead of cigarettes. Try carrots, pickles, sunflower seeds, apples, celery, raisins, or sugarfree gum.

?Wash your hands or the dishes when you want a cigarette very badly. Or take a shower.

?Learn to relax quickly by taking deep breaths.
?Take 10 slow, deep breaths and hold the last one.
?Then breathe out slowly.
?Relax all of your muscles.
?Picture a soothing, pleasant scene.
?Just get away from it all for a moment.
?Think only about that peaceful image and nothing else.
?Light incense or a candle instead of a cigarette.

?Where you are and what is going on can make you crave a cigarette. A change of scene can really help. Go outside, or go to a different room. You can also try changing what you are doing.

?No matter what, don-t think, -Just one won-t hurt.- It will hurt. It will undo your work so far.

there is alot of help for you on ....... www.smokefree.gov....... ^_^ good luck
It is hard to quit with another smoker near by. I haven-t had a smoke since Monday. If I lived with a smoker, that wouldn-t have been possible. It takes a lot of willpower to not go buy a pack a smokes but much more to resist when you live with someone who can quickly give you a fix. I am a pack a day smoker and I have done this before and it lasted for years before I went back. If you stop, it will be hard to even kiss your man because after a few days( weeks) of not smoking, the smell on him will gross you out. I would try to get him to stop also but don-t do it cold turkey. Its too hard. Both of you can still enjoy smoking together but cut it back a little every day until your down to maybe 4 or 5 for the day, then both stop at the same time.
Mandy,

I-ve to say that your situation hmm is a little bit tough because during the first 2 weeks of quitting you need to stay away from anything related to cigarettes. You are still weak during these first 2 weeks and still tempted to smoke - nicotine dependency is still there.

However, still if you really want to quit smoking, there are 2 ways for you in this situation :
1) Condition your mind for 30 days that smoking is bad and stop smoking is good. List down all the bad things about smoking (you can make up some bad points as well) and read them everyday for 30 days when you just wake up from sleep. Soon your brain starts to believe that smoking is bad and it-s going to be easy for you the moment you quit on 31st day. I-m serious here, this is not a mumbo jumbo but conditioning of your mind (kinda brainwash if you want to look at different angle)

2) If you don-t want to do the first method, you have to move out. You need to stay away from her/him but of course you have to tell him in a nice way. This doesn-t mean you have to end your friendship. Tell him/her that you need him/her to understand your situation. If she/he really cares about you, she/he can accept that.

May be you can think of other options? How about you persuade him/her to stop smoking together with you ? How about him/her being your stop-smoking buddy ? :)
Hi Mandy

yep that-s a toughie.. but it is doable, a number of people in my support group live with practicing smokers.. in time some come around and actually quit, but don-t hold your breathe..you are not alone..

most of my friends simply made up their mind they wanted to quit regardless of their roommates, or spouses, and did that, his willingness to smoke outside is a biggie..

you say that smoking relieves a little stress, actually smoking nearly postpones stress, and you light up again later.. support group people have a bunch of ways to deal with that stress, actually we call them
cravings..

1 Distract.. (do something else) for instance you cant wash dishes and smoke at the same time..

2 Delay (i don-t need one now) a series of delays is real time and a quit

3 Discuss.. we call each other on phone or im the internet..

4 Deep breathe.. most smokers only breathe deeply when they take a drag.

5 Drink water..that-s right drinking water cures cravings as well as flushes toxins from the body..

you may have guessed by now ,that im a member of a support group.. i have been clean from tobacco for over 5 years now.. i attend Nicotine Anonymous meetings, both locally, and on line.. on line voice meetings are as close as your computer, and your welcome to attend meetings before actually attempting a quit..

however you decide to proceed god luck!! there simply is no wrong way to quit!!

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.
I feel for you. Quitting is hard enough without someone else smoking in the house. I-ve tried various times to give up in the past and failed again and again. I find advice such as eating carrots, celery and gum useless as ultimately what my body is yearning for is to smoke a cigarette not eat vegetables. And anyway there is only so many carrots you can eat at the end of the day.
My wife smokes. She seems to give up easily whenever i try quitting and then when I re-start, she eventually starts again which makes me feel terrible.
This is a process that has happened a few times. Then eventually my wife bought a smoking alternative ie. an electronic cigarette. She begun smoking that and asked me to give it a go at least when I was at home. I did and although i have smoked the odd cigarettes now and again (not at home) I always revert to the e cig. It helps me because ultimately I enjoy the social side of smoking which makes it difficult for me to quit permanently. Its acts as my safety net.
At the end of the day though you still need a certain amount of will power - even with an electronic cigarette. Its just made a lot easier for me not having to deal with both the cravings and what to do instead of smoking while having a cup of coffee, out socialising or after a meal etc.

Good luck. Remember to take it a day at a time.
it-s called willpower. some have it, some don-t.

A cigarette is a product manufactured from cured and cut tobacco leaves, which are rolled and/or stuffed into a paper-wrapped cylinder. A cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals, over 60 of which increase the risk of cancer and other diseases in humans and animals.

The health effects of tobacco smoking are related to direct tobacco smoking, as well as passive smoking, inhalation of environmental or secondhand tobacco smoke. A 50 year study of over thirty thousand British physicians showed that nonsmokers lived about 10 more years than the smokers. For those born between 1920 and 1929 the standardized mortality rate between the ages of 35 and 69 for nonsmokers was 15% and for smokers was 43% -- nearly three times greater.Claims that personalities of smokers account for these differences are not convincing in light of the fact that the heavy smokers were about 25 times more likely to die of lung cancer or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease than the nonsmokers.

Lung cancer rates are linked to the number of people who smoke. It is noted that an increase in deaths from lung cancer appeared 20 years after an increase in cigarette consumption. The damage a continuing smoker does to their lungs can take up to 20 years before its physical manifestation in lung cancer. Women began smoking later than men, so the rise in death rate amongst women did not appear until later. More men than women smoke. More men than women die of lung cancer. The male lung cancer death rate decreased in 1975 — roughly 20 years after the fall in cigarette consumption in men. Fall in consumption in women also began in 1975 but by 1991 had not manifested in a decrease in lung cancer related mortalities amongst women.

A person-s increased risk of contracting disease is directly proportional to the length of time that a person continues to smoke as well as the amount smoked. However, if someone stops smoking, then these chances gradually decrease as the damage to their body is repaired. A year after quitting, the risk of contracting disease is half that of a smoker.

Passive or involuntary smoking occurs when the exhaled and ambient smoke (otherwise known as environmental or secondhand smoke) from one person-s cigarette is inhaled by other people. Passive smoking involves inhaling carcinogens, as well as other toxic components, that are present in secondhand tobacco smoke. Carcinogens that occur in secondhand tobacco smoke include benzene, 1,3-butadiene, benzo[a]pyrene, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-bu… and many others.

It is confirmed that, in adults, secondhand smoke causes lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, breast cancer in younger women, heart disease, heart attacks, and asthma induction. Secondhand smoke is also known to harm children, infants and reproductive health through acute lower respiratory tract illness, asthma induction and exacerbation, chronic respiratory symptoms, middle ear infection, lower birth weight babies, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In a study released February 12, 2007 warning signs for cardiovascular disease are higher in people exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke, adding to the link between -passive smoke- and heart disease.

Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a stimulant. Nicotine acts as an agonist, that attaches to nicotinic acetylcholine receptor sites in the brain. Some of these receptors regulate respiration, heart rate, memory, alertness, and muscle movement, therefore these bodily functions are affected by smoking. Normally, the naturally occurring neurochemical acetylcholine would attach to the receptors, however nicotine interferes in this process by attaching to the receptors and stimulating them in a manner which is not controlled by normal physiologic feedback processes.

Nicotine-s effect in the body results in a feedback inhibition of acetylcholine production in the brain — a physiological response to a perceived -excess- of acetylcholine, an assumption by the body which is incorrect. This replacement of natural neurochemicals with nicotine is largely responsible for nicotine-s addictive properties, because it creates a dependency for nicotine to continue fulfilling the role of acetylcholine and stop the body from becoming erratic. If a smoker stops smoking, lack of acetylcholine causes respiration, heart rate, memory, alertness, and muscle movement to be temporarily affected — this can be so distressing it can be hard to continue cessation for some.

Recent evidence has shown that smoking tobacco causes increases in dopamine levels in the brain, and lowers the levels of enzymes found in the brain that naturally stop the levels of dopamine becoming too high, this causes the promotion of abnormally high levels of dopamine similar to those experienced by heroin and cocaine addicts and users. Smokers have feelings of pleasure and reward when they smoke due to this chemical imbalance created. One study found that smokers exhibit better reaction-time and memory performance as they tire, compared to non-smokers.

It can be difficult to quit smoking due to the withdrawal symptoms which include insomnia, irritability, anxiety, decreased heart rate, weight gain, and nicotine cravings. The relapse rate for quitters is high: about 60% relapse in three months. Also, nicotine users are sometimes reluctant to quit smoking because they do not see any short-term damages it may cause.

Data from multiple studies suggest that depression plays a role in cigarette smoking A history of regular smoking was observed more frequently among individuals who had experienced a major depressive disorder at some time in their lives than among individuals who had never experienced major depression or among individuals with no psychiatric diagnosis. Another study found that the average lifetime daily cigarette consumption was strongly related to lifetime prevalence, and to prospectively assessed one year prevalence of major depression. People with major depression are also much less likely to quit due to the increased risk of experiencing mild to severe states of depression, including a major depressive episode.Depressed smokers appear to experience more withdrawal symptoms on quitting, are less likely to be successful at quitting, and are more likely to relapse. The neurotransmitter systems affected by cigarette smoke mirror the neurotransmitter pathways that are thought to be involved in the biological mechanisms of depression, and the use of antidepressants as adjuvants to smoking-cessation treatment can enhance cessation success rates.

Children 12 to 17 years old who smoke are nineteen times more likely to use cocaine. Younger children are when they use these gateway drugs and the more often they use them, the more likely they are to use cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens and other illicit drugs.

Children of smoking parents are more likely to smoke than children with non-smoking parents.

Many of tobacco-s health effects can be minimised through smoking cessation. A British doctors study showed that those who stopped smoking before they reached 30 years of age lived almost as long as those who never smoked. It is also possible to reduce the risks by reducing the frequency of smoking and by proper diet and exercise. Some research has indicated that some of the damage caused by smoking tobacco can be moderated with the use of antioxidants.
I cant go into all the technical stuf for it but i quit after 22 years and im at 4 months now, listen tell him it is all woth it i have asthma and i have not had an attack scence i quit, food taste better and my scence of smell is better and i feel better just in genral. no it will be hell for him i was like 2 weeks of not being able to sleep and anxiaty attacks. but it was all woth the hell to feel this much better
within 48 hours some of the symptoms begin to clear, others take years but yes your lungs do repair themselves, my man had lung cancer and so much dammage, after surgery he started on the no smoking patch and his coughing went away, and all the runny nose and such, and the doctor said there were no more signs of emphasemia after just a year. his lung has streached and now has the normal capacity of a full lung even though they cut off about 1/3 of it. he doesnt struggle for breath any more and has lots more energy.

Any easy ways to quit smoking? -

im 18. i have everything i want. ive got a sexy bf, im sexy lol, i have blonde hair i have big boobs (bra sixe d). But. i smoke cigarettes. i just cant quit! its hard HELP!!!
there is no easy way. i finally quit because i got 3 throat infections in 3 months and i was alway sick. i made new friends because all of my other friends smoked. 4 months later i hang out with them again because i can say no to a cigarette. it takes a lot of willpower. you need a support system. throw out all your cigarettes, chew gum and suck on hard candy. ask your bf and friends to be your support system and try to stay places where you arent allowed to smoke..

good luck :)
Stop buying smokes or have someone you live with give you only one per day, and only smoke once a day to begin with until eventually you wont want to smoke, so choose your most stressful part of the day to smoke your cigarette. or think about all the useful things you could be buying with all that money you-ve been throwing away. instead of buying smokes just put those five dollars you spend on them into a savings goal for a vacation or something that needs to be paid off...
to start with buy one single cigarette a day after a month break the cigarette into half and smoke it once every 2 days and after a while don-t put your mind on cigarettes think about the amount of money you are wasting buying a pack of cigarettes u can take that same money and be buying a pair of shoes lol
Go to your doctor and ask for that pill that helps you quit. That way, you won-t gain weight, and it really does work.
think about the bad results of smoking all the time , willpower is the best medison in the human life. thanks.

Any tips to quit smoking? -

Any tips to quit smoking? -

i-ve tried to quit smoking quite a few times, but each time i break down and have a cigarette. i-m afraid that i-ll put on a bunch of weight. anyone got any good tips to help me through this?
Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves, as you have already observed.
Congratulations on completing the first week - you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It-s just so easy to start thinking that just one won-t hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don-t have just one.
Here-s a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It-s not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as -my body needs something-, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these -my body needs something- sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the -want something- feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we-ve had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
I successfully quit smoking using a drug prescribed called Zyban, it help reduces the urge to smoke. I have been a non-smoker now coming up on 5 years next month.
Have a lot of small healthy snacks including, watermelon, carrot sticks, celery, cucumber. Suck on sugar free lollies.
Each time you find yourself craving a smoke, change what your doing immediately!! By doing that your breaking the thought process.
Good Luck.
I have a friend who smoked for over twenty years. He now takes Welbutrine (not sure how to spell it), he says he hasn-t wanted a smoke in eight weeks. However, it-s not working as good for his wife.. she-s having to take a stronger dose for the same results
first of all well done you have asked for help that is the first step... OK I-m a stop smoking adviser in a chemist and i hope these tips help..
OK first of all the weight you put on when you quit smoking is your natural weight see when you start smoking it speeds up your metabolism so you loose weight so when you quit as your metabolism slows down you gain the weight you lost. apparently sips of water help, chewing sugar free gum, and the best one Ive heard of is deep breathing you see when you are stressed you think smoking calms you down.. it doesn-t smoking increases your adrenaline so it is the deep breathing like you would if you were taking a puff on a cigarette inhale hold for 3 seconds then exhale. most of my customers say the nicotine patch is the best way to help however it doesn-t work for everyone but from my experience it is the best thing. i wish you the best of luck in quitting xxx
Instead of having a pack of cigarettes with you, try gum. The way I see it, if you like the flavor of gum a lot, it will help keep you away from them. I hope what I said helped! ^.^
I quit smoking 5 yrs ago cold turkey. I tried the patches several times. Patches worked good . till i ran out of the patches and no money to buy them. I finally told myself either quit or die. so i quit. the weight gain you can control that. exercise not eating as much. When you have some free time go to www.whyquit.com it is a great site and it has all your answers on quittting. i have an article in there. You see in august 11th 2001 they took out my right lung , i had lung cancer in the top lobe and middle lobe. I had already been trying to quit when i was diagnosed with cancer, and this just made me more determined to quit. i celebrated 5 yrs cancer free back in august and i pray that i stay like that. but seriously check out this site. it is very helpful. also good luck to you.
This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed.
I quit smoking 2 years ago

Get the Facts
Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating.

Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.”

The Allen Carr Method
HOW THE METHOD WORKS

Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages.

It is fear that keeps smokers hooked!

Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving.

The Method removes these fears
Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted….

TO BE FREE!

What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine?

The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch.

The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation.
It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable.

No Gimmicks!

The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment!

The Allen Carr Method is successful because:

It removes the smokers’ conflict of will.
There are no bad withdrawal pangs.
It is instantaneous and easy.
It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers.
You need not gain weight.
You will not miss smoking.

Medical Endorsements

A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health

“I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.”

Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees

“his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.”

Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital

“I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.”

Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong

“It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.”

Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research
Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London

”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.”

Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP

“I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.”

Celebrity Endorsements

-His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.”
Sir Richard Branson

“Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.”
Sir Anthony Hopkins

GOOD LUCK
nobody like a quitter. lol
Lung cancer is a long and painful way to die. See source pic below.
don-t try to just quit, try to cut back little by little. If you smoke a pack a day, then work on only 1/2 a pack a day, then only 1/3...and so on and so forth... Another tip i-ve heard also is that you can try keeping the cigarettes in a different place from your lighter or matches. that way it-s extra work to have one, say if you-re sitting down watching TV you don-t want to get up or something. And try walking or jogging every day...start little...and work your way up. maybe at 10 min for a few days, then 15 min. maybe switch a minute of work out for one cigarette??? i dunno. be creative!! good luck!
a temporary fix to curb a nicotine fit: take a cold wash cloth and rub it on your forearms - that stimulates your bloodflow apparently.

As far as long term, I know a lot of people who used to gum/patch - but they became reliant on those after a while.

Most of the people I know who quit and stayed -quit- just went cold turkey. Good luck!
Most of it is down to will power, but there are some methods that can help. Have a look at

It contains articles about smoking.

I was wondering if anyone has taken CHANTIX, a drug that is used to help you quit smoking.? -

i am 25 years old and have been smoking for 12 years.

if you took it, did it work? and what were your side effects?
yeah. i-m 24 and i have been smoking a pack a day since i was 18. i haven-t smoked in three weeks now. i would say it definitely worked. i noticed it pretty quickly after beginning to take it. i remember i got mad and i went to have a cigarette and it didn-t do anything, which sucked at the time but worked out well in the long run. i think how it works is that the drug mimics the effect of nicotine in your brain and it blocks the receptors where the nicotine would generally go. that way, even when you smoke, you might as well not because you aren-t getting any of the -benefit- of the drug. then it just got to a point where i knew that it wasn-t a physical addiction anymore because nicotine gets out of your body relatively quickly. i had to make up my mind not to smoke based on the psychological/emotional attachment to the habit. actually, that wasn-t very difficult either. i didn-t miss it like i thought i would. i would HIGHLY recommend this to people who would like to quit smoking. it is expensive, but less than you-ll end up spending on cigarettes for sure. good luck!
Chantix is an excellent way to quit smoking with minimal side effects. For more Chantix information, please click the following link:

Sorry, I don-t know about Chantix, but I congratulate you on wanting to quit smoking. Quitting is very, very hard. But you gotta do it.

I smoked for a couple decades, about 1.5 packs per day. I quit seven years ago, after a couple YEARS of effort. It took me some months to gradually cut down to a couple cigs per day, which was sure better than 30 cigs per day.

You-ll be very proud of yourself when you quit. Good luck.
My mother, stepfather, fiance-s mother and stepfather, along with his grandmom have all quit smoking using CHANTIX. It is an awesome way to quit smoking. The only side effect i know about is my mom got gas, other then that nothing else was different besides the fact non of them want to smoke anymore! I recommend this to you and anyone else who wants to quit. Good Luck!
I-ve not taken it but one of my friends did and has been smoke free for 6 months. It worked great for her! She said she had no side effects.

Is It Normal to Have Tight Chest after People Quit Smoking? -

I read that some people, including myself, are experiencing tightness in chest with mucous in the throat after they quit smoking over many weeks or longer?
Yes, this is all part of the withdrawal symptoms of giving up smoking. You chest is adapting to being able to breathe more easily. The mucous in the throat is normal too, phlegm is trying to be cleared from the lungs...
I had bronchitis for a while on and off for several years after I quit and my lungs are easy to get infection now because I got asthma now but continuing smoking can cause a lot more serious than bronchitis like cause and emphysema and heart disease You may need to go to the doctor and talk to him you may need a asthma inhaler for a while until the tightness goes away
im guessing it might be your body adapting to breathing without the smoking

we want to be sure. My mom smelled that smoke smell in his work car. One of his sweaters smelled of smoke. How are we sure he-s smoking, we didn-t find any cigarettes. Are we crazy? I even said - I smell smoke on your sweater, and he said ohh...maybe it-s left over from when i smoked. only thing is he got that sweater last year from my grandmother. i walked out of the room and spyed on him. He started smelling his sweater. Is he smoking again?
have your mom kiss his hand romantically, stinky fingers are a sure fire giveaway.
he is.
just ask ,if he says no,and he is lying youll know .its a very hard thing to let go of,ive tried to quit lots of times!!!
Smoke in the clothes and car is a clue, but not evidience--he might just be overly accomodating to a smoking coworker or friend. When I used to bowl, I-d always smell like smoke when I came home.

The biggest clue for whether he is doing it himself would be his breath (your mom will have to check that) --does it smell like smoke or something to cover smoke that he usually doesn-t do, like gum or mints? The second is to smell his hand--most people forget to wash their hands after smoking, and that is a much better telltale than the clothes--clothes soak up the smoke, your hands will only reek if you were holding a cigarette.
well it could be he was near people who smoke. you cannot be sure if it is him who was smoking. i quit smoking a little less than 6 months ago, and the sure way to know that someone smokes or not is from their breath. it stinks. so stand close to your dad when talking to him and im sure you-d smell the difference if he were smoking again.
I would have to agree, have your mom smell his hand. The hand is the hardest place to get smoke smell off of no matter how much you wash your hands.

I quit smoking one month now...and concerned about my ice cream? -

I eat frozen capuchinos almost everyday or 5 times a week. I do however exercise ALOT Usually everyday for 1 hour and myabe more on the weekends. I am concerned will the ice cream catch up with me? Its just that I dotn mind eating the ice cream cos I am not smoking.
ice cream has allot of cholesterol in it i would be careful.
Get the reduced sugar and fat kind, its weird, but it tastes just the same. Iddys makes a great reduced ice cream, and in a ton of flavors without the calories and sugar. it taste great, try it. they have it at wal-mart, and places like that.

How do i quit coughing since Ive quit smoking? -

i quit smoking 4 months ago and i just started coughing yesterday its so bad i can barley breath it hurts and tastes gross my chest feels heavy and well im miserably i cant sleep because of it please give me some advice on how to quit smoking i cant stifly the coughs and i have a very professional job thanks for the support-mandi
Wish I knew- but congratulations and please whatever you do STICK WITH IT!
I just quit for the umpteenth time, too...
but for new love, I might just refrain from ashtray mouth, you know?
It could be any reason in the world, but stick with it!
Picture your lungs cleaning themselves, because that-s what they-re doing. Picture healing, not suffering. You-ll be fine!
Hi !!!!

Congratulations!!!!

But my advise to you is make an appointment with your doctor, and ask him for a referral to a lung doctor. If you were smoking for X amount of time, is better to have your lungs checked by a specialist.

Don-t take any chances!!!! what ever you do, at this time will have an impact later!!!

GOD BLESS, HAVE A HAPPY LIFE

ALLIV Z
I know someone who couldn-t stop coughing and it was lung cancer. See your physician pronto.
If you quit 4 months ago and just now started coughing, then it-s probably just a cough or cold. Use some throat lozenges and go to the doctor when you get a chance.

However, you later say that you need advice on quitting smoking. Have you quit or not?
I don-t understand your question. You say you quit smoking 4 months ago but want advice on how to quit? If indeed you quit 4 months ago, the cough is not from that. You may have a cold. If it doesn-t let up, see your doctor.

How to quit smoking easily...? -

I-ve had a cold for about a week now and have only smoked 3 cigs. I really don-t even want one anymore but as soon as i get better i know its all im gonna want. especially at work. Any tips????
I am going on month 3 of not smoking right now. I stopped cold turkey because I said in my head that I am done and do not want to buy anymore smokes. I f you really want to quit then I think cold turkey will work for you. If you are not ready then no matter what you do you are going to buy that next pack. If your ready to stop then pick a final date when you will not buy any more cigarettes and you wont smoke anymore. Just be done and if you have a craving then go over in your head why you do not want to smoke anymore and talk yourself out of that craving. I was a smoker for 20 years. You can do it!
It all comes down to be mentally resistant to your smoking desires. You have created a habit by smoking now you must create a habit of -not- smoking. I did it 30 years ago after 20 years of smoking. It was difficult but I mentally trained myself to hate smoking. Now I hate to be around smokers who care less about others. Besides you will be giving your body back the health that God intended. Your body is His temple and we should not damage or destroy it. Smoking destroys.

-Living -wrongly-, no doctor can cure you-, but
-Living -rightly-, no doctor will be required-.
I had a co-worker who smoked a pack a day. Her husband decided he wanted to quit and made an appointment to get laser acupuncture. What my co-worker didn-t know was he had made an appointment for her even though she didn-t want to quit. She went just to humor him. They left the dr-s office, went out to eat and went home. The next day they realized that they didn-t want a smoke. That was two years ago and neither have had a desired to smoke since.

It doesn-t always work, but it-s something to consider and look into if it-s offered in your area.
One of the ways you could try is cold-turkey.

Another method is a gradual reduction program.

Yet another method is to use patches, gums, and voodoo.

In all seriousness, what helped me was a 12 step program. There are many programs tailored to deal with many things we can become addicted to. My addiction has been on hold for a little over 4 years, and if this knucklehead can do it - ANYONE can.

Just do a web search for 12 step programs and see what that provides you with. All 12 step programs are free and have helped millions of people live clean lives.
---Take it Step by Step-Make a Desicion---

I-ve never smoked , drank or done anything like that but I do know that quiting anything (whether its cussing, smoking, drinking, fornication)is a day by day procces a commitment one day, one hour, one minuete , one moment, and on second at a time to quite and do the right thing. Ask GOD to hedecisionnd deliver you. Above all make a desicion. You-ve got to decide -I ain-t gonna do it no more.- Don-t but yourself in a position to fail. Also get a new hobby- Chew gum, buy a hand held game, run for fun, play basketball, go to the gym.

Lastly or should I say primarJESUS ask GOD. Trust GOD. Believe in HIM. JESUS saved me. I was a wrench undone. I don-t even want to talk about the mess that I have done, but I know it was HIM who saved me a set me freVICTORYn-t have to sin because I have the vitcory. Ask GOD to save you . HE surley saved me
Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

1 Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Just have faith. You can do it. Be happy . Get excited. Your quitting smoking! That-s great! Believe and you will. -For with GOD nothing is impossible!-Mark 10:27
And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Tell other just like I am telling you about how GOD healed me and saved me. My step mom used to smoke .Revelation 12:11
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Now she is doesn-t even think about it. Take it step by step with JESUS daily

In the love of Christ, be blessed, You can do it, With CHRIST you can make it,

Can I quit smoking permanently? -

I think I have what is known as an oral fixation with smoking. I know it-s horrible for me, but yet I continue depsite my husband-s discouragement. I-m a reasonably intelligent individual, although I think I may be addicted not only psychologically, but now chemically!
the best way to answer is perhaps to know the limits
of being bored and then compensate..

for instince i still have issues with being bored and injoying
such moments that i should not take for granted..

good question..

mdg
i know what you mean. i have stopped smoking after to many years, have now quit for over 2 years now, but my mouth still hungers after a ciggie, not my body - just my mouth. i never thought i could quit as i don-t cope very well not having a fix, i stuck to it with zyban. now i don-t smoke. the great thing about that is the savings. we go out, buy and travel so much more now that i don-t puff all that money away. try and stay positive when quitting. but also remember you must want to give it up for yourself, not for others as it really doesn-t work.
it-s hard but it-s possible. if my dad stopped smoking after years of smoking, you can if you are really determined too.....
It is very hard to quit that nasty stuff but it is still possible. cigs are more addictive than crack(seriously). I have never known anyone to quit for good but I still think it is possible.
you have to quit smoking as soon as possible. it is dangerous especially for a married woman. after pregnancy it leads to abnormal foetal development. meditation can be done to calm your mind. regular excercise can increase your vital capacity of ur lungs. it leads to bad breath , so it can lead to ur turn off . it is also problematic for ur husband to tolerate. get rid of it gradually by practising every day and resolve not to smoke.
nicotine is the hardest habit to break. go to a support group if you can find one, for psychological help and try to replace your oral fixation with something healthier. thats why nicorete gum works so well. good luck.
i know 2 people that quit after hypnotism, one seven years now and the other three years. i-m going to try it.
anyone can quit. It takes alot of determination though. You could use a patch or candy to help
You can do one of two things.

1 - Smoke the very smallest bit of pot with your tabaco (this is knows to reduce the chances of cancer by 3 times)

2 - The main thing that smokers face when they are going to quit smoking is the fact that they feel that they are loosing something by quiting smoking. The withdrawal symptoms are actually all in your head. you bring them upon yourself.

ALSO - IF you smoke a lot on your own remember why you began to smoke. -Because it was cool-... now smoking on your own, is that cool? There for if your going to smoke smoke while your with people so you can be -cool- and only smoke a little bit at a time and hold it in for longer. that way you dont end up finishing 4 packs in 10 min (it will also feel just as good)

Is it easy to quit smoking? -

I have to do a report for my health class. i need 5 journal entries on people who have tried to quit smoking. the reason im asking is because i don-t know anyone who smokes. So please help. =D
It is fairly easy if the person really wants to quit. Check out whyquit.com and google for Allen Carr-s Easyway (he had released a couple free books as well as paid ones).

Personally I could only manage to quit thanks to both Allen Carr and Joel Spitzer, who are recognized to be experts at smoking cessation (Allen Carr died two years ago though).
There is no way a person can quit unless that person is sick and tired of smoking and wants to quit.....if that person doesn-t want to quit, it won-t happen...
I smoke and have quit before... and will quit one last time....
It is not really easy to quite smoking but it is possible to quite smoking. It is a gradual process,i smoked for 24 years and finally stopped.I started by smoking clove cigarettes (djarum blacks) for some weeks, then I tried the patch and finally,I read an ebook which gave me additional inspiration to stop smoking.

I have periodontal disease. Yesterday I had the deepcleaning. I quit smoking last week. Is 1 cig be horrible? -

I have periodontal gum disease and just found out last week, when I suddenly had excruciating pain. I quit smoking as soon as I found out. Yesterday I got the treatment, which was the deep cleaning. I feel alot better. I-m taking antibiotics 3 times daily. I REALLY want just ONE cigarette. Would one cigarette make me get back to the state I was at last week?
Periodontal Disease is a chronic disease that is the result of long term oral health neglect. The condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw bone levels will only continue to get worse unless you make some serious long term lifestyle changes. If not the result will eventually be the complete loss of your teeth. Depending on what stage the disease is at, you can hope to stop or at least slow down the progression. The only way to do this is to change your oral hygiene habits in an extreme way. You must begin brushing (especially at the gumline) 2-3x a day for at least 2 minutes at a time. You need to be flossing once a day and seeing your dentist (preferably a Periodontist) every three months. Just as importantly, you need to quit smoking! Smoking speeds up the progression of periodontal disease (not to mention all of the other health problems it causes). Do whatever you can to quit. Oral health is much more important than most people realize and i hope that you take this as serious as it is. Good luck!
One: OK. Two: tut-tut. Three: total blow-out.
Sure. Smoking is bad for the teeth and mouth. I have been there and regret it. The earlier you quit, the better you will be.
Whoa, don-t do it! Just one will erase all your progress, it will retrigger the addiction and you-ll smoke and smoke until you-re right back where you were.
I-ve tried just about every method there is out there and there is only one I can recommend - NLP! It eliminates the cravings.
Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.

How difficult is it to quit smoking after a month? -

I sort of unconsciously picked up smoking during a stressful point in my life, and I realize now that it-s stupid and I-ve gotten rid of my cigarettes and I-m starting tomorrow to quit. During this past month I-ve smoked somewhere between 5 and 7 cigarettes a day. I have never felt addicted, necessarily, but I know I could be once I stop. I-m just wondering how hard it-s going to be, and how long the crappy feelings are going to last. Basically, I need some motivation and reassurance.
motivation:
your health, your looks, your smell, social exclusion

reassurance:
The longer you wait, the tougher it will be. If you-re apprehensive now, it-ll only be worse later.

Good Luck!
well it took me about a month to become addicted to cigarettes so it could be hard. Now I smoke cigars because i-m not addicted to the nicotine, i just need the oral fixation and I don-t like chewing gum. Try chewing gum. If you are addicted don-t go cold turkey but try to take it down a notch every few days.
Don-t kid yourself. Smoking is awesome. We do it (or did it) for a reason. Read Allen Carr-s the Easy Way to Quit smoking. He had a great point of view that spoke to me while I was quitting. I was kind of sick to death of non-smokers blasting the whole -smell better, save money, good for health- bs that I already knew. His book played down those reasons and made it way more personal. Good luck - it-s not as hard as doctors will have you believe!
well when i quit smoking i use a simple method and that is if the cravings are strong try to substitute it with something sweet that helped me a lot.
Top 10 Tips
1. Start with some pre-preparation by ensuring that you really do want to quit smoking and understanding why you smoke. Are these reasons powerful enough to motivate you when you are faced with those tricky situations? Write down your reasons for quitting. You may want to take a look at some of the benefits of quitting.

2. Set yourself a date for quitting. Try and choose a date that will be stress free but when you can find plenty to do to keep yourself busy. Try and set a date within about two weeks of reading this.

3. Ask your doctor for advice. This is especially important if you have health problems or are concerned about issues such as weight gain.

4. Consider finding yourself a quitting partner relatives, work colleagues and friends are a good place to start. Set a date to quit together and you will be able to give each other support.

5. Tell your family and friends about your intentions. Ask them for their support before you quit and explain that you may not be yourself while experiencing withdrawal. When you reach your quitting date rely on those that have been most encouraging for support.

6. Think about starting an exercise program and a sensible eating plan. Again speak to your doctor or dietician. Exercise will give you more energy and help you to relax and relieve stress.

7. You should know what triggers your desire for a cigarette, such as stress, the end of a meal, drinking in a bar, etc. Avoid these triggers while you are trying to quit or if that-s not possible, decide how you will deal with the triggers.

8. Decide what you will do when you experience cravings. As we-ve discussed deep breathing, a short walk and keeping you self busy will help to take your mind off the cravings. Perhaps you can think of other ways. Write them down. Remember these cravings will only last for 3-5 minutes at a time.

9. If you have tried quitting before maybe you came across a stumbling block which we have discussed such as finding something to do with your hands. If so, you need to arm yourself with a solution to these foreseeable problems. Get yourself a pen, or stress relief aid to fiddle with, if occupying your hands is a problem.

10. Be positive and confident you can quit. You have spent time and energy planning how you will deal with the task ahead. You can and will do it if you persevere. Ten of thousands of people are quitting every day around the world. You can be one of them.
Nicotine is one of the most addictive, harmful and widely available drugs in the world. Smoking is a bad habit and it is annoying and harmful to people who don-t smoke. Cigarettes are responsible for around 500,000 deaths each year.
Quitting smoking is not impossible

How to Quit Smoking

1. Get the strong determination to stop smoking. Consider making a list of the reasons you are thinking about quitting to shore up your determination. Specific, current, emotion-based reasons are better than factual, future-based reasons. For instance, -It-s embarrassing to ride the elevator at work smelling like a giant cigarette- is more motivating than -I don-t want to get cancer when I’m 60.-

2. Choose a specific quit date. Instead of trying to quit each year on your birthday or for your New Year-s Resolution, try quitting on a Monday! That gives you 52 chances in a year instead of just one -– making it more likely that you’ll succeed. The Healthy Monday Campaign, a non-profit national public health campaign associated with the Columbia University-s Mailman School of Public Health, encourages people to quit smoking and take other healthy actions on Mondays.

3. Between your decision to quit smoking and your -quit date-, do not smoke the same brand. The difference in flavors and chemicals will making smoking less enjoyable, but not intolerable. Switching brands also helps to ‘de-automate’ smoking, which can help you become more conscious of your habit and increase your chances for success.

4. Remove all tobacco products, like lighters and matches from your home and office. Also, don-t even keep a pack of cigarettes at your home, because it will make it easier to start smoking again.

5. Find a medication or a doctor to help you quit smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy is one option. Nicotine patches release a steady stream of nicotine into your bloodstream through your skin, and nicotine gum delivers nicotine through the lining in your mouth. Other forms of nicotine replacement therapy include nicotine sprays and inhalers that also work by delivering nicotine to your body. You may also want to try an e-cigarette, which delivers nicotine in vapor form. Alternatively, ask your doctor about prescription medications to help you quit.

6. Survive the first week. Use a cigarette substitute like mints, sunflower seeds, toothpicks, and coffee stirrers to help you get used to not smoking. When you were smoking, your mind and body became accustomed to the physical act of smoking, holding the cigarette in your hand, and putting it to your lips; using harmless substitutes eases the psychological transition to not smoking.

7. Get some facts. Look up smoking on the internet and find out the history behind it, and what happens to smokers later on in life. Also, get the facts about any quit-smoking product or technique you are considering, as research shows that some are more effective than others

How long does it take for my lungs to heal after i quit smoking? -

How long does it take for my lungs to heal after i quit smoking? -

i havent been smoking for a long time(maybe a year or so) and i dont smoke that much, maybe 1-3 cigarettes a day, how long would it take for my lungs to completely heal?
If you quit smoking by the time you are 30, within 10 years, you lungs will have healed themselves so it was like you never smoked. If you wait longer, they will heal some but not all the way. This info applies to pack a day smokers, so you are probably okay.
Regardless of how much you smoke, you should stop. The fact that you only smoke 1-3 cigarettes a day is much better than a pack, but you need to stop.

Your risk for cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and stroke are greatly multiplied the longer you smoke. When you STOP, you will reduce your risk for pneumonia, bronchitis, infections and other various cancers

Your lungs will heal if you STOP. Since you-ve only smoked a year and it has been minimal, it won-t take that long to heal as opposed to smokers that have greater -pack-years- than you (Packs per day times years smoked). But you-ll notice better lung function and less coughing as that happens.

Please stop!
they never will
they will not deteriorate any further

Trying to quit smoking - on 2 days...how do I keep this up? -

It-s been two days since I smoked last and my friends say that after the third day it-s all downhill. I-m cranky and mean and all I want is a cigarette. I really want to do this- I promised myself and others. What can I do to keep this up and not be so irritable?
You are doing well, 2 days is huge. Most people take 7-10 quit attempts to fully quit smoking...so don-t get discouraged.
Lifestyle modification:
1) get rid of cigarettes
2) avoid things that may make you want to smoke (i.e. if coffee does then replace coffee with tea)
3) when you realy feel the urge to smoke, rinse with mouthwash...this will make you want to smoke less because of the clean feeling in your mouth.
4) wash your bedsheets, your car interior, anything that can keep the smoke smell
5) If your friends are going to smoke, tell them it shouldn-t be around you

Drug therapy: Some people don-t want to...but I highly recommend it.
you are twice as likely to quit smoking by using the patch or nicotine gum!
talk to a pharmacist about quitting and use of one of these...they will advise you on what strength to use and give you more advice.
Head down to the pharmacy and buy a little pack of the nicotine gum. This was the only way for me. The stuff is pricey, and not too pleasant at first, but follow the directions, and have at it. It can really help with the cravings.

If the big pack costs to much, ask at the counter, they usually have small packs (10 pieces) back there. They keep em hidden, i guess, to stop shoplifters...

I originally thought switching to snuff (chewing tobacco) would be a good way to quit. Figured it was so nasty, no way I would stick with it. But I ended up addicted to the can. The gum was the only way for me.
wow two days is a big deal..congrats!!! ask anybody who has tried!!

yep being cranky, and mean.. sounds like real withdrawal.. i have a friend in my support group, who-s fond of saying - your allowed 3 homicides in your first 30 days-..the good news is that this passes.. actually most folks who have quit have found that the world is a pretty forgiving place.. many of us laugh about those situations now.. good luck my friend!!

should mention too.. that yes i attend a support group.. i attend Nicotine Anonymous meetings both locally, and on line.. on line meetings are as close as your computer, and your welcome to attend while still planning a quit, or already quit!! these meetings could answer a lot of these kind of questions..

Get a prescription for Nicotrol (it-s a nicotine inhaler with replacable cartridges) or Chantix (a nicotine receptor antagonist, it will make cigarettes taste terrible). If you don-t want to go the medical route, drink coffee and chew gum. Have something in your mouth at all times.
stop buying packs. you could do it! i stopped for two weeks because i didn-t buy a pack. i know i could stop forever, i just don-t want to

Due to the unpleasantness of the withdrawal symptoms, many people who try to quit smoking end up replacing the cigarettes with some other type of addiction. This may be an addiction to prescription medication, such as sleeping tablets or tranquilizers, or an addiction to food. While you will definitely experience the health benefits of giving up nicotine, no one wants to replace one addiction with another!

A healthy diet, adequate exercise as well as natural and holistic treatments such as acupuncture, massage and herbal and homeopathic remedies can also help the smoker overcome nicotine addiction. Herbal and homeopathic treatments are a safe and effective means to reduce nicotine cravings (without giving you more nicotine) and will also help to prevent weight gain and alleviate anxiety and irritability. Basically, natural and holistic treatments not only lessen the urge to smoke, but also help you to restore balance in your body.

There are a number of ingredients such as Avena sativa, Garcinia cambogia and Gotu Cola (Centella asiatica) which will help to address the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. They reduce nicotine cravings and balance the mood.

More details on these are available here

along with dietary recommendations as well.
i have heard that nicotine-s can be as strong as addiction on heroin.
i believe that.

the trouble is, that smoking is not only about nicotine. it is a complex problem, which involves hands movement habit, social life, friends, smell of smoke and deep breaths in to get it deep into your lungs, and many more...

to battle this you can try yoga to control your thoughts, emotions, breathing...

you can start to chew nicorette (for example) and slowly cut the doses to an absolute nil.
it may take months and it will need your discipline, but at the end it will be healthy and free YOU.

Gum patches and all the other just did not cut it for me, not to mention cold turkey which was the hardest, I even tried the electric cig and it is just no match to the real thing.
Check out this article:

it’s the one that got me off the cigs and smoke free for GOOD even without gaining weight! :)

Good luck kicking the habit!

I think you should satisfy your nicotine urge. You gain nothing by stressing yourself out. Don-t feel guilty that you allowed yourself some nicotine. But you should prepare a plan to slowly free yourself from your nicotine addiction. This site might help you:

What is the BEST way to QUIT smoking...without gums and meds? My husband nees help now! Thanks!? -

stop smoking techniques
i know you dont want meds
but this herbel medicine helped my daddy alot!
im not sure whats its called but when i find out ill put it up here.
also it helped my grandpa to be hypmotised
i know it sounds funny but he never smoked a cig. after that
i never believed it could work but it did
i hoped i helped!!
I used nicotine patches for about 6-7 weeks, and have been -clean- for about 8-1/2 years.

Sometimes hard candy or gum drops will help. He needs to try different stuff like that to find whatever will take his mind off the cigarettes. Good Luck.
Without meds...I would suggest meds and a support group.
You are dealing with a severe physical and psychological addiction.
ive heard sucking on hard candy help(usually suckers) becasue it help with the hand-mouth habit like a cigerrete. hope that helps!!!

How do i quit smoking? i ve been trying since very long but ? -

its been 5 long years i ve been smoking but now my man does not want me to ... he gave me lot of time to quit .... i ve been hiding it ffrom him tht dont smoke now... but in my heart i know i m cheating him as he trusts me... but pls help me how do i quit tht
If you really want to quit ... you will ... cold turkey ... just throw them out. You say it can-t be done .... BULL ... that-s what the ad companies tell you ... you-re weak and need their product to quit. I smoked 1.5 packs per day for many years ... at one time it was 3 packs a day. I quit ... cold turkey. My story / secret : I was teaching martial arts, one day after a hard / fast workout (which I led), my students recovered their breath before me. I walked out of the temple, threw the pack in the trash ... in front of my students ... I haven-t smoked since ... it-s about willpower ... yes ... for a long time I wanted a smoke but I always remembered that moment of being winded and knew that would be a normal state IF I kept smoking. Yes ... smoking really does screw-up your lungs. I like being able to breath without an oxygen tank ... take long walks ... swim ... it-s your choice ... life or a living death ....
Smokers are having hard time just to quit smoking but what can I really suggest is to do it with your own will and with your heart and mind showing eagerness to reach your goals not because somebody requested it to you. Stopping abruptly can lead to further problems. You may experience some feelings of withdrawal but you can also manage it thoroughly. Start it with eliminating the maximum sticks you may consume a day and do it gradually.
This programme focuses on using your mind and the art of visualization to draw in universal life force energy, to not only protect yourself from disease, but to help you stop smoking. This method has been tried and tested and proven to work!!

Good Luck :)
You can try over-the counter herbal pills, nicorette, the patch, prescription pills like zyban, or cold turkey. Stop buying them and reduce yourself to bumming one when necessary. there-s also many stop-smoking sites that will help you. Good luck!
Just throw the last butt and forget that there is something called cigarettes in the world.
Try to keep yourself engaged as best as you can.
Leave the Company of smokers.
the best way is to quit cold turkey also chew on a straw or gum it helps but the best way is to find something to keep your mind off of it trust me it works
you have to either will yourself to do it or find a substitute, it-s your choice
Overdose yourself with sigarettes, the next day you-ll be so sick and disgusted you-ll never smoke again.
go online to how to quit smoking or other websites and the websites tell you how to stop.
you don-t quit for anyone but yourself. when you start worrying about your health...THEN maybe you-ll quit.

How can I help my mom quit smoking?? -

How can I help my mom quit smoking?? -

I am really scared for my mom. The doctor said she would die within 2 years if she didn-t stop. Any help?? I-m really scared and young. I haven-t gone through puberty yet!!!!
I had the same problem as you have. I was young and my mom didn-t want to quit smoking. So what I did was, I went online to google and just typed in Smoking Effects. I printed off some information, I showed it to my mom and expressed to her that I wanted her to be around when I get married and how I wanted her to be there when I go to prom and to be a grandma some day. I went through the papers I had printed off and explained things to her. I think that hearing things from me instead of her doctor really changed her perspective on her life style. So try these things and I hope things will go well with your mom.
Best of wishes!
First. Dr-s can be over-dramatic at times. They told my grandparents the same thing 20 years. They are now 87 and 83, and still smoking.
Second. She has to want to quit. Nothing anyone says or does will make her quit. She has to do it on her own. If anything it will make her smoke more because you will irritate her. You can bring it up once, but that-s it. Let her figure out the rest.
Tell her that she have children that really cares about her and if she want stop for herself. Tell her to stop for you.
when your mom takes out one just fall to the floor holding your throat saying -i cant breath-or just tell her how you feel.

I want to quit smoking cold turkey...how should i start? -

I want to quit smoking cold turkey...how should i start? -

i-ve been meaning to quit smoking for awhile but yeah...uphill battle...i need some pointers from successful people who-ve quit...
As other have said: you start by stopping.

Chew gum, go for walks, smoke a straw... find something to do (something HEALTHY! smoking weed is NOT a healthy alternative :P) instead of smoking when your craving.

Perhaps added incentive would be to take the money you would spend on cigarettes and drop it in a jar. watch it add up. kind of an incentive to yourself. when you reach a month or something, maybe splurge and buy yourself something you might not normally buy but want (new clothes, new game, a -special- dinner, etc)

perhaps wearing a rubber band around your wrist and -snapping- it against you when you get a craving might help? I-ve heard people using this for other bad habits (like nail chewing or nose picking, or scab scrapping, etc)... might be worth a try.

above all else, stick with it. If you have friends who smoke... don-t hang out with them, or ask that they don-t smoke around you. It-s important that they don-t help you backslide. in fact, it-s best if you can get a good support group of people around you.

On that note: if you-re quitting for a specific reason.. rather then just -I should- maybe you should make a list of all the reason why you ARE quitting, and how you-ll benefit.

If your house or car smells of smoke, fix it. open all your doors and windows, let the thing air out... go buy some carpet deoderizer and vacuum... get some air freshener... anything to get the smoky smell out. :)

And, as I said, stick with it. stick to your guns and don-t give an inch.
I would suggest taking up weight lifting, running, tennis, or something active to replace the cigarettes. Join a gym and go everyday, don-t skip even one day. When your body and lungs get fresh air and circulation it will make it difficult to go back to smoking. You-ll be too used to breathing good. Try keeping your mouth busy with gum first of all. Spend that money you would-ve spent on cigarettes on expensive water like Voss, Evian or Fuji. You-ll feel good, trust me. Then think about how gross you must smell and psych yourself out to actually hate that smell. Tell yourself how nasty those people are who smoke. Be a snob, you-re too good for smoking, don-t let yourself be a slave to a pack of cigarettes, you-re in control not the cigarette. Surround yourself with people who don-t smoke and are positive influences. And be hard on yourself if you mess up. Make yourself run an extra mile as punishment. Read health nut articles and books, get yourself in a -healthy person- state of mind and forget about the old you that used to smoke. Look at the habit as trashy and embarrassing, like you wouldn-t be caught dead smelling that bad or making that sucking face. I did all of this and stopped cold turkey Jan 1st of this year. You can do it.
I quit cold turkey almost 5 years ago. I found out my 9 year old had 3 valve defects...THAT was a reason to quit and I focused all my energy towards him. It was a big awakening. I do not wish for you to go through that, however, we all know smoking is bad for us, must we go through a childs sickness to wakeup?
Exercise walk try staying away from smokers and eat plenty of fruit. it worked for me. and you have-t to be ready to quit not just think about it. i threw a pack away and never smoked again. be strong
Its very simple. I know its hard, but you have to just take that pack that you have right now, and throw it in the garbage. Then, you say to yourself, i can do this, i am not smoking anymore, ive done it myself, and it takes will power, but you can do it,
I went on vacation and smoke casually. It helps when you have no money and you don-t smoke very much, maybe scale it down gardually.
Start by cutting down , put them in another room and not think about it that much, when you get a craving for one you have to go into another room and look for them. I have quit this way for over 2 months now. I started going with 2 and hour and then putting them in another room to where when I wanted one I would have to go and find where I put them. I finally got tired of stopping what I was doing to go get one and then I forgot about them. GOOD LUCK IT WILL BE HARD AT FIRST, BUT THEN IT WILL GET BETTER. Good Luck and God Bless You.
Just leave them alone and dont ever start back up. A pearson can do anything they want as long as they apply theirself at it. C
don-t buy that backup pack.
when you get to your last cig, resign yourself to that fact.
valium helps.
Rule # 1 - make the decision that you ARE going to stop smoking. Don-t think of TRYING to quit - do it, there is no try (as Yoda said).

It-s a lifestyle change, be prepared for that. Change your lifestyle in the short term to avoid the times when normally smoke (e.g. after meals). Do something with the money you save. Get fit again.

In the end, you must decide to quit - make the decision that it IS going to happen....and mean it !

Good luck.

BUT - remember you might fail 100 times....you only have to succeed once. Don-t get discouraged.

P.S. I quit a 20 a day Marlboro habit on September 9th 1990.
Get a straw (this is going to sound crazy) and when you crave a smoke, sit outside or where you usally smoke and pretend you are smoking the straw. cravings only last a few minutes so hopefully this helps, after a few days you will realise that you dont need to smoke anymore, and wont even need the straw.
Well, cold turkey means just stopping.

So just stop.

I suck at quitting smoking. But I had a thought the other day, that if you buy cigarettes you don-t like that much, everytime you have one, it won-t be that desirable. Something to ponder.
You start by stopping. There-s no secret formula despite what people tell you. You just have to want to do it. I quit a week ago and I just get angry at myself and realize how weak I am if I even think about smoking again. Workin out so far. gl
forget that outdated and horrible way. talk to your doctor about Chantix.
-Cold turkey- means you simply toss the cigarettes and never have another... the toughest way to do it since the cravings an withdrawals are intense. I think you-re looking for a good method to wean yourself from your nicotine addiction. I wish you luck... I haven-t been able to quit.
I want to quit smoking cold turkey...how should i start? -

What is the best and least expensive way to quit smoking??? -

What is the best and least expensive way to quit smoking??? -

One bullet. All smokers are just going to die a miserable, choking, cancer-ridden, painfully slow death anyway, and none of them ever really quit. They just postpone it for a month or two before starting back up again. So one lead slug to the temple should ease the pain on all of us, the health care system, gas stations, restaurants, casinos and bars, and keeps the exit lanes of freeways clean and butt-free.

Quitting means never doing it again, FYI.
I quit three years ago. I have low priced prescriptions so I tried Zyban. It really helped the cravings at first. I only took it to -get over the hump-, then did it on my own. Different things work for each person. My Dr. wanted me to try the patch, or gum. I didn-t want to put nicotine in my body. (If I was going to do that, I wanted to smoke!) There is a new med out that-s suppose to work really well - chantrix. If I didn-t have Rx coverage, I probably would have just cut down until I was having 1 cigarette a day, and then stop over the course of several months.
Throw you cigarette in the garbage and quit cold turkey. That-s how I did it.
Recognize that smoking is as bad an addiction as heroin.

Don-t be concerned with cost. Cigarettes cost $5-6 a pack so you will save money there once you quit.

Cold turkey is the cheapest way, but also the least successful.

The patch will work physically. You need to have a plan for handling the urges you will still get. I suggest a long drink of cold water and a quick walk. Divert yourself. If you get past the first 30 seconds you-ll be ok.

Don-t be ashamed to ask your doctor for a prescription for Chantix or one of the other aids available.

If you slide back, don-t think you can-t quit. Just start again.
YOU CAN DO IT!!

Good Luck
I started to do yoga on a daily basis and just ended up quitting. It has many other benefits as well!
cold turkey but if u cant do that then gum/patches
Smoking is a ***** of a habit to kick, I-m currently doing it myself...as a retort to the last idiots comments, Aholes like that need to get hurt. Anyhow, There are many ways to quit. I have had the most success just thinking about being around longer for my son and watching him grow up and have a family of his own. Smoking diseases are horrible and the whole -scare tactic- works best for me...geting informed about the long term and fatality of it is enough to keep me motivated at most times, but it is hard. When I hear idiots in the comment above me, I almost want to make sure they get some of my second hand smoke because pricks like that need a bit of death themselves...but that isnt right I guess. Good luck. It-s a long and tempting road. Stay strong.

There is a brand new prescription drug out there that is incredible. You take this pill for however long the doc tells you to and you quit cold turkey without ANY cravings. Call up your doc and ask him. It is so worth it.
Do it yourself is too tough, patches, gum and such take the edge off, but ask your doc and find what is the best they currently have out there.
Good Luck. You are going to feel great, and food will taste incredible again (that is the #1 thing people tell me is so great) and you will reduce your risk of dying from lung or mouth cancer!
Read -the easy way to quit- by Allen Carr. You don-t even have to stop until you have finished the book. It worked for me.
It is actually easy to quit once you get into the right mindset and the book helps you do that by getting rid of:
1. fear and
2. brainwashing that makes you think its hard to quit.

You can do it! If I can easily quit after 30 years of smoking, anyone can!
Hypnotizing.

where i live it costs about $50, and you never crave a cigarette again.
watch -Thank You for Smoking-
Have a packet of chewing gum with you instead of having a packet of cigarette. Believe me it works
Try doing something you like. For example if you like to fly a plane go and fly one. I know a person that stopped smoking because she liked to eat so instead of smoking, she ate a lot.
I know this may sound weird, but Bananas can help people trying to give up smoking. The B-6 and B-12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body-s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

So try eating some bananas :)

Some of the addiction is oral and normalacy... when you normally have cigarettes, that-s when you crave them... one of my friends would always have a ballpoint pen with her ... she would hold it in her hand like she would when she was a smoker... and if she had the oral craving, she would chew on the pen... sounds weird, but worked for her :)
Good Luck on finding the -Easiest- way to quit. How long have you been smoking? I have tried most everything they say is the -best- and find that nothing has worked for me, although I have been smoking for 50 years now!! Yes, 50! What a fool I have been.

My next step is to be hypnosis. Not the group one, as that is too generic. My last try was the newest thing on the market, Chantix. I hear it has been effective for a lot of people, just not me.

As I say, Good Luck to you and and much, much fortitude, as you will need it. ChaCha
Add up how much it costs for your addiction. That did it for me.
the nicotine patches

and also if those dont work or if they are working but you find yourself craving then think of your family. kids help a lot[if you have anykids that is]

good luck

Whats the best way to quit smoking? -

I-ve stopped today but it-s really getting hard to fight the cravings because of how heavy a smoker I am. Any help here? Cause it-s desperately needed!
Everyones told me cold turkey but as a smoker i feel like ringing their necks. lol. But seriously, I think you should ween yourself down. Like if u smoke 20 a day for the first week only smoke 15 a day then the next week only 10 a day, etc. Hopefully this helps. Good luck
If your a heavy smoker, your body is used to getting lots of nicotine and you are going to have a -Monkey-on-your-back- if you try to go cold turkey.

Best thing you could do is back off until your smoking less or better yet try a combination meditation/Bio-feedback!

Really, it works.

While your convincing yourself, that you don-t need to smoke as many cigarettes, you can practice holding a pen pencil or drinking straw like a smoke, when you feel like you need a smoke and even when you don-t.

Not at the important times , when you need a smoke the worst:
(drinking coke, or coffee, after eating, when you get up)
Then as you get used to pretending, increase the times you don-t smoke or pretend.

You have to believe your smoking and your brain will not know the difference.

Just close your eyes when you draw off the straw or pen, and feel the sensation of your lungs burning and the smell of the smoke when you breath out and see the smoke comijng out of your mouth....Works for me!

After you get the smoking down to one cigarette a day, you can smoke only one every three days..........

After you have completely replaced smoking, you should continue to use the pencil or straw for months!

Good Luck!

PS, Quitting will cause your body to flush the nicotine from your body, so your going to caugh as much as a smoker, for about a month.

Your still have times when you-ll catch yourself patting all your pockets and search for that cigarette, when ever your at that special place, when a cigarette was a great idea, for about a year.

But you-ll feel alot better!
I quit 7 years ago and never touched a cig since. But, I was REALLY ready to quit. I used the patch. I slept with the patch even though they say not to because of the bizare dreams you get. I did have bizare dreams too. But nothing I couldnt deal with and sleeping with the patch made all the difference. I kept a picture of my daughter and a color printed picture of a cancerous lung hung up in my cube at work. On a wall where only I would see it not to offend co-workers. I kept a diary and looking back at the entries in the diary, the patch helped but it-s not a magic wand. I had 3 weeks of -I don-t know if I can do this.-. Then it got easier. The bad days become less and less. I have NO bad days now. For a couple of years, you can expect to have dreams where you find yourself smoking. These will make you mad until you wake up and realize they are dreams. Good luck! You can do it when you are ready. BTW: I could not even make it through a 2 hour movie without leaving the theater to smoke. I was hooked BAD!
I tried everything! Then I read Allen Carr-s Easyway to Stop Smoking. I smoked a pack a day until I read the book, and stopped, just like that, no willpower, no cravings, no regrets and no cigarettes now for 3 years. It was the best thing I ever did. Now I recommend it to every smoker I know. You have nothing to lose by giving it a try. Good luck :)
maybe look for an alternative to smoking tobacco.
Look into electronic cigarettes to get off cigs and then work your way down in nicotine etc.

Does Zoloft help you to quit smoking, and will it effect birth control pills? -

I started taking Zoloft to quit smoking but I don-t think it-s working. Plus I-m on the pill and worried about side effects. What are some easy ways to stop smoking?
Will power. That-s how I did it. It-s all psychological. Each time you pull a cigarette out of the pack, each time you bum one off of someone, each time you buy a pack or even ask for money to buy a pack, ask yourself any one of these questions:

Is this pack/carton/cigarette worth the months/years I-ll spend in the hospital breathing through a tube?

Is this pack/carton/cigarette worth the pain I feel in my lungs and my chest every now and then?

Is this pack/carton/cigarette worth the lives I-ll ruin of my (potential) children, siblings, parents, boyfriend/husband, or other family member when (not if) I die from lung cancer or heart disease?

Is this pack/carton/cigarette worth not being able to perform the physical tasks I once was able to perform before I didn-t smoke?

Is pack/carton/cigarette worth the money that I spent on it, that I am basically burning for no other reason than the momentary gratification that I experience for 5mins (per cigeratte)?

Ask yourself these questions when you even THINK about smoking, and trust me. You-ll quit!

One other tip:

Stop paying for cigarettes at all costs. If you really need one, bum it. But when you start getting dirty looks from people you frequently bum off of, you-ll be ever more encouraged to quit. If you-re doing this, one other question to ask is:

Is this cigarette worth the dirty look I just received from that last ****** I bummed this off of.
girl, if it isn-t working try the gum...i-ve known some it has worked on. Call the dr. and ask him how it will effect you if you stay on zoloft. Smoking isn-t good if your on BC anyway, but i did it. I-m too stressed out to quit. doesn-t that sound awful???
well i am on zoloft and it hasnt helped me quit. the anti depressant that is suppose to help you quit is wellabutrin. never heard of zoloft helping to quit. as for an easy way to quit i have no clue. if you figure it out tell me!

Why is everything taste saltier after a quit smoking? -

I quit smoking after 20 years and now it has been a week and a half and suddenly everything taste saltier...
Can some body give me a clue of what-s going on?
Thank you so much...
I remember my dad saying this too. When you smoke, your taste buds no longer experience the true flavor of things, so you may have found you salted your food.

Now there-s nothing to interefere with the real flavors, so the saltiness (and other tastes) can come through.

Congrats on quitting! I hope you-re 100% successful
It might be because your taste buds are becoming more receptive and returning to how they used to be (and should be).

Well done on giving up!

x
It-s because smoking deadens your taste buds. When you quit smoking they -wake up- again.

What has helped YOU quit smoking? -

I keep trying to quit, but it doesn-t last long. What has helped you?
I used Wellbutrin and bubbles. The Wellbutrin (aka Zyban), being an antidepressant, made me feel better overall, but at night I noticed my heart racing, so I stopped taking it as soon as I felt it was -safe-. I recently read that lots of people are having great results with Chantix (Champix in Canada).

Also, when I needed to do something with my hands, I would blow bubbles. I held the bubble wand between my fingers like a cigarette, took a deep breath, held it a second (just like when smoking), then blew out slowly and watched the bubbles. My cat loved it, and after a few of those -fake drags- I-d feel good and lightheaded and wouldn-t want a cigarette anymore. :)

I quit in March of 2003 and haven-t had a single cigarette since then; however, I often have dreams where I smoke one cig, then suddenly realize I-m up to 2+ packs a day again (at my worst, I was smoking between 2 and 3 packs a day). Then I wake up and feel guilty. Even now, it-s hard to believe I haven-t cheated, but it-s true - I haven-t!

Good luck!
1. Make the decision to really quit smoking.
2. Quit cold-turkey.
3. Realize that everything else is an excuse to keep lighting up.
4. Understand that sofar you have never actually quit,
because quitting implies finality.
5. To achieve this goal, carry a couple of apples on you.
Then, each time you have a nicotine craving, take a bite
out of the apple. It is impossible to chew on the apple
and smoke a cigarette at the same time.
6. When you are not eating an apple, keep a pen or pencil
between the fingers with which you normally hold your
cigarettes.
7. Convince yourself that it is ludicrous to allow a burning pile
of tobacco leaves to take control of your brain.
8. Know that using the -patch- is just an excuse to keep
smoking at a reduced pace.
My Mom quit smoking about 24 years ago. She smoked over a pack a day. She got a real bad scare from the dentist who told her she needed to stop smoking. She used sunflower seeds to quit. Every time she wanted to smoke she would eat them. She ate them QUITE often. My Dad recently got diagnosed with bladder cancer and was told by his doctor that smoking does contribute to bladder cancer. He now has quit, but after 53 years of smoking it is really really hard. The sad fact is that most people are so addicted that they have a hard time quitting unless a doctor scares them into quitting. My husband smokes about 1 1/2 packs per day and I wonder if he will ever quit. He is 37 years old and coughs all the time and does not breathe well. He needs to quit too. I hope that you will realize that if you don-t quit smoking you quite possibly could end up with cancer yourself. I am really sorry to say that. I don-t wish that on anyone. Please quit now and you can start treating your body the way God wants you to, like the Temple. I also have a friend who quit smoking. She didn-t have any medical scares, she just really wanted to quit. Her method seems like it would work. She said she smoked a pack per day. Each day she would smoke only one less. Gradually, she got down to -0- cigarettes. She said she didn-t have any major withdrawals because she kind of weaned herself off of it. I wish you the best of luck in quitting. One thing also that you could try is asking God to take away your cravings. God does answer prayers. God Bless You.

~Kristen M~ That is so awesome! Good for you! That is a neat idea. I will have to pass that along to others!

~Timo~ You are not a freak. I-m sorry that this happened to you. Have you tried taking some speach therapy to help you? It would be worth a try. You mentioned people worse off than you still smoking. There was this one person that had a hole in their throat and had to talk with a little machine. This person would stick the cigarette up to the hole to still smoke. That is so sad.
I had half of my tounge removed from cancer i smoked since i was twelve now I am a freak I cant taste anything and I dont want to tell people why I talk funny,Lucky that stopped me I seen people worse than me still smoking...crazy.
Chantix. If that doesn-t work, try the Commit lozenges -- they-re just a safer way of getting nicotine (no cancer risk) and you can cut down on them gradually if you want.
i have a goal of something expensive i want to buy and each day i do not smoke i put my money i saved on cigs towards what i want to buy. it really adds up quick
stronger cigarettes helped me a lot
